March comics / cómics de marzo

In March I had the opportunity to get my hands on some classic material like New Mutants and James Robinson’s The Golden Age. I also enjoyed reading Silver Surfer, Jessica Jones, Doctor Strange and Infamous Iron Man, and most especially Cinema Purgatorio (Alan Moore and Garth Ennis continue to deliver amazing stories). And I have to say that the first issue of American Gods was very good. However, my favorite issue of the month was Astro City #41, a touching story with a unique take on the superhero genre that only an author like Kurt Busiek could’ve created. And now without further ado here are March comics as per solicitations:

AMERICAN GODS: SHADOWS #1
(W) Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell (A) P. Craig Russell (CA) Glenn Fabry. NEIL GAIMAN! P. CRAIG RUSSELL! SCOTT HAMPTON! Shadow Moon just got out of jail, only to discover his wife is dead. Defeated, broke, and uncertain as to where to go from here, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, who employs him to serve as his bodyguard - thrusting Shadow into a deadly world of the supernatural, where ghosts of the past come back from the dead, and a brewing war between old and new gods hits a boiling point. The Hugo, Bram Stoker, Locus, World Fantasy, and Nebula award-winning novel and upcoming Starz television series by Neil Gaiman is adapted as a comic series for the first time!

ASTRO CITY #41
(W) Kurt Busiek (A) Brent Eric Anderson (CA) Alex Ross
Who really is the Astro-Naut?

CINEMA PURGATORIO #8
A deep seeded dread spreads over you as you sit in the otherworldly movie theatre. The smell of burnt popcorn is tinged with something else, something coppery… blood? As the first film starts to dance across the screen you hear a strangled choke from behind you. What have you gotten yourself into? This is the theatre of the surreal from the imagination of the one and only Alan Moore! Prepare yourself for twisted tales from the masters of the art form. Now showing: Cinema Purgatorio by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill, A More Perfect Union by Max Brooks and Michael DiPascale, Code Pru by Garth Ennis and Raulo Caceres, Modded by Kieron Gillen and Ignacio Calero, and The Vast by Christos Gage and Gabriel Andrade. Each story has its own cover by the series artist and there is also an Ancient Tome Premium edition limited to 1000 copies.

DOCTOR STRANGE #18
(W) Jason Aaron (A) Frazer Irving (CA) Kevin Nowlan. Mister Misery is looking to inflict maximum pain on Doctor Strange by attacking one the Sorcerer Supreme's closest allies. But Strange won't stand for it and gets help from THOR!

INFAMOUS IRON MAN #5
(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A/CA) Alex Maleev. • What is Doom's secret? Why, after all he has done to destroy and punish us, is he now determined to become the hero? • Find the answer here. But can you trust anything he says or does? • Plus: The identity of his new cosmic-level adversary is revealed! And it's a doozy. Rated T+

JESSICA JONES #6
(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A) Michael Gaydos (CA) David Mack. With the reveal of how and why Jessica's life has been destroyed, with the reveal of who the new bad guy is in Jessica's life, can Jessica put the pieces back together or is it just too late? Guest-starring Captain Marvel.

JSA: THE GOLDEN AGE DELUXE EDITION HC
(W) James Robinson (A/CA) Paul Smith. Set at the start of one of the darkest periods of U.S. history, the infamous 'McCarthy Era,' JSA: THE GOLDEN AGE takes a thought-provoking look at what might have happened to DC's first generation of super heroes beyond their exploits during the Second World War, as paranoia pervades America. DC's first generation of super heroes have been driven into retirement or hiding, or madness-except for a few who are willing to change with the times. But behind the scenes, something even more sinister is unfolding-a subtle plot that may engulf the planet and remake it in one man's image. Collects THE GOLDEN AGE #1-4 in a Deluxe hardcover for the first time.

MR. PUNCH 20TH ANNIVERSARY TP
(W) Neil Gaiman (A/CA) Dave McKean. The classic graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean is back in a new hardcover edition with bonus sketch material! MR. PUNCH tells the tale of a young boy's loss of innocence due to a horrific confrontation with his past. Spending a summer at his grandfather's seaside arcade, a troubled adolescent becomes involved with a mysterious Punch and Judy man and a mermaid-portraying woman. But when the violent puppet show triggers buried memories of the boy's past, the lives of all become feverishly intertwined. With disturbing mysteries and half-truths uncontrollably unraveling, the young boy is forced to deal with his family's dark secrets of violence, betrayal, and guilt.

