Kickstarter Campaign - Support the Next Comic by Arcadio Bolaños!

After months of hard work, I finally decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign for my new comic book: Infectious! Although previous comics have been released directly through Comixology (with a very limited print run), I decided to create a campaign for this one. So far our friends at the amazing website Sequart (@Sequart) and Lucas Gattoni (@LetteringBear) have helped us spread the news about Infectious. So of course now it’s my turn to do the same. 

This is basically my take on superheroes fighting (or trying to fight) against Covid and Coronavirus restrictions, mainly inspired on the frustrations and relationship problems I had during the beginning of the pandemic. I'm very proud of the work, and this will also be my first full-length comic (instead of the usual anthology of short stories).

Después de meses de arduo trabajo, finalmente decidí lanzar una campaña de Kickstarter para mi nuevo cómic: ¡Infectious! Aunque los cómics anteriores salieron directamente a través de Comixology (con una tirada muy limitada), decidí crear una campaña para este. Hasta ahora, nuestros amigos del asombroso sitio web Sequart (@Sequart) y Lucas Gattoni (@LetteringBear) nos han ayudado a difundir las noticias sobre Infectious. Así que, por supuesto, ahora me toca a mí hacer lo mismo.

Esta es básicamente mi opinión sobre los superhéroes que luchan (o intentan luchar) contra las restricciones de Covid y Coronavirus, la idea está principalmente inspirada en las frustraciones y problemas de relación que tuve durante el comienzo de la pandemia. September Comics / Cómics de setiembre

A few days before celebrating Halloween with my new group of German friends I sat down and finished reading September comics (yes, I’m a bit behind). I got some really intense Avatar comics from previous years (Rover Red Charlie was the best of the bunch). Eternals Celestia and Batman: Reptilian were quite good. The Nice House on the Lake #5 is an extraordinary comic, however, my favorite this month is Strange Adventures #12, a fitting end to a great miniseries! And now without further ado here are October comics as per solicitations:

BATMAN REPTILIAN #4

(W) Garth Ennis (A/CA) Liam Sharp. The monster—revealed! Trailing behind the mysterious reptilian menace savaging Gotham, Batman hits the streets hard searching for answers but finds only more questions. The Dark Knight takes his search beneath the streets and into the sewers to seek out Killer Croc. Unos días antes de celebrar Halloween con mi nuevo grupo de amigos alemanes me senté y terminé de leer los cómics de setiembre (ya lo sé, me falta ponerme al día). Leí algunos cómics de Avatar realmente intensos de años anteriores (Rover Red Charlie fue el mejor del grupo). Eternals Celestia y Batman: Reptilian fueron bastante buenos. The Nice House on the Lake # 5 es un cómic extraordinario; sin embargo, mi favorito de este mes es Strange Adventures # 12, ¡un final apropiado para una gran miniserie! Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de octubre:

October films / películas de octubre

October was a fun month! I got the chance to go to Wisconsin again and I celebrated Halloween with friends here in Davis, California. Fortunately I also had time for a couple of new releases: Denis Villeneuve’s triumphant return to sci-fi is a love letter to the genre and to Frank Herbert’s novel: Dune (2021). Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) is extraordinary in his role as Paul Atreides, a young man with many hidden talents and the heir of a noble house. What seems to be at first a promising incursion into the deserts of the planet Arrakis, in search of the spice, the most precious substance in the universe, turns out to be a confrontation of epic dimensions between two noble houses, Atreides and Harknonnen. This intergalactic rivalry presents complex political issues, as well as many betrayals and secrets. I had read the novel many years ago, and I feel like only such a remarkable filmmaker like Villeneuve would’ve been able to capture the spirit of the book. It’s fascinating to observe the exploratory journey of the protagonist, his process of self-discovery, but it’s also heartbreaking to observe how house Atreides is ambushed and decimated. With nothing left, the protagonist and his mother venture into the desert, with the hope of finding allies. With an astonishing cinematography, a captivating script, beautiful music by Hans Zimmer, and an impressive all-star cast composed of Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad), Javier Bardem and Charlotte Rampling, Dune is definitely one of the best films of 2021.  

In Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho (2021) , the veteran actor plays the role of an old cowboy who is recruited to rescue his boss’s son Eduardo Minett, who is in Mexico. Crossing the border is easy, but finding the boy isn’t so easy. Neglected by his mother, this kid has found a way to survive in the streets by making money in cock fighting. The protagonist will soon become a fatherlike figure for this boy who has no role models in his life. But what is especially moving is the journey back to the US and the way the two characters interact with each other and with the people they meet in small Mexican towns. Although this isn’t Eastwood’s best movie, it’s still quite enjoyable.

¡Octubre fue un mes divertido! Tuve la oportunidad de ir a Wisconsin nuevamente y celebré Halloween con amigos aquí en Davis, California. Afortunadamente, también tuve tiempo para ver un par de estrenos: el regreso triunfal de Denis Villeneuve a la ciencia ficción es una carta de amor al género y a la novela de Frank Herbert: Dune (2021). Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) está extraordinario en su papel de Paul Atreides, un joven con muchos talentos ocultos y heredero de una casa noble. Lo que en un principio parece ser una incursión prometedora en los desiertos del planeta Arrakis, en busca de la especia, la sustancia más preciada del universo, resulta ser un enfrentamiento de dimensiones épicas entre dos casas nobles, Atreides y Harknonnen. Esta rivalidad intergaláctica presenta problemas políticos complejos, así como muchas traiciones y secretos. Había leído la novela hace muchos años y siento que sólo un cineasta tan notable como Villeneuve habría podido capturar el espíritu del libro. Es fascinante observar el viaje exploratorio del protagonista, su proceso de autodescubrimiento, pero también es desgarrador observar cómo la casa Atreides es emboscada y diezmada. Sin nada, el protagonista y su madre se adentran en el desierto, con la esperanza de encontrar aliados. Con una cinematografía asombrosa, un guión cautivador, una preciosa música de Hans Zimmer y un elenco de estrellas impresionante compuesto por Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad), Javier Bardem y Charlotte Rampling, Dune es definitivamente una de los las mejores películas del 2021.

En Cry Macho (2021) de Clint Eastwood, el veterano actor interpreta el papel de un viejo vaquero que es reclutado para rescatar al hijo de su jefe, Eduardo Minett, que se encuentra en México. Cruzar la frontera es fácil, pero encontrar al muchacho no es tan fácil. Descuidado por su madre, este niño ha encontrado una manera de sobrevivir en las calles ganando dinero en peleas de gallos. El protagonista pronto se convertirá en una figura paterna para este niño que no tiene modelos a seguir en su vida. Pero lo que es especialmente conmovedor es el viaje de regreso a los Estados Unidos y la forma en que los dos personajes interactúan entre sí y con la gente que conocen en los pequeños pueblos mexicanos. Aunque esta no es la mejor película de Eastwood, igual es bastante agradable.

Eternals # 5 & 6 - Kieron Gillen & Esad Ribić

In 1976, Jack Kirby introduced the Eternals by showing us an archeological expedition to the cave of the gods, id est, the remains of a Celestial settlement on Earth. The man leading the expedition was no other than Ike Harris, whose secret identity would be later revealed: Ikaris. Although some readers might miss the ‘secret identity’ angle, the truth is that Neil Gaiman didn’t see it as a fundamental element of the Eternals universe, and neither did Kieron Gillen.

Esad Ribic

There is, however, a connection with our reality, as seen from the first issue, in which the Eternals visit the streets of New York. The fifth chapter of “Only Death is Eternal” (originally published in Eternals # 5, August 2021), opens up with a fabulous panel in which artist Esad Ribić combines New York’s skyline with an ominous atmosphere, while drawing our attention to the exclusive residence of Tony Stark. The Avenger is having lunch with Sersi. And that’s when they get interrupted by an Eternal that hadn’t appeared before. 

Esad Ribic

This mysterious Eternal, also known as the Forgotten One, was Gilgamesh in a previous life. The Forgotten One belongs to a rebel faction of Eternals, who have sworn to defend humans at all costs buy curtailing Eternals’ intervention in human affairs. Of course, such diplomatic statement doesn’t translate well to the page, and soon Ikaris and the Forgotten One are fighting against each other. Meanwhile, Druig and Thanos are conspiring against the Eternals.

Sersi & Tony Stark

Ribić’s covers are astonishing. For issue # 5 we can perceive all the powerful and energy emitting from Ikaris and the Forgotten One as they fight; and in issue # 6, we have another amazing composition that revolves around a central figure, Thanos, which is enrichened by the presence all the other figures orbiting around it, in this case Eternals engaged in combat. Ribić creates a dramatic image, that retains all the dynamism of a real battle. 

Ikaris versus Gilgamesh

The sixth and final chapter of “Only Death is Eternal” (Eternals # 6, September 2021) begins with the fight between Thanos and the Eternals. Now for those who have seen the Avengers movies (and come on, who hasn’t?), they’re probably wondering if the Eternals are powerful enough to defeat Thanos, the supervillain capable of destroying all of the Avengers together. The answer is that the Eternals have the power of the Celestials, and although this power has been diluted, it still strong enough to rival that of Thanos. The match is quite even, and I must say I particularly enjoyed all the fighting sequence.

Thanos & Druig

To prevent the destruction of the Celestial machine, which would bring about the end of life on our planet, Ikaris decides to sacrifice his life to save the machine. The Celestial machine repairs itself and resurrects Ikaris. The machine explains how infinitely complex the recreation of a being like Ikaris can be, and yet such recreation is possible; the one thing, however, that the machine cannot replicate is the spark of life, which it must steal from a living human, and that human is Toby Robson, the boy Ikaris had sworn to protect. Life cannot come without a price, and that is the most shocking revelation from Gillen’s first saga. The Eternals didn’t know about it, but for centuries they have been responsible for stealing human lives.

En 1976, Jack Kirby introdujo a los Eternos mostrándonos una expedición arqueológica a la así llamada cueva de los dioses; es decir, los restos de un asentamiento celestial en la Tierra. El hombre que dirigía la expedición no era otro que Ike Harris, cuya identidad secreta se revelaría más tarde: Ikaris. Aunque algunos lectores puedan echar de menos el ángulo de la "identidad secreta", la verdad es que Neil Gaiman no lo veía como un elemento fundamental del universo de Eternals, ni tampoco Kieron Gillen.

Sin embargo, existe una conexión con nuestra realidad, como se ve desde el primer número, en el que los Eternals visitan las calles de New York. El quinto capítulo de “Sólo la muerte es eterna” (publicado originalmente en Eternals # 5, agosto del 2021), se abre con una viñeta fabulosa en la que el artista Esad Ribić combina el horizonte de New York con una atmósfera ominosa, mientras llama nuestra atención sobre la residencia exclusiva de Tony Stark. El Avenger está almorzando con Sersi. Y es entonces cuando son interrumpidos por un Eterno que no había aparecido antes.

Thanos versus Ikaris

Este misterioso Eterno, también conocido como el Olvidado, fue Gilgamesh en una vida anterior. El Olvidado pertenece a una facción rebelde de Eternals, que han jurado defender a los humanos a toda costa y restringir la intervención de Eternals en los asuntos humanos. Por supuesto, tal declaración diplomática no se traduce bien en la práctica, y pronto Ikaris y el Olvidado están luchando entre sí. Mientras tanto, Druig y Thanos conspiran contra los Eternos.

Resurrected / resucitado

El sexto y último capítulo de “Sólo la muerte es eterna” (Eternals # 6, septiembre de 2021) comienza con la pelea entre Thanos y los Eternals. Ahora, para aquellos que han visto las películas de los Vengadores (y vamos, ¿quién no las ha visto?), Probablemente se estén preguntando si los Eternos son lo suficientemente poderosos como para derrotar a Thanos, el supervillano capaz de destruir a todos los Vengadores juntos. La respuesta es que los Eternos tienen el poder de los Celestiales, y aunque este poder se ha diluido, sigue siendo lo suficientemente fuerte como para rivalizar con el de Thanos. El combate está bastante igualado, y debo decir que disfruté especialmente toda la secuencia de lucha.

Toby Robson

Para evitar la destrucción de la máquina celestial, que provocaría el fin de la vida en nuestro planeta, Ikaris decide sacrificar su vida para salvar la máquina. La máquina celestial se repara a sí misma y resucita a Ikaris. La máquina explica cuán infinitamente compleja puede ser la recreación de un ser como Ikaris y, sin embargo, tal recreación es posible; lo único, sin embargo, que la máquina no puede replicar es la chispa vital, que debe robarle a un humano vivo, y ese humano es Toby Robson, el chico que Ikaris había jurado proteger. Eternals # 3 & 4 - Kieron Gillen & Esad Ribić

Of course we know that Jack Kirby was the artist responsible for the creation of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and basically almost the entire Marvel Universe. However, in all of these situations he was working with a writer, either Joe Simon or Stan Lee. It wasn’t until when he was finally allowed to write and draw his own stories, and the result was New Gods for DC Comics and the Eternals for Marvel. Kirby also introduced the Celestials, who created both the Eternals and the Deviants. 

Esad Ribic

In the third chapter of “Only Death is Eternal” (originally published in Eternals # 3, May 2021), Thena, described as “a goddess in Hell”, wakes up next to her lover, a Deviant, in the city of Lemuria. An invincible warrior, Thena also seems to have an insatiable appetite for sexual encounters, and she always prefer different species, so instead of turning to her fellow Eternals, she’d rather mingle with humans or Deviants or what have you. Esad Ribić’s design of Lemuria seems to come from our dreams, but it also seems to come from our past. Lemuria is a combination of how we imagine mythical cities like Atlantis, that belong to the past, and how we dream about new and fantastic cities. With an extraordinary splash page, Ribić shows us how impressive Lemuria is.

It’s also in this third chapter that we see Toby Robson, an ordinary teenager that has been deemed worthy of Ikaris’s attention. According to the Eternal, Toby might die soon, but that won’t happen if Ikaris offers to protect him. Ikaris also enlists Sprite as Toby’s personal bodyguard. In a casual conversation between the Eternal and the parents, the idea of Ikaris simply being present there is what might actually endanger Toby is something that will pay off in the end of the miniseries, but not in the usual way of a villain attacking a hero, and civilians getting hurt in the process. Finally, we get to see the interactions between Thena and Sersi. 

Thena

As powerful as the interior art is, the painted covers by Ribić are even more exquisite. The cover for issue # 3 presents a magnificent composition, with Sprite, Thena and Sersi looking at us with determination, while Thena’s frightened deviant lover absconds, almost camouflaging in the background, which is the mythic city of Lemuria. The cover for issue # 4 is also a fine example of design, balance and proportions; beautifully executed and with a special eye for details, once again Ribić proves to be an amazing artist. 

Lemuria

In the fourth chapter of “Only Death is Eternal” (Eternals # 4, June 2021) we appreciate even more the scope of Gillen’s intentions as a writer, and especially his impressive world-building abilities. In addition to the main storyline, Gillen is providing us, the readers, with a lot of information about the different groups of Eternals, their cities, their past and so on. Here we also see Phastos attempting to repair the Celestial machine, the one that has existed for millennia and that is responsible for the resurrection of the Eternals. 

Ikaris & Toby Robson

Of course, one of my favorite moments is the one in which we see Sprite taking the school bus with Toby Robson. The two of them talk, and as a way of reassuring Toby that he is well protected, Sprite points out to the sky; and in a magnificent panel we see Ikaris hovering over the city. But what is so special about this boy that requires the protection of not one but two of the most powerful Eternals? That question will be answered in the final issue of this story-arc.

Por supuesto, sabemos que Jack Kirby fue el artista responsable de la creación del Capitán América, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, los X-Men, los Cuatro Fantásticos y básicamente casi todo el Universo Marvel. Sin embargo, en todas estas situaciones estaba trabajando con un escritor, ya sea Joe Simon o Stan Lee. No fue hasta que finalmente se le permitió escribir y dibujar sus propias historias, que los resultados fueron los New Gods para DC Comics y los Eternals para Marvel. Kirby también introdujo a los Celestiales, quienes crearon tanto a los Eternos como a los Desviantes.

Sersi & Thena

En el tercer capítulo de “Sólo la muerte es eterna” (publicado originalmente en Eternals # 3, mayo del 2021), Thena, descrita como "una diosa en el infierno", se despierta junto a su amante, un desviante, en la ciudad de Lemuria. Una guerrera invencible, Thena también parece tener un apetito insaciable por los encuentros sexuales, y siempre prefiere especies diferentes, por lo que en lugar de recurrir a sus compañeros Eternos, prefiere mezclarse con humanos o desviantes o lo que encuentro por el camino. El diseño de Esad Ribić de Lemuria parece provenir de nuestros sueños, pero también parece provenir de nuestro pasado. Lemuria es una combinación de cómo imaginamos ciudades míticas como la Atlántida, que pertenecen al pasado, y cómo soñamos con ciudades nuevas y fantásticas. Con una página completa extraordinaria, Ribić nos muestra lo impresionante que es Lemuria.

deviants / desviantes

También es en este tercer capítulo donde vemos a Toby Robson, un adolescente común y corriente que ha sido considerado digno de la atención de Ikaris. Según el Eterno, Toby podría morir pronto, pero eso no sucederá si Ikaris le ofrece protegerlo. Ikaris también recluta a Sprite como guardaespaldas personal de Toby. En una conversación casual entre el Eterno y los padres, la idea de que Ikaris simplemente esté presente allí es lo que realmente podría poner en peligro a Toby; algo que dará frutos al final de la miniserie, pero no de la forma habitual en la que un villano ataca a un héroe y los civiles resultan heridos en el proceso. Finalmente, podemos ver las interacciones entre Thena y Sersi.

Druig

Por poderoso que sea el arte interior, las portadas pintadas a mano por Ribić son aún más exquisitas. La portada del número 3 presenta una composición magnífica, con Sprite, Thena y Sersi mirándonos con determinación, mientras el asustado amante desviante de Thena se escapa, casi camuflándose en el fondo, que es la mítica ciudad de Lemuria. La portada del número 4 también es un buen ejemplo de diseño, equilibrio y proporciones; bellamente ejecutada, y con un ojo especial para los detalles, una vez más Ribić demuestra ser un artista increíble. 

Phastos

En el cuarto capítulo de “Sólo la muerte es eterna” (Eternals # 4, junio del 2021) apreciamos aún más el alcance de las intenciones de Gillen como escritor, y especialmente sus impresionantes habilidades para construir mundos. Además de la historia principal, Gillen nos proporciona a nosotros, los lectores, mucha información sobre los diferentes grupos de Eternals, sus ciudades, su pasado, etc. Aquí también vemos a Phastos intentando reparar la máquina Celestial, la que existe desde hace milenios y que es responsable de la resurrección de los Eternos. 

Toby Robson, Sprite & Ikaris

Por supuesto, uno de mis momentos favoritos es aquel en el que vemos a Sprite tomando el autobús escolar con Toby Robson. Los dos hablan, y como una forma de asegurarle a Toby que está bien protegido, Sprite señala al cielo; y en una magnífica viñeta vemos a Ikaris sobrevolando la ciudad. Pero, ¿qué tiene de especial este chico que requiere la protección no de uno sino de dos de los Eternos más poderosos? Esa pregunta será respondida en el número final de este arco argumental.
