Free Comic Book Day in only 4 months!

As I did in 2012 and 2013 (only 7 years ago, yikes!), I wanted to talk about a very special date for comic book fans: Free Comic Book Day! Every year, in the US and other countries as well, the first Saturday of May is a celebration of the 9th art and readers can get free comics from their local comic shop.

I might be going to Bizarro World on May 4th, here in Davis, to get a few of the FCBD books, but I’m also getting 3 from DCBS. These are the ones I’m most interested in: Emil Ferris' My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Deadly Class Killer Set (I got the first issue of the original Image series way back in 2014) and Treasury of British Comics Presents Funny Pages (I’m kind of surprised that Rebellion chose to print this instead of 2000 AD, for the past 8 years I’ve been getting the 2000 AD FCBD and it feels bad to put an end to that tradition but at the same time, this volume will contain works by Leo Baxendale and many other legendary British authors that Alan Moore has mentioned and praised many times).

There are 51 FCBD books for 2019 here:

May comic / cómics de mayo

In May once again I celebrated Free Comic Book Day by going to The Turning Page, Milwaukee’s finest comic shop! (which, it so happens, is conveniently located in the east side, a couple of blocks from my house). This year I got 4 FCBD books, but this is probably the first time (in the past 5 or 6 years) that 2000AD wasn’t as entertaining as I thought it would be, however Scout Comics’ The Mall was surprisingly good. I really enjoyed the first issues of The Barrier, A Walk Through Hell and Jeepers Creepers. Sacred Creatures, American Gods and Thor continue to be really enjoyable series. DC Nation #0 had one good story (the one written by Tom King). I’m having so much fun reading the 12 trade paperbacks that I got, and I’ll be reviewing some of them in the next few weeks. Finally, my favorite comic of the month was The Highest House #4. And now without further ado here are May comics as per solicitations:

Night has only just fallen, but strangers already creep through Whitechapel with the worst of intentions and the weapons to see them through. Ellis' ongoing story of a flooded London is beautifully illustrated in jaw-dropping detail by Paul Duffield, and every page is as much a work of art as it is a compelling and multi-layered story.

FREAKANGELS TP VOL 4
(W) Warren Ellis (A/CA) Paul Duffield. Volume Four of award-winning author Warren Ellis' ongoing web comic, FREAKANGELS, is here! This installment collects the entire fourth arc of the post-apocalyptic saga into 144 gorgeous, full-color pages. Twenty-three years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years ago, the world ended. Today, eleven strange 23-year-olds are living in and defending Whitechapel, maybe the last real settlement in flooded London. They've made a new friend, and together they successfully defended their home from raiders - but the post-apocalyptic drowned London that the eleven Freakangels survive in is never a safe place, and never surrounded by friends. In fact, there's a serial killer stalking in their midst, and one of their own has broken their most valued rule. In FREAKANGELS: VOLUME FOUR, as the clan faces danger from nearly every direction, it's time to really take a look at what happened six years ago. Back when there were twelve FREAKANGELS. Back when they were all running for their lives. Because a lot of things have changed, but maybe not as many as they thought... Ellis' ongoing story of a flooded London is beautifully illustrated in jaw-dropping detail by Paul Duffield, and every page is as much a work of art as it is a compelling and multi-layered story.

They've made a new friend, and together they've successfully defended their home from outside attackers, a ghost from the past, and threats from within. In FREAKANGELS: VOLUME FIVE, everything you thought you knew about the 'Angels is wrong. In fact, much of what *they* thought was true simply hadn't been sufficiently examined. While Alice keeps watch over Whitechapel from the watchtower, the twelve Freakangels - that's right, *twelve* - down below are forced to re-examine their lives... and their deaths. Ellis' ongoing story of a flooded London is beautifully illustrated in jaw-dropping detail by Paul Duffield, and every page is as much a work of art as it is a compelling and multi-layered story.

The body count will rise when Dunn's trigger finger is forced to settle new problems with the only solution he knows.

WALK THROUGH HELL #1
(W) Garth Ennis (A) Goran Sudzuka (CA) Andy Clarke. So these two FBI agents walk into a warehouse… Special Agents Shaw and McGregor handle the routine cases nowadays, which is just the way Shaw likes it. McGregor is younger, more dedicated, hanging onto some measure of idealism whatever the world might throw at him. When two fellow agents go missing inside a Long Beach warehouse, Shaw and McGregor are sent to investigate. But what they find waiting is far from routine, as the local police have already discovered to their cost. Before the night is out, our heroes will encounter terror beyond their most appalling nightmares-in a place where the night may never end at all. A new kind of horror story for modern America, written by Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Boys, Crossed) and drawn by Goran Sudzuka (Y: The Last Man, Hellblazer).

Realmente disfruté los primeros números de The Barrier, A Walk Through Hell y Jeepers Creepers. Sacred Creatures, American Gods y Thor continúan siendo series realmente agradables.

AMERICAN GODS: MY AINSEL #3

ASTONISHING X-MEN #11
UN HOMBRE LLAMADO X Parte 5.

FREAKANGELS TP VOL 2

HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES

WALK THROUGH HELL #1
May Comics / cómics de mayo

I guess, one way or another, we all celebrated Free Comic Book Day in May. However, unlike previous years, instead of my usual 5 FCBD books I only got 2 (shame on you, DCBS!). I got Archie, which was surprisingly good and 2000AD, which was extraordinary (I absolutely loved it). Marvel continues to do an outstanding job with monthly series like Silver Surfer and International Iron Man (I didn’t think I could enjoy Bendis and Maleev’s title so much). Of course, nothing could be better than the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1, almost 1000 pages of classic X-Men stories, mostly illustrated by John Byrne, one of my all-time favorite artists and the reason why I decided to get this gigantic book. Speaking of reprints, Gaiman and Zulli’s The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch was also wonderful. Strange Fruit continues to be one of the best miniseries (and J.G. Jones art is top notch). Finally, there were two very interesting new series in May: the first issue of Renato Jones was aesthetically delightful but the best comic of the month would be Cinema Purgatorio #1, an impressive anthology that reunites authors such as Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Kieron Gillen, Gabriel Andrade, Kevin O’Neil, Ignacio Calero, etc. And now, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:

CINEMA PURGATORIO #1
(W) Alan Moore & Various (A) Kevin O'Neil & Various (CA) Gabriel Andrade. Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill invite you, and some of the finest creators in comics, in to join them in a different kind of dark: Cinema Purgatorio! This ongoing monthly series will feature Alan and Kevin in every issue and is their first major new project together since League of Extraordinary Gentlemen! Anthology has become a dirty word, so far be it from us to clean it up. Instead we'll shine our light onto the cutting edge of sequential art, with black and white artwork to allow illustrator's pure visions, and the greatest assembly of writing talent ever gathered on one series. Every issue is perfect-bound, with no ads, and all of the works are very long-form, there are no collections planned before 2018. Jump in now and embrace the new future of comics. The one of which Alan Moore has always dreamed. It's here, now. Hiding in the dark corner. Welcome to Cinema Purgatorio.

In collaboration with artists Dave Cockrum and John Byrne, Claremont crafted a run still heralded as a definitive era on the book. Hablando de reimpresiones, "The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch" de Gaiman y Zulli fue también maravilloso.

Bienvenido a Cinema Purgatorio.

EMPRESS #2

FACTS IN THE CASE OF THE DEPARTURE OF MISS FINCH HC

FCBD 2016 2000 AD SPECIAL

INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN #3

JUDGE DREDD #1 IDW'S GREATEST HITS

RENATO JONES: THE ONE% #1
