December Films / películas de diciembre

As the snow covers the street, and the cold increases, staying at home sounds like a good alternative. But there is something that sounds even better: watching a fine selection of independent short films! I’ll start with Slingshot (2015), written and directed by David Hansen, an interesting proposal that combines a boy’s first crush with questions about masculinity and immigration.

Marco van Bergen writes and directs Vattnet (2012), an impressive short film from the Netherlands. Tobias Kersloot is a boy coming to terms with his own sexuality, he feels isolated and estranged from his peers, until he meets Serge Mensink; although they speak different languages and come from different cultures, they share a special kind of complicity. The filmmaker subtly highlights the homoerotic tendencies of his characters, increasing the sexual tension between them as the story goes on. Vattnet is daring, smart and at the same time touching.

Vincent Fitz-Jim’s Daniël (2012) is a Dutch production that revolves around Bas de Vries, a lonely and melancholic teenager who feels as trapped as the caged birds he so often admires. It’s difficult for him to accept that he has feelings for other boys, but the arrival of Frederik Stuut, a charismatic kid, teaches him why it’s so important to break free. Daniël is a captivating tale, full of details and nuances that add complexity to the protagonists.

Tamer Ruggli’s Hazel (2012) is a Swiss comedy about intolerance and the difficult transition from childhood to adolescence. Maxime Mori is a precocious, somewhat flamboyant boy, boasting a unique queerness that no one could expect from somebody so young; he’s constantly chastised by his mother, who finds the idea of having a gay son simply disgusting. Hazel is honest and bittersweet in equal parts.

As usual, in addition to December films we also have the Best of 2016 List. Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2016, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

Mientras la nieve cubre las calles, y el frío aumenta, quedarse en casa suena como una buena alternativa. Pero hay algo que suena aún mejor: ver una buena selección de cortometrajes independientes. Comenzaré con “Slingshot” (2015), escrito y dirigido por David Hansen, una propuesta interesante que combina el primer enamoramiento de un muchacho con cuestiones sobre masculinidad e inmigración.

Marco van Bergen escribe y dirige “Vattnet” (2012), un impresionante cortometraje de Holanda. Tobias Kersloot es un chico que empieza a explorar su sexualidad, él se siente aislado y alejado de sus compañeros, hasta que conoce a Serge Mensink; aunque hablan diferentes idiomas y proceden de culturas distintas, comparten un tipo especial de complicidad. El cineasta destaca sutilmente las tendencias homoeróticas de sus personajes, aumentando la tensión sexual entre ellos a medida que avanza la historia. “Vattnet” es un corto atrevido, inteligente y al mismo tiempo conmovedor.

“Daniël” (2012), de Vincent Fitz-Jim, es una producción holandesa que se centra en Bas de Vries, un adolescente solitario y melancólico que se siente tan atrapado como los pájaros enjaulados que tan a menudo admira. Otro año va y viene en este atormentado blog y ello indudablemente merece que sopesemos apropiadamente nuestras experiencias cinematográficas. Que sea así, por ende, y dejadnos girar el torno y la rueda. Hablad, oh lectores, y escuchad bien, puesto que aún nos resta suficiente ingenio para sorprenderos. Se ha propuesto que debíamos encontrar posiciones para todas las imágenes en movimiento presentadas en el transcurso del 2012, y con mente ágil y conocimientos tanto en materia de directores como de actores, confiamos en que vosotros incluiréis nuestro juicio entre los mejores. Aqueste es nuestro testimonio... suficiente en nuestro pensamiento íntimo que estas apreciaciones, desparramadas al alimón, sean de la más noble disposición.

2016 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

It doesn’t matter how long I’ve been doing this. The ninth art continues to have a preponderant place in my life. Getting new comics each month is always a moment of sheer joy. Nowadays, however, I feel like I should be investing my time in writing more comics instead of reading them, but regardless of my decisions as a creator, I always have a lot of fun as a reader!

