Happy new year! In addition to December films we also have the Best of 2015 List. So let’s start with Mr. Holmes (2015), directed by Bill Condon, which is definitely one of the best reinterpretations of Sherlock Holmes I’ve ever seen. Sir Ian McKellen (Apt Pupil) gives an outstanding performance as the world’s greatest detective (Laura Linney and Milo Parker are also amazing in their roles). Retired and old, Holmes must solve one last case. The filmmaker finds the appropriate balance between the cold logic and the intellectual side of the protagonist with deep human emotions; subtle and yet powerful, Mr. Holmes is an examination of the things we fear the most: getting older, losing our faculties and ending up alone, but at the same time it’s also a story about the inner struggle of a lonely genius and the possibility of befriending others. 

David Dobkin’s The Judge (2014) rests on the shoulders of two extraordinary actors: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Robert Duvall (Falling Down). An unexpected case reunites an ambitious lawyer with his estranged family. The father, a respected judge, is a defender of traditional values. An unresolved intergenerational conflict is also the dramatic starting point in this captivating story. Dobkin’s cinematographic approach feels very honest, reminding us why it’s important to heal old wounds. Intense and insightful, this is a must see. 

Kenneth Branagh’s new version of Cinderella (2015) has everything a bedtime story is supposed to have: magic, innocence and even a moral lesson. Branagh is faithful to the essence of the tale, but he also adds a little bit of flavor to it. The cast includes Lily James (Downton Abbey), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones). 

The talented Luc Besson creates a fascinating film about an American gangster living in a small French town as part of the FBI witness protection program. The Family (2013) is witty, violent and hilarious… a truly wonderful film. The barriers between what’s right and wrong, what’s legal and illegal, what’s socially accepted and what is rejected slowly fades away, as we get to meet the family members, and we immediately relate to them. The closer the director takes us into their lives, the more passionate we fell about them. The all-star cast includes Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Michelle Pfeiffer (Chéri), Dianna Agron (Glee), John D'Leo and Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men). 

Christopher Neil’s Goats (2012) is a deeply evocative and moving independent film. Graham Phillips is a teenager dealing with a very immature and eccentric mother (Vera Farmiga). Although at first his only fatherly figure is the underachiever and stoner David Duchovny (The X-Files), soon things start to change as the boy accepts the suggestion of his father and decides to study at Gates Academy. A bittersweet coming of age story, with a special sensibility and a lot of memorable scenes and crazy adventures. I really recommend it.

Garth Jennings writes and directs Son of Rambow (2007), a magnificent take on childhood imagination, friendship and cultural differences. Bill Milner (X-Men: First Class) and Will Poulter (We’re the Millers) become best friends, and embark upon a peculiar project: doing a movie that is both a parody and homage to Rambo. Jennings manages to capture the innocence and recklessness of the kids, highlighting at the same time their characteristics: the protagonist’s insecurity (due to his religious upbringing), his friend’s bravery and vulnerability, and even the sexually ambiguous demeanor of a new French student. Heartbreaking and cheerful in equal measures, Son of Rambow is an exciting journey through the dreams and fantasies of British boys. 

Based on Paul Auster’s short stories, Wayne Wang’s Smoke (1995) is a nostalgic and yet vivid collection of urban chronicles. New York is the scenario in which multiple characters learn how to cope with loss, how to find lost family members or how to face difficult challenges. The addiction to tobacco is the only element in common between all these curious and charming characters. I must say I really enjoyed Smoke, and the cast was splendid: Harvey Keitel (Pulp Fiction), William Hurt (The Yellow Handkerchief) and Stockard Channing.

Jonathan Lynn’s My Cousin Vinny (1992) is one of the funniest comedies from the 90s. College student Ralph Macchio and his friend are wrongfully accused of murder, and the only lawyer they can afford is the unexperienced Joe Pesci. Confusions, misinterpretations and silly mistakes are part of an arresting narrative in which a good sense of humor is always the key. I just couldn’t stop laughing in most of the scenes, it was that good. The cast also includes Marisa Tomei and Fred Gwynne (The Munsters).

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), directed by Chris Columbus, is an undisputed Christmas classic and one of the few all-ages movies I always enjoy (I never stop laughing whenever I see it again). Columbus brilliantly exemplifies how we can love and hate our relatives and how, despite all that, they’re the ones we need the most. Macaulay Culkin is a smart and charismatic child with enough resources to outsmart adults. In this Home Alone sequel, the boy’s antagonists are again Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. 

John Carpenter’s Christine (1983) is an adaptation of a Stephen King’s novel. Carpenter aptly portrays the anxieties and problems of adolescence while creating two complex characters: Keith Gordon, a sexually frustrated kid who is constantly bullied, and John Stockwell, his best friend and one of the most popular guys in high school. When Gordon buys an old car, he becomes obsessed with it, and he slowly turns into an arrogant and cruel individual; and the car turns out to be an evil, living entity (and quite jealous too).

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2013, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

¡Feliz año nuevo! Además de las películas de diciembre ahí va la lista de lo mejor del 2015. Así que empecemos con “Mr. Holmes” (2015), dirigida por Bill Condon, definitivamente una de las mejores reinterpretaciones de Sherlock Holmes que he visto. Sir Ian McKellen (Apt Pupil) destaca con su actuación como el mejor detective del mundo (Laura Linney y Milo Parker también están asombrosos en sus papeles). Jubilado y envejecido, Holmes debe resolver un último caso. El cineasta encuentra el equilibrio adecuado entre la fría lógica y el lado intelectual del protagonista con las emociones humanas más profundas; sutil y no obstante contundente, Mr. Holmes examina aquello que más tememos: envejecer, perder nuestras facultades y terminar solos, pero al mismo tiempo es también una historia sobre la lucha interna de un genio solitario y la posibilidad de amistad con los demás.

“The Judge” (2014), de David Dobkin, descansa sobre los hombros de dos extraordinarios actores: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) y Robert Duvall (Falling Down). Un caso inesperado reúne a un abogado ambicioso con su familia. El padre, un juez respetado, es un defensor de los valores tradicionales. Un conflicto intergeneracional no resuelto es también un dramático punto de partida para esta cautivante historia. El enfoque cinematográfico de Dobkin es muy honesto, y nos recuerda por qué es importante sanar viejas heridas. Intensa y profunda, vale la pena verla.

La nueva versión de Kenneth Branagh de “Cinderella” (2015) tiene todo lo que se supone que debe tener un cuento para niños: magia, inocencia e incluso una moraleja. Branagh es fiel a la esencia de la historia, pero también le da algunos toques especiales. Las barreras entre el bien y el mal, lo legal y lo ilegal, lo socialmente aceptado y lo rechazado lentamente se desvanecen, conforme conocemos a los miembros de la familia, de inmediato nos identificamos con ellos. Cuanto más nos acerca el director a sus vidas, más apasionante se vuelve todo. El reparto estelar incluye a Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Michelle Pfeiffer (Chéri), Dianna Agron (Glee), John D'Leo y Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men).

 “Goats” (2012), de Christopher Neil, es una película independiente profundamente evocadora y conmovedora. Graham Phillips es un adolescente que se enfrenta a una madre muy inmadura y excéntrica (Vera Farmiga). Aunque en un principio su única figura paterna es un fracasado David Duchovny (Los expedientes secretos X), pronto las cosas empiezan a cambiar a medida que el muchacho acepta la sugerencia de su padre y decide estudiar en la Academia Gates. Un agridulce relato sobre el paso de la adolescencia a la juventud, con una sensibilidad especial y un montón de escenas memorables y alocadas aventuras. La recomiendo.

Jennings logra capturar la inocencia y la imprudencia de los niños, resaltando al mismo tiempo sus características: la inseguridad del protagonista (a raíz de su educación religiosa), la valentía y la vulnerabilidad de su amigo, e incluso el comportamiento sexualmente ambiguo del nuevo estudiante francés. Desgarradora y alegre en partes iguales, Son of Rambow es un emocionante viaje a través de los sueños y fantasías de los chicos británicos.