The New Mutants' on-the-job training begins in earnest with battles against Sentinels, the Silver Samurai, Viper and the Hellfire Club; a team-up with Spidey and Cloak and Dagger - and the team gets a taste of life as X-Men in a disturbing encounter with the Brood! Volume #1 in the New Mutants Epic Collections Rated T

SILVER SURFER #9
(W) Dan Slott (A/CA) Mike Allred. 'Worlds Apart' STARTS NOW! The world of Inkandesha is hauntingly beautiful, filled with cities of solid light and populated by living holographic people. But there's one tiny thing the people of this world probably should've told the Silver Surfer and Dawn before they decided to pop in for a visit...they might have a problem getting their physical bodies back. Rated T+

En marzo tuve la oportunidad de revisar material clásico como los New Mutants y The Golden Age de James Robinson. También disfruté leyendo Silver Surfer, Jessica Jones, Doctor Strange e Infamous Iron Man, y especialmente Cinema Purgatorio (Alan Moore y Garth Ennis continúan produciendo historias asombrosas).

INFAMOUS IRON MAN #5

JSA: THE GOLDEN AGE DELUXE EDITION HC

NEW MUTANTS EPIC COLLECTION: RENEWAL TPB

February may be the shortest month, but certainly there was no shortage of comics supply! It was great to finally receive Byrne’s Alpha Flight Omnibus as well as Alan Moore’s Another Suburban Romance. There are some quite good Marvel monthly series but once again I was surprised by the quality of Invincible. My favorite comic of the month is Jason Aaron’s Unworthy Thor #4. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations:

ALPHA FLIGHT BY JOHN BYRNE OMNIBUS HC
(W/A) Various (CA) John Byrne. Legendary writer/artist John Byrne steers one of his greatest creations to glory! But they'll face their darkest defeat at the hands of rival Omega Flight. And when an Alphan falls, can the team fight on? Plus: Loki! The Hulk! And more! Collecting X-MEN (1963) #109, #120-121 and #139-140; MACHINE MAN (1978) #18; MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE (1974) #83-84; INCREDIBLE HULK (1968) #272, #313 and ANNUAL #8; ALPHA FLIGHT (1983) #1-29; X-MEN AND ALPHA FLIGHT (1985) #1-2; X-MEN/ALPHA FLIGHT (1998) #1-2; and material from MARVEL TEAM-UP ANNUAL #7. ANOTHER SUBURBAN ROMANCE

Alan Moore's performance works making up the play Another Suburban Romance are translated into print and lavishly illustrated as full sequential stories. Comprised of three major pieces, adapted from Moore's original presentations by frequent collaborator Antony (Fashion Beast) Johnston, this original graphic novel is completely illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp. Running from the 1920's Chicago style killings in Old Gangsters Never Die, to the ruminations on modern life in the namesake piece Another Suburban Romance, this powerful work is an essential piece of the Alan Moore graphic novel library that no fan will want to miss!

CHAMPIONS #5
(W) Mark Waid (A/CA) Humberto Ramos. Oh, great! Just when the Champions had a nice little movement going on, here comes Gwenpool to ruin - I mean, 'improve' - it all, with her patented brand of consequence-less violence and disregard for human life! Rated T+

DOCTOR STRANGE #16
(W) Jason Aaron (A) Chris Bachalo (CA) Kevin Nowlan. 'Blood in the Aether' reaches its jaw-dropping conclusion. Doctor Strange has run the gamut of his most powerful villains, and waiting at the end? The scariest of all… The dread Dormammu is back and bringing the hurt to his archenemy! Rated T+

DOCTOR STRANGE #17
(W) Jason Aaron (A) Chris Bachalo (CA) Kevin Nowlan. • In the epic 'Last Days of Magic,' MR. MISERY helped Doctor Strange defeat the Empirikul. • But don't misunderstand, Misery is no hero, and he aims to show Strange the meaning of his name. Rated T+

INFAMOUS IRON MAN #4
(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A/CA) Alex Maleev. It seems like old times as Victor Von Doom finds himself confronted by Benjamin J. Grimm. But with so much history between them, can Victor ever possibly convince him that times have changed? That Victor Von Doom is now REALLY Iron Man? Rated T+

(W) Robert Kirkman (A/CA) Ryan Ottley, Nathan Fairbairn. NEW STORY ARC! 'THE END OF ALL THINGS': Part One-RYAN OTTLEY returns as 'THE END OF ALL THINGS' begins.

