July Comic Books / Cómics de julio

I got a dozen of wonderful comics in July. There were a few first issues that I found fascinating: Waid’s Strange Fruit (good story and impressive art), Vaughan’s We Stand On Guard (which deserves its own review) and Gillen’s Mercury Heat (smart sci-fi plus lots of action scenes). Garth Ennis continues to crack me up with his All Star Section 8, it’s just so much fun. And Airboy also made me laugh out loud, amazing mini by James Robinson. It’s safe to say that in July, the best books come from Avatar, in fact, my favorite comic of the month is Moore’s Providence # 2. And now, without further ado, here are July comics as per solicitations.

ALL-STAR SECTION 8 #2 (of 6)

En julio recibí una docena de maravillosos cómics. Hubo varios primeros números que me parecieron fascinantes: “Strange Fruit” de Waid (buena historia e impresionante arte), “We Stand On Guard” de Vaughan (que merece su propia reseña) y “Mercury Heat” de Gillen (ciencia ficción inteligente y mucha acción). Garth Ennis me ha hecho reír a carcajadas con “All Star Section 8” (divertidísimo). Y “Airboy”, la asombrosa miniserie de James Robinson, también me ha hecho reír una y otra vez. Es justo afirmar que en julio, los mejores títulos vienen de Avatar, de hecho, mi cómic favorito del mes es “Providence” # 2 de Moore. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de julio.

April sure was a month devoted mostly to Image Comics. And how could it be otherwise with titles like The Wicked + The Divine (nominated for the Eisner Awards), Velvet (one of Ed Brubaker’s best works with exquisite art by Steve Epting), The Autumlands: Tooth & Claw (winner of the 2014 Arion's Achievement Award for Best New Series) and Kirkman’s Invincible (such an enjoyable title, and much better than The Walking Dead, which I stopped reading a long time ago). However, probably the best issue of the month was Jupiter’s Circle # 1 by Mark Millar (I must write a review about it). And now, without further ado, here are April comics as per solicitations:

Sin duda alguna, abril fue un mes dedicado casi íntegramente a Image Comics. The Courtyard - Alan Moore & Jacen Burrows

Horror as a genre holds a powerful influence over us. That which we would normally find disgusting and terrible in real life, becomes something fascinating in fiction; indeed, we want to connect with our deepest fears. Renowned novelist H.P. Lovecraft explored the darkest corners of the world, and when this plane of existence wasn’t enough, he went even further. Lovecraft’s feverish mind was the origin of the Cthulhu Mythos, an uncanny mythology that has persisted throughout the decades, inspiring a new generation of writers. One of them would be Alan Moore and in The Courtyard (originally published by Avatar Press in January-February 2003) he pays homage to the American master of horror.

Everything begins with Aldo Sax, an FBI agent famous for his ability to think outside the box thus solving the most complicated homicide cases. This time, however, he has encountered an unsolvable mystery: a series of gruesome and seemingly unconnected murders that, nevertheless, have in common some vague and almost insignificant details.

An expert in “anomaly theory”, agent Sax is now in one of the most dangerous and miserable neighborhoods in Brooklyn. And he is about to visit Club Zothique “an amphetamine field of concussive music and light, full of underage heat”. This isn’t a typical teenage hangout, but rather a sinister place connected to the Cthulhu Mythos. Everything there reminds us of H.P. Lovecraft’s books: the band that plays in the club is called The Ulthar Cats, there is an obscene publication titled Pickman’s Necrotica and, at last but not least, the main suspect is Johnny Carcosa (Carcosa is a recurring name in Lovecraft’s tales). 

Nonetheless, Sax ignores all these references and decides to approach Carcosa, a mysterious young man who covers half his face at all times and speaks with a peculiar lisp. Sax tells him that he’s looking for ‘aklo’. Aklo, thinks Sax, must be some sort of hallucinogenic drug, a mind-altering substance. Once again, the federal agent is wrong. Aklo is a fictional language present in Lovecraft’s literary creations.

Club Zothique + Johnny Carcosa

Carcosa promises to give him what he wants in a gloomy courtyard. Sax remembers some disturbing old cases from the early days of the FBI. Back in the 20s, strange and unexplained deaths took place in the Red Hook area, and names like Malone and Suydam (characters in Lovecraft’s books) came up. The Federal Bureau of Investigation concludes that there is a satanic cult behind all this, but that isn’t right. Sax knows that he’s dealing with something far more horrible than Satanism, something arcane and powerful, something that does not belong to our world.

In his introduction, Garth Ennis explains how The Courtyard is “a story bursting with ideas and characters and nice lines and spooky twists, enough to keep most writers occupied for a couple of years – but where just about anyone else would strip-mine a concept like this to the death, what does Alan devote to it? Forty-eight pages, no more”. Indeed, as a generous storyteller, Alan Moore shares with us a terrifying universe, and boils everything down to its very essence. There is not a single superfluous element in Moore’s narrative, every page, every panel, serves a specific purpose.

Certainly, artist Jacen Burrows surprises the readers with lustrous, elegant and clean lines, adding details where necessary or concealing them, and increasing the scope of the nightmarish landscapes we get to see towards the end. Burrows effectively depicts violence and gore, exceling in the designs of the Lovecraftian creatures. “Alan Moore is among the very best writers of the last twenty years […] Jacen Burrows is probably the best artist of the last year. On the basis of the amassed talent alone, The Courtyard is explosive”, affirms Warren Ellis. And I agree with him. I read this haunting one-shot a few years ago, and I was impressed by its ominous and bloodcurdling nature. Rereading it now has been like taking a tour through the ancestral nightmares of humankind.

Un experto en la "teoría de la anomalía", el agente Sax se encuentra en una de las zonas más peligrosas y miserables de Brooklyn. Y está a punto de visitar el Club Zothique "un campo de anfetaminas de música atronadora y luz, lleno de calor juvenil". Este no es el típico lugar de reunión para adolescentes, sino un lugar siniestro conectado a los Mitos de Cthulhu. Todo allí nos recuerda los libros de H.P. Lovecraft: la banda que toca en el club se llama Los gatos de Ulthar, hay una publicación obscena titulada Necrótica de Pickman y, por último pero no menos importante, el principal sospechoso es Johnny Carcosa (Carcosa es un nombre recurrente en los relatos de Lovecraft).

No obstante, Sax ignora todas estas referencias y decide acercarse a Carcosa, un joven misterioso que cubre la mitad de su cara en todo momento y habla con un ceceo peculiar. Sax le dice que él está buscando 'aklo'. Aklo, piensa Sax, debe ser algún tipo de droga alucinógena, una sustancia que altera la mente. Una vez más, el agente federal está equivocado. Aklo es una lengua ficticia presente en las creaciones literarias de Lovecraft.

Carcosa promete darle lo que quiere en un sombrío patio. Sax recuerda algunos casos antiguos e inquietantes de los primeros días del FBI. Allá por los años 20, muertes extrañas e inexplicables tuvieron lugar en la zona de Red Hook, y surgieron nombres como Malone y Suydam (personajes de los libros de Lovecraft). A Lovecraftian nightmare / una pesadilla Lovecraftiana

Ciertamente, el artista Jacen Burrows sorprende a los lectores con trazos lustrosos, elegantes y limpios, añadiendo detalles cuando es necesario o escondiéndolos, para aumentar el impacto de los paisajes de pesadilla que llegamos a ver hacia el final. Burrows representa efectivamente la violencia y el gore, sobresaliendo en los diseños de las criaturas Lovecraftianas. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2015 or 1988, Alan Moore continues to be the best writer of the medium. Miracleman is getting better issue after issue, and Crossed Plus One Hundred # 2 was the best comic of the month. As a general rule I never buy Star Wars comics, but as a general rule I always buy everything John Cassaday does, so I read January’s best selling title (over 800,000 units, breaking every sales record of the past 2 decades) and it sure was a lot of fun. Jupiter’s Legacy, The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw, and The Wicked + The Divine were quite good. And now, without further ado, here are January comics as per solicitations:

December was a pretty good month for comics. Sandman Overture had the best art I’ve seen in months. I can finally binge read Punk Rock Jesus. The next issue of The Unwritten will be the last one and I’m sure it’ll be amazing. Busiek’s The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw fulfills my expectations. And I really enjoyed the beginning of the new arc of The Wicked + The Divine. However, if I had to choose the best comic of the month I wouldn’t have to think twice: Alan Moore’s Crossed Plus One Hundred # 1. Extraordinary! And now, without further ado, here are December comics as per solicitations:

Doll lives in an ivory tower, isolated from the ugliness of the real world. But even a golden cage is still a cage, and so she finally asks permission to abandon (temporarily) Celestine’s headquarters. She leaves behind a world of fashion and glamour, and witnesses how normal people live. 

And it is such an awful life. The less fortunate are undressed by some sort of fashion militia that burns their clothes, others try to find food in a city that has turned into a huge dump. In this trip, Doll is accompanied by Tomboy, who explains to her that people “wear their clothes like flags. All their politics, all the things they expect out of life, all summed up” by the things they wear. It’s true, then, that most of them “will be marching behind these flags for the rest of their lives, whether they know it or not”. 

The ugly reality / la fea realidad

And that makes me think that, certainly, in our world, fashion is closer to tyranny than any other thing. We are also obsessed with certain brands/labels, with certain looks and outfits, and we tend to judge others not because of their political views, their nationality or their intellect, but rather by the way they look, or to be more precise, by how compliant they are of the rules of the fashion industry.  

Facundo Percio, once again, excels in these pages. From Doll’s silent trip through the streets of a city she no longer recognizes, to the activities of the men and women that live there. In the penultimate page, for instance, we can see two gentlemen dressed as noble men from Victorian England that, instead of taking out the dogs, have two women in leashes, dressed in very suggestive bondage-sadomasochism outfits, in other panels we see a man practicing anal sex with a very tall woman, a man throwing up, a man masturbating while he stands next to a woman who can’t stop smoking. In the last page we have a man urinating in front of two women, who eventually kick the crap out of him. All this myriad of details enhances the idea of a world that is strange to us but at the same time mundane enough to be considered real. The wraparound cover also includes many memorable scenes that include street sex and other offenses to the public morale… which makes it all the best.

Doll vive en una torre de marfil, aislada de la fealdad del mundo real. Pero incluso una jaula de oro sigue siendo una jaula, así que finalmente pide permiso para abandonar (temporalmente) los cuarteles generales de Celestine. Ella deja atrás un mundo de glamour y moda, para atisbar cómo vive la gente normal.

Street sex / sexo callejero

Y es una vida tan horrorosa. Los menos afortunados son desvestidos por una especie de milicia de la moda que quema sus ropas, otros intentan encontrar comida en una ciudad que se ha convertido en un gigantesco basurero. En este viaje, Doll es acompañada por Tomboy, quien le explica que la gente "usa sus ropas como banderas. Toda su política, todas las cosas que esperan de la vida, todo se resume" en la forma de vestir. Es cierto, entonces, que muchos de ellos "estarán marchando detrás de estas banderas por el resto de sus vidas, así lo sepan o no".

Y eso me hace pensar que, ciertamente, en nuestro mundo la moda está más cerca de la tiranía que otras cosas. Estamos tan obsesionados con ciertas marcas, con ciertos looks y atuendos, y tendemos a juzgar a otros no por sus opiniones políticas, su nacionalidad o su intelecto, sino más bien por el modo en que se ven o, para ser más preciso, por qué tan obedientes son de las reglas de la industria de la moda.