Basado en los cuentos de Paul Auster, “Smoke” (1995), de Wayne Wang, es una colección nostálgica y animada de crónicas urbanas. “My Cousin Vinny” (1992), de Jonathan Lynn, es una de las comedias más divertidas de los 90s. El estudiante universitario Ralph Macchio y su amigo son injustamente acusados de asesinato, y el único abogado que pueden conseguir es el inexperto Joe Pesci. Confusiones, malinterpretaciones y errores tontos son parte de una amena narrativa en la que el buen sentido del humor es siempre la clave. No podía dejar de reírme en la mayoría de las escenas, fue así de buena. El reparto también incluye a Marisa Tomei y Fred Gwynne (“The Munsters”).

Columbus ejemplifica de modo brillante cómo podemos amar y odiar a nuestros familiares y cómo, a pesar de todo eso, siempre los necesitamos. Macaulay Culkin es un niño inteligente y carismático con suficientes recursos para ser más astuto que los adultos. En esta secuela de “Home Alone”, los antagonistas son nuevamente Joe Pesci y Daniel Stern.

“Christine” (1983), de John Carpenter, es una adaptación de una novela de Stephen King. Carpenter retrata acertadamente las inquietudes y problemas de la adolescencia, a la vez que crea dos personajes complejos: Keith Gordon, un muchacho frustrado sexualmente y que es humillado constantemente, y John Stockwell, su mejor amigo y uno de los chicos más populares de la secundaria. Cuando Gordon compra un coche viejo, se obsesiona y se convierte poco a poco en una persona arrogante y cruel; y el coche resulta ser una entidad maligna (y bastante celosa también).

El tiempo no es sino un delgado velo, sobre él nuestras siluetas se abultan o aligeran. Otro año va y viene en este atormentado blog y ello indudablemente merece que sopesemos apropiadamente nuestras experiencias cinematográficas. Que sea así, por ende, y dejadnos girar el torno y la rueda. Hablad, oh lectores, y escuchad bien, puesto que aún nos resta suficiente ingenio para sorprenderos. Se ha propuesto que debíamos encontrar posiciones para todas las imágenes en movimiento presentadas en el transcurso del 2012, y con mente ágil y conocimientos tanto en materia de directores como de actores, confiamos en que vosotros incluiréis nuestro juicio entre los mejores. Aqueste es nuestro testimonio... suficiente en nuestro pensamiento íntimo que estas apreciaciones, desparramadas al alimón, sean de la más noble disposición.

2015 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

When I was around 12 or 13, comics were more about escapism than anything else. I would plunge into the colorful adventures of American superheroes or into the thrilling odysseys of “2000 AD”. Back then, I think could have spent over 24 hours reading comics without so much as a pause to eat a Hershey’s chocolate or perhaps a Snickers.

Curiously, it took me a while to realize that the greatest magic of comics actually came from some truly talented individuals. And I became so fascinated with the writers and artists that, eventually, I ended up following the footsteps of my most idolized creators. I started writing and drawing my own comics, and I think that has allowed me to develop a unique perspective in regards to the creative process. Hopefully, my criticism is more of an informed opinion than a capricious appreciation. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the fifth annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Long before reading “Watchmen” or “V For Vendetta”, Alan Moore was already a literary idol for me. “Pog” or “Anatomy Lesson” were such brilliant stories that they changed my life. Even to this day I still remember how those Swamp Thing issues made me feel. It’s been decades since Moore left the DC Universe, but he continues to amaze us with such memorable works like “Crossed Plus One Hundred” and “Providence”. That’s why Moore is at the top of the best writer category. Of course, there are two other writers who deserve a round of applause: Neil Gaiman for his fantastic “Sandman Overture” and Mark Waid for his outstanding “Strange Fruit”. 

Art has always been part of our culture, and although sequential art is relatively new (comics have existed for a century or so) it has become even more relevant than other well-established artistic expressions. In 2015 there was a lot of extraordinary art that caught my attention, so it was particularly difficult to choose only 3 artists in this category: Gabriel Andrade surprised me with his spectacular illustrations for “Crossed Plus One Hundred”; J.G. Jones excels as a penciler, inker and a painter, and his work in “Strange Fruit” may very well be the best I’ve seen from him (which is saying a lot); Chris Burnham has produced some of the craziest and most violent images in “Nameless”, and all that effort deserves a proper recognition.  

