2025 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

After 9 years living in the US, I finally had to say goodbye. Moving to Ireland turned out to be quite challenging. Still, even with all the frustrations and things not working out the way they should, I found solace in the pages of a meaningful amount of comic books. Comics have never deserted, and neither will they desert you. I can promise that. 

Just like we do with films, novels or any other form of artistic expression, we have to choose. Criteria. Selectiveness. Appreciation. It all comes together when I start working on my monthly list of comics. And there is also a necessity for balance. Sticking with the same old titles or creators, or venturing into new lands, ready to experience novelty, even though novelty in itself is no guarantee of quality. It’s fairly safe to say I managed to keep that balance. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the 15th annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Ever since reading Thor God of Thunder over a decade ago, I’ve been a big Jason Aaron fan. And 2025 was definitely Aaron’s year, with his captivating miniseries Bug Wars and, especially, his fascinating and deeply touching Absolute Superman. These are by far the best Superman stories I’ve read probably since John Brne revamped the character. That’s why Aaron is the best writer of the year. Of course, there are two other writers who deserve a round of applause: Scott Snyder for his brutal and haunting Absolute Batman and Grant Morrison for his hilarious Batman / Deadpool. 

I always end up with so many artists and it’s so difficult to narrow down the list. Lots of talented comic book artists out there, but the beautiful, rich and moody art of J.G. Jones in Dust to Dust caught my attention from the beginning. David Finch is producing what I think is probably the best work in his career (and that’s saying a lot) in the pages of Skinbreaker, wonderful pages full of life and rich details. Mahmud Asrar surprised me with the craziest insects in Bug Wars, worldbuilding (miniature size) at its best!  

A cover makes or breaks the book. It might very well be the only thing we see (especially when preordering months advance). 40 years ago Brian Bolland broke the mold with his elegant lines and his unique and powerful designs, it’s almost unbelievable to see how, after half a century, Bolland continues to shine brighter than ever. Special congratulations to Jae Lee, for his striking imagery in Krypto: the Last Dog of Krypton; and David Finch for his outstanding work in Skinbreaker.

Michael Dean successfully completed a very ambitious editorial project: publishing Lost Marvels. Once again, Fantagraphics Comics proves to have a truly impressive array of editors and for that, as readers, we should be thankful.

It actually took me a while to make my final decision between Absolute Batman and Absolute Superman. In the end, I chose Absolute Batman #10 because it shows, in just one issue, why Batman is such an inspiring superhero without having superpowers, as he’s put to the test in the most brutal and cruel way I’ve seen in a comic book. Honestly, Absolute Batman #10 is an unforgettable comic that no one could possibly replicate! 

I haven’t read Superman comics in so many years. It’s hard to believe that now the Man of Steel has returned to the spotlight. Indeed, Absolute Superman continues to be a mind-blowing saga, with unique and powerful moments that can move any reader, and a plethora of groundbreaking ideas and spectacular concepts. So yes, Absolute Superman is the best ongoing series of 2025!

As usual, I’ve read many wonderful miniseries in the past 12 months, but only one completely took me by surprise and redefined what a big crossover event could be: One World Under Doom is hands down the best big Marvel saga I’ve read in over a decade, Ryan North is truly a brilliant writer and his One World Under Doom is the best limited series of the year. 

It’s good practice to always try out as many new titles as possible. You never know what you might find, and sometimes you make some phenomenal discoveries. There have been many exciting new series this year: Bug Wars, Assorted Crisis Events, Absolute Flash, Batman Dark Patterns, Superman the Kryptonite Spectrum, Everything Dead & Dying and Skinbreaker. However, Ryan North’s Fantastic Four deserves the title as best new series.

From Fantagraphics Comics comes Lost Marvels HC Vol. 1 Tower of Shadows, reprinting material from half a century ago, a magnificent selection of talented creators such as Jim Steranko and John Buscema, and including exciting material by masters such as Barry Windsor-Smith. This archival collection is an absolute delight and deserves all the accolades it can get.

