3,000,000 Visits and New Comics!

2020 has been a year that will not be easily forgotten. At the beginning of March I was happily sharing with you the good news of reaching 1,000 posts and only a week later, my good friend and fantasy writer Mario Buenaventura (author of El guardián) was telling me that our lives was about to change completely. Due to his unexpected and random connection with high ranking military personnel, he found out that it had been rumored that there would be a complete lockdown in San Francisco and probably the rest of the Bay Area. 

Up to that point, despite the numerous alarms and threatening news, our lives in the small town of Davis, California, were absolutely normal but that was about to change drastically. It was Mario’s warning that allowed to come up with a plan and relocate temporarily to West Sacramento. 2 days after I arrived to West Sacramento, the lockdown in the Central Valley was officially announced. I’ll always be thankful to Mario for letting me know almost a week in advance what would happen even if, and that’s completely my fault, going to West Sacramento wasn’t the best decision in the end. 

As much as I have hated quarantine, I must say that I have probably read more this year than in previous ones. And comic books can certainly make for an excellent form of escapism especially in times like this, in which reality is uglier than usual. Even with the coronavirus vaccine, it will take months for things to get back to normal, but at least we will always have dozens or hundreds of comics to read. 

In any case, now we have surpassed 3 million visits which is quite a bit, even though it took a decade to get to that point. So in a way this is a post to commemorate those 3 million visits but also to announce that in addition to Dead Wrong (2019) my new comic book, Dawn of the Undead # 2 (2020), will soon be available on Comixology. So stay tuned for updates! The best is yet to come!

El 2020 ha sido un año que no olvidaremos fácilmente. A principios de marzo estaba felizmente compartiendo con ustedes la buena noticia de llegar a los 1,000 posts y apenas una semana después, mi buen amigo y escritor de fantasía Mario Buenaventura (autor de El guardián) me decía que nuestras vidas estaban a punto de cambiar por completo. Debido a su conexión inesperada y aleatoria con personal militar de alto rango, se enteró de que se rumoreaba que habría una cuarentena total en San Francisco y probablemente en el resto del Bay Area.

Hasta ese momento, a pesar de las numerosas alarmas y noticias amenazadoras, nuestras vidas en la pequeña ciudad de Davis, California, era absolutamente normales pero eso estaba a punto de cambiar drásticamente. Fue la advertencia de Mario lo que permitió idear un plan y trasladarme temporalmente a West Sacramento. Dos días después de mi llegada a West Sacramento, se anunció oficialmente la cuarentena en el Central Valley. Siempre estaré agradecido con Mario por hacerme saber casi con una semana de anticipación lo que sucedería incluso si, y eso es completamente mi culpa, ir a West Sacramento no fue la mejor decisión al final.

Por mucho que haya odiado la cuarentena, debo decir que probablemente he leído más este año que en los anteriores. Y los cómics ciertamente pueden ser una excelente forma de escapismo, especialmente en momentos como este, en los que la realidad es más desagradable de lo habitual. Incluso con la vacuna para el coronavirus, las cosas tardarán meses en volver a la normalidad, pero al menos siempre tendremos decenas o cientos de cómics para leer.

En cualquier caso, ahora hemos superado los 3 millones de visitas que nos es poca monta, aunque hemos tardado una década en llegar a ese punto. Entonces, de alguna manera, este es un post para conmemorar esos 3 millones de visitas, pero también para anunciar que, además de Dead Wrong (2019), mi nuevo cómic, Dawn of the Undead # 2 (2020), pronto estará disponible en Comixology. ¡Así que estad atentos a las actualizaciones! 1,000 Posts

2’941,253 visits, more than 2,500 comments posted, 464 followers. And 1,000 posts! In 2012 I had a similar post celebrating our 300th anniversary and now, lo and behold, mere 8 years later we went from 300 to 1,000. Over the past 8 years the blog has changed a lot. In 2012 I used used to have an average of 15 posts per month, which was quite a lot, but it kept things interesting for readers, I guess. In 2013 the amount decreased slightly, and in 2014 and 2015 I reorganized everything so that I could have 8 or 9 posts per month. Coincidentally, 2014 was incredibly successful in terms of readership, and I reached over 100,000 monthly visits on multiple occasions, and to be more specific, I had an impressive record-breaking amount of visits in October 2014: 217,677 in just 31 days. 

