Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling # 1 - Chip Zdarsky, Anthony Oliveira & Manuel García

In 2005 Allan Heinberg forever changed the Marvel Universe with the introduction of two amazing characters: Wiccan and Hulkling. Although portraying two gay teenage superheroes as a loving couple was quite controversial amidst the most conservative sector of Marvel readers, Heinberg never gave up and turned Young Avengers not only into one of the most successful titles but also one of the most revered and admired by fans.

We all knew that Billy Kaplan (Wiccan) and Teddy Altman (Hulkling) were lovers, but due to the extremely prudish mindset of some readers, we never got to see the two of them kissing on the page in the original series. We had to wait 7 years until Heinberg wrote the miniseries Avengers: the Children’s Crusade. In 2012, Billy and Teddy kissed each other for the first time. 

The young heroes kissed again on multiple occasions on Kieron Gillen’s Young Avengers in 2013, proving that what was once considered controversial was no longer such a big taboo. However, for a gay couple their sex life was, shall we say, enshrouded in secrecy. Were they doing the dirty or not? I’m sure many fans were asking that question, and judging by the plethora of erotic fanfic art available online, many of them had found a way to answer that!

Teddy Altman (Hulkling)

In “Profane the Precious Time” (originally published in Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling # 1, September 2020), Chip Zdarsky and Anthony Oliveira write a fascinating story that revolves around Hulkling, his role as future emperor and most especially his relationship with Wiccan. Manuel Garcia does an amazing job as a penciler, providing sequences full of action but also more calmed moments, in which the characters can be seen as vulnerable and human as ever. Cam Smith is the inker and Triona Farrell the colorist, while the striking cover of this issue is by Patrick Gleason. 

The extraordinary splash page in which we see Teddy Altman laying in bed, has a unique level of realism and grace that only Garcia could’ve accomplished. There is also a strong romantic tone in the page in which Teddy and Billy are cuddling together, overlooking the city. Of course, the moment all fans were waiting for, the moment that had inspired thousands of fanfic art, is magnificently illustrated by Garcia. Marvel’s most prominent gay couple end up making love on an alien spaceship.

However, this is more than a simple sexual encounter. Zdarsky and Oliveira create a compelling story in which love between two young men is no longer a taboo, but that doesn’t make things any easier. Wiccan belongs to our world, while Hulkling has to embrace his position as the new emperor of an alien civilization. This one shot feels just as special as Young Avengers did, and only this amazing creative team would have been able to pull that off.

Hulkling & Wiccan

La extraordinaria página completa en la que vemos a Teddy Altman acostado en la cama, tiene un nivel único de realismo y gracia que solo García podría haber logrado. También hay un fuerte tono romántico en la página en la que Teddy y Billy se acurrucan, avistando la ciudad. Por supuesto, el momento que todos los fanáticos estaban esperando, el momento que había inspirado a miles de fanfic art, está magníficamente ilustrado por García. Spider-Man: Life Story - Chip Zdarsky & Mark Bagley

As part of Marvel’s anniversary celebrations, a lot of promising new miniseries and one-shots have been released, but my favorite is Spider-Man: Life Story. Every issue takes place in a different decade, and we can see how things change for Peter Parker in ways that would’ve been impossible in the regular Marvel Universe. 

“Marvel has always been the world outside your window, the four-color heroes and villains rendered against the same historical and cultural backdrops as their readers were. However, over the course of Marvel’s existence there have been major historical events that for whatever reason they have not been able to fully wrestle with, be it because they happened too quickly or even because they were too raw of a subject”. And in the first chapter of Spider-Man: Life Story, which takes place in 1966, we see this tension between the major historical event, the Vietnam war, and the fact that superheroes don’t participate in it. 

There are many ways in which a hero can define himself, and for a 19-year old Spider-Man, sometimes it’s difficult to understand what it means to use his power responsibly. Is it his responsibility to go to Vietnam and support America’s troops? Because that is precisely what Iron Man is doing (and evidently Stark industries are supplying armament to the US military). For Flash Thompson, enlisting in the army and going to the war is the right thing to do, because that’s what he thinks Spider-Man would do, and Spider-Man is, after all, Flash’s idol. But Spider-Man feels hesitant about participating in the war, and he’s not the only one harboring doubts.

