I’ve been there. I know how it feels to quit. Perhaps we all do, perhaps we’ve all been quitters at one time or another –in school, in our jobs, with our loved ones– so we can relate to Shinji Ikari. I know I can. Very much so. You see, I’m not sure who will win in a quitting competition, if Shinji or me. To quit instead of persevere has always been one my greatest defects, and even today sometimes I still feel the temptation of simply giving up. Just like Shinji. 

This seventh volume includes stages 41 through 48: “Fist”, “Ashen Skies”, “Cross-Examination”, “Atonement”, “A Man’s Battle”, “The Awakening, part 1”, “The Awakening, part 2” and “Eradication”. Everything starts with anger. Shinji is angry, more than that, he’s furious. He hates NERV’s Commander for giving the order that resulted in the demise of his best friend, Toji Suzuhara. Therefore he decides, once again, to tender his resignation to NERV.

This friendship is one of Shinji’s most treasured memories. Shinji had been living an existence of isolation; as if he were encapsulated in a transparent sphere that allowed him to observe the world but prevented him from interacting with it. Such a claustrophobic feeling, I should know… my childhood and the onset of my adolescence was also that: staying in a dark room, looking at the world outside my window, and never daring to go out and live in it. “And the window I thought I had shut tight –it started to open”, admits Shinji. And it was all thanks to Toji, and before he knew it, the boy that had meant so much to him was gone.

The secret past of Kaji / El pasado secreto de Kaji 

When a new angel, Zeruel, attacks Tokyo 3, NERV has only two Eva pilots available: Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu. Before leaving the city, Shinji is intercepted by Ryoji Kaji who leads him to an underground shelter. There, Kaji talks about his past. In the days after the second impact, Japan was a devastated nation, destroyed and desolated, and hundreds of thousands of orphans prowled the urban ruins. Kaji was one of them, with his brother and ragtag group of street urchins, he spent most of his time stealing food from government shelters and military facilities. Until one day he was captured. Tortured by the soldiers, the boy confesses where his gang of friends is hiding, knowing that the penalty for them is death, even if they are underage. 

For Kaji, things are clear. He managed to survive although that cost him the lives of his brother and his closest friends. Ever since then he has never trusted in soldiers or figures of authority; and he has made an effort to destabilize those in power, and that’s the reason why he’s now a spy uncovering NERV’s secrets.  Not even his love for Misato Katsuragi was enough to grant him peace. He’s still haunted by the ghosts of the murdered children. “Neither of us deserve to be happy”, explains Kaji. He’s got blood on his hands, and so does Misato. And even Shinji is, in some way, responsible for the death of his friend. “Suzuhara died… and you survived”.

Although in the anime, Kaji’s motivation always remained unclear, here we discover the character’s past, his traumas, his fears, and we understand why, despise his initial reticence, Shinji chooses to return to NERV’s HQ. Zeruel has already dismembered and decapitated Unit-02 and neutralized Unit-00. After destroying the geo-front’s barriers and defenses, and exposing Central Dogma, everyone fears for the worst. And that’s when Shinji appears in Unit-01, and attacks the powerful angel, losing an arm in the process and suffering severe damages.   

Out of power and reserve batteries, the Evangelion is defenseless against Zeruel. Until something deep within Unit-01 awakens; and thus the beast inside the technological armor is unleashed. After a brutal combat, the angel is annihilated and devoured by the Evangelion. 

For the first time, the angelic nature of the threat is hard to distinguish from the inhuman nature of the Evangelion. Ultimately, humans and angels may have more in common than what we originally had envisioned. If human beings are the heirs of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (self-consciousness), then surely angels are the heirs of the Tree of Life (immortality). As it’s made clear at the beginning of the series, both “factions” try to analyze and decipher the other. Both fail at it, and war “the ultimate failure of communication” becomes the only alternative. 

Finally, the leaders of Seele –a secret organization– are discussing the future of NERV. They consider it’s time to leave everything in the hands of their most valuable asset: Tabris. This 14-year-old boy, also known as Kaworu Nagisa, will cause a tremendous impact in Shinji’s life.

“Suzuhara died… and you survived” /
“Suzuhara murió... y tú sobreviviste”

He estado ahí. Sé cómo se siente renunciar. Tal vez todos lo sabemos, tal vez todos hemos renunciado en uno u otro momento -en el colegio, en nuestros trabajos, con nuestras parejas- así que nos podemos identificar con Shinji Ikari. Sé que me identifico con él. Muchísimo. Verán, no estoy seguro quién ganaría en una competencia de renuncias, si Shinji o yo. Rendirse en vez de perseverar siempre ha sido uno de mis más grandes defectos, e incluso hoy en día a veces siento la tentación de rendirme. Igualito que Shinji.

Este séptimo volumen incluye las etapas 41 a 48: "Puño", "Cielos de ceniza", "Examinación doble", "Expiación", "Una batalla de hombre", "El despertar parte 1", "El despertar parte 2" y "Erradicación". Todo empieza con ira. Shinji está molesto, más que eso, está furioso. Odia al comandante de NERV por haber dado la orden que provocó el deceso de su mejor amigo, Toji Suzuhara. Por lo tanto, decide una vez más presentar su renuncia a NERV.

Esta amistad es uno de los recuerdos más preciados de Ikari. Shinji ha estado viviendo una existencia de aislamiento; como si estuviera encapsulado en una esfera transparente que le permitiese observar el mundo pero le impidiese interactuar con él. Es un sentimiento muy claustrofóbico, lo sé muy bien... mi infancia y el inicio de mi adolescencia también fueron así: estar en un cuarto oscuro, mirando al mundo fuera de mi ventana, y no atreverme nunca a salir y a vivir en él. "Y la ventana que pensé que había cerrado del todo -empezó a abrirse", admite Shinji. Y todo fue gracias a Toji, y antes de darse cuenta, el chico que había significado tanto para él ya no estaba allí.

Shinji versus Zeruel

Cuando un nuevo ángel, Zeruel, ataca Tokio 3, NERV sólo tiene dos pilotos disponibles: Rei Ayanami y Asuka Langley Soryu. Antes de dejar la ciudad, Shinji es interceptado por Ryoji Kaji quien lo lleva a un refugio subterráneo. Allí Kaji habla sobre su pasado. En los días posteriores al segundo impacto, Japón era una nación devastada, destrozada y desolada, y cientos de miles de huérfanos acechaban las ruinas urbanas. Kaji era uno de ellos, con su hermano y una pandilla de jóvenes delincuentes, pasaba la mayor parte del tiempo robando comida de los refugios del gobierno y las bases militares. Hasta que un día fue capturado. Torturado por los soldados, el chico confiesa dónde se esconde su grupo de amigos, sabiendo que la penalidad para ellos es la muerte, incluso si son menores de edad.

