The Highest House # 4-6 - Mike Carey & Peter Gross

Is slavery a mental state or a legal status? If we believe it’s the former then we’ll also come to the conclusion that slavery is, somehow, intrinsic to the nature of certain individuals, if we believe it’s the latter, then we’ll come to the conclusion that societies must change and kingdoms must fall, before freedom can be achieved. As we saw in the first 3 issues of The Highest House, Moth is a child that is sold as a slave by his mother. 

For Moth, freedom can be both: a mental state and a legal status (he’s, after all, a slave of the Aldercrest clan). Moth is a clever boy, and with the assistance of Obsidian, one of the ancient gods of Ossaniul, he starts climbing up the social ladder and becomes the assistant of Lord Demini. However, if his legal status is in the process of changing, the real transformation occurs on an intellectual level: when Moth learns how to read he’s finally able to set his mind free. 

Sometimes we underestimate the power of reading and the power of writing, but for Moth, the possibility to read a book is a unique experience, as we can see in the cover of issue # 4 (published in May 2018) by Yuko Shimizu, who had already worked with Carey on The Unwritten creating what Oliver Sava describes as “covers that were delicate, dramatic, and brimming with raw emotion”. In this particular cover we can see, according to Sava, “Moth reading a book atop a gargoyle jutting out of a stone tower, and it’s an image that radiates freedom and joy. The doves flying around Moth accentuate this feeling of liberation, and the boy’s happiness is intensified by the contrast of his relaxed body language and soft smile with the harsh faces carved into the tower”. The covers of issues 5 and 6 (June and July 2018) are also spectacular. There is a good reason why Shimizu won the Arion’s Achievement Award for best cover artist.
  

Lady Shurubai

Highest House continues to amaze me. It’s unusual to find such a mature combination of fantasy and philosophical issues. These are, after all, “stories about underclass boys and upper-class women […] and the cruel realities of the class system”, according to Joshua Davison. We can easily immerse ourselves in what Davison considers a “complex and mysterious world of warring families and gods lurking in the shadows”.  

Davison affirms that “Peter Gross’ artwork remains both gorgeous and complex, as he makes many wide shots of the Highest House both intricate and beautiful. There are many little details and things to discover in the world of the comic. Fabian Alquier’s color art is also quite good, and it continues to create the cold and ethereal atmosphere of this world”, and it’s true. It would be difficult to find a more beautifully illustrated comic book on the stands in 2018. 

As Sava clarifies, “the adolescent Moth has just experienced his first big heartbreak after learning the princess he lusts after is in love with her handmaiden. The issue reveals more about the forbidden romance, and upon learning the pain these women have had to endure to be together, Moth’s resentment is replaced by sympathy. Moth is faced with constant pressure from a dark force, but he’s always drawn to the light”. Moth will try to replace love with sex, and due to his elevated status it’ll be easier for him to have sex with other slaves. 

Lord Demini

The battle between the clans and the horrific secrets that Moth discovers about Obsidian put the protagonist under pressure, but once again, thanks to his resourcefulness, he’s able to help Lord Demini. After 6 issues, Mike Carey has recaptured all the magic, and I feel just as fascinated as I felt when I was reading The Unwritten on a monthly basis. I can’t wait for the next volume of The Highest House, I consider it the best new series of 2018 and I highly recommend it.

the battle begins / comienza la batalla

Para Moth, la libertad puede ser tanto un estado mental como un estatus legal (después de todo, él es un esclavo del clan Aldercrest). Moth es un chico inteligente, y con la ayuda de Obsidian, uno de los antiguos dioses de Ossaniul, comienza a ascender en la escala social y se convierte en el asistente de Lord Demini. Sin embargo, si su estado legal está en proceso de cambiar, la verdadera transformación se produce a un nivel intelectual: cuando Moth aprende a leer, finalmente es capaz de liberar su mente.

A veces subestimamos el poder de la lectura y el poder de la escritura, pero para Moth, la posibilidad de leer un libro es una experiencia única, como podemos ver en la portada del número 4 (publicado en mayo del 2018), realizada por Yuko Shimizu, quien ya había trabajado con Carey en The Unwritten, creando lo que Oliver Sava describe como “portadas que eran delicadas, dramáticas y rebosantes de emoción cruda”. En esta portada en particular podemos ver, según Sava, “a Moth leyendo un libro sobre una gárgola que sobresale de una torre de piedra, y es una imagen que irradia libertad y alegría. Las palomas que vuelan alrededor de Moth acentúan este sentimiento de liberación, y la felicidad del niño se intensifica por el contraste de su lenguaje corporal relajado y su suave sonrisa frente a los rostros duros tallados en la torre”. Las portadas de los números 5 y 6 (junio y julio de 2018) también son espectaculares. Hay una buena razón por la que Shimizu ganó el Arion’s Achievement Award a mejor portadista.

Moth remembers the past / Moth recuerda el pasado

Highest House sigue sorprendiéndome. Es inusual encontrar una combinación tan madura de fantasía y temas filosóficos. Estas son, después de todo, “historias sobre niños de clase baja y mujeres de clase alta [...] y las crueles realidades del sistema de clases”, según Joshua Davison. Podemos sumergirnos fácilmente en lo que Davison considera un “complejo y misterioso mundo de familias en guerra y dioses que acechan en las sombras”.

Davison afirma que “el arte de Peter Gross sigue siendo hermoso y complejo, más aún en las tomas amplias de Highest House, que son tanto intrincadas como hermosas. Hay muchos pequeños detalles y cosas por descubrir en el mundo del cómic. El color de Fabian Alquier también es bastante bueno, y continúa creando la atmósfera fría y etérea de este mundo”, y es cierto. Sería difícil encontrar un cómic más bellamente ilustrado en el 2018.

Obsidian

Como aclara Sava, “el adolescente Moth acaba de experimentar su primer gran dolor después de enterarse de que la princesa que desea está enamorada de su doncella. El capítulo revela más sobre el romance prohibido, y al enterarse del dolor que estas mujeres han tenido que soportar para estar juntas, el resentimiento de Moth es reemplazado por simpatía. Moth se enfrenta a la presión constante de una fuerza oscura, pero siempre se siente atraído por la luz”. Moth intentará reemplazar el amor por el sexo, y debido a su elevado estatus, será más fácil para él tener sexo con algunas esclavas.

The power of Obsidian / el poder de Obsidian

La batalla entre los clanes y los horribles secretos que Moth descubre sobre Obsidian presionan al protagonista, pero una vez más, gracias a su ingenio, es capaz de ayudar a Lord Demini. Después de 6 números, Mike Carey ha recapturado toda la magia, y me siento tan fascinado como me sentía cuando leía The Unwritten mensualmente. No puedo esperar al próximo volumen de The Highest House, y considero que es la mejor nueva serie del 2018; la recomiendo encarecidamente.

December Films

A masterpiece of horror, A Quiet Place (2018) is the kind of film that reminds me why this is such a fascinating genre. Director John Krasinski sets the story in a post-apocalyptic future, Earth has been overrun by alien creatures that use sound to locate their prey. Only a few humans survive. John Krasinski and Emily Blunt (Wild Target) are a married couple with children, and they have managed to survive for years after adopting a life of complete silence. Krasinski excels both as a filmmaker as well as an actor, and Blunt gives out an astonishing performance. The film creates a powerful and harrowing atmosphere from the very first sequence, and it builds up from there, with an impressive level of intensity. Throughout the story, we get to know the characters and we care deeply for them; we might take our voices for granted, they don’t. Silence guarantees survival, sound summons death. And in the end, the connection created between characters and viewers is very strong. Definitely one of the best films from 2018.

Johannes Roberts’ The Strangers: Prey At Night (2018) is a sequel of the fascinating The Strangers (2008); although it isn’t as shocking or disturbing as the first one, it is still a very solid horror movie. This time, the group of killers has targeted a family that is trying to relax in a secluded vacation spot. Martin Henderson and Christina Hendricks are the parents, and Lewis Pullman and Bailee Madison are their teenaged children. Even if there are some predictable moments and a few minor plot holes, overall I think this sequel respects the spirit of the original The Strangers.

David Leitch's Deadpool 2 (2018) was absolutely hilarious. I loved all the pop culture references, the witty banter, the irreverent jokes and of course all the R rated material. The Basic Instincts scene, for instance, was one of my favorites, but also the quick and complete obliteration of X-Force, or Deadpool’s traveling back in time and killing the lame version of himself that appeared in the second Wolverine movie; but even simpler moments like the X-Men cameo in Professor X’s mansion or Tony Robbins motivational speech simply cracked me up. Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as the Merc With a Mouth and Josh Brolin is Cable, a mutant from a dystopian future. Deadpool 2 made me laugh out loud so much that I’d definitely see it again. 

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2018, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

Una obra maestra del horror, A Quiet Place (2018) es el tipo de película que me recuerda por qué este es un género tan fascinante. El director John Krasinski establece la historia en un futuro post-apocalíptico, la Tierra ha sido invadida por criaturas alienígenas que utilizan el sonido para localizar a sus presas. Sólo unos pocos humanos sobreviven. John Krasinski y Emily Blunt (Wild Target) son una pareja casada con hijos, y han logrado sobrevivir durante años después de adoptar una vida de completo silencio. Krasinski sobresale como cineasta y también como actor, y Blunt ofrece una actuación asombrosa. La película crea una atmósfera poderosa y desgarradora desde la primera secuencia, y a partir de ahí el suspenso aumenta, con un impresionante nivel de intensidad. A lo largo de la historia, llegamos a conocer a los personajes y nos preocupamos profundamente por ellos; nosotros damos por sentadas nuestras voces, ellos no. El silencio garantiza la supervivencia, el sonido convoca a la muerte. Y al final, la conexión creada entre los personajes y los espectadores es muy fuerte. Definitivamente una de las mejores películas del 2018.

The Strangers: Prey At Night (2018) de Johannes Roberts es una secuela de la fascinante The Strangers (2008); aunque no es tan impactante ni perturbadora como la primera, sigue siendo una película de terror muy sólida. Esta vez, el grupo de asesinos ataca a una familia que está tratando de relajarse en un aislado lugar de vacaciones. Martin Henderson y Christina Hendricks son los padres, y Lewis Pullman y Bailee Madison son sus hijos adolescentes. Incluso si hay algunos momentos predecibles y algunos pequeños huecos argumentales, en general creo que esta secuela respeta el espíritu de The Strangers.

Deadpool 2 (2018), de David Leitch, fue absolutamente hilarante. Me encantaron todas las referencias a la cultura pop, las bromas ingeniosas, los chistes irreverentes y, por supuesto, todo el material clasificado para adultos. La escena de Instintos Básicos, por ejemplo, fue una de mis favoritas, pero también la eliminación rápida y completa de X-Force, o el viaje de Deadpool al pasado cuando mata a la versión cutre de sí mismo que apareció en la segunda película de Wolverine; pero incluso momentos más simples como el cameo de los X-Men en la mansión del Profesor X o el discurso motivacional de Tony Robbins, simplemente me hicieron reír. Ryan Reynolds retoma su papel como el Mercenario Bocazas y Josh Brolin es Cable, un mutante de un futuro distópico. Deadpool 2 me hizo reír a carcajadas tanto que definitivamente la volvería a ver.


El tiempo no es sino un delgado velo, sobre él nuestras siluetas se abultan o aligeran. Otro año va y viene en este atormentado blog y ello indudablemente merece que sopesemos apropiadamente nuestras experiencias cinematográficas. Que sea así, por ende, y dejadnos girar el torno y la rueda. Hablad, oh lectores, y escuchad bien, puesto que aún nos resta suficiente ingenio para sorprenderos. Se ha propuesto que debíamos encontrar posiciones para todas las imágenes en movimiento presentadas en el transcurso del 2018, y con mente ágil y conocimientos tanto en materia de directores como de actores, confiamos en que vosotros incluiréis nuestro juicio entre los mejores. Aqueste es nuestro testimonio... suficiente en nuestro pensamiento íntimo que estas apreciaciones, desparramadas al alimón, sean de la más noble disposición.

2018 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

Although I love all artistic expressions, the ninth art will always have a special place in my heart. Every time I get my box of comics I feel again like a wee lad in Christmas. It’s such a wonderful feeling. Even if I know exactly what I’ll find inside the box, it feels as if I were unwrapping a surprise present. So I open the box, I take out the comics. And I look at them and I smile. Yes, comics will always brighten up my day.

Every month more than 300 different titles are published in the American market, in addition to an equal amout of trade paperbacks and hardcovers. Of course, some are forgettable, but others challenge our imagination and reignite the spark of our curiosity. My purpose here is to highlight those works that have, indeed, inspired me. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the eighth annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

We all experience feelings, and we can sure remember the most intense ones. But can we make others experience anything similar to what we hold dear in our memories? I think only extraordinary writers are capable of doing that. And when we read their stories something inside of us is awakened. There are 3 excellent writers on my 2018 list: Mike Carey for his fascinating and extremely moving “The Highest House”, Marc Andreyko for his rather impressive “The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson” and Chip Zdarsky for “Marvel 2-In-One”.

I grew up surrounded by art, and that has helped me identity the true masters of pencil & inks. Of course, learning to draw has become very useful when I have to judge the artistic skills of others. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months and I think a reward is only fair: Lee Bermejo for his fantastic and pictoric take on “Batman: Damned”, Peter Gross for his stunning illustrations in “The Highest House” and Russell Dauterman for his clean lines and great compositions in “The Mighty Thor”. 

The sacred duty of a cover is simple: it has to be aesthetically superior to all other covers. The first thing we look at when holding a comic is the cover, and it has to be catchy, it has to be gorgeous. It isn’t easy to come across great covers on a monthly basis, but some artists have pleasantly surprised me with their output: Olivier Coipel for his astonishing “The Magic Order” cover art, in which intensity and elegant design masterfully come together; Jim Cheung for his spectacular and dramatic covers for “Marvel 2-In-One”; and Ramon Villalobos, a promising newcomer that has delighted me with his “Border Town”.

Some fans don’t pay attention to editors, but they work 24/7 to provide us with the best possible comics. In this case the award goes to Scott Dunbier (IDW) for putting together the superb color edition of “The One”.

After reading so many comics this year, it became really difficult to decide which one was the best. So I’ve considered only those published in 2018 (that, for instance, rules out classics like “Halo Jones”). So the 2018 Arion’s Achievement Award for Best Single Issue goes to The Highest House # 1, a fascinating first issue that creates unique characters and a complex universe.

“A Walk Through Hell” is the best ongoing series of the year. Garth Ennis’ new horror series is both shocking and truly unforgettable. Ennis pulls no punches in this controversial story which could only be read by mature readers.

There have been many wonderful miniseries like The Magic Order, Jeepers Creepers or Proxima Centauri but the prize goes to The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson, a heartfelt exploration of life as a former and powerless superhero. 

When I started with my nominations for New Series I immediately realized how many amazing first issues I had read. I loved Batman Damned, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Tempest and Border Town, but this award cannot be shared. So the one and only Best New Series is The Highest House. 

Halo Jones deserves as many praises as possible. It certainly is the Best Archival Collection / Reprint I bought this year. 2000AD should keep reprinting classic material in color for the first time! 

In addition to “A Walk Through Hell”, Aftershock Comics is publishing an amazing selection of titles which is why I think it deserves to be the best publisher of 2018. 

There are many interesting and informative websites about comics, but only a few are as useful as Comicvine.com I’m always amazed by the amount of information I can find there (even some of my own comics show up there) and I must admit I visit the site quite often. 

In 2018 we say goodbye to several prominent creators, more than ever before: Stan Lee, the creator of the Marvel Universe and the legendary ambassador of the 9th art, passed away in November. One of Stan Lee’s favorite personal creations was the Silver Surfer, and I would like to take a quote from the Herald of Galactus: “It is not given to us to know whether we shall succeed or not. In failure there is no disgrace. There can be but one ultimate shame… the cowardice of not having tried”. Stan Lee tried and succeeded, and because of him, we should all keep trying. Steve Ditko, the artist responsible for such major characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange passed away in June. Spider-Man is Marvel’s most important superhero and it was thanks to Lee and Ditko that thousands of readers were able to understand that with great power comes great responsibility. Norm Breyfogle was a wonderful artist who illustrated many classic Batman stories in the 80s, having read most of them I can affirm that his extraordinary talent marked an entire generation of readers. In 2014 Breyfogle suffered a debilitating stroke. Fans all over the world contributed money to help him cover his medical expenses (which, in a just and fair society, should’ve been covered by DC Comics), and I also made a contribution. It was the least I could do for an artist I respected and admired so much; he’ll be missed. Marie Severin was an important artist in Marvel Comics and a pioneer in an era in which most comic book creators were males. Gary Friedrich, creator of the original Ghost Rider, presented a lawsuit against the company in 2007, claiming ownership of the character he created. Instead of trying to come to an agreement with him, Marvel decided to take away 17,000 dollars from the veteran writer, and forbid him from selling Ghost Rider prints at conventions which, at the time of the lawsuit, was Gary’s only source of income.   

And thus 2018 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.

I bid thee farewell and long live the ninth art!

Aunque amo todas las expresiones artísticas, el noveno arte siempre tendrá un lugar especial en mi corazón. Cada vez que recibo mi caja de cómics me siento como un niño en Navidad. Es un sentimiento maravilloso. Incluso si sé exactamente lo que encontraré dentro de la caja, es como si estuviera desenvolviendo un regalo sorpresa. Así que abro la caja, saco los cómics. Y los miro y sonrío. Sí, los cómics siempre alegrarán mi día.

Cada mes, más de 300 títulos diferentes se publican en el mercado estadounidense, además de una cantidad similar de tomos recopilatorios. Por supuesto, algunos son olvidables, pero otros desafían nuestra imaginación y reavivan la chispa de nuestra curiosidad. Mi propósito aquí es resaltar aquellas obras que, de hecho, me han inspirado. Así que, sin más dilación, los invito a todos a la octava edición anual de los AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Todos tenemos sentimientos, y podemos recordar los más intensos. ¿Pero podemos hacer que otros experimenten algo similar a lo que apreciamos en nuestros recuerdos? Creo que solo los extraordinarios escritores son capaces de hacer eso. Y cuando leemos sus historias, algo dentro de nosotros se despierta. Hay 3 escritores excelentes en mi lista del 2018: Mike Carey por su fascinante y extremadamente conmovedor “The Highest House”, Marc Andreyko por su impresionante “The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson” y Chip Zdarsky por “Marvel 2-In-One”.

Crecí rodeado de arte, y eso me ha ayudado a identificar a los verdaderos maestros del lápiz y las tintas. Por supuesto, aprender a dibujar se ha vuelto muy útil cuando tengo que juzgar las habilidades artísticas de otros. 3 artistas han sobresalido durante los últimos 12 meses y creo que una recompensa es justa: Lee Bermejo por su fantástica versión pictórica de “Batman: Damned”, Peter Gross por sus bellas ilustraciones en “The Highest House” y Russell Dauterman por su líneas limpias y grandes composiciones en “The Mighty Thor”. 

El deber sagrado de una portada es simple: tiene que ser estéticamente superior a todas las demás portadas. Lo primero que miramos en un cómic es la portada, y tiene que ser atrayante, tiene que verse bien. No es fácil encontrar grandes portadas mensualmente, pero algunos artistas me han sorprendido gratamente con su producción: Olivier Coipel por sus asombrosas portadas de “The Magic Order”, en las que la intensidad y el diseño elegante se combinan con maestría; Jim Cheung por sus espectaculares y dramáticas portadas para “Marvel 2-In-One”; y Ramon Villalobos, un prometedor nuevo portadista que me ha dejado encantado con su “Border Town”.

