Sandman Overture # 6 - Neil Gaiman & J.H. Williams III

I started reading The Sandman in 2008, many years after the series was originally published. I felt immediately fascinated by Neil Gaiman’s proposal as well as seduced by the oneiric realm of Morpheus, Dream of the Endless. So it was quite a surprise for me to find out, in 2013, that Gaiman would return to his most famous creation, in a 6-issue miniseries titled “Sandman Overture”. 

I know one day I must write about The Sandman, in the same way that I must write about Watchmen and many other hugely relevant comics from that era. The good thing for me is that now that I’m done with the prequel I can jump straight ahead to Vertigo’s most renowned series. According to Gaiman “I decided that it would be really interesting to create a character who was Dream, who was the incarnation of the act of dreaming. He's one of a family of seven siblings, beginning with Destiny and Death and ending with Despair and Delirium. He is incredibly stiff, slightly pompous, rather lonely ... and obsessed by rules, and has very little sense of himself”. All these elements are present in “Sandman Overture”, and perhaps that’s why the magic is still there.

As we saw in previous issues, the entire universe is about to disappear. But Sandman has reunited 1,000 dreamers from every corner of the galaxy, aliens of every conceivable form and shape, creatures of all kinds, are ready to close their eyes and recreate the universe in their dreams. “Because it is the nature of dreams, and only of dreams, to define reality” explains Desire, and indeed, with the help of Delirium and after an incredible sacrifice, the cosmos is restored, the book of Destiny is re-written, Destruction disappears and Death no longer has to attend the infinite demise of entire worlds. The only one of the Endless that is unhappy with this outcome is Despair, as she can’t savor the misery and desolation of others anymore. 

1,000 dreamers / 1,000 soñadores

“If you read the whole of Sandman incredibly carefully, you would have learned, before Sandman #1, he was returning from a distant galaxy in triumph of a sort, tried beyond measure, exhausted beyond everything. But you never knew why”, affirms Gaiman. So it’s no wonder that the last page of Sandman Overture is the opening sequence of The Sandman # 1 (originally published in 1988).

Dream and Delirium / Sueños y Delirio

I’m sure some readers out there are wondering why a 6-issue miniseries took almost 3 years to be completed and the answer is simple. J.H. Williams III’s exquisite art demanded months of preparation, months of thorough work, months of careful execution. All this effort is more than evident in the pages of Sandman Overture, here every panel is a like a piece of fine jewelry, an artistic delight that we should savor slowly. This final issue is as impressive as the others and perhaps even more so. It’s such a pleasure to look at this comic, to admire the absolutely imaginative panel structure, to be amazed at the creativity and talent of an artist that can combine multiple styles and a plethora of illustration techniques to achieve the most impressive results. The end of Sandman Overture is the beginning of The Sandman, and perhaps that means I should start planning on reviewing the entire series… because I am always fascinated by dreams, and like Neil Gaiman said once “A book is a dream that you hold in your hands”, and it’s so rewarding to hold such dreams.

Sé que algún día tengo que escribir sobre “The Sandman”, de la misma manera que debo escribir sobre “Watchmen” y muchos otros cómics enormemente relevantes de aquella época. Lo bueno para mí es que ahora que he terminado con la precuela puedo aterrizar directamente en la serie más renombrada de vértigo. De acuerdo con Gaiman “decidí que sería realmente interesante crear un personaje que fuese Sueño, la encarnación del acto de soñar. Él es parte de una familia de siete hermanos, comenzando con Destino y Muerte y terminando con Desesperación y Delirio. Él es increíblemente rígido, ligeramente pomposo, bastante solitario... y obsesionado por las reglas, y con poco conocimiento de sí mismo”. Todos estos elementos están presentes en “Sandman Overture”, y tal vez es por eso que la magia sigue ahí.

Pero Sandman ha reunido a 1,000 soñadores de todos los rincones de la galaxia, alienígenas de todas las formas imaginables, criaturas de todo tipo, y ellos están dispuestos a cerrar los ojos y volver a crear el universo a partir de sus sueños. “Porque es la naturaleza de los sueños, y sólo de los sueños, definir la realidad”, explica Deseo, y, de hecho, con la ayuda de Delirio y después de un sacrificio increíble, el cosmos es restaurado, el libro de Destino se reescribe, Destrucción desaparece y Muerte ya no tiene que asistir a la inacabable extinción de mundos enteros. La única de los Eternos que no está contenta con este resultado es Desesperación, ya que no podrá disfrutar la miseria y la desolación de los demás.

Estoy seguro que algunos lectores se preguntarán por qué una miniserie de 6 ejemplares demoró casi 3 años en ser completada y la respuesta es sencilla. El exquisito arte de J. H. Williams III exigió meses de preparación, meses de trabajo minucioso, meses de cuidadosa ejecución. Todo este esfuerzo es más que evidente en las páginas de “Sandman Overture”, aquí cada viñeta es una como una pieza de joyería fina, un deleite artístico que debemos saborear lentamente. Este último número es tan impresionante como los demás y tal vez aún más. Es un placer mirar este cómic, admirar la estructura absolutamente novedosa de las viñetas; y sorprenderse por la creatividad y el talento de un artista que capaz de combinar varios estilos y una gran cantidad de técnicas de ilustración para lograr los resultados más impresionantes. El fin de “Sandman Overture” es el comienzo de “The Sandman”, y tal vez eso significa que debería empezar a reseñar la serie original... porque siempre me han fascinado los sueños, tal como dijo Neil Gaiman alguna vez: “Un libro es un sueño que puedes sujetar con tus manos”, y es tan gratificante poder sujetar semejantes sueños.

Airboy - James Robinson & Greg Hinkle

I seem to have a nose for polemical titles. I have pre-ordered many books that proved to be the source of heated debates and, in my opinion, wherever I find controversy, I also find something else: the unaltered and uncensored voice of a creator. Whether you love it or hate it, if a comic book is controversial it means it has had a profound effect on the readers. You don’t participate passionately in a discussion unless you’re talking about something you really care about (doesn’t matter if you’re criticizing it or praising it).

So I’m glad to have been able to fine-tune my instincts towards series that are not received with indifference. And certainly, Airboy is the kind of miniseries that took everyone by surprise. Airboy is “a depraved misappropriation of a delightful Golden Age character” (Gerry Duggan) with “riotous humor” (Joe Keatinge); it’s also “As insanely imaginative as it is cringe-inducingly honest” (Brian K. Vaughan), “inventive, confessional, fun and full of character” (Rick Remender) and “Profane, disgusting and utterly brilliant. The ultimate NSFW comic book” (Jeff Lemire).

If you have a controversial miniseries and at the same time you have earned the compliments of such renowned authors, then you’re probably doing something right. Airboy is the best comic Robinson has written in years, and I think his narrative strength comes from two solid foundations: in the first place, Robinson’s knowledge and understanding of the Golden Age of comics (it’s no coincidence that his most famous works are “The Golden Age”, an Elseworlds project for DC and “Starman” a revitalized version of a classic hero); and in addition to that, the autobiographical and satirical components that define this particular tale of debauchery, redemption and introspection. 

A lot of alcohol and drugs / un montón de alcohol y drogas

The protagonists are James Robinson (the writer), Greg Hinkle (the artist) and Airboy (the old-school superhero). James Robinson is confronting his insecurities as a writer and his marital problems, and although this is a fictional setting, his words still ring true. His complaints about the current state of the industry are very similar to the opinions expressed by many writers that have abandoned DC and/or Marvel Comics in recent years. “I hate being at DC right now […] My career at DC is going nowhere. I’m in my decline. I know it. People reading my books can tell, from the quality of my work slipping, I’m sure. So, I drink and do drugs and pretend it’s glamorous”. As Robinson has explained in an open letter “I intentionally portray myself in the worst light possible and as the worst kind of person”, so obviously in real life the British writer isn’t snorting cocaine or having sex with transvestites 24/7, but despite the hyperbolic façade, Airboy’s content is still shockingly authentic “this series is a semi-autobiographical piece of meta-fiction that shows me at a self-destructive and unhappy time in my life before I sobered up”, admits the author.

The naked truth / la verdad desnuda

Airboy, however, isn’t simply a fascinating introspective exercise. As I have mentioned, it also gravitates around the notion of a man redeeming himself. For Robinson, everything begins when he meets artist Greg Hinkle. They have received a very generous offer to reboot / revamp Airboy, a superhero created in the 40s that stopped being relevant in the 50s… a character no one has heard about in more than half a century. And before they can even wrap their heads around the idea, suddenly Airboy is there. A noble adventurer of the Golden Age, a savior, a clean-cut do-gooder who, at first, thinks Robinson and Hinkle are either supervillains or evil stooges. The classic hero is completely befuddled, unable to recognize or understand the world as it is now. And slowly but surely, the writer and artist start corrupting the innocence of yesteryear’s champion. After making Airboy try drugs, they persuade him to have sex with a transvestite. Naïve as ever, the young man enjoys getting a blowjob from an expert mouth, but is completely disgusted when he finds out the “lady” he’s about to fuck actually has a penis. 

Sick and tired of our reality, Airboy decides to use his powers to take Robinson and Hinkle to 1945, to a world of honor and valor, to the final battle against Hitler’s army. Evidently Robinson and Hinkle cause more than a few problems (of a sordid nature, I might add). But even in the middle of a warzone, they come up with ideas not only to survive but also to change the course of their professional lives. 

I wasn’t familiar with Greg Hinkle as an artist, but I must say I absolutely loved his style. It really fits the tone of the story, and his use of colors is just spot on. His drawings are very expressive and full of life. And his covers are absolutely amazing. I hope to see Robinson and Hinkle working together again, they sure are an extraordinary creative team. After all, Airboy was one of the finest miniseries of 2015.

Parece que tengo buen olfato para los títulos polémicos. A menudo me he anticipado y comprado cómics que resultaron ser el origen de acalorados debates y, en mi opinión, allí donde hay controversia, también hay algo más: la voz sin alteraciones y sin censuras de un creador. Ya sea que te encante o que lo detestes, si un cómic es controversial eso significa que ha causado un profundo impacto en los lectores. La gente no participaría apasionadamente en una discusión a menos que esté hablando de algo que realmente le importa (al margen de estar haciendo críticas o alabanzas).

Airboy

Así que me alegra haber sido capaz de afinar mi radar y descubrir así series que han causado revuelo. Y ciertamente, “Airboy” es el tipo de miniserie que nos agarró a todos por sorpresa. Airboy es “una apropiación indebida y depravada de un encantador personaje de la Edad de Oro” (Gerry Duggan) con “humor desenfrenado” (Joe Keatinge); también es “demencialmente imaginativa y tan honesta que nos sacude” (Brian K. Vaughan), “inventiva, confesional, divertida y con mucho carácter” (Rick Remender) y “profana, repugnante y absolutamente brillante. El cómic para adultos definitivo” (Jeff Lemire).

Si se trata de una miniserie controversial y, al mismo tiempo, se ha ganado los elogios de autores tan renombrados, entonces muy probablemente vamos por buen camino. Airboy es el mejor cómic que Robinson ha escrito en años, y creo que su fuerza narrativa proviene de dos bases sólidas: en primer lugar, Robinson comprende y conoce muy bien la Edad de Oro de los cómics (no es ninguna coincidencia que sus obras más famosas sean “The Golden Age”, un proyecto Elseworlds para DC y “Starman” una versión revitalizada de un héroe clásico); en segundo lugar, los componentes autobiográficos y satíricos que definen este particular relato de libertinaje, redención e introspección.

Los protagonistas son James Robinson (el escritor), Greg Hinkle (el artista) y Airboy (el superhéroe tradicional). James Robinson se enfrenta a sus inseguridades como escritor y a sus problemas maritales, y aunque se trata de un escenario ficticio, sus palabras transmiten verdad. Sus quejas sobre el estado actual de la industria son muy similares a las opiniones expresadas por muchos escritores que han abandonado DC y/o Marvel Comics en los últimos años. “Odio estar en DC actualmente [...] Mi carrera en DC no va a ningún lado. Estoy en declive. Lo sé. Estoy seguro que la gente que lee mis cómics se da cuenta que la calidad de mi trabajo va cuesta abajo. Por eso me emborracho y me drogo y finjo que eso es glamoroso”. Como Robinson ha explicado en una carta abierta “intencionalmente me retrato a mí mismo de la peor manera posible y como el peor tipo de persona”, así que, obviamente, en la vida real el escritor británico no está inhalando cocaína o follando con travestis las 24 horas del día, pero a pesar de esta fachada hiperbólica, el contenido de Airboy sigue siendo sorprendentemente auténtico “esta serie es una pieza semi-autobiográfica de meta-ficción que me muestra en una etapa autodestructiva e infeliz de mi vida, antes de lograr estar sobrio”, admite el autor.

