November Comics / cómics de noviembre

Due to high international shipping costs and a reduced budget, this might be the last time I get a monthly package of comics (at least until I get a better job next year). In November half of my comics were Marvel and half were DC, unlike previous months when the majority were DC. Absolute Batman was brilliant, especially issue 15. Absolute Flash was quite good. The first issue of Hulk Smash Everything was promising. I did enjoy Wiccan Witches Road quite a bit. Fantastic Four remains as one of my favorites. And the conclusion of One World Under Doom was extraordinary (Ryan North is an amazing writer). It was difficult to choose my favorite comic this month, but I’d say it was Batman / Deadpool, not only for Grant Morrison’s incredibly funny main story with the Dark Knight and the Merc with a Mouth, but also all the other stories involving such unique pairings as John Constantine and Doctor Strange. And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

Debido a los altos costos de envíos internacionales y a un presupuesto reducido, esta podría ser la última vez que reciba un paquete mensual de cómics (al menos hasta que consiga un mejor trabajo el año que viene). En noviembre, la mitad de mis cómics fueron de Marvel y la otra mitad de DC, a diferencia de meses anteriores, en los que la mayoría fueron de DC. After a quick trip to Portugal and Spain, I returned to Dublin just in time for Halloween… and in time to read a few more comics, such as Fantastic Four, fantastically written and, of course, my favorite issue of the month, One World Under Doom #8. Ryan North is such a talented writer! And now, without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN TORN #2

September Comics / cómics de setiembre

To celebrate the beginning of the fall semester I decided to read a truly wonderful selection of comics. Let’s start Skinbreaker #1, with absolutely impressive art by David Finch; another comic with beautiful art is Dust to Dust, JG Jones amazes me with every page. The third issue of Superman the Kryptonite Spectrum was considerably better than the previous ones, and the fourth issue was even better! Absolute Superman, Absolute Batman and Absolute Flash are always great! I really liked the conclusion of Batman Dark Patterns, as well as the final issue of Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton. Everything Dead and Dying #1 was a captivating first issue. The Batman / Deadpool crossover was quite a treat, a really fun comic and the first Marvel / DC collaboration in over 2 decades (also the backup stories here were absolutely delightful). The best comic of the month is Fantastic Four #3. And now, without further ado, here are September comics as per solicitations.

Para celebrar el inicio del semestre de otoño, decidí leer una selección de cómics realmente maravillosa. Empecemos con Skinbreaker #1, con un arte absolutamente impresionante de David Finch; otro cómic con un arte precioso es Dust to Dust, JG Jones me sorprende con cada página. El tercer número de Superman the Kryptonite Spectrum fue considerablemente mejor que los anteriores, ¡y el cuarto fue incluso mejor! ¡Absolute Superman, Absolute Batman y Absolute Flash siempre son geniales! Me gustó mucho la conclusión de Batman Dark Patterns, así como el número final de Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton. Everything Dead and Dying #1 fue un primer número cautivador. July & August Comics

This package of comics was successfully delivered to Ireland! I think Superman the Kryptonite Spectrum is quite a promising miniseries. I continue to enjoy Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton (that’s a sentence I never imagined I would end up writing!). Of course Batman Dark Patterns is as good as ever. DC’s absolute line is amazing. Absolute Flash is captivating, Absolute Superman is one of the most exciting Superman reinterpretations in recent years, and Absolute Batman has been absolutely outstanding. Fantastic Four # 2 was fascinating. And One World Under Doom is definitely the best superhero crossover of the decade and Ryan North really surprises me with each issue. Finally, my favorite comic of the month is Absolute Batman #10. And now, without further ado, here are July & August comics as per solicitations:

After 4 months in Dublin, I’ve only managed to go to the movies once: One Battle After Another (2025), inspired by Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, is director Paul Thomas Anderson’s return to greatness! A unique, highly original, sophisticated and unpredictable film that is as chameleonic as it is charming, blending different genres and subverting expectations almost on every scene. Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood) is absolutely brilliant here, we see his life as a rebel, as an insurgent, as a man willing to sacrifice everything for a dream, he works with Teyana Taylor and other covert operatives who try to bring justice by attacking US government facilities, including the one in charge of Colonel Sean Penn (The Gunman). When Teyana Taylor gets pregnant, everything changes, including the relationship with the protagonist. 16 years later Chase Infiniti is a teenage girl living with his dad, Leonardo DiCaprio, who is no longer a shrewd, skillful and efficient conspirator but rather a burned out man, out of shape, out of confidence, out of money and addicted to weed. After 16 years, the Colonel starts looking for both, father and daughter, upending their lives. Trying to find his way back to the resistance, the protagonist gets lost only to be found (and assisted) by Benicio Del Toro (The French Dispatch). Meanwhile, Chase Infiniti embarks on a challenging journey that will forever change her life. Top notch acting, unflinching humanity, brutal honesty, an outstanding plot coupled with a fascinating exercise in filmmaking techniques that could only be carried out by a true master, One Battle After Another is, without a doubt, one of the best films of 2025.

