America’s Got Powers # 7 - Jonathan Ross & Bryan Hitch

The struggle for power finally gets to an end. In the conclusion of this miniseries, the creative team provides at last an answer to most of our questions. What happens when Tommy decides that it’s about time to stop giving power to others?

As we had seen in previous issues, everyone wants power. Politicians, the director of the America’s Got Powers show, the ambitious woman that many readers considered a parody of a well-known figure, etc. And the final showdown was so big that it could not be contained in the sixth issue of the miniseries, hence the need to produce one additional issue that wasn’t originally in the plans…

In the end, Tommy manages to absorb everyone’s energies and abilities, and steals all that power for himself. It’s thanks to his decisive intervention that San Francisco survives a nuclear attack. And once everyone has been saved, Tommy sends all that power to space, to an unknown corner of the galaxy where it originated.

Now Earth is once again a normal planet inhabited by normal people. With a new face and a new identity, Tommy and his girlfriend travel across America, having fun at all the news broadcasts in which Tommy is considered the world’s most dangerous teenager.

Faithful to the visual patterns established since the first chapter, Bryan Hitch focuses his efforts in a group of wonderful double page spreads. In one case we can see the director of the America’s Got Powers show floating above a crowd of excited people, and in the next one we have Tommy saving San Francisco from a nuclear detonation. Finally, we get to see Tommy shining and blinding everyone who dares to take a look at him. He has the power to obliterate those who attacked him, but he simply decides to get rid of all powers forever.

America’s got powers? Not anymore. Nevertheless, in the final page, Jonathan Ross suggests that there might be a sequel in the works.

La lucha por el poder finalmente llega a su fin. En el último número de la miniserie, el equipo creativo por fin responde nuestras preguntas. ¿Qué pasa cuando Tommy decide que es hora de dejar de darles poderes a los demás?

Como habíamos visto en números anteriores, todos quieren poder. Los políticos, el director del show America’s Got Powers, la ambiciosa mujer que muchos lectores consideraron una parodia de una figura bien conocida, etc. Y la batalla final era tan grande que no podía ser contenida en el sexto número de la miniserie, de ahí la necesidad de producir un número adicional que no estaba originalmente en los planes...

Tommy finalmente se las arregla para absorber las energías y habilidades de todos, y se roba todo ese poder. Es gracias a su decisiva intervención que San Francisco sobrevive un ataque nuclear. Y una vez que todos han sido salvados, Tommy envía todo ese poder al espacio, al rincón desconocido de la galaxia en el que se había originado.

Ahora la Tierra es una vez más un planeta normal habitado por gente normal. Con un nuevo rostro y una nueva identidad, Tommy y su enamorada viajan por Estados Unidos, divirtiéndose con los noticieros en los que Tommy es considerado el adolescente más peligroso del mundo.

Fiel a los patrones visuales establecidos desde el primer capítulo, Bryan Hitch enfoca sus esfuerzos en un grupo de maravillosas páginas dobles. En un caso podemos ver al director del show America’s Got Powers flotando sobre una multitud de gente emocionada, y en el siguiente tenemos a Tommy salvando San Francisco de una detonación nuclear. Finalmente, vemos a Tommy brillando y cegando a todos los que se atreven a mirarlo. Tiene el poder para aniquilar a quienes lo atacaron, pero él simplemente decide deshacerse de todos los poderes para siempre. 

¿Estados Unidos tiene poderes? Ahora no. Sin embargo, en la página final, Jonathan Ross sugiere que podría haber una secuela en ciernes.

KICK-ASS 2 - Mark Millar & Romita Jr.

If Kick-Ass has his superhero team, then the Mother Fucker must have his own super-villain group: the Mega Toxic Cunts! Perhaps the most notable member is Mother Russia, a dangerous and very lethal woman. Together, they attack the secret base of Justice Forever, and they kill Colonel Stripes and smash the whole place.

Of course, the Mother Fucker doesn’t stop there. His next incursion is a wild explosion of violence. He shoots children in the streets of a peaceful suburb and orders his men to indiscriminately kill as many people as they can, with one goal in mind: breaking and entering into Katie Deuxma’s house. There, he rapes her and asks his men to rape her as well. Having a girl getting ‘gang banged’ was certainly controversial; and surely many readers complained about the level of viciousness. But I consider it a necessary development. Because that’s how we can attest, without a shadow of a doubt, that the Mother Fucker is the coldest and nastiest adversary ever (in the movie “Kick-Ass 2”, the rape scene is replaced by a clever solution. Obviously, unless you are Michael Haneke or Lars Von Trier you can’t get away with something like that, and even if you do, the distributors and the audience might feel uncomfortable).

However, there is an increase in hostilities. The Mother Fucker has raped Katie because he knows that by doing that he’s hurting Kick-Ass. As Machiavellian as it sounds, he intends to slaughter first the people Dave loves the most and then to kill Dave. After the massacre in the suburbs, the chief of police decides to arrest every person wearing a mask or a cape, and thus just as quickly as it begun, Justice (not so) Forever gets disbanded. When the police officers arrive to Lizewski’s address, Dave’s father decides to give a false confession, and thus the officers believe they’re arresting the real Kick-Ass.

