February comics / cómics de febrero

With almost 20 comics and 2 trade paperbacks I was afraid it would take me longer to finish reading everything. Anyway, against all odds my favorite comic of the month was Young Avengers # 1 and I’ll definitely write a review about it. The conclusion of the Hit-Girl miniseries was quite interesting, and the conclusion of Happy was very intense. I loved the third chapter of Witch Doctor, arguably the best Image miniseries right now. The first issue of Snapshot was a very pleasant surprise, Andy Diggle really manages to capture the environment of nerdiness that surrounds a comic book store, and creates in only a few pages a couple of really fascinating characters, plus a very intriguing mystery that involves mutilations and murders. Sandman and America’s Best Comics are two really great trades, including many stories by Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore, two of my most respected and admired writers ever. I haven't read Hellblazer in a while, the last issue I bought was # 250, and it was in the first DCBS package that arrived to Perú in 2010, the end of Vertigo's oldest series with issue # 300 certainly marks the end of an era. The conclusion is bitter and sad. So long John Constantine, you'll be missed. Finally, the February book I loved the most was Silver Surfer Parable, but I guess it doesn’t qualify as the “best of the month” since it was originally published in the late 80s. Still, it is Stan Lee and Moebius at their best. And now, without further ado, here are February comics. Which one of these would you like to see reviewed in length?

Con casi 20 cómics y 2 tomos recopilatorios tenía miedo de demorarme demasiado leyendo todo. En fin, contra todo pronóstico, mi cómic favorito del mes fue Young Avengers # 1 y de hecho le dedicaré una reseña completa. La conclusión de la miniserie de “Hit-Girl” fue muy interesante, y la conclusión de “Happy” fue muy intensa. Me encantó el tercer capítulo de “Witch Doctor”, tal vez la mejor miniserie de Image del momento. El primer ejemplar de “Snapshot” fue una muy agradable sorpresa, Andy Diggle se las arregla para capturar el ambiente nerd de una tienda de cómics, y crea sólo en unas pocas páginas un par de personajes más que fascinantes, además de un misterio que nos intriga, que involucra mutilaciones y asesinatos. “Sandman” y “America’s Best Comics” son dos tomos de primer nivel, que incluyen muchas historias de Neil Gaiman y Alan Moore, dos de mis más respetados y admirados escritores. No he leído Hellblazer en mucho tiempo, el último número que compré fue el # 250, y estuvo que el primer paquete de DCBS que llegó a Perú en el 2010, el fin de la serie más antigua de Vertigo con el ejemplar # 300 de hecho marca el fin de una era. La conclusión es amarga y triste. Hasta luego, John Constantine, serás extrañado. Por último, lo que más me gustó de febrero fue "Silver Surfer Parable", pero supongo que no califica como lo "mejor del mes" ya que la fecha original de publicación es de fines de los 80. Aún así, son Stan Lee y Moebius en su mejor momento. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, los dejo con los cómics de febrero. ¿Cuáles creen que deberían ser reseñados a conciencia?

I was watching Young Justice the other day, which I consider by far the best cartoon I've seen in over 15 years. And I remembered some of the guys that love postwhoring on message boards. We are like Kid Flashes or Impulses trying to outrun each other… or so it seems. But some of them were a bit confused about my avatar which, coincidentally, is the same one I use here.

I’m sure most people assume it is the Lord of Atlantis himself. Nothing illogical in that. Although, due to my age, I should have been closer to 90’s comics, here in Peru it was easier for me to get access to comic books published in Spain, however, for some reason, the only available stuff was from the 80s. So I am an expert of that era, not because I was born in a different date but because of, how should we put it, geographical accidents. It was like I had no other choice. So it was quite a shock, and a challenge, trying to catch up with years of issues that I had missed. It was so strange to get an issue of Superman printed in 1997 that my aunt would send me from New Jersey and read it and compare it to the last issue I had read, in Spanish, with a cover date of 1989.

And the same applies to 2000 AD, I think I have read not a single Prog published in the nineties, but I have a lot of issues from the early eighties and late seventies, and that’s what I like and reread the most, I just love it. So you could say I’m an honorary 80’s boy, and I’ll always be. Anyway, I would love to read old stuff, but since it is not a priority I keep saying I’ll buy a Marvel Masterworks next time I have fifty bucks to spare, and of course there is never such time. What I do want to buy is Barry Windsor Smith’s run in Conan, decades ago, I already have it all in trade paperback format but I want the original issues (although we are talking about an amount of money that is out of my possibilities).

And now off I go. Sunday it's election day over here. Or rather re-election. Or rather something else.

