We started 2022 with only a handful of comics, but all really good. The first issue of Arrowsmith exceeded my expectations, great story and great art. Eternals continues to surprise me. As usual I enjoyed reading trade paperbacks from previous years. And my favorite comic of the month was Tom King’s Human Target #3. And now without further ado here are January comics as per solicitations:
ARROWSMITH #1
(W) Kurt Busiek (A/CA) Carlos Pacheco & Various. SERIES PREMIERE The new KURT BUSIEK era at Image begins here, as he and superstar artist CARLOS PACHECO (Fantastic Four, Avengers Forever, Final Crisis, X-Men, Superman) bring you the much-anticipated return of ARROWSMITH! It's World War I-but a war of wizards and dragons as much as bullets and barbed wire. Young airman Fletcher Arrowsmith plunges back into the heat of war-and finds himself behind enemy lines, facing a threat that could doom the Allied Powers. The first issue in a new ARROWSMITH-universe miniseries! And don't miss the remastered hardcover of the original series in February!
BLUE FLAME #6
(W) Christopher Cantwell (A/CA) Adam Gorham. Sam Brausam is hitting rock bottom. He thought he could trust the journalist he's been dating with his biggest secret - that he's fighting for the fate of humanity in a cosmic trial - but she seems intent on exposing him as a fraud in dire need of help. On Exilos, the Blue Flame brings forth his Night Brigade companions as virtuous examples of humanity's best, but the prosecutor is ready to share some darker truths about them.
CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE TP (MR)
Writer Garth Ennis returns to the chronicles of Danny Wormwood, a shifty yet sympathetic television executive who also happens to be the Antichrist. Having averted his devilish father's plans for an all-out apocalypse by eliminating God and the Devil, Danny has started to get his life back together - reuniting with his girlfriend Maggie and drinking beers with humbled messiah Jay and Jimmy the Talking Rabbit. But having rid Hell of its rightful lord, he now must face an even worse successor - the fallen, corrupt Pope Jacko! Ennis, the critically acclaimed creator of PREACHER and CROSSED, drags the whole world into the gutter with his trademark razor-sharp dialogue and biting wit, alongside the stunning artwork by collaborator Oscar Jimenez. Available in softcover and hardcover formats, with illustrated covers by Oscar Jimenez.
DREADFUL BEAUTY ART OF PROVIDENCE TP (MR)
The amazing work of Jacen Burrows is celebrated in this special art book! Over 15 years of amazing works are featured here, all showcasing Burrows' original pencils and inks. Included is a complete cover gallery, from The Courtyard to Neonomicon to Providence, as well as choice pages, designs and lots of unused, ultra-rare, and unseen art! For fans of the series, this is a wonderful companion volume showcasing the haunting artwork and painstaking labor that went into bringing it to life.
ETERNALS #9
(W) Kieron Gillen (A/CA) Esad Ribic. It is Eternal indoctrination to eliminate excess deviation. But can our small group of Eternals overcome such programming when living in a city of Deviants? We're about to find out as, for the first time ever, Eternals fight for Deviantkind. RATED T+
HUMAN TARGET #3
(W) Tom King (A/CA) Greg Smallwood. Christopher Chance is a man on a deadline and working to solve a crime that might be unsolvable. Despite his better judgment, he’s falling for his lead suspect, and her violent ex-boyfriend isn’t happy about it. Oh, and that ex? He’s a Green Lantern.