In 2015, one of the Hollywood producers mentioned in my article “Days of Scandals Past” sent a cease and desist letter, threatening with an accusation of libel unless the article was taken down. Those who collaborated in that article refused to do so, and the blog kept receiving menacing messages informing that unless we removed his name we would be subject to severe legal consequences. Still we refused to do so. And we must thank Andreé Ferro for his legal advice (it always pays off to be friends with a lawyer). We would have probably forgotten about the whole situation, if it weren’t for the fact that the blog started to get blacklisted on search engines, and many readers reached out to us to tell us that they got a warning on their browsers telling them that our blog had a malicious software (and I guess that proves that if you’re an important Hollywood producer you do have some level of power that not everyone has). As a result, readership plummeted to 80,000 and then 60,000 readers per month, and then it was much less than that. The disappearance of all comic book message boards was also a devastating blow and I’d say the blog never really recovered after that.

Days of Scandals Past

For many years, the blog run completely based on the profits that I used to get from Project Wonderful, by far the best online advertising company I’ve had the pleasure to work with since the creation of this blog in 2010. I’ve tried dozens of other alternatives and I’m not exaggerating if I say I was making, at the most, a nickel per month with those. Project Wonderful, on the other hand, was incredibly profitable compared to everything else, and those months in which readership went through the roof I actually made good money. In 2016, after moving to Milwaukee, I didn’t have enough time to post 8 times per month, so I reduced it by half, which has been the model for the past 4 years basically. But even when I had only 3 posts in a month, I could always count on getting at least a couple of dollars from Project Wonderful. Of course, all good things must come to an end, and in August 2018 Project Wonderful filed for bankruptcy, faithful to their customers, they made sure to send out all payments before the end. So after I got my last dollars from them in my PayPal account that really felt like the end of an era. Since that moment I have decided it’s futile to try to make money with other online advertising companies and now the blog runs 100% free of ads. Of course, that means I make 0 dollars per month with it, but I think that’s fine, when I started it 10 years ago I had no idea it would last that long, and I never thought I would ever make a profit out of it. But in any case seems like pretty soon we’ll be celebrating 3 million visits. Quite impressive, isn’t it?

El 2012 escribí un post similar celebrando nuestro aniversario  300 y ahora, he aquí, sólo 8 años después, pasamos de 300 a 1,000. En los últimos 8 años, el blog ha cambiado mucho. En el 2012, solía tener un promedio de 15 publicaciones por mes, lo cual era bastante, pero supongo que eso hacía que las cosas fuesen interesantes para los lectores. En el 2013, la cantidad disminuyó ligeramente, y el 2014 y 2015 reorganicé todo para poder tener 8 o 9 posts por mes. Casualmente, el 2014 fue increíblemente exitoso en términos de lectores, y llegué a más de 100,000 visitas mensuales en múltiples ocasiones, y para ser más específicos, tuve una impresionante cantidad récord de visitas en octubre del 2014: 217,677 en solamente 31 días .

El 2015, uno de los productores de Hollywood mencionados en mi artículo “Days of Scandals Past” envió una carta de queja, amenazando con una acusación por difamación a menos que se retirase el artículo. Quienes colaboraron en ese artículo se negaron a hacerlo, y seguimos recibiendo mensajes amenazantes informándonos que, a menos que quitáramos su nombre, habría graves consecuencias legales. Aún así nos negamos a hacerlo. Y debemos agradecer a Andreé Ferro por su asesoría legal (siempre es bueno tener un amigo abogado). Probablemente nos habríamos olvidado de toda la situación, si no fuera por el hecho de que el blog comenzó a aparecer en la lista negra de los motores de búsqueda, y muchos lectores se comunicaron con nosotros para decirnos que recibían una advertencia en sus navegadores diciéndoles que nuestro blog tenía un software malicioso (y supongo que eso prueba que si eres un importante productor de Hollywood tienes cierto nivel de poder que no todos tienen). Como resultado, el número de lectores se desplomó a 80,000 y luego 60,000 lectores por mes, y luego fue mucho menor que eso. La desaparición de todos los foros de cómics también fue un golpe devastador y diría que el blog nunca se recuperó realmente después de eso.

