November films / películas de noviembre

Unlike other months, in November I had the opportunity to go to the movies several times. At last, I saw Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (2013), an example of intensity and creativity, an emotional journey that captures our attention since the initial sequence. Sandra Bullock’s best performance to date (and a great characterization by George Clooney) turns this sci-fi odyssey into one of the best films of 2013. Gravity isn’t just a woman struggling to survive, it’s also an allegory about despair, about death, about coming to terms with loss, and about letting go, even if that means the possibility of endlessly floating in the vacuum of space. 


Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins are back for the sequel of the God of Thunder. Thor: The Dark World (2013) pays homage to some classic Thor comics, but at the same time reinvents the idea of a hero trapped between two worlds: Asgard and Earth. My favorite scenes: the attack of the dark elves and the destruction of Asgard… and once again Loki proves to be one of the most fascinating mythological nemeses. But I still wish Kenneth Branagh would have directed it… 


The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) revisits the themes of poverty, exploitation and a totalitarian government. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are forced to fight to the death in the 75th edition of the Hunger Games, by orders of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Just as exciting as the first movie, this time we get a more in-depth look at the relationship between the protagonist and her two lovers. As well as the beginning of the revolution. I really enjoyed it.


A week ago, the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. It’s hard to believe that a TV series could be endure after half a century, but surely there is no other out there as exciting, though-provoking, touching and imaginative as Doctor Who. England has a tradition of exceptionally good sci-fi, whether in print (2000AD) or on the screen. It doesn’t matter if you weren’t born in the 60s, you can catch any random episode and you’ll be immediately hooked. I only started 3 years ago and I’m a fan. The Day of the Doctor (2013) is a great way to commemorate this long tradition, a great celebration of the past (which includes the participation of every incarnation of the Doctor in this very ambitious story) and probably the best Doctor Who episode I’ve ever seen. Directed by Nick Hurran and written by Steven Moffat, The Day of the Doctor reunites fan-favorites Matt Smith and David Tennant (as well as Billie Piper and Jenna Coleman), who are forced to face John Hurt, the earliest incarnation of the Doctor, the man responsible for destroying his own planet and the entire race of the Time Lords. I wish I could express all my excitement and admiration for one of the finest sci-fi creations, but if it took them 50 years to surprise, delight and impress me, then what chance do I have to do the same in 50 seconds or less? 


The Paperboy (2012), directed by Lee Daniels, is about murder and some sexually depraved individuals. Zac Efron is an innocent boy who falls in love with Nicole Kidman. At the same time, his brother (Matthew McConaughey), is investigating a murder case. But throughout the investigation, his furtive homosexual encounters could very well cost him his life. 


Steve McQueen’s Shame (2011) is the dramatic tale of a sex addict (Michael Fassbender). A man obsessed with having sex 24/7 until his sister (Carey Mulligan) arrives home uninvited. It’s quite alluring to observe Fassbender’s sexual encounters with prostitutes, his constant masturbatory sessions (both at home and in the office) and even his sexual experimentation with men. McQueen’s sober cinematography shows the painful joy of a man that is compelled to have sex several times a day… and how this ruins his life. 

Based on Daniel Clowes famous comic book and directed by Terry Zwigoff, Ghost World (2001) is a poignant and lucid portrayal of the twilight of adolescence and the dawn of adulthood, as experienced by two girls: Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson. Thora Birch is a girl that refuses to accept any responsibility and resists entering into the adult world, and when she meets Steve Buscemi a strange relationship begins. I was also thrilled to see the talented Brad Renfro, one of my favorite actors (he died in 2008 before turning 26). 


Pau Masó is the director, writer and main actor of Aleksandr’s Price (2013), a story about an innocent boy who becomes a male prostitute, and ends up being gang banged by a bunch of sadistic guys. Bad Boy Street (2012), on the other hand, is a love story about a famous boy actor and a mature man that takes place in Paris.


I also had time to watch 3 amazing short films. The Wilding (2012), directed and written by Grant Scicluna, uncovers the horror of jail: Reef Ireland is a teenager about to go out on parole. But as soon as he leaves, his lover -another boy- gets brutally raped and almost killed; unapologetic savagery and visual economy define and give strength to this extraordinary Australian short film. Abdi Nazemian’s Revolution (2012) is a bittersweet chronicle of first love, teenage sexual confusion and the Iranian revolution. Mojean Aria is an Iranian kid who comes from a wealthy family. When he starts feeling attracted to Zach Cumer, the cleaning lady’s son, problems begin. And once his conservative and homophobic father finds out, things get even worse. Finally, Mark Pariselli’s Frozen Roads (2010) focuses on two teenagers: Kevin De Carli and Kyle Mac; raised in very religious families, these two boys will have to fight to discover their true sexuality.