Para Kaji, el asunto es claro. Él se las arregló para sobrevivir aunque eso le costara las vidas de su hermano y sus amigos más cercanos. Desde entonces jamás ha confiado en soldados ni en figuras de autoridad; y ha hecho un esfuerzo para desestabilizar a aquellos en el poder, y esa es la razón por la que es un espía que destapa los secretos de NERV. Ni siquiera su amor por Misato Katsuragi fue suficiente para otorgarle paz. Todavía es acosado por los fantasmas de los niños asesinados. "Ninguno de nosotros merece ser feliz", explica Kaji. Tiene sangre en sus manos, al igual que Misato. E incluso Shinji, en cierto modo, es responsable por la muerte de su amigo. “Suzuhara murió... y tú sobreviviste”.

Aunque en el anime, la motivación de Kaji siempre fue insondable, aquí descubrimos el pasado del personaje, sus traumas, sus miedos, y entendemos por qué, a pesar de su reticencia inicial, Shinji opta por regresar al cuartel general de NERV. Zeruel ya ha desmembrado y decapitado a la Unidad-02 y neutralizado a la Unidad-00. Después de destruir las barreras y defensas del geo-frente, y dejar el Dogma Central expuesto, todos temen lo peor. Y allí es cuando Shinji aparece en la Unidad-01, y ataca al poderoso ángel, perdiendo un brazo en el proceso y sufriendo serios daños.

Sin energía y sin baterías de reserva, el Evangelion no tiene defensas frente a Zeruel. Hasta que en las profundidades de la Unidad-01 algo se despierta; y de este modo la bestia dentro de la armadura tecnológica es desatada. Después de un brutal combate, el ángel es aniquilado y devorado por el Evangelion. 

Por primera vez, la naturaleza angélica de la amenaza es difícil de distinguir de la naturaleza inhumana del Evangelion. En última instancia, los humanos y los ángeles pueden tener más en común de lo que habíamos considerado originalmente. Si los seres humanos son los herederos del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal (la auto-conciencia), entonces seguramente los ángeles son los herederos del árbol de la vida (la inmortalidad). Al inicio de la serie es evidente que ambas "facciones" intentan analizar y descifrar al otro. Ambas fracasan y la guerra "el fracaso definitivo de la comunicación" se convierte en la única alternativa.

Finalmente, los líderes de Seele –una organizacion secreta– están discutiendo el futuro de NERV. Ellos consideran que es hora de dejar todo en manos de su recurso más valioso: Tabris. Este chico de 14 años, también conocido como Kaworu Nagisa, causará un impacto tremendo en la vida de Shinji.

The 4th Child / El cuarto niño

Much in the same way that we remember our childhood, however happy or sad it might have been, we always remember our friends. Growing up is like walking amidst a strange region, a land of confusion if you will. Sometimes, those friends are the only light in a place surrounded by darkness. Shinji Ikari understands that, and I guess I also understood it when I was in high school. But there is something else that happened to Shinji –that happened to me– that places us slightly apart from others. We were so shy, so hermetic, so imprisoned within ourselves that a friend, any friend, would be cherished as the most valuable gift ever. 

When Toji Suzuhara first met Shinji, he punched him in the face, accusing him for not saving his sister in the struggle with the angel Sachiel. As time goes on, Toji and Shinji become good friends. In fact, it is those scarce moments of happiness with Toji and Kensuke –with true friends– that give meaning to Shinji’s life, a life that had become an imposition, a tedious martyrdom. If it’s true that we stay alive for each other, that we survive not in spite but thanks to those who are closest to us, then what happens once they’re gone?

The sixth volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion (comprising stages 34 through 40: “The Fourth Child”, “Light, Then Shadow”, “Confession”, “The Gift”, “Ambush”, “The Dummy System” and “Staining the Twilight Black”) is a very intense emotional journey that doesn’t end well for the protagonists. First, Asuka attempts to undress herself in front of Kaji, and tells him that she is in love with him. Kaji simply rejects the advances of the underage girl, leaving her awfully frustrated. 

At the same time, Toji is secretly selected as the fourth child: the fourth Eva pilot. One day, he asks Shinji to spend the afternoon together. The boy accepts and they eat sushi, and talk and have fun, but Toji is uneasy, he wants to make a confession. He looks at Shinji with the same fear and anxiousness that I –or perhaps you– might have experienced before telling a big secret to my best friend, the kind of confidence that must be whispered only in the most private of moments. Eventually, Toji is courageous enough to tell Shinji that he has been chosen by NERV. Except that he doesn’t have much of a choice, NERV has extorted him: promising to administer the best treatments to his comatose sister, they have effectively forced him to take on a duty that no 14-year-old should ever accept. And he’s so scared. Toji has evolved a lot, from a seemingly hostile bully in the first volume to a teenager with complex feelings and a unique voice. It is in this moment of fear that he is presented to us in his entire human dimension. He’s just as afraid as Shinji was / is. 

Shinji does his very best trying to comfort his friend, telling him that there is nothing to worry about. Toji apologizes for hitting Shinji the day they met. “I didn’t know”, he says, but how could he? How could anyone know or even imagine what it means to drive Earth’s most lethal machinery of destruction? Soon, Toji departs to his first trial with Eva Unit-03, built by the Americans. Nevertheless, an unknown entity contaminates the EVA and takes possession of it while Suzuhara is inside.

In the ensuing battle, Eva Unit-00 and Eva Unit-02 are overpowered. Only Shinji has the opportunity to counterattack. Except he can’t. He won’t. If he hits Unit-03 he risks injuring Toji, and that’s a risk he is not willing to take. Even as the arms of this black Evangelion are about to break his neck, Shinji refuses to defend himself. That’s when commander Gendo Ikari severs the link between Shinji and his Evangelion, and activates the “dummy system”, an artificial intelligence that takes control of the Eva. Shinji then observes powerless how Unit-01 rips off the arms of its opponent, how it crashes its skull and splatters tons of organic matter into the nearby buildings and how, in the end, breaks Toji as if he were a useless mannequin.