Por supuesto, todas las cosas buenas deben llegar a su fin, y en agosto de 2018 Project Wonderful se declaró en bancarrota, fieles a sus clientes, se aseguraron de enviar todos los pagos antes del final. Entonces, después de que recibí de parte de ellos mis últimos dólares en mi cuenta de PayPal, realmente sentí que era el fin de una era. Desde ese momento he decidido que es inútil intentar ganar dinero con otras compañías de publicidad en línea y ahora el blog funciona 100% sin anuncios. Por supuesto, eso significa que gano 0 dólares al mes con él, pero creo que está bien, cuando comencé hace 10 años no tenía idea de que duraría tanto tiempo, y nunca pensé que alguna vez obtendría ganancias... pero, en cualquier caso, parece que muy pronto celebraremos 3 millones de visitas. Bastante impresionante, ¿no?

Instead of talking about the comics I bought last month, I decided that it would be a good idea to share with you my latest foray into the zombie genre: Dawn of the Undead. If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead or zombie movies in general, then I’m absolutely sure you’ll enjoy it. Mamamia - Dédalo

Now that I have over 2 million visits, I thought it would be a good opportunity to share with you some of the blog’s statistics. 

The visits rate has been rather erratic in the past few months, and only now it’s finally returning to previous levels. As you can see in the following graphic (provided by Google Analytics and Blogger) some days I’ve had less than 2,000 visits and others more than 5,000… go figure. 

The following graphic, “pageviews by countries”, reveals facts that I was already aware of in the past. Last month, my blog received over 57,000 visits from the United States. Now that’s a very good sign, since most of the ads from Project Wonderful (which you’ve been seeing on my blog since March 2014) usually take into account only clicks that come from the United States. That means that the 6,000 visits that I get combining France and Germany do not amount to much when it comes to publicity earnings. It’s quite peculiar to see Russia so high up on the list of countries (I can’t imagine how they manage to read my posts, being familiar only with the Cyrillic alphabet). It’s hard to believe that I get more visits from Ukraine and Poland than from the United Kingdom. I guess in the near future I shall start reviewing more Judge Dredd and 2000AD comics (that should increase the click count from UK). Weird as it may seem, more people in India read this blog than here in Perú, my own country. How odd is that? 

There are a couple of interesting aspects in that graphic. First of all, half of my readers, myself included, use Chrome instead of Internet Explorer (which apparently is losing popularity amongst web browsers). However, Windows continues to dominate the chart with over 70%. For those of you with active blogs, would you care to check your statistics to see if they coincide with mine? I’m a bit intrigued about browsers and operating systems.

And finally, for those that are eagerly awaiting more reviews, I can say that I’ll have a very special surprise on Monday 20th (a comic written by Trillo and illustrated by Altuna, if you don’t know who they are, just google their names). On Friday 24th I should have my “monthly pull list” post ready and on Monday 27th I’ll review a Planetary issue (just like I’ve been doing for the past year or so). Hopefully, I should be able follow this chronogram to the letter. So stay tuned! The best is yet to come.

Los pasillos y salas de esta soberbia casona barranquina me hicieron recordar mis primeras visitas a Dédalo, allá por el año 2004, cuando yo todavía estaba en la universidad. Muchas cosas han cambiado con el transcurrir de los años, pero si algo se mantiene incólume es esa sensación de calor hogareño que persiste gracias a la hospitalidad de María Elena Fernández y Eduardo Lores, a quienes saludé apenas llegué.

En esta ocasión, me quedé conversando un buen rato con Sebastián Lores, que estudió literatura conmigo en la PUCP, y con Pedro Casusol, a quien conocí precisamente en el jardín de Dédalo hace ya 3 años. Por supuesto, también pasé un rato agradable con Mónica Cuba e Isabelle Decenciere (ambas artistas habituales de Dédalo que han deleitado al público con muestras como “Pájaros en la cabeza”).

Como siempre fue un gusto encontrarme con Pablo Alayza, aunque quizás la mayor sorpresa fue coincidir con Marcos Palacios y Paola Tejada, a quienes no veía desde hacía casi un año. Marcos está preparando una nueva muestra para el 10 de junio en Euroidiomas, la última vez que vi obras suyas fue en el 2013 en la muestra “Héroes”.

Asimismo, también me enteré de que mi gran amigo Renzo Núñez Melgar-Vega inaugurará una muestra en el Centro Colich el 9 de julio. Renzo, más conocido como REVE, es un magnífico artista plástico que ha presentado muestras imprescindibles como “Un día en la vida” y “Lima Rock City”.

Pájaros en la cabeza - Mónica Cuba & Isabelle Decencière

I started this blog a long time ago, or at least that’s how it feels to me. It’s hard to remember what was going on in my life in 2010 when I started posting my drawings here, and getting less than a thousand visitors a month. Today, any day actually, I get at least 2,000 visits, which translates to 60,000 visits a month.

