Mind the Gap # 2 - Jim McCann & Rodin Esquejo

I think I was 12 years old when I first read a Sherlock Holmes book, and in an instant I became a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation. Who doesn’t enjoy following clues and solving mysteries? Evidently, in the 21st century the classic ‘whodunit’ has changed. And “Mind the Gap” is a nice example of the creative alternatives we might find in this particular literary genre.

For starters, after being targeted for extermination, Elle, the protagonist, has survived a brutal assassination attempt. Except she hasn’t truly survived it. She’s in a comma, and yet she still retains her consciousness in an immaterial limbo inhabited by spectral people. She has one ability that no other “wraith” has… she can temporarily possess the body of people that are close to death, as she does at the beginning of the chapter. Will she learn to control this ability in time to save herself?

Elle is in-between places. She’s neither alive nor dead. Her comatose status seems to defy the pre-established natural order because there’s an impasse between symbolic death and real death. The real death should be the consequence of a heart that suddenly stops beating, the symbolic death, on the other hand is something cultural. The funerary rite is what helps humanity reorganize itself. Animals live and die anonymously, so to speak. For humans, unity and irreplaceability must be protected and remembered through language, that's why we speak of the dead, why we place tombstones and write epitaphs, thus creating what Jacques Lacan called "a second death" that pertains to the order of the symbolic.

So it’s quite interesting to see that while Elle is safe and sound in the symbolic limbo in which she is residing now, her body is still at the mercy of those who plotted her demise. If they find her in the hospital, she will die for real. In only two issues, writer Jim McCann has planted the kernel of doubt. Everyone is a suspect. And since every character that has appeared in these pages could potentially be the killer or killers, Jim has filled the comics with clues, inviting us to imitate Sherlock Holmes and come up with the most logical conclusion.

In the hands of another penciler, including so many clues with subtlety would have been a difficult task. It was necessary to have an accomplished artist such as Rodin Esquejo. Rodin has a very clean line, a well-defined style that relies slightly on photographic realism while incorporating a certain fluidity that is unique to the comic medium. His clear brushes are also accompanied by the necessary level of detail required for each scene. So it’s easy for us, if we pay attention, to identify the hidden signs, the red herrings. As I read the letters section I was amazed to see the amount of readers that had already started hypothesizing about the identities of the perpetrators. 

Jim and Rodin are doing a truly outstanding job with “Mind the Gap”, forcing us to revisit their pages over and over again, just to make sure we haven’t missed any clue. You don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce that the best thing you can do now is read (or reread) “Mind the Gap”.

Creo que tenía 12 años cuando leí por primera vez un libro de Sherlock Holmes, y al instante me convertí en un fan de la creación de Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. ¿Quién no disfruta seguir pistas y resolver misterios? Es evidente que en el siglo XXI, el clásico "¿quién es el culpable?" ha cambiado. Y “Mind the Gap” es un buen ejemplo de las alternativas creativas que podríamos encontrar en este género literario.

Para empezar, luego de estar en la mira, Elle, la protagonista, ha sobrevivido un brutal intento de asesinato. Excepto que realmente no lo ha sobrevivido. Ella está en coma, y aun así retiene su conciencia en un limbo inmaterial habitado por seres espectrales. Ella tiene una habilidad que ningún otro "fantasma" tiene... puede tomar posesión temporal de los cuerpos cercanos a la muerte, y así lo hace al inicio del capítulo. ¿Aprenderá a controlar esta habilidad a tiempo para salvarse? 

Elle está en el entre-dos-mundos. Ni viva ni muerta, su estado comatoso parece desafiar el orden natural preestablecido porque hay un impasse entre la muerte simbólica y la muerte real. La muerte real debería ser la consecuencia de un corazón que deja de latir, la muerte simbólica, por otro lado, es algo cultural. El rito funerario es lo que ayuda a la humanidad a reorganizarse. Los animales viven y mueren anónimamente, por así decirlo. Para los humanos, la unidad y lo irreemplazable deben ser protegidos y recordados a través del lenguaje, es por eso que hablamos sobre los muertos, es por eso que colocamos lápidas y escribimos epitafios, creando de este modo lo que Jacques Lacan llamaba una segunda muerte que pertenece al orden de lo simbólico.