The depravity of Shinji’s father had already been made evident –by forcing Toji to be the guinea pig for Unit-03– but the level of cruelty that he displays here is even more refined: he makes Shinji watch all of it. It’s rare to feel sad when something like this happens to a fictitious character, but in this case I think it’s comprehensible. I was shocked to see how the NERV agents retrieve the ruined body of a 14-year-old boy who was Shinji’s friend, and in a weird way, crossing the boundaries of reality and fiction, a good friend of mine too. I remember how I felt when I first saw this anime episode, but for some unknown reason, reliving it now, reading this volume, has made me experience an even stronger emotional impact.

best friends forever / mejores amigos para siempre

Del mismo modo que recordamos nuestra infancia, así haya sido feliz o triste, siempre recordamos a nuestros amigos. Crecer es como caminar por una extraña región, una tierra de confusión. A veces, esos amigos son la única luz en un lugar sumido en la oscuridad. Así lo entiende Shinji Ikari, y supongo que así es como yo lo entendía en secundaria. Pero hay algo más que le pasó a Shinji –que me pasó a mí– que nos aparta un poco de los demás. Éramos tan tímidos, tan herméticos, tan prisioneros de nosotros mismos que un amigo, cualquier amigo, era valorado como el regalo más valioso.

Cuando Toji Suzuhara conoció a Shinji, le dio un puñetazo en la cara, acusándolo de no haber salvado a su hermana en la batalla con el ángel Sachiel. Pero con el tiempo Toji y Shinji se vuelven muy amigos. De hecho, son esos escasos momentos de felicidad con Toji y Kensuke -con amigos de verdad- los que dan significado a la vida de Shinji, una vida que se había convertido en una imposición, un tedioso martirio. Si es cierto que seguimos vivos por el otro, que sobrevivimos no a pesar sino gracias a aquellos que nos son más cercanos, ¿qué sucede, entonces, cuando nos dejan?

El sexto volumen de Neon Genesis Evangelion (que reúne las etapas 34 a 40: "El cuarto niño", "Luz, luego sombra", "Confesión", "El regalo", "Emboscada", "El sistema provisional" y "Manchando el negro crepúsculo") es un intenso viaje emocional que no termina bien para los protagonistas. Primero, Asuka intenta desvestirse frente a Kaji, y le dice que está enamorada de él. Kaji simplemente rechaza los avances de esta chica menor de edad y la deja terriblemente frustrada.

Al mismo tiempo, Toji es seleccionado en secreto como el cuarto niño: el cuarto piloto de Eva. Un día, le pide a Shinji que pasen la tarde juntos. El muchacho acepta, y ambos comen, conversan y se divierten, pero Toji está incómodo, quiere hacer una confesión. Mira a Shinji con el mismo miedo y ansiedad que yo -o tal vez ustedes- podría haber experimentado antes de contarle un gran secreto a mi mejor amigo, el tipo de confidencia que debe ser susurrado únicamente en el momento más privado. Eventualmente, Toji se arma de coraje y le dice a Shinji que ha sido elegido por NERV. Excepto que él no tiene elección, NERV lo ha extorsionado: prometiendo administrar los mejores tratamientos a su hermana comatosa, ellos de hecho lo han forzado a asumir un deber que ningún chico de 14 años debería aceptar. Y él está tan asustado. Toji ha evolucionado muchísimo, desde un abusivo aparentemente hostil en el primer volumen a un adolescente con sentimientos complejos y una voz única. Es en estos momentos de miedo que se nos presenta por completo en su dimensión humana. Él tiene tanto miedo como lo tenía/tiene Shinji. 

Shinji hace todo lo que puede para consolar a su amigo, y le dice que no tiene de qué preocuparse. Toji se disculpa por golpear a Shinji el día que se conocieron. "No lo sabía", dice, pero ¿cómo podría saberlo? ¿Cómo podría alguien saber o incluso imaginar lo que significa manejar la maquinaria de destrucción más letal de la Tierra? Pronto, Toji parte para su primer entrenamiento con el Eva Unidad-03, construida por Estados Unidos. No obstante, una entidad desconocida contamina al Eva y se apodera de ella, mientras que Suzuhara está en su interior.

En la subsiguiente batalla, los Eva Unidad-00 y Unidad-02 son sometidos. Sólo Shinji tiene la oportunidad de contraatacar. Pero no puede. No quiere. Si golpea a la Unidad-03 se arriesga a herir a Toji, y ese es un riesgo que no está dispuesto a asumir. Incluso cuando los brazos de este Evangelion negro están a punto de romperle el cuello, Shinji se rehúsa a defenderse. Entonces el comandante Gendo Ikari cercena el vínculo entre Shinji y su Evangelion, y activa el "sistema provisional", una inteligencia artificial que se apodera del Eva. Shinji observará impotente cómo la Unidad-01 le arranca los brazos a su oponente, cómo destroza su cráneo salpicando a los edificios cercanos con toneladas de materia orgánica y cómo, al final, aplasta a Toji como si fuera un inservible maniquí.

La depravación del padre de Shinji ya se había hecho evidente -al obligar a Toji a ser un conejillo de indias para la Unidad-03- pero el nivel de crueldad que demuestra aquí es incluso más refinado: hace que Shinji lo observe todo. Es raro sentirse triste cuando algo como esto le sucede a un personaje ficticio, pero en este caso creo que es comprensible. Quedé conmocionado al ver cómo los agentes de NERV extraen el cuerpo arruinado de un chiquillo de 14 años que era el amigo de Shinji, y de un modo extraño, cruzando las fronteras entre la realidad y la ficción, también un buen amigo mío. Recuerdo cómo me sentí cuando vi por primera vez este episodio del anime, pero por alguna razón desconocida, revivirlo ahora, al leer este volumen, ha hecho que la experiencia tenga un impacto emocional aún más fuerte.

Shinji Ikari

Having read superhero comics for most of my life I realized early on that you only intersect with them, however briefly, at some point in your life. When I was 13 years old I felt closer to Bart Allen (Impulse) who was also 13, but then I got older and he stayed the same age. When I was 15 and then 16 I shared some common traits with Robin (Tim Drake) and Superboy, but then I kept on growing and they didn’t. Established characters are frozen in an eternal limbo of agelessness. Time neither affects nor hurts them. I’ll soon be older than Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent, and I’ll understand why some writers hate the idea of writing about people who stay forever young. 

