Severed # 3 - Snyder, Tuft & Futaki

With only three issues, I already consider Severed as one of the best miniseries of the year. Intense writing paired with truly beautiful art turn Severed into a must-have. In the first two issues, Jack runs away from home and learns the hard way how dangerous is the big city. He makes an alliance with Sam, a girl that cross-dresses as a boy, so that she can avoid being sexually assaulted.

While Jack plays the violin, Sam asks people for money. And after many dimes and quarters, they have almost enough to leave the city and go after Jack’s father. And that’s the moment in which a mysterious travelling salesman with sharp teeth and a hunger for the innocent shows up... disguised, of course, as a possible manager interested in improving Jack’s musical career.

Sam warns him not to trust in this man, who’s surely a sexual predator. And even though, in chapter two, a degenerate tried to rape the 12-year old boy, he’s adamant in his decision: they’ll both accept the man’s invitation to have dinner together.
the salesman / el viajante

Jack and Sam naively enter into the lion’s den… a creepy and isolated house. The salesman insists on talking about his sexual escapades, his anecdotes with prostitutes, in short, he has but one concept in mind: SEX. Michele Foucault wrote once that Western culture has long been fixated on sexuality. But are we so interested in it because it has been a repressed subject, a taboo? The social convention has created a discourse around it, thereby making sexuality ubiquitous. In the onset of adolescence, Jack is very interested about sex and probably all the boys his age want to discuss about something they don’t quite understand yet: their approach to sexuality is the result of a somewhat puritan education. They’re curious about sex, but at the same time they can’t find any adult willing to talk about it freely.

When the salesman tells dirty jokes about sex, he wins Jack’s trust. This would not have been the case, had sexuality been thought of as something quite natural in our society. In fact, the concept "sexuality" itself is a result of this cultural discourse.

What’s most unique about Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft script is that sex never actually takes place on the page: but is through sex, or rather the salesman’s obsession with sex, that he completely captures Jack’s attention. As a naïve boy, Jack cannot understand what the adult wants, and so when he’s offered a ride to his father’s whereabouts, he accepts it… even rebelling against Sam –whose ‘street smarts’ put her in a state of alert. I asked myself, in the second issue, if Jack would learn from his mistakes. And he doesn’t.
corruptor of minors / corruptor de menores

Finally, I can’t praise enough Attila Futaki’s art. Tenebrous figures, dismal buildings, gloomy faces, it’s all combined with breathtakingly beautiful images. Futaki’s unrestrained coloring and shadowing find the perfect balance in these pages. What an amazing artist!

the house / la casa

sex jokes / bromas sexuales

without the disguise / sin el disfraz