Así que es muy interesante ver que mientras Elle está sana y salva en el limbo simbólico en el que reside ahora, su cuerpo está todavía a merced de aquellos que planearon su muerte. Si la encuentran en el hospital, morirá de verdad. En sólo dos números, el escritor Jim McCann ha plantado la semilla de la duda. Todos son sospechosos. Y como todos los personajes que han desfilado por estas páginas podrían ser potencialmente el o los asesinos, Jim ha llenado los cómics con pistas, invitándonos a imitar a Sherlock Holmes para llegar a la más lógica conclusión.

En manos de otro dibujante, incluir tantas pistas con sutileza habría sido tarea difícil. Era necesario contar con un habilidoso artista como Rodin Esquejo. Rodin tiene una línea muy limpia, un estilo bien definido que se apoya ligeramente en el realismo fotográfico mientras incorpora una cierta fluidez que es propia del medio del cómic. Sus claras pinceladas también están acompañadas por el nivel necesario de detalles que requiere cada escena. Así que es fácil para nosotros, si prestamos atención, identificar las señales escondidas. Al leer la sección de cartas me asombró ver la cantidad de lectores que aventuraban una hipótesis sobre la identidad de los culpables. 

Jim y Rodin están haciendo un grandioso trabajo con “Mind the Gap”, obligándonos a revisar sus páginas una y otra vez, para asegurarnos de no pasar ninguna pista por alto. No hace falta ser Sherlock Holmes para deducir que lo mejor que se puede hacer ahora es leer (o releer) “Mind the Gap”.

Although slightly delayed, it’s time to talk about August comics, or at least some of them. First of all we have “The Boys” getting closer to its final issue, and there is so much going on here that I simply can’t wait for the next issue. Morning Glories continues to deliver a strong story, and with issue 21 artist Rodin Esquejo pays homage to Morning Glories # 1. Great stuff. Think Tank is August’s best new series (and I’ll review it soon). I’ll update this post when I finish reading everything. And now, without further ado, August comics as per solicitations.

Mind the Gap # 1 - Jim McCann & Rodin Esquejo

Elle Peterssen, a normal girl, is attacked at the subway station. She has no enemies and yet a lot of people seemed to be after her. Now that she is in a comma, her friends and relatives try to get some answers. What is the mystery behind her attackers? And why on Earth does she have more brain activity than any normal human being (comatose condition not withstanding)?

I must admit I had never read anything from Jim McCann before, although I had interacted with him a few times on the Bendis board. When I saw he was launching his new creator-owned project I became interested. Perhaps I felt like I owed him a chance after talking online with him. But there is something else that seduced me about this project: Rodin Esquejo. If I would have to choose my favorite new cover artist from the past couple of years it would be Esquejo. I remember one of the main reasons that made me buy the first issue of Morning Glories was his amazing cover. And now I had the chance to see him doing interior art, of course I wasn’t going to miss that!

And I’m glad I preordered the first issue of Mind the Gap. Jim has written a pulse pounding thriller, with emotion, action, drama and some humorous moments; not only that, he manages to flesh out the main characters of the series while including a bunch of eater eggs that detail-loving fans such as myself will be grateful for.

There is something else that I really enjoyed about this opening chapter. Elle is an in-between place, she’s neither death nor fully alive. She is in a comma but she is also conscious on a strange and ethereal limbo. I consider this an interesting approach to Jacques Lacan's concept of symbolic death. I’ll try to explain it in simple words: There is an impasse between symbolic death and actual (real) death. Because death is not only the absence of life, it’s so much more than that, especially to us. The need for a symbolic death becomes patently necessary for people. Lacan defined the symbolic death as a narrative of closure, as the final sentence one must utter in order to let go of the dead ones. If every culture in the planet respects some sort of funerary rites it is precisely because of that. The real death comes naturally when a heart stops beating, but the symbolic death is something cultural, something that depends on any given individual and the ability to cope with loss. Coming to terms with death means to be able to write that epitaph in our head, to be able to understand someone else's life and then to let go of it.