ALPHA FLIGHT BY JOHN BYRNE OMNIBUS HC
Recopila X-MEN (1963) # 109, # 120-121 y # 139-140; MACHINE MAN (1978) # 18; MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE (1974) # 83 - 84; INCREDIBLE HULK (1968) # 272, # 313 y ANNUAL # 8; ALFA VUELO (1983) # 1-29; X-MEN Y ALFA VUELO (1985) # 1-2; X-MEN / ALPHA FLIGHT (1998) # 1 - 2; Y material de MARVEL TEAM-UP ANNUAL # 7.

ANOTHER SUBURBAN ROMANCE

INFAMOUS IRON MAN #4

TRUE BELIEVERS: WOLVERINE VS. HULK #1

TRUE BELIEVERS: WOLVERINE #1

TRUE BELIEVERS: WOLVERINE – SAVE THE TIGER #1

UNWORTHY THOR #4

Unlike other months, there were only a few comics in March, but they were good ones. Doctor Strange continues to surprise me; I’ve also been enjoying Paper Girls a lot more than I thought I would. I would consider The Young Protectors as the best comic of the month, but it wasn’t originally published in 2016, so to follow my own rules, I’d say International Iron Man # 1 wins this time. And now without further ado here are March comics as per solicitations:

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #6
(W) Mark Waid (A) Mahmud A. Asrar (CA) Alex Ross. The villain pulling the Avengers' strings stands revealed - someone who's been a part of Avengers history for almost all of the team's existence, in a way you've never seen them before! The All-New, All-Different Avengers' first story arc ends here - and you won't guess who's left standing on the last page. Rated T+

DISCIPLINE #1
(W) Peter Milligan (A/CA) Leandro Fernandez. Between fighting her sister and hating her husband, Melissa still finds time to fall in lust with a stranger who's an awful lot more than he seems. What appears to be a simple seduction is revealed as something much darker and more dangerous. This controversial and erotically-charged tale of sex, death, and metamorphosis begins with an explosion of carnality and weirdness.

DOCTOR STRANGE #6
(W) Jason Aaron (A) Chris Bachalo (CA) Kevin Nowlan. 'THE LAST DAYS OF MAGIC' STARTS NOW! The Emperikul have arrived, leaving universes purged of magic in their wake. Their next target? The Marvel Universe. And with Doctor Strange weakened beyond measure? We don't have a chance! Rated T+

HUCK #5
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Rafael Albuquerque. An old grudge leads to deadly threats against Huck and those he holds dear.
my drawing (color version) / mi dibujo (versión a color)

INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN #1
(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A/CA) Alex Maleev. Who is Tony Stark, really? Since learning that he was adopted as a baby, this question has cast a shadow over Stark's life. Now, it is time to uncover what his legacy truly is, a journey that will carry Tony into new directions as a man and as a super hero. Alongside his strange new quasi-ally Doctor Doom, Iron Man will discover new things about the Marvel Universe he didn't know existed before! A character deconstruction from Bendis and Maleev along the lines of their award-winning DAREDEVIL run! Rated T+

JUPITER'S CIRCLE, VOL. 2 #4 (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A) Chris Sprouse (CA) Frank Quitely. A new villain ups the ante with a threat that unites former enemies-and creates new ones.

PAPER GIRLS #2
(W) Brian K. Vaughan (A/CA) Cliff Chang. The hottest new ongoing series of the year continues, as the Paper Girls witness the impossible.

PAPER GIRLS #4
(W) Brian K. Vaughan (A/CA) Cliff Chang. What lurks beneath the streets of Stony Stream?

THE YOUNG PROTECTORS
The Young Protectors Volume 1: Engaging the Enemy is a multi-chapter superhero comic created by writer Alex Woolfson, penciler Adam DeKraker and colorist Veronica Gandini.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #6

INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN #1

THE YOUNG PROTECTORS
The Young Protectors Volumen 1: Engaging the Enemy. (W) Alex Woolfson, (A/CA) Adam DeKraker, (C) Veronica Gandini.

February comics / cómics de febrero

February was such a good month for comics. I’m amazed by the high quality of Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer, which are quickly turning into my most eagerly-awaited monthly series. Millar is still firing on all cylinders with Huck and especially the second volume of Jupiter’s Circle. And Image has a couple of promising new series: Snowfall and Cry Havoc. However, once again my favorite comic of the month, and by quite a large margin, is Alan Moore’s Providence # 7. Can’t wait to start reviewing this series. And now without further ado here are February comics as per solicitations:

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #4
(W) Mark Waid (A) Adam Kubert (CA) Alex Ross. You thought the origin of the All-New, All-Different Avengers was surprising? You haven't seen anything yet! When passions flare between Captain America and Thor, they lead to Earth's Mightiest Kiss! Rated T+

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #5
(W) Mark Waid (A) Mahmud A. Asrar (CA) Alex Ross. The villain pulling the Avengers' strings stands revealed - someone who's been a part of Avengers history for almost all of the team's existence, in a way you've never seen them before! The All-New, All-Different Avengers' first story arc ends here - and you won't guess who's left standing on the last page. Rated T+

BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT SAGA HC
Frank Miller (W/A/CA). THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS #1-4 and THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN #1-3.

