Today is my birthday. And I’ve decided to celebrate it like I always do: sharing with you my most recent acquisitions. In this case, half a dozen of wonderful comic books. MPH and Starlight are amazing, and so far Slott’s Silver Surfer has been quite a pleasant surprise. This month I’m finally reading new Miracleman stories (issue # 6 was still included in my old Eclipse editions, but not issue # 7), so I’m even more excited than usual. The Unwritten continues to be the best ongoing series of 2014, improving with each new chapter (Mike Carey is so impressive). Nevertheless, the best issue of the month is The Wicked + The Divine, by Gillen & McKelvie. Brilliant stuff! And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations:

Miracleman Book 1: A Dream of Flying

In Miracleman Book 1: A Dream of Flying, Marvel collects issues 1 through 4 of the famed series. Marvel, of course, has included a substantial amount of material that I have yet to review (as most of it didn’t appear on the original Eclipse editions that I own).

Nevertheless, with the fifth issue I can safely assume that I have reviewed Miracleman Book 1, if not in its entirety at least in its most essential and fundamental aspects. 

Marvel’s edition of Miracleman #5 actually coincides with Eclipse’s Miracleman #4

In the Eclipse edition, the Red King Syndrome story was absurdly divided in 2 issues. Marvel, however, had the good idea of presenting them together in the same chapter.

En Miracleman Book 1: A Dream of Flying, Marvel reúne los números 1 al 5 de la afamada serie. Marvel, por supuesto, ha incluido una cantidad sustancial de material que aún no he reseñado (la mayor parte no aparecía en las ediciones originales de Eclipse que están en mis manos).

No obstante, con el quinto número seguramente puedo asumir que he reseñado el Libro 1 de Miracleman, tal vez no entero pero sí en sus aspectos más esenciales y fundamentales.

Over 2 years ago I begun an ambitious task: to review Alan Moore's Miracleman. 

I decided to do it without worrying about actually having the complete collection. 

I only bought the first issues and I reviewed them. 

But I loved them so much that I couldn't stop, and the problem is that each issue was considerably more expensive than the previous one. 

I stopped at issue #5, hating the economy and my very limited budget.

Today I'm a happier guy because Marvel is reprinting Miracleman and I can afford the new price: 4.99 per issue.

So instead of rewriting my reviews I have decided to share with you the new pages (which have been recolored and restored) and include a link to my old reviews. That way you get the best of both worlds. So Enjoy!

Hace 2 años empecé una ambiciosa tarea: reseñar el Miracleman de Alan Moore. 

Decidí hacerlo sin preocuparme por tener toda la colección.  

Sólo compré los primero números y los reseñé. 

Pero me gustaron tanto que no pude parar, y el problema es que cada número era considerablemente más caro que el anterior. 

Me detuve en el #5, odiando a la economía y a mi muy limitado presupuesto. 

Hoy día soy una persona más feliz porque Marvel está reimprimiendo Miracleman y el nuevo precio es asequible: 4.99 por ejemplar.

Así que en vez de rescribir mis reseñas he decidido compartir con ustedes las nuevas páginas (que han sido recoloreadas y restauradas) e incluir un link de mis viejas reseñas. De ese modo tienen lo mejor de dos mundos. Así que ¡a disfrutar!

X-Women - Claremont & Milo Manara

When I was in high school I loved summer vacations. It was a real pleasure to simply wake up late and read comic books for hours, without a care in the world. Back then, most of the comics I used to read were European publications. I was familiar with the work of legendary artists such as Milo Manara, Esteban Maroto, Horacio Altuna, Moebius, Eleuteri Serpieri, José Ortiz, Sergio Toppi, Vicente Segrelles, Tanino Liberatore, etc. All of them were truly magnificent and incredibly talented; in fact, their pages were so beautiful and attractive that no reader could resist being seduced.

Perhaps, one of the most famous artists of this list is the Italian Milo Manara, a man who became famous for his voluptuous women, for his lascivious paintings and for the unbridled sexual energy that seemed to permeate every one of his drawings. As an illustrator, only a few can rival against him, as a master of the erotic art, even fewer can compare to him.