So I consider that Elle is an especially courageous girl, as she hears others talking about her as if she were dead and still refuses to believe that this is the end. Can her consciousness return to her body? Nobody knows, but there’s one thing that worries her, if the people that tried to kill her failed, then it won’t be long before they come after her. Once again, Image is giving us a very promising new series with absolutely fantastic art by Rodin Esquejo and vibrant colors by Sonia Oback. And we should also admire the gorgeous logo design by Michael Lapinski (not only one of my friends from the Bendis board but also an author that has contributed to The Gathering just I have more than a few times). Mind the Gap is definitely worth checking out. I highly recommend it.

Elle Peterssen, una chica normal, es atacada en la estación del metro. No tiene enemigos y sin embargo mucha gente la persigue. Ahora que está en coma, sus amigos y familiares intentan encontrar algunas respuestas. ¿Cuál es el misterio detrás de sus atacantes? ¿Y por qué, a pesar de estar en coma, su cerebro registra una actividad por encima de cualquier escala?

Debo admitir que nunca había leído algo de Jim McCann antes, aunque había interactuado con él varias veces en la página de Bendis. Cuando vi que anunciaba su nuevo proyecto personal, me interesé. Tal vez sentí que le debía una oportunidad después de hablar con él vía internet.  Pero hay algo más que me sedujo sobre este proyecto: Rodin Esquejo. Si tuviera que elegir a mi nuevo portadista favorito de los últimos dos años sería Esquejo. Recuerdo que una de las principales razones que me llevaron a comprar el primer ejemplar de Morning Glories fue su asombrosa portada. Y ahora que tenía la oportunidad de verlo dibujando absolutamente todo, sabía que no podía pasar esto por alto.

Y me alegra haber comprado el primer número de "Mind the Gap" por adelantado. Jim ha escrito un thriller intenso, con emoción, acción, drama y algunos momentos humorísticos; no sólo eso, se las ha arreglado para darle forma a los personajes principales y también ha incluido algunas pistas ocultas que los fans atentos al detalle sabrán apreciar.

Hay algo más que disfruté de este capítulo inicial. Elle está en el 'entre dos mundos', no está muerta ni viva del todo. Está en coma pero también está consciente en un extraño y etéreo limbo. Considero que este es un interesante enfoque al concepto de muerte simbólica de Jacques Lacan. De manera resumida, hay un impasse entre la muerte simbólica y la muerte de hecho (real). Porque la muerte no es sólo la ausencia de vida, es mucho más que eso, especialmente para nosotros. La necesidad de una muerte simbólica es necesaria para la gente. Lacan definía la muerte simbólica como una narrativa de cierre, como la sentencia final que uno debe murmurar para dejar ir a los muertos. Si cada cultura en el planeta respeta algún tipo de rito funerario es precisamente por eso. La muerte real llega naturalmente cuando el corazón deja de latir, pero la muerte simbólica es algo cultural, algo que depende del individuo y de su capacidad para lidiar con la pérdida. Aceptar la muerte significa ser capaces de escribir ese epitafio en nuestras cabezas, ser capaces de entender la vida de alguien y asumir su final.

Así que considero que Elle es una chica especialmente valiente porque aunque escucha a otros hablar sobre ella como si estuviera muerta, se rehúsa a creer que este es el fin. ¿Puede su consciencia regresar a su cuerpo? Nadie lo sabe, sólo hay una certeza... si la gente que intentó matarla ha fallado, entonces no tardarán mucho en encontrarla una segunda vez. Nuevamente, Image nos presenta una prometedora serie con el arte absolutamente grandioso de Rodin Esquejo y vibrantes colores Sonia Oback. Y también deberíamos admirar el fantástico logo diseñado por Michael Lapinski (que además de ser mi amigo en la página de Bendis también ha colaborado, al igual que yo, en The Gathering en varias ocasiones). "Mind the Gap" es realmente recomendable.