Dave Lizewski feels awfully guilty about this, but nothing prepares him for what comes next. Following the Mother Fucker’s orders, two criminals kill Dave’s father in jail. This was definitely one of the most shocking moments of the series, and it’s hard for me to forget how I felt when I first read it. Millar did such an amazing work with Kick-Ass that every character mattered. As a reader, you always felt that they were important, special, in a strange way almost as irreplaceable as real people. That’s one of the highest accomplishments of any work of literature: to make us care about fictional people as much as we care for the men or women sitting next to us.

In the funeral, Mindy –AKA Hit-Girl– finally appears. She has been absent for months, rebuilding her life, trying to have the one thing she could never experience before: a normal childhood. But things are not meant to be nice and easy for Hit-Girl (after all, in the final pages of this volume she’ll be arrested, something that is omitted in the Kick-Ass movie sequel).  

And then comes the savage confrontation: Mother Fucker versus Kick-Ass, Mother Russia versus Hit-Girl, and the Toxic Mega Cunts versus Justice Forever. Millar has always exceled in the game of violence, he knows just how much blood to pour, how many dismemberments to show and what gruesome deaths are the most spectacular ones. Other writers might try to be violent, but without any substance to support that violence the narrative becomes a hollow artifice. Fortunately, Millar never forgets the story, and he finds the most astounding ways to combine violent sequences with dramatic moments.

The battle in Times Square is impressive, but of course nothing can be compared to the titanic clash between Hit-Girl and Mother Russia. Nevertheless, Millar reminds us that real violence has real consequences. Dave Lizewski learnt that in the first issue, when he spent months in a hospital recovering from his injuries. Now, when Kick-Ass fights against the Mother Fucker, something unexpected happens. After getting punched in the face, the villain falls off a building. This is a very singular moment and one that expresses the originality of this series. There is hate in the fists of Kick-Ass, after all, his nemesis has raped the girl he adores and murdered his father. He has genuine reasons for wanting to kill the guy responsible for all this. And yet, when he accidentally pushes the Mother Fucker off the building, he feels sick.

And after the brutal fall, in a moment of weird tenderness, Chris Genovese, the boy formerly known as Red Mist, asks Dave for help. He has survived the fall, his arms and legs are broken, he’s bleeding profusely, he looks like he will only survive for a few minutes. And he asks Dave for help, he begs Dave to call an ambulance. And how can Dave say no to him? He immediately reaches for his cell phone and dials 911. There is a strange relationship between the hero and the villain, they were the best of friends when they first met, they always shared their passion for comic books even when they chose different paths in life, and now, when they have hurt each other beyond measure, when they have reached that point of agony that goes beyond all forms of pain, they still help each other. Chris promises not to accuse Dave of trying to kill him, and Dave promises him that he’ll survive. I really don’t know how to explain the significance of this moment. Because, against all odds, they both keep their promises. And together they forge an inexorable link, something as irrational as the passion we comic book lovers feel for this art.

Hit-Girl versus Mother Russia

Si Kick-Ass tiene un equipo de superhéroes, entonces Mother Fucker debe tener su propio grupo de súper-villanos: ¡los Bastardos Mega Tóxicos! Tal vez la integrante más notable es Mother Russia, una mujer peligrosa y letal. Juntos, atacan la base secreta de Justicia Eterna, y matan a Colonel Stripes y destrozan todo el lugar.

Por supuesto, Mother Fucker no se detiene allí. Su próxima incursión es una explosión salvaje de violencia. Le dispara a niños en las calles de un pacífico suburbio y ordena a sus hombres que maten indiscriminadamente a toda la gente que puedan, con una sola meta: irrumpir en el hogar de Katie Deuxma. Allí, la viola y le pide a sus hombres que también la violen. Esta 'violación en masa' ciertamente fue controversial; y seguramente muchos lectores se quejaron por el nivel de bestialidad. Pero considero que era un desarrollo necesario. Porque de ese modo podemos comprobar, sin duda alguna, que Mother Fucker es un adversario cruel y vengativo (en la película “Kick-Ass 2”, la escena de la violación es reemplazada con una ingeniosa solución. Obviamente, a menos que seas Michael Haneke o Lars Von Trier no puedes salirte con la tuya, e incluso si lo logras, los distribuidores y la audiencia podrían sentirse incómodos).

Dave Lizewski & Chris Genovese

Sin embargo, hay un incremento en las hostilidades. Mother Fucker ha violado a  Katie porque sabe que al hacerlo le está haciendo daño a Kick-Ass. Por maquiavélico que suene, él intenta matar primero a las personas que más quiere Dave y luego matar a Dave. Después de la masacre en los suburbios, el jefe de la policía decide arrestar a todas las personas que lleven una máscara o una capa, y así tan rápido como empezó, Justician (no tan) Eterna es desarticulada. Cuando los policías llegan a la dirección de Lizewski, el padre de Dave decide dar una falsa confesión, y así los oficiales creen que están arrestando al verdadero Kick-Ass.

Dave Lizewski se siente terriblemente culpable, pero nada lo prepara para lo que pasa después. Siguiendo las órdenes de Mother Fucker, dos criminales matan al padre de Dave en la cárcel. Definitivamente este fue uno de los momentos que más me impactó, y es difícil olvidar lo que sentí. Millar hizo un trabajo asombroso con Kick-Ass, todos estos personajes tenían valor. Como lector, uno sentía que eran importantes, especiales, y de alguna extraña manera, casi tan irreemplazables como personas reales. Ese es uno de los mayores logros de una obra de literatura: hacernos querer a gente ficticia tanto como queremos a los hombres o mujeres que se sientan a nuestro alrededor.

En el funeral, Mindy –Hit-Girl– finalmente aparece. Ella había estado ausente por meses, reconstruyendo su vida, intentando tener lo que nunca había experimentado antes: una niñez normal. Pero las cosas no serán agradables ni fáciles para Hit-Girl (después de todo, en las páginas finales de este volumen será arrestada, algo que es omitido en la secuela fílmica de Kick-Ass).

Y luego viene la brutal confrontación: Mother Fucker versus Kick-Ass, Mother Russia versus Hit-Girl, y los Bastardos Mega Tóxicos versus Justicia Eterna. Millar siempre se ha destacado en el juego de la violencia, sabe cuánta sangre debe ser vertida, cuantos destripamientos deben mostrarse y cuáles son las formas de muerte más espectaculares. Otros escritores pueden tratar de ser violentos, pero sin una sustancia que ofrezca soporte a esa violencia, la narrativa se vuelve un artificio vacío. Afortunadamente, Millar nunca olvida la historia, y encuentra las maneras más asombrosas de combinar secuencias violentas con momentos dramáticos.

La batalla en Times Square es impresionante, pero por supuesto nada puede compararse al choque titánico entre Hit-Girl y Mother Russia. No obstante, Millar nos recuerda que la violencia real tiene consecuencias. Dave Lizewski lo aprendió en el primer número, cuando pasó meses en un hospital recuperándose de sus heridas. Ahora, cuando Kick-Ass pelea contra Mother Fucker, algo inesperado sucede. Luego de recibir un puñetazo en la cara, el villano se cae de un edificio. Este es un momento muy singular, que expresa la originalidad de esta serie. Hay odio en los puños de Kick-Ass, después de todo, su némesis ha violado a la chica que adora y ha asesinado a su padre. Él tiene razones genuinas para querer matar al sujeto responsable por todo esto. Y sin embargo, cuando empuja accidentalmente a Mother Fucker en el edificio, se siente asqueado.

Y después de la brutal caída, en un momento de extraña ternura, Chris Genovese, el chico antes conocido como Red Mist, le pide ayuda a Dave. Ha sobrevivido a la caída, sus brazos y piernas están fracturados, está sangrando profusamente, parece que sólo sobrevivirá por unos pocos minutos. Y le pide ayuda a Dave, le ruega que llame a una ambulancia. ¿Y cómo podría Dave decirle que no? De inmediato marca el 911. Existe una extraña relación entre el héroe y el villano, cuando recién se conocieron fueron grandes amigos, siempre compartieron su pasión por los cómics incluso cuando eligieron diferentes caminos en la vida, y ahora, cuando se han hecho daño más allá de toda medida, cuando han alcanzado ese punto de agonía que sobrepasa todas las formas del dolor, aun así se ayudan el uno al otro. Chris le promete a Dave no acusarlo por intento de homicidio, y Dave le promete que sobrevivirá. Realmente no sé cómo explicar lo significativo que es este momento. Porque, contra viento y marea, ambos cumples sus promesas. Y juntos forjan un vínculo inexorable, algo tan irracional como la pasión que todos los amantes del cómic sentimos por este arte.

Witch Doctor Mal Practice # 6 - Brandon Seifert & Lukas Ketner

I knew we wouldn’t get the typical outcome in this, the final issue of Mal Practice. And I was right. Brandon Seifert keeps exploring the elements that make of Witch Doctor a unique character and an innovative comic book. The large doses of black humor, the constant ironies, the unexpected plot twists, the medicine background firmly inserted into the world of the fantastic, all of these elements seem to shine here even brighter than in the previous chapter. 

We probably had imagined that Penny Dreadful would break free from her imprisonment, but taking a look at her tortured face shows us that this time she’s not taking any prisoners (well, she never does, but still…). Lukas Ketner gives us a very shocking page divided in three panels, the first one shows us how Penny Dreadful tears her own arm apart, dropping it to the floor. Even with only one arm, she still manages to destroy and devour the malignant harpy that had captured her.

Gast, on the other hand, deals with his opponent creatively. Instead of a direct confron-tation he replicates Doctor Vincent Morrow’s spell and summons the Surgeons, these powerful and inhumane creatures that get rid of everything they consider a ‘disease’.

Meanwhile, Witch Doctor faces his nemesis who plans to pour a potent magical potion into the water reservoir of the city. After being beaten down, the doctor realizes that he doesn’t have the time to create a specific spell to neutralize the potion but he can do one thing about it: piss on it (literally). Like I said, I knew I’d be surprised by the final pages of the miniseries but I didn’t think I’d be so amused by the urination tactics of the protagonist.

Sabía que el desenlace no sería típico en este número final de Mal Practice. Y tenía razón. Brandon Seifert continúa explorando los elementos que hacen de Witch Doctor un personaje único y un cómic innovador. Las tremendas dosis de humor negro, las constantes ironías, los giros argumentales inesperados, el trasfondo médico firmemente insertado en el mundo de lo fantástico, todos estos elementos parecen brillar aquí incluso más que en el capítulo anterior.

The arrival of the Surgeon / la llegada del Cirujano

Is urine powerful enough? / ¿Tiene la orina suficiente poder?