When Spider-Man meets Captain America on the streets of New York, the WWII superhero explains that “To wake up from the end of one war and to find myself facing another war --a very different one-- it’s… a lot to process. I don’t know if this war is right… but I do know people are dying, and our country’s name and ideology are tied to it”. Once again, just like in Mark Millar’s Civil War, there is a diametrical opposite way of finding solutions for the same problem. For Iron Man, the answer is mass-producing weapons, arming America’s troops and actively fighting against Vietnamese soldiers. For Captain America, however, there is something inherently wrong with this war, something immoral and unethical, and as the Sentinel of Liberty and the embodiment of America’s highest ideals, he cannot do what Iron Man does so easily; and so in 1967, Captain America turns his back on the US military an decides to defend small Vietnamese villages from American troops. 

Zdarsky creates an alternative universe similar to the one we’re familiar with and yet eerily different. In the 70s, when Peter Parker accuses Reed Richards of not doing enough to truly help mankind, the smartest man alive says that it would be irresponsible of him to give away technology that could very well disrupt world economy. At the same time, the war in Vietnam lasts more years in this reality, and here one of the many casualties is Flash Thompson. A few subtle details introduced are more than enough to provide historical context for the story; when Peter Parker visits club 54 in New York, he sees his friends Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osborn indulging in alcohol and drugs. 

There is something absolutely fascinating about watching superheroes, immortal figures by definition, aging in the pages of a comic book. In Life Story, every issue represents a decade, and so by the time we reach the 80s, Spider-Man is about to turn 40. The most important storylines of the 80s are present here: the Secret Wars, the appearance of Venom and of course Kraven’s Last Hunt. But things are different, the reason why Peter Parker becomes dependent on the symbiote that will turn into Venom makes perfect sense: “I’m… I’m getting older, Reed. Slowing down. The suit… it helps. I need to stay strong to protect people. To… be relevant”. And Kraven here is not the noble villain we saw in the classic saga by DeMatteis and Zeck but rather a desperate man with cancer. 

Secret Wars

Zdarsky also reimagines the infamous clone saga from the 90s. Here aunt May has senile dementia and eventually dies of old age. And there is an open confrontation between Peter Parker and Tony Stark, who refuses to stop producing weapons. In the next decade we have, of course, the superhero civil war, which becomes even more relevant as a 60-year-old Peter Parker must come out from retirement to help Captain America fight against Iron Man. The last issue, which takes place in this decade, reminds us that many of the so called legacy heroes can only be relevant if they have a chance to thrive on their own, there is a new African American Spider-Man ready to take over; and now a 70-year-old Peter Parker goes on a last mission with Miles Morales, the new Spider-Man. This will be Peter’s last mission, as he sacrifices himself. Before dying, he has a unique epiphany, as he relives his first date with Mary Jane, when they were still young and full of hope for the future. Despite appearances, this is not a bitter end, but rather a heroic conclusion.

Symbioses gone wrong / problemas con la simbiosis

Throughout the miniseries, Chip Zdarsky pays homage to the history of the arachnid hero reconfiguring classic moments, altering the history in ways that make it resonate in more realistic terms. The goal here is not to ignore all the difficult decisions, the important historical moments that happened in each decade, but rather to confront them, to make our most beloved heroes act and react in scenarios that they rarely visit or contemplate. 

Chip Zdarsky’s covers have clearly been designed in a way that each one of them references a key moment from each decade, while preserving a unique hand-painted aspect. Mark Bagley’s art is more than amazing. His spectacular dynamism and his wonderful page layout are a joy to behold. But above all, there is a unique, almost timeless quality to his lines, which allows us, the readers, to easily transition from one decade to the next. I’ve been a Bagley fan for years and I would dare to affirm that Spider-Man: Life Story may very well be his best work to date.

Cada capítulo tiene lugar en una década diferente, y podemos ver cómo todo cambia para Peter Parker de una forma que hubiese sido imposible en el Universo Marvel normal.

Kraven

“Marvel siempre ha sido el mundo afuera de tu ventana, los héroes y villanos de cuatro colores representados en los mismos escenarios históricos y culturales que sus lectores. Sin embargo, a lo largo de la existencia de Marvel ha habido grandes acontecimientos históricos con los que, por un motivo u otro, no han podido ser explorados por completo, ya sea porque ocurrieron demasiado rápido o incluso porque eran asuntos de extremada crudeza". Y en el primer capítulo de Spider-Man: Life Story, que tiene lugar en 1966, vemos esta tensión entre el evento histórico más importante, la guerra de Vietnam, y el hecho de que los superhéroes no participan en ella.

