Uncanny Avengers # 3 - Rick Remender & John Cassaday

There is a tonal change in the third chapter of Uncanny Avengers. Remender has found the proper terms and the most precise words to describe the events that are about to take place. This is a dark tale and the writer manages to convey that feeling. 

We all know that Charles Xavier’s had the most powerful mutant mind on Earth. But even taxed with such an enormous temptation, Xavier never used his powers to subjugate his equals or to fulfill his every whim. Had this power been in the hands of a lesser man, he would have been corrupted by it. But now it is in the hands of one of the most perverse and immoral individuals: the Red Skull.

Pursuing his secret agenda, Red Skull attacks New York with waves upon waves of mental power. Reigniting the hatred in people’s heart; increasing their intolerance and fueling their natural aggressiveness. The results are catastrophic. And although the newly formed team of Uncanny Avengers arrives in time, they must first fight against the Red Skull’s S-Men. In the end, however, not even the mighty Thor can resist the telepathic commands of the Red Skull.

John Cassaday is probably the best illustrator we can see in Marvel right now. His Captain America’s iconic postures are similar to the ones we saw when Cassaday was penciling and inking Marvel Knight’s Captain America, back in 2002. His Wolverine’s brutality and ferocity resemble the version of the character as depicted in Astonishing X-Men, in 2004. There is a particular panel that exudes heroism: the one in which we see Havoc, Captain America and Wolverine together.

And there is also such a sense of power when Thor lands. And such a sense of strength when the Odinson fights against one of the S-Men. Of course, the large panel in which Captain America fights against a mind-controlled SWAT team is priceless. Here Cassaday uses angles and perspectives that most pencilers would refuse to even consider, due to its difficulty.

Como parte de su agenda secreta, Red Skull ataca New York con una onda tras otra de poder mental. Reavivando el odio en el corazón de la gente; incrementando su intolerancia y encendiendo su agresividad natural. Los resultados son catastróficos. Y aunque el nuevo equipo de Uncanny Avengers llega a tiempo, primero deben luchar contra los Hombres S de Red Skull. John Cassaday es probablemente el mejor ilustrador que podemos ver en Marvel ahora mismo. Y también hay un gran sentido de poderío cuando Thor aterriza. Y mucha fuerza cuando el hijo de Odín pelea contra uno de los Hombres S. Por supuesto, el panel largo en el que Captain America lucha contra un equipo SWAT controlado mentalmente no tiene precio. Aquí Cassaday usa ángulos y perspectivas que muchos dibujantes se rehusarían incluso a considerar, a causa de su dificultad.

1 Weekend in Asia: This time the group was consistently the same: Juan Carlos Gibson, Rodrigo and Pamela (his girlfriend). In the night there was going to be a party / concert in Asia Boulevard, the cheapest ticket was like twenty bucks, but Gibson knew the organizers so he got free tickets for all of us. Although I didn't precisely make it to the concert; and I blame my maracuyá sour. 

Ximena and Richard Quantrill were having a barbacue right next to the third floor's swimming pool, so I had the opportunity to eat a lot, and I felt like I had to contribute something in return... Ximena loves maracuyá sour, and I had just bought a bottle of pisco. So I quickly turned into a barman, and I made paracuyá sour for everyone, which they enjoyed tremendously and praised quite a bit. So, I got over-enthusiastic about it, and after a while I was a bit drunk. I asked if someone else wanted more alcohol, the answer was affirmative, so what was left of my bottle disappeared in minutes, and then I stayed with Richard and Ximena's friends, I had some wine too, and I had a lot of fun trying to identify songs. Richard had a lot of eighties movies soundtracks in his iPod, so he played one song and we had to guess what movie was it from, I was right at least three times, which positively impressed Richard. 

I asked him if he had ever visited Chessington and he said yes, and he even mentioned the zoo. When I was drunk enough I said goodbye to everyone, went downstairs and into the guest room, and I fell asleep immediately. Sunday, as usual, Ximena invited us breakfast and then lunch. Anyway, afterwards I searched with Gibson our numbered beach umbrella, everything is always very organized in Asia's beaches as you'd say, and Gibson as usual made fun of all the ridiculous habits of rich people, and we even had a discussion about exclusiveness and private beaches. Anyway, I don't really like the sand, it gets everywhere and makes me feel dirty, so I left him there and I went back to the house. After a while Gibson returned and asked me if I wanted to go to the clubhouse, we went there and we decided to make a small competition in the big swimming pool, obviously I lost; he said that I was tired because of yesterday's non-stop-drinking, so we stayed there in peace talking about meaningless things. It was so relaxing.

A falta de una hubo dos interesantes muestras esta semana en Dédalo. La primera, el día martes, fue ComprArte organizada por Hecho con Amor. Se trató de una subasta ciega a beneficio de las personas que padecen esclerosis múltiple. Allí se podía adquirir una gran variedad de obras de artistas de renombre como Mariella Agois y Christian Fuchs. De hecho, en esta ocasión, Christian había contribuido con “Der Garten” un magnífico trabajo de composición fotográfica que impresionó a muchos de los concurrentes. Me pasé toda la noche conversando con Marcos Palacios y Paola Tejada, mientras tomábamos unos deliciosos chilcanos cortesía de Pisco Larroca, la marca de Roca Rey. 

El día jueves se presentó la segunda muestra, esta vez de joyería: “Espais. Encontres” de Anna Maresma Ribas. Anna Maresma trabaja la plata con pasión, doblando la filigrana, hilvanando trazos argentados y experimentando con una multitud de diseños novedosos. Esta vez me encontré con Maxwell, artífice de El espejo de Maxwell. 

Estuvimos conversando largo rato sobre diversos temas, desde cómics hasta películas. Siempre es divertido hacer un recuento de lo que uno publica en esta ‘bitácora virtual’, pero lo más divertido es hacerlo no virtual sino personalmente. Fue un gusto conversar con Maxwell, y ha hecho que me anime a asistir al encuentro de bloggers que se realiza cada año. Me hace mucha ilusión conocer a las otras personas a quienes solamente ‘veo’ a través de sus posts. 

Y ahora los dejo con un dibujillo mío. Y, también, con un espectacular cuadro de mi amigo Renzo Núñez Melgar Vega. El año pasado visité el taller que él comparte con Asad López de Castilla en más de una ocasión y tuve la oportunidad de ver, poco a poco, el avance de sus pinturas. Me llamó en especial una que reúne a Miguel Grau, He-Man, Rick Grimes (de The Walking Dead), el Chavo del ocho, Van Gogh, Don Corleone (“El Padrino” interpretado por Marlon Brando), V For Vendetta, Steve Jobs, Darth Vader, Salvador Dalí, entre otros. ¿Qué podría congregar a este variopinto grupo de personajes? La respuesta quizás sea obvia si prestan atención a las cuatro figuras que están en primer plano. El que adivine, que deje un comentario.

Young Avengers # 1 - Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie

Allan Heinberg’s groundbreaking Young Avengers series introduced to the Marvel Universe a unique and refreshing group of teenaged heroes. I’ve already talked about how much the Young Avengers meant to me, when I first encountered them around 2006, a couple of years after the first issue came out. In many ways, Heinberg’s work is what brought me back to Marvel comics, and now after a considerable hiatus Kieron Gillen’s reinvention of the team has made me a Marvel fan again. ‘Nuff said. 

I wasn’t sure about the virtues of this new iteration of the group: Would it retain the emotional intensity of Heinberg’s scripts? Would it portray teenagers with honesty? Would it make me and other readers question established concepts? Would it be a beacon of hope, in a land infested with intolerance and discrimination? I am glad to say that the answer to all these questions is a resounding YES. 

I’ve read a lot of Marvel NOW first issues, and this is by far the best. I can’t believe how excited I felt when I saw Marvel Boy and Kate Bishop doing what every teenager wants to do: fucking. Although, of course, this is sex in outer space that gets interrupted by a Skrull attack, but still things work out in the end. Last time I read about Marvel Boy was in Grant Morrison’s brilliant miniseries. And I think after him no one knew how to write about Noh-Varr, but Gillen has found his true voice, updating it a little bit, but retaining the “alien boy” concept that Morrison so splendidly developed.

But before approving Gillen as the new Young Avengers writer there was the ultimate test: Billy Kaplan and Teddy Altman. Luckily for us, the author understands perfectly well how important they are, and what makes a team of juvenile heroes work so well within the boundaries of the Marvel Universe: “Its optimism. Its intelligence. Its characters and its genuine emotions for one another. One of modern comics most compelling couples”.

Last time we saw “modern comics most compelling couple”, Wiccan had been depressed for months and had stopped being a superhero. The Young Avengers had disbanded. Now, Hulkling is still patrolling the nights, helping people. And when Wiccan finds out, they argue about it. But they make up quickly and, of course, make out too.     

I’ve always admired Jim Cheung’s art, and I was very worried about Jamie McKelvie. Honestly, I didn’t think he could simply step in and make Jim’s characters his own. But he pulls that off in an instant. This isn’t the team that Allan and Jim brought to us, this is a new team, and McKelvie is the ideal artist for it. His neat lines and his clean designs are amazing, but there is something else, in every panel, in every image, you feel how much he loves these characters. His illustrations transmit such a strong emotional resonance. And Matthew Wilson’s colors complement and enhance the art impeccably, while adding the right touch of warmness.

I guess only a couple of British creators could awaken in me so much enthusiasm. I have to admit that it took me a while to decide which cover to buy. In the end I chose the Bryan Lee O’Malley variant. There was just something quite alluring about it. I don’t know if it was the night club / disco vibe it had, or the childish innocence of Kid Loki, or the sweaty expression of Ms. America, or perhaps the sexually charged pose of Wiccan and Hulking, and the way they can’t stop touching each other on the dancing floor. Well, whatever it was, it sure captured my attention. And I hope it also captured yours.

Billy Kaplan & Teddy Altman

"Young Avengers", la innovadora serie de Allan Heinberg, fue el punto de partida de un refrescante grupo de héroes adolescentes. Estos "Young Avengers" significaron mucho para mí, cuando los encontré por primera vez en el 2006, un par de años después del inicio de la colección. De un modo u otro, la obra de Heinberg es lo que me hizo regresar a Marvel comics, y ahora luego de un considerable hiato, la reinvención del equipo a manos de Gillen me ha hecho un fan de Marvel otra vez. Ya dije suficiente.

No estaba seguro sobre las virtudes de esta nueva encarnación del equipo: ¿conservaría la intensidad emocional de los guiones de Heinberg? ¿Retrataría a los adolescentes con honestidad? ¿Lograría que yo y otros lectores cuestionemos conceptos establecidos? ¿Sería un faro de esperanza, en una región infestada de intolerancia y discriminación? Me alegra decir que la respuesta a todas estas preguntas es un sonoro SÍ. 

He leído muchos de los primeros números de Marvel NOW, y este es de lejos el mejor. No puedo creer lo emocionado que me sentí cuando vi a Marvel Boy y Kate Bishop haciendo lo que todo adolescente quiere: follar. Aunque, desde luego, esto es sexo en el espacio exterior, con la interrupción de un ataque Skrull, pero igual las cosas se nivelan al final. La última vez que leí sobre Marvel Boy fue en la brillante miniserie de Grant Morrison. Y creo que después de él nadie supo cómo escribir a Noh-Varr, pero Gillen ha encontrado su verdadera voz, actualizándola un poco, pero manteniendo el concepto de "chico alien" que Morrison desarrolló de manera espléndida.

Pero antes de aprobar a Gillen como el nuevo escritor de "Young Avengers", quedaba la última evaluación: Billy Kaplan y Teddy Altman. Por suerte para nosotros, el autor entiende a la perfección lo importantes que son, y qué es lo que hace que un equipo de héroes juveniles funcione tan bien en los confines del universo Marvel: "Su optimismo. Su inteligencia. Sus personajes y las emociones genuinas del uno por el otro. Una de las parejas más cautivadoras de los cómics modernos".

La última vez que vimos a "la pareja más cautivadora de los cómics modernos", Wiccan había estado deprimido por meses y había abandonado su rol de súper-héroe. Los Jóvenes Vengadores se habían desintegrado. Ahora, Hulkling sigue patrullando por las noches, ayudando a la gente. Y cuando Wiccan se entera, discuten. Pero se reconcilian y, por supuesto, también se besan.

Siempre he admirado el arte de Jim Cheung, y estaba muy preocupado por Jamie McKelvie. Lo digo con honestidad: no pensé que él podría entrar al juego y apropiarse de los personajes de Jim. Pero lo consigue en un instante. Este no es el equipo de Allan y Jim, es uno nuevo, y McKelvie es el artista ideal. Sus líneas nítidas y sus diseños limpios son asombrosos, pero hay algo más, en cada viñeta, en cada imagen, uno siente que él adora a estos personajes. Sus ilustraciones transmiten una resonancia emocional. Y los colores de Matthew Wilson complementan y mejoran el arte de manera impecable, mientras que añaden el toque justo de calidez.

Supongo que sólo una pareja de creadores británicos podría despertar en mí tanto entusiasmo. Debo admitir que me tomó un buen rato decidir qué portada comprar. Al final, elegí la variante de Bryan Lee O’Malley. Había algo seductor en ella. No sé si sea la vibra discoteca / club nocturno, la inocencia infantil de Kid Loki, o la expresión sudorosa de Ms. America, o tal vez la pose con carga sexual de Wiccan y Hulking, y la manera en la que no pueden dejar de tocarse el uno al otro en la pista de baile. Bueno, lo que sea que haya sido, capturó del todo mi atención. Y espero que también capture la vuestra.

February comics / cómics de febrero

With almost 20 comics and 2 trade paperbacks I was afraid it would take me longer to finish reading everything. Anyway, against all odds my favorite comic of the month was Young Avengers # 1 and I’ll definitely write a review about it. The conclusion of the Hit-Girl miniseries was quite interesting, and the conclusion of Happy was very intense. I loved the third chapter of Witch Doctor, arguably the best Image miniseries right now. The first issue of Snapshot was a very pleasant surprise, Andy Diggle really manages to capture the environment of nerdiness that surrounds a comic book store, and creates in only a few pages a couple of really fascinating characters, plus a very intriguing mystery that involves mutilations and murders. Sandman and America’s Best Comics are two really great trades, including many stories by Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore, two of my most respected and admired writers ever. I haven't read Hellblazer in a while, the last issue I bought was # 250, and it was in the first DCBS package that arrived to Perú in 2010, the end of Vertigo's oldest series with issue # 300 certainly marks the end of an era. The conclusion is bitter and sad. So long John Constantine, you'll be missed. Finally, the February book I loved the most was Silver Surfer Parable, but I guess it doesn’t qualify as the “best of the month” since it was originally published in the late 80s. Still, it is Stan Lee and Moebius at their best. And now, without further ado, here are February comics. Which one of these would you like to see reviewed in length?

Con casi 20 cómics y 2 tomos recopilatorios tenía miedo de demorarme demasiado leyendo todo. En fin, contra todo pronóstico, mi cómic favorito del mes fue Young Avengers # 1 y de hecho le dedicaré una reseña completa. La conclusión de la miniserie de “Hit-Girl” fue muy interesante, y la conclusión de “Happy” fue muy intensa. Me encantó el tercer capítulo de “Witch Doctor”, tal vez la mejor miniserie de Image del momento. El primer ejemplar de “Snapshot” fue una muy agradable sorpresa, Andy Diggle se las arregla para capturar el ambiente nerd de una tienda de cómics, y crea sólo en unas pocas páginas un par de personajes más que fascinantes, además de un misterio que nos intriga, que involucra mutilaciones y asesinatos. “Sandman” y “America’s Best Comics” son dos tomos de primer nivel, que incluyen muchas historias de Neil Gaiman y Alan Moore, dos de mis más respetados y admirados escritores. No he leído Hellblazer en mucho tiempo, el último número que compré fue el # 250, y estuvo que el primer paquete de DCBS que llegó a Perú en el 2010, el fin de la serie más antigua de Vertigo con el ejemplar # 300 de hecho marca el fin de una era. La conclusión es amarga y triste. Hasta luego, John Constantine, serás extrañado. Por último, lo que más me gustó de febrero fue "Silver Surfer Parable", pero supongo que no califica como lo "mejor del mes" ya que la fecha original de publicación es de fines de los 80. Aún así, son Stan Lee y Moebius en su mejor momento. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, los dejo con los cómics de febrero. ¿Cuáles creen que deberían ser reseñados a conciencia?

I was watching Young Justice the other day, which I consider by far the best cartoon I've seen in over 15 years. And I remembered some of the guys that love postwhoring on message boards. We are like Kid Flashes or Impulses trying to outrun each other… or so it seems. But some of them were a bit confused about my avatar which, coincidentally, is the same one I use here.

I’m sure most people assume it is the Lord of Atlantis himself. Nothing illogical in that. Although, due to my age, I should have been closer to 90’s comics, here in Peru it was easier for me to get access to comic books published in Spain, however, for some reason, the only available stuff was from the 80s. So I am an expert of that era, not because I was born in a different date but because of, how should we put it, geographical accidents. It was like I had no other choice. So it was quite a shock, and a challenge, trying to catch up with years of issues that I had missed. It was so strange to get an issue of Superman printed in 1997 that my aunt would send me from New Jersey and read it and compare it to the last issue I had read, in Spanish, with a cover date of 1989.

And the same applies to 2000 AD, I think I have read not a single Prog published in the nineties, but I have a lot of issues from the early eighties and late seventies, and that’s what I like and reread the most, I just love it. So you could say I’m an honorary 80’s boy, and I’ll always be. Anyway, I would love to read old stuff, but since it is not a priority I keep saying I’ll buy a Marvel Masterworks next time I have fifty bucks to spare, and of course there is never such time. What I do want to buy is Barry Windsor Smith’s run in Conan, decades ago, I already have it all in trade paperback format but I want the original issues (although we are talking about an amount of money that is out of my possibilities).

And now off I go. Sunday it's election day over here. Or rather re-election. Or rather something else.

Es cierto que rara vez toco temas políticos aquí en el blog, pero no es por desidia ni indiferencia, sino simplemente porque siento que otros, como Augusto, pueden transmitir mejor que yo mensajes de esta índole. Apoyo a Susana Villarán y este domingo marcaré el NO. Espero que ustedes también. 

Por cierto, el martes de esta semana se realizó la Noche de Arte por Lima, en Dédalo. De manera rotunda, 24 de los artistas más importantes y prestigiosos del Perú expresaron su apoyo por Susana Villarán, donando sus cuadros generosamente. Rara vez hay muestras que congreguen al mismo tiempo figuras como la de Ramiro Llona, José Tola, Ricardo Wiese, Gerardo Chávez, Enrique Polanco, etc. Incluso, el mismo Eduardo Lores, quizás más conocido en su faceta como novelista, poeta o articulista de El Comercio, presentó un interesante cuadro que me hizo recordar su libro “Manía”, y eso fue justamente lo que le comenté en algún momento de la noche.

COSAS + vista interior desde mi oficina

Saludé a María Elena Fernández, y a artistas como Lorenzo Osores y Alfredo Alcalde. Como siempre, fue un gusto contar con la presencia de Anel Townsend, quien ha llevado de manera ejemplar la campaña del NO. Pablo Alayza, Rodrigo Cueto y otros chicos del Pestalozzi tocaron música en vivo, mientras iban llegando cada vez más y más invitados. Para mí fue especialmente divertido conversar con Sebastián Lores y Gabriel Lores y, sobre todo, con Arturo José Valdés Hamann, uno de mis grandes amigos del colegio a quien le perdí la pista por años y que recién ahora, o desde hace poco, vuelvo a reencontrar en eventos de este tipo. Como tenía que llegar temprano a COSAS al día siguiente, no pude quedarme hasta el final. Pero al menos estuve conversando con Arturo hasta que él y su enamorada se fueron.   

Avengers: the Children’s Crusade - Heinberg & Cheung

To be young and make mistakes is bad enough, to be a young superhero with the weight of the world on your shoulders and still make mistakes is even worse. In “Children’s Crusade”, everyone must make life changing decisions, sometimes they make the right call, sometimes the wrong one.  

When Iron Lad returns to the 21st century to save Wiccan’s life he knows he’s once again altering the future. He knows that in order for this reality to exist, he must turn into Kang the Conqueror as an adult and attack the original roster of Avengers. 

Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, is repudiated by the entire mutant community. After all, she ruined millions of lives by depowering 90% of the mutant population after the events of House of M and Decimation. Perhaps she has decided to let go of all that, and that would explain her amnesia. But in the end she recognizes Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd as her lost sons. 

The fight between Magneto and Dr. Doom in Latveria attracts the attention of the Avengers, the X-Men and even X-Factor. I remember how excited I was about the possibility of a crossover between X-Factor and the Young Avengers. After all, the two most important gay couples of the Marvel universe should have met by now. I’m talking about Wiccan / Hulkling and Rictor / Shatterstar. Peter David has explained many times that the relationship between these two characters had always been a “wink, wink, nudge, nudge” kind of thing, that’s why it made perfect sense for them to come out of the closet. I’ve been reading X-Factor for years, and one of my favorite elements of the title is the sensible and intense portrayal of the romantic life between Rictor and Shatterstar. Finally, I was overjoyed to see X-Factor and the Young Avengers under the same roof. And Rictor, perhaps out of bravery or simply out of desperation, allows himself to be the target of Wanda Maximoff’s mystic energies. And that is how he regains his mutant powers.   

When all the superheroes start fighting against Dr. Doom, who has access to the life force, the very force that turned the Scarlet Witch into the most powerful creature on Earth, all hell breaks loose. Iron Lad, in an act of fury annihilates the Vision and Stature dies. In the end, Iron Lad acts like Kang would, thus ensuring his future as the Avenger’s villain instead of the idealistic adventurer he had always wanted to be. The repercussions of the battle are hard, especially for the kids. 

I was talking about mistakes and regrets. Sure, I regret some of the choices I’ve made in my life. Instead of studying literature I should have studied economy, like some of my friends, and I’d be making ten times the money I make now. But these are minor regrets. And they are nothing compared to the biggest mistakes I made in my life, when I was a teenager. I was insecure, and I lacked the courage that I have somehow gained over the course of the years. I wasn’t brave enough to do the things I wanted to do, or to speak my mind when I had to. I missed opportunities, and my cowardice caused me too much pain.

So I understand Eli Bradley when he says he’s only 17 and he’s made a lot of mistakes. And of course he’ll make more, but his big mistake is to quit the team... to sacrifice action in pursuit of an unobtainable error-free way of life. But somehow it all makes sense, because when I was 17 I was also overrun by the temptation of quitting. And I know how that feels, and having Allan Heinberg writing these lines makes me remember those feelings. And that’s why I also understand Billy Kaplan’s depression. The curse of losing all optimism. I have also been depressed, and I’ve also secluded myself in the privacy of my room, unable to reconnect with the world outside. So reading the final chapter of the Children’s Crusade I experimented it all over again. All those difficult moments, all the hardships of growing up. And I wish I could travel back in time, just like Iron Lad had done, to tell my older self that things wouldn’t be so dismal in the future. 

Jim Cheung

Of course, this series wouldn’t have been so amazing without the top notch art of Jim Cheung. There are some unforgettable action scenes, like the fight in Latveria and the arrival of Iron Lad and the battle against an omnipotent Doctor Doom (which involves the X-Men, the Avengers and X-Factor). The double page spread that reunites the X-Men with the Avengers is also a great work of composition. But Cheung’s pencils also shine in more familiar settings, for instance, when the Young Avengers are sitting on a bench, just like a group of normal kids, and more especially when another couple of gay lovers –Rictor and Shatterstar– express their feelings for each other. And, of course, we also have the kiss between Billy and Teddy, a very touching scene of two boys expressing their love. And Jim Cheung sure was the perfect artist for this.

The return of Iron Lad / el regreso de Iron Lad

The moment Billy Kaplan and Teddy Altman kiss each other is historical. First, because it’s the first time in half a century that two underage gay boys kiss on the page of a Marvel comic. And second because this is a milestone of maturity. Heinberg’s characters have evolved so much that you end up connecting with them on unprecedented levels. You care for them as if they were actually alive. And you feel with them, and you relate to what they’re going through, and you remember how things were when you had that age. This is one of the biggest accomplishments writers can achieve. And this is why the Children’s Crusade will continue to have such a strong emotional impact on me. Forever.

X-Factor: Rictor & Shatterstar

Ser joven y cometer errores es bastante malo, ser un joven súper-héroe con el peso del mundo sobre tus hombros y encima cometer errores es incluso peor. En la "Cruzada de los niños", todos deben tomar decisiones de vida o muerte, a veces aciertan; otras veces, no.

Cuando Iron Lad regresa al siglo XXI para salvar la vida de Wiccan sabe que está alterando el futuro otra vez. Sabe que para que esta realidad exista, de adulto debe convertirse en Kang el Conquistador y atacar a la agrupación original de los Vengadores.

Wanda Maximoff, la Bruja Escarlata, es repudiada por toda la comunidad mutante. Después de todo, ella arruinó millones de vidas al quitarle los poderes al 90% de la población mutante después de los eventos de House of M y Decimation. Tal vez ha decidido olvidar, y por eso está con amnesia. Pero al final, ella reconoce a Billy Kaplan y Tommy Shepherd como sus hijos perdidos.

X-Men & Avengers

La pelea entre Magneto y Dr. Doom en Latveria atrae la atención de los Vengadores, los X-Men e incluso X-Factor. Recuerdo lo entusiasmado que estaba ante la posibilidad de un encuentro entre "X-Factor" y "Young Avengers". Después de todo, las dos parejas gays más importantes del universo Marvel ya tenían que haberse conocido. Estoy hablando de Wiccan / Hulkling y Rictor / Shatterstar. Peter David ha explicado muchas que la relación entre estos dos personajes siempre ha sido del tipo "guiños y guinos, pelliscones y pelliscones", por eso es que tenía perfecto sentido que ambos salieran del closet. He estado leyendo X-Factor por años, y uno de mis elementos favoritos es el sensible e intenso retrato de la vida romántica entre Rictor y Shatterstar. Finalmente, me emocionó mucho ver a los de X-Factor y a los Jóvenes Vengadores bajo el mismo techo. Y Rictor, tal vez de pura valentía o simplemente por desesperación, se presta para ser el objetivo de las energías místicas de Wanda Maximoff. Y es así como recupera sus poderes mutantes.

Everyone against Dr. Doom / todos contra el Dr. Doom

Cuando todos los súper-héroes empiezan a pelear contra el Dr. Doom, quien tiene acceso a la 'fuerza de la vida', la misma fuerza que transformó a la Bruja Escarlata en la criatura más poderosa de la Tierra, el infierno se desata. Iron Lad, en un acto de furia aniquila a Vision y Stature muere. Al fin, Iron Lad actúa como lo haría Kang, asegurando así su futuro como el villano de los Vengadores en lugar del aventurero idealista que siempre quiso ser. Las repercusiones de esta batalla son duras, en especial para los jóvenes. 

Young Avengers

Estaba hablando sobre errores y arrepen-timientos. De hecho que me arrepiento de algunas de las elecciones que hice en mi vida. En vez de estudiar literatura debería haber estudiado economía, como algunos de mis amigos, y estaría ganando diez veces el dinero que gano ahora. Pero estos son arrepentimientos menores. Y no son nada comparados a los más grandes errores que cometí en mi vida, cuando era un adolescente. Fui inseguro, y me faltaba el coraje que de algún modo he ganado con el paso de los años. No tuve la valentía necesaria para hacer las cosas que quise hacer, o para decir lo que pensaba. Me perdí oportunidades, y mi cobardía me causó demasiado dolor.

Así que entiendo a Eli Bradley cuando dice que él sólo tiene 17 años y ya ha cometido un montón de equivocaciones. Y por supuesto, cometerá más, pero su gran error es renunciar al equipo... sacrificar la acción en busca de un inalcanzable estilo de vida libre de errores. Pero de algún modo todo tiene sentido, porque cuando yo tenía 17 también fui asediado por la tentación de la renuncia. Y sé cómo se siente, y tener a Allan Heinberg escribiendo estas líneas me hace recordar esos sentimientos. Y es por eso que también comprendo la depresión de Billy Kaplan. La maldición de perder el optimismo. Yo también he estado deprimido, y me he enclaustrado en la privacidad de mi habitación, incapaz de reconectar con el mundo exterior. Así que al leer el capítulo final de "Children’s Crusade" lo experimenté todo de nuevo. Todos esos momentos difíciles, todos los dolores de crecer. Y desearía poder viajar en el tiempo, tal como lo hizo Iron Lad, para decirle a mi 'yo' anterior que las cosas no serían tan miserables en el futuro. 

Billy Kaplan & Teddy Altman: historical kiss / beso histórico

Por supuesto, esta serie no habría sido tan asombrosa sin el arte de primer nivel de Jim Cheung. Hay algunas escenas de acción inolvidables, como la pelea en Latveria y la llegada de Iron Lad y la batalla contra un omnipotente Doctor Doom (que involucra a los X-Men, los Vengadores y a X-Factor). La página doble que reúne a los X-Men con los Vengadores es también un grandioso trabajo de composición. Pero los lápices de Cheung también brillan en escenarios más familiares, por ejemplo, cuando los Jóvenes Vengadores están sentados en una banca, como un grupo común y corriente de chavales, y muy especialmente cuando otra pareja de amantes gays –Rictor y Shatterstar– expresan sus sentimientos el uno por el otro. Y, por supuesto, tenemos el beso entre Billy y Teddy, una escena muy conmovedora de dos chicos expresando su amor. Y Jim Cheung, sin duda, era el artista perfecto para ello.

El momento en el que Billy Kaplan y Teddy Altman se besan es histórico. Primero, porque es la primera vez en medio siglo que dos chicos gays menores de edad se besan en la página de un cómic de Marvel. Y segundo, porque este es un hito de madurez. Los personajes de Heinberg han evolucionado tanto que terminas conectando con ellos a niveles sin precedentes. Te preocupas por ellos como si estuvieran vivos de verdad. Y sientes lo que ellos sienten, y te identificas con lo que les pasa, y recuerdas cómo eran las cosas cuando tenías esa edad. Este es uno de los más grandes logros que un escritor puede alcanzar. Y es por eso que "Children’s Crusade" continuará produciendo en mí una sacudida emocional. Para siempre.