Es cierto que rara vez toco temas políticos aquí en el blog, pero no es por desidia ni indiferencia, sino simplemente porque siento que otros, como Augusto, pueden transmitir mejor que yo mensajes de esta índole. Apoyo a Susana Villarán y este domingo marcaré el NO. Espero que ustedes también. 

Por cierto, el martes de esta semana se realizó la Noche de Arte por Lima, en Dédalo. De manera rotunda, 24 de los artistas más importantes y prestigiosos del Perú expresaron su apoyo por Susana Villarán, donando sus cuadros generosamente. Rara vez hay muestras que congreguen al mismo tiempo figuras como la de Ramiro Llona, José Tola, Ricardo Wiese, Gerardo Chávez, Enrique Polanco, etc. Incluso, el mismo Eduardo Lores, quizás más conocido en su faceta como novelista, poeta o articulista de El Comercio, presentó un interesante cuadro que me hizo recordar su libro “Manía”, y eso fue justamente lo que le comenté en algún momento de la noche.

Saludé a María Elena Fernández, y a artistas como Lorenzo Osores y Alfredo Alcalde. Como siempre, fue un gusto contar con la presencia de Anel Townsend, quien ha llevado de manera ejemplar la campaña del NO. Pablo Alayza, Rodrigo Cueto y otros chicos del Pestalozzi tocaron música en vivo, mientras iban llegando cada vez más y más invitados. Para mí fue especialmente divertido conversar con Sebastián Lores y Gabriel Lores y, sobre todo, con Arturo José Valdés Hamann, uno de mis grandes amigos del colegio a quien le perdí la pista por años y que recién ahora, o desde hace poco, vuelvo a reencontrar en eventos de este tipo. Como tenía que llegar temprano a COSAS al día siguiente, no pude quedarme hasta el final. Pero al menos estuve conversando con Arturo hasta que él y su enamorada se fueron.   

Avengers: the Children’s Crusade - Heinberg & Cheung

To be young and make mistakes is bad enough, to be a young superhero with the weight of the world on your shoulders and still make mistakes is even worse. In “Children’s Crusade”, everyone must make life changing decisions, sometimes they make the right call, sometimes the wrong one.  

When Iron Lad returns to the 21st century to save Wiccan’s life he knows he’s once again altering the future. He knows that in order for this reality to exist, he must turn into Kang the Conqueror as an adult and attack the original roster of Avengers. 

Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, is repudiated by the entire mutant community. After all, she ruined millions of lives by depowering 90% of the mutant population after the events of House of M and Decimation. Perhaps she has decided to let go of all that, and that would explain her amnesia. But in the end she recognizes Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd as her lost sons. 

The fight between Magneto and Dr. Doom in Latveria attracts the attention of the Avengers, the X-Men and even X-Factor. I remember how excited I was about the possibility of a crossover between X-Factor and the Young Avengers. After all, the two most important gay couples of the Marvel universe should have met by now. I’m talking about Wiccan / Hulkling and Rictor / Shatterstar. Peter David has explained many times that the relationship between these two characters had always been a “wink, wink, nudge, nudge” kind of thing, that’s why it made perfect sense for them to come out of the closet. I’ve been reading X-Factor for years, and one of my favorite elements of the title is the sensible and intense portrayal of the romantic life between Rictor and Shatterstar. Finally, I was overjoyed to see X-Factor and the Young Avengers under the same roof. And Rictor, perhaps out of bravery or simply out of desperation, allows himself to be the target of Wanda Maximoff’s mystic energies. And that is how he regains his mutant powers.   

When all the superheroes start fighting against Dr. Doom, who has access to the life force, the very force that turned the Scarlet Witch into the most powerful creature on Earth, all hell breaks loose. Iron Lad, in an act of fury annihilates the Vision and Stature dies. In the end, Iron Lad acts like Kang would, thus ensuring his future as the Avenger’s villain instead of the idealistic adventurer he had always wanted to be. The repercussions of the battle are hard, especially for the kids. 

I was talking about mistakes and regrets. Sure, I regret some of the choices I’ve made in my life. Instead of studying literature I should have studied economy, like some of my friends, and I’d be making ten times the money I make now. But these are minor regrets. And they are nothing compared to the biggest mistakes I made in my life, when I was a teenager. I was insecure, and I lacked the courage that I have somehow gained over the course of the years. I wasn’t brave enough to do the things I wanted to do, or to speak my mind when I had to. I missed opportunities, and my cowardice caused me too much pain.

