After 4 months in Dublin, I’ve only managed to go to the movies once: One Battle After Another (2025), inspired by Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, is director Paul Thomas Anderson’s return to greatness! A unique, highly original, sophisticated and unpredictable film that is as chameleonic as it is charming, blending different genres and subverting expectations almost on every scene. Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood) is absolutely brilliant here, we see his life as a rebel, as an insurgent, as a man willing to sacrifice everything for a dream, he works with Teyana Taylor and other covert operatives who try to bring justice by attacking US government facilities, including the one in charge of Colonel Sean Penn (The Gunman). When Teyana Taylor gets pregnant, everything changes, including the relationship with the protagonist. 16 years later Chase Infiniti is a teenage girl living with his dad, Leonardo DiCaprio, who is no longer a shrewd, skillful and efficient conspirator but rather a burned out man, out of shape, out of confidence, out of money and addicted to weed. After 16 years, the Colonel starts looking for both, father and daughter, upending their lives. Trying to find his way back to the resistance, the protagonist gets lost only to be found (and assisted) by Benicio Del Toro (The French Dispatch). Meanwhile, Chase Infiniti embarks on a challenging journey that will forever change her life. Top notch acting, unflinching humanity, brutal honesty, an outstanding plot coupled with a fascinating exercise in filmmaking techniques that could only be carried out by a true master, One Battle After Another is, without a doubt, one of the best films of 2025.
While still in Peru I did go to the movies more than once, and I watched Superman (2025), directed by James Gunn. A very compelling take on the greatest superhero of all. Gunn rescues a level of humanity and vulnerability in Superman that is almost unprecedented, while conserving the sense of awe and the allure of power inherent in the Man of Steel. David Corenswet plays Clark Kent and Superman, creating a multilayered character that is starting a relationship with Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan. Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) is magnificent as Lex Luthor, and I think Skyler Gisondo (Vacation) is a great choice for Jimmy Olsen. I loved to see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and it was wonderful to see other members of the Justice League such as Mr. Terrific and Hawkgirl. Of course there are other characters from the comic showing up here, but as much as I would like to talk about each one of them, I think it’s necessary to say that Gunn’s take on Superman succeeds, not only because it provides endless adventure, well-delivered humor and dramatic heroes versus villains confrontations, but also because it ultimately reminds us that Superman represents hope and, above all, a moral compass that is lacking in today’s world.
Matt Shakman’s Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) was definitely the best Marvel movie I’ve seen in years! Marvel’s premier superhero family deserved so much better than what we saw in previous iterations. This time, Pedro Pascal (Gladiator II) plays the world’s most intelligent man, Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic, while Vanessa Kirby (Napoleon) plays the role of Susan Storm AKA Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach is Ben Grimm AKA the Thing and at last but not least Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One) is Johnny Storm AKA the Human Torch. The movie takes place in alternate reality, in the 60s, where the Fantastic Four have become the world’s greatest (and only) superhero team. At a time of peace and prosperity, when Sue Storm is waiting to become a mother, the Silver Surfer announces the unavoidable future: Galactus, the devourer of worlds, will soon destroy Earth, annihilating all life in the process. Facing the greatest challenge of their lives, just as it was in the original comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four must do everything in their power to save the world… but at what cost? Every character plays an essential role here, and there are many impressive moments. As a long time FF fan, I’m glad to say I finally watched a movie worthy of its creators (Lee & Kirby). Excelsior!
Julius Onah’s Captain America: Brave New World (2025) has some interesting moments although it also feels to restrained at points. Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Civil War) returns this time not as the Falcon but as the new Captain America, with his own sidekick Danny Ramirez. Harrison Ford (Star Wars: the Force Awakens) plays general Ross, who will eventually turn into the Red Hulk. The cast includes great actors, such as Giancarlo Esposito and Liv Tyler (The Leftovers). I would say there were some good ideas here but not all of them seem to be well developed. Additionally, there are a few weak moments plot wise and the overall pacing and tonality of the movie seems to have more internal contradictions than anything else.

Actuaciones de primera, humanidad inquebrantable, honestidad brutal, una trama excepcional, junto con un fascinante ejercicio de técnicas cinematográficas que sólo un verdadero maestro podría llevar a cabo, One Battle After Another es, sin duda, una de las mejores películas del 2025.
