In June I was busy with my trip to Peru so instead of watching movies I spent time with my family and ate delicious food in many restaurants. All in all, I still had time to see two new movies: Zack Snyder directs Army of the Dead (2021), a zombie movie that although isn’t nearly as good as Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead it is still entertaining enough. Las Vegas has turned into the land of the zombies and it’s about to be nuked, and that’s when the elite team of Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera and Matthias Schweighöfer is sent to recover millions in cash from the vault of a famous casino. I’ve always loved zombie movies, but this one has big plot holes (for instance, here a horse is faster than a helicopter), in addition to that, I can’t say I’m entirely convinced by Snyder’s new race of super zombies, which are extremely fast and smart enough to avoid traps, and the concept of the zombie king falling in love detracts from the whole living dead concept rather than enrichening a narrative that is unique precisely because of the mindless aspect of the zombie menace. At least we get to see the classic zombies alongside the new ones, so not all is lost. Also I think the ending was actually good. 

It's only been 3 years since I saw John Krasinski’s magnum opus, and now he’s back as director and writer of a very special sequel, A Quiet Place Part II (2020). Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprise their roles and this time we also have some new amazing actors like Cillian Murphy (Peacock). The sequel starts right at the end of the previous film, when a mother and her surviving two children must leave the ruins of what they once called home and thus must venture into the wild, fearing to be attacked by blind alien creatures that detect sound from miles away. Every aspect of the terrifying notion of a world that remains in silence is still in the sequel, and what is even more fascinating is that we get to see how the relationship between the surviving members of the family changes after they run into one last survivor. Something else that caught my attention was the framing sequence at the beginning, which serves as a prequel of sorts and allows to see John Krasinski  reprising his role in the very first day of the attack of the creatures. Unlike the first film, in which everything has already happened, and we only see the family going though a routine that looks like nothing we have ever seen in other horror productions, here we actually get to see normal life and how fast everything gets destroyed after the first attack. Something that I really enjoyed about this sequel is that it goes from the model of surviving in isolation, as was the premise in the first part, to finding other survivors and trying to reclaim a world that seems forever lost. Definitely one of the best films from 2020!

En junio estaba ocupado con mi viaje a Perú, así que en lugar de ver películas, pasé tiempo con mi familia y comí riquísimo en muchos restaurantes. De todos modos, igual tuve tiempo de ver dos películas nuevas: Zack Snyder dirige Army of the Dead (2021), una película de zombis que, aunque no es tan buena como Dawn of the Dead de Snyder, es lo suficientemente entretenida. Las Vegas se ha convertido en la tierra de los zombies y está a punto de ser bombardeada, y es entonces cuando el equipo de élite de Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera y Matthias Schweighöfer es enviado a recuperar millones en efectivo de la bóveda de un famoso casino. Siempre me han gustado las películas de zombies, pero esta tiene gigantescos huecos argumentales (por ejemplo, aquí un caballo es más rápido que un helicóptero), además de eso, no puedo decir que esté completamente convencido de la nueva raza de super-zombis de Snyder, que son lo suficientemente rápidos e inteligentes como para evitar trampas, y el concepto del rey zombi enamorándose resta valor a todo el concepto del muerto viviente en lugar de enriquecer una narrativa que es única precisamente por la ausencia de raciocinio en la amenaza zombi. Al menos podemos ver a los zombis clásicos junto con los nuevos, por lo que no todo está perdido. También creo que el final fue realmente bueno.

Sólo han pasado 3 años desde que vi la obra maestra de John Krasinski, y ahora él ha vuelto como director y escritor de una secuela muy especial, A Quiet Place Part II (2020). Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Millicent Simmonds y Noah Jupe repiten sus papeles y esta vez también tenemos algunos asombrosos actores nuevos como Cillian Murphy (Peacock). La secuela comienza justo al final de la película anterior, cuando una madre y sus dos hijos sobrevivientes deben dejar las ruinas de lo que una vez llamaron hogar y, por lo tanto, deben aventurarse en la naturaleza, con el temor a ser atacados por criaturas alienígenas ciegas que detectan el sonido a kilómetros de distancia. Cada aspecto de la aterradora noción de un mundo que permanece en silencio todavía está en la secuela, y lo que es aún más fascinante es que podemos ver cómo cambia la relación entre los miembros sobrevivientes de la familia después de que se encuentran con un último sobreviviente. Otra cosa que me llamó la atención fue la secuencia de encuadre al principio, que sirve como una especie de precuela y permite ver a John Krasinski retomando su papel en el primer día del ataque de las criaturas. A diferencia de la primera película, en la que ya todo ha sucedido, y sólo vemos a la familia siguiendo una rutina que no se parece a nada que hayamos visto en otras producciones de terror, aquí podemos ver la vida normal y lo rápido que todo se destruye a raíz del primer ataque. Algo que realmente disfruté de esta secuela es que pasa del modelo de supervivencia en aislamiento, como era la premisa en la primera parte, a encontrar otros supervivientes e intentar recuperar un mundo que parece perdido para siempre. ¡Definitivamente una de las mejores películas del 2020!