February comic books/ Cómics de febrero

February was the shortest month on the year (yes, even on a leap year); fortunately a dozen of comic books arrived to my doorstep just in the nick of time. I really enjoyed Avengers Academy and the first issue of Winter Soldier. The new Conan from Dark Horse was quite a disappointment, though; I usually like Brian Wood’s writing but seems to me like he hasn’t been able to find Conan’s true voice as a character. And Becky Cloonan’s style was simply not the right fit for the Cimmerian. Once again, the classic comic books are much better than the current versions. Again Morning Glories and Unwritten continue to deliver the goods. And Severed ends on a high note. Strange Talent of Luther Strode was very violent and, of course, very entertaining.

Febrero es el mes más corto del año (incluso en un año bisiesto), de todos modos, una docena de cómics llegaron a mi casa justo a tiempo. Realmente disfruté leyendo Avengers Academy y el primer número de Winter Soldier. El nuevo Conan de Dark Horse fue bastante decepcionante, usualmente me gustan los guiones de Brian Wood, pero me parece que no ha sido capaz de encontrar la verdadera voz de Conan como personaje. Y el estilo de Becky Cloonan simplemente no encaja con el cimerio. Nuevamente, los cómics clásicos son muchísimo mejores que las versiones actuales. Nuevamente Morning Glories y Unwritten llegan con buenos momentos. Y Severed tiene un final tremendo. Strange Talent of Luther Strode fue muy violento y, por supuesto, muy entretenido.

I got my January comic books on record time! And I think I read them even faster. Icon is still producing some of the most interesting titles such as Brilliant and Superior, while Avatar keeps catering to the horror fans like no other publisher could… this month Caligula ends, but Ferals begins. Unwritten and Morning Glories continue to be some of my favorite ongoing series, while Luther Strode and Severed are the best Image miniseries right now. I’d like to emphasize the quality of the first issue of Whispers, a very promising title. And now, without further ado, January issues are here as per solicitations. Which one of these should I review first?



And also, a couple of panels from an old X-Factor issue. How could you not love Madrox, the Multiple Man?

I’ve frequently said that horror is one of my favorite genres, but finding true horror is often a difficult task. Horror stories should be shocking, scary and powerful. And The Theater manages to accomplish just that. I had read the first issues of Raven Gregory’s Fly, which I enjoyed tremendously. How could I not love the notion of a high school student getting high not on dope but on an addictive substance that would grant him the power of flying?

The Theater is also an example of how an original writer can shed a new light on all too familiar subjects… At the beginning of the issue, we see a young couple going to an old theater to watch a horror movie. The movie is about zombies (my favorite horror subgenre which is why I wrote a zombie story for volume 6 of The Gathering, on sale now! www.grayhavencomics.com).

Some people complain about zombies’ overexposure but I frankly couldn’t care less about those opinions. In fact, I can never get enough zombies (whether in movies or comic books). The real problem is lack of creativity when it comes to zombies. Rest assured, Raven Gregory creates a magnificent zombie saga in less than 22 pages: the living dead virus spreads throughout the world, humanity is on the brink of extinction and, suddenly, scientists find a way to eradicate the zombie plague. Now it’s time for humanity to rebuild the world. Money has no use in this new world, as no businesses or companies have survived the apocalypse. Technology has been lost… people don’t even have electricity or phone lines anymore.

Martin Montiel

In this scenario, a father and his son must readapt to this new world. They live on a farm, and slowly, very slowly, they manage to restore it just like it was before… That is, until one day, the last of the living dead surprises the unsuspecting family and, before being neutralized, bites the father. Now, the man’s destiny is clear, after surviving the zombie apocalypse he’s doomed to die and then to walk again as an insatiable creature. His son can’t kill him, they’ve been through so many experiences together that he simply can’t pull the trigger. What can they do in this desperate situation? And, at the same time, why is the theater from the first pages filled with the stench of decomposing bodies?