A cover can make or break a book. It’s the first thing we see, and very often it’s the only thing we see (especially if we’re checking comic books solicitations almost 3 months advance). And with hundreds of comics published monthly, sometimes we only have time to look at the cover. So that’s why being a good cover artist is very important; in 2015, the best ones were J. H. Williams III for his symbolic approach in  “Sandman Overture”; Lee Bermejo, for his striking designs and sober colors palette in “Suciders”; and Dustin Nguyen for his remarkable efforts in “Descender”.

After Karen Berger left Vertigo, many readers were concerned about the fate of such respected imprint. Fortunately, editor Shelly Bond accepted the challenge of revitalizing Vertigo and I would say the result is rather satisfactory. And how could it be otherwise with titles like “Sandman Overture”, “Astro City”, “Suciders” and many others?

The best comics I’ve read in 2015 were written by Alan Moore. I’m talking about Miracleman (which was written in the 80s and reprinted recently by Marvel) and Crossed Plus One Hundred #5. The entire arc was splendid, but the fifth issue is my favorite. I could read it over and over again, and still be shocked by it. 

I still remember how much I loved “Astro City”, when I first read it years ago. It’s hard to believe that we’re now celebrating the 20th anniversary of Kurt Busiek’s critically acclaimed series. Busiek continues to write a mind-blowing saga, and that’s the kind of effort that should be rewarded. So “Astro City” is the best ongoing series of 2015. 

I had the opportunity to read many wonderful miniseries in the past 12 months, but there was only one that moved me in ways I could not have anticipated: combining the talents of 2 prominent creators (Mark Waid and J.G. Jones), “Strange Fruit” left me in awe from the very first page and that’s why I consider it is the best limited series of the year. 

It’s my personal policy to always try out as many new titles as possible. You never know what you might find, and sometimes you make some phenomenal discoveries. There have been many exciting new series this year: “Nameless”, “Suciders”, “Shaper”, “Descender”, “Jupiter’s Circle”, “All-Star Section 8”, “Airboy”, “Mercury Heat”, “We Stand on Guard”, “Phonogram: the Immaterial Girl”, “Tokyo Ghost” and “Midnighter”. However, “Providence” deserves all the accolades it can get. Moore’s series is of a haunting and complex nature, a true love song to Lovecraft, horror and the secret history of the United States.

Michael Zulli has always been one of my favorite artists, and when I decided to order “The Puma Blues” hardcover I had no idea I would receive such a beautiful edition. Dover Publications has produced a volume bigger than a Marvel or DC omnibus, and at a very affordable price. So it sure deserves a prize.

Some of my favorite comics this year came from the same publisher: “Crossed Plus One Hundred”, “Providence”, “Mercury Heat”, etc. For a long time now, the most famous British writers (Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Kieron Gillen, Warren Ellis, etc.) have produced some truly unforgettable works for Avatar Press, so I’ve decided to name it the best publisher of 2015.

In previous years I’ve expressed my appreciation towards websites like TheOuthousers.com and CBR, but this time I’ve decided to give the best comics-related webpage award to Comics.org, which I visit every week to find information about comics and authors. Probably the largest comic book database in the world, Comics.org is an excellent resource for fans and pros alike!

There is always bad news during the year, and sad ones too. In 2015, several comic book creators passed away, so it’s now our duty to honor their legacy. In the 80s, Roger Slifer was in charge of “Omega Men” and Primus, one of his characters, became a favorite of mine. I’ve been using the iconic Primus image from Omega Men #1 as my avatar since 2006 in plenty of comic book message boards and even here on my own blog. I hope to review “Omega Men” in 2017, because Slifer wrote some truly great stories in that series. I was very saddened when I found out he had died. Famous for his collaborations for “2000 AD”, Brett Ewins was a very gifted artist with a unique style, I had been a fan of his work ever since I started reading comics, he will be missed. John Cooper was also very popular thanks to his artistic contributions to “2000 AD”. I first saw Glen Orbik’s covers in the late 90s and I became a fan right away; he was an amazing illustrator. Herb Trimpe gained popularity as a Marvel artist during the 70s, especially in titles like The Hulk. Finally, Murphy Anderson was one of the biggest names during the Silver Age of comics at DC. I think the best way to pay homage to them is re-reading their works.

Sometimes I’m just baffled by the low quality in titles, especially those that come from the Big Two. It doesn’t matter how much I try to avoid bad comics, I always end up with a few lousy ones in my hands. The worst title of the year was Marvel’s Spider-Woman, which I consider a rather pointless book, with nothing interesting to add to the Spider-Man universe. The worst first issue I read was Shadow Vol. 2 # 1, it was really disappointing to see such an unimaginative approach. Finally, the most disappointing project was We Are Robin, it had some really bad drawings and although it had an interesting premise it was poorly developed.

Cuando tenía 12 o 13 años, los cómics eran una estupenda forma de escapismo. Me encantaba sumergirme en las coloridas aventuras de los superhéroes norteamericanos o en las emocionantes odiseas de “2000 AD”. En aquel entonces, creo que podría haber leído cómics durante 24 horas, deteniéndome apenas para comer un chocolate Hershey o tal vez un Snickers.

Curiosamente, me tomó un tiempo comprender que la verdadera magia de los cómics procedía realmente de algunos individuos verdaderamente talentosos. Y me sentí tan fascinado con los escritores y artistas que, con el tiempo, terminé siguiendo los pasos de mis creadores más idolatrados. Empecé a escribir y dibujar mis propios cómics, y creo que eso me ha permitido desarrollar una perspectiva única en lo que respecta al proceso creativo. Mi crítica es más una opinión informada que una apreciación caprichosa. Así que, sin más preámbulos, los invito a la quinta edición anual de los premios AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Mucho antes de leer “Watchmen” o “V de Vendetta”, Alan Moore ya era un ídolo literario para mí. “Pog” o “La lección de anatomía” fueron historias tan brillantes que cambiaron mi vida. Incluso hoy en día todavía recuerdo cómo me hicieron sentir esos ejemplares de “Swamp Thing”. Han pasado décadas desde que Moore dejó el Universo DC, pero nos sigue asombrando con obras tan memorables como “Crossed Plus One Hundred” y “Providence”. Es por eso que Moore está en el primer puesto en la categoría de mejor escritor. Por supuesto, hay otros dos escritores que merecen un fuerte aplauso: Neil Gaiman por su fantástico “Sandman Overture” y Mark Waid por su destacado “Strange Fruit”.

El arte siempre ha sido parte de nuestra cultura, y aunque el arte secuencial es relativamente nuevo (los cómics existen más o menos desde hace un siglo) ahora es incluso más relevante que otras expresiones artísticas tradicionales. En el 2015 hubo mucho arte de primer nivel, por lo tanto fue particularmente difícil elegir sólo a 3 artistas en esta categoría: Gabriel Andrade me sorprendió con sus espectaculares ilustraciones en “Crossed Plus One Hundred”; J.G. Jones destaca como dibujante a lápiz, entintador y colorista, y su trabajo en "Strange Fruit" quizá sea lo mejor que he visto de él (y eso ya es decir bastante); Chris Burnham ha producido algunas de las imágenes más demenciales y violentas en “Nameless”, y todo ese esfuerzo merece un reconocimiento adecuado.

Una portada hace (o deshace) al libro. Es lo primero que se ve, y muy a menudo es lo único que se ve (sobre todo si estamos revisando las solicitaciones de cómics con casi 3 meses de antelación). Y con cientos de cómics publicados mensualmente, a veces sólo tenemos tiempo para mirar la portada. Así que ser un buen portadista es de suma importancia; en el 2015, los mejores fueron J.H. Williams III por su enfoque simbólico en “Sandman Overture”; Lee Bermejo, por sus diseños llamativos y su sobria paleta de colores en “Suciders”; y Dustin Nguyen por sus notables esfuerzos en “Descender”.