This has been quite a Teutonic month. Silent Youth (2012), is a German film directed by Diemo Kemmesies. Partly inspired by Gus Van Sant, this is a very down-to-earth portrayal of youth, as well as the difficulties of getting to know someone. Martin Bruchmann and Josef Mattes are two young men who meet on the streets and become friends. Soon, one thing leads to another, and as they have their first gay sexual experience, something sinister and terrible is awaken.


German director Simon Bischoff documents the life of an underage male prostitute in Er Moretto - Von Liebe leben (1984). Alevino Di Silvio is 14 years old when he starts having sex with men in order to survive in the streets. With a veritable collection of sexual depravities and crimes, this turns out to be very shocking indeed.


Finally, Rückenwind (2009), written and directed by Jan Krüger is centered in a young gay couple: Sebastian Schlecht and Eric Golub. As they travel through the German woods, they meet a woman and his son (Denis Alevi), but not even their apparently happy life is immune to tragedy. Krüger had already surprised me with the brilliant Freunde (a short film), but I must say Rückenwind wasn’t as great as I hoped... □

A diferencia de otros meses, en noviembre tuve la oportunidad de ir al cine varias veces. Por fin vi "Gravity" (2013), de Alfonso Cuarón, un ejemplo de intensidad y creatividad, un viaje emocionante que captura nuestra atención desde la secuencia inicial. La brillante actuación de Sandra Bullock (y la estupenda caracterización de George Clooney) convierten esta odisea de ciencia ficción en uno de los mejores films del 2013. "Gravity" no es sólo una mujer luchando por sobrevivir, es también una alegoría sobre la desesperación, la muerte, la aceptación de la pérdida, y sobre todo el desprendimiento, incluso si esto significa flotar sin fin en el vacío del espacio.

Mis escenas favoritas: el ataque de los elfos oscuros y la destrucción de Asgard… y una vez más Loki demuestra ser uno de los más fascinantes némesis mitológicos. Pero aún así me hubiese gustado que la dirigiese Kenneth Branagh...

Jennifer Lawrence y Josh Hutcherson son forzados a pelear a muerte en la edición 75 de los Juegos del Hambre, por órdenes del presidente Snow (Donald Sutherland). Tan emocionante como la primera película, esta vez vemos de cerca la relación entre la protagonista y sus dos amantes. Así como el comienzo de la revolución. Realmente la disfruté.


Hace una semana, el mundo celebró el 50 aniversario de "Doctor Who". Es difícil creer que una serie de televisión podría resistir medio siglo, pero seguro que no hay ninguna otra tan emocionante, reflexiva, conmovedora e imaginativa como "Doctor Who". Inglaterra tiene una tradición de ciencia ficción excepcionalmente buena, ya sea impresa (2000AD) o en la pantalla. No importa si no naciste en los 60, puedes ver cualquier episodio al azar y quedarás enganchado inmediatamente. Yo empecé hace 3 años y soy un fan. "The Day of the Doctor" (2013) es una gran manera de conmemorar esta larga tradición, una gran celebración del pasado (que incluye la participación de todas las encarnaciones del Doctor en esta ambiciosa historia) y probablemente el mejor episodio de "Doctor Who" que he visto. Dirige Nick Hurran y escribe Steven Moffat, "The Day of the Doctor" reúne a los favoritos de los fans Matt Smith y David Tennant (así como a Billie Piper y Jenna Coleman), quienes son obligados a encarar a John Hurt, la más antigua encarnación del Doctor, el hombre responsable de destruir su propio planeta y toda la raza de los Señores del Tiempo. "The Paperboy" (2012), del director Lee Daniels, va de asesinatos y algunos individuos sexualmente depravados. Zac Efron es un chico inocente que se enamora de Nicole Kidman. Al mismo tiempo, su hermano (Matthew McConaughey), está investigando un caso de asesinato. Pero durante la investigación, sus furtivos encuentros homosexuales bien podrían costarle la vida.

"Shame" (2011) de Steve McQueen es el dramático relato de un adicto al sexo (Michael Fassbender). Un hombre obsesionado con tener sexo las 24 horas del día hasta que su hermana (Carey Mulligan) aparece en su casa sin haber sido invitada. Es bastante atrayente observar los encuentros sexuales de Fassbender con prostitutas, sus constantes sesiones masturbatorias (tanto en casa como en la oficina) e incluso su experimentación sexual con hombres. La sobria cinematografía de McQueen muestra el doloroso goce de un hombre que se siente impulsado a tener sexo varias veces al día... y la ruina que esto conlleva.