20 years ago I remembered how deeply disappointed I felt with DC’s Final Crisis and many other absurd editorial decisions. I don’t think DC has been in a good place creatively since then, although it has definitely improved in the last few years. Now, in 2025, with so many interesting projects, the resurrection of Vertigo and especially with the Absolute line (Absolute Superman, Absolute Batman, Absolute Flash, Absolute Wonder Woman, etc.), I decided to give credit where credit is due. DC is the best publisher of the year.

In previous years I’ve expressed my appreciation towards several online sites, and this time I’ve decided to give the best comics-related webpage award to https://aiptcomics.com/, which I visit sporadically. Adventures in Poort Taste (AIPT) is always a good online resource for comics and pop culture in general!

Last year was devasting in terms of talented creators that passed away. Unfortunately, every year we must say goodbye to writers and artists that we hold dear in our hearts. In 2025, one of my all-time favorite writers died: Peter David. I will always remember how much I loved Peter David’s Young Justice, a comic that turned me into a lifelong fan, or The Atlantis Chronicles, a fascinating miniseries, or Madrox and then X-Factor, consistently one of Marvel’s best ongoing titles for half a decade. I had the honor of meeting Peter David in person when he visited Lima, in 2011, he was absolutely hilarious and so full of life. Due to multiple health issues, since 2022 Peter David had to ask fans for help to pay his medical bills; it truly is heartbreaking to accept that he is gone. The first time I saw the artwork of Jackson 'Butch' Guice was in the Death of Superman saga, dynamic and full of energy, his style was very special, he also in titles such as X-Factor, The New Mutants and Iron Man; Guice died of pneumonia. Controversial as an editor, Jim Shooter was the man responsible for many successful sagas and storylines, although also the cause of notorious falling outs especially with John Byrne, Shooter wrote the popular Secret Wars and also Star Brand, a comic that I particularly enjoyed. Talented British artist Dave Taylor illustrated important characters at some point, such as Batman and Judge Dredd, clean and elegant lines made his work unforgettable. I became familiar with Tod Smith comics in the pages of Omega Men and Vigilante, two of my favorite DC ongoing titles from the 80s, a great artist and a veteran of the industry, he died due to a long illness.

Luego de 9 años viviendo en Estados Unidos, finalmente tuve que despedirme. Mudarme a Irlanda resultó ser todo un reto. Aun así, a pesar de todas las frustraciones y de que las cosas no salieran como debían, encontré consuelo en las páginas de una cantidad considerable de cómics. Seguir con los mismos títulos o creadores de siempre, o aventurarme en nuevos territorios, dispuesto a experimentar la novedad, aunque la novedad en sí misma no garantiza la calidad. Se puede decir con bastante seguridad que logré mantener ese equilibrio. Así que, sin más preámbulos, os invito 15ª edición anual de los AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Desde que leí Thor: God of Thunder hace más de una década, soy un gran fan de Jason Aaron. Y 2025 fue sin duda el año de Aaron, con su cautivadora miniserie Bug Wars y, especialmente, su fascinante y profundamente conmovedor Absolute Superman. Estas son, de lejos, las mejores historias de Superman que he leído, probablemente desde que John Brne renovó el personaje. Por eso Aaron es el mejor escritor del año. Por supuesto, hay otros dos escritores que merecen un aplauso: Scott Snyder por su brutal e inquietante Absolute Batman y Grant Morrison por su divertidísimo Batman / Deadpool.

Siempre termino con tantos artistas que resulta muy difícil reducir la lista. Hay muchísimos artistas de cómics con talento, pero el hermoso, rico y melancólico arte de J.G. Jones en Dust to Dust me llamó la atención desde el principio. David Finch está produciendo lo que creo que es probablemente el mejor trabajo de su carrera (y eso es mucho decir) en las páginas de Skinbreaker: páginas maravillosas llenas de vida y gran riqueza de detalles. Mahmud Asrar me sorprendió con los insectos más disparatados de Bug Wars, ¡un mundo en miniatura en su máxima expresión!