Nevertheless, something different happened with Neon Genesis Evangelion, as I watched the anime at the time. When I was 14 I felt like I was simultaneously growing up with Shinji Ikari. He didn’t stay frozen in time. He was just like me, a kid learning to find his way into the world. Instead of a momentarily intersection, there was a vital confluence between us. Sounds rather odd, doesn’t it?  But trust me, there are odder things in this fifth volume, which includes stages 27 through 33: “The Party”, “Follow Back Along Your Scar”, “Centopath”, “Catch the G-Shock”, “NERV Blackout”, “The Abyss of Truth” and “Aquarium”.

I think I was 14 or 15 the first time I got drunk, and I mean seriously drunk. Although I hated to dance, I loved parties, mostly –or perhaps exclusively– because of the free alcohol. I had so much fun back then, I could almost step outside of my shell for once, I could almost let other people in. Sure, my first party was quite different from Shinji’s party, which is more of a spontaneous celebration after Misato has been promoted from captain to major, right after Asuka decides to move in with them. Shinji has as much fun with his friends –Toji Suzuhara, Kensuke Aida, Asuka, Misato and Ryoji Kaji– as I had with mine back in the day: “That night was the first time in my life I was ever at a real party… with real friends. I didn’t know anything could feel so good. But I couldn’t help thinking, in the corner of my mind that something so fun couldn’t last long”. Again, it felt like my thoughts were coming right out of Shinji’s mouth.

After a moment of joy comes a lifetime of sorrow. Or almost. There is a brutal encounter between Gendo Ikari and Shinji. His cold father acts in a way that resembles hatred but in true is only the most sincere indifference. He asks Shinji to never look for him again. For the boy, this feels like losing a parent, like being orphaned… but he was already used to not having a father around. No, the most painful part is that Gendo Ikari is still the commander of NERV, and he will still give orders to Shinji and the other Evangelion pilots. 

Evidently, this situation makes Shinji feel depressed. And that almost costs him his life and the lives of every citizen of Tokyo 3 when he almost fails to catch a falling angel –Sahaquiel– the impact of this gigantic body would have meant the complete annihilation of Japan. Aided by Asuka and Rei, the threat is thwarted. Barely. Immediately after that, NERV is sabotaged and a power outage puts everyone on the verge of destruction. They are lucky to restore power, and luckier even to not have been attacked by an angel during that vulnerable moment. After the attack of five deadly angels, NERV had remained unscathed, but it took only the hand of a human to create the possibility of a real catastrophe. And isn’t that terribly human of us? To survive against impossible odds only to destroy ourselves?

Suspicions soon fall upon Ryoji Kaji, who might be a double agent working for Japan’s ministry of interior affairs. But it’s also Kaji who leads Misato and Shinji into Central Dogma, deep within NERV, and shows them Adam, the first angel: an abominable creature of gigantic proportions that lies pinned down to a cross. Adam’s genetic material was used to create the Eva, something that had been kept in secret. It is also thanks to Kaji that Shinji is able to recover a suppressed memory from his childhood: a dark secret that involved his father and his deceased mother.

Después de salvar el mundo te toca estudiar para tus parciales

Al haber leído cómics de súper-héroes buena parte de mi vida, me di cuenta muy pronto que hay una intersección entre ellos y nosotros, por breve que sea, en algún punto de nuestras vidas. Cuando yo tenía 13 años me sentía cercano a Bart Allen (Impulse) quien también tenía 13, pero luego yo crecí y él siguió teniendo la misma edad. Cuando yo tenía 15 y luego 16, mantenía algunos puntos en común con Robin (Tim Drake) y Superboy, pero seguí creciendo y ellos no. Los personajes establecidos están congelados en un limbo eterno en el que nadie envejece. El tiempo no los afecta ni los hiere. Pronto seré más viejo que Bruce Wayne o Clark Kent, y entenderé por qué algunos escritores odian la idea de escribir sobre gente que siempre se mantiene joven. 

No obstante, cuando vi Neon Genesis Evangelion, pasó algo diferente. Cuando tenía 14 sentía que estaba creciendo simultáneamente con Shinji Ikari. Él nunca se quedó congelado en el tiempo. Él era como yo, un chiquillo buscando su lugar en el mundo. En vez de una intersección momentánea, había una confluencia vital entre nosotros. Suena bastante extraño, ¿no es así? Pero confiad en mí, hay cosas más extrañas en este quinto volumen, que incluye las etapas 27 a la 33: "La fiesta", "Sigue de regreso entre tu herida", "Centópata", "Agarra el Choque-G", "Apagón en NERV", "El abismo de la verdad" y "Acuario". 

An unforgettable party / una fiesta inolvidable

Creo que tenía 14 o 15 la primera vez que me emborraché, y quiero decir borrachera en serio. Aunque odiaba bailar, me encantaban las fiestas, sobre todo –o tal vez exclusiva-mente– por el alcohol gratis. Y era muy divertido, casi podía escapar de mi caparazón por un momento, casi podía dejar que otros se acercaran a mí. Sin duda, mi primera fiesta fue muy diferente a la de Shinji, que es más una celebración espontánea después que Misato es ascendida de capitana a mayor, y después que Asuka decide mudarse con ellos. Shinji se divierte tanto con sus amigos –Toji Suzuhara, Kensuke Aida, Asuka, Misato y Ryoji Kaji– como yo con los míos en ese entonces: "Esa noche fue la primera vez en mi vida que estuve en una fiesta de verdad... con amigos de verdad. No sabía que podía sentirme tan bien. Pero no podía evitar pensar, en un rincón de mi mente, que algo tan divertido no podía durar mucho". De nuevo, sentí como si mis pensamientos saliesen de la boca de Shinji.

Después de un momento de regocijo viene una eternidad de lamento. O casi. Hay un brutal encuentro entre Gendo Ikari y Shinji. Su frío padre actúa en una forma que se asemeja al odio, pero en realidad es sólo la más sincera indiferencia. Le pide a Shinji que nunca más lo vuelva a buscar. Para el muchacho, esto es casi como perder un padre, como quedar huérfano... pero ya estaba acostumbrado a no tener padres. Lo más doloroso es que Gendo Ikari sigue siendo el comandante de NERV, y le seguirá dando órdenes a Shinji y a los otros pilotos de los Evangelion.