While still in Peru I did go to the movies more than once, and I watched Superman (2025), directed by James Gunn. A very compelling take on the greatest superhero of all. Gunn rescues a level of humanity and vulnerability in Superman that is almost unprecedented, while conserving the sense of awe and the allure of power inherent in the Man of Steel. David Corenswet plays Clark Kent and Superman, creating a multilayered character that is starting a relationship with Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan. Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) is magnificent as Lex Luthor, and I think Skyler Gisondo (Vacation) is a great choice for Jimmy Olsen. I loved to see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and it was wonderful to see other members of the Justice League such as Mr. Terrific and Hawkgirl. Of course there are other characters from the comic showing up here, but as much as I would like to talk about each one of them, I think it’s necessary to say that Gunn’s take on Superman succeeds, not only because it provides endless adventure, well-delivered humor and dramatic heroes versus villains confrontations, but also because it ultimately reminds us that Superman represents hope and, above all, a moral compass that is lacking in today’s world. 

Matt Shakman’s Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) was definitely the best Marvel movie I’ve seen in years! Marvel’s premier superhero family deserved so much better than what we saw in previous iterations. This time, Pedro Pascal (Gladiator II) plays the world’s most intelligent man, Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic, while Vanessa Kirby (Napoleon) plays the role of Susan Storm AKA Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach is Ben Grimm AKA the Thing and at last but not least Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One) is Johnny Storm AKA the Human Torch. The movie takes place in alternate reality, in the 60s, where the Fantastic Four have become the world’s greatest (and only) superhero team. At a time of peace and prosperity, when Sue Storm is waiting to become a mother, the Silver Surfer announces the unavoidable future: Galactus, the devourer of worlds, will soon destroy Earth, annihilating all life in the process. Facing the greatest challenge of their lives, just as it was in the original comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four must do everything in their power to save the world… but at what cost? Every character plays an essential role here, and there are many impressive moments. As a long time FF fan, I’m glad to say I finally watched a movie worthy of its creators (Lee & Kirby). Excelsior!

 

Julius Onah’s Captain America: Brave New World (2025) has some interesting moments although it also feels to restrained at points. Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Civil War) returns this time not as the Falcon but as the new Captain America, with his own sidekick Danny Ramirez. Harrison Ford (Star Wars: the Force Awakens) plays general Ross, who will eventually turn into the Red Hulk. The cast includes great actors, such as Giancarlo Esposito and Liv Tyler (The Leftovers). I would say there were some good ideas here but not all of them seem to be well developed. Additionally, there are a few weak moments plot wise and the overall pacing and tonality of the movie seems to have more internal contradictions than anything else.

Captain America: Brave New World (2025), de Julius Onah, tiene algunos momentos interesantes, aunque también se siente algo restringida en otros momentos. June comics / cómics de junio

The entire month of June I was traveling around Europe and having an amazing time. So with a 2 month delay, I finally had a chance to read June’s comics. As I’ve said before, I’m surprised with DC and with Absolute Flash, Absolute Batman and Absolute Superman (consistently some of the best comics I read every month, all three of them). Action Comics was nice. The beginning of a new saga in Batman Dark Patterns is quite promising, and the first issue of Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton is off to a good start. Except for one, all the stories in Marvel United A Pride Special were disappointing. Bug Wars has been great so far. I enjoyed Hulk & Dr Strange. Ryan North continues to excel with One World Under Doom and the new Fantastic Four series. It’s no surprise that my favorite comic of the month is North’s Fantastic Four # 33. And now without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations:

Todo el mes de junio estuve viajando por Europa y lo pasé genial. Así que, con dos meses de retraso, por fin tuve la oportunidad de leer los cómics de junio. Como ya he dicho, DC me está sorprendiendo con Absolute Flash, Absolute Batman y Absolute Superman (los tres son siempre de los mejores cómics que leo cada mes). Action Comics estuvo bien. El comienzo de una nueva saga en Batman Dark Patterns es bastante prometedor, y el primer número de Krypto, el Último Perro de Kriptón, ha empezado con buen pie. A excepción de una historia, todas las demás en Marvel United A Pride Special fueron decepcionantes. Bug Wars ha sido genial hasta ahora. Disfruté de Hulk & Dr Strange. Ryan North sigue impresionando con One World Under Doom y la nueva serie de Fantastic Four. No es de extrañar que mi cómic favorito del mes sea Fantastic Four #33 de North.