La portada es clave para el éxito o el fracaso de un cómic. Podría ser lo único que veamos (sobre todo si compramos cómics con meses de antelación). Hace 40 años, Brian Bolland rompió moldes con sus elegantes líneas y sus diseños únicos e impactantes; es casi increíble ver cómo, después de medio siglo, Bolland sigue brillando con más fuerza que nunca. Felicitaciones especiales a Jae Lee por su impactante imaginería en Krypto: the Last Dog of Krypton; y a David Finch por su excepcional trabajo en Skinbreaker.

Michael Dean completó con éxito un ambicioso proyecto editorial: publicar Lost Marvels. Una vez más, Fantagraphics Comics demuestra tener una impresionante selección de editores, y por eso, como lectores, debemos estar agradecidos.

La verdad es que me llevó un tiempo decidirme entre Absolute Batman y Absolute Superman. Al final, elegí Absolute Batman #10 porque demuestra, en un solo número, por qué Batman es un superhéroe tan inspirador sin tener superpoderes, al ser puesto a prueba de la forma más brutal y cruel que he visto en un cómic. Sinceramente, ¡Absolute Batman #10 es un cómic inolvidable que nadie podría replicar!

Hacía tantos años que no leía cómics de Superman. Cuesta creer que ahora el Hombre de Acero haya vuelto a la fama. De hecho, Absolute Superman sigue siendo una saga alucinante, con momentos únicos e impactantes que pueden conmover a cualquier lector, y una plétora de ideas innovadoras y conceptos espectaculares. Como de costumbre, he leído muchas miniseries maravillosas en los últimos 12 meses, pero sólo una me sorprendió por completo y redefinió lo que podría ser un gran evento crossover: One World Under Doom es, sin duda, la mejor gran saga de Marvel que he leído en más de una década. Ryan North es un escritor realmente brillante y su One World Under Doom es la mejor serie limitada del año.

Es una buena práctica probar siempre tantos títulos nuevos como sea posible. Nunca se sabe lo que se puede encontrar, y a veces se hacen descubrimientos fenomenales. Este año ha habido muchas series nuevas y emocionantes: Bug Wars, Assorted Crisis Events, Absolute Flash, Batman Dark Patterns, Superman the Kryptonite Spectrum, Everything Dead & Dying y Skinbreaker. Sin embargo, Fantastic Four de Ryan North merece el título como mejor serie nueva.

Desde Fantagraphics Comics llega Lost Marvels HC Vol. 1. Tower of Shadows, que reimprime material de hace medio siglo, con una magnífica selección de creadores talentosos como Jim Steranko y John Buscema, e incluye material emocionante de maestros como Barry Windsor-Smith. Esta colección de archivo es una auténtica delicia y merece todos los elogios posibles.

2024 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

Every weekend I sit down, relax and read as many comic books as I can. For me, that is always pure pleasure. And sure, some people might criticize me for the (rather) large amount of comics I buy during the year. And I could always buy more! But I make an effort in selecting the tittles I consider more promising, and usually I’m pretty good at predicting their quality.

As the years go by, it becomes increasingly difficult to balance the amount of new and old comic books I buy monthly. In 2024 I’ve had the pleasure to read classic horror comics from the 70s as well as brand new series from major publishers. My purpose here is to highlight works published during the year that I find especially inspiring. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the 14th annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Ideas, concepts, plots. Without a good writer, the stories we read won’t hold any special meaning in our hearts. Instead of choosing one writer I’ve decided to include three on the list: Ryan North for his touching, compelling and highly intelligent scripts in “Fantastic Four”. James Tynion IV for his fascinating combination of horror and science fiction in “The Nice House by the Sea”. And Mark Russell for his captivating chronicle through the decades of “Batman: Dark Age”. 

Art is what elevates the comic book medium. Throughout the decades, pencilers and inkers have experimented with different styles and artistic approaches. But regardless of the year or the name of the artist, graphic quality has always been the most important component of the ninth art. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months, so it’s only fair to reward them appropriately: Álvaro Martínez Bueno for his impressive array of visual styles in techniques in “The Nice House by the Sea”, Ben Stenbeck for his sleek designs dynamic compositions in “Our Bones Dust” and Rafa Sandoval for his vibrant and energetic in the pages of “Absolute Superman”.  