Adam, the First Angel / Adán, el primer ángel

Evidentemente, esta situación hace que Shinji se deprima. Y eso casi le cuesta la vida a él y a todos los ciudadanos de Tokio 3 cuando casi falla al atrapar a un ángel que cae –Sahaquiel– el impacto de su gigantesco cuerpo habría significado la completa aniquilación de Japón. Ayudado por Asuka y Rei, la amenaza es eliminada. Con las justas. Inmediatamente después, NERV es saboteado y un apagón pone a todos al borde de la destrucción. Por fortuna logran restaurar la energía, y por suerte ningún ángel ataque durante este momento de vulnerabilidad. Después del ataque de 5 mortales ángeles, NERV había permanecido incólume, pero bastó la mano de un humano para crear la posibilidad real de una catástrofe. ¿Y no es eso terriblemente humano? ¿Sobrevivir contra oponentes imposibles solamente para destruirnos a nosotros mismos?

Las sospechas pronto caen sobre Ryoji Kaji, quien podría ser un doble agente trabajando para el ministerio del interior de Japón. Pero es también Kaji quien lleva a Misato y a Shinji a Dogma Central, en lo más profundo de NERV, y les muestra a Adán, el primer ángel: una criatura abominable de gigantescas proporciones que yace clavada a una cruz. El material genético de Adán fue usado para crear los Eva, y esto se había mantenido en secreto. Es también gracias a Kaji que Shinji es capaz de recuperar una memoria suprimida de su infancia: un oscuro secreto que involucraba a su padre y a su fallecida madre.

Asuka Langley Soryu

“For most children, their first self-motivated act is to rebel against their guardian. It’s a validation of their own existence, as well as a test of the guardian”, says doctor Ritsuko Akagi. The permanent fight against authority seems to be a constant of adolescence. Shinji Ikari has already rebelled by trying to run away from NERV. Rei Ayanami, nonetheless, has a fixation with authority: she trusts only in Gendo Ikari –Shinji’s father and the Commander of NERV– her one and only fatherly figure. In many ways, Neon Genesis Evangelion was also a milestone of rebelliousness for me. I remember that although my father loved comic books he had an almost irrational hatred towards manga and anime, which rivaled my mother’s general despise towards all forms of graphic narrative. My passion for Neon Genesis Evangelion was deeply disturbing for both of them but I had to rebel against my guardians… and I did.

But perhaps no one is more of a rebel than Asuka Langley Soryu. She alone defeats an aquatic angel –Gaghiel– by leaping from one transatlantic to another in the middle of the ocean. It takes her only seconds to destroy the threat, thus proving that her control and mastery over her Eva Unit-02 is remarkable. But she is also a very energetic girl and so very competitive, certainly, she’s the opposite of Shinji and Rei. When Shinji tells Rei that he doesn’t know if he’ll get along with the new girl, Ayanami replies with her usual pragmatism: she’ll get along with her, if she’s ordered to. 

Shinji & Asuka 

From the very beginning of this volume (which includes stages 20 through 26: “Asuka Comes to Japan”, “The Un-invited”,“Asuka Attacks”, “Try, Try Again”, “Dissonance”, “Shall We Dance” and “One Moment, One Heart”) a cat and mouse game takes place between Asuka and Shinji, clearly, she’s the dominant one, and the boy feels overpowered by a girl that is so hot that she instantly becomes the object of desire of every male around her. But for all her brilliance and superior intelligence, Asuka is still a 14 year-old girl. And she is always trying to mock Shinji in such juvenile ways that it is refreshing to see her doing so.

And soon, a new angel –Israfel– arrives. With the ability to duplicate itself and attack in unison, it is a formidable foe. Shinji and Asuka cannot defeat it, no matter how try they hard, unless they learn first to attack together in perfect harmony: they must be one mind in two bodies. And in order to accomplish that, Misato orders them to live together, to sleep and wake up at the same time, and to dance, over and over again, until they reach a perfect coordination of movements. This is no easy task, I understood Shinji’s problem right away: you see, I also hated to dance. At the same time, I found Asuka’s complaints hilarious. At first, she refuses to share her bedroom with a member of the opposite sex, alleging that Shinji might get horny in the middle of the night and assault her. Such feeble argument makes Misato laugh, and she affirms that the boy wouldn’t have the guts to do so.

Is Misato right in assuming that Shinji poses no real sexual threat to Asuka’s integrity? The first thing that Asuka does is test Shinji. She enters the room wearing nothing but a towel and asks Shinji if he wants to see her naked. The teenaged boy reacts very nervously, and refuses to participate in this erotic foreplay. But why is that? Is it out of an old-fashioned sense of chivalry? Is it pure prudishness? There is something deliciously ambiguous about the way Shinji carries himself around Asuka. And I can’t quite put my finger on it but there is something about him that makes me think that –in a similar situation–  I would have reacted pretty much in the same way, but then again, I wouldn’t be the only one…   

Eventually, Shinji and Asuka learn how to be one mind in two bodies. And it is thanks to what they have accomplished together that they are able to kill the dual angel. I used to feel slightly uncomfortable with Asuka when I first watched the anime. Now, seeing her again after so many years, I’ve grown very fond of her. In fact, she reminds me of one of my best friends: she lives in Belgium now, but her energy and enthusiasm are always with me.

Asuka pinching Shinji / Asuka pellizcando a Shinji

"Para la mayoría de los niños, su primer acto de motivación propia es rebelarse contra su guardián. Es una validación de su existencia, así como una prueba para el guardián", dice la doctora Ritsuko Akagi. La permanente pelea contra la autoridad parece ser una constante de la adolescencia. Shinji Ikari ya se ha rebelado al tratar de huir de NERV. Rei Ayanami, no obstante, tiene una fijación con la autoridad: confía sólo en Gendo Ikari –el padre de Shinji y el comandante de NERV– su única figura paterna. En cierto modo, Neon Genesis Evangelion también fue un hito de rebeldía para mí. Recuerdo que aunque mi padre amaba los cómics tenía un odio casi irracional hacia el manga y el anime, que rivalizaba con el desprecio generalizado de mi madre hacia toda forma de narrativa gráfica. Mi pasión por Neon Genesis Evangelion era muy perturbadora para ambos, pero yo tenía que rebelarme contra mis guardianes y eso fue lo que hice.

Sin embargo tal vez nadie es más rebelde que Asuka Langley Soryu. Ella sola derrota a un ángel acuático –Gaghiel– saltando de un transatlántico a otro en medio del océano. Le lleva sólo segundos destruir la amenaza, demostrando así que su control y dominio del Eva Unidad-02 es sobresaliente. Pero ella también en una chica muy enérgica y muy competitiva, ciertamente, es lo opuesto a Shinji y Rei. Cuando Shinji le dice a Rei que no sabe si se llevará bien con la chica recién llegada, Ayanami responde con su usual pragmatismo: se llevará bien con la nueva, si es que así se lo ordenan.

