Mark my words my minions, for you must memorize this mind-blowing moment. Meet… the marvelous month! Marvel at the massive mountain of Marvel mags and many more miscellaneous monthlies! The more, the merrier, eh?

Certainly August was Marvel's month for me (as well as the month of alliterations). But jokes aside, I must say that I'm enjoying MARVEL NOW a lot more than DC's insipid and clumsy attempts at relaunching their line. FF has been such a pleasant reading experience, but # 10 is the last issue for me. Young Avengers and Kick-Ass continue to amaze me. The first issue of Sidekick was even better than I hoped it would be (probably the best book of the month). I’ve heard nothing but good comments on Walt Simonson’s Thor so I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. Yeah, I know I said I would stop buying Uncanny Avengers when the new artist came on board, but those Cassaday covers are so great that I had to have them. Some friends told me to get Jason Aaron’s Thor, they said I would love it, and they were right! And Aaron’s Thanos Rising: good story and great art. I’ve been reading stories regarding the 9-11 tragedy, and I’ve felt deeply touched; sure, some stories are simplistic or too corny, but others are brilliant, others grab you by the throat and leave you breathless. I visited the Twin Towers in 2000, and seeing them destroyed one year later was a shock. Reading these stories, even after a decade, still makes me remember how I felt that morning on September 11, 2001.

Marcad mis palabras, mis secuaces, y memorizad este momento magistral. Mirad... ¡el maravilloso mes! ¡Maravillaos ante la magna montaña de Marvel y otros títulos mensuales! A mayor monto, más diversión, ¿eh?

Ciertamente, para mí agosto fue el mes de Marvel (así como el mes de las aliteraciones). Pero dejando las bromas a un lado, debo decir que estoy disfrutando  MARVEL NOW muchísimo más que el torpe e insípido relanzamiento de DC. "FF" ha sido una experiencia de lectura placentera, pero el # 10 es el último para mí. "Young Avengers" y "Kick-Ass" continúan asombrándome. El primer ejemplar de "Sidekick" fue incluso mejor de lo que esperaba (probablemente lo mejor del mes). He escuchado muchos buenos comentarios sobre el "Thor" de Walt Simonson así que estoy seguro que lo disfrutaré. Sí, ya sé que dije que no seguiría comprando "Uncanny Avengers" cuando cambiaron de artista, pero estas portadas de Cassaday son tan grandiosas que tenía que conseguirlas. Algunos amigos me dijeron que leyera el “Thor” de Jason Aaron, me dijeron que me gustaría ¡y tenían razón! Y “Thanos Rising” de Aaron: buena historia y muy buen arte. He estado leyendo historias sobre la tragedia del 11 de setiembre, y me he sentido profundamente conmovido; es cierto que algunas historias son simplonas o demasiado cursis, pero otras son brillantes, otras te agarran de la garganta y te dejan sin aliento. Visité las Torres Gemelas el 2000, y verlas destruidas un año después fue un shock. Leer estas historias, incluso después de una década, todavía me hace recordar cómo me sentí esa mañana del 11 de setiembre del 2001.

I spent many afternoons reading the melancholic “Martian Chronicles” by Ray Bradbury, marveling at the adventures of Isaac Asimov’s juvenile hero Lucky Starr, admiring the magic of Poul Anderson’s “The Broken Sword” or comparing military strategy in “Starship Troopers” by Robert A. Heinlein. Frank Herbert, Harlan Ellison, Brian Aldiss and many more came from the library and stayed with me long after I had finished their books.

But there was something special in Harlan Ellison’s case. Besides writing novels and short stories, he decided to write comic books as well. He did it for Marvel, writing a memorable Avengers issue (I was lucky enough to read it in a reprint decades after it was published) and he also did it for more independent publishers, “A Boy and his Dog”, illustrated by Richard Corben would be a good example. Harlan Ellison is no stranger to the 9th art, and as soon as I found out that he was writing “7 Against Chaos” I knew I had to read it.

And I did. I sat down on a comfortable couch and I was back to where I left all those years ago. Suddenly the rockets to Mars as described by Bradbury were back in the sky; Lucky Starr’s daring exploits in Jupiter, Pluto and the rest of the solar system were possible again. Because this original graphic novel never forgets, not even for one page, that the name of the game is adventure.   

Harlan Ellison is faithful to the classic sci-fi approach, and that’s why “7 Against Chaos” takes place in our solar system. In the future, Earth has colonized many planets, and some men are wealthy enough to buy an entire world, and others are so miserable that work like slaves. In many ways, it’s the logical consequence of today’s inequity in regards to wealth distribution. 

It’s in this distant tomorrow that a mysterious man must reunite 6 warriors, 6 unique individuals with special abilities and talents. They have no reasons to save Earth, the planet that has become too proud and too arrogant to grant them the rights and benefits they deserve. Even so Mourna, the 7-foot Amazon with claws instead of hands, Urr, the renegade robot, Tantalus, the insect man, Ayleen, a Venusian phoenix in search of a nobility title, Hoorn, the cat burglar that lost his face and Kenrus, the disgraced scientist famous for being a paranoid genius, are recruited by an enigmatic leader. 

Earth is about to be destroyed / la Tierra está a punto de ser destruída

The moon of Titan, the lands of Mars, the jungles of Venus, the mountains of Jupiter, every planet and every satellite are part of a fantastic journey, a space odyssey filled with action, adventure, danger and incredibly dramatic moments. Harlan Ellison not only imagines the necessary technology to survive in these worlds, but also the society, the practices and rituals that have evolved there. That’s a fascinating aspect that we rarely find in mainstream comics, where aliens are portrayed in very conventional ways. Comic book writers tend to rely too much on the fiction and too little on the science, but Ellison knows how to balance the fiction and the science.

I won’t spoil the story but I’ll say this: I enjoyed it, and it sure reminded me of my teenage years and the sci-fi books I was so keen on. But there’s something else that makes “7 Against Chaos” a very special project: Paul Chadwick. Easily one of my favorite American authors, Chadwick is a great artist but he’s even a greater writer (Concrete, his masterpiece, is a must read). If the narrative feels so agile is thanks to Chadwick’s art and his many marvelous pages. He has given each world a unique look, and his alien designs are a joy to behold. Finally, Ken Steacy does a wonderful job with the coloring.

DC Comics hasn’t produced anything that could appeal to me in the past 6 or 7 years (and I mean DC, not Vertigo). However, this time, they have surprised me. 7 Against Chaos may be one of the best original graphic novels of the year.

Human evolution in danger / la evolución human en peligro

Crecí soñando con otros mundos y otras formas de vida. La Tierra, por supuesto, no era suficiente. Tal vez sentía que la realidad era muy ordinaria. Confinado a un feo vecindario y a una existencia bastante convencional, necesitaba saber que había algo más, allá lejos, más allá de las estrellas.

Cuando estaba en secundaria fue obvio que otros compartían mis sentimientos. Había incluso escritores que también se habían sentido encerrados en nuestra sosa sociedad, y se habían aventurado en el espacio exterior armados únicamente con sus máquinas de escribir y su imaginación desenfrenada. Pasé muchas tardes leyendo las melancólicas "Crónicas marcianas" de Ray Bradbury, maravillándome con las aventuras de Lucky Starr, el héroe juvenil de Isaac Asimov, admirando la magia de "La espada rota" de Poul Anderson o comparando estrategias militares en "Tropas del espacio" de Robert A. Heinlein. Frank Herbert, Harlan Ellison, Brian Aldiss y muchos más salieron de la biblioteca y se quedaron conmigo mucho después de que yo hubiese terminado sus libros.

Pero había algo especial en el caso de Harlan Ellison. Además de escribir novelas y cuentos, él decidió que también escribiría cómics. Lo hizo para Marvel, escribiendo un memorable episodio de "Avengers" (tuve la suerte de leerlo en una reimpresión décadas después de que fuese publicado) y también lo hizo para editoriales más independientes “Un chico y su perro”, ilustrado por Richard Corben sería un buen ejemplo. Harlan Ellison no es ajeno al noveno arte, y apenas me enteré de que escribiría “7 Against Chaos” sabía que tenía que leerlo.

Y lo hice. Me senté en un cómodo sofá y regresé adonde me había quedado todos esos años atrás. Repentinamente, los cohetes a Marte descritos por Bradbury surcaban otra vez el cielo; las audaces proezas de Lucky Starr en Júpiter, Plutón y el resto del sistema solar eran posibles nuevamente. Porque esta novela gráfica nunca olvide, ni siquiera por una página, que lo esencial es la aventura.  

Harlan Ellison es fiel al enfoque clásico de la ciencia ficción, y es por ello que “7 contra el caos” ocurre en el sistema solar. En el futuro, la Tierra ha colonizado muchos planetas, y algunos hombres son tan adinerados que pueden comprar un mundo entero, y otros son tan miserables que trabajan como esclavos. En cierto modo, es la consecuencia lógica de la actual inequidad en la distribución de riqueza. 

Es en este mañana distante que un misterioso hombre debe reunir a 6 guerreros, 6 individuos únicos con habilidades y talentos especiales. Ellos no tienen ninguna razón para salvar la Tierra, el planeta que se ha vuelto demasiado orgulloso y demasiado arrogante para otorgarles los derechos y beneficios que merecen. Aun así Mourna, la amazona de 2 metros y medio con garras en vez de manos, Urr, el robot renegado, Tantalus, el hombre insecto, Ayleen, una fénix venusiana en búsqueda de un título nobiliario, Hoorn, el ladrón que perdió su rostro, y Kenrus, el científico desgraciado famoso por ser un genio paranoico, son reclutados por un enigmático líder.  

La luna de Titán, las laderas de Marte, las junglas de Venus, las montañas de Júpiter, cada planeta y cada satélite son parte de este fantástico viaje, una odisea espacial llena de acción, aventura, peligro y momentos increíblemente dramáticos. Harlan Ellison no sólo imagina la tecnología necesaria para sobrevivir en estos mundos, sino también la sociedad, las prácticas y rituales que han evolucionado allí. Ese es un aspecto fascinante que rara vez encontramos en cómics de difusión masiva, en los que los aliens son retratados de modo muy convencional. Los escritores de cómics tienden a apoyarse mucho en la ficción y muy poco en la ciencia, pero Ellison sabe cómo equilibrar la ficción y la ciencia.

Mankind's histoy can be altered / la historia de la humanidad puede ser alterada

No revelaré las sorpresas de la historia pero diré esto: la disfruté, y vaya que me hizo rememorar mis años de adolescencia y los libros de ciencia ficción que tanto me gustaban. Pero hay algo más que hace de “7 Against Chaos” un proyecto muy especial: Paul Chadwick. Quizás uno de mis autores estadounidenses favoritos, Chadwick es un gran artista pero es incluso un mejor escritor ("Concrete", su obra maestra, es de lectura obligatoria). Si la narrativa se siente tan ágil es gracias al arte de Chadwick y sus muchas páginas maravillosas. Le ha dado a cada mundo una apariencia única, y sus diseños alienígenos son dignos de contemplar. Finalmente, Ken Steacy hace un gran trabajo con el coloreado.

DC Comics no ha producido nada que me atraiga en los últimos 6 o 7 años (y quiero decir DC, no Vertigo). Sin embargo, esta vez, me han sorprendido. "7 Against Chaos" bien puede ser una de las mejores novelas gráficas originales del año.

Sex - Joe Casey & Piotr Kowalski

What's cooking in Simon Cooke's head? As a protagonist, he seems to be quite hermetic. He spent years of his life fighting against crime as the Armored Saint, a costumed vigilante. But those days are now in the past. And he must find a way to redefine his existence without the adrenaline of his superhero life. 

We’ve probably read many stories about retired superheroes, but what Joe Casey is trying to do here is something different. He’s basically trying to answer one simple question: could someone like Batman adapt to a normal life as the CEO of the city’s largest corporation? Simon Cooke is now in charge of his company, a business that had been unattended during his years as the Armored Saint. Fiscal plans, investment opportunities, meetings with shareholders, it all becomes rather tedious for Simon. Perhaps the only way to escape from all of that is fantasizing about sex.

But the question here, and that’s the subtle level of perversity Joe Casey has created for this book, is why fantasize about sex instead of having sex? Why the richest man in the city decides to pay not for sex but rather for a voyeuristic exercise? Indeed, he pays two prostitutes to act as a couple of horny lesbians. But he just sits there and watches… and watches. Eventually, the hookers get nervous: “Hey asshole --you gonna jerk off or what?”, they yell at him. But Simon’s sexual repression is too strong, he can’t have sex, he can’t even feel comfortable with masturbation.  

Simon visits the most exclusive sex club of Saturn City, and not even the “Community Lounge” gets him horny. While dozens of men and women participate in a wild orgy, Simon only looks at them with curiosity and a certain degree of contempt. On the other hand, the woman who was the equivalent of Catwoman uses a vibrator to stimulate her vagina while she reminisces the way she was chased down by the Armored Saint. 

We never know what’s going on inside Simon Cooke’s head. But we can make some assumptions after listening to his words: “I just don’t know what the hell I’m doing half the time. It’s like I’m sleepwalking through all the things that ‘normal’ people do. Something about this city… I was going to save it. Now I’m just… someone who lives here”. 

And Simon’s problems keep getting bigger. He rejects the ‘complimentary’ prostitute he gets, he rejects all possibility of sex almost as severely as he rejects his heroic past. But Saturn City is a corrupted metropolis, and sooner or later, chaos will erupt. 

I had no idea who Piotr Kowalski was. So before paying for “Sex” I googled him and I liked what I found. And he does a great job here, specializing in double page spreads that immediately capture our attention. The architecture of Saturn City is very original, and the sex scenes are highly erotic and dynamic. Brad Simpson’s solid colors are the ideal complement to Piotr’s lines. 

I’ve tremendously enjoyed the opinion section / letter column: 3 pages devoted to Joe Casey’s reflections about the comic book industry: “The current, editorially-driven approach to corporate comic books, the 'writers room' mentality that the creators involved claim to embrace (but, seriously, what choice do they have? You wanna play with the toys, you play by their rules), does little to bring out the idiosyncratic work that was a hallmark of Stan Lee's classic 60s writing or Marvel's 2nd generation of confused --and drug infused-- brilliance in the 70s or even Dick Giordano's 'try anything'-ethos of DC in the 80s. Instead, it promotes 'focus tested' --and very often bloodless-- takes on otherwise great characters. Writers and artists become interchangeable within the corporate system”.

I should also highlight the work of Sonia Harris, a graphic designer who adds a very sophisticated touch to “Sex”. Finally, Rus Wooton (The Walking Dead’s letterer) does an outstanding job here, choosing a font that is unusual for American comics but quite common in Europe (personally, it reminds me of Alfonso Font’s handwriting). Evidently, aesthetics are essential here, but isn’t that also essential when it all comes down to… sex?

¿Qué es lo que hierve dentro la cabeza de Simon Cooke? Como protagonista parece ser bastante hermético. Durante años combatió el crimen como el Santo de la Armadura, un vigilante enmascarado. Pero esos días han quedado en el pasado. Y él debe encontrar un modo de redefinir su existencia sin la adrenalina de su vida como superhéroe. 

Probablemente hemos leído muchas historias sobre superhéroes retirados, pero lo que Joe Casey intenta hacer aquí es algo diferente. Básicamente, intenta responder una simple pregunta: ¿Podría alguien como Batman adaptarse a la vida normal del CEO de la mayor corporación de la ciudad? Simon Cooke ahora está a cargo de su compañía, un negocio que no ha sido atendido durante sus años como el Santo de la Armadura. Planes fiscales, oportunidades de inversión, reuniones con los accionistas, todo se vuelve bastante tedioso para Simon. Tal vez su única forma de escapar es fantasear sobre sexo.

Pero la pregunta aquí, y ese es el sutil nivel de perversidad creado por Joe Casey, es ¿por qué fantasear sobre sexo en vez de tener sexo? ¿Por qué el hombre más rico de la ciudad decide pagar no por sexo sino por un ejercicio de voyerismo? De hecho, paga a dos prostitutas para que actúen como una pareja de lesbianas calentonas. Pero él nada más se sienta y mira... y mira. Eventualmente, las rameras se ponen nerviosas: “Oye imbécil --¿te vas a pajear o qué?”, le gritan. Pero la represión sexual de Simon es demasiado fuerte, no puede tener sexo, ni siquiera se siente cómodo con la masturbación.  

Simon visita el club de sexo más exclusivo de Ciudad Saturno, y ni siquiera el "salón comunal" lo pone cachondo. Mientras docenas de hombres y mujeres participan en una salvaje orgía, Simon apenas los ve con curiosidad y un cierto grado de desdén. Por otro lado, la mujer que era la equivalente a Catwoman usa un vibrador para estimular su vagina mientras recuerda la forma en la que era cazada por el Santo de la Armadura.

Nunca sabemos qué es lo que se cuece en la cabeza de Simon Cooke. Pero podemos hacer algunas suposiciones después de escuchar sus palabras: “No sé qué demonios estoy haciendo casi todo el tiempo. Es como si caminara sonámbulo a través de las cosas que hace la gente ‘normal’. Es algo sobre esta ciudad... Iba a salvarla. Ahora sólo soy... alguien que vive aquí”. 

Y los problemas de Simon aumentan. Él rechaza a la prostituta 'de regalo' que le mandan, él rechaza toda posibilidad de sexo casi tan severamente como rechaza su pasado heroico. Pero Ciudad Saturno es una metrópolis corrompida, y tarde o temprano, el caos hará erupción.

No tenía ni idea de quién era Piotr Kowalski. Así que antes pagar por “Sex”, lo busqué en Google y me gustó lo que encontré. Y él hace un gran trabajo aquí, especializándose en páginas dobles que inmediatamente capturan nuestra atención. La arquitectura de Ciudad Saturno es muy original, y las escenas de sexo son muy eróticas y dinámicas. Los colores sólidos de Brad Simpson son el complemento ideal para las líneas de Piotr.

He disfrutado tremendamente la sección de opinión / columna de cartas: 3 páginas dedicadas a las reflexiones de Joe Casey sobre la industria del cómic: “El enfoque actual, manejado editorialmente, de los cómics corporativos, la mentalidad de la  'sala de escritores' que los creadores involucrados tanto claman adorar (pero, en serio, ¿qué opción les queda? Si quieres jugar con los juguetes, sigues esas reglas), ayuda poco para generar el trabajo idiosincrático que fue el distintivo de la clásica escritura sesentera de Stan Lee o la brillantez confundida --y drogo-imbuida-- de la segunda generación setentera de Marvel o incluso el ethos de 'intentar lo que sea' de Dick Giordano en la DC ochentera. En su lugar, el enfoque actual promueve interpretaciones 'de rumbo probado' --y muy a menudo sin potencia-- sobre personajes que, bajo otras circunstancias, serían grandiosos. Los escritores y artistas se vuelven intercambiables dentro del sistema corporativo”.

También debería resaltar el trabajo de Sonia Harris, una diseñadora gráfica que añade un toque muy sofisticado a “Sex”. Finalmente, Rus Wooton (el rotulista de "The Walking Dead") hace un trabajo sobresaliente, eligiendo una fuente inusual para los cómics estadounidenses pero bastante común en Europa (personalmente, me recuerda a la caligrafía de Alfonso Font). Evidentemente, la estética es esencial aquí, pero ¿no es también esencial cuando todo se trata de... sexo?

Swamp Thing # 46, 47 & 48 - Moore, Bissette, Totleben & Woch

The red skies gleam on the horizon, time melts as different eras amalgamate with each other, the weather patterns all over the globe have gone crazy. The end is nigh. And Alan Moore forces us to see the extent of the damage: “Something was eating the sky. Everyone who’s ever hoped to be long dead by doomsday looked up, and the feeling in their stomachs was just as they’d always known it would be”. 

“Revelations” (published in Swamp Thing # 46, March 1986) begins as a Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover and ends up on a very disturbing note. In 1986, DC Comics set about the difficult mission of streamlining their heroes. Crisis on Infinite Earths was the first mega-event conceived to alter the status quo (“Worlds will live. Worlds will die. And the DC Universe will never be the same”). 

In “Revelations”, Swamp Thing and John Constantine are transported to the Monitor’s satellite, where every superhero of the DC Universe has been summoned. Thousands of characters “a surreal and glimmering mardi gras of costumes… and semblances too strange… to be costumes” heed the call of Alexander Luthor. Earth, the galaxy, the entire universes and all parallel realities and dimensions are about to be destroyed. And every hero must play its role. Alexander Luthor holds a brief but meaningful audience with Swamp Thing and John Constantine. Others will take care of the preservation of Earth in the physical plane, but saving the spiritual plane is a priority. 

The final three pages are a masterwork of the horror genre, as Sister Ann Marie –one of Constantine’s associates– looks for help in the most awful neighborhoods of London. Something tells her she’s being followed. Then she takes the subway, and still she’s being hunted. Trapped in a subterranean station, she must do everything she can to escape from the shadows. She runs, but she knows she can’t outrun death. Stephen Bissette and John Totleben capture the claustrophobic essence of the subterranean, the feeling of entombment; with profound black lines and large shadows, they meticulously carve the face of the nun –an old woman– and make her look even more wrinkled. We could say that Bissette and Totleben are kings of the realm of the night, but in the initial pages of “Revelations” it’s clear that they also rule in the realm of the day: their portrayal of hordes of clean and shiny superheroes is stunning, their interpretation of the young Alexander Luthor is both dazzling and faithful to the original George Pérez version. 

When John Constantine appeared for the first time, he promised Swamp Thing knowledge. And now he finally fulfills his promise in “The Parliament of Trees” (April 1986). Charles Shaar Murray, in the prologue makes the following statement: “‘The Parliament of Trees’ with its taut, raging dissection of the intimate connections between voyeurism and puritanism, sows the first seeds of the explosion which will carry Swamp Thing –and Abby– far beyond the climax of ‘American Gothic’”. Deep in a South-American forest, there is a place inhabited by other elemental creatures, they’ve been there for centuries and they were all once like Swamp Thing. Full of questions, Swamp Thing lets his roots grow near to the roots of the other elementals, and he establishes a dialogue with them mediated neither by the sound of voice nor the rationale of humans. Nevertheless, the Parliament of Trees rejects Swamp Thing. “They were creatures… like me… like me… and they cast me out”. Artists Stan Woch and Ron Randall reproduce the beauty of nature and together create exquisite designs that combine the human anatomy with the shape of trees.

“A Murder of Crows” is the conclusion of the American Gothic saga. Everything has been leading up to this final confrontation with the forces of the Brujería. John Constantine had orchestrated his plan and forced Swamp Thing to travel across the nation to face the undiluted presence of evil for one reason: so that he might be prepared to fight against a secret cult that intends to conquer the spiritual plane. 

Most of Constantine’s colleagues have been murdered, but those who have survived travel with him to the Patagonia, to the cave where the Brujería is hidden. But nothing goes according to plan, Swamp Thing and John Constantine barely escape alive. The mission is a complete failure. Meanwhile, back in Louisiana, a newspaper has run a photography that shows a naked Abigail being intimate with a creature of the swamp. Accused of being a sex offender, she’s fired from her job and arrested immediately afterwards.


Although in previous chapters we’ve seen John Totleben focusing only on inking, in “A Murder of Crows” he proves to be every bit as genius in his capacity of penciler, adding richly detailed textures to Swamp Thing’s body, sculpting figures in the dark as if they were made out of clay, showing us the horror of the cave and the human remains while concealing other aspects (and thus igniting our imagination). Totleben’s dynamism and panel arrangement also deserve as much praise as possible. 

The Parliament of Trees / El parlamento de los árboles

Los cielos rojos surcan el horizonte, el tiempo se derrite mientras diferentes eras se amalgaman entre sí, los patrones climáticos enloquecen en todo el mundo. El fin está cerca. Y Alan Moore nos obliga a ver la extensión del daño: "Algo estaba comiéndose el cielo. Todos los que habían esperado morir mucho antes del día del apocalipsis miraron hacia arriba, y la sensación en sus estómagos era justo como supieron siempre que sería".

“Revelaciones” (publicado en Swamp Thing # 46, marzo de 1986) empieza como un crossover de las Crisis en Tierras Infinitas y termina de manera muy perturbadora. En 1986, DC Comics emprendió la difícil tarea de reestructurar a sus héroes. Crisis en Tierras Infinitas fue el primer mega-evento concebido para alterar el status quo ("Mundos vivirán. Mundos morirán. Y el Universo DC nunca volverá a ser el mismo").

En “Revelaciones”, la Cosa del Pantano y John Constantine son transportados al satélite del Monitor, allí han sido convocados todos los superhéroes del universo DC. Miles de personajes “un carnaval surreal y luminoso de disfraces... y apariencias demasiado extrañas... para ser disfraces” obedecen la llamada de Alexander Luthor. La Tierra, la galaxia, universos enteros y todas las realidades y dimensiones paralelas están a punto de ser destruidas. Y cada héroe debe desempeñar un rol. Alexander Luthor tiene una breve pero significativa audiencia con la Cosa del Pantano y John Constantine. Otros se encargarán de preservar la Tierra en el plano físico, pero salvar el plano espiritual es una prioridad.

Las tres páginas finales son una obra maestra del género de terror, la hermana Ann Marie –una de las aliadas de Constantine– busca ayuda en los barrios más horribles de Londres. Algo le dice que está siendo seguida. Entonces toma el metro pero sigue siendo acechada. Atrapada en una estación subterránea, ella deberá hacer todo lo que pueda para escapar de las sombras. Corre, pero sabe que no puede correr más rápido que la muerte. Stephen Bissette y John Totleben capturan la esencia claustrofóbica del subterráneo, la sensación de estar en una tumba; con líneas negras profundas y largas sombras, tallan meticulosamente la cara de la monja -una anciana- y la hacer ver aún más arrugada. Podríamos decir que Bissette y Totleben son reyes del reino de la noche, pero en las páginas iniciales de “Revelaciones” queda claro que también dominan el reino del día: es estupendo el retrato de las hordas de limpios y relucientes superhéroes, y la interpretación del joven Alexander Luthor es asombrosa y fiel a la versión original de George Pérez.

Inside the cave of the Brujería / Dentro de la cueva de la Brujería

Cuando John Constantine apareció por primera vez, le prometió a la Cosa del Pantano conocimiento. Y ahora finalmente cumple su promesa en "El parlamento de los árboles" (abril 1986). Charles Shaar Murray, en el prólogo, afirma lo siguiente: “‘El parlamento de los árboles’ con su firme y furibunda disección de las conexiones íntimas entre voyerismo y puritanismo, planta las primeras semillas de la explosión que llevará a la Cosa del Pantano –y a Abby– mucho más allá del clímax de ‘American Gothic’”. En la profundidad de una selva sudamericana, hay un lugar habitado por otras criaturas elementales, han estado allí durante siglos y todos fueron como la Cosa del Pantano alguna vez. Lleno de preguntas, la Cosa del Pantano deja que sus raíces crezcan cerca de las raíces de los otros elementales, y establece un diálogo con ellos que no es desvirtuado por la voz ni por la racionalidad humana. No obstante, el parlamento de los árboles rechaza a la  Cosa del Pantano. "Ellos eran criaturas... como yo... como yo... y me han abandonado". Los artistas Stan Woch y Ron Randall reproducen la belleza de la naturaleza y juntos crean diseños exquisitos que combinan la anatomía humana con la forma de los árboles.

"Un asesinato de cuervos" es la conclusión de la saga American Gothic. Todo confluye en la confrontación final con las fuerzas de la Brujería. Constantine ha fraguado un plan y ha obligado a la Cosa del Pantano a viajar a lo largo de la nación para enfrentarse a la presencia indisoluble del mal con un objetivo: para que pueda prepararse para la pelea contra un culto secreto que pretende conquistar el plano espiritual.

Muchos de los colegas de Constantine han sido asesinados, pero aquellos que sobreviven viajan con él hasta la Patagonia, a la cueva donde se oculta la Brujería. Pero nada va de acuerdo al plan, la Cosa del Pantano y John Constantine apenas escapan con vida. La misión es un completo fracaso. Mientras tanto, en Luisiana, un periódico ha publicado una fotografía que muestra a una Abigail desnuda en un momento de intimidad con una criatura del pantano. Acusada de ser una depravada sexual, es despedida de su trabajo y velozmente arrestada. 

Aunque en capítulos previos hemos visto a John Totleben enfocándose solamente en el entintado, en "Un asesinato de cuervos" demuestra que es más que genial en su capacidad como dibujante a lápiz, añadiendo texturas ricamente detalladas al cuerpo de la Cosa del Pantano, esculpiendo figuras en la oscuridad como si estuviesen hechas de arcilla, mostrándonos el horror de la cueva y los restos humanos mientras oculta otros aspectos (encendiendo así nuestra imaginación). El dinamismo de Totleben y la distribución de viñetas también merecen todos los elogios posibles.
