Technically these are not April comics, but they were in my last shipment from DCBS which included comics released in the last week of March. Anyway, like I said before, there haven’t been any new comics for the past couple of months so I guess it doesn’t really matter that much if the comics are from March or April. Anyway, let’s start with Legion of Super-Heroes, another fun issue by Bendis and Sook, Fantastic Four: Marvels Snapshots was a really nice surprise, but if I had to choose my favorite comic of the month then that would be Punisher Soviet # 6, Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows’ last issue of the miniseries is impressive. and now, without further ado, here are April comics as per solicitations:

An entire month of quarantine would drive anyone crazy. Fortunately, last month I was in good company, watching mostly series but also a few movies. On April 23rd director James Gunn suggested everyone to watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) from home and that’s what we did. It’s great to see Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker and everyone else reprising their roles from Guardians of the Galaxy. This is a fun and fast-paced sequel, and it’s great to see how the relationship between the characters has progressed. Gunn creates an exciting adventure, with a very ambitious threat that puts the entire galaxy at risk. Even if I still prefer the first one, Vol. 2 is just as entertaining as other Marvel movies, and it has amazing moments (like Stan Lee’s cameo while he talks with Uatu the Watcher), plus the inclusion of stars like Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.
Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004) are two of the best films Quentin Tarantino has ever directed, and that is saying a lot. Tarantino and Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction) came up with concept and wrote it together, and the result is a fascinating, intense, exciting and violent story that, at the beginning, seems to be only about revenge but that deep down is about love, and the difficulty of letting go the people we love the most. Professional assassin Uma Thurman decides to quit her dangerous job and settle down with an average guy, but before she can ask herself if she is ready to become a wife and a mother, she is attacked by her former associates and killed by Bill, or almost. She survives, stays in comma for years and finally recovers. In the first volume, we witness the protagonist hunting down members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Things have changed over the years, and nothing remains the same. There are so many unforgettable scenes, and it would be difficult to find such ambitious fight scenes like the one that takes place between the protagonist and Lucy Liu. Tarantino creates an intense and pulse-pounding adventure that doesn’t slow down even for a second. In the second volume we learn more about the past of the protagonist, her training years and the romantic relationship she had with Bill, her mentor and leader. In Tarantino’s cinematic universe violence always makes sense, and here violence can be even poetic in some of the scenes, which is always a rare accomplishment. There are many memorable scenes here, like the way in which the protagonist escapes from the graveyard, the fight with Daryl Hannah and, above all, the final confrontation with Bill, magnificently played by David Carradine. The last part of the film is like the calm before the storm, and it underlies all the tensions between the characters, for me, one of my favorite moments is the realization that no matter how much harm Bill has inflicted upon the protagonist, she still loves him deep down, even if she has decided to kill him. Both films are masterpieces, and that’s why I have included them in my personal historic 100 films of all times.

Un mes entero de cuarentena volvería loco a cualquiera. Afortunadamente, el mes pasado estuve en buena compañía, viendo principalmente series pero también algunas películas. El 23 de abril, el director James Gunn sugirió que todos vieran Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) desde casa y eso es lo que hicimos. Fue estupendo ver a Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker y a todos los demás repitiendo sus papeles de Guardians of the Galaxy. Esta es una secuela divertida y de buen ritmo, y es estupendo ver cómo ha progresado la relación entre los personajes. Gunn crea una aventura emocionante, con una amenaza muy ambiciosa que pone en riesgo a toda la galaxia. For the first time in almost a century, there will be no new comic books released, Diamond, the US main comic book distributor has been temporarily shutdown amid the pandemic. Fortunately, DCBS was still able to send March’s comics as well as comics that were scheduled to come out the first week of April. So that means that next month’s post about April comics will probably be the last for a while. I was very satisfied with the first issue of Marvels Snapshots and I’ll try to write a review about it, Marvels X continues to be good, and Ennis continues to amaze me in Punisher Soviet. However, my favorite comic of the month doesn’t come from Marvel but rather from DC, and I’m talking about Strange Adventures # 1, Tom King has done it again, great story and great art by Mitch Gerads and Doc Shaner. 8 years ago the first issue of Lot 13 came out from DC Comics. Originally planned to appear within the Wildstorm imprint, it ended up as part of regular DC offerings since Wildstorm had been eliminated from the publisher, much in the same way that a few years later Vertigo would disappear. At the time I reviewed the first issue, promising to do the same with the next ones, however I never got around it until now. So if you’ve been following this blog since 2012 then you’ll particularly enjoy this post.
We all know that Steve Niles loves the horror genre, and he has produced many horror-themed titles in the past. And Lot 13 had started as the quintessential haunted house story. However, in issue # 2 (originally published in January 2013) we are made privy to the terrible past surrounding the infamous lot 13, and the house built upon it. In a shocking scene, we see two drunk men taking turns and raping a woman. Although it is a violent scene, artist Glenn Fabry manages to depict the moment without making it more explicit than it needs to be. As readers we all understand what’s going on, and we also understand that the ghost of this woman will be forever trapped in the house now visited by the protagonists, along with the people executed during the Fairfax trials.
In issue # 2 (published in February 2013), we see the family desperately fighting to save their lives. Against an unending horde of mutilated and disfigured bodies, it looks as if all hope is lost. Fabry not only provides magnificent covers but also extraordinary and beautiful interior pages; his art shines in every sequence, and makes solid the ethereal concept of ghosts; furthermore, the amount of details, the careful design and the unique balance of every page turn this comic into the kind of work that deserves to be appreciated with our full attention.
A miniseries by such a famous creative team should have been successful but perhaps it didn’t reach its audience due to a series of reason. First of all, it’s a miniseries that would’ve fit well in Wildstorm but that seems slightly out of place under the DC Comics label. But the second reason, and perhaps the most important one, is that around the time the miniseries was published, a number of comic book writers openly complained about the use of rape and promised never to include such scenes in their works. This was one of the many situations in which the division between fiction and reality was forgotten. We can read or write a work of fiction about rape and that doesn’t mean that we condone rape.
However, the premise of some writers was that talking or even mentioning sexual abuse in the pages of a comic book would be an insult to victims of rape, however, this attempt of erasure feeds into the trauma, because in order to heal it’s necessary to remember and to accept what has happened, something which is extremely difficult to victims of sexual abuse who as a psychological defense mechanism deny what happened to them.

Una miniserie de un equipo creativo tan famoso debería haber tenido éxito, pero tal vez no llegó a su audiencia debido a una serie de razones.