Cuando Karen Berger dejó Vertigo, muchos lectores se mostraron preocupados por el destino de tan respetado sello editorial. Afortunadamente, la editora Shelly Bond aceptó el reto de revitalizar Vertigo y yo diría que el resultado es bastante satisfactorio. Y vaya que es así gracias a títulos como “Sandman Overture”, “Astro City”, “Suciders” y muchos otros.

Los mejores cómics que he leído el 2015 fueron escritos por Alan Moore. Estoy hablando de Miracleman (que fue escrito en los 80s y reeditado recientemente por Marvel) y Crossed Plus One Hundred #5. Toda la serie fue espléndida, pero el quinto número es mi favorito. Podría leerlo una y otra vez, y seguiría sorprendiéndome.

Todavía recuerdo lo mucho que me encantó “Astro City”, cuando lo leí por primera vez hace años. Es difícil creer que ahora estamos celebrando el vigésimo aniversario de la aclamada serie de Kurt Busiek, quien continúa escribiendo una saga alucinante. Ese es el tipo de esfuerzo que debe ser recompensado. Así que “Astro City” es la mejor serie mensual del 2015.

Tuve la oportunidad de leer muchas miniseries maravillosas en los últimos 12 meses, pero sólo hubo una que me impactó de una manera que no podría haber anticipado: al combinar los talentos de 2 destacados creadores (Mark Waid y J.G. Jones), “Strange Fruit” me dejó asombrado desde la primera página y es por eso que considero que es la mejor serie limitada del año.

Es mi política personal darle el beneficio de la duda al mayor número posible de nuevos títulos. Nunca se sabe lo que uno puede encontrar, y en ocasiones uno puede hacer algunos descubrimientos fenomenales. Este año hubo muchas emocionantes series nuevas: “Nameless”, “Suciders”, “Shaper”, “Descender”, “Jupiter’s Circle”, “All-Star Section 8”, “Airboy”, “Mercury Heat”, “We Stand on Guard”, “Phonogram: the Immaterial Girl”, “Tokyo Ghost” y “Midnighter”. Sin embargo, “Providence” merece todos los elogios posibles. La serie de Moore es de una naturaleza inquietante y compleja, es un verdadero homenaje a Lovecraft, el horror y la historia secreta de los Estados Unidos.

Siempre hay malas y tristes noticias durante el año. En el 2015, varios creadores de cómics fallecieron, por lo tanto ahora es nuestro deber honrar su legado. En los 80s, Roger Slifer estaba a cargo de “Omega Men” y Primus, uno de sus personajes, se convirtió en mi favorito. He estado usando la imagen icónica de Primus de Omega Men # 1 como mi avatar desde el 2006 en un montón de páginas y foros de cómics e incluso aquí en mi propio blog. Espero reseñar “Omega Men” en el 2017, Slifer escribió algunas historias realmente grandiosas en dicha serie. Su fallecimiento me causó tristeza. Famoso por sus colaboraciones para “2000 AD”, Brett Ewins fue un artista muy talentoso con un estilo único, he sido fan de su trabajo desde que empecé a leer cómics, todos extrañarán su arte. John Cooper también fue muy popular gracias a sus contribuciones artísticas para “2000 AD”. Vi por primera vez las portadas de Glen Orbik a fines de los 90s y me volví un fan de inmediato; él era un ilustrador increíble. Herb Trimpe ganó popularidad como artista en Marvel durante los 70s, sobre todo en títulos como Hulk. Por último, Murphy Anderson fue uno de los nombres más importantes durante la Edad de Plata de los cómics en DC. Creo que la mejor manera de rendirles homenaje es releyendo sus obras.

A veces me sorprende la baja calidad de ciertos títulos, sobre todo los que provienen de Marvel y DC. No importa lo mucho que trato de evitar leer malos cómics, siempre termino con algunos en mis manos. El peor título del año fue Spider-Woman, que parecía no tener rumbo alguno, y sin nada interesante que añadir al universo de Spider-Man. El peor primer número fue Shadow Vol. 2 # 1, fue realmente decepcionante ver este enfoque poco imaginativo. Por último, el proyecto más decepcionante fue We Are Robin, tenía muy malos dibujos y aunque la premisa parecía interesante fue mal desarrollada.

