In the shortest month of the year I only had time for one movie: Daniel Espinosa’s Life (2017). Combining horror and science fiction often leads to amazing results. I particularly enjoyed the way the suspense builds up in Life, as 6 astronauts experiment with a microorganism from Mars; slowly but surely, this new lifeform becomes a dangerous creature. There are some really intense sequences that will keep everyone at the edge of their seats; previous to the confrontation against the creature, the director introduces a group of compelling characters, played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Demolition), Ryan Reynolds (Woman in Gold), Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada, Olga Dykhovichnaya and Ariyon Bakare.

En el mes más corto del año, sólo tuve tiempo para una película: Life (2017) de Daniel Espinosa. La combinación de terror y ciencia ficción a menudo conduce a resultados sorprendentes. Disfruté particularmente la forma en que el suspenso va en aumento en Life. 6 astronautas experimentan con un microorganismo de Marte; lenta pero seguramente, esta nueva forma de vida se convierte en una criatura peligrosa. Providence Vol. 2 - Alan Moore & Jacen Burrows

What is the purpose of art? Is it to reflect our reality, like a mirror, or rather to delve deep down into our consciousness, thus bringing to life our innermost secrets and desires? Perhaps it is a combination of both; and Providence certainly proves how the literary influence of H.P. Lovecraft and the brilliant mind of Alan Moore can produce, in unison, a haunting and captivating horror masterpiece. In “The Picture” (originally published in Providence # 7, January 2016), a disturbed Robert Black arrives to Boston, only to find himself stuck in a nightmarish scenario: people have taken the streets, there is looting and fighting, some men rape women while others concentrate their energies in diverse acts of vandalism.

In Providence’s first volume we saw how regular people is usually blind to the cosmic horrors. The real darkness, the real monstrosity, can never be found on the surface. Intrigued by his recent experiences, Robert Black tracks down Mr. Pitman, a successful photographer and also an artist in his own right, specialized in cannibalistic monsters that chase humans in grotesque and savage underground sequences. For Black, this is the fruit of a feverish imagination, but for Mr. Pitman this is merely an objective representation of what really goes on in the world beneath us. There is a very intense moment that takes place when Black is confronted with the presence of one of the demons Mr. Pitman is so keen on illustrating. Once again, the limits between reality and fiction, perception and interpretation, dream and nightmare are blurred.

In “The Key” (Providence # 8, March 2016), Robert Black understands the true complexity of the oneiric realm, thanks to the assistance provided by Randall Carver, a writer specialized in fantasy and occultism. Carver’s 700 steps into deep slumber proves to be fundamental for Robert’s astral journey. Moore intertwines the fantastic short stories written by Carver with the ‘real life’ conversation and then with the dreamlike state achieved by the 700 steps technique. In a clever way, Moore introduces dialogues from the waking world into the literary works of fiction, establishing a strange but also strong connection between reality and fantasy.

This particular chapter is also a dream come true in many ways. Not only because the dream Robert has is more vivid than anything else, but also because Robert’s greatest wish is finally granted. During a cultural soiree hosted by Lord Dunsany (Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, the 18th Baron of Dunsany, considered in real life as one of the finest Irish fantasy writers), Robert Black finally meets his most admired author: a young H.P. Lovecraft. As most readers, I’m familiar only with the literary works of both Dunsany and Lovecraft, but I have no idea how they acted in public or how they conducted their normal, everyday affairs. Nevertheless, thanks to Moore’s outstanding narrative skills, we can read about this meeting of writers and believe every word of it. The fact that no biographical account supports this scene is meaningless, because in the hands of Moore, this peculiar encounter becomes more real than any historical fact. 

As Robert Black so aptly sums it up: “When I talked to Lovecraft I felt utterly convinced that I had somehow found my first writer of genius”, and it’s then when he understands what is his “one true and certain destination”: Providence, Rhode Island. Lovecraft’s hometown. “Outsiders” (Providence # 9, May 2016) is an intense chapter that revolves around Robert’s Black first day in Providence. The protagonist meets Howard Charles, a 17-year old boy who gives him a tour around the town’s old houses and abandoned churches. There is an obvious attraction between them, but it is handled with subtlety.

In St. John’s Church, Robert and Howard find the ancient relics of the Stella Sapiente, a secret society interested in occultism. Dusty and old volumes, a meteorite carved as a precious gem and other unholy items awaken something in the protagonist. And as soon as his young companion suggests a game of ‘cornholing’, Black agrees. This is a very erotic and powerful scene, not only in narrative terms but also graphically (Jacen Burows splendidly conveys the passion and the arousal of the couple).

Robert Black and H.P. Lovecraft meet again in “The Haunted Palace” (Providence # 10, June 2016). Black feels captivated by Lovecraft’s short stories, and he’s sure that this young and unknown writer will revolutionize American literature: “it seems that words and books, demonstrably, can change our world by changing our perception of it; can precipitate it to another state entirely”, explains Black. That is, precisely, the power of literature and art in general.