The death of Harry Osborn / la muerte de Harry Osborn

Hay muchas maneras en que un héroe puede definirse a sí mismo, y para un Spider-Man de 19 años, a veces es difícil entender lo que significa usar su poder de manera responsable. ¿Es su responsabilidad ir a Vietnam y apoyar a las tropas estadounidenses? A lo largo de la miniserie, Chip Zdarsky rinde homenaje a la historia del héroe arácnido reconfigurando momentos clásicos, alterando la historia de manera que resuene en términos más realistas. El objetivo aquí no es ignorar todas las decisiones difíciles, los momentos históricos importantes que ocurrieron en cada década, sino confrontarlos, hacer que nuestros héroes más queridos actúen y reaccionen en escenarios que rara vez visitan o contemplan.

October comic books / cómics de octubre

While you were out there celebrating Halloween, I was a happy prisoner of a veritable mountain of good comics! Some were simply good (Night of the Living Dead, New Mutants), others were very good (Thor: God of Thunder) and others were a masterpiece (Sandman: Endless Nights). I had a wonderful triple dose of Quitely: Sandman: Endless Nights (it’s so great that I had to mention it at least twice), Jupiter’s Legacy (I must write about it on a future post) and Earth 2 (Morrison’s story is very impressive and those Quitely pages are gorgeous). I hadn’t read any good Jeph Loeb comic in the past decade or so, but I enjoyed these issues of Nova, I don’t know if the protagonist (Sam) is Jeph’s homage to his own deceased son (Sam Loeb), but I certainly liked the idea of a kid following his father’s example (in real life Sam Loeb wrote comics just like his father did). I had fun with the reprint of the classic Wally Wood’s Thunder Agents. And I got bored with Wood’s Ultimate X-Men. But if I talk only about new releases, what I probably enjoyed the most this month was the first issues of Three (Gillen is quickly becoming one of my favorite new British writers) and Sex Criminals (by far, my favorite Matt Fraction creator-owned property… I don’t know why, but I was very disappointed by Fraction’s Casanova and Satellite Sam; and for a long time I thought he was only good writing Iron Man, FF or Defenders for Marvel but turns out that Sex Criminals is a brilliant series with a very seductive concept). And now, without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations.

Mientras ustedes estaban celebrando Halloween, yo era un feliz prisionero de una verdadera montaña de buenos cómics. Algunos fueron simplemente buenos (Night of the Living Dead, New Mutants), otros fueron muy buenos (Thor: God of Thunder) y otros fueron una obra maestra (Sandman: Endless Nights). Recibí una maravillosa dosis triple de Quitely: Sandman: Endless Nights (es tan grandioso que tenía que mencionarlo al menos dos veces), Jupiter’s Legacy (le dedicaré un post dentro de poco) y Earth 2 (la historia de Morrison es muy impresionante y las páginas de Quitely son preciosas). No había leído ningún cómic bueno de Jeph Loeb en la última década, pero disfruté con estos números de Nova, no sé si el protagonista (Sam) es un homenaje de Jeph a su propio hijo fallecido (Sam Loeb), pero ciertamente me gustó la idea de un chiquillo que sigue el ejemplo de su padre (en la vida real Sam Loeb escribió cómics al igual que su padre). Me divertí con la reimpresión del clásico Thunder Agents de Wally Wood. Y me aburrí con los Ultimate X-Men de Wood. Pero si sólo hablara de nuevas entregas, probablemente lo que más disfruté este mes fueron los primeros números de Three (Gillen rápidamente se está convirtiendo en uno de mis nuevos escritores británicos favoritos) y Sex Criminals (de lejos, mi creación original favorita de Matt Fraction... no sé por qué, pero me decepcionó mucho el Casanova de Fraction y su Satellite Sam; y por mucho tiempo pensé que él solamente era bueno escribiendo Iron Man, FF o Defenders para Marvel pero resulta que Sex Criminals es una serie brillante con un concepto muy seductor). Y ahora, sin mayores preámbulos, ahí van los cómics de octubre.