Probablemente habíamos imaginado que Penny Dreadful se liberaría de su prisión, pero al dar un vistazo a su rostro torturado nos muestra que esta vez no dejará a nadie con vida (bueno, nunca lo hace, pero aun así...). Lukas Ketner nos entrega una página impactante dividida en tres viñetas, la primera nos muestra cómo Penny Dreadful se arranca su propio brazo, arrojándolo al suelo. Incluso con un sólo brazo, se las arregla para destruir y devorar a la maligna harpía que la había capturado.

Gast, por otro lado, se enfrenta a su oponente de manera creativa. En vez de una confrontación directa replica el hechizo del Doctor Vincent Morrow e invoca a los Cirujanos, estas poderosas e inhumanas criaturas que eliminan todo lo que consideran una ‘enferme-dad’.

Mientras tanto, Witch Doctor lucha contra su némesis, quien planea derramar una potente poción mágica en las reservas de agua de la ciudad. Después de ser golpeado, el doctor se da cuenta que no tiene tiempo para creer un hechizo específico que neutralice la poción, pero puede hacer algo más: mear (literalmente). Como dije, sabía que sería sorprendido en las páginas finales de la miniserie, pero no creí que me divertiría tanto con las técnicas urinarias del protagonista.

Witch Doctor Mal Practice # 5 - Brandon Seifert & Lukas Ketner

Witch Doctor is forced to fight against a microscopic dragon that is already starting to destroy his lungs; using every spell at his disposal, the doctor is finally able to defeat this uncanny threat. Now, however, he can’t take a few days to rest. In fact, he must attack his opponents with the help of Gast and the mysterious woman who infected him on the first chapter of this miniseries.

Together, this motley crew are able to track down the whereabouts of Penny Dreadful, who is been held captive by the doctor’s nemesis. Using the same syringe that we saw for the first time in the cover of Witch Doctor # 0 (published in the Walking Dead # 85 in 2011), Doctor Vincent Morrow finally catches his enemy off guard, but will this surprise attack be enough?

Lukas Ketner has some truly amazing pages here. First of all, there’s a recap page that defies any conventio-nalism: we get to see an illustration that seems to come out from the pages of a forgotten book of medicine / anatomy that reveals the nature of the Strigoi, and then instead of the classic square panels we have a series of circles that almost roll out of the page in which we witness the ordeals of Doctor Vincent Morrow. 

The battle between Witch Doctor and his lung-dragon is also fantastic, as it is the scene of the confrontation between Gast and the Strigoi that infected the Doctor. Finally, the fight between the protagonists and the antagonists is quite memorable. There’s only one issue left before the end, and I’m sure it’ll be greater than I expect.

Witch Doctor se ve forzado a pelear contra un dragón microscopico que ya está empezando a destruir sus pulmones; usando todos los hechizos a su disposición, el doctor es finalmente capaz de derrotar a esta siniestra amenaza. Ahora, sin embargo, no puede tomarse un par de días para descansar. De hecho, debe atacar a sus oponentes con la ayuda de Gast y la misteriosa mujer que lo infectó en el primer capítulo de esta miniserie. 

Juntos, este extraño grupo es capaz de rastrear el paradero de Penny Dreadful, quien sigue capturada a manos del némesis del doctor. Usando la misma jeringa que vimos por primera vez en la portada de Witch Doctor # 0 (publicado en "The Walking Dead" # 85, el 2011), el doctor Vincent Morrow finalmente agarra a su enemigo con la guardia baja, pero ¿será suficiente este ataque sorpresa?

Lukas Ketner tiene algunas páginas realmente asombrosas. En primer lugar, la página de recuento desafía todos los conven-cionalismos: vemos una ilustración que parece salir de las páginas de algún olvidado libro de medicina / anatomía que revela la naturaleza del Strigoi, y luego en vez de las clásicas viñetas rectangulares tenemos una serie de círculos que casi ruedan por la página en la que observamos los padecimientos del doctor Vincent Morrow. 

La batalla entre Witch Doctor y su dragón de pulmón es también fantástica, al igual que la escena de confrontación entre Gast y el Strigoi que infectó al doctor. Finalmente, la pelea entre los protagonistas y los antagonistas es bastante memorable. Sólo queda un número antes del final, y estoy seguro que será mejor de lo que imagino.

Uncanny Avengers # 2 - Rick Remender & John Cassaday

Charles Xavier, the founding father of the X-Men has been slain at the hands of his most beloved pupil, Cyclops (Scott Summers). Now it’s time for Havoc (Alex Summers) to assume leadership of a group comprised of mutants and humans. 

After the disastrous events that took place in the previous issue, a new anti-mutant agenda starts spreading in every major TV network in the US. The Red Skull is behind all of this, but besides inciting hatred and bigotry, he has also desecrated the corpse of Professor X. By removing Xavier’s brain he’s now in control of the world’s most powerful weapon. And he’s already using those enormous telepathic talents to brainwash Scarlet Witch.

Both Rogue and Scarlet Witch were captured, but the Southern mutant manages to escape, in part thanks to her mutant powers which allow her to absorb other people’s abilities and memories, and also in part thanks to “Remy LeBeau and all those kinky bondage drinking games” (who said sexual experimentation wouldn’t come in handy for superheroines?).

The most shocking moment, however, takes place right after Rogue has escaped and has found Wanda Maximoff. Together, the two women witness a horrifying spectacle: the body of Charles Xavier, which has been mutilated: his skull has been opened, and his brain has been removed. 