Boston

In “The Unnamable” (Providence # 11, November 2016) and “The Book” (Providence # 12, March 2017) all the plotlines converge, matching the uncertainty of Robert Black with the dire outcome announced in Neonomicon. Moore goes from the early 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, showing us the effects of H.P Lovecraft’s fantasies and the inevitable arrival of Yuggoth.

As usual, Jacen Burrows pages are like a chamber of resonance, in which Alan Moore’s concepts and ideas are heightened. The artist’s realistic style provides a contrast between the normal world of the protagonist and the insane Lovecraftian horror that lurks beneath it. Highly detailed and harmonic, Burrows images are visually arresting. Providence is certainly the best limited series I’ve read in a long time. And any fan of Moore, or horror in general, should pay attention to it.

¿Cuál es el propósito del arte? ¿Reflejar nuestra realidad, como un espejo, o más bien profundizar en nuestra conciencia, dando vida a nuestros secretos y deseos más íntimos? Quizás es una combinación de ambos; y Providence ciertamente demuestra cómo la influencia literaria de H.P. Lovecraft y la mente brillante de Alan Moore pueden producir, al unísono, una obra maestra de terror tan inquietante como cautivadora. En “La imagen” (publicado originalmente en Providence # 7, enero de 2016), un perturbado Robert Black llega a Boston, sólo para caer en un escenario de pesadilla: la gente ha tomado las calles, hay saqueos y peleas, algunos hombres violan mujeres mientras que otros concentran sus energías en diversos actos de vandalismo.

En el primer volumen de Providence vimos cómo la gente común suele estar ciega frente a los horrores cósmicos. La verdadera oscuridad, la verdadera monstruosidad, nunca se encuentra en la superficie. Intrigado por sus experiencias recientes, Robert Black rastrea al Sr. Pitman, un fotógrafo exitoso y también un artista talentoso especializado en monstruos caníbales que persiguen a los humanos en grotescas y salvajes secuencias subterráneas. Para Black, este es el fruto de una imaginación febril, pero para el Sr. Pitman esto es meramente una representación objetiva de lo que realmente sucede en el mundo debajo de nosotros. Hay un momento muy intenso que tiene lugar cuando Black es confrontado con la presencia de uno de los demonios que el Sr. Pitman está tan interesado en ilustrar. The secrets of Providence / los secretos de Providence

En “La clave” (Providence # 8, marzo de 2016), Robert Black comprende la verdadera complejidad del reino onírico, gracias a la ayuda brindada por Randall Carver, un escritor especializado en fantasía y ocultismo. Los 700 pasos para alcanzar el sueño profundo demuestran ser fundamentales para el viaje astral de Robert. Moore entrelaza los cuentos fantásticos escritos por Carver con la conversación de la “vida real” y luego con el estado de ensueño logrado con la técnica de los 700 pasos. De una manera inteligente, Moore introduce diálogos desde el mundo de la vigilia en las obras literarias de ficción, estableciendo una conexión extraña pero también fuerte entre la realidad y la fantasía.

Este capítulo en particular también es, en cierto modo, un sueño hecho realidad. Durante una velada cultural organizada por Lord Dunsany (Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, el 18º Barón de Dunsany, considerado en la vida real como uno de los mejores escritores irlandeses de fantasía), Robert Black finalmente conoce a su autor más admirado: un joven H.P. Lovecraft. Como la mayoría de los lectores, estoy familiarizado solamente con las obras literarias de Dunsany y Lovecraft, no tengo idea de cómo actuaban en público o de cómo eran sus vidas cotidianas. Sin embargo, gracias a las excelentes habilidades narrativas de Moore, podemos observar esta reunión de escritores y creer cada palabra. El hecho de que ningún dato biográfico respalde esta escena carece de relevancia, porque en manos de Moore este peculiar encuentro se vuelve más real que cualquier hecho histórico.

Como Robert Black lo resume tan acertadamente: “Cuando hablé con Lovecraft, me sentí completamente convencido de que, de alguna manera, había encontrado a mi primer escritor genial”, y es entonces cuando comprende cuál es su “único y verdadero destino”: Providence, Rhode Island. La ciudad natal de Lovecraft. “Marginales” (Providence # 9, mayo de 2016) es un capítulo intenso que gira en torno al primer día de Robert Black en Providence. El protagonista conoce a Howard Charles, un muchacho de 17 años que le da un recorrido por las casas antiguas y las iglesias abandonadas de la ciudad. Hay una atracción obvia entre ellos, pero se maneja con sutileza.

The coming of Yuggoth / la llegada de Yuggoth

En la iglesia de Saint John, Robert y Howard encuentran las antiguas reliquias de Stella Sapiente, una sociedad secreta interesada en el ocultismo. Volúmenes polvorientos y viejos, un meteorito tallado como una gema preciosa y otros elementos profanos despiertan algo en el protagonista. Y apenas su joven compañero sugiere un juego de ‘meterlo hasta el fondo’, Black acepta. Esta es una escena muy erótica y poderosa, no solo en términos narrativos sino también gráficamente (Jacen Burows transmite espléndidamente la pasión y la excitación de la pareja).

Searching for an answer in Robert Black's diaries / buscando una respuesta en los diarios de Robert Black

Robert Black y H.P. Lovecraft se encuentran nuevamente en “El palacio embrujado” (Providence # 10, junio de 2016). Black se siente cautivado por las historias cortas de Lovecraft, y está seguro de que este escritor joven y desconocido revolucionará la literatura estadounidense: “parece que las palabras y los libros, de manera demostrable, pueden cambiar nuestro mundo al cambiar nuestra percepción de él; y pueden precipitarlo a otro estado”, explica Black. Ese es, precisamente, el poder de la literatura y el arte en general.

En “El innombrable” (Providence # 11, noviembre de 2016) y “El libro” (Providence # 12, marzo de 2017) todos los hilos argumentales convergen, uniendo la incertidumbre de Robert Black con el nefasto resultado anunciado en el Neonomicon. Moore va desde principios del siglo XX hasta principios del siglo XXI, mostrándonos los efectos de las fantasías de H.P Lovecraft y la llegada inevitable de Yuggoth.

The end of the world as we know it / el fin del mundo tal como lo conocemos

Como es habitual, las páginas de Jacen Burrows son como una cámara de resonancia, en la que se intensifican los conceptos e ideas de Alan Moore. El estilo realista del artista proporciona un contraste entre el mundo normal del protagonista y el desquiciado horror Lovecraftiano que subyace a esa realidad. Sumamente detalladas y armónicas, las imágenes de Burrows son visualmente deslumbrantes. Providence es ciertamente la mejor serie limitada que he leído en mucho tiempo. Y cualquier fanático de Moore, o del horror en general, debería prestarle atención.

January Comic Books / Cómics de enero

I started 2018 with a fine selection of comic books! For instance, the extraordinary HC edition of The Vision (which I’ll definitely be reviewing soon). Busiek’s Batman Creature of the Night continues to be very good. Of course it’d be impossible not to have fun with Thor, X-Men, Cinema Purgatorio and Diablo House. But I must say my favorite issue of the month was The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson # 1. And now without further ado here are January’s comics as per solicitations:  

ASTONISHING X-MEN #7

¡Empecé el 2018 con una estupenda selección de cómics! Por ejemplo, el extraordinario tomo de The Vision (que reseñaré pronto). Batman Creature of the Night de Busiek sigue estando muy bien. Por supuesto, sería imposible no disfrutar títulos como Thor, X-Men, Cinema Purgatorio y Diablo House. Pero debo decir que mi cómic favorito del mes fue The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson # 1. Y ahora sin mayores preámbulos aquí están los cómics de enero:

January Films / películas de enero

In January I was hoping to watch a few movies but in the end I only had time for one: Vacation (2015), written and directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. This was quite an enjoyable comedy that makes a reference (and pays homage) to the Griswold vacation saga, while at the same time presenting an interesting take on contemporary families and the way we spend our free time. Vacation was good enough to make me laugh, and the cast was spot on: Ed Helms, Christina Applegate and Skyler Gisondo. One of my favorite scenes was the one with Chris Hemsworth in it.

En enero pensé que podría ver varias películas, pero al final sólo tuve tiempo para una sola: Vacation (2015), escrita y dirigida por John Francis Daley y Jonathan Goldstein. Es una comedia bastante agradable que hace referencia (y rinde homenaje) a la saga de las vacaciones de los Griswold, mientras que al mismo tiempo presenta una visión interesante de las familias contemporáneas y la forma en que pasamos nuestro tiempo libre. Vacation fue lo suficientemente buena para hacerme reír, y el elenco está bien elegido: Ed Helms, Christina Applegate y Skyler Gisondo. Una de mis escenas favoritas fue la de Chris Hemsworth. 

December comics / cómics de diciembre

What could be better as a Christmas gift than a fine selection of comics? In December I really enjoyed reading the DC Universe by Gaiman as well as the DC Universe by Byrne, 2 fantastic hardcover editions with plenty of unforgettable stories. Sacred Creatures and Astonishing X-Men were quite good, and Marvel Two In One was a nice surprise, however this month the big winner is Kurt Busiek, not only for his Astro City but also for his wonderful Batman: Creature of the Night (my favorite comic of the month!).

En diciembre realmente disfruté leyendo DC Universe de Gaiman así como DC Universe de Byrne, 2 fantásticos tomos en tapa dura con muchas historia inolvidables. Sacred Creatures y Astonishing X-Men estuvieron bastante bien, y Marvel Two In One fue una grata sorpresa, sin embargo el gran ganador del mes es Kurt Busiek, no sólo por su Astro City sino también por su maravilloso Batman: Creature of the Night (mi cómic favorito del mes).
