2020 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

Although I love all artistic expressions, the ninth art will always have a special place in my heart. Every time I get my box of comics I feel again like a wee lad in Christmas. It’s such a wonderful feeling. Even if I know exactly what I’ll find inside the box, it feels as if I were unwrapping a surprise present. So I open the box, I take out the comics. And I look at them and I smile. Yes, comics will always brighten up my day.

Every month more than 300 different titles are published in the American market, in addition to an equal amout of trade paperbacks and hardcovers. Of course, some are forgettable, but others challenge our imagination and reignite the spark of our curiosity. My purpose here is to highlight those works that have, indeed, inspired me. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the 10th annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

We all experience feelings, and we can sure remember the most intense ones. But can we make others experience anything similar to what we hold dear in our memories? I think only extraordinary writers are capable of doing that. And when we read their stories something inside of us is awakened. There are 3 excellent writers on my 2020 list: Christopher Cantwell for his intense and inspiring “Doctor Doom”, Tom King for his rather complex and compelling “Strange Adventures” and Barbara Randall Kesel for her touching “Avengers: Marvels Snapshots”.

I grew up surrounded by art, and that has helped me identity the true masters of pencil & inks. Of course, learning to draw has become very useful when I have to judge the artistic skills of others. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months and I think a reward is only fair: Ryan Sook for his vibrant and dynamic take on “Legion of Super-Heroes”, Alex Ross for his remarkable painted art in “Marvel” and Jerry Ordway for his classic style and balanced compositions in “Sub-Mariner: Marvels Snapshots”.

The sacred duty of a cover is simple: it has to be aesthetically superior to all other covers. The first thing we look at when holding a comic is the cover, and it has to be catchy, it has to be gorgeous. It isn’t easy to come across great covers on a monthly basis, but some artists have pleasantly surprised me with their output: Alex Ross for his unique and unforgettable covers on “Marvel”, “Marvels X” and “Marvels Snapshots”; Ryan Sook for his amazing covers for “Legion of Super-Heroes”; and Jay Anacleto, with his scary and realistic covers for “The Dollhouse”.

Some fans don’t pay attention to editors, but they work 24/7 to provide us with the best possible comics. In this case the award goes to Daniel Chabon (Dark Horse Comics) for putting together the superb collection of Gaiman comics in “The Neil Gaiman Library Vol. 1”.

After reading so many comics this year, it became really difficult to decide which one was the best. So I’ve considered only those published in 2020. So the 2020 Arion’s Achievement Award for Best Single Issue goes to Strange Adventures # 1, a fascinating first issue with very human characters and complex moral dilemmas.

Doctor Doom” is the best ongoing series of the year. Christopher Cantwell's new Marvel series is both innovative and introspective. Cantwell reminds us why Doctor Doom is the most fascinating villain ever created.
Salvador Larroca

There have been many wonderful miniseries like Marvels Snapshots, Marvels X, Punisher Soviet or Alienated but the prize goes to The Boys: Dear Becky, an honest exploration of life a decade after the ending of the main The Boys series.

When I started with my nominations for New Series I immediately realized how many amazing first issues I had read. I loved Marvel, Scumbag, Norse Mythology and Tartarus, but this award cannot be shared. So the one and only Best New Series is Strange Adventures

Superman: The Man of Steel Vol. 1 deserves as many praises as possible. It certainly is the Best Archival Collection / Reprint I bought this year. DC is finally treating John Byrne's Superman with due respect

In addition to “Dear Becky”, Dynamite Entertainment is publishing an amazing selection of titles even beyond The Boys miniseries, so it deserves to be the best publisher of 2020.

There are many interesting and informative websites about comics, but only a few are as fun as ComicsBeat.com I’m always delighted by the good articles I can find there.

In 2020 we say goodbye to several prominent creators, more than ever before: Quino a truly giant in the field, and famous in all Spanish speaking countries, this Argentinian cartoonist combined wisdom with a good sense of humor in ways that are as meaningful and surprising today as they were decades ago; Albert Uderzo co-creator of Asterix was arguably one of the most famous artists in the medium, and his work has been admired and revered by generations of readers all over the world; Juan Giménez is one of the most talented artists from Argentina and a fantastic illustrator, whose unparalleled talent and knack for sci-fi and fantasy scenarios made him the perfect collaborator for writers like Jodorowsky; editor and writer Dennis O’Neil is another industry legend famous for redefining Batman and creating some of the most popular characters in the Batman universe. In the 70s and 80s there was no one more famous than Richard Corben, his hyper-realistic style and his painting techniques quickly turned him into an extremely popular creator. We should also remember fan-favorite writers like Martin Pasko and inkers like Joe Sinnott, who worked for decades for DC and Marvel respectively.

And thus 2020 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.

I bid thee farewell and long live the ninth art!

Superman: The Man of Steel Vol. 1 merece tantos elogios como sea posible.