Algunos fanáticos no prestan atención a los editores, pero ellos trabajan 24 horas al día para brindarnos los mejores cómics posibles. En este caso, el premio se le otorga a Scott Dunbier (IDW) por armar la magnífica edición a color de "The One".

Después de leer tantos cómics este año, se volvió muy difícil decidir cuál era el mejor. Así que sólo he considerado los publicados en 2018 (descartando, por ejemplo, clásicos como "Halo Jones"). De modo que el Arion’s Achievement Award  del 2018 al mejor número único va para The Highest House # 1, un primer número fascinante que crea personajes únicos y un universo complejo.

“A Walk Through Hell” es la mejor serie en curso del año. La nueva serie de terror de Garth Ennis es impactante y verdaderamente inolvidable. Ennis es brutalmente directo en esta controversial historia pensada sólo para lectores adultos.

Ha habido estupendas series limitadas como The Magic Order, Jeepers Creepers o Proxima Centauri, pero el premio es para The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson, una sincera exploración de la vida de un ex-superhéroe que pierde sus poderes.

Cuando comencé con mis nominaciones a nueva serie, me di cuenta inmediatamente de la cantidad de primeros números asombrosos que había leído. Me encantó Batman Damned, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Tempest y Border Town, pero este premio no se puede compartir. Así que la única y mejor serie nueva es The Highest House.

Halo Jones merece tantos elogios como sean posibles. ¡Ciertamente es la mejor obra coleccionada / reimpresión que compré este año. 2000AD debería seguir reimprimiendo material clásico por primera vez a colores.

Además de “A Walk Through Hell”, Aftershock Comics está publicando una increíble selección de títulos, por lo que creo que merece ser la mejor editorial del 2018.

Una de las creaciones personales favoritas de Stan Lee fue Silver Surfer, y me gustaría tomar una cita del Heraldo de Galactus: "No nos ha sido otorgado poder saber si tendremos éxito o no. En el fracaso no hay desgracia. Sólo puede haber una vergüenza final... la cobardía de no haberlo intentado”. Stan Lee lo intentó y tuvo éxito, y gracias a él, todos debemos seguir intentándolo. Steve Ditko, el artista responsable de personajes tan importantes como Spider-Man y Doctor Strange, falleció en junio. Spider-Man es el superhéroe más importante de Marvel y fue gracias a Lee y Ditko que miles de lectores comprendieron que un gran poder conlleva una gran responsabilidad. Norm Breyfogle fue un artista maravilloso que ilustró muchas historias clásicas de Batman en los 80s. Después de leerlas, puedo afirmar que su extraordinario talento marcó a toda una generación de lectores. En el 2014 Breyfogle sufrió un derrame cerebral debilitante. Fans de todo el mundo contribuyeron con dinero para ayudarlo a cubrir sus gastos médicos (que, en una sociedad justa y equitativa, deberían haber sido cubiertos por DC Comics), yo también hice una contribución. Era lo menos que podía hacer por un artista al que respetaba y admiraba tanto; será extrañado. Marie Severin fue una artista importante en Marvel Comics y una pionera en una era en la que la mayoría de los creadores de cómics eran hombres. Gary Friedrich, creador del original Ghost Rider, presentó una demanda contra la compañía en 2007, reclamando la propiedad del personaje que creó. En lugar de tratar de llegar a un acuerdo, Marvel decidió quitarle 17,000 dólares al veterano escritor y prohibirle que venda material de Ghost Rider en convenciones, algo que, en el momento de la demanda, representaba la única fuente de ingresos de Gary.
Y así el 2018 llega a su final. Hablad, hablad ahora, lectores. Si no sois tan malvados como un villano de Vodevil entonces, por todos los medios, desenvainad vuestra lengua. No seáis arrestados por discursos modestos, venid al frente y decidnos lo que está en vuestra mente a menos que oséis incurrir en la ira del dueño de esta taberna, escondida allende los reinos etéreos.
