Eternals # 7-12 - Kieron Gillen & Esad Ribić

At the beginning of “Hail Thanos” (originally published in Eternals # 7-12, from January to July 2022), we see Ikaris still reeling from the unfortunate events of “Only Death is Eternal”, namely the death of Toby Robson, a 13 year-old boy, whom he had sworn to protect. Ikaris feels he has failed, there is inner turmoil; and he needs to find a way to forgive himself. There are many questions that he's trying to answer and at the same Thanos has become the Prime Eternal, the absolute ruler of the Eternals. 

Ikaris and his team had to seek asylum in Lemuria, the city of the Deviants. It is here that we see Tolau, the Deviant who’s Thena’s lover; barely a supporting character in the past arc, here he becomes a fascinating presence. Kieron Gillen comes up with a brilliant concept about art in Lemuria; for Eternals art is difficult to understand but for a Deviant, art is part of their lives. Tolau has prepared a new art exhibition and one of his main pieces is a sculpture that shows the figure of Thena made of a special alloy of metal, which represents her immortality, and the other sculpture is that of Tolau himself, kneeling before this Eternal goddess, the second sculpture is not made of metal, stone or wood… it is made of raw flesh, which from the very beginning starts to decompose. 

For Thena and the other Eternals it's impossible to understand this concept. Art can be eternal, that is true, but as the artist explains, “Art can be eternal but, it need not be. My art is transitory, beautiful and awful like life”. There's so much beauty in that concept. As a Deviant, Tolau understands he only has a mortal lifespan, he will not be present forever, and all of that is symbolized in his art and his sculpture.

Tolau wants more than anything else to keep living and to keep making art, but his days are numbered. He has a genetic disease that forms part of his DNA, once he reaches the point of ‘excessive deviation’, any Eternal close to him will feel compelled to exterminate him, as it has been going on for thousands of years. There is nothing Eternals can do to stop themselves from killing a Deviant once they reach the stage of excessive deviation so that makes even more meaningful the fact that he's producing this exceptional art exhibition. 

While Ikaris is trying to adapt to life in Lemuria, Khoryphos explains he did the same thing as Thena, he also left the Eternals and got married to a Deviant artist, and decided to live in Lemuria. This uneasy peace is occasionally interrupted by the fact that the Eternals must kill those who come into excessive deviation. In this context, Thanos decides to capture Phastos to unleash his unlimited power for destruction. 

It is during Thanos attack that the tragedy occurs. Tolau has been slowly mutating, reaching the point of excessive deviation. Thanos spares Tolau’s life, as he understands that the Deviant doesn't have much time left and he doesn't want to be accused of killing someone mercifully. Tolau is left in the arms of his beloved Thena; she thinks that she will be able to stay with him no matter what. But as soon as he reaches the point of excessive deviation she is compelled to kill him. A sad way to say goodbye to one of the most interesting characters in the pages of the Eternals.

While Thanos is torturing Phastos, the rest of the Eternals try to break into the new headquarters of the Avengers, which happens to be the corpse of one of the Celestials. They think they might be able to communicate with the essence of the Celestials to find guidance in the predicament they are in now. As part of their subterfuge, Sersi decides to have dinner with Namor the Submariner, who has quite a funny conversation about it with Iron Man and Captain Marvel. 

As I have said before, Esad Ribić is really a master of composition and anatomy, he has a unique understanding of what constitutes a dramatic image and he’s able to create fascinating landscapes; men and women full of emotion and gravitas. Ribić has an outstanding sensibility that only some of the biggest names in the past shared, he is in many ways a disciple of Frank Frazetta. The only problem with Ribić is that it probably takes him quite a long time to produce such excellent artwork and because Eternals is a monthly series, he did not have the time to catch up. That’s why all the additional one-shots were not illustrated by him, and here issues 9 and 11, are by Guiu Villanova, who is a competent penciler and inker but who lacks all the grandiosity of Ribić. Finally, we see the confrontation between the Avengers and the Eternals who have failed to surreptitiously infiltrate their base. 

Ikaris

Because of the time constraints we can see how the last issues, especially number 12, feel slightly rushed compared to previous ones. That is understandable because we know that time is of the essence and comics must be published monthly, but I wish they would have given Ribić all the time that he needed, even if that meant to wait additional months for the comic to come out. In the conclusion we see how the Eternals and the Avengers are fighting each other; it's difficult to guess who could win as they are evenly matched but at the end, of course, they decide to stop fighting. 

Tolau

Thanos is immensely powerful but having been betrayed by Druid he ends up defeated and, finally, Druid becomes the Prime Eternal, the absolute ruler of the Eternals, he is pondering on the fact that mutants might be in a way deviants and if that's the case then it will be the duty of the Eternals to eradicate mutantkind. That will be of course a hint of the next Marvel event, Judgment Day, which I decided to skip because I haven't been interested in getting Marvel or DC events in the past 10 years or so.

Ikaris siente que ha fallado, hay confusión interna; y necesita encontrar una manera de perdonarse a sí mismo. Hay muchas preguntas que está tratando de responder y, al mismo tiempo, Thanos se ha convertido en el Primer Eterno, el gobernante absoluto de los Eternos.

Kingo & Ikaris

Ikaris y su equipo tuvieron que buscar asilo en Lemuria, la ciudad de los desviantes. Es aquí donde vemos a Tolau, el desviante que es el amante de Thena; apenas un personaje secundario en el arco pasado, aquí se convierte en una presencia fascinante. Kieron Gillen presenta un concepto brillante sobre el arte en Lemuria; para los Eternals el arte es difícil de entender pero para un desviante, el arte es parte de sus vidas. Tolau ha preparado una nueva exposición de arte y una de sus piezas principales es una escultura que muestra la figura de Thena realizada en una aleación especial de metal, que representa su inmortalidad, y la otra escultura es la del propio Tolau, arrodillado ante esta Eterna diosa, la segunda escultura no está hecha de metal, piedra o madera… está hecha de carne cruda, que desde el principio comienza a descomponerse.

Druig & Thanos

Para Thena y los demás Eternals es imposible entender este concepto. El arte puede ser eterno, eso es cierto, pero como explica el artista, “El arte puede ser eterno pero no tiene por qué serlo. Mi arte es transitorio, bello y terrible como la vida”. Hay tanta belleza en ese concepto. Como desviante, Tolau entiende que sólo tiene una vida mortal, que no estará presente para siempre, y todo eso está simbolizado en su arte y su escultura.

Tolau quiere más que nada seguir viviendo y seguir haciendo arte, pero sus días están contados. Tiene una enfermedad genética que forma parte de su ADN, una vez que llega al punto de 'desviación excesiva', cualquier Eterno cercano a él se sentirá obligado a exterminarlo, como ha sido durante miles de años. No hay nada que los Eternos puedan hacer para evitar matar a un desviante una vez que alcanzan la etapa de desviación excesiva, por ello es aun más significativo el hecho de que él está organizando esta exhibición de arte excepcional.

Thanos

Mientras Ikaris intenta adaptarse a la vida en Lemuria, Khoryphos explica que hizo lo mismo que Thena, también dejó a los Eternos y se casó con una artista desviante, y decidió vivir en Lemuria. Esta paz inquieta es ocasionalmente interrumpida por el hecho de que los Eternos deben matar a aquellos que se desvían excesivamente. En este contexto, Thanos decide capturar a Phastos para desatar su ilimitado poder de destrucción.

Es durante el ataque de Thanos que ocurre la tragedia. Tolau ha ido mutando lentamente, llegando al punto de una desviación excesiva. Thanos perdona la vida de Tolau, ya que entiende que al desviante no le queda mucho tiempo y no quiere ser acusado de matar a alguien misericordiosamente. Tolau se derrumba en los brazos de su amada Thena; ella piensa que podrá quedarse con él pase lo que pase. Pero tan pronto como llega al punto de desviación excesiva, ella se ve obligada a matarlo. Una triste manera de despedir a uno de los personajes más interesantes de las páginas de los Eternos.

