September films / películas de setiembre

If you read this blog frequently then you already know that Ryan Gosling is one of my favorite actors. And this month I has the chance to see him in Only God Forgives (2013), directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, who had already surprised me with Drive. Only God Forgives is an extraordinary film about revenge. With exquisitely assembled scenes, the director creates unforgettable violent sequences. There are fascinating characters and the acting is top notch. I would say this was truly of one the best 2013 films.

Gangster Squad (2013) reunites Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in Los Angeles in the 50s. The mob runs rampant, and a special undercover squad is the city’s last chance. A very correct historical reconstruction and a good group of actors turn this into a very interesting production.

Director Carter Smith impressed me tremendously with Bugcrush, one of the best short films I’ve seen in my life. So I was really looking forward to seeing Jamie Marks is Dead (2014), a remarkable exercise of subtle horror, teenage sexuality and the concept of loss. Jamie Marks (played by Noah Silver) is an average high school student and also a victim of bullying. Until one day he is murdered. Adam (Cameron Monaghan) remembers the dead boy, but at the same time feels guilty for never helping him against the bullies. Soon, Adam starts seeing the ghost of Jamie, and slowly but surely, this phantasmagorical presence becomes an important part of his life. The filmmaker creates a captivating atmosphere in which life seems to fade away to embrace the coldness of death, as Adam goes deeper into the world of the ghosts, withdrawing from his normal life, rejecting his mother (Liv Tyler) and putting her girlfriend, Morgan Saylor, on a second plane. One of the best films of the year. I really recommend it.

Hideo Nakata’s Chatroom (2010) deals with perversion and teenage angst. When Aaron Taylor-Johnson (famous for his protagonic role in Kick-Ass), a manipulative teenager, creates a chatroom for outcast youngsters, he makes them believe they’ve found a safe haven online, a place where they can be themselves… he provides them with a false sense of security. The teen has but one goal in his mind: to convince Matthew Beard, an insecure boy, to commit suicide. Nakata expresses the ever-changing environment of the web in a very creative manner, while conveying the despair of youth with conviction.

Miguel Arteta’s Youth in Revolt (2009) is a funny, rebellious and mischievous proposal. Michael Cera is a horny teenager who spends his days masturbating and fantasizing about girls that never pay attention to him. He shares his frustration with his best friend Erik Knudsen, until one day, on vacation, his luck finally changes. He meets Portia Doubleday, a lovely girl, and he falls in love with her. But at the same time, he develops an alter ego, a double personality. His exscinded mind allows him to commit vandalism and many other things that he will regret later on, but now he is brave enough to actually lose his virginity. Youth in Revolt is a breadth of fresh air and an amazing portrait of youth.

Beginners (2010), written and directed by Mike Mills, focuses on the lives of Ewan McGregor, a lonely man who has problems meeting girls, and Christopher Plummer, his father, an old man who comes out of the closet after decades of pretending to be straight. The filmmaker compares 2 different eras, the 60s and the present, and how morality, sexuality and social demands shifted and transmuted into something else. In the past, the heterosexual normative reigned supreme, in the present, the option of being gay is acceptable. Mélanie Laurent also plays an important role as McGregor’s new couple. Dramatic, sad, deeply evocative and touching, Beginners is a heartfelt analysis of the joys and frustrations of love, both gay and straight.

Matthew Mishory writes and directs Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean (2012), a biopic centered on teen idol and “rebel without a cause”, James Dean (played by James Preston) on the cusp of becoming famous. As a bisexual young man, James Dean has sexual encounters with men and women, and he takes advantage of his boyish charm to seduce big shot Hollywood producers. Combining a documentary style with a lightly experimental filmmaking technique, Mishory recreates the secrets of an icon of the 7th art.

More Than Friendship (2013) is a peculiar movie about two boys and a girl that have a very intimate relationship, they’re friends but they also have sex with each other. It has a couple of interesting moments but overall this was quite a disappointing German production.

From France comes Les garçons et Guillaume, à table! (2013), a chronicle of the life of Guillaume Gallienne, a young man who struggles to discover his sexual identity. With plenty of humor and originality, this coming of age tale manages to capture the frustration of not knowing what sexual role one is supposed to play.