So I understand Eli Bradley when he says he’s only 17 and he’s made a lot of mistakes. And of course he’ll make more, but his big mistake is to quit the team... to sacrifice action in pursuit of an unobtainable error-free way of life. But somehow it all makes sense, because when I was 17 I was also overrun by the temptation of quitting. And I know how that feels, and having Allan Heinberg writing these lines makes me remember those feelings. And that’s why I also understand Billy Kaplan’s depression. The curse of losing all optimism. I have also been depressed, and I’ve also secluded myself in the privacy of my room, unable to reconnect with the world outside. So reading the final chapter of the Children’s Crusade I experimented it all over again. All those difficult moments, all the hardships of growing up. And I wish I could travel back in time, just like Iron Lad had done, to tell my older self that things wouldn’t be so dismal in the future.

Of course, this series wouldn’t have been so amazing without the top notch art of Jim Cheung. There are some unforgettable action scenes, like the fight in Latveria and the arrival of Iron Lad and the battle against an omnipotent Doctor Doom (which involves the X-Men, the Avengers and X-Factor). The double page spread that reunites the X-Men with the Avengers is also a great work of composition. But Cheung’s pencils also shine in more familiar settings, for instance, when the Young Avengers are sitting on a bench, just like a group of normal kids, and more especially when another couple of gay lovers –Rictor and Shatterstar– express their feelings for each other. And, of course, we also have the kiss between Billy and Teddy, a very touching scene of two boys expressing their love. And Jim Cheung sure was the perfect artist for this.

The return of Iron Lad / el regreso de Iron Lad

The moment Billy Kaplan and Teddy Altman kiss each other is historical. First, because it’s the first time in half a century that two underage gay boys kiss on the page of a Marvel comic. And second because this is a milestone of maturity. Heinberg’s characters have evolved so much that you end up connecting with them on unprecedented levels. You care for them as if they were actually alive. And you feel with them, and you relate to what they’re going through, and you remember how things were when you had that age. This is one of the biggest accomplishments writers can achieve. And this is why the Children’s Crusade will continue to have such a strong emotional impact on me. Forever.

X-Factor: Rictor & Shatterstar

Ser joven y cometer errores es bastante malo, ser un joven súper-héroe con el peso del mundo sobre tus hombros y encima cometer errores es incluso peor. En la "Cruzada de los niños", todos deben tomar decisiones de vida o muerte, a veces aciertan; otras veces, no.

Cuando Iron Lad regresa al siglo XXI para salvar la vida de Wiccan sabe que está alterando el futuro otra vez. Sabe que para que esta realidad exista, de adulto debe convertirse en Kang el Conquistador y atacar a la agrupación original de los Vengadores.

Wanda Maximoff, la Bruja Escarlata, es repudiada por toda la comunidad mutante. Después de todo, ella arruinó millones de vidas al quitarle los poderes al 90% de la población mutante después de los eventos de House of M y Decimation. Tal vez ha decidido olvidar, y por eso está con amnesia. Pero al final, ella reconoce a Billy Kaplan y Tommy Shepherd como sus hijos perdidos.

X-Men & Avengers

La pelea entre Magneto y Dr. Doom en Latveria atrae la atención de los Vengadores, los X-Men e incluso X-Factor. Recuerdo lo entusiasmado que estaba ante la posibilidad de un encuentro entre "X-Factor" y "Young Avengers". Everyone against Dr. Doom / todos contra el Dr. Doom

Cuando todos los súper-héroes empiezan a pelear contra el Dr. Doom, quien tiene acceso a la 'fuerza de la vida', la misma fuerza que transformó a la Bruja Escarlata en la criatura más poderosa de la Tierra, el infierno se desata. Iron Lad, en un acto de furia aniquila a Vision y Stature muere. Al fin, Iron Lad actúa como lo haría Kang, asegurando así su futuro como el villano de los Vengadores en lugar del aventurero idealista que siempre quiso ser. Las repercusiones de esta batalla son duras, en especial para los jóvenes. 

Young Avengers

Estaba hablando sobre errores y arrepen-timientos. De hecho que me arrepiento de algunas de las elecciones que hice en mi vida. En vez de estudiar literatura debería haber estudiado economía, como algunos de mis amigos, y estaría ganando diez veces el dinero que gano ahora. Pero estos son arrepentimientos menores. Y no son nada comparados a los más grandes errores que cometí en mi vida, cuando era un adolescente. Fui inseguro, y me faltaba el coraje que de algún modo he ganado con el paso de los años. No tuve la valentía necesaria para hacer las cosas que quise hacer, o para decir lo que pensaba. Me perdí oportunidades, y mi cobardía me causó demasiado dolor.

