The Highest House # 1 - 3 - Mike Carey & Peter Gross

In a world not much different from ours, in a time not unlike our Middle Age, a boy named Moth is separated from his family. He is, in fact, sold as a slave. But what nobody knows is that he is different, he is unlike all other boys, he is unique in a way that may change the course of the future. Nobody knows that, not even Moth himself, and what he’ll experience in the first chapter of Higher House (published in February 2018) is the painful experience of being sold by his own mother in exchange for a couple of coins.

Magister Extat is in charge of buying slaves, and like Moth, he is a man of special talents and abilities. In his own way, Magister Extat considers he’s helping Moth, and soon he takes the boy under his wing and explains him what Highest House is: “In the old days, before the Koviki came, Ossaniul had a thousand gods and a single king. Now there is only one ruler in heaven but three hundred families in the Room of Rule. Aldercrest is one of the greatest families, and Highest House is their dwelling”.

Once they’re in Highest House, Moth is coveted by several masters, one of them is master Temtoller, who feels attracted to the boy, however in the end it’ll be Fless, a slave in charge of repairing roofs, who will take Moth as her apprentice. Even if his mistress is a kind and patient woman, Moth still has a pretty rough time adjusting to the life of a slave.

While Moth diligently works as Tess’ apprentice, he still keeps in touch with Magister Extat, whose supernatural abilities place him far above all men, except his master, Lord Demini, maximum authority of the Higher Hourse and leader of the Aldercrest clan. After participating in a ritual that demands Moth’s blood, the boy asks if what he was witnessed has anything to do with magic. “Of course it is. All human thought is magic” replies Magister Extat. And certainly magic will be an important component of The Highest House. In fact, Moth makes a pact with a mystical entity that will save his life on more than one occasion.

However, even mystical protection is not enough to save Moth from the intentions of master Temtoller, who brutally beats the boy and proceeds to rape him. But as a slave, Moth is also a survivor, and in time his wounds start to heal and he forgets about master Temtoller. Eventually he falls in love with Lady Shurubai, the daughter of Lord Demini, and when he saves her life one day, Lord Demini decides to reward him by employing him as his personal messenger. For Moth, life is now much better than when he was in the lowest ranks of the house, but he doesn’t know that clan Aldercrest is preparing for a battle with some of the oldest and mightiest clans of the realm.

Blinded by love, Moth can only think of Lady Shurubai, but he also understands that she’s forced to marry Vistin Carrow, who will provide clan Aldercrest with a fleet. In the end, nothing has changed for Moth. He’s still a slave, and he has no right to aspire to the love of Lady Shurubai. And yet that is precisely what he does. And surprisingly Lady Shurubai has no interest in Carrow, her future husband; in fact, she has no interest in men at all, as Moth finds out when he unexpectedly sees the lady and her chambermaid laying naked in bed.
Moth and other slaves / Moth y otros esclavos
In only 3 issues, Mike Carey builds a rich and fascinating universe, and he does that with the help of Peter Gross and Yuko Shimizu. They had previously worked together on The Unwritten, one of the best Vertigo series of the past decade. And here Peter Gross’ art is absolutely amazing, depurated to a level of sophistication that adds incredibly complexity to this realm of fighting clans and black magic. Of course, Shimizu’s covers are very beautiful, and have a unique sense of design.

Master Temtoller tries to rape Moth / el maestro Temtoller intenta violar a Moth

Lady Shurubai and her maid / la dama Shurubai y su doncella