Even a superhero has needs... / incluso un superhéroe tiene necesidades...

“Airboy”, sin embargo, es más que un fascinante ejercicio de introspección. Como ya he mencionado, también gravita en torno a la noción de redención. Para Robinson, todo comienza cuando conoce al artista Greg Hinkle. Ellos reciben una oferta muy generosa para relanzar/renovar a Airboy, un superhéroe creado en los 40s que dejó de ser relevante en los 50s... un personaje del que nadie ha oído hablar en más de medio siglo. Y antes de que puedan planear cómo sería ese cómic, repentinamente Airboy está allí. Un noble aventurero de la Edad de Oro, un salvador, un bienhechor de fuerte fibra moral quien, al principio, piensa que Robinson y Hinkle son supervillanos o secuaces del mal. El héroe clásico está completamente aturdido, incapaz de reconocer o entender el mundo tal como es ahora. Y poco a poco, el escritor y el artista comienzan a corromper la inocencia de este campeón de antaño. Después de hacer que Airboy pruebe drogas, lo convencen para que tenga sexo con un travesti. Ingenuo como siempre, el joven disfruta la mamada de una boca experta, pero se siente completamente asqueado cuando descubre que la “señorita” que está a punto de follar en realidad tiene un pene.

Hastiado de nuestra realidad, Airboy decide utilizar sus poderes para llevar a Robinson y Hinkle a 1945, a un mundo de honor y valor, a la batalla final contra el ejército de Hitler. Evidentemente, Robinson y Hinkle causan más de un problema (de naturaleza sórdida, debo añadir). Pero incluso en medio de una zona de guerra, encuentran la inspiración no sólo para sobrevivir sino también para cambiar el curso de sus vidas profesionales.

No estaba familiarizado con Greg Hinkle como artista, pero tengo que decir que me encantó su estilo. Realmente se acopla al tono de la historia, y su uso de colores es simplemente estupendo. Sus dibujos son muy expresivos y llenos de vida. Y sus portadas son absolutamente asombrosas. Espero ver a Robinson y Hinkle trabajando juntos nuevamente, son un equipo creativo extraordinario. Después de todo, Airboy fue una de las mejores miniseries del 2015.

November comics / cómics de noviembre

November sure brought plenty of good surprises. Airboy comes to its irreverent conclusion (I really enjoyed it), and there were some truly interesting first issues, such as Millar’s Huck and Aaron’s Doctor Strange (in fact, the first two chapters in this new saga of the Sorcerer Supreme were a lot of fun). The Puma Blues HC is a gorgeous edition (Zulli is such an amazing artist and this is the kind of book I’ll treasure forever). The best comic of the month is The Goddamned #1 by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guéra (intense story and wonderful art: a must read!). So now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:  

AIRBOY #4 (of 4) (MR)

Hubo muchas buenas sorpresas en noviembre. “Airboy” llega a su irreverente conclusión (realmente la disfruté), y hubo algunos primeros números realmente interesantes, como “Huck” de Millar y “Doctor Strange” de Aaron (de hecho, los primeros dos capítulos de esta nueva saga del Hechicero Supremo fueron muy divertidos). El tomo en tapa dura de “The Puma Blues” HC es una edición preciosa (Zulli es un artista tan asombroso y este el tipo de libro que atesoraré para siempre). El mejor cómic del mes es “The Goddamned” #1 de Jason Aaron y R.M. Guéra (argumento intenso y arte maravilloso: ¡imprescindible!). Así que sin mayores preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de noviembre:

David LaChapelle - Fotografías 1984-2013 (MAC)

It is curious how things turn out sometimes. In the beginning of 2014 I was drinking a glass of wine next to the Marquise Agatha Ruiz de la Prada in the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), but this year I wasn’t present in the opening night of David LaChapelle’s exhibit. I wish I could’ve been there, as it would have meant so much to actually meet the artist.

