Like a treasure hunter, I always look for the best available titles. The selection process begins early. In fact, two months prior to the date I place my order, I’m already checking out solicitations and choosing what seems to be more promising. Then I read everything I buy and I keep in mind which titles have captivated me the most. Finally, I share my opinions with you at the end of the year, as I’m doing right now. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the fourth annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Art is what turns comics into a superior form of narrative. Throughout the decades, pencilers and inkers have experimented with different styles and artistic approaches. But regardless of the year or the name of the artist, graphic quality has always been the most important component of the ninth art. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months, so it’s only fair to reward them appropriately: Geof Darrow for his extraordinary and inspiring “The Shaolin Cowboy”, Das Pastoras for his fantastic illustrations in “Thor: God of Thunder” and Jason Fabok for his outstanding contribution to “Detective Comics”.
When buying a comic, the first I thing I look at is the cover. The mission of the cover is to seduce the reader’s eyes. So it has to be attractive, it has to outshine all other covers, it has to persuade us to acquire the book. Drawing an eye-catching cover is no easy task. Luckily, there are artists that continue to amaze me with their output: Yuko Shimizu for the high quality level and thematic consistency of “The Unwritten”, Mukesh Singh for his remarkable efforts in “All-New Invaders” and Nick Bradshaw, for his delightful and charming work in “Wolverine & The X-Men”.
Editors must learn how to bring the best out of their creative teams, without interfering excessively. Editing can be a difficult process, and most of the times even when it’s done appropriately it goes unnoticed or unpraised. I would like to congratulate Lauren Sankovitch, for successfully editing “Young Avengers” (winner of the 2013 AAA for Best Ongoing Series).
This year I finally had the chance to read Alan Moore’s “From Hell”. It is the best graphic novel I’ve read in recent years. A true masterpiece that I need to reread again. However, faithful to the rules of the AAA, I can only choose material originally published in 2014. So the distinction for Best Single Issue goes to Detective Comics # 27, an extraordinary anniversary issue and an astonishing lineup of some of the industry’s most relevant authors.

Last year it was a strong competitor in this category. Now, it’s the winner. “Thor: God of Thunder” deserves to be praised as the Best Ongoing Series of 2014. Jason Aaron wrote some of the most meaningful and inventive tales about the Odinson, and marvelous artists like Esad Ribic and Das Pastoras graced the pages of this title with their beautiful illustrations.
When I first came across “Kick-Ass”, back in 2009, I had no idea what I had been missing. Mark Millar completely surprised me with this saga about a nerdy boy who decides to dress up as a superhero to fight against crime. Millar continued to offer us fresh new takes on the superhero genre. “Kick-Ass 3”, the last volume of this exceptional series, moved me in ways that I could not have anticipated. I cannot believe how connected I felt with all of it. “Kick-Ass 3” truly deserves as many trophies as possible. After all, it was the Best Limited Series of the year.
There were so many promising new series that I had a hard time making a selection. Titles as impressive as “Dead Boy Detectives”, “All-New Invaders”, “Loki: Agent of Asgard”, “Deadly Class”, “Moon Knight”, “Caliban”, “The Wicked + The Divine”, “Starlight”, “Silver Surfer” and “MPH” were in my list. However, in the end, I decided to choose “The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw” as the Best New Series. Kurt Busiek has created a magical and fascinating new world.
“The Last Temptation” is an unsung masterpiece. So I’m grateful to see Dynamite giving it the deluxe treatment it deserves. Without a shadow of a doubt, “The Last Temptation” gets the prize for Best Archival Collection / Reprint. This is one edition that I’ll treasure forever.
“This doesn’t bode well for Vertigo”, became a recurring phrase right after the departure of Karen Berger. Nevertheless, Vertigo has prospered beyond the pessimistic augurs of 2012. Some of my favorite titles such as “Sandman Overture”, “The Unwritten”, “The Wake” and “Astro City” come from this imprint. So that’s why I’m going against the trend and giving Vertigo the recognition it has earned as Best Publisher.

“Ars longa, vita brevis” goes an old Latin saying. Art, indeed, can be everlasting even if our lives are doomed to end. In 2014 we say goodbye to several prominent creators: Steve Moore, a very respected British author, and a mentor for legendary writer Alan Moore. I’m familiar with Steve Moore’s stories for “2000AD”, and I was truly saddened when I read in the news that he was gone. Dick Ayers, was a very popular name in the silver age, he was famous for his work in the early days of Marvel Comics and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2007. Finally, Jeremy Dale was the creator of the acclaimed title “Skyward” and a collaborator in “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero”. Fans and followers were devastated when they found out that Jeremy was only 34 years old when he passed away.
I started this post explaining how I methodically and carefully choose what comics I get each month. However, no methodology can be 100% effective, so every now and then I get really bad comic books in my list. Reading “Avengers & X-Men: Axis” was a complete waste of my time (it’s hard to believe that the same Remender who wrote “Uncanny Avengers” also wrote this rubbish). This narrative disaster also has the ugliest drawings I’ve seen from Adam Kubert in decades. This was really the worst title of the year. The worst first issue also comes from Marvel, I’m talking about Winter Soldier: Bitter March # 1. Boring and with awful pencils, not even the cover saves this one. And the most disappointing project would be “Conan: People of the Black Circle”. This is the second time that a Dark Horse Conan title lets me down. Maybe it’s because I grew up reading Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith’s run on “Conan the Barbarian”, but the thing is that every time I try to get into Conan’s new material I find it absolutely abysmal.
And thus 2014 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.
I bid thee farewell and long live the ninth art!

Cada vez que recibo mi caja de cómics, me siento como un niño pequeño en navidad. Es una sensación maravillosa. Proyecto más decepcionante - Conan: People of the Black Circle
Alguna vez, alguien dijo que las ideas pueden ser más valiosas que el oro. Las buenas ideas son, de hecho, algo precioso y poco común. El arte es lo que convierte a los cómics en una forma superior de narrativa. A lo largo de las décadas, dibujantes de todo tipo han experimentado con diferentes estilos y enfoques artísticos. Al comprar un cómic, lo primero que hago es mirar la portada. La misión de la portada es seducir los ojos del lector. Afortunadamente, hay artistas que continúan asombrándome con su producción: Yuko Shimizu por el alto nivel de calidad y la consistencia temática de “The Unwritten”, Mukesh Singh por sus notables esfuerzos en “All-New Invaders” y Nick Bradshaw, por su delicioso y encantador trabajo en “Wolverine & The X-Men”.

“The Last Temptation” es una obra maestra poco conocida. Así que agradezco que Dynamite le diese el tratamiento de lujo que merece. Sin la menor duda, “The Last Temptation” recibe el premio a Mejor obra coleccionada / reimpresión. Esta es una edición que atesoraré para siempre.