A cover has to capture our attention immediately. The mission of the cover is to seduce possible readers. So it has to be attractive, it has to outshine all other covers, it has to persuade us to acquire the book. Drawing an eye-catching cover is no easy task. Luckily, there are artists that continue to amaze me with their output: Álvaro Martínez Bueno for his stunning covers in “The Nice House by the Sea”, Chris Weston for his splendid cover in “Blood Squad Seven” and Adi Granov for his solemn take on “Doom”.

Some fans don’t pay attention to editors, but they work constantly to provide us with the best possible comics. In this case the award goes to Dana Marie Andra (Fantagraphics) for putting together the superb hardcover edition of The Complete Web of Horror.

As always, faithful to the rules of the AAA, I can only choose material originally published in 2024. So the distinction for Best Single Issue goes to Fantastic Four # 25, a great example of Ryan North’s talent as a writer as well as his proposal for Marvel’s premiere superhero family: standalone stories with a fresh sci-fi twist. This particular issue absolutely fantastic, moving and shocking in ways that no one could anticipate.

I regret not buying Fantastic Four since the first issue came out a couple of years ago. Fortunately I gave it a try and I could not stop reading more of Ryan North’s unique take on the superhero quartet. “Fantastic Four” is the best ongoing series of the year and it also happens to be the best title Marvel has published in quite a while.

There have been many wonderful miniseries (“Our Bones Dust”, “Animal Pound”, “Avengers: Twilight” and “Get Fury”) but the prize to best limited series goes to “Batman: Dark Age”. Mark Russell successfully recreates Batman’s life, making him age in real time and confronting him with the crucial moments of each decade. Everything ends in 1985, with Crisis on Infinite Earths.

There were so many promising new series in 2024 that I had a hard time making a selection. Titles as impressive as “Absolute Batman”, “Absolute Superman”, “Blood Squad Seven”, “Plastic Man No More” and “Mystique” were in my list. However, in the end, I decided to choose “The Nice House by the Sea” as the Best New Series. James Tynion IV successfully returns to the complex and uncanny universe of The Nice House on the Lake.

I’ve often said that Bernie Wrightson has always been one of the greatest and most influential artists ever. However, some of his works had remained unpublished until today, with the release of “The Complete Web of Horror,” reprinting for the first time the short-lived horror series in addition to never-before-seen material. Definitely, the best archival collection / reprint of the year.

As much as I enjoy reading titles from Marvel and DC, I’m always on the lookout for new and more independent publishers. In 2024, Boom! proved that they remain committed to the comic book scene, publishing amazing titles such as “Animal Pound”. So Boom! is the best publisher of the year.

Offering comprehensive comic book coverage, https://www.superherohype.com/, continues to produce quality articles. I applaud the work of all the collaborators that put so much effort in SuperHeroHype.com. Cheers to them!

 

“Ars longa, vita brevis” goes an old Latin saying. Art, indeed, can be everlasting even if our lives are not. In 2024 we say goodbye to several prominent creators: Greg Hildebrandt, famous illustrator who specialized in sci-fi and fantasy. Ramona Fradon, co-creator of the beloved character Metamorpho. I attended a Trina Robbins event at UWM, an artist that combined her interest in feminism while contributing to Wonder Woman, she passed away at 86. British artist Paul Neary worked from 2000AD to Marvel’s The Ultimates, and won prestigious awards such as the Eisner and the Eagle. Perhaps the most tragic event in years was the death of Ed Piskor, 41 years old, who facing accusations of sexual misconduct took his own life; incredibly talented as a writer and artist, Piskor was a creator with a unique voice, and produced some of the strongest and most intense comics I’ve read in my life, I became familiar with his work only a couple of years ago; too late unfortunately. For 14 years I’ve included this section, and every year it’s sadder than the previous one, especially now that I’m still in disbelief after losing two of my all-time favorite artists: Michael Zull and John Cassaday. Michael Zulli was an absolute master, and his work resonated with me deeply after I saw it for the first time in the pages of Sandman, after that, I’ve made an effort to find pretty much all of his comics and also contributed to his Kickstarter campaign: Fracture of the Universal Boy; and even Neil Gaiman twitted about my blog review of the graphic novel (which translated into thousands of people suddenly visiting my blog in a single day); I’ve always admired Zulli and I’m terribly sad to know that he’s gone. For me, finding out that John Cassaday lost his battle against cancer at 52 has been tremendously devastating. As it might happen to every new comic book writer, I always fantasized with the possibility of working with him one day. Ever since I discovered Cassaday’s magnificent art in the pages of Astonishing X-Men I immediately became a fan, and for the last 10 years or so I’ve been tracking down all his comics, many of which I’ve reviewed on this blog: Union Jack, Star Wars, I Am Legion, Uncanny Avengers, Captain America, the groundbreaking Planetary (which I reviewed issue by issue, to showcase Cassaday’s extraordinary art), I often referred to him as the best artist of the first decade of this century and when I illustrated some of my own comics, my signature as a homage to Cassaday’s signature. I’m sure comic book fans all over the world will join me in mourning for his untimely departure. 