April Films / películas de abril

An entire month of quarantine would drive anyone crazy. Fortunately, last month I was in good company, watching mostly series but also a few movies. On April 23rd director James Gunn suggested everyone to watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) from home and that’s what we did. It’s great to see Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker and everyone else reprising their roles from Guardians of the Galaxy. This is a fun and fast-paced sequel, and it’s great to see how the relationship between the characters has progressed. Gunn creates an exciting adventure, with a very ambitious threat that puts the entire galaxy at risk. Even if I still prefer the first one, Vol. 2 is just as entertaining as other Marvel movies, and it has amazing moments (like Stan Lee’s cameo while he talks with Uatu the Watcher), plus the inclusion of stars like Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell. 

Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004) are two of the best films Quentin Tarantino has ever directed, and that is saying a lot. Tarantino and Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction) came up with concept and wrote it together, and the result is a fascinating, intense, exciting and violent story that, at the beginning, seems to be only about revenge but that deep down is about love, and the difficulty of letting go the people we love the most. Professional assassin Uma Thurman decides to quit her dangerous job and settle down with an average guy, but before she can ask herself if she is ready to become a wife and a mother, she is attacked by her former associates and killed by Bill, or almost. She survives, stays in comma for years and finally recovers. In the first volume, we witness the protagonist hunting down members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Things have changed over the years, and nothing remains the same. There are so many unforgettable scenes, and it would be difficult to find such ambitious fight scenes like the one that takes place between the protagonist and Lucy Liu. Tarantino creates an intense and pulse-pounding adventure that doesn’t slow down even for a second. In the second volume we learn more about the past of the protagonist, her training years and the romantic relationship she had with Bill, her mentor and leader. In Tarantino’s cinematic universe violence always makes sense, and here violence can be even poetic in some of the scenes, which is always a rare accomplishment. There are many memorable scenes here, like the way in which the protagonist escapes from the graveyard, the fight with Daryl Hannah and, above all, the final confrontation with Bill, magnificently played by David Carradine. The last part of the film is like the calm before the storm, and it underlies all the tensions between the characters, for me, one of my favorite moments is the realization that no matter how much harm Bill has inflicted upon the protagonist, she still loves him deep down, even if she has decided to kill him. Both films are masterpieces, and that’s why I have included them in my personal historic 100 films of all times.

Un mes entero de cuarentena volvería loco a cualquiera. Afortunadamente, el mes pasado estuve en buena compañía, viendo principalmente series pero también algunas películas. El 23 de abril, el director James Gunn sugirió que todos vieran Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) desde casa y eso es lo que hicimos. Fue estupendo ver a Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker y a todos los demás repitiendo sus papeles de Guardians of the Galaxy. Esta es una secuela divertida y de buen ritmo, y es estupendo ver cómo ha progresado la relación entre los personajes. Gunn crea una aventura emocionante, con una amenaza muy ambiciosa que pone en riesgo a toda la galaxia. A pesar de que prefiero el primer volumen, esta continuación es tan entretenida como otras películas de Marvel, y tiene momentos increíbles (como el cameo de Stan Lee mientras habla con Uatu the Watcher), además de la inclusión de estrellas como Sylvester Stallone y Kurt Russell.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) y Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004) son dos de las mejores películas que Quentin Tarantino ha dirigido, y eso es decir mucho. Tarantino y Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction) idearon el concepto y lo escribieron juntos, y el resultado es una historia fascinante, intensa, emocionante y violenta que, al principio, parece ser sólo sobre venganza, pero que en el fondo se trata de amor y la dificultad de dejar ir a las personas que más amamos. La asesina profesional Uma Thurman decide dejar su peligroso trabajo y establecerse con un hombre común y corriente, pero antes de que pueda preguntarse si está lista para convertirse en esposa y madre, es atacada por sus antiguos colegas y Bill la mata, o casi . Ella sobrevive, permanece en coma durante años y finalmente se recupera. En el primer volumen, nosotros vemos a la protagonistas cazando a los miembros del Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Las cosas han cambiado a lo largo de los años, y nada sigue igual. Hay tantas escenas inolvidables, y sería difícil encontrar escenas de lucha tan ambiciosas como la que tiene lugar entre la protagonista y Lucy Liu. Tarantino crea una aventura intensa y palpitante que no se ralentiza ni por un segundo. En el segundo volumen, aprendemos más sobre el pasado de la protagonista, sus años de entrenamiento y la relación romántica que tuvo con Bill, su mentor y líder. En el universo cinematográfico de Tarantino, la violencia siempre tiene sentido, y aquí la violencia puede ser incluso poética en algunas de las escenas, lo que siempre es un logro excepcional. Aquí hay muchas escenas memorables, como la forma en que la protagonista escapa del cementerio, la pelea con Daryl Hannah y, sobre todo, la confrontación final con Bill, interpretado magníficamente por David Carradine. La última parte de la película es como la calma antes de la tormenta, y subyace a todas las tensiones entre los personajes, para mí, uno de mis momentos favoritos es darnos cuenta de que no importa cuánto daño le haya causado Bill a la protagonista, ella todavía lo ama en el fondo, incluso si ha decidido matarlo. Ambas películas son obras maestras, y por eso las he incluido entre mis 100 películas favoritas de todos los tiempos.