X-Men & Avengers

John Cassaday has some truly memorable pages here. For instance, in the partial double page spread, the superior half is a wide panel that shows the Avengers and the X-Men rescuing the victims after Avalanche’s attack. We can see Spider-Man, Falcon, Logan, Havoc, Captain America, Thor, Captain Marvel, Iron Man and Daredevil. I’ve also enjoyed the design of the Red Skull’s secret headquarters, and the initial confrontation between Scarlet Witch and the villain. When Cassaday shows the body of Xavier he also includes a flashback that recounts Rogue’s first experiences with the X-Men. Laura Martin, one of the best colorists of the industry, gives us cold and pale tones in the first frames (Xavier’s corpse) and warm and soothing tones in the last frames (Rogue’s memory of Xavier’s altruism).

Charles Xavier, el padre fundador de los X-Men ha sido asesinado a manos de su bienhadado pupilo, Cyclops (Scott Summers). Ahora le toca a Havoc (Alex Summers) asumir el liderazgo de un grupo compuesto por mutantes y humanos.

Después de los desastrosos eventos que sucedieron en el capítulo anterior, una nueva agenda anti-mutante empieza a extenderse en las grandes cadenas de televisión en USA. Red Skull está detrás de todo esto, pero además de incitar el odio y el racismo, también ha corrompido el cuerpo del Profesor X. Al extirpar el cerebro de Xavier, ahora controla el arma más poderosa del mundo. Y ya está usando estos enormes talentos telepáticos para lavarle el cerebro a Scarlet Witch.

Tanto Rogue como Scarlet Witch fueron capturadas, pero la mutante sureña logra escapar, en parte gracias a sus poderes mutantes que le permiten absorber las habilidades y memorias de otras personas, y también en parte gracias a “Remy LeBeau y todos esos mañosos juegos de bondage y de beber” (¿quién dijo que la experimentación sexual no sería útil para las súper-heroínas?).

Red Skull and his minions / Cráneo Rojo y sus secuaces

El momento más impactante, sin embargo, sucede justo después que Rogue ha escapado y ha encontrado a Wanda Maximoff. Juntas, las dos mujeres atestiguan un horrendo espectáculo: el cuerpo de Charles Xavier, que ha sido mutilado: su cráneo está abierto, y su cerebro ha sido extirpado.

John Cassaday tiene algunas páginas realmente memorables. Por ejemplo, en la página doble parcial, la mitad superior es un panel ancho que muestra a los Vengadores y a los X-Men rescatando a las víctimas después el ataque de Avalancha. Podemos ver a Spider-Man,  Falcon, Logan, Havoc, Captain America, Thor, Captain Marvel, Iron Man y Daredevil. También he disfrutado con el diseño de los cuarteles secretos de Red Skull, y la confrontación inicial entre Scarlet Witch y el villano. Cuando Cassaday muestra el cuerpo de Xavier también incluye un flashback que recuenta las primeras experiencias de Rogue con los X-Men. Laura Martin, una de las mejores coloristas de la industria, nos da tonos fríos y pálidos en las primeras viñetas (el cadáver de Xavier) y tonos cálidos y apacibles en las últimas (allí Rogue recuerda el altruismo de Xavier).

Hit-Girl # 4 - Mark Millar

Even without Kick-Ass’s help, Hit-Girl continues to wreak havoc in the underworld. She has targeted the mafia, and she’s relentless. Mr. Genovese, the big boss, loses millions of dollars as his clandestine transactions are routinely intercepted by a 12-year-old girl more lethal than anyone else in the world.

Meanwhile, after torturing the most popular girl in school, Mindy is finally welcomed by all girls. Suddenly, they all want to sit next to her during lunch and Mindy is the one that gets to decide who deserves the privilege of her company. Dave Lizewski is still recovering after breaking his arm, and that’s when he gets a mysterious message sent by his nemesis, Red Mist. 

Red Mist tells him that he has been training in Asia with the best martial arts experts that money can buy (or hire), and he compares himself to Bruce Wayne before turning into Batman; he warns Dave about his fighting abilities that have now increased beyond all measure. However, what Red Mist doesn’t know is that his masters are only interested in the thousands of dollars he has been paying them, and instead of teaching him Kung Fu secrets they simply make him do weird exercises that look cool but that have no real purpose. This is an important subplot, as Red Mist’s fighting abilities will be tested on his final confrontation with Kick-Ass in the second volume of the series. 

There are some really funny references to pop culture, movies (such as “Batman Begins”) and even comics, as Red Mist tells Dave to enjoy DC’s relaunch in the little time he has left (ironically, this relaunch is no longer bringing joy to DC, as their sales continue to decline, but I doubt Millar has used these line to make fun of the Distinguished Competition).

Another subplot that will have greater repercussions in the second volume is the fact that Mindy’s stepfather finds out she has been killing dozens of mobsters in recent weeks, and forbids her to continue acting as Hit-Girl. Now Mindy will have to do everything she can to escape from home if she wants to keep fighting against crime, but clearly her stepfather is smart enough to keep an eye on her, after all, he is a cop.

Incluso sin la ayuda de Kick-Ass, Hit-Girl continúa agrediendo al bajo mundo. Su blanco es la mafia, y ella es implacable. Mr. Genovese, el gran jefe, pierde millones de dólares cuando sus transacciones son interceptadas rutinariamente por una niña de 12 años realmente letal.

