June Comics / cómics de junio

Unlike previous months, in June I only got a few comics. Doctor Strange and Cinema Purgatorio were quite good. I bought Rebirth # 1 because it was a giant-sized issue with a very low price (which I always appreciate), and some of my favorite artists were in it; I have to admit it was surprisingly satisfactory. However, the best issue of the month was Alan Moore’s Providence # 9. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations:

A diferencia de meses anteriores, en junio hubo poquitos cómics. "Doctor Strange" y "Cinema Purgatorio" me gustaron bastante. Compré "Rebirth" porque era un especial extra grande a un precio bajo (algo que siempre valoro), y algunos de mis artistas favoritos estaban allí; debo admitir que fue sorprendentemente satisfactorio. Sin embargo, el mejor cómic del mes fue "Providence" de Alan Moore. Así que sin más preámbulos los dejo con los cómics de junio:

CINEMA PURGATORIO #2

March Comics / cómics de marzo

Unlike other months, there were only a few comics in March, but they were good ones. Doctor Strange continues to surprise me; I’ve also been enjoying Paper Girls a lot more than I thought I would. I would consider The Young Protectors as the best comic of the month, but it wasn’t originally published in 2016, so to follow my own rules, I’d say International Iron Man # 1 wins this time. And now without further ado here are March comics as per solicitations:

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #6
(W) Mark Waid (A) Mahmud A. Asrar (CA) Alex Ross. The villain pulling the Avengers' strings stands revealed - someone who's been a part of Avengers history for almost all of the team's existence, in a way you've never seen them before! The All-New, All-Different Avengers' first story arc ends here - and you won't guess who's left standing on the last page. Rated T+

DISCIPLINE #1 
(W) Peter Milligan (A/CA) Leandro Fernandez. Between fighting her sister and hating her husband, Melissa still finds time to fall in lust with a stranger who's an awful lot more than he seems. A diferencia de otros meses, sólo hubo unos cuantos cómics en marzo, pero valieron la pena. “Doctor Strange” continúa sorprendiéndome; también he estado disfrutando “Paper Girls” mucho más de lo que hubiese imaginado. Considero que el mejor cómic del mes es “The Young Protectors” pero no fue publicado originalmente en el 2016, así que para seguir mis propias reglas, diría que “International Iron Man” gana esta vez. Luego de pelear con su hermana y odiar a su marido, Melissa aun encuentra tiempo para caer en la lujuria con un desconocido que es muchísimo más de lo que parece ser. July Comic Books / Cómics de julio

I got a dozen of wonderful comics in July. There were a few first issues that I found fascinating: Waid’s Strange Fruit (good story and impressive art), Vaughan’s We Stand On Guard (which deserves its own review) and Gillen’s Mercury Heat (smart sci-fi plus lots of action scenes). Garth Ennis continues to crack me up with his All Star Section 8, it’s just so much fun. And Airboy also made me laugh out loud, amazing mini by James Robinson. It’s safe to say that in July, the best books come from Avatar, in fact, my favorite comic of the month is Moore’s Providence # 2. And now, without further ado, here are July comics as per solicitations.

En julio recibí una docena de maravillosos cómics. Hubo varios primeros números que me parecieron fascinantes: “Strange Fruit” de Waid (buena historia e impresionante arte), “We Stand On Guard” de Vaughan (que merece su propia reseña) y “Mercury Heat” de Gillen (ciencia ficción inteligente y mucha acción). Garth Ennis me ha hecho reír a carcajadas con “All Star Section 8” (divertidísimo). Y “Airboy”, la asombrosa miniserie de James Robinson, también me ha hecho reír una y otra vez. Es justo afirmar que en julio, los mejores títulos vienen de Avatar, de hecho, mi cómic favorito del mes es “Providence” # 2 de Moore. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de julio.

June comic books / cómics de junio

There were only 9 comics for me this month. But the good thing is that most of them were absolutely great. Garth Ennis and his All Star Section 8 is the funniest comic I’ve read in 2015, I literally couldn’t stop laughing when I was reading it. On a similar vein, Airboy was also hilarious, and much better than what was expected. And my favorite comic of the month is Crossed Plus Hundred # 5. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations. 

