June comic books / cómics de junio

Today is my birthday. And I’ve decided to celebrate it like I always do: sharing with you my most recent acquisitions. In this case, half a dozen of wonderful comic books. MPH and Starlight are amazing, and so far Slott’s Silver Surfer has been quite a pleasant surprise. This month I’m finally reading new Miracleman stories (issue # 6 was still included in my old Eclipse editions, but not issue # 7), so I’m even more excited than usual. The Unwritten continues to be the best ongoing series of 2014, improving with each new chapter (Mike Carey is so impressive). Nevertheless, the best issue of the month is The Wicked + The Divine, by Gillen & McKelvie. Brilliant stuff! And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations:

MIRACLEMAN #7

(W)  TBD (A) Chuck Austen, Alan Davis (CA) Alan Davis • Miracleman and Mr. Cream descend into the jungles of Paraguay where the battle with Gargunza begins! • Gargunza's shocking intentions for Liz Moran and her unborn child are revealed! • An unexpected enemy may mean the death of Miracleman! • Including material originally presented in WARRIOR #20-21 and MIRACLEMAN #6, plus bonus content.

MPH #2 (OF 5) CVR B CANETE

(W) Mark Millar (A) Duncan Fegredo (CA) Duncan Fregredo. A good guy dealt a tough hand, Roscoe's found the perfect Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card in the form of super-speed pills called MPH.  Now that he knows who put him away, he'll find that revenge is a dish best served…lightning fast! The all-new Millarworld Universe zooms ahead at breakneck speed with Millar and Fegredo's urban adventure tale.

SILVER SURFER #3

(W) Dan Slott (A) Michael Allred, Michael Allred • Any old heroes can save the day. The Surfer and Dawn are out to save the day AFTER. • As everything goes kablooey, find out why the fate of every possible tomorrow rests... in a wind-up toy monkey. • No. Really. One of those creepy things with the cymbals. • Also, after 48 years in comics, one of the most under appreciated characters in the entire Marvel Universe FINALLY gets a name. Have your handbooks ready!

STARLIGHT #4 CVR A CHAREST (MR)

(W) Mark Millar (A) Goran Parlov (CA) Travis Charest. Duke and his young companion are getting deeper into Tantalus' underground movement, doing everything they can to infiltrate the invaders and meeting some unlikely allies. It's been 40 years since Duke last held a gun. Does he still have what it takes to drive out alien invaders and save Tantalus for a second time?

UNWRITTEN VOL 2 APOCALYPSE #6 (MR)

(W) Mike Carey (A) Peter Gross (CA) Yuko Shimizu. 'The Fisher King,' part 1 of 3. As Pullman's cold war against stories turns hot, it's in stories that Tom must find the weapons and allies he'll need to beat him. And the best weapon of all is one a thousand knights have quested for...

WICKED + DIVINE #1 (MR) CVR B MCKELVIE & WILSON

(W) Kieron Gillen (A) Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson (CA) Matthew Wilson, Jamie McKelvie. Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as teenagers. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critically thermonuclear floor-fillers Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to start a new ongoing superhero fantasy with a beautiful oversized issue. Welcome to THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, where gods are the ultimate pop-stars. But remember: just because you're immortal, doesn't mean you're going to live forever.

¡Brillante!

Some stoic philosophers considered patience as one of the four cardinal virtues. And although I’m impatient in my daily life, I have no problem waiting months or even an entire year for a comic book. This month, there are two comic books that were definitely worth the wait: “Sandman Overture” # 2 (which I already reviewed here), with a 5 month delay and “Frankenstein Alive, Alive” # 3 (reviewed as well here) delayed one year. Both were really amazing, although my favorite is probably “Sandman Overture”. “Kick-Ass 3” and “The Unwritten” continue to surprise and thrill me, these are really fascinating titles (and I promise I’ll write about Kick-Ass 3 as I’ve done with the previous volumes of the series). And, as far as first issues go, in April I sure had a triple dose of awesomeness. “Caliban” was quite impressive, reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s “Alien”, it smoothly combines Ennis style with a sci-fi scenario. “All New Ghost Rider” was a fun first chapter, but the best is Tradd Moore’s dynamic art (Tradd is famous for his Luther Strode series, which you can find clicking here). And at last but not least, “Silver Surfer” was a much needed return to greatness for Galactus Herald, Slott writes a compelling story and Allred’s art is spectacular. And now, without further ado, here are April comic books as per solicitations:

ALL NEW GHOST RIDER #1
(W) Felipe Smith (A/CA) Tradd Moore 'ENGINES OF VENGEANCE' PART 1 A street race leads a young man on the FAST and FURIOUS road of destiny. Amid an East Los Angeles neighborhood running wild with gang violence and drug trafficking, a war brews in the criminal underworld! With four on the floor, Marvel's newest GHOST RIDER puts vengeance in overdrive!!!

CALIBAN #1 (MR)
(W) Garth Ennis (A/CA) Facundo Percio Master storyteller GARTH ENNIS and Fashion Beast artist FACUNDO PERCIO team up to deliver a haunting new epic of science fiction horror. The crew of the Caliban travels hyperspace on nothing more than a routine trip for the giant vessel. Just human beings that have been inside a bit too long, confident of no other life in the Galaxy, and all the vastness of space to remind them how far they are from home. But when an impossible accident suddenly causes the Caliban to slam into an abandoned alien ship, a nightmare in space begins to unfold. Ennis delivers his unique brand of flawed characters, spot-on dialog, and trademark flare for the unexpected in a new series in the vein of Alien. This is the beginning of the end for the crew of the Caliban. Available with Regular, Wraparound, Terror, and Design Sketch Incentive covers by Facundo Percio and a ultra-limited Dark Matter edition of just 1500 copies.

FRANKENSTEIN ALIVE ALIVE #3
(W) Steve Niles (A/CA) Bernie Wrightson. The Monster has lived under the roof of Dr. Ingles for over a year but now what seemed like hospitality has taken a sinister turn. Why is the Doctor dismissing the other patients? And why is the monster left behind?

KICK-ASS 3 #7 (OF 8) (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) John Romita. Hit-Girl's day of reckoning has arrived. Tied up mentally and physically, she's an easy mark even for a washed-up super-villain like Chris Genovese (formerly known as The Mother F**ker). Where is Kick-Ass when she needs him most? What's happened to ALL the costumed superheroes? A major character death is imminent and with only one more issue before the series finale, it could be anyone!

MIRACLEMAN #4
(W)  TBD (A) Garry Leach, Alan Davis (CA) Alan Davis • Origins and revelations bring the first chapter in the MIRACLEMAN saga to its shocking conclusion! • An unexpected ally leads Miracleman to Project Zarathustra, the site of the secret British operation that gave birth to the Miracleman Family. • After last issue's battle, the Warpsmiths regroup to mourn their dead in 'Ghostdance.' • Including material originally presented in WARRIOR #9-11 and A1 #1, plus bonus material.

QUANTUM & WOODY #1 REG SOOK
(W) James Asmus (A) Tom Fowler (CA) Ryan Sook Writer James Asmus (Thief of Thieves, Gambit, The End Times of Bram & Ben) and artist Tom Fowler (Venom, Hulk: Season One) punt the world's worst superhero team headfirst into the Valiant Universe! Once upon a time, Eric and Woody Henderson were inseparable. Adopted brothers. Best friends. Brilliant minds. Years later, they are estranged siblings, petty rivals, and washed-up failures. But when their father's murder leads them into the throes of a life-altering scientific accident, Eric and Woody will find themselves with a whole new purpose - and a perfectly legitimate reason to wear costumes and fight crime. Go big or go home, folks! Quantum and Woody are coming! And the action-packed, zeitgeist-shredding exploitation stunt comic you demanded is here at last. (And, yes, there will be a goat too. Eventually.)

SANDMAN OVERTURE #2 (OF 6) (MR)
(W) Neil Gaiman (A/CA) J. H. Williams. The Sandman's epic origin story continues in the second issue of the new, bimonthly miniseries by the superstar team of writer Neil Gaiman and artist J.H. Williams III! As Morpheus transforms through the early ages, a mysterious white figure makes his own first appearance. And The Corinthian makes a deal - but it may prove to be a sacrifice that he's not able to live with.

SIDEKICK #6 CVR A MANDRAKE & HIFI (MR)
(W) J. Michael Straczynski (A/CA) Tom Mandrake,  HiFi. For years, Barry 'FLYBOY' Chase has carried the grief and belief that his mentor The Red Cowl was dead, and the guilt that he could have prevented it. Now Julia Moonglow provides all the proof he needs to know that the Red Cowl is alive and well...somewhere. Now comes the task of finding him, and more important still...exacting their revenge.