Desde el inicio de este volumen (que incluye las etapas 20 a 26: "Asuka llega a Japón", "El no invitado", "Asuka ataca", "Intenta, intenta de nuevo", "Disonancia", "Bailaremos" y "Un momento, un corazón"), se desarrolla un juego del gato y el ratón entre Asuka y Shinji, es claro que ella es la dominante, y el chico se siente abrumado por una chica tan sensual que instantáneamente se convierte en el objeto de deseo para todos los machos a su alrededor. A pesar de su lucidez e inteligencia, Asuka todavía es una niña de 14 años. Y siempre está tratando de burlarse de Shinji de maneras tan juveniles como refrescantes. 

Y pronto, un nuevo ángel  –Israfel– llega. Con la habilidad de duplicarse a sí mismo y atacar al unísono, es un enemigo formidable. Shinji y Asuka no pueden vencerlo, sin importar lo mucho que se esfuercen, a menos que aprendan primero a atacar juntos en perfecta armonía: ellos deben ser una mente en dos cuerpos. Y para lograrlo, Misato les ordena que vivan juntos, que duerman juntos y que se despierten al mismo tiempo, y que dancen, una y otra vez, hasta que alcancen una perfecta coordinación de movimientos. Esta no es una tarea fácil, entendí los problemas de Shinji en un segundo: verán, yo también odiaba bailar. Al mismo tiempo, me reí muchísimo con las quejas de Asuka. Al principio, ella se rehúsa a compartir el mismo dormitorio con un miembro del sexo opuesto, alegando que Shinji podría ponerse cachondo en medio de la noche y abusar de ella. Tan endeble argumento provoca la risa en Misato, quien afirma que el muchacho no tendría los cojones de hacer algo así.

¿Misato tiene la razón al asumir que Shinji no representa ninguna amenaza sexual a la integridad de Asuka? Lo primero que Asuka hace es poner a prueba a Shinji. Ella entra en la habitación usando solamente una toalla y le pregunta a Shinji si quiere verla desnuda. El adolescente reacciona muy nerviosamente, y se rehúsa a participar en este juego preliminar erótico. Pero, ¿por qué? ¿Es por una caballerosidad pasada de moda? ¿Es por puro pudor? Hay algo deliciosamente ambiguo en la forma en la que Shinji se comporta con Asuka. Y es difícil discernir lo que sucede pero hay algo en él que me hace pensar que –en una situación similar– yo hubiera reaccionado del mismo modo pero, desde luego, no habría sido el único...

Eventualmente, Shinji y Asuka aprenden cómo ser una mente en dos cuerpos. Y es gracias a lo que han logrado juntos que son capaces de matar al ángel dual. Solía sentirme ligeramente incómodo con Asuka la primera vez que vi el anime. Ahora, al verla de nuevo después de tantos años, la aprecio mucho más que antes. De hecho, me recuerda a una de mis mejores amigas: ahora ella vive en Bélgica, pero su energía y entusiasmo siempre están conmigo.

Some teenagers are intensely melancholic, apathetic even. They seem to float around the world without ever touching anyone. Without ever compromising, without ever taking the risk of letting people in: I used to be like that. And Shinji Ikari, of course, is like that.

After two volumes and literally hundreds of pages, he hasn’t even smiled once. And suddenly, just after he’s about to embark home with Misato Katsuragi, he runs into Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida, perhaps his only two friends. It is in that moment, after fooling around with the guys, that Shinji finally laughs. It is a sound that Misato had never heard before. 

Remembering the past / Recordando el pasado

“I guess maybe I was just going through the motions of living”, Shinji confesses. And that reminds me of a great line from Nicole Kidman in The Hours: “My life has been stolen from me. I'm living in a town I have no wish to live in. I'm living a life I have no wish to live”. I felt completely identified with that phrase for most of my adolescence. So I understood Shinji perfectly, I knew what it felt like to go through the motions, to accept life as an obligation instead of an opportunity. There are so many philosophical interrogations in stages 13 through 19 (“White Scars”, “The Warped Room”, “What her Crimson Eyes Believe In”, “Abandoned Memories”, “The Night Before Battle”, “Blood Battle” and “The Moon Inside the Darkness”) but also action and interaction between the protagonist and the rest of the cast. 

As the days go by, Misato and her new roommate Shinji learn to share the same house and coexist without unnecessary tensions… The only thing that seems to bother Shinji is the way that Misato hangs around wearing quite revealing clothes. But, wouldn’t it be a boy’s wet dream to live with a sexy woman who has no inhibitions? The thing is that, perhaps, Shinji isn’t like most boys. He isn’t like Toji or Kensuke, who are always chasing girls.

There is a very peculiar scene that takes place in Rei Ayanami’s house. Doctor Ritsuko Akagi has forgotten to give Rei’s new NERV ID card, and so Shinji has to go to her place and deliver the card. He finds a very deteriorated building and as he steps into Rai’s unlocked apartment all he can find are the signs of poverty and abandonment: dusty floors, dirty walls and lots of garbage everywhere. Sure, Shinji doesn’t live in a palace either –on the contrary, Katsuragi’s apartment is very modest– but at least he’s used to a modicum of order and decorum. None of that exists in Rai’s place. These heroes who have saved the world live like everyone else, without luxuries or sophistications –they are, indeed, in the opposite spectrum of traditional Western heroes like the Avengers who live on mansion in Fifth Avenue or the Justice League who reside on a satellite, far above the world, like gods instead of mortal men–.

It is in this filthy space that Rei presents herself naked, and Shinji, out of nervousness trips and falls on top of her. There is a delicious moment of hesitation, almost of sexual tension, when Shinji is on top of her, unable to react, to either move further or remove himself from this strange embrace. Rei, as devoid of emotions as usual, doesn’t do or say anything. Shinji apologizes for intruding and drops the card. And leaves quickly. Is it the taste of unresolved sexual tensions what we –the readers– feel after this sequence? Or is it something else? Something darker and harder to explain?