The fun, for me, begins even before I actually hold a comic book in my hands. It starts with a careful selection of those titles that seem to be promising. Most of the time, I’m right on target (although every now and then a few stinkers find their way into my pull list). My purpose here is to highlight works that I find especially inspiring. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the sixth annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

A comic book should always be a harmonic combination of narrative skills and great art. Without a good writer, the stories we read won’t hold any special meaning in our hearts. Instead of choosing one writer I’ve decided to include three on the list: Tom King for his extraordinary scripts in the fascinating series “Vision”, Jeff Lemire for his rather splendid “Descender” and Grant Morrison for his violent and nightmarish miniseries “Nameless”.

Art is what turns comics into a superior form of narrative. Throughout the decades, pencilers and inkers have experimented with different styles and artistic approaches. But regardless of the year or the name of the artist, graphic quality has always been the most important component of the ninth art. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months, so it’s only fair to reward them appropriately: Jacen Burrows for his wonderful illustrations in “Providence”, Dustin Nguyen for his fantastic artwork in “Descender” and Mike Allred for his outstanding contribution to “Silver Surfer”.

When buying a comic, the first I thing I look at is the cover. The mission of the cover is to seduce the reader’s eyes. So it has to be attractive, it has to outshine all other covers, it has to persuade us to acquire the book. Drawing an eye-catching cover is no easy task. Luckily, there are artists that continue to amaze me with their output: Alex Maleev for his impressive painted covers for “International Iron Man” and “Infamous Iron Man”, Kevin Nowlan for his remarkable efforts in “Doctor Strange” and Choong Yoon, for his marvelous work in “Red Thorn”.

Some fans don’t pay attention to editors, but they work 24/7 to provide us with the best possible comics. In this case the award goes to Daniel Chabon (Dark Horse Comics) for putting together the superb deluxe editions of “The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch” and “Creatures of the Night” (both by Gaiman and Zulli).

This year I finally had the chance to read Neil Gaiman’s “Miracleman” and I absolutely loved it. However, faithful to the rules of the AAA, I can only choose material originally published in 2016. So the distinction for Best Single Issue goes to Love is Love, a deeply touching anthology that reminds us that love trumps hate. Heartbreaking, honest and intense, Love is Love is a book about respect, tolerance and, above all, people.

It took me a while to read it. And when I did, I immediately realized what I had been missing. “Vision” is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best ongoing series of the year. Tom King’s magnum opus is an innovative take on androids and superheroes, a dark and complex sci-fi odyssey, and it also happens to be the best Marvel series I’ve read in a long time.

Mike Del Mundo

There have been many wonderful miniseries (“Jupiter’s Circle”, “International Iron Man”, “Suiciders: Kings of HelL.A.”, “The Discipline” and “New Romancer”) but the prize to best limited series goes to “Providence”. Once again, Alan Moore has succeeded in creating an ambitious tale about Lovecraft and the true horror of early 20th century America.

There were so many promising new series in 2016 that I had a hard time making a selection. Titles as impressive as “Cinema Purgatorio”, “Doom Patrol”, “Jessica Jones”, “Infamous Iron Man”, “The Unworthy Thor”, “Cry Havoc”, “Snowfall” and “Renato Jones: The One%” were in my list. However, in the end, I decided to choose “The Fix” as the Best New Series. Nick Spencer has surprised me with his audacious proposal.

I’ve said plenty of times that I became a comic book fan partially because of John Byrne’s Superman. For years, Byrne was one of the best authors, writing and illustrating some of the most memorable runs for DC and Marvel. So I think it was about time to honor him with the edition of Marvel Universe by John Byrne Omnibus, by far the best archival collection / reprint of the year.

Once upon a time, only Marvel and DC existed, and it was thanks to publishers such as Dark Horse Comics that new possibilities outside the realm of superheroes could be explored. In 2016 Dark Horse celebrated his 30th anniversary promoting new projects and reprinting classic materials. And I couldn’t be more satisfied with the results. Dark Horse Comics is the Best Publisher of 2016.

I always enjoy the articles published in ComicsAlliance.com, a webpage that truly understands what it means to combine journalism, comics and, why not, humor. I wish more sites would share their lighthearted approach!

“Ars longa, vita brevis” goes an old Latin saying. Art, indeed, can be everlasting even if our lives are not. In 2016 we say goodbye to several prominent creators: Steve Dillon, one of the best British artists, frequent 2000 AD collaborator and also famous for his work on DC and Marvel. Dillon was one of my favorite Judge Dredd artists, and he illustrated many unforgettable stories. Darwyn Cooke, a talented artist who reignited readers’ passion towards golden age comics, his cartoonish and retro style was unique, and he certainly was respected by both the critics and the public. I first saw Paul Ryan’s art in the pages of Superman: the Man of Tomorrow, but then I found out he had been penciling some of the most important superheroes in Marvel and DC. Hopefully in 2018 I’ll be able to review comics illustrated by this impressive trio of superstars.

And thus 2016 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.

I bid thee farewell and long live the ninth art!

No importa cuánto tiempo llevo haciendo esto. El noveno arte sigue teniendo un lugar preponderante en mi vida. Conseguir nuevos comics cada mes es siempre un momento de gran disfrute. Hoy en día, sin embargo, siento debería invertir más mi tiempo en escribir más cómics en lugar de leerlos, pero independientemente de mis decisiones como creador, siempre me divierto un montón como lector.

La diversión, para mí, comienza incluso antes de sujetar ese cómic en mis manos. Empieza con una selección cuidadosa de los títulos que parecen ser prometedores. La mayoría de las veces, doy en el blanco (aunque de vez en cuando algunos bodrios terminan colándose en mi lista). Mi propósito aquí es resaltar trabajos que encuentro especialmente inspiradores. Un cómic siempre debe ser una combinación armónica de habilidades narrativas y buen arte. Sin un buen escritor, las historias que leemos no tendrán ningún significado especial en nuestros corazones. En lugar de elegir un escritor he decidido incluir tres en la lista: Tom King por sus guiones extraordinarios en la fascinante serie “Vision”, Jeff Lemire por su espléndido “Descender” y Grant Morrison por su violenta y pesimista miniserie “Nameless”.

El arte es lo que convierte a los cómics en una forma narrativa superior. A través de las décadas, los dibujantes han experimentado con diversos estilos y acercamientos artísticos. Pero independientemente del año o del nombre del artista, la calidad gráfica siempre ha sido el componente más importante del noveno arte. 3 artistas se han destacado durante los últimos 12 meses, por lo que es justo premiarlos adecuadamente: Jacen Burrows por sus maravillosas ilustraciones en “Providence”, Dustin Nguyen por fantástico arte en “Descender” y Mike Allred por su sobresaliente contribución a “Silver Surfer”.

Al comprar un cómic, la primera cosa que miro es la portada. La misión de la portada es seducir los ojos del lector. Así que tiene que ser atractiva, tiene que eclipsar a todas las otras portadas, tiene que persuadirnos para adquirir ese cómic. Dibujar una portada llamativa no es tarea fácil. Afortunadamente, hay artistas que siguen sorprendiéndome: Alex Maleev por sus impresionantes pinturas/portadas para “International Iron Man” y “Infamous Iron Man”, Kevin Nowlan por sus estupendos esfuerzos en “Doctor Strange” y Choong Yoon, por Su espléndido trabajo en “Red Thorn”.

Algunos fans no prestan atención a los editores, pero trabajan las 24 horas del día para proporcionarnos los mejores cómics posibles. En este caso, el premio va a Daniel Chabon (Dark Horse Comics) por ensamblar las magníficas ediciones de lujo de “The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch” y “Creatures of the Night” (ambos de Gaiman y Zulli).

Este año finalmente tuve la oportunidad de leer “Miracleman” de Neil Gaiman y me encantó. Sin embargo, fiel a las reglas de los AAA, sólo puedo elegir el material publicado originalmente en el 2016. El magnum opus de Tom King es una innovadora visión sobre androides y superhéroes, una oscura y compleja odisea de ciencia ficción, y también es la mejor serie de Marvel que he leído en mucho tiempo.

Alex Maleev

Ha habido muchas miniseries maravillosas (“Jupiter’s Circle”, “International Iron Man”, “Suiciders: Kings of HelL.A.”, “The Discipline” y “New Romancer”) pero el premio a la mejor serie limitada va para “Providence”. He dicho muchas veces que me convertí en un fanático del cómic en parte debido al Superman de John Byrne. Durante años, Byrne fue uno de los mejores autores, escribiendo e ilustrando algunas de las etapas más memorables de DC y Marvel. Así que creo que ya era hora de honrarlo con la edición de Marvel Universe by John Byrne Omnibus, de lejos la mejor obra coleccionada / reimpresión del año.

Hace muchísimos años, sólo Marvel y DC existían, y fue gracias a las editoriales como Dark Horse Comics que nuevas posibilidades fuera del reino de los superhéroes pudieron ser exploradas. En el 2016, Dark Horse celebró su 30 aniversario promocionando nuevos proyectos y reimprimiendo materiales clásicos. Y no podría estar más satisfecho con los resultados. Dark Horse Comics es la mejor editorial del 2016.

Siempre disfruto leyendo los artículos en ComicsAlliance.com, una página web que verdaderamente entiende lo que significa combinar periodismo, cómics y, por qué no, humor. Me gustaría que más páginas compartiesen este enfoque desenfadado.

Darwyn Cooke, un talentoso artista que reavivó la pasión de los lectores por los cómics de la edad de oro, su estilo caricaturesco y retro fue único, y ciertamente fue respetado tanto por los críticos como por el público. Vi por primera vez el arte de Paul Ryan en las páginas de Superman: the Man of Tomorrow, pero luego descubrí que había sido el dibujante de algunos de los superhéroes más importantes de Marvel y DC. Espero que en el 2018 sea capaz de revisar cómics ilustrados por este impresionante trío de superestrellas.

Y así el 2016 llega a su final. Hablad, hablad ahora, lectores. Si no sois tan malvados como un villano de Vodevil entonces, por todos los medios, desenvainad vuestra lengua. No seáis arrestados por discursos modestos, venid al frente y decidnos lo que está en vuestra mente a menos que oséis incurrir en la ira del dueño de esta taberna, escondida allende los reinos etéreos.

November Comics / Cómics de noviembre

In November, I finally got to read the conclusion of Strange Fruit, a wonderful miniseries with beautiful art. There were quite a few interesting comics this month, but my favorites are Vision # 3 (although technically is not a November comic even though I read it just now) and Unworthy Thor # 1. And now without further ado here are November comics as per solicitations:

CINEMA PURGATORIO #7

There's something horrible in that sound. You still can't believe what you just watched… but at least it's over. Who made these movies? There's something very wrong about them and you should go, just get up and leave. Aún no puedes creer lo que acabas de ver... pero al menos se acabó. ¿Quién hizo estas películas? Hay algo muy siniestro en ellas y debes irte, levántate y vete. Tal vez después de esta próxima función...

CREATURES OF THE NIGHT HC
Dos historias mágicas con extrañas criaturas que no son exactamente lo que parecen. En “El precio”, un felino misterioso se involucra en un conflicto nocturno con un oponente invisible y vicioso. “La hija de los búhos” relata la historia de una niña huérfana - y cómo aquellos que la maltrataron finalmente enfrentaron consecuencias extrañas.

La galería de villanos de Doctor Strange continúa aprovechando su debilidad. Satanna y Master Pandemonium torturan a Strange en su propio infierno personal.

Lo mejor del arte en Lima - 2016

2016 has been a fantastic. I knew that moving from Peru to the US would be a big change, and before coming here I wasn’t sure if I would be able to adapt easily. Fortunately, in only 4 months, I’ve already fell in love with the city of Milwaukee and I’ve made good friends.

At the beginning of the year I decided to translate Un-American Chronicles into Spanish. I thought it would be easy for me to do it, but for some reason I kept change entire dialogues and I realized I wasn’t impartial enough to translate my own word. Luckily, my friend Paco García Sánchez took charge of the translation and I must say I’m very satisfied with the result.

My first semester in UWM concluded last week, and although I’ve been extremely busy now I’m finally getting ready to do new projects with my usual collaborators (Juan Alarcón, Christian Castellanos, Alberto Aguado) but also with new ones (Kaskajo and Lucas Gattoni).

Since I started this blog I have always showcased my own artwork but I have also analyzed the artistic proposals of Peruvian artists. Despite the fact that I’ve completely missed the last 4 months of art exhibits (since in I’m no longer in Lima) I’ve decided to make a selection of the best of 2016 (or at least the best from January to August, 2016).

El 2016 ha sido un año fantástico. Sabía que trasladarme de Perú a Estados Unidos sería un gran cambio, y antes de venir aquí no estaba seguro si sería capaz de adaptarme fácilmente. Afortunadamente, en sólo 4 meses, la ciudad de Milwaukee me ha cautivado por completo y he hecho buenos amigos.

Al principio del año decidí traducir Un-American Chronicles al español. Pensé que sería fácil hacerlo yo mismo, pero por alguna razón estuve cambiando diálogos enteros y me di cuenta de que no era lo suficientemente imparcial para traducir mi propia obra. Afortunadamente, mi amigo Paco García Sánchez se hizo cargo de la traducción y debo decir que estoy muy satisfecho con el resultado.

Tomás Prochazka Núñez es un personaje habitual en las páginas virtuales de este blog. Aunque no es un amigo cercano es, definitivamente, uno de los artistas a quien más respeto. No ha dejado de sorprenderme gratamente desde sus primeros trabajos como estudiante en Corriente Alterna y luego en muestras individuales y colectivas. Aplaudo al Centro Colich por presentar “La máquina” y por confirmar que Tomás Prochazka es un artista de enorme talento.

La Galería Enlace tuvo el acierto de cederle un espacio al gran maestro escultor Antonio Pareja. “El toro que soñé” es una selección de esculturas en la que no hay una sola pieza débil. El veterano artista logra conmover al espectador con sus animales tallados en madera, piedra y metal.

La Galería Forum, uno de los espacios limeños de más larga trayectoria en el mundo del arte limeño, celebró su 40 aniversario con la muestra “Celebración”. Decenas de los mejores artistas peruanos colaboraron en esta colectiva: Valeria Ghezzi, Roy Keitel, Maroé Susti, Luz Negib, Luis Lama, Nanny Cárdenas, Ivana Ferrer, Fernando Otero, Inés Grau, Alicia Cabieses, Yulia Katkova, Denise Mulanovich, Rosi Schwartzman, Gonzalo García Callegari, Maricruz Arribas, Moico Yaker, Gabriel Alayza, Mateo Alayza, Alejo Alayza, Ramiro Llona, Eduardo Tokeshi, Martín López de Romaña, Elías Alayza, Gam Klutier, Jaime Romero, Mónica Cuba, Marco Testino, Joseph Firbas, Pablo Patrucco, Fito Espinosa, Silvia Westphalen, Martha Cisneros, Toto Fernández Ampuero, Luz Letts, Ricardo Wiesse, Mariella Agois, Rhony Alalhel, Gianna Pollarollo, Maya García Miró, Nana de la Fuente, Sergio Fernández, Sonia Prager, Alberto Grieve, Marcos Palacios, Fernando Taboada, Augusta Barreda, Eduardo Moll, Miguel Angel Velit, etc.

Cuando conocí a Aissa Chrem en la redacción de la revista COSAS, era evidente que lo suyo era la fotografía. Y si bien es una fotógrafa profesional que se ha abierto camino en el competitivo mundo limeño, también es una artista con mucho que decir y, sobre todo, muchísimo que mostrar. Treguas de vidrio es para mí la mejor propuesta artística del 2016.

Paola Franco siente devoción por el dibujo y no tiene miedo a mancharse los dedos con carboncillo o a dibujar sin parar. Espero que siga consolidando sus talentos y que prepare en el futuro cercano alguna muestra individual.

Ver la obra de Liniers en el MAC fue una experiencia increíble. “Pensemos bien con Liniers” es un magnífico ejemplo de buen arte y, sobre todo, una propuesta coherente que nos permite apreciar del todo la gracia y la estética de este estupendo creador argentino.

Baldomero Pestana, español de nacimiento pero argentino de corazón, tuvo la suerte de conocer a los mejores novelistas, poetas y artistas del Perú hace medio siglo. Bajo su cámara y su mirada atenta han desfilado Mario Vargas Llosa, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Julio Ramón Ribeyro, Martín Adán, Fernando de Szyzslo, Sabino Springett, Juan Manuel Ugarte Eléspuru, etc. Esta fue una muestra internacional firmemente anclada en los mejores exponentes culturales de nuestro país.