Facundo Percio, una vez más, se supera en estas páginas. Desde el viaje silencioso de Doll a través de las calles de una ciudad que ya no reconoce, a las actividades de los hombres y mujeres que viven allí. En la penúltima página, por ejemplo, podemos ver a dos caballeros vestidos como nobles de la Inglaterra Victoriana que, en vez de pasear con sus perros, tienen a dos mujeres en correas, vestidas a la usanza bondage-sadomasoquismo, en otras viñetas vemos a un hombre practicando sexo anal con una mujer muy alta, un hombre vomitando, a un hombre masturbándose al lado de una mujer que no deja de fumar. En la última página tenemos a un hombre orinando frente a dos mujeres, que eventualmente le sacan la mugre. Toda esta miríada de detalles enriquece la idea de un mundo que es extraño para nosotros pero al mismo tiempo lo suficientemente mundano para ser considerado real. La portada doble también incluye muchas escenas memorables que incluyen sexo callejero y otras ofensas a la moral pública... De lo mejor.

A great composer recognizes the value of silence. A great filmmaker knows the importance of a pause. In the same way, a great writer knows how to communicate something without dialogues: sometimes an image is more eloquent than any well prepared speech. The first pages of this issue are completely silent. There is not a word of dialogue, there is not a single onomatopoeia. A muted Doll wanders around the streets. 


In a carriage pushed by men instead of horses, she sees her publicity panels being covered by an ad that reads “It’s conscription”. Many men are being conscripted. There is a war approaching. And the threat of a nuclear holocaust. But, as usual, everything that matters to the public is the fashion industry, the runways, the new outfits. 

When Doll visits Celestine’s quarters, she undresses so that she can wear the new invention of the master of fashion. Celestine explains passionately the origin of this new black dress, the material, the characteristics of the design. In the end, he apologizes: “There is nothing so wearying as another’s enthusiasm”, and he is right and wrong at the same time. Surely, if we do not share our interlocutor’s enthusiasm then we must agree with this phrase, but sometimes two people can be fascinated by the same subject. 

But the question remains. Can Doll truly communicate with her master? Is fashion all that matters in the world? For Tomboy this is a world of empty glamour: “This whole morbid, claustrophobic denial of bodies, denial of sex” is what Doll wants, or isn’t it?

Facundo Percio has some extraordinary pages here, especially the initial mute scenes, that carry so much meaning with a visual rhythm of its own. The moment in which we see Doll naked is quite suggestive, showing a body with androgynous characteristics.

Silent sequence / secuencia silenciosa

Un buen compositor reconoce el valor del silencio. Un gran cineasta sabe la importancia de una pausa. Del mismo modo, un gran escritor sabe cómo comunicar algo sin diálogos: a veces una imagen es más elocuente que cualquier discurso bien preparado. Las primeras páginas de este número están en completo silencio. No hay palabras, no hay ni siquiera una onomatopeya. Una enmudecida Doll vaga por las calles.

En un carruaje jalado por hombres en vez de caballos, ella ve cómo sus paneles de publicidad son tapados por un aviso en el que se lee "Es la conscripción". Hay muchos hombres conscriptos. Hay una guerra que se aproxima. Y la amenaza de un holocausto nuclear. Pero, como siempre, lo único que le importa al público es la industria de la moda, las pasarelas, los nuevos trajes.

Cuando Doll visita los cuarteles de Celestine, se desviste para poder usar la nueva invención del amo de la moda. Celestine explica con pasión el origen de este nuevo vestido negro, el material, las características del diseño. Al final, se disculpa: "No hay nada más extenuante que el entusiasmo de otro", y acierta y se equivoca al mismo tiempo. Seguramente, si no compartimos el entusiasmo de nuestro interlocutor entonces estaremos de acuerdo con esta frase, pero a veces dos personas pueden estar fascinadas por un mismo tema.

Sin embargo, la pregunta sigue allí. ¿Puede Doll comunicarse de verdad con su amo? ¿Es la moda lo único que importa en el mundo? Para Tomboy este es un mundo de glamour hueco: ¿"Esta negación del sexo, esta negación mórbida y claustrofóbica de los cuerpos" es lo que quiere Doll?

Facundo Percio logra páginas extraordinarias, en especial las escenas iniciales que son mudas, que poseen mucho significado y un ritmo visual propio. El momento en el que vemos a Doll desnuda es también sugerente: se muestra un cuerpo con rasgos andróginos.