SILVER SURFER #1
(W) Dan Slott (A) Michael Allred, Michael Allred 'NEW DAWN' The universe is big. Bigger than you could ever imagine. And the SILVER SURFER, the lone sentinel of the skyways, is about to discover that the best way to see it... is with someone else. Meet the Earth Girl who's challenged the Surfer to go beyond the boundaries of the known Marvel U-- into the strange, the new, and the utterly fantastic! Anywhere and Everywhere... Hang On! THE SILVER SURFER

STARLIGHT #2 CVR B PARLOV (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Goran Parlov. Duke McQueen once saved an alien world from destruction-but it happened in a place nobody believes in, during a time nobody remembers. Surrounded by memories of his late wife and his happier past, Duke's days as a hero are long gone...or so he thinks! Now, a young visitor from the world Duke once saved is coming to him with a desperate plea for help. It's one last chance at adventure for Duke, and another chapter to unfold in the ever-expanding Millarworld Universe!

UNWRITTEN VOL 2 APOCALYPSE #4 (MR)
“War Stories,” part 3 of 3. Sometimes the closest thing you can find to a friend is your enemy’s enemy. But when Tom tries to enlist the help of Madame Rausch, he discovers that she’s already fighting a war of her own.

ALL NEW GHOST RIDER #1

KICK-ASS 3 #7 (OF 8) (MR)

MIRACLEMAN #4
Orígenes y revelaciones.

QUANTUM & WOODY #1
Hace mucho tiempo, Eric y Henderson eran inseparables. Hermanos adoptivos. Mejores amigos. Mentes brillantes.
my drawing (final version) / mi dibujo (versión final)

SANDMAN OVERTURE #2 (OF 6) CVR A (MR)

SIDEKICK #6 CVR A MANDRAKE & HIFI (MR)

This is a strange month for me. I’m sad because I read the final issue of Young Avengers, the most fantastic series I’ve been able to find in recent years. And at the same time I’m happy, thrilled actually, to (re)read the first issue of Miracleman; many have complained about the 5.99 price tag, but I must remind you all that the original Eclipse edition of issue # 1 doesn’t sell for less than 8 dollars and subsequent issues can range anywhere from 15 to 225 dollars (or more); so 5.99, (and 4.99 for the rest of the series) seems quite reasonable. Let’s keep taking about first issues. Avengers World # 1 was good (and I absolutely loved to see Star Brand in it!). All-New X-Factor wasn’t as great as I hoped it would be, and the art was a bit off-putting. Vertigo’s Dead Boy Detectives, on the other hand, was quite interesting. Nevertheless, if I had to choose the best comic of the month, that award would go to Detective Comics # 27. It’s so awesome. I promise I’ll review it. And now, without further ado, here are January comics as per solicitations.

ALL NEW X-FACTOR #1

Led by mutant mistress of magnetism, Polaris, the team uses its corporate backing for the betterment of society. With her half-brother Quicksilver, notorious thief, Gambit, and more by her side, can Polaris trust that her corporate masters really have good intentions?

AVENGERS WORLD #1
(W) Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer (A) Stefano Caselli (CA) John Cassaday 'TROUBLE MAP' Earth's Mightiest Heroes have returned from the stars-- but on the world they left behind, new threats have emerged, and The Avengers will be tested like never before. In one cataclysmic day, the face of the Marvel Universe will change forever-- and the fight for Earth's future will begin. A globe-spanning epic of empires and armies, and the brave few who stand between them and us.

DEAD BOY DETECTIVES #1 (MR)
(W) Toby Litt, Mark Buckingham (A) Mark Buckingham, Gary Erskine (CA) Mark Buckingham From the pages of THE SANDMAN, Neil Gaiman's dead boys get their own monthly series! As fans of storybook detectives, Edwin Paine (died 1916) and Charles Rowland (died 1990) will take on any and all mysteries - including their own untimely deaths! The dead boys head back to St. Hilarions, where bullying headmasters continue to rule the school. But when they investigate the lingering mysteries of their own deaths, they meet a young girl named Crystal whose tech skills and strange link to the undead earn her a place as a new detective. DEAD BOY DETECTIVES is a fast-paced adventure series that takes us from the bustling streets of contemporary London to Japanese-inspired video games and dangerous worlds perched somewhere between the now and nevermore.

DETECTIVE COMICS #27

Plus, all-new stories by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy, Peter J. Tomasi and Guillem March, Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen, Gregg Hurwitz and Neal Adams and more! Also in this issue, John Layman and Jason Fabok kick off the new storyline 'GOTHTOPIA'! It's a bright, shiny, happy place where dreams come true...as long as you don't look at things too closely.

MIRACLEMAN #1

And what will the government do to shut her down? From the Eisner Award-winning team behind DAREDEVIL and MOON KNIGHT! 40 PGS./Mature

______________________________________________________________________________________________

"Avengers World" # 1 estuvo bien (y me encantó ver a Star Brand).

ALL NEW X-FACTOR #1
