The Avengers # 1 - Kurt Busiek & George Pérez

“And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day the Avengers were born, to fight the foes no single superhero could withstand. Through the years their roster has prospered, changing many times, but their glory has never been denied. Heed the call then, for now… the Avengers Assemble!”, and that in nutshell is everything any new reader might need to know about the Avengers.

As it has been noticed before, one of the main obstacles for new readers who try to get into the DC and Marvel Universe is to find a starting point, especially now when titles get rebooted constantly and there are hundreds of first issues. Decades ago, of course, that wasn’t the case. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the Avengers in 1963, and it took almost 4 decades and over 400 issues for the title to be restarted with a fresh number one. And for such a special occasion, Marvel editor Tom Brevoort put together the best creative team of the late 90s: Kurt Busiek and George Pérez. Busiek had already become a legend in the industry thanks to Marvels and Astro City, and Pérez had become synonym with grandiose superhero epics thanks to his participation in Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Founding members / miembros fundadores
“Once an Avenger…” (originally published in Avengers # 1, February 1998) is a double-sized issue that includes an action-packed prolog in which Marvel’s most famous superheroes are trying to adapt to life after seemingly returning from the death due to the Onslaught saga; followed by Chapter 1: And There Came a Day..., Chapter 2: Avengers Assemble!, Chapter 3: A Common Threat... and Chapter 4: ...To Fight the Foes... All chapters take their titles from the phrase I quoted in the first paragraph, a phrase I memorized when I read my first Avengers comic book while still in high school, which happened to be from this particular era (issue # 27, to be more precise).
18 + 19 panels
“Once an avenger, always an avenger”, and that proves to be true in this first issue, in which every member, active, inactive or honorary, of the most important superhero team in the Marvel universe, shows up in these pages, in one way or another. Busiek, an expert in Marvel history, manages to include everyone in a manner that is meaningful for the story. At the same time, Pérez’s has always been the undisputed master when it comes to portraying large teams and hundreds of characters in the same page, and he does a magnificent work here.

In the 80s Pérez was one of the best artists in the industry and the quality of his work was still amazing in the 90s, in fact, some might consider that his best work can be found in the historic Avengers / JLA crossover from 2003. Unlike other artists who were popular in the 80s and somehow lost their touch in the 90s, Pérez remained at the top of his game. His talent shines in iconic splash pages such as the one that shows the statue of the founding members of the Avengers. Famous for being able to work with multiple panels, Pérez has some impressive fighting sequences in two 18-panel pages. Of course, the double page spread inside Avengers mansion is a magnificent example of composition as well as personal characteristics, every hero portrayed there has a unique body language and posture, and even readers who are unfamiliar with those heroes can understand how their attitudes and behaviors just by looking at this page. Of course, the fighting scenes with Morgan Le Fay, the main villain in this first issue, are also stunning. And Pérez's wraparound cover is awesome!

I had read this first issue years ago, and now that I reread it, I enjoyed it on so many levels. From the very beginning, there is a strong sense of wonder and excitement that is complemented by a solid script and a carefully balanced plot that allows 40 avengers to appear on the page and they all get to be on the spotlight at least once. Busiek and Pérez are definitely one of the best creative teams ever!
