“Ciudad” (originally published in the 80s, in the “Zero Hour” anthology) is a great example of the creativity of two of the best South American creators of the 20th century: Ricardo Barreiro (writer) and Juan Giménez (artist). My first contact with this comic was somewhat sporadic: I read barely a couple of chapters in “Comix Internacional”, and I was thirsty for more, until many years later I acquired the trade paperback.
Faithful to the literary style of Cortázar and Borges, the story begins firmly inserted in daily life. Jean, the protagonist has a boring job, he makes minimum wage, and he is constantly arguing with his girlfriend. One night, after a heated debate, Jean decides to relax and goes out for a walk. And inadvertently ends up getting lost. And his disorientation becomes the prelude of fantasy.
Suddenly, Jean is now a prisoner of the city, an endless megalopolis, which encompasses all possible geographic regions and all the eras in history. The City, then, acts like Borges' mythical Aleph, it's a convergence point where man can witness that which is unlimited; it's also similar to Kurt Vonnegut's chronosynclastic infundibulum.
Ricardo Barreiro has adequately organized this graphic novel in short but shocking chapters, focusing on Jean and Karen, his only ally in a hostile and weird world. Together they try to survive, facing all kinds of threats, from violent groups of marauders, doomed to forever wander in the endless City, to impossible and strange weather events (for instance, the Universal Deluge).

Oesterheld, Carlos Trillo y Ricardo Barreiro.