I guess I’ve learned a few things about Search Engine Optimization, key words, digital ads and so on. 2014 has been the best year for this blog, not only because visits have increased considerably, but also because for the first time in my life I’m actually making money with this. Granted, it’s only a couple of bucks a month, but still that’s so much better than zero cents.

Certainly, I thank you –all of you– for your continuous support. Without you, the reader, this blog would have disappeared a long time ago. In recent months I’ve understood that I have a responsibility to my readers so I’ve tried to improve the quality of my posts, that means that now I’m giving more priority to what I write about instead of how often I do it. That is why you can observe that now I post less frequently… 

The second change you can observe is that now I’m writing less about art galleries and more about comic books. The reason is quite simple: most of my posts about contemporary art receive less visits than the average post, and sometimes they get zero comments. 

The conclusion is obvious: people come here to read about comics and films but not necessarily about art galleries, which is fine by me. I’ll continue talking about art exhibitions, as they are a part of my life, but I won’t do it as often as I used to.

Just to show you an example of what I’m talking about, I’m attaching a list of posts so you can see how many visits I get for each one of them. My article about Bryan Singer’s sexual scandal, aptly titled “Days of Scandals Past” has received over one thousand hits, my posts about comics have more than one hundred visits (combining the amount of hits, the total would be around 500), and the final post has only 72 hits, and it’s no coincidence that it is a post dedicated to an art exhibition. I rest my case.

Ayer jueves se inauguró en Dédalo la muestra bipersonal “Pájaros en la cabeza” de Mónica Cuba e Isabelle Decencière, grandes amigas y talentosas artistas que han reunido su creatividad en un proyecto admirable. 

Con esculturas y piezas ornamentales de cerámica y madera, ambas artistas han explorado la frase que da título a la muestra, fabricando primorosamente personajes con pájaros que anidan en sus cabezas. La curaduría de la muestra es notable, y eso se hace evidente al ver la forma en que las piezas de Mónica dialogan con las de Isabelle, llenando el espacio de colorido y armonía.

Por supuesto, apenas llegué a Dédalo las saludé y las felicité por una muestra tan maravillosa. Luego me quedé conversando un par de horas con mi amigo Andreé Ferro, así que tuve oportunidad de hablar sobre mi viaje a Santa Cruz (Bolivia), los enredos de la Embajada de Malasia y los nuevos proyectos que, desde ahora, estoy preparando.

Les recomiendo que se den una vuelta por Sáenz Peña y visitan la sala de exposiciones de Dédalo. Quedarán sorprendidos al ver obras de tan alto vuelo.

Venancio Shinki - Lucía de la Puente

When I first posted something on this blog I had approximately one or two visitors per day. It took me a long time to actually appear on Google. And years to go from hundreds of visits each moth to a few thousands.

Today, however, I’d like to celebrate the fact that for the past 12 months I’ve consistently maintained and, in fact, increased the amount of visitors. 

I was surprised to receive 30,000 visits in a month (that’s roughly 1,000 visitors in one day), but recently I’ve seen that number doubled and now I’ve reached and surpassed the 60,000 mark.

Of course none of this would have been possible without you, my faithful readers, and for that I am quite grateful. Thank you!

Now, and as a curiosity, I am including some statistical information about my blog, so you can see that there is, indeed, a healthy growth tendency. 

Let us hope that this will only be the beginning of better times for Arion’s Archaic Art.

Venancio Shinki

Venancio Shinki, artista de ilustre trayectoria, nos sorprende en esta ocasión con una exquisita selección de cuadros en la galería Lucía de la Puente. Los cuadros de Shinki se afirman en una tradición sincrética, en una armonía entre las influencias artísticas nacionales y la belleza del arte oriental.

Como haikus visuales, formas depuradas de todo elemento innecesario, y bellas en sí misma no sólo para el ojo que las contempla sino, cómo no, para la mente contempladora y filosófica, el magnífico arte de Shinki captura nuestra atención y nos deleita por completo.

La noche de la inauguración fue muy concurrida, y de hecho para mí fue un momento sumamente agradable porque me encontré con mi amiga y ex colega de la revista COSAS, Laura Alzubide, con el escritor Guillermo Niño de Guzmán y con su hijo, con quien charlé brevemente (le pregunté, sobre todo, qué restaurantes me recomendaba en Santa Cruz, que es adonde me toca ir de viaje la próxima semana).