I can affirm that no such thing as love can exist between this boy and this emotionless girl. But there is complicity. And camaraderie. All of this is made evident when they both face a flying angel –Ramiel– with the form of a rhombus, a creature with the ability to destroy everything within a fifty miles radius. To defeat it, Shinji uses a particle cannon that will consume the entire energy supply of Japan, and Rei will shield him against the lethal energy blast of the angel. Alone, none of them can triumph, together they succeed.

An awkward encounter / Un incómodo encuentro

Algunos adolescentes son intensamente melancólicos, apáticos incluso. Parecen flotar alrededor del mundo sin tocar a nadie. Sin comprometerse, sin arriesgarse a permitir la cercanía del otro: yo era así. Y Shinji Ikari, por supuesto, es así. Después de dos volúmenes y literalmente centenares de páginas, él no ha sonreído ni una vez. Y repentinamente, justo cuando está por embarcarse rumbo a casa con Misato Katsuragi, se topa con Toji Suzuhara y Kensuke Aida, tal vez sus únicos dos amigos. Es en ese momento, después de tontear con los chicos, que Shinji finalmente ríe. Es un sonido que Misato nunca antes había escuchado.

"Supongo que quizás solamente estaba viviendo en automático", confiesa Shinji. Y eso me recuerda una brillante línea de Nicole Kidman en "The Hours": "Mi vida me ha sido robada. Estoy viviendo en un pueblo en el que no deseo vivir. Estoy viviendo una vida que no tengo deseos de vivir". Me sentí completamente identificado con esa frase durante mi adolescencia. Así que entendía a Shinji perfectamente, sabía lo que era vivir en automático, aceptar la vida como una obligación en vez de una oportunidad. Hay tantas interrogantes filosóficas en las etapas 13 a la 19 ("Cicatrices blancas", "La habitación torcida", "Lo que sus ojos carmesí creen", "Memorias abandonadas", "La noche antes de la batalla", "Batalla, sangre" y "La luna dentro de la oscuridad") pero también acción e interacción entre el protagonista y el resto del elenco.

Los días pasan, Misato y Shinji aprenden a compartir la misma casa y a coexistir sin tensiones innecesarias... Lo único que parece causarle molestias a Shinji es que Misato usa ropas muy reveladoras. Pero, ¿no sería el sueño húmedo de todo muchacho vivir con una mujer sexy y sin inhibiciones? El asunto, tal vez, es que Shinji no es como la mayoría de los chicos. Él no es como Toji o Kensuke, que siempre están detrás de las chicas.  

Hay una escena muy peculiar que ocurre en la casa de Rei Ayanami. La doctora Ritsuko Akagi ha olvidado darle a Rei su nuevo tarjeta de identificación de NERV, así es que Shinji tiene que ir a su casa y entregarle la tarjeta. Él encuentra un edificio muy deteriorado y al entrar al departamento de Rei lo único que ve son señales de pobreza y abandono: pisos polvorientos, muros sucios y basura por doquier. De hecho, Shinji tampoco vive en un palacio -al contrario, el departamento de Katsuragi es muy modesto- pero al menos está acostumbrado a un mínimo de orden y decoro. Nada de esto existe en la habitación de Rei. Estos héroes que han salvado el mundo viven como cualquier otra persona, sin lujos ni sofisticaciones -ellos están, por cierto, en el espectro opuesto de los tradicionales héroes occidentales como los Vengadores que viven en una mansión en la Quinta Avenida o los de la Liga de la Justicia que residen en un satélite, muy por encima del mundo, como dioses en vez de mortales-.

Es en este mugriento lugar en el que Rei aparece desnuda y Shinji, por puro nerviosismo, se tropieza y se cae encima de ella. Hay un momento delicioso de incerti-dumbre, casi de tensión sexual, cuando Shinji está encima de ella, incapaz de reaccionar, de dar un paso más o un paso atrás. Rei, tan desprovista de emociones como siempre, no hace ni dice nada. Shinji se disculpa por haber entrado sin permiso y deja la tarjeta. Y se va rápidamente. ¿Lo que sentimos -nosotros los lectores- después de esta secuencia es el sabor de las tensiones sexuales no resueltas? ¿O es algo más? ¿Algo más oscuro y más arduo de explicar?

Puedo afirmar que algo como el amor no puede existir entre este chico y esta chica sin emociones. Pero hay complicidad. Y camaradería. Todo esto se hace evidente cuando ambos se enfrentan contra un ángel volador –Ramiel– que tiene la forma de un rombo, una criatura con la habilidad de destruirlo todo en un radio de 50 millas. Para derrotarlo, Shinji usa un cañón de partículas que consumirá todo el suministro eléctrico de Japón, y Rei será su escudo contra el letal rayo de energía del ángel. Solo, ninguno de ellos puede triunfar; juntos logran la victoria.

Unit-00 and pilot / Unidad-00 y piloto

As a teenager you seek the approval of your peers. And, at least theoretically, you don’t give a damn about the approval of your parents, which was fundamental in your childhood. But in one way or another, you are ardently seeking for approval, which ultimately turns you into a slave of socialization. To define yourself, you depend on the other. Before getting to know yourself you must first know those around you.

After driving the Eva and successfully destroying the second angel, Shinji Ikari demands nothing but a sign of approval from his father, a hug, a warm phrase, anything. But of course, he gets nothing, only the indifference of a man who has neglected him for years. And when Misato Katsuragi –his newly self-appointed tutor– praises him for saving the world, Shinji simply starts crying. He wanted to hear those words from his father.

This second volume compiles stages 7 through 12: “Closing Hearts”, “Shinji’s Mood”, “The Trials of a True Fan”, “Shonen and Knife”, “Third Child Wandering”, “Fumbling toward Kindness”. Once Shinji recovers from his wounds, he’s transferred to a new high school. But not every kid in school is thankful for his ability to drive the EVA. In fact, Toji Suzuhara blames Shinji for the accident his sister suffered during the battle. Toji punches Shinji, and Shinji is unable to report him. The savior of the world bites the dust in a schoolyard. 

Rei Ayanami

I remember that my first years in high school were no walk in the park. Granted, I was never hit or publicly humiliated, but that doesn’t mean things were easy for me. I always had a hard time adapting. I felt unnecessary. And I guess that’s why I always fantasized with the idea of leaving everything behind me. So I definitely felt identified with Shinji when he tries to run away from the city. Alone in the forest, he comes to a brilliant conclusion: “No matter how long I keep walking around, there’s no place for me to go. I’m just running away from the facts…”. It took me years to figure that out, it took me a long time to face the facts about my life, to accept who I was, and to wisely embrace both, my defects and my virtues.