CRY HAVOC #1 (MR)
(W) Simon Spurrier (A) Ryan Kelly (CA) Cameron Stewart. BEHOLD THE MODERN MONSTROSITY. X-Men Legacy writer SIMON SPURRIER and superstar artist RYAN KELLY present fiends, fragility, and firepower in an all-new series, mixing the hard-boiled militaria of Jarhead with the dark folklore of Pan's Labyrinth. Includes an unprecedented use of multiple colorists (MATT WILSON, LEE LOUGHRIDGE, & NICK FILARDI) to define the story's threads, and an incredible variant cover by Eisner Award winner CAMERON STEWART. This is not the tale of a lesbian werewolf who goes to war. Except it kind of is.

DOCTOR STRANGE #5
(W) Jason Aaron (A) Kevin Nowlan (CA) Chris Bachalo. The Witchfinder Wolves are here and Doctor Strange is in trouble. The Empirikul is coming, Magic's days are numbered and Strange is not ready! Rated T+

DOOM PATROL TP BOOK 1 (MR)
(W) Grant Morrison (A) Richard Case, John Nyberg (CA) Brian Bolland. In these tales from DOOM PATROL #19-34, the world's strangest heroes have left behind almost every vestige of normality. Shunned as freaks and outcasts, the Doom Patrol faces mystifying threats that must be defeated-at any cost. These are the epics that introduced Rebis, Crazy Jane, Dorothy Spinner, the Brotherhood of Dada and more!

HUCK #4
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Rafael Albuquerque. New revelations about Huck's origins come to light!

JUPITER'S CIRCLE, VOL. 2 #3 (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A) Chris Sprouse (CA) Frank Quitely. Skyfox was once a member of America's greatest super team. Now he's kidnapped the Vice President in a bid to stop the Vietnam War.

PROVIDENCE #7
(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Jacen Burrows. Robert Black came looking for a story but what he found is a world of misery and woe. He's become a broken man only beginning to accept the horrors of the Lovecraftian world are real and hiding in plain sight. Alan Moore and artist Jacen Burrows have delivered a slow burn tale of fear and underlying dread that has delighted fans and scholars alike. Moore has written every cover detail, every single page, and every nuance of this work to create his most fully-realized vision to date. Fans of Moore's immersive style and meticulous grasp of storytelling will be thrilled to add this essential piece of comics history to their collections! Available with Regular, Pantheon, Portrait, Dreamscape Wraparound, Women of HPL, and a special Ancient Tome Incentive cover, all by collaborator Jacen Burrows.

SILVER SURFER #2
(W) Dan Slott (A/CA) Mike Allred.  Why is Silver Surfer fighting the ever-loving blue-eyed THING? Who is this Alicia Masters person, and why hasn't Norrin told Dawn about her before? Where did that alien armada come from? What can they really do to planet Earth that is WORSE THAN DEATH?! • And WHEN, exactly, IS Clobbering Time?! Right now, True Believer! RIGHT NOW! Rated T+

SNOWFALL #1
(W) Joe Harris (A/CA) Martin Morazzo. Writer JOE HARRIS (The X-Files) and artist MARTÍN MORAZZO (Vertigo Quarterly), creators of GREAT PACIFIC, reunite for a brand new ongoing science-fiction series and an OVERSIZED DEBUT ISSUE featuring thirty-two pages of story! In the year 2045 it no longer snows. A catastrophic crash has left the climate ravaged, society splintered, and the newly-christened 'Cooperative States of America' propped up and administered by the powerful Hazeltyne Corporation. Only one man wages an all-out weather war against the system, wielding the forces of nature themselves as weapons. He is the White Wizard. The ghost in the night. Genius. Terrorist. Outlaw. Hero?

________________________________________________________________________________________________

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #4
Entonces aún no habéis visto nada.

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #5

BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT SAGA HC
THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS #1-4 y THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN #1-3.

CRY HAVOC #1 (MR)

my drawing / mi dibujo
HUCK #4

Genio. Terrorista. Proscrito. ¿Héroe?