Por Odín, he de cruzar multitud de ciudades para hallar esta audiencia. Y el alba se iluminaría prestamente si acaso dejase mi muesca en este diario en línea. Os propongo que encontréis opiniones, de guisa que complementéis las mías o las contradigáis. Os preguntaré, y sabré la verdad raudamente. Lo mejor del arte en Lima - 2015

2015 has been a very gratifying year for me. It started a little bit slow, and perhaps with more bad news than good ones. Sometimes it’s hard to deal with certain situations, and I must say the beginning of this year caught me completely off guard. Fortunately, I somehow managed to find the energy to start new projects. 

In April 2015 I started putting together a new comic book with stories either written or drawn by me. I wanted to make sure the comic would be on ComiXology so I had to meet a tight deadline. 

In November, Dawn of the Undead was already available for sale on ComiXology while I was proudly holding in my hands a printed version of the book. 

So, just like I predicted in December 2014, this was a much better year for me. In fact, December was a particularly rewarding month. I finally completed my thesis and my dissertation went very well. 

And if that isn’t reason enough to celebrate, I also won an important comic book award in an annual event organized by my own university. 

Since I started this blog I have always showcased my own artwork but I have also analyzed the artistic proposals of Peruvian artists. 

It gives me great pleasure to find such fascinating works this year so I’ve decided to make a selection of the best of 2015.

As usual, this selection includes mostly Peruvian artists, however, in the international section you’ll find American photographer David LaChapelle. Unlike previous years, this time I’m not including anything from MATE (Mario Testino Foundation), although I did go there a few weeks ago and I was once again very impressed with its photography collection.

In my next post you’ll discover the finest authors and best comic books of 2015. Yes, it’s the fifth edition of the famous and prestigious AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards). It’s always a lot of fun to do this list, and I hope it will inspire all of you to do similar lists (of course, you’re more than welcome to post them in the comments section).

El 2015 ha sido un año muy interesante. Aunque los primeros meses fueron, más bien, poco memorables, en abril empecé a preparar un nuevo proyecto. Hice una selección de mis mejores historias cortas (escritas y/o dibujadas por mí) y las reuní en un mismo cómic; la mayoría había sido publicada previamente a blanco y negro y muchas tenían un rotulado bastante simplón, por lo tanto, en esta ocasión fue necesario pedirle a ayuda a un gran número de colaboradores (dibujantes a lápiz, entintadores, coloristas y rotulistas).

Reve

Desde un principio mi meta era que el cómic estuviese a la venta en ComiXology, así que sabía que tenía que tener todo listo antes de julio (como había comprobado el año pasado, la subsidiaria de Amazon puede tardar hasta 5 meses para aprobar los cómics de autores independientes). Por suerte, fue posible cumplir con el plazo de entrega y en noviembre el cómic Dawn of the Undead salió a la venta en ComiXology. Casi en la misma fecha, también salió la versión impresa del cómic.

Finalmente, diciembre fue un mes muy gratificante. Terminé de escribir mi tesis de licenciatura, y mi sustentación fue todo un éxito. Al mismo tiempo, gané el primer puesto en el concurso de historietas organizado por la facultad de comunicaciones de la PUCP. El premio, sin duda, fue una enorme alegría, sobre todo porque en años anteriores había participado en el concurso (el 2008 y el 2009) sin haber obtenido ningún reconocimiento, y luego de una mención honrosa (el 2010) había dejado de enviar trabajos. Por suerte, en esta ocasión decidí hacer un último intento y el resultado fue totalmente favorable. 

Como siempre, este año mi interés por el arte me llevó a innumerables muestras y creo que es justo, y hasta necesario, establecer en líneas generales un balance de lo mejor del arte en Lima.