Así que entiendo a Eli Bradley cuando dice que él sólo tiene 17 años y ya ha cometido un montón de equivocaciones. Y por supuesto, cometerá más, pero su gran error es renunciar al equipo... sacrificar la acción en busca de un inalcanzable estilo de vida libre de errores. Pero de algún modo todo tiene sentido, porque cuando yo tenía 17 también fui asediado por la tentación de la renuncia. Y sé cómo se siente, y tener a Allan Heinberg escribiendo estas líneas me hace recordar esos sentimientos. Y es por eso que también comprendo la depresión de Billy Kaplan. La maldición de perder el optimismo. Yo también he estado deprimido, y me he enclaustrado en la privacidad de mi habitación, incapaz de reconectar con el mundo exterior. Así que al leer el capítulo final de "Children’s Crusade" lo experimenté todo de nuevo. Todos esos momentos difíciles, todos los dolores de crecer. Y desearía poder viajar en el tiempo, tal como lo hizo Iron Lad, para decirle a mi 'yo' anterior que las cosas no serían tan miserables en el futuro.

Por supuesto, esta serie no habría sido tan asombrosa sin el arte de primer nivel de Jim Cheung. Hay algunas escenas de acción inolvidables, como la pelea en Latveria y la llegada de Iron Lad y la batalla contra un omnipotente Doctor Doom (que involucra a los X-Men, los Vengadores y a X-Factor). La página doble que reúne a los X-Men con los Vengadores es también un grandioso trabajo de composición. Pero los lápices de Cheung también brillan en escenarios más familiares, por ejemplo, cuando los Jóvenes Vengadores están sentados en una banca, como un grupo común y corriente de chavales, y muy especialmente cuando otra pareja de amantes gays –Rictor y Shatterstar– expresan sus sentimientos el uno por el otro. Primero, porque es la primera vez en medio siglo que dos chicos gays menores de edad se besan en la página de un cómic de Marvel. Y segundo, porque este es un hito de madurez. Los personajes de Heinberg han evolucionado tanto que terminas conectando con ellos a niveles sin precedentes. Te preocupas por ellos como si estuvieran vivos de verdad. Y sientes lo que ellos sienten, y te identificas con lo que les pasa, y recuerdas cómo eran las cosas cuando tenías esa edad. Este es uno de los más grandes logros que un escritor puede alcanzar. Y es por eso que "Children’s Crusade" continuará produciendo en mí una sacudida emocional. Para siempre.

Avengers: the Children’s Crusade - Allan Heinberg & Jim Cheung

Is tolerance one of your virtues? Certainly, judging those who are closest to me I’ve seen many intolerant people. Most of them are intolerant in a passive-aggressive way, others are actively intolerant. But at what point intolerance turns into violence?

In the first issue of Avengers: the Children’s Crusade, the Young Avengers fight against the Sons of the Serpent, a gang of white supremacists who also happen to hate gays and lesbians, so obviously they feel forced to exterminate a group that embraces diversity more than anything else: besides a black hero we also have an openly gay couple. Allan Heinberg gives us a particularly suggestive scene: Hulkling, in jest, kisses the leader of the Sons of the Serpent and the man tells him he will burn in hell for that. The question, as posed by Hulkling, should be asked more often: violence is OK, but kissing someone of your own sex guarantees eternal damnation?

In a decisive moment of the battle, Wiccan unleashes all his power. And that is power enough to neutralize all the criminals and more. After this, the Avengers are concerned about the young mage. And he’s swiftly sent to Avengers Tower, allegedly for his own protection. Obviously, his boyfriend accompanies him, and that’s when one of the funniest scenes I’ve read in a Marvel comic takes place. Wiccan and Hulkling are about to kiss in the Avengers headquarter, perhaps fulfilling the ultimate fanboy fantasy, but before reaching the anticipated nerdgasm, they’re interrupted by Speed and the rest of the Young Avengers. 

Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd are twin brothers, one of them is a wizard and the other is a speedster, just like Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) and Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver). All of this seems to prove the theory that they are Magneto’s grandsons, and when the master of magnetism arrives he accepts the possibility of being their grandfather. 

Together, they all go to Mount Wundagore, in Transia. This is the first step in the search for the Scarlet Witch, a quest that will bring them all to Latveria, the kingdom of Dr. Doom. There, Billy Kaplan decides it’s time for a little magical cross-dress and disguises himself as Wanda Maximoff, although he admits: “For the record, I’m not the sort of person who enjoys dressing up in his mother’s clothes”. Inside Doom’s castle, he finds Wanda Maximoff, who he believes to be his mother, but the woman has lost all her memories and also her mystic energies. When the Young Avengers try to rescue Wiccan and the former Scarlet Witch, Dr. Doom attacks them fiercely. And just in the nick of time, Nathaniel (Iron Lad) arrives and transports them in time. 