AIRBOY #1 (of 4) (MR) 
Worlds and minds explode in a brand-new series! When acclaimed comics author JAMES ROBINSON (Starman, Fantastic Four) is hired to write a reboot of the 1940s action hero Airboy, he's reluctant to do yet another Golden Age reboot. Garth Ennis y su All Star Section 8 es el cómic más divertido que he leído en el 2015, literalmente no pude dejar de reírme mientras lo leía. February comic books / cómics de febrero

“All good things must come to an end”, and in February, after 6 outstanding years, “The Unwritten” comes to an end. I’m glad to say I was there at the beginning, in July 2009, when I bought the first issue. I’ve been a fan of Carey’s series ever since. The last issue of “The Unwritten” is my favorite comic of the month. I also read the conclusion of “MPH”, Millar’s miniseries (and I’ll review it on April). The final chapter of Olympus in Moore’s “Miracleman” was absolutely brilliant. But of course after so many endings there are also new beginnings, in fact, the first issue of Morrison’s “Nameless” was surprisingly good. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations:

It doesn’t matter if it’s 2015 or 1988, Alan Moore continues to be the best writer of the medium. Miracleman is getting better issue after issue, and Crossed Plus One Hundred # 2 was the best comic of the month. As a general rule I never buy Star Wars comics, but as a general rule I always buy everything John Cassaday does, so I read January’s best selling title (over 800,000 units, breaking every sales record of the past 2 decades) and it sure was a lot of fun. Jupiter’s Legacy, The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw, and The Wicked + The Divine were quite good. And now, without further ado, here are January comics as per solicitations:

This concept has been the starting point of many tales, for instance, Pixar’s film “The Incredibles”; and, certainly, we could never forget Alan Moore’s take on a group of retired superheroes in “Watchmen”.

Faithful to this tradition, Mark Millar introduces Duke McQueen, a middle-aged man that all of a sudden finds reality too unbearable: his wife, the woman that gave meaning to his life for over 3 decades, has died. And now all that remains are the memories, the dusty trophies and the certainty that youth is, indeed, ephemeral.

Everything begins with the funeral. Duke remembers his wife and the things he loved about her, and he also remembers his interstellar quests, his daring exploits in Tantalus, a planet thousands of light years away from our solar system. But the thing is nobody else shares those memories. The wonderful secrets and the intimate complicity between him and his wife belonged only to them, and no one else. And most people consider his space adventures as either mere delusions or harmless fantasies.

Duke’s children are as egocentric as only real people can be. Selfish to the core, they could be seen as cruel men, but at the same time, they’re so self-absorbed that inevitably we identify with them. Because everyone is selfish to some degree, and nobody is as altruistic and kind as Duke and his wife were. And that’s the beauty of Millar’s script, turning the characteristics of a pulp hero of the 30s –like Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and so many others– into the essence of a normal man, living an anodyne existence and yet, somehow, surviving the loss of the woman he loved.

In this scenario of dullness and tedious routine, an unexpected arrival surprises Duke. Krish Moor, a young boy no older than 12, lands a spaceship on his backyard and asks him for help. After decades of peace and prosperity, Tantalus is once again under siege.

The witty retorts, the humorous verbal exchanges between Duke and Krish are absolutely refreshing, and they also provide ample opportunities to contrast the optimistic energy and youthful vigor of the boy and the fatigued and yet hopeful countenance of Duke; revitalized by the kid’s presence, Duke decides to relive his reckless past and tries to be, once again, Tantalus savior.  

When Millar refers to the old and traditional comic strips of Flash Gordon he also finds the way to reanalyze and re-elaborate the mythemes contained therein. Because if Flash Gordon is the quintessential European conqueror –disguised as a savior– in a strange and savage land (ruled, in fact, by Emperor Ming, a man of oriental features that coincide with the ‘yellow terror’ of the 30s and 40s), Duke McQueen is quite the opposite. Duke is the man who has learned the lesson, who has understood that he didn’t go to Tantalus just to give them freedom, he simply went there to have the adventures of a lifetime.

The fact that Tantalus continues to be under the oppression of a new tyrant, cruel and vengeful like no other before him, is an expression of the concept of the “Noble Savage” as explained by Rousseau. People from Tantalus are essentially naïve, sincere and peaceful, they’re the ideal victims of the conqueror, whoever he may be. It’s interesting, then, to observe how Duke decides once again to assume the role of the hero, and the reason why he does it is because for the first time in years he has stopped feeling useless, timeworn and insignificant. 

The final chapter of Starlight is an upbeat and optimistic song about hope for a better tomorrow. Even an old man like Duke McQueen can still inspire people. And although he could stay in Tantalus and be treated as a king, he decides to return to Earth, to his sons. Because even if they’re adults and don’t need him anymore, he still wants to be there. Just in case. Because, as a father, he still cares and worries about them.

Goran Parlov’s style is reminiscent of European masters like Moebius; his sleek designs, his aestheticism and his loose and yet expressive lines are a testament to his talent. He may not be as refined as Moebius, but he does manage to create some truly gorgeous pages. Millar and Parlov, working in unison, turn Starlight into one of the best miniseries of 2014.