And thus 2024 cometh to an end. Speak, speak now, reader. If thou art not as unkind as a Vaudeville villain then, by all means, unsheathe thy tongue. Thou shall not be arrested by modestly discourse, come forth and pray tell us what is on thy mind lest you wish to incur in the wrath of the keeper of this tavern, ensconced in yonder and ethereal realms.

Cada fin de semana me tomo una pausa, me relajo y leo tantos cómics como puedo. Para mí, eso siempre es puro placer. Y claro, algunas personas pueden criticarme por la (gran) cantidad de cómics que compro durante el año. ¡Y siempre podría comprar más! Pero me esfuerzo en seleccionar los títulos que considero más prometedores y, por lo general, soy bastante bueno prediciendo su calidad.

A medida que pasan los años, se vuelve cada vez más difícil equilibrar la cantidad de cómics nuevos y viejos que compro mensualmente. En 2024 he tenido el placer de leer cómics de terror clásicos de los 70s, así como series nuevas de importantes editoriales. Mi propósito aquí es destacar las obras publicadas durante el año que encuentro especialmente inspiradoras. Ideas, conceptos, argumentos. Sin un buen escritor, las historias que leemos no tendrán ningún significado especial en nuestros corazones. En lugar de elegir un escritor, he decidido incluir a 3 en la lista: Ryan North por sus guiones conmovedores, convincentes y altamente inteligentes en “Los Cuatro Fantásticos”. James Tynion IV por su fascinante combinación de terror y ciencia ficción en “The Nice House by the Sea”. Y Mark Russell por su cautivadora crónica a través de las décadas de “Batman: la era oscura”.

El arte es lo que eleva al cómic como medio narrativo. A lo largo de las décadas, los dibujantes y entintadores han experimentado con diferentes estilos y enfoques artísticos. Pero independientemente del año o el nombre del artista, la calidad gráfica siempre ha sido el componente más importante del noveno arte. 3 artistas han sobresalido durante los últimos 12 meses, por lo que es justo recompensarlos como corresponde: Álvaro Martínez Bueno por su impresionante variedad de estilos visuales y técnicas en “The Nice House by the Sea”, Ben Stenbeck por sus elegantes diseños y composiciones dinámicas en “Our Bones Dust” y Rafa Sandoval por su vibrante y enérgica presencia en las páginas de “Absolute Superman”.

Una portada tiene que captar nuestra atención de inmediato. La misión de la portada es seducir a todos los posibles lectores. Por lo tanto, tiene que ser atractiva, tiene que eclipsar a todas las demás portadas, tiene que persuadirnos para que adquiramos ese cómic. Dibujar una portada llamativa no es tarea fácil. Por suerte, hay artistas que siguen sorprendiéndome con su producción: Álvaro Martínez Bueno por sus impresionantes portadas en “The Nice House by the Sea”, Chris Weston por su espléndida portada en “Blood Squad Seven” y Adi Granov por su solemne interpretación de “Doom”.