As we can remember, in the original Young Avengers series, it was Iron Lad who traveled back in time to reunite a group of teenaged heroes and to prevent himself from turning into Kang the Conqueror, one of the Avengers greatest villains. In the Children’s Crusade Young Avengers, we get a very meaningful story about the early days of this group of underage heroes. As we saw back in 2004, the Young Avengers started as an exclusively male team, just like many other juvenile groups (Teen Titans, Young Justice, etc.). Heinberg shows how they are all nerds, geeks and above all true fanboys. Patriot has never been out on a date, Iron Lad has never had any luck with the girls, in the past or in the future, and the only guys who are getting some action are Wiccan (back then still called Asgardian) and Hulkling. 

As the four youngsters spend the night together, they run into Electro, a well-known Spider-Man enemy. They fight against him but they realize that they’re seriously outclassed, they might be stronger and more powerful, but their lack of training, focus and discipline shows. They get their asses kicked, just like they did on the first issue of Young Avengers. Proving, once again, that they are still inexpert and clumsy just like any other teenager, and that even with the best of intentions they’re likely to mess up big time. I think this is an aspect that most writers forget when they write about young heroes. They’re supposed to make mistakes, after all they’re still learning. Iron Lad almost gets killed in the battle, and Billy gives him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, instead of his magic it’s only thanks to his CPR abilities that the kid from the future is saved. And it is because of that debt that Iron Lad returns to the past, at the exact instant in which Billy’s life is at stake.

Jim Cheung & Alan Davis

The first four issues of “Avengers: the Children’s Crusade” are illustrated by the extraordinary Jim Cheung, who was also in charge of the art in the original series. Cheung’s art is absolutely beautiful but there is a special reason why he excels in this series: he knows how to portray young people in a vital and refreshing way. With his spectacular pin-up pages, his extraordinary covers and his revolutionary designs, Cheung reinforces the concept of youth. If we look at the splash page, for instance, we get an image so striking that could serve as poster, as a cover or both.

But at the same time, Cheung knows how to highlight the youthfulness of these characters, and shows us their most intimate aspects with a candor and a passion that many artists would fail to acquire. Such is the case of the peaceful and romantic moment between Billy and Teddy, inside Avengers HQ: we see the two boys touching each other tenderly, and everything about them feels real. Their physical proximity between is as natural as the air they breathe, and that is made evident when we see them sleeping together in the same bed.  

Children’s Crusade Young Avengers is illustrated by legendary British artist Alan Davis, who does a superb job showing us the first incarnation of this group of teenaged heroes. There is a particularly endearing moment, when Billy delicately touches Nathaniel before giving him the “kiss of life”. Nathaniel’s eyes, as he wakes up, are full of gratitude. And, as readers, we should be grateful for the best limited series Marvel has published in the past couple of years.

A kiss: the perfect torture for homophobics / Un beso: la tortura perfecta para los homofóbicos

¿Es la tolerancia una de tus virtudes? Ciertamente, al juzgar a aquellos que me son más cercanos, compruebo que muchos que son intolerantes. La mayoría es intolerante de una manera pasivo-agresiva, otros son activamente intolerantes. ¿Pero en qué momento la intolerancia se convierte en violencia?

En el primer ejemplar de "Avengers: the Children’s Crusade", los Jóvenes Vengadores pelean contra los Hijos de la Serpiente, una pandilla de suprematistas blancos que, claro está, también odian a los gays y a las lesbianas, así que obviamente se sienten obligados a exterminar a un grupo que abraza la diversidad más que ninguna otra cosa: además de un héroe negro también está la pareja abiertamente gay. Allan Heinberg nos da una escena particularmente sugerente: Hulkling, en broma, besa al líder de los Hijos de la Serpiente y el hombre le dice que arderá en el infierno por ello. La pregunta, formulada por Hulkling, debería hacerse más a menudo: la violencia es aceptable, pero ¿besar a alguien de tu mismo sexo garantiza la condena eterna?

Billy Kaplan y Tommy Shepherd son hermanos gemelos, uno de ellos es un hechicero y el otro es un velocista, al igual que Wanda Maximoff (la Bruja Escarlata) y Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver). Todo esto parece probar la teoría de que son los nietos de Magneto, y cuando el amo del magnetismo entra en escena, acepta la posibilidad de ser el abuelo de ambos.

Todos se van al Monte Wundagore, en Transia. Este es el primer paso en la búsqueda de la Bruja Escarlata, una misión que los llevará hasta Latveria, al reino del Dr. Doom. Allí, Billy Kaplan decide que es hora de un poco de travestismo mágico y se disfraza a sí mismo como Wanda Maximoff, aunque admite que: “Por si acaso, no soy el tipo de persona que disfruta vistiéndose con las ropas de su madre”. Dentro del castillo de Doom, encuentra a Wanda Maximoff, a quien él considera su madre, pero la mujer ha perdido todos sus recuerdos y también sus energías místicas. Cuando los Jóvenes Vengadores tratan de rescatar a Wiccan y a la ex Bruja Escarlata, el Dr. Doom los ataca con fiereza. Y, justo a tiempo, Nathaniel (Iron Lad) aparece y los transporta en el tiempo.