A new tyrant has arrived / un nuevo tirano ha llegado

Vives en el presente. Eso es innegable. Pero el día de hoy, como bien sabes, no durará para siempre. Entonces ¿qué pasa cuando el futuro te alcanza, cuando has envejecido y estás solo, y lo único que te queda son las memorias de un pasado glorioso? Este concepto ha sido el punto de inicio de muchos relatos, por ejemplo el film de Pixar “The Incredibles”; y, ciertamente, nunca podríamos olvidar la propuesta de Alan Moore sobre un grupo de superhéroes jubilados en “Watchmen”. 

Fiel a esta tradición, Mark Millar nos presenta a Duke McQueen, un hombre cincuentón que repentinamente se da cuenta que la realidad se le hace insoportable: su esposa, la mujer que le dio significado a su vida por más de 3 décadas, ha muerto. Y ahora todo lo que queda son los recuerdos, los trofeos polvorientos y la certeza de que la juventud es, de hecho, efímera.

Todo empieza con el funeral. Duke recuerda a su esposa y lo mucho que la quería, y también recuerda sus viajes interestelares, sus audaces aventuras en Tantalus, un planeta a miles de años luz de nuestro sistema solar. Pero el asunto es que nadie más comparte esas memorias. Los maravillosos secretos y la complicidad íntima entre él y su esposa les pertenecía solamente a ellos, y a nadie más. Egoístas hasta la médula, podrían ser vistos como sujetos crueles, pero al mismo tiempo, están tan absorbidos en sí mismos que inevitablemente nos identificamos con ellos. Porque todos somos egoístas hasta cierto punto, y nadie es tan altruista y amable como lo eran Duke y su esposa. Y eso es lo bello del guión de Millar, convertir las características de un héroe pulp de los 30s –como Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers y tantos otros– en la esencia de un hombre normal, que vive una existencia anodina y, no obstante, de algún modo, sobrevive la pérdida de la mujer que amaba. 

En este escenario de rutina y tedio, una llegada inesperada sorprende a Duke. Krish Moor, un chaval de no más de 12 años, aterriza una nave espacial en el patio de Duke y le pide ayuda. Después de décadas de paz y prosperidad, Tantalus está una vez más bajo asedio.

Las frases ingeniosas, el humorístico intercambio verbal entre Duke y Krish son absolutamente refrescantes, y también proporcionan más de una oportunidad para contrastar la energía optimista y el vigor juvenil del muchacho con la fatigada aunque todavía ilusionada expresión de Duke; revitalizado por la presencia del chiquillo, Duke decide revivir su impulsivo pasado e intenta ser, nuevamente, el salvador de Tantalus.

Cuando Millar hace referencia a las viejas y tradicionales tiras cómicas de Flash Gordon también encuentra la manera de reanalizar y reelaborar los mitemas allí contenidos. Porque si Flash Gordon es la quintaesencia del conquistador europeo –disfrazado de salvador– en una tierra  extraña y salvaje (gobernada, de hecho, por el Emperador Ming, un hombre de rasgos orientales que coincide así con el ‘terror amarillo’ de los 30s y 40s), Duke McQueen es todo lo contrario. Duke es el hombre que ha aprendido la lección, que ha entendido que él no fue a Tantalus sólo para conceder la libertad, simplemente fue allí para tener la más grande aventura de su vida.

El hecho que Tantalus continúa bajo la opresión de un nuevo tirano, cruel y vengativo como ningún otro, es una expresión del concepto del “buen salvaje” de Rousseau. La gente de Tantalus es esencialmente ingenua, sincera y pacífica, ellos son las victimas ideales del conquistador, quienquiera que sea. Es interesante, entonces, observar cómo Duke decide asumir otra vez el rol del héroe, y lo hace por una razón: por primera vez en años ha dejado de sentirse inútil, deteriorado e insignificante. 

El capítulo final de Starlight es un canto optimista y luminoso sobre la esperanza de un mejor mañana. Incluso un viejo como Duke McQueen todavía puede inspirar a la gente. Y aunque podría quedarse en Tantalus y ser tratado como un rey, decide regresar a la Tierra, a sus hijos. Porque incluso si es que ellos son adultos y ya no lo necesitan, él de todos modos quiere estar ahí. Por si acaso. Porque, como padre, todavía se preocupa por ellos y los quiere.

El estilo de Goran Parlov es reminiscente al de maestros europeos como Moebius; sus diseños elegantes, su esteticismo y sus líneas sueltas pero expresivas son una prueba de su talento. Quizá no sea tan refinado como Moebius, pero se las arregla para crear algunas páginas realmente hermosas. Millar y Parlov, trabajando al unísono, hacen de Starlight una de las mejores miniseries del 2014.
