La muralla - Josep Mª Beà

The 80s sure were a milestone for American comic books, and in the same decade Spain would proudly celebrate the so-called boom of adult comics. Childish publications and imitations of foreign material would disappear, and a proper comic industry of the highest quality would start taking form. However, a decade later, the Spanish crisis left comic companies in bankruptcy. That's why now, 30 years after this golden era, readers have barely heard of great authors like Josep Mª Beà, F de Felipe, Enrique Sánchez Abulí, Carlos Giménez, Alfonso Font, Antonio Segura and many others.

Josep Maria Beà i Font, an author from Barcelona, rose to fame with “Tales from the galactic tavern” (published in “1984”, a science fiction magazine edited by Josep Toutain). However, he always had a preference for surrealism and fantasy (in a Salvador Dali-meets-comics sort of way). “Josep M Beà's peculiar philosophy, the way he  analyzes life, his intellectual and critical sense of humor and his human values, which are reflected in these works, turn this author into one of the most unusual comic creators of the world”. Indeed, these are the elements that are channelized in "The Wall" (serialized in 1983 and published as a trade paperback in 1987), a delicious graphic novel full of metaphors, thoughts and surrealism in its purest form.

Cat, the protagonist of the story is a feline trapped in a huge ship built out of stone that navigates through a nonexistent ocean. Countless individuals of different animal or humanoid species are in the ship. They all experience a slow and agonizing journey in which nothing seems to make sense. In this incredible setting, Cat misses his family and remembers nostalgically his past and the Spanish society, still recovering from Franco's dictatorship.
Cat in a fight / Gato en una pelea

Cat remembers the hypocrite priests from his religious school, sadistic men who would find pleasure instilling fear into the kids hearts, describing hell and making them feel guilty for all the “sins” of the flesh. However, despite this bleak context, there is a prevailing good mood, a sardonic tone, a knowing wink as well as the author's ironic laughter. Challenging, yet honest, Josep Maria Beà reveals how perverted these priests actually were; and at the same time he underlines the cleverness, the slyness and the ingenuity of school students.

While the stone ship continues its voyage, the crewmen begins to lose their calm and their sanity. Cat, at some point, must fight to preserve his life. Of course, there will be all kinds of unexpected problems on board, such as the inexplicable appearance of a beautiful woman, the only one in the vessel, a very horny female that demands from Cat the kind of sexual intercourse that would be inadmissible in any other story: the feline-human carnal union. Finally, Cat and the rest of the crew abruptly land on a strange jungle. Hidden behind the vegetation, Cat will find the mysterious wall that, so far, no one has been able to cross alive.
Cat is easily seduced / Gato es fácilmente seducido
Josep Maria Beà shows here all his talent not only as a writer but also as a penciler and an inker. With fine and delicate lines, the Catalan artist gives his characters -mostly anthropomorphic cats- great expressiveness, while giving free rein to his imagination with insane designs that consolidate the atmosphere of this graphic novel. Finally, Beà is also in charge of lettering and coloring, making an effort with the use of watercolors and hand-painted panels. Undoubtedly, this is a spectacular work that deserves to be read over and over again.

  1. Thanks for the link. I'm sharing it on Facebook. You have quite an impressive blog all around. I've bookmarked it for further visits. I enjoy reminiscing when visiting blogs that have posted about things I know but I also enjoy learning about strips, artists and books I didn't know. Now I want to find La Muralla!

    1. Hi Steven! Thank you so much for your comment!
I hope to see you around as often as possible. I think we're all learning when it comes to comic books, there are always new authors that we can come across or old ones that we can rediscover.