Honestly, I applaud Zenescope for putting out this remarkable title (and for choosing Rodin Esquejo as the cover artist). And I would like to emphasize the work of Martin Montiel & Novo Malgado, two truly talented artists. Just like in Fly, Gregory divides this comic book in two: one part is set in the theater, and has a particular art style, while the other part is the movie the guy and the girl are watching, and has a different art style. I loved the combination of styles and the almost visceral emotion conveyed in some of the pages. Really outstanding work.

He comentado con frecuencia que el terror es uno de mis géneros predilectos, pero encontrar terror de verdad es a menudo una tarea difícil. Las historias de terror deberían ser poderosas, causar impacto, y dar miedo. Y "The Theater" logra todo esto con éxito. Había leído los primeros números de "Fly" de Raven Gregory, y los disfruté mucho. ¿Cómo no me iba a fascinar la noción de un alumno de secundaria que en vez de drogarse con marihuana usaba una substancia adictiva que le confería el poder de volar?

"The Theater" nos muestra cómo un escritor original puede darle nuevos giros a temas ya conocidos... Al inicio de este número, vemos a una joven pareja entrando en un cine viejo para ver una película de terror. La cinta es sobre zombis (mi subgénero favorito y es por ello que escribí una historia de zombis para el volumen 6 de The Gathering, a la venta aquí: www.grayhavencomics.com).

Hay gente que se queja acerca de la sobreexposición de zombis, pero yo, personalmente, siempre pido más (en cómics o en películas). El verdadero problema es la falta de creatividad en relación a los zombis. Y por eso valoro el magnífico relato zombi que Raven Gregory crea en menos de 22 páginas: el virus de los muertos vivientes se expande por el mundo, la humanidad está al borde de la extinción y, repentinamente, los científicos encuentran una forma de erradicar la plaga zombi. Ahora la humanidad debe reconstruir el planeta. El dinero ya no tiene sentido en un mundo sin empresas o negocios. La tecnología ya no existe... no hay electricidad ni líneas telefónicas.

En este escenario, un padre y su hijo deben readaptarse a este nuevo mundo. Viven un una granja, y lentamente, muy lentamente, empiezan a restaurar las cosas. Hasta que un día, el último de los muertos vivientes los sorprende y, antes de ser neutralizado, muerde al padre. Ahora, el destino del hombre está claro, luego de sobrevivir al apocalipsis zombi, está condenado a morir y caminar de nuevo como una criatura insaciable. Su hijo no lo puede matar, han pasado por tantas cosas que no es capaz de jalar el gatillo. ¿Qué pueden hacer en esta situación desesperada? Y, al mismo tiempo, ¿por qué el cine de las primeras páginas guarda el hedor de cadáveres en descomposición?

Honestamente, aplaudo a Zenescope por sacar un título como este (y por elegir a Rodin Esquejo como portadista). Y me gustaría resaltar el trabajo de Martin Montiel & Novo Malgado, dos artistas de gran talento. Al igual que en "Fly", Gregory divide este cómic en dos: una parte se desarrolla en el cine, y tiene un estilo particular de dibujo, mientras que la otra parte es la película que el chico y la chica están viendo, y tiene un estilo distinto. Me encantó la combinación, y la emoción casi visceral expresada en algunas de las páginas. Un trabajo realmente de primera.

I’m also glad to see two issues of Superior in the same month, and I’m impatient to see how the series ends in the seventh and final installment of Millar’s creation. ¡Los cómics de octubre están finalmente aquí! Pero antes que nada quería agradecer a Robert Kirkman, creador de The Walking Dead por publicar mi carta (y responderme) en el número 89. Además de The Walking Dead también leí dos primeros números de Image (Last of the Greats and The Strange Talent of Luther Strode) y he quedado encantado (tanto que escribiré una reseña sobre los dos). Lo mismo se aplica a The Theater, Severed and Caligula. Por cierto, me alegra ver dos números de Superior el mismo mes, y estoy impaciente por leer el desenlace de esta serie de Millar. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de octubre:
