Sidekick # 1, 2 & 3 - J M Straczynski & Tom Mandrake

If you’ve read superhero comics then you’re familiar with the “sidekick” term, pejorative for some, sardonic for others and always –or at least most of the time– controversial. Batman and Robin, Flash and Kid Flash, Green Arrow and Speedy, Aquaman and Aqualad, etc. When grownups work side by side with young boys, the public gets suspicious. And I’m not talking metaphorically. This actually happened over half a century ago, when psychiatrist Fredric Wertham wrote his “Seduction of the Innocent”; he considered American comic books as a pestilent poison that would rot the minds of young readers across the nation.

In fact, in 1954 Wertham affirmed that Batman wasn’t simply a caped crusader and Robin wasn’t simply his protégée. They were the “wish dream of two homosexuals living together […] in sumptuous quarters, unencumbered by wives and girlfriends, with only an aged butler for company”. Clearly, for generations there has been a running joke about the sexual orientation of the dynamic duo. Why would an adult ask a young boy to dress in tights? Why would a single man spend so much time with a naïve kid? How can a superhero justify child exploitation? (even if we forget the sexual innuendo, there are still laws about child labor and clearly having Robin working as a sidekick way past his bedtime would scandalize a social worker or two).

We’re in 2013 and Wertham’s weight can still be felt. Because of him the comic book industry yielded to censorship, and for decades any and all sexual references were muffled or scrubbed away like a dirty bed sheet soiled with bodily fluids. Joe Michael Straczynski embraces that note of scandal, of rebelliousness against the senseless ramblings of an idiotic shrink. And what Straczynski does is, precisely, to explore the themes no mainstream superhero writer would ever dare to approach. Sidekick is a disturbing story of “madness and mayhem, darkness and depravity”.

It all begins with brighter and happier days… Red Cowl –Sol City’s premiere superhero– saves the city assisted by his loyal sidekick, Flyboy. Later, in a parade held in his honor, Red Cowl is murdered by a sniper. Flyboy, enraged, swears to find the man behind this foul crime and bring him to justice. But time goes by, and he has no success in his mission. 

Red Cowl –just like Batman– had a fancy car, a criminology laboratory, state of the art technology and miniaturized gadgets. But after his death, Flyboy realizes that his mentor had been accumulating large unpaid sums of money for years. In the end, the mansion is all that’s left and even that must be put on sale to pay the remaining debts. Without dollars or resources, Flyboy tries to stay in the business. But being a superhero is an expensive occupation. And his campaign to raise funds on Dreamstater –a parody of the popular crowd funding site– is a resounding failure.

Flyboy’s situation keeps getting worse. Losing his boyish charm means that he can no longer be a sidekick, and that’s what he discovers when he applies to work with other superheroes. No one takes him seriously, no one respects him. And that’s more than evident. Depressed, confused and frustrated, he does things that he would have never imagined in his days as a teenaged adventurer. I think he hits rock bottom when he pretends to endorse the city code against prostitution and vice when, in reality, he uses that as a pretext to get a free blow job from a fat and rundown hooker. 

And then one day the disheartened sidekick answers a call from Joan Darling, the Red Cowl’s girlfriend. She’s convinced that the popular superhero is still alive, and her empathic powers seem to be proof enough for Flyboy. Hope is that last thing that one loses, and Flyboy runs to find Professor Tannenbaum, America’s brightest mind. However, the Professor destroys all his hopes and mocks him: “It’s understandable given how close you two were. And you were, weren’t you? Very close, that is […] A young man, impressionable, star-struck, mentored by a charismatic hero… it’s only natural”.

Perhaps some of you are wondering why Flyboy is accused of being either a hero’s gay lover or a victim of sexual abuse. The parallels between Straczynski’s characters and Batman and Robin are evident. This is intentional, of course, and it compels readers to make comparisons with the dynamic duo, Wertham’s favorite target: “The Batman type of story may stimulate children to homosexual fantasies”, wrote Wertham, “Only someone ignorant of the fundamentals of psychiatry and psychopathology of sex can fail to realize the subtle atmosphere of homoeroticism which pervades the adventures”. 

And speaking of atmospheres, this new series wouldn’t be the same without veteran artist Tom Mandrake, a master of heavy inks and deep shadows that portrays these heroes and antiheroes under the best possible light. From the cheerful and colorful past to the bleak and dark present, Mandrake’s artistic ability will surely delight all readers.

So you didn’t like sidekicks? Fair enough. I guess they’re something of an acquired taste. I must confess, though, that the reason I love sidekicks is the possibility of scandal. For me, every sidekick is a juicy gossip, whispered across the city –any city, even Sol City– and the never-ending questions: what does an adult want from a young boy? Why a mature adventurer would spend so much time with a kid in tights? What is the dirty secret shared by a single man and a naïve teen? These questions sure enraged good old Frederic Wertham, who simply hated the Batman and Robin relationship. But whereas this paladin of censorship felt threatened, I feel delighted. What can I say? I’m a sucker for any and all homoerotic subtexts. But that’s not the reason why I bought Sidekick. Half a century after Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent”, American readers are apparently just as afraid of sex in comics as they used to be. Sex is still a big NO in mainstream superhero comics (and an even bigger No if it includes sidekicks…). But I knew this new series would explore forbidden subjects with intelligence and subtlety. I must say, after reading the first issue, I’m not disappointed (in fact, I’m thrilled to have preordered Sidekick up to issue # 4!). And Joe, I must say congratulations for bravely facing that which scares traditional fanboys the most: sexual innuendo! “It’s going to be wonderful. Also deeply disturbing”, you wrote. And I totally agree with it. Oh, and the other reason why I picked up issue # 1? Tom Mandrake! He’s such an amazing artist! Go easy on the sidekicks Joe, after all, where would the comic book industry be without them?

JMS: Issue of sexuality and power and society's perception of both run through pretty much all of the media, and comics are no exception, which is one reason why we touched upon the oft-whispered innuendo associated with sidekicks in issue two. We want to take some of that and explore more deeply to see where it takes us... which us why in our story instead of the domineering male character it's Julia Moonglow, the female character, who is the powerful one and in charge in terms of sex. That dynamic gets even more unusual once we discover that she's... well, that's another story for another time.

Si han leído cómics de superhéroes, entonces estarán familiarizados con los jóvenes aliados que ayudan al héroe adulto, en inglés el término es “sidekick”; para algunos es una palabra peyorativa, para otros sardónica y siempre -o al menos la mayoría de las veces- controversial. Batman y Robin, Flash y Kid Flash, Green Arrow y Speedy, Aquaman y Aqualad, etc. Cuando los adultos trabajan lado a lado con jovencitos, resulta sospechoso. Y no lo digo metafóricamente. De hecho, hace más de medio siglo el psiquiatra Fredric Wertham escribió “La seducción del inocente”; él consideraba que los cómics estadounidenses era un veneno pestilente capaz de podrir las mentes de los menores de edad a lo largo de la nación.

De hecho, en 1954, Wertham afirmó que Batman no era simplemente un justiciero enmascarado y Robin no era simplemente su protegido. Ellos era el “sueño de deseo de dos homosexuales viviendo juntos […] en residencias suntuosas, sin ser estorbados por esposas o enamoradas, con un mayordomo envejecido como única compañía”. Claramente, por generaciones ha habido una broma recurrente sobre la orientación sexual del dúo dinámico. ¿Por qué un adulto le pediría a un chiquillo que se vista con un traje tan ceñido? ¿Por qué un solterón pasaría tanto tiempo con un muchacho ingenuo? ¿Cómo puede un superhéroe justificar la explotación infantil? (incluso si olvidamos la insinuación sexual, aún quedan las leyes sobre trabajo infantil; y, claramente, hacer que Robin labore como sidekick pasada la medianoche escandalizaría a más de un trabajador social.

Estamos en el 2013 y el peso de Wertham todavía se puede sentir. A causa de él, la industria del cómic se rindió ante la censura, y durante décadas todas las referencias sexuales fueron acalladas o desinfectadas como una sábana sucia, manchada de fluidos corporales. Joe Michael Straczynski asume esa nota de escándalo, de rebeldía en contra de los balbuceos sin sentido de un psiquiatra imbécil. Y lo que hace Straczynski es, precisamente, explorar los temas que ningún escritor de superhéroes convencionales se atrevería a abordar. Todo empieza en los días felices del ayer... Red Cowl –el primer superhéroe de Sol City– salva la ciudad ayudado por leal sidekick, Flyboy. Después, en un desfile organizado en su honor, Red Cowl es asesinado por un francotirador. Flyboy, enfurecido, jura encontrar al culpable de este terrible crimen para entregarlo a la justicia. Pero el tiempo pasa, y su misión no tiene éxito. 

Red Cowl –al igual que Batman– tenía un carro lujoso, un laboratorio de criminología, tecnología avanzada y artefactos miniaturizados. Pero después de su muerte, Flyboy descubre que su mentor había estado acumulando grandes deudas durante años. Al final, mansión es todo lo que queda e incluso eso debe ponerse a la venta para liquidar las deudas pendientes. Sin dólares ni recursos, Flyboy intenta mantenerse en el negocio. Pero ser un superhéroe es una ocupación costosa. Y su campaña para recaudar fondos en Dreamstater –una parodia de la conocida página de financiamiento colectivo– es un sonoro fracaso.

La situación de Flyboy sigue empeorando. Al perder su encanto juvenil ya no es capaz de ser el sidekick de otros héroes, constatar este hecho es un duro golpe para él. Nadie lo toma en serio, nadie lo respeta. Y eso es más que evidente. Deprimido, confundido y frustrado, hace lo que jamás hubiese hecho en sus días como aventurero juvenil. Cae hasta el fondo cuando finge apoyar la norma de la ciudad contra la prostitución y el vicio cuando, en realidad, la utiliza como un pretexto para recibir sexo oral gratis a manos de una prostituta gorda y deteriorada. 

Y luego un día el descorazonado sidekick contesta la llamada de Joan Darling, la enamorada de Red Cowl. Gracias a sus poderes empáticos, ella está convencida de que el popular superhéroe sigue vivo. La esperanza es lo último que se pierde, Flyboy corre para encontrar al profesor Tannenbaum, la mente más brillante de Norteamérica. Sin embargo, el profesor destruye sus esperanzas y se mofa de él: “Es comprensible teniendo en cuenta lo íntimos que eran ustedes dos. Y lo eran, ¿no es así? Muy íntimos, quiero decir […] Un jovencito, impresionable, ingenuo, educado por un héroe carismático… es totalmente natural”.

Tal vez alguno de ustedes se esté preguntando por qué Flyboy es acusado de ser el amante gay del héroe o una víctima de abuso sexual. Los paralelos entre los personajes de Straczynski y Batman y Robin son evidentes. Esto es intencional, desde luego, y obliga a los lectores a hacer comparaciones con el dúo dinámico, el blanco favorito de Wertham: “El tipo de historia de Batman podría estimular a los niños hacia fantasías homosexual”, escribió Wertham, “Sólo un ignorante de los fundamentos de la psiquiatría y la psicopatología del sexo pueden fallar en detectar la sutil atmósfera de homoerotismo que permea estas aventuras”.

Y hablando de atmósferas, esta nueva serie no sería la misma sin el veterano artista Tom Mandrake, un maestro de las tintas densas y las sombras profundas que retrata a estos héroes y antihéroes bajo la mejor luz posible. Desde el alegre y colorido pasado hasta el miserable y oscuro presente, la habilidad artística de Mandrake seguramente deslumbrará a todos los lectores.

¿Así que no te gustan los sidekicks? Vale. Supongo que son algo así como un gusto adquirido. Aunque debo confesar que la razón por la que amo a los sidekicks es la posibilidad del escándalo. Para mí, cada sidekick es un chisme jugoso, susurrado a lo largo de la ciudad –cualquier ciudad, incluso Sol City– y las preguntas sin fin: ¿qué es lo que un adulto quiere con un niño? ¿Por qué un aventurero maduro pasaría tanto tiempo con un chiquillo en mallas? ¿Cuál es el sucio secreto compartido por un solterón y un adolescente ingenuo? Estas preguntas sin duda enfurecían al viejo Frederic Wertham, quien simplemente odiaba a la relación entre Batman y Robin. Pero mientras este paladín de la censura se sentía amenazado, yo me siento extasiado. ¿Qué puedo decir? El subtexto homoerótico siempre me llama la atención. Pero esa no es la razón por la que compré "Sidekick". Medio siglo después de “La seducción del inocente” de Wertham, los lectores estadounidenses aparentemente tienen tanto miedo del sexo en un cómic como antes. El sexo sigue siendo un gran NO en los cómics de superhéroes de difusión masiva (e incluso un No aún mayor si es que incluye a los sidekicks…). Pero sabía que esta nueva serie exploraría asuntos prohibidos con inteligencia y sutileza. Debo decir que después de leer el primer número, no estoy decepcionado (de hecho, estoy alegre por haber comprado anticipadamente Sidekick hasta el # 4). Y  Joe, debo decir felicitaciones por enfrentar valientemente aquello que tanto asusta a los fans tradicionales: ¡la insinuación sexual! “Va a ser maravilloso. También profundamente perturbador”, escribiste. Y estoy totalmente de acuerdo con ello. Oh, ¿y la otra razón por la que compré el # 1? ¡Tom Mandrake! Él es un artista asombroso. No seas tan duro con los sidekicks Joe, después de todo, ¿dónde estaría la industria del cómic sin ellos?

JMS: Los temas de sexualidad y poder, y la percepción de ambos en la sociedad están presentes en todos los medios, y los cómics no son la excepción. Esa es una de las razones por las que tocamos la tan susurrada insinuación asociada con los sidekicks en el número dos. Queremos tomar algo de ello y explorarlo más a fondo para ver dónde nos lleva... Por es que en nuestro historia en vez del macho dominante es Julia Moonglow, el personaje femenino, quién tiene el poder y quien está a cargo en términos sexuales. Esta dinámica será incluso más inusual una vez que descubramos que ella es... bueno, esa es una historia para otra oportunidad.

Paradax - Peter Milligan & Brendan McCarthy

Paradax (Al Cooper) 

You are a young superhero. You enjoy drinking beer and having sex with your girlfriend. But youth isn’t a synonym of happiness. After all, you need money in your wallet to buy that beer or impress your girl. In 1984, Peter Milligan and Brendan McCarthy came up with a very audacious concept: a working-class superhero.

Paradax wasn’t a famous journalist like Clark Kent or a rich businessman like Tony Stark. He was never meant to be an inspirational figure or an example of virtue. This was a character that defied the status quo: 30 years ago, superheroes were supposed to be model citizens, clean, good and honest –and, of course, in their secret identities, successful professionals. 

For decades, the superhero genre had always embraced a very strict set of rules. Superheroes were supposed to act in certain ways, they were supposed to be altruistic, brave and decent. Well, Milligan decided to say ‘sod off’ to the old regime; it was time to implement a new one.    

Paradax’s secret origin isn’t a tragic event (no parents or relatives are murdered) or a spectacular accident (no radioactive explosions). Al Cooper simply finds a yellow suit –forgotten by one of his passengers– in the back seat of his taxi. Curious, of course, he tries it on. He immediately knows that it might be ill-advised to walk down Christopher Street –a place visited mostly by gay men– wearing such a skin tight costume. But even in a “regular” street he is mocked and ridiculed.

Al’s girlfriend suggests a new look. And so he wears a jacket and jeans on top of his yellow suit (curiously this look has been imitated by hundreds of superheroes in the 80s and 90s). But obviously he doesn’t go out to patrol the streets or prevent bank assaults. He simply stays indoors, in his messy and dirty apartment, having sex with his girlfriend and drinking beer. 

Al Cooper realizes that the suit gives him the power to phase through solid objects. And that means he could make a fortune stealing bank vaults. In the end, however, he’s convinced by his girlfriend and his manager that he could earn more money as a legitimate superhero. And thus, the adventures of Paradax begin.

There are some similarities between Milligan’s Paradax and Grant Morrison’s Zenith (the ‘jacket’ look, the youthfulness, the chrematistic interest, the antihero approach). Milligan’s whimsical proposal relies heavily on satire and parody, whereas Morrison intends to deconstruct the superhero mythos and to reinvent it under a different light (much like Alan Moore did with Miracleman in the 80s).

Brendan McCarthy pencils, inks and colors Paradax. His pages are a psychedelic party that never ends. McCarthy transfers movement and a very special rhythm to this young hero, without forgetting the importance of sensuality. Yes, sex is a big part of this title, and that is made clear since the beginning. There is such a powerful irreverence in McCarthy’s designs and in Paradax’s unexpected acts: pissing on the street or opening a can of beer (the eruption of foam is like a metaphor for ejaculation) or simply wearing underwear that no honorable superhero –not even the champions of having underclothing outside their pants– could tolerate.

“Paradax erupted from left field, scruffily iconoclastic and filled with the joie de vivre of an earlier comic book age. Paradax behaved like a hooligan in fancy dress getting drunk at a somber black-tie event”. I totally agree with this. Although short lived, Paradax is pure life; perhaps, like those famous rock stars that die young, Al Cooper was doomed to outshine all others and finally be consumed. I don’t know how Milligan does it, but he makes us recover that longing for a more exciting life. Al Cooper isn’t a rock star, though; he spends most of his time doing what any other guy of his age would do. It’s all very quotidian and yet very rich. And I guess that proves that the weirdest settings are those that are closest to us: the most exotic land a superhero can inhabit is his own filthy couch in the middle of a smelly and untidy room.

Eres un joven superhéroe. Disfrutas tomando una cerveza y follando con tu enamorada. Pero la juventud no es sinónimo de felicidad. Después de todo, necesitas dinero en tu billetera para comprar esa cerveza o impresionar a tu chica. En 1984, Peter Milligan y Brendan McCarthy desarrollaron un concepto muy audaz: un superhéroe de la clase obrera. 

Paradax no era un periodista famoso como Clark Kent o un rico hombre de negocios como Tony Stark. No era una figura que sirviese de inspiración, ni un ejemplo de virtud. Este era un personaje que desafiaba el statu quo: hace 30 años, se suponía que los superhéroes debían ser ciudadanos modelos, hombres limpios, buenos y honestos –y, por supuesto, en sus identidades secretas, profesionales exitosos. 

Por décadas, el género superheroico se había aferrado a reglas muy estrictas. Los superhéroes debían actuar de cierta manera, debían ser altruistas, valientes y decentes. Bueno Milligan decidió decirle al viejo régimen 'a tomar por culo'; ya era hora de implementar algo nuevo.

El origen secreto de Paradax no es un evento trágico (no hay padres o familiares asesinados) o un accidente espectacular (no hay explosiones radioactivas). Al Cooper simplemente encuentra un traje amarillo –olvidado por uno de sus pasajeros– en el asiento trasero de su taxi. Curioso, por supuesto, se lo prueba. Y de inmediato se da cuenta que no sería apropiado pasear por la Calle Christopher –un lugar merodeado sobre todo por gays– usando un atuendo tan apretado. Pero incluso en una calle "normal" la gente se burla de él y lo ridiculiza. 

Al Cooper & Kopper Keen

La enamorada de Al le sugiere un nuevo look. Así que él se pone una chaqueta y unos jeans encima del traje amarillo (curiosamente, este look ha sido imitado por cientos de superhéroes en los 80 y 90s). Pero obviamente él no sale a patrullar por las calles ni a prevenir asaltos de banco. Él simplemente se queda bajo techo, en su desordenado y cochino departamento, y tiene sexo con su enamorada y toma cerveza.

Al Cooper descubre que el traje la da el poder de atravesar objetos sólidos. Y eso significa que podría ganar una fortuna robando las bóvedas de los bancos. Al final, sin embargo, su enamorada lo convence para que gane dinero como un superhéroe legítimo. Y de este modo, comienzan las aventuras de Paradax.

Hay algunas similitudes entre el Paradax de Milligan y el Zenith de Grant Morrison (el look ‘chaqueta’, la juventud, el interés crematístico, el enfoque antihéroe). La irónica propuesta de Milligan se apoya firmemente en la sátira y en la parodia, mientras que Morrison intenta deconstruir el mito del superhéroe y reinventarlo bajo una luz diferente (tal como hizo Alan Moore con Miracleman en los 80).

Brendan McCarthy dibuja a lápiz, entinta y colorea Paradax. Sus páginas son una fiesta psicodélica que nunca termina. McCarthy transfiere movimiento y un ritmo muy especial a este héroe juvenil, sin olvidar la importancia de la sensualidad. Sí, el sexo es parte esencial de este título, y eso resulta claro desde el inicio. Hay una irreverencia tan poderosa en los diseños de McCarthy y en los inesperados actos de Paradax: mear en la calle o abrir una lata de cerveza (la erupción de la espuma es como una metáfora de la eyaculación) o simplemente usar calzoncillos que ningún honorable superhéroe–ni siquiera los campeones de llevar la ropa interior encima de los pantalones– podría tolerar.

“Paradax erupcionó desde el campo de la izquierda, desaliñadamente iconoclasta y lleno de un joie de vivre propio de las eras tempranas del cómic. Paradax se comportaba como un hooligan en un traje de gala emborrachándose en un sombrío evento de corbatas negras”. Estoy totalmente de acuerdo. Aunque de corta duración, Paradax es vida pura; tal vez, como esas famosas estrellas de rock que murieron jóvenes, Al Cooper estaba condenado a deslumbrar a todos y finalmente ser consumido. No sé cómo Milligan lo logra, pero nos hace recuperar ese anhelo por una vida más excitante. Aunque Al Cooper no es una estrella de rock; de hecho, pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo haciendo lo que haría cualquier chico de su edad. Todo es muy cotidiano y, no obstante, muy rico. Y supongo que eso demuestra que los escenarios más extraños son aquellos que nos resultan más cercanos: la tierra más exótica que puede habitar un superhéroe es su propio sofá mugriento en medio de una maloliente y desordenada habitación. 

Young Avengers # 10 - Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie

For most people, Mother’s Day is a happy occasion, albeit slightly smeared by the corporate interests of the greeting cards industry. For the Young Avengers, on the other hand, Mother’s Day is the most miserable moment of the year. 

Mother, the inter-dimensional demon accidentally summoned by Billy (Wiccan) is still at large. And that means the Young Avengers are still in danger. One of my favorite pages shows just how ferocious this devilish woman can be: she devours a caption. I love the way in which Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie have pushed the boundaries of the fourth wall, and this is a clever example of the narrative style they have developed in earlier issues. 

Gillen finally starts showing us that Loki isn’t the sweet kid we thought he was (although, seriously, how sweet can the god of mischief be?). He has been plotting all along. Poisoning the mind of Billy and making Teddy (Hulkling) feel insecure about his boyfriend. By effectively ruining the loving relationship between these two boys, Loki is manipulating Billy’s existence, just enough so that his destiny as the galaxy’s mightiest demiurge might be fulfilled. “Imagine all realities as a deck of cards, and you with the hands born to shuffle”, says Thor’s brother.

The conversation between Loki and the demoniac Mother is especially revealing. But Leah’s presence is also an interesting turn of events. Now, I must confess I have never read Gillen’s Journey Into Mystery, but I understand is one of Marvel’s best series of recent years, and I think I understand why. The mystery between Leah of Hel and Loki of Asgard was fully explored in Journey Into Mystery, but it’s also present in these pages.

Now Leah has deceived Teddy. She has convinced him that he needs a “special group therapy”. And when Teddy agrees to be a part of one of these highly unorthodox counseling sessions, he runs into an old acquaintance of Ms. America, three Marvel Boy’s ex-girlfriends (a Kree female, a human girl and Oubliette, the Exterminatrix) and the evil Patriot that kidnapped Speed in issue # 6. Teddy realizes he has willingly walked into a trap, and what is worse, after weeks of being weakened by Leah’s powerful magical enchantments, he can no longer break free. 

Every month, the first book I read is Young Avengers. I’m always very excited to find out what has happened. And every month there is a great cliffhanger that leaves me completely surprised. And then I impatiently wait an entire month to read the next issue. This time, however, not only the cliffhanger was unexpected but the whole poker game, there isn’t one card that trumps the other but rather a combination of cards that will turn any reader into a compulsive gambler. I’m already betting on what might be some of the possible outcomes.

Of course, the end of the second volume of Young Avengers wouldn’t have been as impressive without the superb art of Jamie McKelvie. Through his immaculate and symbolic designs, McKelvie blurs gender lines and mocks male superiority. Perhaps this is made evident in one particular moment of rage, in which Teddy turns into Hulkling and literally rips off not only his t-shirt (as the original Hulk always did) but also his pants (luckily for him, beneath his regular clothes he’s wearing his unstable molecules costume, so nudity is avoided). McKelvie’s drawings also play on contemporary anxieties about sexual expression (and repression).

Loki manipulate Billy's mind / Loki manipula la mente de Billy

Para la mayoría de las personas, el día de la madre es una ocasión feliz, aunque ligeramente mancillada por los intereses corporativos de la industria de tarjetas de saludos. Para los Jóvenes Vengadores, por el contrario, el día de la madre es el momento más miserable del año.

Madre, el demonio inter-dimensional invocado accidentalmente por Billy (Wiccan) sigue en libertad. Y eso significa que los Jóvenes Vengadores aún están en peligro. Una de mis páginas favoritas muestra qué tan feroz es esta diabólica mujer: ella devora un cuadro de texto. Me encanta la manera en la que Kieron Gillen y Jamie McKelvie han empujado las fronteras de realidad y ficción, y este es un ejemplo muy astuto del estilo narrativo que han desarrollado en números anteriores.

Gillen finalmente empieza a mostrarnos que Loki no es el dulce niño que habíamos pensado que era (aunque, en serio, ¿qué tan dulce puede ser el dios de los engaños?). Él ha estado conspirando todo este tiempo. Envenenando la mente de Billy y haciendo que Teddy (Hulkling) se sienta inseguro con su enamorado. Al arruinar la relación entre estos dos chicos, Loki está manipulando la existencia de Billy, lo suficiente para que se cumpla su destino como el más poderosos demiurgo de la galaxia. “Imagina todas esas realidades como un mazo de cartas, y a ti como las manos nacidas para barajarlas”, dice el hermano de Thor.

La conversación entre Loki y la demoniaca Madre es especialmente reveladora. Pero la presencia de Leah es también un giro interesante. Debo confesar que nunca he leído Journey Into Mystery de Gillen, pero entiendo que es una de las mejores series de Marvel de los últimos años, y creo que sé por qué. El misterio entre Leah de Hel y Loki de Asgard fue explorado por completo en Journey Into Mystery, pero también está presente en estas páginas.

Hulking rips off his pants / Hulkling destroza sus pantalones

Leah ha engañado a Teddy. Ella lo ha convencido de que necesita una "terapia grupal especial". Y cuando Teddy acepta ser parte de estas sesiones tan poco ortodoxas, se encuentra con un viejo conocido de Ms. America, con tres ex-enamoradas de Marvel Boy (una hembra Kree, una chica humana y Oubliette, la Exterminatrix) y con el malvado Patriot que secuestró a Speed en el número 6. Teddy se da cuenta de que caído voluntariamente en una emboscada, y lo que es peor, después de semanas de ser debilitado por los poderosos hechizos de Leah, ya no es capaz de huir.

Cada mes, lo primero que leo es Jóvenes Vengadores. Siempre me emociona saber qué ha pasado. Y todos los meses quedo impaciente por saber qué sucederá en la próxima entrega. Y hay que esperar todo un mes. Esta vez, sin embargo, no sólo la última escena fue inesperada sino todo el juego de póker; no hay una carta que le gane a las demás sino, más bien, una combinación de cartas que convertirán a todos los lectores en apostadores compulsivos. Yo ya estoy apostando sobre cuáles podrían ser algunos de los desenlaces posibles.

Por supuesto, el final del segundo volumen de los Jóvenes Vengadores no habría sido tan impresionante sin el soberbio arte de Jamie McKelvie. A través de sus diseños inmaculados y simbólicos, McKelvie difumina las líneas de género y se burla de la superioridad masculina. Tal vez esto se hace evidente en un particular momento de ira, en el que Teddy se convierte en Hulkling y literalmente destroza no sólo su camiseta (tal como siempre pasaba con el Hulk original) sino también sus pantalones (afortunadamente para él, debajo de sus ropas está usando su uniforme de moléculas inestables, así que la desnudez logra evitarse). Los dibujos de McKelvie también juegan con las ansiedades contemporáneas en relación a la expresión (y represión) sexual.

October comic books / cómics de octubre

While you were out there celebrating Halloween, I was a happy prisoner of a veritable mountain of good comics! Some were simply good (Night of the Living Dead, New Mutants), others were very good (Thor: God of Thunder) and others were a masterpiece (Sandman: Endless Nights). I had a wonderful triple dose of Quitely: Sandman: Endless Nights (it’s so great that I had to mention it at least twice), Jupiter’s Legacy (I must write about it on a future post) and Earth 2 (Morrison’s story is very impressive and those Quitely pages are gorgeous). I hadn’t read any good Jeph Loeb comic in the past decade or so, but I enjoyed these issues of Nova, I don’t know if the protagonist (Sam) is Jeph’s homage to his own deceased son (Sam Loeb), but I certainly liked the idea of a kid following his father’s example (in real life Sam Loeb wrote comics just like his father did). I had fun with the reprint of the classic Wally Wood’s Thunder Agents. And I got bored with Wood’s Ultimate X-Men. But if I talk only about new releases, what I probably enjoyed the most this month was the first issues of Three (Gillen is quickly becoming one of my favorite new British writers) and Sex Criminals (by far, my favorite Matt Fraction creator-owned property… I don’t know why, but I was very disappointed by Fraction’s Casanova and Satellite Sam; and for a long time I thought he was only good writing Iron Man, FF or Defenders for Marvel but turns out that Sex Criminals is a brilliant series with a very seductive concept). And now, without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations.

Mientras ustedes estaban celebrando Halloween, yo era un feliz prisionero de una verdadera montaña de buenos cómics. Recibí una maravillosa dosis triple de Quitely: Sandman: Endless Nights (es tan grandioso que tenía que mencionarlo al menos dos veces), Jupiter’s Legacy (le dedicaré un post dentro de poco) y Earth 2 (la historia de Morrison es muy impresionante y las páginas de Quitely son preciosas). No había leído ningún cómic bueno de Jeph Loeb en la última década, pero disfruté con estos números de Nova, no sé si el protagonista (Sam) es un homenaje de Jeph a su propio hijo fallecido (Sam Loeb), pero ciertamente me gustó la idea de un chiquillo que sigue el ejemplo de su padre (en la vida real Sam Loeb escribió cómics al igual que su padre). Me divertí con la reimpresión del clásico Thunder Agents de Wally Wood. Y me aburrí con los Ultimate X-Men de Wood. Pero si sólo hablara de nuevas entregas, probablemente lo que más disfruté este mes fueron los primeros números de Three (Gillen rápidamente se está convirtiendo en uno de mis nuevos escritores británicos favoritos) y Sex Criminals (de lejos, mi creación original favorita de Matt Fraction... no sé por qué, pero me decepcionó mucho el Casanova de Fraction y su Satellite Sam; y por mucho tiempo pensé que él solamente era bueno escribiendo Iron Man, FF o Defenders para Marvel pero resulta que Sex Criminals es una serie brillante con un concepto muy seductor). Y ahora, sin mayores preámbulos, ahí van los cómics de octubre.
