Arion's Archaic Art: 2026

Happy New Year! Let's celebrate the beginning of 2026 combining December films with the Best of 2025 List. Directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme (2025) is an unstoppable adventure that made me feel fascinated by ping pong. Timothée Chalamet (Dune) is a young man obsessed with becoming the world champion of table tennis in the 50s, his whole identity revolves around this ambitious goal, and as he tries his best to leave behind a life of poverty and mediocrity, as well as his first love interest, Odessa A'zion, and Fran Drescher, his mother. He must make sacrifices in order to participate in the world championship in London. During a hectic and chaotic journey he’ll meet Gwyneth Paltrow (The Talented Mr. Ripley), who will soon become his lover. I have no intentions of summarizing the film, suffice to say that there is so much action, frenetic struggle, incredible energy and moments of pure and raw conflict that will touch the viewers. The cast includes Fred Hechinger (Thelma) and even David Mamet! With top notch performances, a captivating script and especially a truly remarkable performance by Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme is definitely one of the best releases of 2025.

Peter Cattaneo’s The Pinguin Lessons (2024) is a delightful and wonderful story about the unlikely transformation of Steve Coogan, a British teacher who has lost all his motivation and is now stranded in Argentina in the 70s, during the military dictatorship, reluctantly working in a private British boarding school under the direction of headmaster Jonathan Pryce. When the protagonist rescues a penguin, the animal will become his loyal companion, and through this pure bond of loyalty and friendship, the man will start embracing life and rediscovering his passion for teaching. However, under a military dictatorship many problems will arise, and the idea of solidarity will be explored not only by the protagonist but also by all those around him. A wonderful, beautiful film that will inspire you and move you like no others.

The Friend (2024), directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, it’s an interesting take on multigenerational friendship and the bonds between two people who were friends and also, albeit briefly lovers. Bill Murray (Ghostbusters), a famous and respected writer, was a mentor to Naomi Watts (3 Generations), who is also a writer; however, when the man decides to commit suicide, shocking everyone, he also decides to bequeath her his most cherished possession, a dog, a Great Dane. Suddenly, Naomi Watts’ entire life is turned upside down due to the presence of this huge dog. Although she hates this imposition at first, she soon warms up to the animal, who happens to be a reminder of a lost friendship. Although The Friend has many insightful moments, I think it’s insufficient when it tries to encompass the notion of loss and death.

Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry (2023) is quite an entertaining biopic that revolves around the founders of the first smartphone in history, the BlackBerry. We get to meet Mike Lazaridis, the inventor, and Jim Balsillie, the aggressive businessman, played by Jay Baruchel (Just Buried) and Glenn Howerton respectively, and we get to see the humble origins of a small company that eventually became a giant. However, as it frequently happens, BlackBerry underestimated its competition, and when Apple announced the iPhone, everything started going downhill. From owning half of the phone market at its peak to disappearing completely, BlackBerry perfectly summarizes what happens when extreme ambition collides with undiluted arrogance.

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2023, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

Dirigida por Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme (2025) es una aventura sin pausa que me obligó a interesarme por el ping pong. Timothée Chalamet (Dune) es un joven obsesionado con convertirse en el campeón mundial de tenis de mesa en los 50s. Toda su identidad gira en torno a este ambicioso objetivo, y mientras se esfuerza por dejar atrás una vida de pobreza y mediocridad, así como a su primer interés amoroso, Odessa A'zion, y a Fran Drescher, su madre, deberá hacer sacrificios para participar en el campeonato mundial de Londres. Durante un viaje frenético y caótico, conocerá a Gwyneth Paltrow (The Talented Mr. Ripley), quien pronto se convertirá en su amante. No pretendo resumir la película; basta con decir que hay muchísima acción, lucha frenética, energía increíble y momentos de conflicto puro y crudo que conmoverán a los espectadores. El reparto incluye a Fred Hechinger (Thelma) ¡e incluso a David Mamet! Con actuaciones de primera, un guión cautivador y, sobre todo, una interpretación realmente notable de parte de Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme es sin duda uno de los mejores estrenos del 2025.

The Pinguin Lessons (2024), de Peter Cattaneo, es una historia encantadora y maravillosa sobre la improbable transformación de Steve Coogan, un maestro británico que ha perdido toda motivación y se encuentra varado en Argentina en los 70s, durante la dictadura militar, trabajando a regañadientes en un internado privado británico bajo la dirección del director Jonathan Pryce. Cuando el protagonista rescata a un pingüino, el animal se convierte en su fiel compañero, y a través de este vínculo puro de lealtad y amistad, el hombre comienza a abrazar la vida y a redescubrir su pasión por la enseñanza. Sin embargo, bajo una dictadura militar, surgen muchos problemas, y la idea de la solidaridad será explorada no sólo por el protagonista, sino también por todos los que lo rodean. Una película maravillosa y hermosa que te inspirará y conmoverá como ninguna otra.

The Friend (2024), dirigida por Scott McGehee y David Siegel, es una perspectiva interesante sobre la amistad multigeneracional y los vínculos entre dos personas que fueron amigos y también, aunque brevemente, amantes. Bill Murray (Ghostbusters), un escritor famoso y respetado, fue mentor de Naomi Watts (3 Generations), quien también es escritora; sin embargo, cuando el hombre decide suicidarse, impactando a todos, también decide legarle su posesión más preciada: un perro, un gran danés. De repente, la vida de Naomi Watts da un vuelco debido a la presencia de este enorme perro. Aunque al principio detesta esta imposición, pronto se encariña con el animal, quien resulta ser un recordatorio de una amistad perdida. Si bien The Friend tiene muchos momentos reveladores, creo que es insuficiente cuando intenta abarcar la noción de pérdida y muerte.

BlackBerry (2023), de Matt Johnson, es una película biográfica bastante entretenida que gira en torno a los fundadores del primer teléfono inteligente de la historia, el BlackBerry. Conocemos a Mike Lazaridis, el inventor, y a Jim Balsillie, el agresivo empresario, interpretados por Jay Baruchel (Just Buried) y Glenn Howerton respectivamente, y vemos los humildes orígenes de una pequeña empresa que con el tiempo se convirtió en un gigante. Sin embargo, como suele ocurrir, BlackBerry subestimó a su competencia, y cuando Apple anunció el iPhone, todo empezó a ir cuesta abajo. De poseer la mitad del mercado de teléfonos en su apogeo a desaparecer por completo, BlackBerry resume a la perfección lo que sucede cuando la ambición extrema choca con la arrogancia descarada.

El tiempo no es sino un delgado velo, sobre él nuestras siluetas se abultan o aligeran. Otro año va y viene en este atormentado blog y ello indudablemente merece que sopesemos apropiadamente nuestras experiencias cinematográficas. Que sea así, por ende, y dejadnos girar el torno y la rueda. Hablad, oh lectores, y escuchad bien, puesto que aún nos resta suficiente ingenio para sorprenderos. Se ha propuesto que debíamos encontrar posiciones para todas las imágenes en movimiento presentadas en el transcurso del 2023, y con mente ágil y conocimientos tanto en materia de directores como de actores, confiamos en que vosotros incluiréis nuestro juicio entre los mejores. Aqueste es nuestro testimonio... suficiente en nuestro pensamiento íntimo que estas apreciaciones, desparramadas al alimón, sean de la más noble disposición.
