Clone # 1-3 - David Schulner & Juan José Ryp

It’s not entirely unusual to find screenwriters working in the comic book industry, and they usually produce remarkable runs (Joss Whedon in Astonishing X-Men, Allan Heinberg in Young Avengers, J M Straczynski in Thor, etc.). In Skybound’s new ongoing, “Clone” the writer is David Schulner, famous for his work in TV series like “Once and Again”, “Everwood” and “Desperate Housewives”. I’ve always been a fan of “Once and Again” (and it’s in this drama that I first saw actress Evan Rachel Wood, and ever since then I’ve been talking about her in this blog), I loved “Everwood” and most emphatically the protagonist’s passion for comic books (Gregory Smith and the rest of the cast were so good in this series) and I felt touched and captivated by the women of Wisteria Lane in “Desperate Housewives”. So clearly, when I saw that David Schulner was behind Clone I knew had to buy it. I just had to.

As the title suggests, we’re dealing with cloning here. The protagonist is a clone who is being hunted by other clones. Who is the original man? And why are all these clones killing each other? In the first three issues, we see the implications of cloning: all the moral dilemmas, the political conflicts and changes this technological breakthrough might cause on our society. Certainly, David Schulner has found the way to bring a classic sci-fi concept into today’s world. 

Of course, this series wouldn’t be the same if not for Juan José Ryp. He is a brilliant Spanish artist, and he combines two very unique influences. On one hand he follows in the footsteps of painters from the Pointillism movement (which was a result of Postimpressionism), the Pointillism (also called divisionism) requires the constant use of little dots, similar to the ones we see in every drawing of Juan José Ryp. On the other hand, Ryp is clearly a huge fan of Geof Darrow, an artist that can fit thousands of details in a single page. 

Just a look at the wraparound cover of the first issue is a good indication of the amount of details we can find in Ryp’s work, from references to Image’s series “Li’l Depressed Boy”, to several fictitious brands that are references to real companies and so on. If we pay attention to the hundreds of people that appear on the cover, we’ll see that each one of them is doing something, either walking the dog, carrying a bag of groceries, speaking on the phone, etc., and they all seem to have different personalities and attitudes. 

The interior art is also great, the action sequences are amazing, and the detailed backgrounds add a very rich sense of complexity. One of my favorite pages shows the protagonist looking down into a pile of bodies, I have counted around 65 of them, all in different positions, all with tragic gestures. The cover of issue # 3 shows the cloned corpses with great dynamism and visual strength. As usual Image and Skybound are producing some of the best comics on the stands right now. Good for that.

No es para nada inusual encontrar a guionistas de televisión trabajando en la industria del cómic, y por lo general producen trabajos memorables (Joss Whedon en "Astonishing X-Men", Allan Heinberg en "Young Avengers", J M Straczynski en “Thor”, etc.). En la nueva colección de Skybound, “Clone” el escritor es David Schulner, famoso por su trabajo en series de televisión como “Once and Again”, “Everwood” y “Desperate Housewives”. Siempre he sido fan de “Once and Again” (y es en este drama donde vi por primera vez a la actriz Evan Rachel Wood, y desde entonces he estado hablando sobre ella en este blog), me encantó “Everwood” y hago especial énfasis en la pasión por los cómics del protagonista (Gregory Smith y el resto del elenco hicieron una gran labor en esta serie) y me sentí conmovido y cautivado por las mujeres de Wisteria Lane en “Desperate Housewives”. Así que, cuando vi que David Schulner estaba detrás de "Clone" sabía que tenía comprarlo. De todas maneras.

Como el título sugiere, aquí lo principal es la clonación. El protagonista es un clon que es cazado por otros clones. ¿Quién es el original? ¿Y por qué todos estos clones están matándose entre sí? En los primeros tres números, vemos lo que implica la clonación: todos los dilemas morales, los conflictos políticos y los cambios que este avance tecnológico puede ocasionar en nuestra sociedad. David Schulner, por cierto, ha encontrado la forma de traer un concepto clásico de la ciencia ficción al mundo de hoy. 

Por supuesto, esta serie no sería lo mismo si no fuera por Juan José Ryp. Él es un brillante artista español, y combina dos influencias únicas. Por un lado sigue los pasos de los pintores del movimiento del puntillismo (que fue un resultado del post-impresionismo), el puntillismo (también llamado divisionismo) requiere el uso constante de pequeños puntos, similares a los que vemos en cada dibujo de Juan José Ryp. Por otro lado, es claro que Ryp es un gran fan de Geof Darrow, un artista que puede encajar miles de detalles en una sola página.

Sólo un vistazo a la portada doble del primer número es una buena indicación de la cantidad de detalles que encontramos en el trabajo de Ryp, desde referencias a otros cómics de Image, “Li’l Depressed Boy”, hasta varias marcas ficticias que hacen referencia a compañías reales. Si prestamos atención al centenar de personas que aparecen en la portada, veremos que todos están haciendo algo, ya sea paseando al perro, cargando una bolsa de abarrotes, hablando por teléfono, etc. y todos parece tener personalidades y actitudes diferentes.  

El arte interior también es grandioso, las escenas de acción son asombrosas, y los fondos detallados añaden un sentido muy rico de complejidad. Una de mis páginas favoritas nos muestra al protagonista mirando un montículo de cadáveres, he contado alrededor de 65 cuerpos, todos en posiciones distintas, todos con gestos trágicos. La portada del # 3 nos muestra los cadáveres de los clones con un gran dinamismo y mucha fortaleza visual. Como siempre, Image y Skybound están produciendo algunos de los mejores cómics del momento. Bien por ello.

The Secret Service # 5 - Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons

In the first issue of “The Secret Service”, we saw a paramilitary group kidnapping Mark Hammill (famous for his role as Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy). In subsequent issues, several Hollywood superstars are also captured, and neither Jack nor Gary can figure out why anyone would go through all these problems without asking for a ransom afterwards.

Jack, the best spy of the British Crown, knows that the next in the list is Ridley Scott, a famous filmmaker and the creator of the “Alien” franchise, a well-known cultural icon. So what can be the link between Mark Hammill, Ridley Scott and the other superstars that have vanished from the face of the Earth? The answer, with the right touch of irreverence (something that we’ve all come to expect from the Irish writer) is funny and surprising. But don’t worry, I won’t spoil it here.

The Gary from this issue is completely different from the Gary we met on issue # 1. The young man has grown up, he is no longer the immature kid that had a bad relationship with his mother. Things have changed. But embracing his uncle Jack as a fatherly figure might also mean that mourning his death won’t be easy. In a violent ambush, Jack is murdered by the henchmen of the man behind the kidnappings, a man who has a secret plan to destroy the lives of 5 billion people in a matter of hours.
  

Dave Gibbons has some very good pages here: the sex scene between Jack and the villain’s wife is handled with subtlety, and the moment of Jack’s death is depicted with the necessary level of violence. With only one issue to go, there are many questions and mysteries that still need to be solved. I’m sure the last chapter will be quite memorable.

En el primer ejemplar de "El servicio secreto", vimos a un grupo paramilitar que había secuestrado a Mark Hammill (famoso por su rol como Luke Skywalker en la trilogía original de “La guerra de las galaxias”). En números subsiguientes, varias súper-estrellas de Hollywood son apresadas, y ni Jack ni Gary pueden adivinar por qué alguien raptaría a estas personas sin pedir un rescate después. 

Jack, el mejor espía de la Corona Británica, sabe que el próximo en la lista es Ridley Scott, un famoso cineasta y el creador de la franquicia de “Alien”, un conocido ícono cultural. Así que ¿cuál puede ser el vínculo entre Mark Hammill, Ridley Scott y otras súper-estrellas que se han desvanecido de la faz de la Tierra? La respuesta, con el toque justo de irreverencia (algo que todos esperamos del escritor irlandés) es divertida y sorprendente. Pero no se preocupen, no planeo arruinar la sorpresa.

El Gary de este número es completamente diferente del Gary que conocimos en el # 1. El joven ha crecido, ya no es un chiquillo inmaduro que tenía una mala relación con su madre. Las cosas han cambiado. Pero tener al tío Jack como una figura paterna también significa que el luto por su muerte no será fácil. En una violenta emboscada, Jack es asesinado por los secuaces del hombre detrás de los secuestros, un hombre que tiene un plan secreto para destruir las vidas de 5 billones de personas en cuestión de horas. 

Dave Gibbons tiene algunas páginas muy buenas aquí: la escena de sexo entre Jack y la esposa del villano es manejada con sutileza, y el momento de la muerte de Jack es retratado con el nivel de violencia necesario. En el próximo número, el último, las preguntas y los misterios serán resueltos. De manera memorable, estoy seguro.

Fashion Beast # 5 - Alan Moore & Facundo Percio

Is it hard for Doll to be the most famous supermodel? Not at all, she’s quite happy with her job. And she’s quite proud of herself and her newfound influence over Celestine’s employees. Only Tomboy seems a bit resentful. Another confrontation between them is inevitable, and when it takes place, the Patron himself must intervene.

Doll is like an actress that changes her wardrobe every hour. We rarely think about acting and its theatrical connotation, but to act means to have a discourse of “acts” that maintains associative semantic meanings. We should also remember the phenomenological theory of “acts,” as explained by Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and George Herbert Mead: social agents constitute the mundane way in which reality exists, through language, gesture, and all manner of symbolic social sign, they are the shapers of society.

Doll does what a model / actress must do, Tomboy does what a clothes designer must do, the employees of Celestine carry out their duties with diligence. They all do specific things. To do, to dramatize, to reproduce, these seem to be the foundation of the performative acts that define gender. This doing of gender allows people to be exterior, surfaced, open to the perception of others. This corporality clearly manifests a set of strategies or what Sartre would refer as a style of being or Foucault as “a stylistics of existence”. And what is more important in fashion than style?

This style is the product of a certain history, and that history affects and constrains possibilities. We could consider gender, for instance, as a corporeal style, an “act,” as it were, which is both intentional and performative, where “performative” itself carries the double-meaning of “dramatic” and “non-referential”. Certainly, Tomboy adjusts well to this classification. Let’s remember that he has acted like a girl who wants to be a boy, all her masculine poses and her manly outfits are part of that desire of become something else. But in this chapter something happens that might suggest that Tomboy has been a boy all along, just like Doll had been a girl from the beginning. Their true sexuality, however, doesn’t undermine in the least their attempts to cross-dress, to destroy the barriers of society and embrace the transgendered style that has permeated the pages of Fashion Beast since the opening installment.

Rara vez pensamos en la actuación y en su connotación teatral, pero actuar significa tener un discurso de "actos" que mantiene significados semánticos asociativos. Esta acción de género les permite a las personas ser exteriores, salir a la superficie, abrirse a la percepción de otros. Esta corporalidad se manifiesta claramente en un conjunto de estrategias a las que Sartre se refería como un estilo de ser o Foucault como una "estilística de la existencia". ¿Y qué es más importante en la moda que el estilo?

Este estilo es producto de una cierta historia, y esa historia afecta y constriñe las posibilidades. Podríamos considerar el género, por ejemplo, como un estilo corporal, un "acto" que es al mismo tiempo intencional y performativo, donde los "performativo" alberga el doble significado de "dramático" y "no-referencial". Ciertamente, Tomboy se ajusta bien a esta clasificación. Recordemos que él ha actuado como una chica que quiere ser un chico, todas sus poses masculinas y sus atuendos varoniles son parte de ese deseo de convertirse en alguien más. Pero en este capítulo algo sugiere que Tomboy ha sido un muchacho desde un inicio, al igual que Doll siempre fue una chica. Su verdadera sexualidad, sin embargo, no socava en lo más mínimo sus intentos por travestirse, por destruir las barreras de la sociedad y asumir el estilo transgénero que ha permeado las páginas de "Fashion Beast" desde la primera entrega.

I jumped aboard Runaways in the middle of the second series. I wanted to get the whole first series in individual issues but it wasn’t so easy for me in those days, when I was just learning how to buy stuff online. Then in 2007 I decided to buy the first three digests (they were irresistibly cheap). 

Back then I didn’t know where to find back issues of Runways (first series), so I thought what the hell, I’ll buy the three digests which cost me, if I recall correctly, 3.99 bucks each (except the third one which was 4.79). So for 12 bucks I read 18 issues of BKV goodness.

Of course, I had always heard good things about Brian K. Vaughan; in 2007 I was still waiting for him to finish his run on Y the Last Man to buy it all at once. Anyway, something I especially enjoyed in the first Runaways issue was the way Vaughan introduced the characters: they are a group of kids you can really relate to and that are probably going to remind you of somebody you know in real life. 

I liked Chase from the beginning, he’s always been one of my favorites. I always remember him saying “please let it be beer”, I thought that could be me saying “please let it be whisky, let it be whisky”; I loved the humor and all the jokes. I absolutely loved Runaways. And I know one day I must review all of it.

Cynthia Capriata es la primera artista en exponer en Dédalo este 2013, su muestra titulada "Diálogos visuales: 80 Ganeshas" estuvo muy concurrida e incluso atrajo la atención de las cámaras de Polizontes, divertido programa de Plus TV. Capriata rescata los mandalas y recurre a la figura de Ganesha, el dios elefante hindú, para crear imágenes muy sugerentes, en las que combina diversas técnicas: acuarela, crayón, óleo, etc. Sin duda, un colorido festín visual que nos recuerda la esencia de la India.  

Aunque con algunos minutos de atraso, igual llegué a tiempo para encontrarme con Max Maradiegue, y en el transcurso de la noche saludamos y hablamos brevemente con María Elena Fernández, Eduardo Lores, Paola Tejada y Marcos Palacios, y también conversamos sobre literatura beatnik y redes sociales con Pedro Casusol y Sebastián Lores. Creo que esta ha sido una de las pocas veces en que tomé casi la misma cantidad de chilcanos que Max, y es que yo tenía una importante cita en la revista COSAS al día siguiente. 

De todos modos, eso no nos impidió pasar una noche muy divertida, que se prolongó no hasta altas horas de la madrugada pero sí, casi, hasta altas horas de la medianoche. Sin duda, el momento más ameno de la semana.

La muestra permanecerá abierta al público durante hasta fines de mes, les recomiendo que se den una vuelta por Dédalo y la vean.

America’s Got Powers # 4 - Jonathan Ross & Bryan Hitch

Everyone believed Tommy Watts was Earth’s most powerful teenager. They were wrong. Tommy Watts has but one ability: to give powers to those who never had them. After being kidnapped by a group of young renegades, one of his captors hits him over and over again, in a futile attempt to awaken his powers. None of them knows that Tommy can’t give powers to those who already have them, he can only affect regular human beings.

Obviously, those in charge of America’s Got Powers can’t afford to lose someone as emblematic as Tommy, and they send an army of humans and a group of supermen to track him down. Although heavily action-oriented, Jonathan Ross doesn’t forget to include the elements that set this miniseries apart from regular superhero titles. The young renegades and Tommy are labeled as terrorists by the press. What is the origin of that this impasse between youth and authority?

The group of power (the adults) wants to supervise the development of the adolescents identity. Nonetheless, feelings of fraudulence, desire for competency and mastery, and the vacillation between identification and individuation are common to both supervisor and adolescent. That is the source of the plot threads we find in America’s Got Powers: a paranoid fear (justified in this case), brutal competition between teens (sometimes to the death), and the search of one’s own identity. 

Bryan Hitch once again includes some truly great double page spreads, one of my favorites is the attack of several paladins (robots designed to neutralize a superhuman) on a an unsuspecting child; the other one shows us the army of supermen that are now in pursuit of Tommy, this is a very dynamic and colorful illustration. Hitch also does an amazing job with Tommy’s face, bruised and bleeding profusely. Finally, the confrontation between the young rebels and the conservative heroes is top notch.

Todos creían que Tommy Watts era el adolescente más poderoso de la Tierra. Estaban equivocados. Tommy Watts tiene una sola habilidad: darle poderes a quienes nunca los tuvieron. Después de ser secuestrado por un grupo de jóvenes renegados, uno de sus captores lo golpea una y otra vez, en un fútil intento de activar sus poderes. Ninguno de ellos sabe que Tommy no puede darle poderes a quienes ya son poderosos, él sólo puede afectar a los seres humanos normales.

Obviamente, los que están a cargo de "America’s Got Powers" no pueden darse el lujo de perder a alguien tan emblemático como Tommy, y envían un ejército de humanos y un grupo de superhombres para rastrearlo. Aunque hay mucha acción, Jonathan Ross no olvida incluir elementos que colocan esta serie por encima de los títulos heroicos comunes. Los jóvenes renegados y Tommy son calificados como terroristas por la prensa. ¿Cuál es el origen de este impasse entre la juventud y la autoridad?

El grupo de poder (los adultos) quiere supervisar el desarrollo de la identidad de los adolescentes. No obstante, los sentimientos de fraudulencia, el deseo de la competencia y el dominio, y la vacilación entre la identificación y la individuación son comunes tanto en el supervisor como en el adolescente. Este es el origen de los hilos argumentales de America’s Got Powers: un miedo paranoico (justificado en este caso), competencia brutal entre los jóvenes (a veces hasta la muerte) y la búsqueda de la identidad propia.

Bryan Hitch una vez más incluye algunas páginas dobles de primer nivel, una de mis favoritas es el ataque de varios paladines (robots diseñados para neutralizar a un súper-humano) a un niño inocente; la otra muestra al ejército de superhombres que están buscando a Tommy, esta es una ilustración muy dinámica y colorida. Hitch también hace un asombroso trabajo con el golpeado rostro de Tommy, que sangra profusamente. Finalmente, la confrontación entre los jóvenes rebeldes y los héroes conservadores es tremenda.

January comic books / cómics de enero

In the past I had over 20 comics to talk about, but this time I only have a few. But what I lack in quantity I more than make up for in quality. First we have a couple of very interesting Image ongoings: Great Pacific and Clone, and also the beginning of a very promising miniseries: Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth. The fifth installments of Fashion Beast and Secret Service were quite good, but the crown’s jewel is, of course, the third trade paperback of Alan Moore’ Swamp Thing. I still haven’t finished reviewing December comics, will I have enough time to review all of this before I get my February package? I also decided to dedicate a little drawing (accompanied by my signature) for one of my best friends.

Primero tenemos un de interesantes series de Image: Great Pacific y Clone, y también el comienzo de una muy prometedora miniserie: Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth. La quinta entrega de Fashion Beast y Secret Service estuvieron muy bien pero, la joya de la corona, por supuesto, es el tercer tomo de Swamp Thing de Alan Moore. Todavía no he terminado de reseñar los cómics de diciembre, ¿tendré tiempo de reseñar todo este antes de que llegue mi paquete de febrero? También decidí dedicarle un dibujito (acompañado de mi firma) a uno de mis mejores amigos.

Día del pisco sour

Espero que todos hayan disfrutado del día del pisco sour. Durante este fin de semana se realizaron diversas actividades en todo Lima, yo por ser Barranquino, participé solamente de la inauguración del festival del Pisco en el Museo Pedro de Osma de Barranco.

Sin duda, fue un evento bastante simpático en donde uno se podía encontrar con vecinos y viejos conocidos. Además del trago insignia, en esta ocasión todos los concurrentes pudieron disfrutar de una gran variedad de bocadillos y piqueos.

No obstante, el Wong del Bulevar de Asia decepcionó a todos sus clientes, y es que este ha sido el primer año en el que no prepararon ningún evento para celebrar el día del pisco sour. En el 2012, por ejemplo, detecté algunas falencias que comenté aquí en el blog pero suponía que al año siguiente todo mejoraría, al final Wong ha optado por la inactividad total. Una lástima. 

De todas maneras, disfruté mi fin de semana en la playa y no dejé que la desidia del supermercado me amargara la vida. De hecho, preparé maracuyá sour y chilcanos en abundancia desde el viernes en la noche hasta el domingo a la hora del almuerzo.

Y para hablar un poco de cómics los dejo con un ejemplar autografiado que compró uno de mis amigos. Además de mi firma, este cómic también incluye un dibujo mío hecho en la contracarátula con tinta china, a ver qué les parece (está al lado de la mujer de armadura a colores).

January films / películas de enero

What can be better than celebrate the beginning of the year with a bunch of great movies? As usual, I’ll start with the ones you’ve probably seen or heard of. I saw Life of Pi (2012), and I thought it was quite an engaging all-ages adventure, it certainly has some very nice moments and it’s reassuring to see that director Ang Lee is so versatile. The Impossible (2012) directed by Juan Antonio Bayona is based on a real life event, the flooding of Thailand’s coast. This is the story of a family of survivors doing everything they humanly can to remain alive and also to be reunited. Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland are the protagonists. The Impossible will shock you and keep you alert.

The swine flu caused massed hysteria and panic a few years ago, and Steven Soderbergh takes this concept to the limit in Contagion (2011), a lethal disease is quickly infecting thousands of people worldwide, and unless a cure is prepared millions will die. The cast includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and many other talented actors. I certainly enjoyed it. 

Mr. Nobody (2009) was written and directed by Jaco Van Dormael, truly a science fiction masterpiece, this is a coherent narrative that includes alternate realities, time travel and butterfly effect. Jared Leto is over a hundred years old, he lives in a society in which no one ever dies of natural causes, he will be the last human that will die of old age. And he remembers his multiple pasts, sometimes he marries Sarah Polley, others Diane Kruger, others an Asian woman, sometimes he has children, sometimes he doesn’t, and at the same time he remembers a key moment in his life, the separation of his parents and how he was forced to make an impossible choice: stay with his father or go with his mother. When he is a teenager (played by Toby Regbo, who was the young Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) he is compelled to make the most important decision: who to fall in love with. Definitely one of the best sci-fi productions I’ve encountered in years, I highly recommend it.

If you’re familiar with this blog then you already know that I am a huge Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan. And this month I was lucky enough to see 50/50 (2011) directed by Jonathan Levine. Here Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a young man who suddenly finds out that he has cancer. There is a 50% probability that he will survive, and now he must reevaluate his life, that includes his unhealthy relationship with a selfish girlfriend and his problems with his neurotic mother, Anjelica Huston. Instead of a full-fledged drama, Levine gives us a bittersweet comedy, with intense moments that reminds us the fragility of life. In “Killshot” (2008), Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a young delinquent who gets “recruited” by professional killer Mickey Rourke, together they will have to murder Thomas Jane and Diane Lane. That is the premise of Killshot, a riveting tale of loss, violence and death. I have often said that Joseph Gordon-Levitt always chooses his projects wisely, and these two films certainly prove my point.

Hooligans (2005) is starred by two of my favorite actors Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam. Famous for his role as Frodo, Elijah Wood is now a confused young man who finds in a hooligan band led by Charlie Hunnam a second home. The constant fights and the violence will eventually escalate, and the consequences will be quite serious. The Girl (2012) is based on the life of Alfred Hitchcock (Toby Jones) and the actress he chose for “The Birds” (Sienna Miller). What happened in the set of “The Birds”? What were the secrets behind the filming of this classic? In The Girl we get to see a sexually obsessed Hitchcock and a young woman tempted by success and fame, but at the same time repulsed by the constant insinuations of a dirty old man.

I guess a lot of people must have a fascination for haunted houses, but I find that horror subgenre particularly tedious. The Presence (2010) is an unnecessarily slow movie about a woman, Mira Sorvino, who moves temporarily into a haunted house, one of the ghosts is Shane West. It has some interesting moments, but overall is a bit of a letdown. Some movies have plot holes, but Cold Creek Manor (2003) seems like a gigantic plot hole that devours anything slightly interesting about the concept of a family settling in a house with “bad history”. The cast is great (Dennis Quaid, Sharon Stone, Juliette Lewis, Kristen Stewart) but the final result is very anticlimactic.

Trailer Park of Terror (2008) is based on the comic book of the same title and it is by far the best horror movie I’ve seen in months. This is a haunted trailer park, so to speak, and every time an unlucky car stops by, the dead arise, to reprise their old roles. There is a lot of blood, severed heads, broken bones and dismemberment, but everything works flawlessly because the story is very original and makes perfect sense. The actors are Ricky Mabe, Cody McMains (who explored his comedic side in “Not Another Teen Movie”) and Ryan Carnes (famous for his role as a heterosexual who engages in homosexual practices in “Eating Out”). 

I trust in David Hare, he is one of the best Hollywood writers, and when I found out that My Zinc Bed (2008) was based on one of his theater plays I knew I had to see it. And it was so great. The characters are fascinating, and their conflicts very intense. Uma Thurman and Jonathan Pryce are alcoholics, and they’re both under the guidance of multimillionaire Paddy Considine. What are the consequences of alcoholism? What is the connection between writers and alcohol? What does addiction mean for a rich man? There are so many ideas here, and so many memorable moments. 

Love & Distrust (2010) is a series of short films that revolve around love and distrust, some are better than others, personally I enjoyed the segments starred by Robert Downey Jr. and James Franco (the one with Robert Pattinson is a bit substandard). Bernard and Doris (2006) tells the true story of Doris Duke, a millionaire (Susan Sarandon) who one day hires Ralph Fiennes as her butler. Through the years, true friendship flourishes between a woman who has it all and a gay man who can’t have what he wants. 

Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994) is a masterpiece and I’m sure hundreds of people have analyzed it and studied it, so I’ll just say that I loved it. I can’t believe it took me so long to see it but at least I managed to do so in a big screen. John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken and Harvey Keitel give some of their best performances in this movie that celebrates craziness and weirdness, in a perfect cocktail of originality and superb humor. This goes in my personal top 50, and it deserves a place in your list too. A must see.

I consider Xavier Dolan the best filmmaker of his generation. With extraordinary films like “J’ai tué ma mère” and “Les amours imaginaires” he has proven that he might be young but he sure has a lot of talent. Last year he directed Laurence Anyways (2012), a thought-provoking film about a transsexual. Surely a difficult subject, Dolan exploits the sex change of his protagonist in a story that takes place throughout several years. Finally, I saw Il Casanova di Federico Fellini (1976), the protagonist is Donald Sutherland (Casanova), a man famous for his sexual prowess and his infallible seduction techniques. Fellini reconstructs the Venezia of the 18th century and shows us a very human and vulnerable Casanova, the film begins with the protagonist as a young man full of ambitions and ends with him ruined and sick, with nothing but the good memories of his glorious years and the bitter taste of unfulfilled promises. The last scene, in which he is ridiculed in the court of a German count is heartbreaking. Fellini includes many satirical references and a lot of humor in his erotic scene, but that doesn’t take away the drama of the last sequences. A masterpiece.

¿Qué puede ser mejor que celebrar el comienzo del año con un montón de buenas películas? Como siempre, empezaré con las que probablemente ya han visto. Vi "Life of Pi" (2012), y pienso que es una atrapante aventura para todo público, por cierto, tiene momentos muy bien logrados, y reconforta ver la versatilidad de Ang Lee, el director. "The Impossible" (2012) es dirigida por Juan Antonio Bayona y se basa en un caso de la vida real, la inundación de la costa de Tailandia. Esta es la historia de una familia de sobrevivientes que hacen todo lo que humanamente pueden hacer para seguir con vida y reencontrarse. Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor y Tom Holland son los protagonistas. "The Impossible" los impactará y los mantendrá alertas.

Definitivamente, una de las mejores producciones de ciencia ficción que he podido encontrar en años, de todas maneras la recomiendo.

Supongo que a muchos les debe fascinar las casas habitadas por almas en pena, pero para mí este es uno de los subgéneros de terror más tediosos. "The Presence" (2010) es una película innecesariamente lenta sobre una mujer, Mira Sorvino, que se muda temporalmente a una casa con fantasmas, uno de ellos es Shane West. Tiene algunos momentos interesantes, pero en conjunto es un poco decepcionante. Algunas películas tienen huecos argumentales, pero "Cold Creek Manor" (2003) parece ser un gigantesco hueco argumental que se traga todo lo que pueda ser remotamente interesante sobre el concepto de una familia que se instala en una casa con "mala historia". El elenco es muy bueno (Dennis Quaid, Sharon Stone, Juliette Lewis, Kristen Stewart) pero el resultado final es muy anticlimático.

"Trailer Park of Terror" (2008) se basa en un cómic del mismo título y es de lejos la mejor película de terror que he visto en meses. Este es un trailer park con almas en pena, y cada vez que un desafortunado vehículo se detiene, los muertos despiertan para interpretar viejos roles. Hay mucha sangre, cabezas cercenadas, huesos 
rotos y destripamientos pero todo funciona a la perfección porque la historia es muy original y tiene sentido. Los actores son Ricky Mabe, Cody McMains (que exploró su lado cómico en “Not Another Teen Movie”) y Ryan Carnes (famoso por su rol como un  heterosexual que realiza actividades homosexuales en “Eating Out”).

Hay tantas ideas aquí, y tantos momentos memorables. 

"Love & Distrust" (2010) es una serie de corto-metrajes sobre el amor y la descon-fianza, algunos son mejores que otros, personal-mente disfruté de los segmentos protago-nizados por Robert Downey Jr. y James Franco (el de Robert Pattinson es un poco bajetón). "Pulp Fiction" (1994) de Quentin Tarantino es una obra maestra y estoy seguro que centenares de personas la han analizado y estudiado, así que sólo diré que me encantó. No puedo creer que me demoré tanto en verla, pero por lo menos la vi en pantalla grande. John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken y Harvey Keitel tienen roles memorables en esta película que celebra la locura y la rareza, en un perfecto cóctel de originalidad y humor soberbio. Ya ganó un sitial en mi top 50 personal, y merece un lugar en el vuestro. Debe ser vista.

Fellini reconstruye la Venecia del siglo XXVIII y nos muestra a un Casanova muy humano y vulnerable, el film empieza con el protagonista como un joven lleno de ambiciones y termina con él arruinado y enfermo, con nada excepto los buenos recuerdos de su etapa de gloria y el sabor amargo de las promesas incumplidas. En la última escena, se nos parte el corazón al ver cómo él es puesto en ridículo en la corte de un conde alemán. Fellini incluye muchas referencias satíricas y mucho humor en las escenas eróticas, pero eso no reduce el dramatismo de las últimas secuencias. Una obra maestra.

The Legend of Luther Strode # 1 - Justin Jordan, Tradd Moore & Felipe Sobreiro

A year ago, Justin Jordan wrote an extraordinarily witty and imaginative miniseries about a high school boy, Luther Strode, who was constantly bullied. Now, one way or another, we could all relate to that, not because we’ve been victims of bullying but because we have, at least, witnessed it. And that was the strength of “The Strange Talent of Luther Strode”, it made us reconnect with our high school past and the power fantasies that most teenagers develop. Because, when we can’t fight against bullying we use our imagination. Perhaps, we imagine ourselves stronger or faster… in our dreams we are always victorious.

In the previous miniseries, Luther Strode signed up for the Hercules Method (a brilliant parody of the Atlas Method) and, suddenly, he was indeed much stronger and faster than any other American teenager. In that miniseries Justin Jordan did what all good writers should do, he made us care for the protagonist and for his supporting cast: Petra (Luther’s romantic interest), Pete (Luther’s best friend), the Librarian, etc.