Como podemos recordar, en la serie original de "Young Avengers", fue Iron Lad quien viajó al pasado para reunir un grupo de héroes adolescentes y para impedir convertirse en Kang, el Conquistador, uno de los más grandes villanos de los Vengadores. En "Young Avengers Special", hay una significativa historia sobre los primeros días de este grupo de héroes menores de edad. Como vimos en el 2004, los Jóvenes Vengadores empezaron como un equipo exclusiva-mente masculino, al igual que muchos otros grupos juveniles ("Teen Titans", "Young Justice", etc.). Heinberg nos muestra que todos son nerds, geeks y, por encima de todo, fans. Patriot nunca ha tenido una cita, Iron Lad nunca ha tenido suerte con las chicas, ni en el pasado, ni en el futuro, y los únicos muchachos que saben cómo gozar son Wiccan (en ese entonces todavía se llamaba Asgardian) y Hulkling. 

Dr. Doom's past / el pasado de Dr. Doom

Cuando los cuatro jovencitos pasan la noche juntos, se encuentran con Electro, un conocido enemigo de Spider-Man. Luchan contra él pero se dan cuenta que no están a la altura de este rival, ellos pueden ser más fuertes y más poderosos, pero su falta de entrenamiento, concentración y disciplina es evidente. Tal como sucedió en el primer número de Young Avengers, los muelen a patadas. Se demuestra así, una vez más, que son inexpertos y torpes como cualquier adolescente en general, y que incluso con la mejor de las intenciones es probable que meterán la pata. Creo que este es un aspecto que muchos escritores olvidan cuando escriben sobre héroes jóvenes. Se supone que cometerán errores, después de todo, todavía están aprendiendo. Iron Lad casi muere en batalla, y Billy le hace respiración boca a boca, en vez de su magia, es gracias a su habilidad con los primeros auxilios que el chiquillo del futuro se salva. Y es a causa de esta deuda que Iron Lad regresa al pasado, en el segundo exacto en el que la vida de Billy está en riesgo.

Los primeros cuatro números de “Avengers: the Children’s Crusade” son ilustrados por el extraordinario Jim Cheung, quien también estuvo a cargo del arte en la serie original. El arte de Cheung es absolutamente hermoso pero hay una razón especial por la que se supera a sí mismo en esta serie: él sabe como retratar a los jóvenes de una manera vital y refrescante. Con sus espectaculares pin-ups, sus extraordinarias portadas y sus revolucionarios diseños, Cheung refuerza el concepto de la juventud. Si vemos la página inicial, por ejemplo, tenemos una imagen tan impactante que podría servir como un afiche, una portada o ambos. 

Pero al mismo tiempo, Cheung sabe cómo resaltar la juventud de sus personajes; y mostrarnos sus momentos más íntimos, con un candor y una pasión que muchos artistas fracasarían en conseguir. Tal es el caso del pacífico y romántico momento entre Billy y Teddy, en la base de los Vengadores: vemos a los dos muchachos tocándose el uno al otro con ternura, y todo en ellos se siente real. Su proximidad física es tan natural como el aire que respiran, y esto se hace evidente cuando los vemos durmiendo juntos en la misma cama.   

"Young Avengers Special" está ilustrado por el legendario artista británico  Alan Davis, quien hace un soberbio trabajo al mostrarnos la primera encarnación de este grupo de héroes adolescentes. Hay un momento particularmente encantador, cuando billy toca delicadamente a Nathaniel antes de darle el "beso de la vida". Los ojos de Nathaniel, al despertar, están llenos de gratitud. Y, como lectores, nosotros deberíamos estar agradecidos por la mejor serie limitada que Marvel ha publicado en los últimos dos años.

L’INCAL - Jodorowsky & Moebius

Moebius

I wish I were a polyglot. I wish I could read Dostoyevsky in Russian, Goethe in German, Proust in French or Dante in Italian. But alas that is not possible. All I have is English and Spanish. That means most of the novels and comics I read are either in Spanish or in English. I don’t trust translators “traduttore, traitore” goes an old Italian saying. And that’s why if I can’t read something in its original language, then I simply avoid reading it (I make exceptions, of course, and that’s why I’ve read “Crime and Punishment” although not “À la recherché du temps perdu”). Today, however, I wish to make an exception to this unspoken rule.

“L’Incal” was originally published in French, but I tend to trust in the Spanish translation especially because Jodorowsky’s mother tongue is Spanish. But even if that wasn’t the case, there are more than enough merits in these graphic novels to talk about them.