Something resonated deep within me whenever I noticed Shinji’s insane obsession with death. What was it that attracted me so to this character? I can’t be sure, all I can say is that Misato’s reaction to Shinji’s pessimism, although emotional, is also very logical: “You may feel fine about dying… But the rest of us aren’t quite ready for it yet!”. Millions of people want to live, and their only hope lies in the hands of a boy who is so depressed that he doesn’t care about life. There is such a tragic beauty in this concept, and it is an idea that has fascinated me for years. To what extent do we depend on someone else? Is it our duty to stay alive just to please others? That seems to be Meryl Streep’s conclusion in “The Hours”, when she talks to Ed Harris and says: "That is what we do. That is what people do. They stay alive for each other". They certainly do, but out of good will or obligation?

After only three weeks since the attack, Shamshel –the third angel– arrives. This time, Shinji does everything he can to stop it and he barely makes it. The teenager discovers that being an Eva pilot is harder than anything else so, eventually, he decides to quit NERV. Except that he can’t really make up his mind. Does he want to remain in NERV and save the world? Or his only desire is to return to his old life and the way things were before? The uncertainty is very much a part of the teenage mind, as it was a significant part of my life throughout those years.

Asuka, Shinji & Rei

I said before that in order to define yourself, you must rely on the other, whether by will or by force. This is something that Shinji slowly realizes as Misato finally speaks honestly with him: she had requested Shinji to move in with her not to keep an eye on him or to give him orders, but rather to be accompanied. Without a loving partner, Misato feels that her penguin pet and Shinji are all she has left, for all intents and purposes, they are her family. In the end, Shinji accepts this gift, the gift of companionship, which can be a burden or a reward, but ultimately, also the indispensable requisite to define –or redefine– himself.

Shinji's Mood / El ánimo de Shinji

Como adolescente, buscas la aprobación de tus pares. Y, al menos teóricamente, no te importa la aprobación de tus familiares, que era fundamental en tu infancia. Pero de un modo u otro, buscas fervientemente la aprobación, lo que en última instancia te convierte en un esclavo de la socialización. Para definirte a ti mismo, dependes del otro. Antes de conocerte debes conocer a los que te rodean.

Luego de dirigir el Eva y destruir al segundo ángel con éxito, lo único que demanda Shinji Ikari es una señal de aprobación de su padre, un abrazo, una palabra cálida, lo que sea. Pero, por supuesto, lo único que obtiene es la indiferencia del hombre que lo abandonó por años. Y cuando Misato Katsuragi –su nueva auto-nombrada tutora– lo alienta por salvar al mundo, Shinji simplemente empieza a llorar. Él quería escuchar estas palabras de su padre. 

Este segundo volumen recopila las etapas 7 a la 12: "Corazones en cierre", "El ánimo de Shinji", "Los juicios de un verdadero fan", "Shonen y cuchillo", "El tercer niño deambulando", "Titubeando hacia la oscuridad". Una vez que Shinji se recupera de sus heridas, es transferido a un nuevo colegio. Pero no todos los chicos de secundaria están agradecidos. De hecho, Toji Suzuhara culpa a Shinji por al accidente que sufrió su hermana durante la batalla. Toji empuja a Shinji, y Shinji es incapaz de acusarlo. El salvador del mundo muerde el polvo en un patio de escuela.

Recuerdo que mis primeros años en secundaria no fueron fáciles. Si bien es cierto que nunca fui golpeado o humillado en público, eso no significa que las cosas marchaban espléndidamente. Me costaba mucho adaptarme. Me sentía innecesario. Y supongo que por eso siempre fantaseaba con la idea de dejar todo eso atrás. Así que definitivamente me sentí identificado con Shinji cuando trata de huir de la ciudad. En el bosque, solo, llega a una conclusión: "No importa qué tan lejos camine, no hay lugar adonde ir. Sólo estoy escapando de los hechos...". Me tomó años comprender eso, me llevó mucho tiempo enfrentarme a los hechos de mi vida, aceptar quién era, y asimilar sabiamente tanto mis defectos como mis virtudes.

Algo resonaba profundamente en mí cada vez que notaba la enfermiza obsesión de Shinji por la muerte. ¿Qué era lo que tanto me atraía de este personaje? No puedo estar seguro, lo único que puedo decir es que la reacción de Misato al pesimismo de Shinji, aunque muy emocional, es también bastante lógica: "Tú puedes sentirte bien con morir... ¡pero los demás no estamos nada preparados para la muerte!". Millones de personas quieren vivir, y su única esperanza yace en las manos de un chico que está tan deprimido que no parece valorar la vida. Hay tanta belleza trágica en este concepto, y es una idea que me ha fascinado por años. ¿Hasta qué extremo dependemos de alguien más? ¿Es nuestro deber permanecer con vida para complacer a otros? Esa sería la conclusión de Meryl Streep en “The Hours”, cuando habla con Ed Harris y le dice: "Eso es lo que hacemos. Eso es lo que la gente hace. Siguen con vida por el otro". Y ciertamente es así, pero ¿por buena voluntad o por obligación?

Kensuke Aida, Shinji Ikari & Toji Suzuhara

Después de sólo tres semanas desde el ataque, Shamshel –el tercer ángel– llega. Esta vez, Shinji hace todo lo que puede para detenerlo y apenas lo consigue. El adolescente descubre que ser un piloto del Eva es más difícil que cualquier otra cosa así que, eventualmente, decide renunciar a NERV. Excepto que no puede aclarar sus pensamientos. ¿Quiere permanecer en NERV y salvar al mundo? ¿O su único deseo es regresar a su antigua vida? La incertidumbre es fuerte en la mente del adolescente, y para mí también fue así durante esos años.

Dije antes que para definirte a ti mismo, debes apoyarte en el otro, ya sea por voluntad propia o a la fuerza. Esto es algo que Shinji descubre lentamente cuando Misato por fin habla honestamente con él: ella había solicitado que Shinji se mudase a su casa no para vigilarlo o darle órdenes, sino más bien para estar acompañada. Sin pareja, Misato siente que su pingüino de mascota y Shinji son todo lo que ella tiene, en términos prácticos, son su familia. Al final, Shinji acepta este regalo, el regalo ser acompañado, algo que puede ser una carga o una recompensa, pero en definitiva, también el requisito indispensable para definirse –o redefinirse– a sí mismo.