Mientras tanto, después de torturar a la chica más popular del colegio, Mindy por fin es bien recibida por todas las chicas. De pronto, todas ellas quieren sentarse a su lado a la hora del almuerzo, y es Mindy la que debe decidir quiénes merecen el privilegio de su compañía. Dave Lizewski aún se está recuperando después de romperse el brazo, y ahí es cuando recibe un misterioso mensaje enviado por su némesis Red Mist. 

Red Mist le dice que ha estado entrenando en Asia con los mejores expertos en artes marciales que el dinero puede comprar (o alquilar), y se compara a sí mismo con Bruce Wayne antes de convertirse en Batman; advierte a Dave sobre sus habilidades de lucha que ahora se han incrementado. Sin embargo, lo que Red Mist no sabe es que sus maestros sólo están interesados en los miles de dólares que él está pagando, y en vez de enseñarles los secretos del Kung Fu lo fuerzan a hacer raros ejercicios que se ven alucinantes pero que en realidad no tienen ningún propósito. Este es un sub-argumento importante ya que las habilidades de pelea de Red Mist serán puestas a prueba en la confrontación final con Kick-Ass en el segundo volumen de la serie. 

Hay algunas referencias muy divertidas sobre la cultura pop, películas (como “Batman Begins”) e incluso cómics, cuando Red Mist le dice a Dave que disfrute el relanzamiento de DC mientras pueda (irónicamente, este relanzamiento ya no resulta un disfrute para DC, y es que sus ventas continúan cayendo, pero dudo que Millar haya usado esta frase para burlarse de la Distinguida Competencia).

Otro sub-argumento que tendrá mayores repercusiones en el segundo volumen es el hecho que el padrastro de Mindy descubre que ella ha estado matando a docenas de mafiosos en las últimas semanas, y le prohíbe continuar actuando como Hit-Girl, Ahora Mindy tendrá que hacer todo lo que pueda para escapar de casa si es que quiere seguir luchando contra el crimen, pero su padrastro sabe que debe vigilarla, después de todo, él es un policía.

The Secret Service # 4 - Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons

Gary is good with guns, lethal in hand-to-hand combat and a fast driver. Nevertheless, he lacks the proper elegance and distinguished demeanor of a James Bond. In order to become a spy for the British Crown, he must reinvent himself under the guidance of his uncle Jack. 

Many things happen in this fourth installment of Millar’s Secret Service. First of all, we see Jack teaching his nephew how to dress like a gentleman. Then, he forces Gary to pass one final test after administering him a somniferous substance. The teenager, then, wakes up in Colombia, undressed, with no money and no weapons. It is under these conditions that he must reach a certain address in which he’ll find a plane ticket to return to England.

Gary is quickly intercepted by a police officer, who plans to arrest him under charges of indecent exposure. He even accuses the youngster of being involved in gay activities. Surely, this could be construed as a funny scene about an aggressive macho cop and a disoriented young man. Nevertheless, I think the partial male nudity observed by the police officer is enough to elicit in him the fear of the otherness, the fear of homosexuality. For the man of the law, homosexuality in expressed in a personality, a life style, but also a morphology that entails an indiscreet anatomy (in this case Gary’s state of undress). 

Without knowledge of the language, Gary must do everything he can to avoid being arrested and to locate the required house. When he gets there he realizes that this house is owned by one of Colombia’s most sought-after drug lords, with a small army at his disposal. Gary must either kill them all or die trying. As in the previous issues, Dave Gibbons does an amazing work. The action scenes, the exotic locations and the behavior of the characters are enhanced by the stylistic choices of one of Britain’s most respected and awarded artists. There are still plenty of mysteries to be resolved before this miniseries concludes, and I’m impatient to hold in my hands the next issue.

Gary es bueno con las armas, letal en combate mano a mano y un veloz conductor. No obstante, carece de la elegancia y la actitud distinguida de un James Bond. Para convertirse en un espía de la corona británica, él debe reinventarse a sí mismo bajo la tutela de su tío Jack.

Suceden muchas cosas en este cuarto capítulo de "Secret Service" de Millar. En primer lugar, vemos a Jack enseñándole a su sobrino cómo vestirse como un caballero. Luego, obliga a Gary a pasar un último test luego de administrarle una sustancia somnífera. El adolecente, entonces, despierta en Colombia, desvestido, sin dinero y sin armas. Es bajo estas condiciones que debe llegar a un lugar en el que encontrará un boleto de avión para regresar a Inglaterra.

Gary es rápidamente interceptado por un oficial de la policía, quien planea arrestarlo bajo cargos de exposición indecente. Incluso acusa al jovencito de estar involucrado en actividades gay. Seguramente, esto podría ser visto como una escena chistosa sobre un policía machista y agresivo y un joven desorientado. No obstante, creo que la desnudez parcial masculina observada por el policía es suficiente para provocar en él un miedo hacia la otredad, un miedo hacia la homosexualidad. Para el hombre de la ley, la homosexualidad es expresada en una personalidad, en un estilo de vida, pero también en una morfología que implica una anatomía indiscreta (en el caso de Gary sería estar medio desvestido).