In the early 80s, Jodorowsky created the universe of the Incal. In a series of well-connected original graphic novels, he described a mystical device that could bestow upon their users abilities and knowledge of divine nature. Everything begins with John DiFool, a mediocre detective, a drinker, a loser who has no other goals in his life but to visit an establishment of homeosluts. But one day, a dying alien gives him the Incal, a small crystal pyramid of infinite power.

Soon, the transformation begins. The Incal changes John, and even Deepo, his pet, an urban “concrete seagull”. And this is quite a peculiar city, indeed. It’s designed as a well, and at the very bottom there is a lake of acid. Above the city, a gigantic citadel floats. Inside its walls the clone-president reigns supreme in a paradise of hedonism and sexual depravity. 

Soon, the clone-president decides to capture John DiFool, well aware that the power of the Incal might disrupt the entire hierarchy. But at the same time, the Bergs, an alien race, are behind John. And so are the technopriests of the Church of Industrial Saints. And so is Tanatha, the leader of the Amok, a rebel group that intends to destroy the president’s floating palace and all the noble men that live there.

The Incal is a journey of pure adventure, undiluted action and strong emotions since the beginning. The second page shows us John DiFool falling into the abyss, hundreds of levels away from the acid lake. This second page is, I’d dare to say, one of the best and most influential pages of the ninth art. Artist Moebius (Jean Giraud), paints an entire world in one dramatic frame. We see the hundreds of levels that are above and below John DiFool, with a complete dominion over perspective and details, Moebius does what is impossible to accomplish for most artists: make the fantastic seem real while adding an extraordinary level of dramatic tension to the scene. 

Surely, Jodorowsky’s story would have not been the same without a master like Moebius. Considered, and justly so, like one of the best European artists, and superior to many of the most famous American pencilers, Moebius gave a much needed sense of humanity and imagination to a story that tackled religious aspects in a sci-fi scenario.

The adventure never stops, and John DiFool escapes from one persecutor only to fall in the claws of another. And things get even more complicated. The Metabaron captures John DiFool, but he has lost the Incal in the hands of Animah. Due to the circumstances, Tanatha and Kill Wolfhead will be forced to work alongside John DiFool, Deepo, the Metabaron and his adopted son Soluna (the future androgynous messiah) and Animah. Together, the seven are able to reconnect the Light Incal and the Dark Incal. And once they do, everything changes. The repercussions go far beyond their world or solar system, as they learn that a cosmic menace might cause the destruction of the galaxy. 

Now, I have no intentions of retelling hundreds of pages of theological metaphors and cosmic wars. All of it takes place in six graphic novels (which you can find in many languages, so there’s no need to be a polyglot to read them): "L'Incal Noir" (1981), "L'Incal Lumière" (1982), "Ce qui est en bas" (1984), "Ce qui est en haut" (1985), "La cinquième essence - Galaxie qui Songe" (1988), "La cinquième essence - La planète Difool" (1989). After 300 pages of The Incal, I got the impression that Jodorowsky needed more room to expand upon certain plot threads and ideas. It’s curious to observe how the American industry consists in producing one six-issue arc after another, and sometimes writers don’t have any ideas at all but they still write long arcs. Those comics are often a waste of pages, an example of length devoid of any significant content. The Incal, nonetheless, it’s all about content but not length, sure it might seem that it’s a long story but it’s not enough. It barely scratches the surface of a universe that Jodorowsky has been exploiting narratively for over three decades.   

Finally, I would like to point out the visual strength of Moebius. Without the enormous talent of this French artist the Incal wouldn’t have existed. Or it would have existed in a much less impressive manner. We should be thankful for Moebius’s unparalleled imagination, his sophisticated sense of design and his unrivaled creativity. This is an artist that has inspired not only the audience but also many other artists. His influence can be found in Europe, in the United States and even in Japan. Everyone should take a look at the pages of The Incal, they are like graphic jewelry; they’re a real treasure.

Y es por eso que, cuando no puedo leer algo en su idioma original, simplemente evito leerlo (hago excepciones, por supuesto, y por eso leí “Crimen y castigo” pero no "En busca del tiempo perdido"). Hoy día, sin embargo, deseo hacer una excepción a esta regla tácita.

“El Incal” fue originalmente publicada en francés, pero tiendo a confiar en la traducción española, especialmente porque la lengua materna de Jodorowsky es el castellano. Pero incluso si ese no fuera el caso, hay méritos más que suficientes en estas novelas gráficas para hablar sobre ellas. 

A inicios de los 80, Jodorowsky creó el universo del Incal. En una bien conectada serie de novelas gráficas, describió un artefacto místico que otorgaría a sus usuarios habilidades y conocimientos de naturaleza divina. Todo empieza con John DiFool, un detective mediocre, un borracho, un perdedor que tiene como única meta en la vida ir de juerga a los establecimientos de homeoputas. Pero un día, un alienígena moribundo le da el Incal, una pequeña pirámide de cristal de poder infinito.  

Pronto, la transformación empieza. El Incal cambia a John, e incluso a Deepo, su mascota, una urbana "gaviota de concreto". Y de hecho esta es una ciudad bastante peculiar. Está diseñada como un pozo, y en el fondo hay un lago de ácido. Sobre la ciudad, flota una gigantesca ciudadela. Dentro de sus muros, el clon-presidente reina supremo en un paraíso de hedonismo y depravación sexual.

Pronto, el clon-presidente decide capturar a John DiFool, conciente de que el poder del Incal podría destruir toda la jerarquía. Pero al mismo tiempo, los bergs, una raza alienígena, están detrás de John. Y también lo están los tecnopadres de la Iglesia de los Santos Industriales. Y también lo está Tanatha, líder del Amok, un grupo rebelde que intenta destruir el palacio flotante del presidente y a todos los nobles que residen allí.

El Incal es una travesía de pura aventura, con acción sin diluir y emociones fuertes desde el principio. La segunda página nos muestra a John DiFool cayendo al abismo, a cientos de niveles del lago de ácido. Esta segunda página es, me atrevería a decir, una de las páginas más influyentes del noveno arte. El artista Moebius (Jean Giraud), pinta un mundo entero en una sola viñeta dramática. Vemos los cientos de niveles que están encima y debajo de John DiFool, con un dominio completo de la perspectiva y los detalles, Moebius logra algo que es imposible para muchos artistas: hacer que lo fantástico parezca real mientras que añade un extraordinario nivel de tensión dramática a la escena. 

Seguramente, la historia de Jodorowsky no habría sido la misma sin un maestro como Moebius. Considerado, y justamente, como uno de los mejores artistas europeos, y superior a la mayoría de dibujantes de Estados Unidos, Moebius le entrega un sentido de humanidad e imaginación a un relato que aborda aspectos religiosos en un escenario de ciencia ficción.

La aventura nunca se detiene, y John DiFool escapa de un perseguidor sólo para caer en las garras de otro. Y las cosas se complican aun más. El Metabarón captura a John DiFool, pero él ha perdido el Incal a manos de Animah. A causa de las circunstancias, Tanatha y Cabeza de Lobo se ven obligados a trabajar junto con John DiFool, Deepo, el Metabarón y su hijo adoptivo Soluna (el futuro mesías andrógino) y Animah. Juntos, los siete logran reconectar el Incal Luz y el Incal Negro. Y cuando lo hacen, todo cambia. Las repercusiones van más allá del mundo o del sistema solar, y descubren que una amenaza cósmica podría causar la destrucción de la galaxia.

No tengo intenciones de narrar cientos de páginas de metáforas teológicas y guerras cósmicas. Todo esto se desarrolla en seis novelas gráficas (que pueden encontrar en muchos idiomas así que no hace falta ser políglota para leerlas): "El Incal Negro" (1981), "El Incal Luz" (1982), "Lo que está abajo" (1984), "Lo que está arriba" (1985), "La Quinta Esencia I: La galaxia que sueña" (1988), "La Quinta Esencia II: Planeta DiFool" (1989). Después de 300 páginas de "El Incal" me dio la impresión que Jodorowsky necesitaba más espacio para explotar ciertas ideas e hilos argumentales. Es curioso observar cómo la pauta norteamericana consiste en producir arcos argumentales de seis números, y a veces los escritores no tienen ideas pero aún así escriben extensos arcos. Estos cómics son a menudo un desperdicio de páginas, un ejemplo de extensión desprovista de contenido significativo. "El Incal", no obstante, se centra en el contenido mas no en la extensión, sin duda, puede parecer una historia larga pero no es suficiente. Apenas raspa la superficie de un universo que Jodorowsky ha estado explotando por más de tres décadas.

Finalmente, me gustaría señalar la fuerza visual de Moebius. Sin el enorme talento de este artista francés el Incal no habría existido. O habría existido de una manera mucho menos impresionante. Deberíamos agradecer a la imaginación incomparable de Moebius, su sofisticado sentido de diseño y su creatividad única. Este es un artista que ha inspirado no sólo a su público sino también a muchos otros artistas. Su influencia puede encontrarse en Europa, en los Estados Unidos e incluso en Japón. Todos deberían darle una mirada a las páginas de "El Incal", son una joya gráfica; son un verdadero tesoro.