Basado en el famoso cómic de Daniel Clowes y dirigido por Terry Zwigoff, "Ghost World" (2001) es un relevante y lúcido retrato del ocaso de la adolescencia y el amanecer de la adultez, tal como lo experimentan dos chicas: Thora Birch y Scarlett Johansson. Thora Birch es una chica que se rehúsa a aceptar responsabilidades y se resiste a entrar al mundo adulto, y cuando conoce a Steve Buscemi una extraña relación empieza. También estuve entusiasmado al ver al talentoso Brad Renfro, uno de mis actores favoritos (murió el 2008, antes de cumplir 26 años). 


Pau Masó es el director, escritor y actor principal de "Aleksandr’s Price" (2013), una historia sobre un chico inocente que se convierte en un prostituto, y termina siendo violado por un montón de tipos sádicos. "Bad Boy Street" (2012), por otro lado, es una historia de amor sobre un famoso actor joven y un hombre maduro que ocurre en París.


También tuve tiempo de ver 3 asombrosos cortometrajes. "The Wilding" (2012), del director y guionista Grant Scicluna, revela el horror de la cárcel: Reef Ireland es un adolescente a punto de salir bajo observación, pero apenas se va, su amante -otro muchacho- es brutalmente violado y casi muere; el salvajismo sin disculpas y la economía visual definen y dan fuerza a este extraordinario cortometraje australiano.  "Revolution" (2012), de Abdi Nazemian, es una agridulce crónica del primer amor, la confusión sexual adolescente y la revolución en Irán. Mojean Aria es un chiquillo iraní de una familia adinerada. Cuando empieza a sentirse atraído por Zach Cumer, el hijo de la empleada, los problemas empiezan. Y cuando su conservador y homofóbico padre se entere, todo empeorará. Finalmente, "Frozen Roads" (2010) de Mark Pariselli, se enfoca en dos adolescentes: Kevin De Carli y Kyle Mac; criados en familias muy religiosas, estos dos chicos tendrán que pelear para descubrir su verdadera sexualidad.


Este ha sido un mes bastante teutónico. "Silent Youth" (2012), es un film alemán dirigido por Diemo Kemmesies. El director alemán Simon Bischoff documenta la vida de un prostituto menor de edad en "Er Moretto - Von Liebe leben" (1984). Finalmente, "Rückenwind" (2009), escrito y dirigido por Jan Krüger se centra en una joven pareja gay: Sebastian Schlecht y Eric Golub. Mientras viajan por los bosques alemanes, conocen a una mujer y su hijo (Denis Alevi), pero ni siquiera su vida aparentemente feliz es inmune a la tragedia. Krüger ya me había sorprendido con el brillante cortometraje "Freunde", pero debo decir que Rückenwind no fue tan buena como esperaba... □

March comic books / cómics de marzo

So far this has been my favorite month of the year. So many great comics at the same time! Let’s start with two very good Avengers (Uncanny & Young) issues, and a very interesting first chapter for Judge Dredd Year One (which simply proves that you need a British writer to write about this British creation). Image’s Sex is another promising new series. Mike Carey’s arc about zombies in the Unwritten universe is some of the best stuff I’ve seen from Vertigo in quite a long time, really amazing. But this time the best comics don’t come from the United States, at least not directly. I cannot emphasize how much I have enjoyed reading the first 6 volumes of Neon Genesis Evagelion (which have been collected in two oversized volumes). But if I had to choose the best comic I’ve read not only in March but in the first trimester of 2013 it would be Judge Dredd Origins. It’s so awesome that I’m still trying to process the intensity of it all. Once I feel ready I’ll write a review about it. You can count on it. Hasta ahora este ha sido mi mes favorito del año. ¡Tantos cómics estupendos al mismo tiempo! Empecemos con dos muy buenos números de Avengers (Uncanny y Young) y un muy interesante primer capítulo de Judge Dredd: Year One (que simplemente demuestra que necesitas un escritor británico para escribir sobre esta creación británica). Sex de Image es otra prometedora nueva serie. El arco de Mike Carey sobre zombis en el universo de Unwritten es de lo mejor que he visto en Vertigo últimamente, realmente asombroso. Pero esta vez los mejores cómics no vienen de Estados Unidos, al menos no directamente. No puedo hacer énfasis en lo mucho que disfruté leyendo los primeros 6 volúmenes de Neon Genesis Evagelion (que han sido compilados en dos tomos extra grandes). Pero si tuviera que elegir el mejor cómic que he leído no sólo en marzo sino en el primer trimestre del 2013, sería Judge Dredd: Origins es tan genial que todavía estoy procesándolo. Cuando me sienta preparado, escribiré una reseña. Pueden contar con ello. Y sin mayores preámbulos aquí van los cómics de marzo:

SEX #1 (MR)
Finalmente hay una buena razón para entrar a una tienda de cómics: para comprar SEXO. Simon Cooke se ha retirado de su ‘estilo de vida alternativo’ y ha regresado a la ciudad que había jurado proteger. Ahora es un ciudadano común y corriente… por fin el término ‘adulto’ se aplicará al sexo.