Sin conocer el idioma, Gary debe hacer todo lo que puede para evitar ser arrestado y localizar la casa a la que debe llegar. Cuando llega allí, se da cuenta que la residencia es propiedad de uno de los más buscados señores de la droga de Colombia, con un pequeño ejército a su disposición. Gary debe matarlos a todos o morir intentándolo. Al igual que en números anteriores, Dave Gibbons hace un asombroso trabajo. Las escenas de acción, las locaciones exóticas y el comportamiento de los personajes son aumentados por las opciones estilísticas de uno de los más respetados y premiados artistas británicos. Aún hay muchos misterios por resolver antes de la conclusión de la miniserie, y estoy impaciente por ver qué pasará.

Mind the Gap # 1 - Jim McCann & Rodin Esquejo

Elle Peterssen, a normal girl, is attacked at the subway station. She has no enemies and yet a lot of people seemed to be after her. Now that she is in a comma, her friends and relatives try to get some answers. What is the mystery behind her attackers? And why on Earth does she have more brain activity than any normal human being (comatose condition not withstanding)?

I must admit I had never read anything from Jim McCann before, although I had interacted with him a few times on the Bendis board. When I saw he was launching his new creator-owned project I became interested. Perhaps I felt like I owed him a chance after talking online with him. But there is something else that seduced me about this project: Rodin Esquejo. If I would have to choose my favorite new cover artist from the past couple of years it would be Esquejo. I remember one of the main reasons that made me buy the first issue of Morning Glories was his amazing cover. And now I had the chance to see him doing interior art, of course I wasn’t going to miss that!

And I’m glad I preordered the first issue of Mind the Gap. Jim has written a pulse pounding thriller, with emotion, action, drama and some humorous moments; not only that, he manages to flesh out the main characters of the series while including a bunch of eater eggs that detail-loving fans such as myself will be grateful for.

There is something else that I really enjoyed about this opening chapter. Elle is an in-between place, she’s neither death nor fully alive. She is in a comma but she is also conscious on a strange and ethereal limbo. I consider this an interesting approach to Jacques Lacan's concept of symbolic death. I’ll try to explain it in simple words: There is an impasse between symbolic death and actual (real) death. Because death is not only the absence of life, it’s so much more than that, especially to us. The need for a symbolic death becomes patently necessary for people. Lacan defined the symbolic death as a narrative of closure, as the final sentence one must utter in order to let go of the dead ones. If every culture in the planet respects some sort of funerary rites it is precisely because of that. The real death comes naturally when a heart stops beating, but the symbolic death is something cultural, something that depends on any given individual and the ability to cope with loss. Coming to terms with death means to be able to write that epitaph in our head, to be able to understand someone else's life and then to let go of it.

So I consider that Elle is an especially courageous girl, as she hears others talking about her as if she were dead and still refuses to believe that this is the end. Can her consciousness return to her body? Nobody knows, but there’s one thing that worries her, if the people that tried to kill her failed, then it won’t be long before they come after her. Once again, Image is giving us a very promising new series with absolutely fantastic art by Rodin Esquejo and vibrant colors by Sonia Oback. And we should also admire the gorgeous logo design by Michael Lapinski (not only one of my friends from the Bendis board but also an author that has contributed to The Gathering just I have more than a few times). Mind the Gap is definitely worth checking out. I highly recommend it.

Elle Peterssen, una chica normal, es atacada en la estación del metro. No tiene enemigos y sin embargo mucha gente la persigue. Ahora que está en coma, sus amigos y familiares intentan encontrar algunas respuestas. ¿Cuál es el misterio detrás de sus atacantes? ¿Y por qué, a pesar de estar en coma, su cerebro registra una actividad por encima de cualquier escala?

Debo admitir que nunca había leído algo de Jim McCann antes, aunque había interactuado con él varias veces en la página de Bendis. Cuando vi que anunciaba su nuevo proyecto personal, me interesé. Tal vez sentí que le debía una oportunidad después de hablar con él vía internet.  Pero hay algo más que me sedujo sobre este proyecto: Rodin Esquejo. Si tuviera que elegir a mi nuevo portadista favorito de los últimos dos años sería Esquejo. Recuerdo que una de las principales razones que me llevaron a comprar el primer ejemplar de Morning Glories fue su asombrosa portada. Y ahora que tenía la oportunidad de verlo dibujando absolutamente todo, sabía que no podía pasar esto por alto.

Y me alegra haber comprado el primer número de "Mind the Gap" por adelantado. Jim ha escrito un thriller intenso, con emoción, acción, drama y algunos momentos humorísticos; no sólo eso, se las ha arreglado para darle forma a los personajes principales y también ha incluido algunas pistas ocultas que los fans atentos al detalle sabrán apreciar.

Hay algo más que disfruté de este capítulo inicial. Elle está en el 'entre dos mundos', no está muerta ni viva del todo. Está en coma pero también está consciente en un extraño y etéreo limbo. Considero que este es un interesante enfoque al concepto de muerte simbólica de Jacques Lacan. De manera resumida, hay un impasse entre la muerte simbólica y la muerte de hecho (real). Porque la muerte no es sólo la ausencia de vida, es mucho más que eso, especialmente para nosotros. La necesidad de una muerte simbólica es necesaria para la gente. Lacan definía la muerte simbólica como una narrativa de cierre, como la sentencia final que uno debe murmurar para dejar ir a los muertos. Si cada cultura en el planeta respeta algún tipo de rito funerario es precisamente por eso. La muerte real llega naturalmente cuando el corazón deja de latir, pero la muerte simbólica es algo cultural, algo que depende del individuo y de su capacidad para lidiar con la pérdida. Aceptar la muerte significa ser capaces de escribir ese epitafio en nuestras cabezas, ser capaces de entender la vida de alguien y asumir su final.

