Punk Rock Jesus # 1 - Sean Murphy

cover / portada

We always have a choice: sometimes we go with the writer; others, with the artist. I know that when I bought the first issue of Joe the Barbarian I did so based entirely on two very compelling reasons: writer Grant Morrison plus Vertigo. I didn’t know who the artist was and I didn’t care. Nonetheless, when I saw the first page I took a deep breath. It wasn’t just a regular comic book page, like the ones I see by the thousands. This was something else, far better than the average output of the “big two”.

As I kept reading I quickly forgot about the other comics I had read in the previous months. It was the art, you see. I found it unique. Sean Murphy’s pages were alive, they were as young as the protagonist of the story -a child- as vibrant and dynamic as the best of Eisner’s works, as unforgettable as classics such as Uderzo and Goscinny or Hergé. In just a few minutes, Sean Murphy had accomplished what usually takes years for other artists: he had turned into one of my favorites.

This time I followed the same reasoning. I saw Vertigo and Sean Murphy in the same sentence and I had no hesitations, I had to preorder Punk Rock Jesus. I had never read anything written by Sean and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. More often than not, I’ve been disappointed by stories written by well established artists. But when I started reading Punk Rock Jesus I immediately felt the intensity of the story and, just like that, I felt transported again. There is something very refreshing and also inspiring in Sean’s newest miniseries.

the calm before the storm... / la calma antes de la tormenta...
fantastic last frame / una última viñeta fantástica

The opening frames, like a brief calm before the storm, are the preamble to a violent and devastating scene. Then, as the narrative unfolds, we understand the kind of world these characters live in. It’s the future, but no an alternative, completely unlikely future, but one that feels awfully close, premonitory even. A world in which corporate greed is even greater than now, and that’s saying a lot. A world in which ignorance and obscurantism still coexist with reason and scientific thoughts (not unlike today’s world). In this future, the “trivialization of culture” has turned Earth into a barren and infertile land, except that nobody realizes it yet. But perhaps that’s why everyone is so keen on the second coming of humankind’s most regarded messiah. Indeed, a corporation has succeeded in cloning Jesus Christ, will this be a sign of salvation or the last omen of doom?

In crisp black and white, Sean shows all his strengths as a penciler and inker. I stayed in awe, admiring every line. There is something magical in the facial expressions of the characters, in their body language, something unexpected and delightful in the way Sean arranges his frames and distributes bodily movement; everything he does is graceful and charming. In my opinion, many pencilers choose the cartoonish approach to conceal their artistic limitations; on the contrary, when Sean does it, he turns every drawing into a masterpiece. Extraordinary.

Excellent composition / una composición excelente

A great combination of light and shadows /

Me pareció único.

Extraordinario.