So I was absolutely delighted when I heard Manara would be providing pencils and inks for X-Men, or rather for an X-Women one shot. I knew I had to buy it and so I did. Veteran writer Chris Claremont concocted a fun story, with slightly silly plot twists that are naïve enough to be entertaining. The Claremont of 2009 couldn’t be further away from the Claremont of the late 70s and early 80s, but maybe there is something refreshing in this unpretentious approach, in this lack of grandiloquence, in this methodology of amusement that seeks only to elicit a complicit smile from the readers.

“X-Women” starts with Rogue, Storm, Kitty Pride, Psylocke and Rachel Summers going to Greece for a much needed week of rest and relaxation. It’s such a joy to see these women, perhaps the most beautiful and powerful of the Marvel Universe, getting drunk and partying like there is no tomorrow. 

It seems to me that Claremont was comfortable enough with Manara that he simply left the driving seat to him and tagged along for the rest of the journey as a courteous copilot. And possibly that’s why we get to see some sequences that would be unthinkable in a regular X-Men comic. I’m talking about the constant presence of lesbian undertones and homoerotic elements. We have gay couples in bed, in a deluxe Mediterranean cruise; or openly lesbian couples lovingly fondling each other in the cosmopolite parties attended by the young mutants.

I think it’s evident that the star here is Manara, so I’d like to share with you some of my opinions. The cover is a wonderful example of visual attractiveness, and in addition to the sexy poses of the X-Women there is also a horror element (the skull), something that disturbs this otherwise paradisiac scenery.

Of course, just like so many of his predecessors, Manara takes every chance he has to redesign the uniform of the heroines. Rachel Summers and Kitty Pryde exude sensuality in their new outfits; in the waterfall scene, we get a delightful dance that shows the best attributes of Kitty Pryde, Rogue and Storm. Manara is also amazing when it comes to depicting lighthearted moments, Kitty’s incursion through the cruise is priceless. However, one of my favorite compositions is the double page spread in which the X-Women are captured and taken to an “airplane graveyard”. The final page is an extraordinary illustration that mixes pin-up sensibilities with an inimitable joie de vivre. Rogue, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Psylocke, Rachel Summers and Emma Frost look hotter than ever.

Cuando estaba en secundaria me encantaban las vacaciones de verano. Era un verdadero placer simplemente levantarme tarde y leer cómics por horas, sin ninguna preocupación. En ese entonces, la mayoría de cómics que leía eran publicaciones europeas. Estaba familiarizado con la obra de artistas legendarios como Milo Manara, Esteban Maroto, Horacio Altuna, Moebius, Eleuteri Serpieri, José Ortiz, Sergio Toppi, Vicente Segrelles, Tanino Liberatore, etc. Todos ellos eran verdaderamente magníficos e increíblemente talentosos; de hecho, sus páginas eran tan hermosas y atractivas que ningún lector podría resistirse a ser seducido.

Tal vez uno de los artistas más famosos de esta lista es el italiano Milo Manara, un hombre que se volvió famoso por sus mujeres voluptuosas, sus pinturas lascivas y por la energía sexual desatada que parecía permear cada uno de sus dibujos. Como ilustrador, sólo unos pocos pueden rivalizar con él, como maestro del arte erótico, son incluso menos los que pueden compararse a él.

Así que quedé encantado cuando escuché que Manara proporcionaría lápices y tintas a los X-Men, o más bien a las X-Women. Sabía que tenía que comprarlo y así lo hice. El veterano escritor Chris Claremont ensambla una divertida historia, con giros argumentales ligeramente tontos pero que tienen la ingenuidad necesaria para ser entretenidos. El Claremont de 2009 no podría estar más alejado del Claremont de fines de los 70s y principios de los 80s, pero quizás hay algo refrescante en este enfoque sin pretensiones, en esta ausencia de grandilocuencia, en esta metodología de lo ameno que busca únicamente provocar una sonrisa cómplice en los lectores.

“X-Women” empieza con Rogue, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Psylocke y Rachel Summers, quienes van a Grecia para una muy merecida semana de descanso y relajo. Es todo un disfrute ver a estas mujeres, tal vez las más bellas y poderosas del Universo Marvel, emborrachándose y yendo a fiestas sin parar.

Me parece que Claremont estaba lo suficientemente cómodo con Manara como para dejarle el asiento del conductor y acompañarlo durante el resto del viaje como un cortés copiloto. Y posiblemente por eso es que vemos algunas secuencias que serían impensables en un cómic habitual de X-Men. Hablo de la constante presencia de tonos lésbicos y elementos homoeróticos. Tenemos parejas gay en cama, en un crucero mediterráneo de lujo; o parejas abiertamente lesbianas que se acarician entre sí amorosamente en las fiestas cosmopolitas a las que asisten las jóvenes mutantes. 

Creo que es evidente que la estrella aquí es Manara, así que me gustaría compartir con vosotros algunas de mis opiniones. La portada es un maravilloso ejemplo de atractivo visual, y además de las poses sexy de las Mujeres X, también hay un elemento de terror (el cráneo), algo que perturba este escenario paradisíaco.

Desde luego, al igual que muchos de sus predecesores, Manara aprovecha todas las oportunidades para rediseñar el uniforme de las heroínas. Rachel Summers y Kitty Pryde exudan sensualidad en sus nuevos trajes; en la escena de la cascada, tenemos una deliciosa danza que muestra los mejores atributos de Kitty Pryde, Rogue y Storm. Manara también es asombroso en los momentos más desenfadados, la incursión de Kitty a través del crucero es inmejorable. Sin embargo, una de mis composiciones favoritas es la página doble en la que las Mujeres X son capturadas y llevadas a un "cementerio de aviones". La página final es una ilustración extraordinaria que mezcla sensibilidades de pin-up con un inimitable joie de vivre. Rogue, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Psylocke, Rachel Summers y Emma Frost se ven más candentes que nunca.

June films / películas de junio

I’m trying to remember how the hell I managed to watch over 20 different movies in a single month. I guess when you have a lot of free time on your hands everything seems possible. This month I’ve been able to watch only 2 films:

At last I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), an extraordinarily funny film based on the homonymous comics written and drawn by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Preserving the indy flavor of the original black and white publication, this filmic adaptation is also a delightful example of independent filmmaking. Michael Cera gives the best performance of his career as an immature and aspiring musician, as well as a tender and lovely boy that has considerable dating difficulties. With a wondrous young cast (Mark Webber, Alison Pill, Johnny Simmons, Erik Knudsen, etc.), some of my favorite young talents are also here, such as Kieran Culkin (his role as the best gay friend is heartwarming and hilarious). Director Edgar Wright has transformed a beloved graphic novel into something truly funny, original and unique, and he has even taken advantage of the cameos of well-known actors such as Chris Evans, Brandon Routh and Jason Schwartzman. 

On the other hand, The Normal Heart (2014) is a dramatic chronology of the first AIDS cases in the US and the tragic impact the HIV brought upon the gay community. Director Ryan Murphy had already dazzled me with a masterpiece like “Running with Scissors” and with such endearing and enduring TV teen comedies such as “Glee”. This time, however, he delves deep into the wound of a broken society, of a world and an era (New York in the early 80s) that reject homosexuality and that consider AIDS to be a divine punishment, a “gay cancer” that will purify the heterosexual orb. Mark Ruffalo should have won as many awards as possible for his brutally honest and strong portrayal of a gay activist who falls in love with Matt Bomer, a successful New York Times columnist. The film is really a love song that helps us find tolerance and understanding to a devastating situation that nobody knew how to handle back in the 80s. Many famous actors and actresses, both straight and gay, have collaborated in this special project: Julia Roberts, Alfred Molina, Finn Wittrock, Taylor Kitsch, etc. I especially value the collaboration of openly gay actors like Jonathan Groff (famous for his protagonic role in the gay-themed HBO series "Looking" which I absolutely love) or Jim Parsons (famous for his protagonic role in "The Big Bang Theory"). Heartbreaking, intense and absolutely sincere, The Normal Heart is one of the best films I’ve seen in 2014.

Estoy intentando recordar cómo demonios lograba ver más de 20 películas al mes. Supongo que cuando tienes mucho tiempo libre hay más posibilidades de hacer algo así. Este mes sólo vi 2 películas: 

Por fin vi "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" (2010), un film extraordinariamente divertido, basado en los cómics homónimos escritos y dibujados por Bryan Lee O’Malley. Preservando el sabor 'indy' de la publicación original a blanco y negro, esta adaptación fílmica es también un delicioso ejemplo de cine independiente. Michael Cera logra el mejor papel de su carrera como un inmaduro aspirante a músico, que también es un chico tierno y adorable que tiene considerables dificultades para conseguir citas. Con un maravilloso elenco juvenil (Mark Webber, Alison Pill, Johnny Simmons, Erik Knudsen, etc.), algunos de mis talentos jóvenes predilectos están aquí, como Kieran Culkin (su papel como el mejor amigo gay es entrañable e hilarante). El director Edgar Wright ha transformado a una muy querida novela gráfica en algo realmente divertido, original y único, e incluso ha aprovechado los cameos de actores conocidos como Chris Evans, Brandon Routh y Jason Schwartzman. 

Por otro lado, "The Normal Heart" (2014) es una dramática cronología de los primeros casos de SIDA en Estados Unidos y el trágico impacto que el VIH causó en la comunidad gay. El director Ryan Murphy ya me había deslumbrado con una obra maestra como “Running with Scissors” y con comedias juveniles de televisión tan encantadoras como vigentes, por ejemplo “Glee”. Esta vez, sin embargo, hurga en lo más profundo de una sociedad rota, de un mundo y una era (New York a inicios de los 80) que rechaza la homosexualidad y que considera el SIDA como un castigo divino, como un “cáncer gay” que purificaría el orbe heterosexual. Mark Ruffalo debería haber ganado tantos premios como fuese posible por su retrato fuerte y brutalmente honesto de un activista gay que se enamora de Matt Bomer, un exitoso columnista del New York Times. El film es realmente una canción de amor que nos ayuda a hallar tolerancia y comprensión en una situación devastadora que nadie sabía cómo manejar en los 80s. Muchos famosos actores y actrices, tanto heterosexuales como homosexuales, han colaborado en este proyecto especial: Julia Roberts, Alfred Molina, Finn Wittrock, Taylor Kitsch, etc. Valoro especialmente la colaboración de actores abiertamente gays como Jonathan Groff (famoso por su rol protagónico en la serie de temática gay de HBO "Looking", que por cierto me encanta) o Jim Parsons (famoso por su rol protagónico en "The Big Bang Theory"). Demoledora, intensa y absolutamente sincera, "The Normal Heart" es uno de los mejores films que he visto este año.

May comic books / cómics de mayo

It happens every year. My favorite FCBD book comes from Rebellion: it’s 2000AD. Am I losing impartiality? Is it because I grew up reading old 2000AD progs? I don’t know, the thing is that 2000AD FCBD 2014 was the best of the bunch. Epic (from Comix Tribe), however, was surprisingly good. May has also been a month for back issues, a chance to catch up on some of the All New Marvel Now series (the best has been Loki Agent of Asgard # 1, what an unforgettable first issue!). Certainly, Jason Aaron continues to surprise me with some of the best comics I've read lately: Thor God of Thunder and Wolverine & the X-Men. Both brilliant! Of  course, Miracleman continues to amaze me, and Mark Millar’s universe is still the best place to go. Starlight was terrific but if I had to choose my favorite comic book of the month the award would be a tie between MPH # 1 and 2000AD. A veritable British thrills overload! Pasa cada año. Mi cómic favorito del Día del Cómic Gratuito es de Rebellion: 2000AD. ¿Estoy perdiendo imparcialidad? ¿O es porque crecí leyendo viejas historias de 2000AD? No lo sé, lo cierto es que el FCBD de 2014 de 2000AD fue el mejor. Epic (de Comix Tribe), no obstante, fue sorprendentemente bueno. Mayo también fue un mes de números atrasados, una oportunidad para ponerme al día con algunas de las nuevas series de Marvel (lo mejor ha sido Loki Agent of Asgard # 1, ¡un primer número inolvidable!). Ciertamente Jason Aaron continúa sorprendiéndome con algunos de los mejores cómics que he leído últimamente: "Thor God of Thunder" y "Wolverine & the X-Men". ¡Ambos brillantes! Desde luego, Miracleman continúa asombrándome, y el universo de Mark Millar sigue siendo el mejor destino para nuestras visitas. Starlight fue estupendo pero si tuviera que elegir el mejor cómic del mes, el premio sería un empate entre MPH # 1 y 2000AD. Una verdadera sobrecarga de emoción inglesa.
