Conan the Barbarian # 9 - Thomas & Windsor-Smith

During the first year of Conan’s adventures he is around 18 or 19 years old. He’s a strong Cimmerian, an experienced warrior, a good combatant. The young barbarian has encountered many supernatural menaces and he has triumphed over them. It is not without irony that several of the monsters he has slain are similar to real animals which he had never seen before. For instance, Yag Kosha, the dying creature from beyond the stars, was similar to an elephant. And so, at the beginning of “Garden of Fear” (September 1971), he stares at real elephants, confusing them at first with a group of Yag Koshas.

He has crossed a valley protected by mammoths and now he finds himself abruptly immobilized as a huge garden of carnivorous plants encircles the tower of a sinister winged man. Who is this man of blue skin and feathered wings? And what kind of technology did he use to build such a sleek-looking tower? None of it matters to the young barbarian, as he has but one goal: to rescue Jenna, who has been abducted by this flying foe.

A stampede of elephants, produced by Conan, destroys the garden of carnivorous plants. And thus the Cimmerian swiftly climbs the walls of the baleful tower. On this day, the barbarian will fight against the most mysterious adversary ever: “Is he merely a freak of nature, dwelling in eternal solitude-- or the lone survivor of some forgotten race which reigned and vanished before the coming of man? Conan cannot know--- nor may we. Yet there seems no other sign of life in all the sprawling valley”.

Twice has Jenna been captured by flying monsters: in Shadizar she was the victim of a gigantic bat worshipped as a god by a group of fanatics, and now, again, another flying menace has set his gaze upon her. Unable to comprehend his rival’s guttural language, Conan attacks him savagely, and after a fierce battle, the Cimmerian rises victoriously.

Roy Thomas creates suspense and intrigue with this winged devil, but it’s thanks to Barry Windsor-Smith’s art that the story really shines. The British artist comes up with powerful images, from the extraordinary panels of wild animals and forests, to the design of the flying adversary. But the pages that surprise me the most are the ones with the combat scenes, and also the inner architecture of the tower, which sometimes looks like an extraterrestrial spaceship and sometimes like a high-tech stronghold. There are many questions left unanswered, and because of Barry, our curiosity increases with each panel.
____________________________________________________________________________________

Conan no puedo saberlo-- tampoco nosotros.