Así que considero que Elle es una chica especialmente valiente porque aunque escucha a otros hablar sobre ella como si estuviera muerta, se rehúsa a creer que este es el fin. ¿Puede su consciencia regresar a su cuerpo? Nadie lo sabe, sólo hay una certeza... si la gente que intentó matarla ha fallado, entonces no tardarán mucho en encontrarla una segunda vez. Nuevamente, Image nos presenta una prometedora serie con el arte absolutamente grandioso de Rodin Esquejo y vibrantes colores Sonia Oback. Y también deberíamos admirar el fantástico logo diseñado por Michael Lapinski (que además de ser mi amigo en la página de Bendis también ha colaborado, al igual que yo, en The Gathering en varias ocasiones). "Mind the Gap" es realmente recomendable.

The Strange Talent of Luther Strode # 6 - Jordan, Moore & Sobreiro

Comic books have been a part of my life since I learned how to read. There comes a moment in life, though, when collecting comic books is just not enough, and you want to create your own. Sometimes writing or drawing, or both, but the thing is, I think, that many of us go through a period of undeterred creativity.

But with the years -and with age- often comes maturity, which is a nice euphemism for conformity and bitterness. Suddenly you have responsibilities or you are just adapting to ‘real’ life. So whenever I see new authors creating great new stories I feel at peace with myself; some people might let go of their dream but others cling to it and, in the end success comes.

I’m glad I decided to stick around with “The Strange Talent of Luther Strode”. I’m a long time comic book collector, and I know that ‘new’ rarely equals ‘good’. I still sample as many first issues as I can, but more often than not I get disappointed. However, now that I’ve finally finished reading the tragic story of Luther Strode I feel especially enthusiastic about fresh titles again, so I’ll make damn sure to preorder “The Legend of Luther Strode” which has been scheduled for October 2012.

Luther Strode & Petra

I feel like I should have said more about this final issue, but even a ‘spoilers alert’ would not be appropriate in this case, suffice to say that a lot -and I a mean a lot- of things happen in the final chapter of this saga. However I would like to mention the fantastic sequences conceived by Tradd Moore. Ultra-violence is not an easy trick to pull off… you can’t simply have blood, disembowelment and dismemberment galore. There must be something else, something that forces the reader to make sense of it all. Justin Jordan has written an amazing story, and Tradd Moore has transformed that script into pages so alive and so full of action that you can’t stop looking at them. Let’s add to that the magnificent colors provided by Felipe Sobreiro and we sure are in for a real treat. If you missed this 6 issue miniseries you’re still on time to buy the trade paperback. Let’s celebrate together the fact that a group of creators decided to keep their dream alive. I for one am quite thankful that they did.

Luther Strode versus the Librarian

Los cómics han sido parte de mi vida desde que aprendí a leer. Aunque llega un momento en la vida en el que coleccionar no es suficiente, y lo que uno quiere es crear. A veces escribir o dibujar, o ambas cosas, pero el asunto es, creo yo, que muchos de nosotros pasamos por un periodo de creatividad irrefrenable.

Pero con los años -y con la edad- a menudo llega la madurez, que es un bonito eufemismo para el conformismo y la amargura. Repentinamente, uno tiene responsabilidades o debe adaptarse a la vida 'real'. Así que cada vez que veo a autores nuevos creando historias nuevas y grandiosas me siento en paz conmigo mismo; algunas personas podrán desprenderse del sueño, pero otras se aferran a él y, al final, el éxito llega.

Me alegra haber decidido seguir comprando "El extraño talento de Luther Strode". He sido coleccionista por años, y sé que lo 'nuevo' raramente es igual a 'bueno'. Todavía le doy una oportunidad a tantos primeros números como pueda, pero por lo general termino decepcionado. Sin embargo, ahora que he terminado de leer la trágica historia de Luther Strode nuevamente me siento un entusiasmo especial por títulos frescos, así que me aseguraré de comprar por adelantado "La leyenda de Luther Strode" que ha sido programada para octubre del 2012.

100% violence / 100% violencia

Siento que debería haber hablado más sobre este número final, pero habría arruinado más de una sorpresa. Basta decir que un montón de cosas -un montón de verdad- suceden en este capítulo final. Sin embargo, me gustaría mencionar las fantásticas secuencias concebidas por Tradd Moore. La ultra-violencia no es algo fácil de conseguir... uno no puede simplemente poner sangre, destripamientos y mutilaciones en cantidad. Debe haber algo más, algo que fuerce al lector a darle un sentido a todo ello. Justin Jordan ha escrito una asombrosa historia, y Tradd Moore ha transformado ese guión en páginas tan vivas y llenas de acción que uno no puede dejar de mirarlas. Agreguemos los magníficos colores proporcionados por Felipe Sobreiro y definitivamente estamos frente a algo muy especial. Si se perdieron esta miniserie de 6 ejemplares todavía están a tiempo para comprar el tomo recopilatorio. Celebremos juntos el hecho de que un grupo de creadores decidió mantener vivo el sueño. Yo, en todo caso, les agradezco que así lo hayan hecho.