“Photographs 1984 - 2013” is a fascinating selection of LaChapelle’s exquisite works. With a very particular sensibility, the pupil of Andy Warhol celebrates pop references and historic iconography while subverting traditional religious imagery. Controversial for some, or simple shocking for others, the American artist once again shows why he has been at the center of many polemic debates.

Of course, the artist’s irreverence is also evident in his collages / reconstructions. His victims are Marilyn Monroe, Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher. Certainly, his critique to consumerism is a paramount aspect of his proposal. For instance, in “Deluge” we can see the biblical flood causing panic amongst the population, but perhaps the destruction of major brands is the scariest part of this work (the logos of Starbucks, Burger King and Gucci are destroyed and under the water). 

Growing up as a gay teenager in North Carolina must have been a tough experience, and LaChapelle has affirmed more than once that he was a victim of bullying. However, years later, he would become one of the most renowned celebrity photographers. Many famous Hollywood actors have enthusiastically agreed to be photographed by the American artist (Leonardo DiCaprio, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz). No matter how suggestive or erotic the approach was, singers like Whitney Houston, Britney Spears or Eminem have also participated in LaChapelle’s projects, as well as supermodels (Naomi Campbell) and former TV stars (Pamela Anderson).

I would also like to mention "Fleur du mal", one of my favorite compositions. A reference to Baudelaire's poetry and to the concept of paradise lost, this is the kind of original idea that one can treasure.

GAIA

La semana pasada decidí visitar el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC). Desde que se inauguró este nuevo espacio cultural en Barranco he tenido la oportunidad de ver bastantes muestras aunque debo admitir que pocas me han parecido tan fascinantes como la actual “Fotografías 1984 - 2013” del artista estadounidense David LaChapelle. Habría que felicitar a Álvaro Roca Rey, director del museo, por concretar una iniciativa que se venía gestando desde hacía buen tiempo.

LaChapelle es un artista controversial, no apto para todo público. Y luego de observar sus extraordinarias fotografías resulta evidente por qué ha causado tanta polémica. LaChapelle es, ciertamente, un provocador. Subvierte, por ejemplo, la iconografía religiosa al sustraerla de su contexto clásico, reinterpretándola en clave postmoderna, no desprovista de cierto desparpajo y, desde luego, fuertes dosis de parodia.

DELUGE

El diluvio universal, en manos del norteamericano, se convierte en la crisis del capitalismo. “Deluge” (obra de gran formato) nos muestra a asustados hombres y mujeres que intentan salvarse de la gran inundación. Las que definitivamente no se salvan son las grandes marcas: los logos de Starbucks, Burger King y Gucci aparecen destrozados y sumergidos bajo el agua, asimismo el Caesar's Palace, emblemático casino de Las Vegas, está totalmente destruido.

El artista también juega con otros arquetipos cristianos. El arcángel y Lucifer se transforman en Michael Jackson y en un lujurioso demonio. La Pietá no está protagonizada por Jesús y la virgen sino por Kurt Cobain y Courtney Love. Como discípulo de Andy Warhol, LaChapelle aprendió desde muy joven a aprovechar las referencias a la cultura pop, reinventándolas con astucia e ironía.

La muestra abarca impresionantes composiciones como “Gaia” (es decir Gea, el planeta Tierra) o “Fleur du mal” (en clara alusión a "Las flores del mal" de Baudelaire). También, desde luego, la irreverencia del artista se hace evidente en sus atípicos collages / reconstrucciones: las víctimas incluyen a Marilyn Monroe, Su Majestad la Reina Elizabeth II y Margaret Thatcher.

Otra magnífica sección incluye a actrices de Hollywood (Cameron Díaz, Drew Barrymore) supermodelos (Naomi Campbell) y cantantes (Eminem, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston). Pese a las curiosas exigencias del fotógrafo, los famosos parecieran someterse con gusto al lente de LaChapelle. 

La muestra permanecerá abierta al público hasta el próximo mes. Sin duda merece ser visitada.