Iron Man, Namor & Captain Marvel

Mientras Thanos tortura a Phastos, el resto de los Eternos intenta irrumpir en la nueva sede de los Vengadores, que resulta ser el cadáver de uno de los Celestiales. Piensan que podrían comunicarse con la esencia de los Celestiales para encontrar orientación en la situación en la que se encuentran ahora. Como parte de su subterfugio, Sersi decide cenar con Namor the Submariner, quien tiene una conversación bastante divertida al respecto con Iron Man y Captain Marvel.

Ajak

Como he dicho antes, Esad Ribić es realmente un maestro de la composición y la anatomía, tiene una comprensión única de lo que constituye una imagen dramática y es capaz de crear paisajes fascinantes; hombres y mujeres llenos de emoción y seriedad. Ribić tiene una sensibilidad sobresaliente que sólo algunos de los nombres más importantes del pasado compartieron, es en muchos sentidos un discípulo de Frank Frazetta. El único problema con Ribić es que probablemente le toma bastante tiempo producir un arte tan grandioso y debido a que Eternals es una serie mensual, no tuvo tiempo de ponerse al día. Es por eso que todos los one-shots adicionales no fueron ilustrados por él, y aquí los números 9 y 11 son de Guiu Villanova, quien es un hábil dibujante y entintador pero que carece de toda la grandiosidad de Ribić. Finalmente, vemos el enfrentamiento entre los Vengadores y los Eternos que no lograron infiltrarse subrepticiamente en su base.

Avengers versus Eternals

Debido a las limitaciones de tiempo, podemos ver cómo los últimos números, especialmente el número 12, se sienten un poco apresurados en comparación con los anteriores. Eso es comprensible porque sabemos que el tiempo apremia y los cómics deben publicarse mensualmente, pero desearía que le hubieran dado a Ribić todo el tiempo que necesitaba, incluso si eso significaba esperar meses adicionales para que saliera el cómic. En la conclusión vemos cómo los Eternos y los Vengadores están peleando entre sí; es difícil adivinar quién podría ganar ya que están igualados, pero al final, por supuesto, deciden dejar de pelear.

Ikaris versus Thanos

Thanos es inmensamente poderoso, pero después de haber sido traicionado por Druid, termina derrotado y, finalmente, Druid se convierte en el Primer Eterno, el gobernante absoluto de los Eternos. Eternals # 3 & 4 - Kieron Gillen & Esad Ribić

Of course we know that Jack Kirby was the artist responsible for the creation of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and basically almost the entire Marvel Universe. However, in all of these situations he was working with a writer, either Joe Simon or Stan Lee. It wasn’t until when he was finally allowed to write and draw his own stories, and the result was New Gods for DC Comics and the Eternals for Marvel. Kirby also introduced the Celestials, who created both the Eternals and the Deviants. 

Esad Ribic

In the third chapter of “Only Death is Eternal” (originally published in Eternals # 3, May 2021), Thena, described as “a goddess in Hell”, wakes up next to her lover, a Deviant, in the city of Lemuria. An invincible warrior, Thena also seems to have an insatiable appetite for sexual encounters, and she always prefer different species, so instead of turning to her fellow Eternals, she’d rather mingle with humans or Deviants or what have you. Esad Ribić’s design of Lemuria seems to come from our dreams, but it also seems to come from our past. Lemuria is a combination of how we imagine mythical cities like Atlantis, that belong to the past, and how we dream about new and fantastic cities. With an extraordinary splash page, Ribić shows us how impressive Lemuria is. 

Esad Ribic

It’s also in this third chapter that we see Toby Robson, an ordinary teenager that has been deemed worthy of Ikaris’s attention. According to the Eternal, Toby might die soon, but that won’t happen if Ikaris offers to protect him. Ikaris also enlists Sprite as Toby’s personal bodyguard. In a casual conversation between the Eternal and the parents, the idea of Ikaris simply being present there is what might actually endanger Toby is something that will pay off in the end of the miniseries, but not in the usual way of a villain attacking a hero, and civilians getting hurt in the process. Finally, we get to see the interactions between Thena and Sersi. 

Thena

As powerful as the interior art is, the painted covers by Ribić are even more exquisite. The cover for issue # 3 presents a magnificent composition, with Sprite, Thena and Sersi looking at us with determination, while Thena’s frightened deviant lover absconds, almost camouflaging in the background, which is the mythic city of Lemuria. The cover for issue # 4 is also a fine example of design, balance and proportions; beautifully executed and with a special eye for details, once again Ribić proves to be an amazing artist. 

Lemuria

In the fourth chapter of “Only Death is Eternal” (Eternals # 4, June 2021) we appreciate even more the scope of Gillen’s intentions as a writer, and especially his impressive world-building abilities. In addition to the main storyline, Gillen is providing us, the readers, with a lot of information about the different groups of Eternals, their cities, their past and so on. Here we also see Phastos attempting to repair the Celestial machine, the one that has existed for millennia and that is responsible for the resurrection of the Eternals. 

Ikaris & Toby Robson

Of course, one of my favorite moments is the one in which we see Sprite taking the school bus with Toby Robson. The two of them talk, and as a way of reassuring Toby that he is well protected, Sprite points out to the sky; and in a magnificent panel we see Ikaris hovering over the city. But what is so special about this boy that requires the protection of not one but two of the most powerful Eternals? That question will be answered in the final issue of this story-arc.

El diseño de Esad Ribić de Lemuria parece provenir de nuestros sueños, pero también parece provenir de nuestro pasado. Lemuria es una combinación de cómo imaginamos ciudades míticas como la Atlántida, que pertenecen al pasado, y cómo soñamos con ciudades nuevas y fantásticas. Con una página completa extraordinaria, Ribić nos muestra lo impresionante que es Lemuria.

deviants / desviantes

También es en este tercer capítulo donde vemos a Toby Robson, un adolescente común y corriente que ha sido considerado digno de la atención de Ikaris. Según el Eterno, Toby podría morir pronto, pero eso no sucederá si Ikaris le ofrece protegerlo. Ikaris también recluta a Sprite como guardaespaldas personal de Toby. En una conversación casual entre el Eterno y los padres, la idea de que Ikaris simplemente esté presente allí es lo que realmente podría poner en peligro a Toby; algo que dará frutos al final de la miniserie, pero no de la forma habitual en la que un villano ataca a un héroe y los civiles resultan heridos en el proceso. Finalmente, podemos ver las interacciones entre Thena y Sersi.

Druig

Por poderoso que sea el arte interior, las portadas pintadas a mano por Ribić son aún más exquisitas. La portada del número 3 presenta una composición magnífica, con Sprite, Thena y Sersi mirándonos con determinación, mientras el asustado amante desviante de Thena se escapa, casi camuflándose en el fondo, que es la mítica ciudad de Lemuria. La portada del número 4 también es un buen ejemplo de diseño, equilibrio y proporciones; bellamente ejecutada, y con un ojo especial para los detalles, una vez más Ribić demuestra ser un artista increíble. 

Phastos

En el cuarto capítulo de “Sólo la muerte es eterna” (Eternals # 4, junio del 2021) apreciamos aún más el alcance de las intenciones de Gillen como escritor, y especialmente sus impresionantes habilidades para construir mundos. Además de la historia principal, Gillen nos proporciona a nosotros, los lectores, mucha información sobre los diferentes grupos de Eternals, sus ciudades, su pasado, etc. Aquí también vemos a Phastos intentando reparar la máquina Celestial, la que existe desde hace milenios y que es responsable de la resurrección de los Eternos. 

Toby Robson, Sprite & Ikaris

Por supuesto, uno de mis momentos favoritos es aquel en el que vemos a Sprite tomando el autobús escolar con Toby Robson. Los dos hablan, y como una forma de asegurarle a Toby que está bien protegido, Sprite señala al cielo; y en una magnífica viñeta vemos a Ikaris sobrevolando la ciudad. Pero, ¿qué tiene de especial este chico que requiere la protección no de uno sino de dos de los Eternos más poderosos? Esa pregunta será respondida en el número final de este arco argumental.
