Legends of the Dark Knight Annual # 1 - O’Neil, Aparo, Giffen, Quesada et al

When Legends of the Dark Knight was originally released it was announced as the first new Batman ongoing title since the 40s. To celebrate such a momentous occasion we had legendary writer Denny O’Neil and his Shaman arc. The first year of Legends of the Dark Knight was incredible in terms of quality but also in terms of talent: Grant Morrison wrote Gothic and then Doug Moench wrote Prey. Of course, as it is a tradition with monthly ongoing titles there would be more than one opportunity for a Legends of the Dark Knight annual. 

Mike Mignola

The first annual was published in 1991 and titled “Duel”. It presents a very unique story about Batman that is, more than anything else, an oneiric journey through the most unexpected landscapes that one could think of. If it is true that often Batman stories have been set in realistic, urban environments, then it is also true that the character has the potential to thrive in very different scenarios, and that is what we can see in this amazing annual which also combines the talents of some of the most famous artists in the comic book industry.

The opening a splash page is by none other than Jim Aparo, another legendary Batman artist who has been famous for his work on the character throughout the decades. This Magnificent composition gives us a dark silhouette, the Dark Knight himself, while trying to walk across the snow. Even if Batman is a character that can only exist at night he still looks like the superhero we all know in this very unusual setting. 

Can Batman survive in the snow? This seems to be the first question that the readers will be asking but there is much more to come because Keith Giffen and Malcolm Jones III take Batman to hell, making him fight against demons while trying to carry a burden which can also be seen in the previous sequence. Batman will be carrying this burden, this strange luggage that sometimes seems to change depending on the context, he might be unsure as of why he needs to keep carrying it but he never lets go of it, and he constantly comes back to it. Keith Giffen was famous for his work in the Legion of Super-Heroes and what is especially interesting as finding somebody like Malcolm Jones III inking the work of a man who has become synonym with the superheroes of the 31st century.

There is a very impressive sequence in which Batman fights against an evil lady in charge of a mysterious castle, the vibrant and dynamic art is by Joe Quesada, who at the time was working for DC Comics. This, of course, happened almost 20 years before he became the editor-in-chief at Marvel Comics. Joe Rubinstein, veteran inker, is also working here with Quesada and does a great job. One of my favorite sequences is the one that takes place in Washington DC, another city that is foreign to Gotham's most popular superhero; here we can see a flying saucer overflying the capital of the United States. And of course we get to see Batman fighting against the alien inside the extraterrestrial spaceship. The art is by Tom Lyle, who did an amazing work on Robin in the early 90s, and the inks are by Ty Templeton, who was also extremely popular at the time. 

Keith Giffen & Malcolm Jones III

Of course, there are also time displacements and so we get to see Batman fighting against the mafia in 1930. The art is by Dan Spiegle. Perhaps the craziest moment takes place when Batman must confront Nazi soldiers who are commanded by the führer himself, Adolf Hitler; of course, as any reader might guess, none of this would be possible in an in-continuity the story which means that there is something else going on here. James Blackburn and Michael Golden are in charge of illustrating these last pages. And of course no one could overlook Mike Mignola’s striking cover! I think Denny O’Neil does a great job by combining all this seemingly unrelated plot threads into one solid and entertaining story that truly lives up to the fantastic first year of Legends Of The Dark Knight.

Incluso si Batman es un personaje que sólo puede existir en la noche, de todos modos se ve como el superhéroe que todos conocemos aunque en este entorno tan inusual.

¿Puede Batman sobrevivir en la nieve? Esta parece ser la primera pregunta que harán los lectores, pero hay mucho más por venir porque Keith Giffen y Malcolm Jones III llevan a Batman al infierno, haciéndolo luchar contra los demonios mientras intenta llevar una carga que también se puede ver en la secuencia previa. Batman llevará esta carga, este extraño equipaje que a veces parece cambiar según el contexto, él no está seguro de por qué necesita seguir cargando aquello pero nunca lo suelta, y constantemente regresa a él. December comic books / cómics de diciembre

If I had to choose the best comic of November and December it would be a tie between the truly fantastic FF # 1 and the absolutely awesome Witch Doctor Mal Practice # 1. FF was surprisingly good, and Witch Doctor was just as great as the original miniseries. Last year I was buying Witch Doctor, Luther Strode and Caligula, and they have all returned at the same time. Ouch, I can’t even begin to imagine what this will do to my budget. I really enjoyed reading the new beginnings for Luther Strode and Caligula, and I’ll review them. Finally, Masks # 1 had a great script and great art, easily the most promising miniseries that has come from Dynamite in years. And now, without further ado, here are December’s comics as per solicitations. Which ones of these have grabbed your attention?

AMERICA'S GOT POWERS #4 (OF 6)

Si tuviera que elegir el mejor cómic de noviembre y diciembre habría un empate entre el fantástico FF # 1 y el asombroso  Witch Doctor Mal Practice # 1. FF fue tan bueno que me sorprendió, y  Witch Doctor estuvo tan genial como la miniserie original. El año pasado estaba comprando Witch Doctor, Luther Strode y Caligula, y ahora todas han regresado al mismo tiempo. Uf, no puedo ni imaginar los efectos que tendrá esto sobre mi presupuesto. Realmente disfruté leyendo los nuevos comienzos de  Luther Strode y Caligula, y serán reseñados. Por último, Masks # 1 tuvo un gran argumento y gran arte, se trata de la miniserie más prometedroa que de Dynamite en años. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de diciembre. ¿Cuáles son los que más te llaman la atención?