Algunos fans no prestan atención a los editores, pero ellos trabajan constantemente para ofrecernos los mejores cómics posibles. En este caso, el premio es para Dana Marie Andra (Fantagraphics) por crear la magnífica edición en tapa dura de The Complete Web of Horror.

Como siempre, fiel a las reglas del AAA, solo puedo elegir material publicado originalmente en el 2024. Lamento no haber comprado Fantastic Four desde que salió el primer número hace un par de años. Afortunadamente le di una oportunidad y no pude dejar de leer más de la singular versión de Ryan North sobre el cuarteto de superhéroes. “Fantastic Four” es la mejor serie en curso del año y también resulta ser el mejor título que Marvel ha publicado en bastante tiempo.

Álvaro Martínez Bueno

Ha habido muchas miniseries maravillosas (“Our Bones Dust”, “Animal Pound”, “Avengers: Twilight” y “Get Fury”) pero el premio a mejor serie limitada es para “Batman: Dark Age”. Mark Russell recrea con gran éxito la vida de Batman, haciéndolo envejecer en tiempo real y enfrentándolo a los momentos cruciales de cada década. Todo termina en 1985, con Crisis en Tierras Infinitas.

Hubo tantas series nuevas prometedoras en 2024 que me costó hacer una selección. Títulos tan impresionantes como “Absolute Batman”, “Absolute Superman”, “Blood Squad Seven”, “Plastic Man No More” y “Mystique” estaban en mi lista. Sin embargo, al final, decidí elegir “The Nice House by the Sea” como la Mejor serie nueva. James Tynion IV regresa exitosamente al complejo y misterioso universo de The Nice House on the Lake.

He dicho a menudo que Bernie Wrightson siempre ha sido uno de los artistas más grandes e influyentes de la historia. “Ars longa, vita brevis”, dice un antiguo refrán latino. El arte, en efecto, puede ser eterno aunque nuestras vidas no lo sean. En 2024 decimos adiós a varios creadores destacados: Greg Hildebrandt, famoso ilustrador que se especializó en ciencia ficción y fantasía; Ramona Fradon, cocreadora del querido personaje Metamorpho; asistí a un evento de Trina Robbins en UWM, una artista que combinó su interés por el feminismo mientras contribuía a Wonder Woman, falleció a los 86 años. El artista británico Paul Neary trabajó en 2000AD y The Ultimates de Marvel, y ganó prestigiosos premios como el Eisner y el Eagle. February comics / cómics de febrero

February was such a good month for comics. I’m amazed by the high quality of Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer, which are quickly turning into my most eagerly-awaited monthly series. Millar is still firing on all cylinders with Huck and especially the second volume of Jupiter’s Circle. And Image has a couple of promising new series: Snowfall and Cry Havoc. However, once again my favorite comic of the month, and by quite a large margin, is Alan Moore’s Providence # 7. Can’t wait to start reviewing this series. And now without further ado here are February comics as per solicitations:

The beginning of 2016 comes with plenty of comics, just the way I like it. The first issue of Silver Surfer was very good, and I really enjoyed the conclusion of Nameless (I’ll be reviewing the series in April); Doctor Strange and Jupiter’s Circle keep getting better and better. El 2016 empieza lleno de cómics, tal como a mí me gusta. El primer número de “Silver Surfer” fue muy bueno, y realmente disfruté la conclusión de “Nameless” (estaré reseñando esta serie en abril); “Doctor Strange” y “Jupiter’s Circle” siguen mejorando. Debo decir que mi cómic favorito del mes fue Providence # 6 de Alan Moore. Y ahora sin mayores preámbulos aquí están los cómics de enero:

ALL NEW ALL DIFFERENT AVENGERS #3
El Guerrero hace honor a su nombre, y para los Vengadores será difícil alcanzar la victoria a menos que logren hacer a un lado sus diferencias. 

BLACK MAGICK #1
La detective Black trabaja en robos y homicidios, pero su mayor misterio es la verdad sobre sí misma... ¿quién es ella? Sin embargo, hay otros con muy buena memoria, y aquello que alguien tiene será codiciado por los demás.

DC ESSENTIALS DC THE NEW FRONTIER #1