Hace más de 5 años conocí a Renzo Núñez Melgar Vega (alias REVE), y cuando vi sus cuadros por primera vez comprendí que se trataba de un artista extraordinario. Con disciplina y mucho tesón, Renzo ha mantenido firme su rumbo en el siempre veleidoso mundo del arte. En el Centro Colich, el gran artista nos sorprendió con “La publicidad que no conocías”, muestra que unía a las estrellas del rock de los 60s y 70s con los productos nacionales de consumo masivo, en una lúcida amalgama visual que destacaba por su insuperable técnica pictórica.

¡por fin gané!

La mejor muestra individual del 2015 es “Catedral” de José Luis Carranza. La Galería Enlace nuevamente ha tenido el acierto de darle protagonismo a uno de los mejores artistas de nuestro país. Carranza regresa con energías renovadas, fiel al estilo que lo caracteriza y haciendo un gran despliegue de creatividad; su impresionante imaginación ha cautivado ya a infinidad de espectadores.  

Llegué a ver bastantes muestras colectivas a lo largo del año, pero ninguna me pareció tan armoniosa en su propuesta como “Modern Love”. Dédalo una vez más ha marcado la pauta, con una colectiva de artistas (Sheila Alvarado, Andrea Barreda y Yulia Katkova) que abordan el amor desde una perspectiva fresca y novedosa. Espero ver más trabajos de ellas en el 2016.

Además de nombrar a artistas ya establecidos, siempre es bueno dar una mirada a aquellos que recién están comenzando. En mi opinión, el mejor artista joven del 2015 es José Gabriel Alegría Sabogal, quien impresionó al público con su muestra “Hipnógrafos” en el Centro Colich. Por esas curiosas coincidencias, me encontré con José Gabriel el día de la ceremonia de premiación del concurso de historieta de la PUCP. 

Desde hace varios años, Iván Fernández-Dávila ha perfeccionado su estilo y ha ido alcanzando, cada vez con mayor rigurosidad, una estética propia y sumamente personal. Este año, Iván nos deleitó con “Expresionismos”, individual presentada en el Museo Pedro de Osma. Los cuadros de la muestra hablan por sí solos, a la vez que establecen una línea conductora que nos remite a exposiciones previas. Por eso, considero que es la mejor propuesta artística del año.

He sido fan de Juan Acevedo desde que era niño. Sus cómics siempre han tenido un encanto especial y no en vano se le reconoce como el principal exponente del noveno arte en nuestro país. Al fin, el ICPNA reconoció su importante labor creativa con una espectacular retrospectiva, que reunía más de 400 originales del artista limeño. 

Este año el MAC se lució con la magnífica exposición de David LaChapelle “Fotografías 1984-2013”. Las salas del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Barranco cobraron vida con las alucinantes imágenes de LaChapelle. Fue un verdadero lujo observar de cerca la obra de uno de los mejores fotógrafos contemporáneos a nivel mundial. Esta ha sido, de lejos, la mejor muestra de arte internacional.

November comics / cómics de noviembre

November sure brought plenty of good surprises. Airboy comes to its irreverent conclusion (I really enjoyed it), and there were some truly interesting first issues, such as Millar’s Huck and Aaron’s Doctor Strange (in fact, the first two chapters in this new saga of the Sorcerer Supreme were a lot of fun). The Puma Blues HC is a gorgeous edition (Zulli is such an amazing artist and this is the kind of book I’ll treasure forever). The best comic of the month is The Goddamned #1 by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guéra (intense story and wonderful art: a must read!). So now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:  

AIRBOY #4 (of 4) (MR)

Hubo muchas buenas sorpresas en noviembre. “Airboy” llega a su irreverente conclusión (realmente la disfruté), y hubo algunos primeros números realmente interesantes, como “Huck” de Millar y “Doctor Strange” de Aaron (de hecho, los primeros dos capítulos de esta nueva saga del Hechicero Supremo fueron muy divertidos). El tomo en tapa dura de “The Puma Blues” HC es una edición preciosa (Zulli es un artista tan asombroso y este el tipo de libro que atesoraré para siempre). El mejor cómic del mes es “The Goddamned” #1 de Jason Aaron y R.M. Guéra (argumento intenso y arte maravilloso: ¡imprescindible!). Así que sin mayores preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de noviembre:
