June comics / cómics de junio

Only a handful of comics in June, but I’m sure that in a few days I’ll be celebrating my birthday (July 11) with more comics than last month! I enjoyed reading Fantastic Four, Invaders and Thor (and my letter was published!). Spider-Man: Life Story was outstanding. But, against all odds, my favorite comic of the month was Mark Waid’s Ignited #1. And now without further ado here are June comics as per solicitations.

May comic books / cómics de mayo

May is always one of my favorite months, and I think it is because I get free comics. I’m talking, of course, about Free Comic Book Day, and now, for third year in a row, my favorite was 2000AD, with 48 thrilling pages plus free digital comics, this certainly has been the most generous offering of the season. Another great FCBD title was Mercury Heat, I’ll certainly be reading the next issue in a month or so. And I loved Alex Ross cover for Secret Wars! Jupiter’s Circle continues to impress me, but perhaps the biggest surprise this time was All-New X-Men #40, an issue that made it into the headlines of every comic news website, the reason? Bobby Drake, AKA Iceman, founding member of the X-Men, admits that he’s gay, we owe this wonderful coming-out-of-the-closet issue to Brian Michael Bendis. Finally, the best issue of the month was Alan Moore’s Providence. And now, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:

Jamie and Matt have drawn Baphomet drenched in blood on the cover. What a hilarious internal communication error. I'm sure it's a mistake and nothing to do with the story whatsoever.

Mayo es siempre uno de mis meses favoritos, y creo que es porque recibo cómics gratis. Estoy hablando, por supuesto, del Free Comic Book Day, y ahora, por tercer año consecutivo, mi favorito ha sido “2000AD”, con 48 emocionantes páginas y además cómics digitales gratuitos, sin duda este ha sido el ofrecimiento más generoso de la temporada. Otro gran título del FCBD es “Mercury Heat”, de todas maneras leeré el próximo número en un mes, más o menos. ¡Y me encantó la portada de Alex Ross para “Secret Wars”! “Jupiter’s Circle” continúa asombrándome, pero tal vez la mayor sorpresa en esta ocasión fue All-New X-Men #40, un número que apareció en los titulares de todas las páginas web de cómics, ¿la razón? Bobby Drake, también conocido como Iceman, miembro fundador de los X-Men, admite que es gay, le debemos esta tremenda salida del closet a Brian Michael Bendis. “In my dreams, I fly”. But don’t we all share fantastic dreams that are only nurtured by the extravagant and colorful worlds of the superhero genre? Flying isn’t easy… most of the time we get stuck on the ground. For every ten superhero titles only one is good enough to ignite our imagination, to make us fly, to make us dream about flying. And for every hundred titles only one is good enough to actually elevate our minds into a whole new stratosphere. Astro City is one of those rare titles, a true gem, an example of unparalleled creativity and innovation.

The first time I read Astro City was over a decade ago. I was lucky enough to get the first volume as a gift and the minute I read the first page I felt a deep connection with the Samaritan –Astro City’s equivalent of Superman–, a hero so fed up with the daily routine of catching bad guys and saving the world that his only desire is to sleep and fly peacefully, freely. Because when he flies to save lives and fight against villains, he’s never free. He’s a slave of the heroic circumstances that are forced upon him. So only in his dreams can he truly fly.

The Samaritan,  the First Family and the Honor Guard return to the pages of Astro City, accompanied by a vast array of old and new characters. The arrival of the Ambassador is a celebration of cosmic grandeur, he is one of those larger-than-life creatures, similar to Galactus. Busiek and Anderson pay homage to the Lee / Kirby era in Fantastic Four with the creation of the Ambassador. Certainly, the love for Kirby’s oeuvre was more than evident in one of Busiek’s most recent works: Kirby Genesis (published by Dynamite).

But Busiek never forgets the regular people, like Marella who works in Humano Global, a call center devoted to answering superhero emergencies. The balance between the ordinary and the extraordinary, between the human and the superhuman is what made this series so special in the 90s and what makes it even more relevant now, in an era befouled by mega-events, constant renumberings and relaunches, and multiple gimmicks.

In only two issues, the authors have added even more depth to an already large and complex metropolis. “Astro City is art, and it’s good art. It creates something –a place, perhaps a medium, or just a tone of voice– in which good stories are told”, explains Neil Gaiman. And it’s true. Although Astro City was born on the page it also lives in our hearts, and in a certain way we also live in it, populating the streets of this fascinating urban experiment. 

Returning to Astro City is like meeting old friends, like getting reacquainted with people you care about that, for a number of reasons, haven’t been in touch with you in years. I know I haven’t read the works of Busiek, Anderson and Ross in over a decade, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t missed them. Every time  I get asked about my favorite authors I talk about Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison and the entire pantheon of British writers, but I also talk about Kurt Busiek, one of the few American writers that is on par with his British colleagues. And that, my friends, is quite an accomplishment. 

The heroes of Astro City / los héroes de Astro City

Anderson reassumes his duty as penciler and inker, preserving his signature style, a combination between the classic lines of the heroes of yesteryear with the refreshing dynamism of more modern eras. Of course, another egregious citizen of Astro City reappears: Alex Ross. The famous artist provides some of the best covers I’ve seen in a long time. His hyperrealism is as fascinating as always, and his fantastic designs are an incomparable visual feast. Alex Ross draws great covers every month, but his work in this title is on another level.

Volar no es fácil... la mayoría de las veces nos quedamos en el suelo. De cada diez títulos de superhéroes sólo uno es lo suficientemente bueno como para despertar nuestra imaginación, para hacernos volar, para hacernos soñar con volar. Y de cada cien títulos sólo uno es suficientemente bueno para hacer que nuestra mente se eleve hacia una nueva estratósfera. "Astro City" es uno de esos raros títulos, una verdadera joya, un ejemplo de la creatividad y la innovación sin paralelos.

La primera vez que leí Astro City fue hace más de una década. Tuve la suerte de recibir el primer volumen como regalo y un minuto después de leer la primera página sentí una conexión profunda con Samaritan –el equivalente a Superman en Astro City–, un héroe tan harto de la rutina diaria de atrapar a los tipos malos y salvar el mundo que su único deseo es dormir y volar pacíficamente, libremente. Porque cuando vuela para salvar vidas o pelear contra villanos, nunca es libre. Es un esclavo de las circunstancias heroicas que le han sido impuestas. Así que solamente puede volar de verdad en sus sueños.

Samaritan, la Primera Familia y la Guardia de Honor retornan a las páginas de Astro City, acompañados por una vasta cantidad de viejos y nuevos personajes. La llegada del Embajador es una celebración de grandeza cósmica, él es una de esas criaturas 'más grandes que la vida', similar a Galactus. Busiek y Anderson rinden homenaje a la etapa Lee / Kirby en "Fantastic Four" con la creación del Embajador. Ciertamente, el amor por la obra de Kirby se hizo más que evidente en uno de los trabajos más recientes de Busiek: “Kirby Genesis” (publicado por Dynamite). 

Humano Global

Pero Busiek nunca olvida a la gente común y corriente, como Marella que trabaja en Humano Global, un call center abocado a responder emergencias súper-heroicas. El balance entre lo ordinario y lo extraordinario, entre lo humano y lo superhumano es lo que hizo esta serie tan especial en los 90s y lo que la vuelve aún más relevante ahora, en una época contaminada por mega-eventos, constantes re-numeraciones y relanzamientos, y múltiples trucos de venta.

En sólo dos números, los autores han añadido incluso más profundidad a una metrópolis ya de por sí grande y compleja. “Astro City es arte, y es buen arte. Crea algo –un lugar, tal vez un medio, o sólo un tono de voz– en el que son contadas buenas historias”, explica Neil Gaiman. Y es cierto. Aunque Astro City nació en la página también vive en nuestros corazones, y en cierto modo nosotros también vivimos allí, poblamos las calles de este fascinante experimento urbano. 

Regresar a Astro City es como saludar a viejos amigos, como reencontrarse con personas a las que aprecias pero que, por diversos motivos, no has visto en años. Sé que no he leído los trabajos de Busiek, Anderson y Ross hace más de una década, pero eso no significa que no los haya echado de menos. Cada vez que me preguntan cuáles son mis autores favoritos hablo de Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison y el panteón entero de escritores británicos, pero también hablo de Kurt Busiek, uno de los pocos escritores estadounidenses que está a la par de sus colegas británicos. Y eso es todo un logro.

Anderson retoma su rol como dibujante a lápiz y a tinta, preservando sus estilo característico, una combinación entre las líneas clásicas de los héroes del ayer con el refrescante dinamismo de eras más modernas. Por supuesto, reaparece otro egregio ciudadano de Astro City: Alex Ross. El famoso artista entrega algunas de las mejores portadas que he visto en mucho tiempo. Su hiperrealismo es tan fascinante como siempre, y sus fantásticos diseños son un incomparable festín visual. Alex Ross dibuja grandiosas portadas cada mes, pero su trabajo en esta colección está a otro nivel.

Masks # 1 - Chris Roberson & Alex Ross

Superheroes always operate on the outskirts of legality. They may capture criminals, but by doing so they’re also infringing the law, after all, no citizen can take justice into their own hands. Unless, of course, doing that becomes absolutely necessary. 

Chris Roberson reunites in the same city a group of masked vigilantes that existed way before Batman or Captain America. We are talking about classic pulp heroes from the 20s and 30s such as The Shadow, The Spider, Zorro, The Green Hornet and Kato. And Roberson cleverly poses a question of significant philosophical depths: what is the difference between law and justice? Which one of those should prevail? And what should be done in case justice is threatened by the law?

Green Hornet & Kato / el Avispón Verde y Kato

In a corrupted city, the major is hiring criminals as cops and instituting laws that will only make the mobsters and contra-bandists richer. The Green Hornet and Kato have problems dealing with this new status quo, they have always operated within the confine-ments of the law, and they had always associated law with justice, like so many people do. That’s when The Shadow appears. And he shows them that law and justice are very different things, and that injustice can often be found in the world of legality. With the help of Zorro and The Spider this group of gentlemen will declare war against a new fascist regimen unlike anything America has ever seen. 

What can I say? I’m not really a fan of these classic pulp heroes, but I really liked this first issue. I think Roberson has found a way to make the most out of this group of characters. Clearly there has been a lot of thought put into this project. 

Another major surprise was seeing Alex Ross doing interior art again. He does covers every month, mostly for Dynamite titles, but I really missed his sequential art. Looks like this year I’ve started buying more comics thanks to extraordinary artists such as John Cassaday (who after years of dedicating his talent exclusively to covers has returned as full penciler and inker) and now Alex Ross. 

I’ve been a Ross fan since Marvels and Kingdom Come. Surely, his style demands time. He uses models to get the level of photorealism that made him one of the most respected painters of the industry. He’s always meticulously careful with the designs he creates, and that is very time-consuming. Consequently, he wouldn’t be able to do a monthly series, so every new project from him is always welcome. I was thrilled looking at his pages, this first issue sure reminded me of what I have always loved about Ross. It’s official, this is Dynamite’s best miniseries of the year.

The Shadow / La Sombra

Los súper-héroes siempre operan al margen de la legalidad. Puede ser que capturen criminales, pero al hacerlo también infringen la ley, después de todo, ningún ciudadano puede actuar como justiciero. A menos, claro está, que hacerlo sea absoluta-mente necesario.

Chris Roberson reúne en la misma ciudad a un grupo de vigilantes enmas-carados que existieron mucho antes que Batman o el Capitán América. Estamos hablando de los clásicos héroes de los 'pulp' de los años 20 y 30 como La Sombra, La Araña, el Zorro, el Avispón Verde y Kato. Y Roberson coloca con astucia una pregunta de profundad filosófica: ¿cuál es la diferencia entre la ley y la justicia? ¿Cuál debería prevalecer? ¿Y qué debería hacerse en caso que la justicia sea amenazada por la ley?

En una ciudad corrupta, el alcalde contrata a criminales como policías, e instaura leyes que sólo enriquecen a los mafiosos y a los contrabandistas. Al Avispón Verde y a Kato les cuesta entender este nuevo status quo, y es que ellos siempre han operado dentro de los confines de la ley, y siempre han asociado la ley con la justicia, al igual que mucha gente. Entonces, La Sombra aparece. Y él les muestra que ley y justicia son dos cosas distintas, y la injusticia a menudo se encuentra en el mundo de la legalidad. Con la ayuda del Zorro y la Araña, este grupo de caballeros declarará la guerra contra el régimen más fascista que Estados Unidos ha visto alguna vez.

¿Qué puedo decir? En realidad no soy fan de esos clásicos héroes pulp, pero realmente me gustó el primer número. Creo que Roberson ha encontrado la manera de aprovechar a este grupo de personajes. Se nota que ha pensado bien en cómo hacer este proyecto.

Otra gran sorpresa fue ver a Alex Ross dibujando. Él hace portadas cada mes, sobre todo para Dynamite, pero yo realmente echaba de menos su arte secuencial. Parece que este año he comprado más cómics gracias a artistas extraordinarios como John Cassaday (quien se había dedicado años exclusivamente a las portadas) y ahora Alex Ross. 

He sido fan de Ross desde los días de "Marvels" y "Kingdom Come". Sin duda, su estilo demanda tiempo. Usa modelos para obtener el nivel de foto-realismo que lo convirtió en uno de los más respetados ilustradores de la industria. Siempre es meticulosamente cuidadoso con los diseños que crea, y eso consume tiempo. En consecuencia, no sería capaz de dibujar una serie mensual, así que cada nuevo proyecto suyo es siempre bienvenido. Quedé encantado mirando sus páginas, este primer número me recordó por qué amo el arte de Ross. Es oficial, esta es la mejor miniserie de Dynamite del año.