I have to admit I was a little bit worried about “The Legend of Luther Strode”. I knew it would no longer play with the concepts of teenage power fantasies versus adult power fantasies, the high school settings (and thus the bullying) would no longer be a part of the equation. And with the death of Pete, Luther’s mother and even the Librarian, there would be no supporting cast to be emotionally invested in. 

And yet, Justin once again shows his talent as an author. He gives us a true legend, a masked vigilante that applies a level of violence that automatically disqualifies him from being considered a superhero or a regular do-gooder. Before reading this first issue, my concern was that after the brilliant origin we would now get a simple story about a superhuman avenging the death of those most beloved to him. I’m glad to see that my worries were unfounded. Yes, this new volume is darker, even grittier, but it still retains all the creativity that made me a fan in the first place. Besides, and I swear I’m trying not to spoil anything, seeing Petra back was such a great cliffhanger.

Tradd Moore is again in charge on pencils and inks, and he delivers some of the most fascinating fighting sequences anyone could ask for. Hyper-violent, full of gore and unrelentingly brutal, Tradd’s pages are always a joy to look at. I particularly enjoyed (and please don’t consider me as a sadist for confessing this) the scenes in which Luther Strode blows a criminal’s head off, or the scene in which he cuts half of the face of another delinquent. Of course, Felipe Sobreiro also contributes with his amazing colors, always vivid, always great; this is a man who knows how to make the art shine. And shine it does. It’s official, “The Legend of Luther Strode” is one of the best Image’s new miniseries.

Luther Strode

Hace un año, Justin Jordan escribió una miniserie ingeniosa e imaginativa sobre un chico de secundaria, Luther Strode, que era víctima de abusos verbales y físicos. De un modo u otro, todos nos podíamos sentir identi-ficados con ello, no porque hayamos sido víctimas de ese tipo de abuso sino porque hemos sido, al menos, testigos. Y esa era la fortaleza de “El extraño talento de Luther Strode”, nos reconectaba con nuestro pasado escolar y con las fantasías de poder que desarrolla la mayoría de adolescentes. Porque, cuando no podemos pelear contra el abusivo usamos nuestra imaginación. Tal vez nos imaginamos más fuertes o más rápidos... en nuestros sueños siempre somos victoriosos.

En la miniserie anterior, Luther Strode se inscribió en el Método Hércules (una brillante parodia del Método Atlas) y, de repente, él era de hecho más fuerte y más rápido que cualquier otro adolescente norte-americano. En esa miniserie, Justin Jordan hizo lo que todos los buenos escritores deberían hacer, hizo que nos preocu-páramos por los personajes y por el elenco secundario: Petra (el interés romántico de Luther), Pete (el mejor amigo de Luther), el Bibliotecario, etc.

Debo admitir que estaba un poco preocupado con "La leyenda de Luther Strode". Sabía que ahora ya no se jugaría con los conceptos de las fantasías de poder adolescente versus las fantasías de poder adulto, el contexto de la secundaria (y de los 'abusivos') ya no formarían parte de la ecuación. Y con la muerte de Pete, la madre de Luther e incluso el Bibliotecario, ya no habría ningún elenco secundario que nos mantenga emocionados.

No obstante, Justin demuestra una vez más su talento como autor. Nos da una verdadera leyenda, un vigilante enmascarado que aplica un nivel de violencia que automá-ticamente lo descalifica de ser considerado como un súper-héroe o un bienhechor típico. Antes de leer este primer número, mi preocupación era que después del brillante origen ahora habría una simple historia sobre un súper-humano vengando la muerte de sus seres queridos. Me alegra ver que mis preocupaciones eran infundadas. Sí, este nuevo volumen es más oscuro, incluso más cruel, pero aún mantiene toda la creatividad inicial. Además, y prometo no arruinar sorpresas, ver a Petra de vuelta ha generado muchas expectativas.

Tradd Moore está de nuevo a cargo de los lápices y las tintas, y nos entrega algunas de las secuencias de pelea más fascinantes que podamos imaginar. Híper violento, lleno de sangre y brutalidad cruda, las páginas de Tradd son un verdadero disfrute. Particularmente, me encantaron (y por favor no me consideren como un sádico por confesar esto) las escenas en las que Luther Strode hace explotar la cabeza de un criminal, o la escena en la que corta por la mitad la cara de otro delincuente. Por supuesto, Felipe Sobreiro también contribuye con sus asombrosos colores, siempre vívidos, siempre grandiosos; este es un hombre que sabe cómo sacarle lustre al arte. Y lo hace relucir. Es oficial, "La leyenda de Luther Strode" es una de las mejores nuevas miniseries de Image.