También me encontré con dos grandes amigos, Andreé Ferro y Marcos Palacios, nuestra conversación fue amenizada por la presencia de generosos vasos de whisky Johnnie Walker Black Label y chilcanos heladitos cortesía de pisco Portón.

En el transcurso de la noche me encontré con varios amigos y saludé a gente que no veía hacía meses. Esperemos que la próxima inauguración en Lucía de la Puente sea igual de divertida.
  
La muestra estará abierta al público hasta fines de junio. Realmente les recomiendo que se den una vuelta por Barranco y visiten la galería.

We don’t have enough room for pets, but in 2003 my parents agreed to buy my brother a white rabbit, who answered to the awfully original name of ‘Bunny’. And so the years went by and we grew fond of Bunny.

Yesterday, she fell down from our roof and had a rather abrupt death. It’s unbelievable but after nine years you can develop a special bond with an animal. We were all at home, my dad, my mom, my brother. And it was like one of our relatives had passed away.


We buried Bunny last night. It was a sad moment for the family. And then, today I was still feeling kind of sad and when I checked my blog’s stats, I realized that my “Fracture of the Universal Boy” post had over 1000 visits in less than 24 hours. I didn’t understand why and then I realized it was because Neil Gaiman, in twitter, had written about my ‘inspiring blog’ and my post about Michael Zulli’s graphic novel. 

Neil is not only an awarded and successful writer, but he’s also one of my all-time favorite comic book authors. To have him say all these nice things about me was like a dream come true. And I remembered how passionate is Neil with his cats. And suddenly it all kind of made sense in a weird sort of way. Thanks Neil, again, not only for being there as a revered name on the cover of books but also as a totally unexpected friend that shows up when the need arises.

If you have something you want to share about your dogs, cats (or rabbits) please feel free to do so. I’ll really appreciate it.

Por cuestiones de espacio no tenemos perros ni gatos. Pero mi hermano menor quería una mascota, así que el 2003 mi papá le compró una coneja, bautizada luego como ‘Bunny’ (un nombre terriblemente original, sin duda, pero al que nos acostumbramos rápidamente). La coneja se convirtió en la engreída de la casa, los años iban pasando y ella seguía brincando y corriendo por la azotea con mucho entusiasmo.


El día de ayer, no obstante, tocan el timbre y nos avisan que la coneja se ha caído del techo de la casa. Difícil saber si fue un tropiezo del animalito o si es que, con nueve años a cuestas, su agilidad ya no era la misma. Mi hermano la recogió enseguida, la echó sobre un par de almohadas pero ya no había nada que hacer. La coneja estaba inmóvil. Estábamos todos en casa: mi papá, mi mamá, mi hermano y yo, y parecía que hubiera muerto alguien de la familia. Son inexplicables esos lazos que establecemos con nuestras mascotas, y a veces parece mentira que su muerte nos afecte pero así es.


Nunca me hubiera imaginado que podría sentirme triste por la coneja de mi hermano, pero después de nueve años ya no se trataba simplemente de un animal cualquiera. Ella era Bunny, y tal como lo haría un perro, siempre asomaba la cabecita cuando la llamábamos por su nombre, o se paraba en dos patas cuando chasqueábamos los dedos. Así que enterrarla en el jardincito de la puerta de la casa convirtió esas horas en una noche inesperadamente triste para toda la familia.

Hoy, cuando subí a la azotea tuve una sensación un poco extraña. Todo seguía igual de sucio y desordenado (al fin y al cabo, la empleada rara vez limpia allá arriba) pero Bunny ya no estaba ahí. Luego entro a mi blog y veo que mi post sobre “The Fracture of the Universal Boy” ha tenido más de mil visitas en menos de un día, y todas vienen de twitter. 

Indago un poco más y descubro por qué: Neil Gaiman, uno de los escritores británicos más premiados y exitosos (tanto en Inglaterra como en Estados Unidos), y uno de mis autores favoritos, había recomendado que leyeran mi ‘inspirador blog’, concretamente, mi post sobre la novela gráfica de Michael Zulli. Recordé entonces lo apasionado que es Neil con sus gatos, y un texto que debo haber leído en alguna entrevista sobre los sentimientos que tenemos hacia nuestras mascotas y sobre la pérdida. Esto también ha sido algo totalmente inesperado, aunque en este caso me ha hecho sentir bien.
