Eternals and the Marvel anthology continue to be good. Of course Doctor Doom has been the greatest title from Marvel in quite a while. I’m enjoying Space Bastards and I’m absolutely loving the hardcover edition of Byrne’s Superman. However, if I had to choose, my favorite comic of the month would be Strange Adventures # 8. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations:

CROSSED TP VOL 06 (MR)

(W) Garth Ennis & Various (A) Raulo Caceres, Miguel Ruiz (CA) Raulo Caceres. In a volume that spans several eras of Crossed infection, we join three prolific writers each telling a tale set in the horrifying misery of the world during the plague. DOCTOR DOOM #8

After regaining his throne, Doctor Doom presses his advantage and invades Symkaria with the intent to conquer and annex the entire nation. And with the Ultimate Nullifier in hand, he’s able to keep the entire world at bay while he declares total war on the country that tried to overthrow him. Once the dust settles, he realizes he’s humanity’s last hope for preventing an unstable black hole from annihilating all of Earth.

DOCTOR DOOM #9

After growing the Latverian empire through bloodshed, Doom turns his attention to the potential apocalypse that is the black hole in Earth’s orbit, as he’s the only brilliant scientific mind left that has any chance of preventing catastrophe. “Eternals” y la antología “Marvel” mantienen un buen nivel. Por supuesto, “Doctor Doom” ha sido el mejor título de Marvel en bastante tiempo. Estoy disfrutando “Space Bastards” y me encanta la edición en tapa dura del Superman de Byrne. Sin embargo, si tuviera que elegir, mi cómic favorito del mes sería "Strange Adventures # 8". The Punisher # 5-8 (2000) - Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon

Garth Ennis’ Punisher has a considerable amount of blood, viscera, bullets and dead people. And yet, despite all this violence, the Irish writer manages to include hearty doses of black humor, enough to make the audience laugh out loud. Characters like the useless detective Soap provide a much needed comic relief, but the interaction between the Punisher and his neighbors is also hilarious, after all, he lives in a miserable building inhabited by marginalized and abnormal individuals. 

Against all odds, Ma Gnucci is the only survivor of the Central Park Zoo battle. This old woman, however, has been severely mutilated as we can see in “Even Worse Things” (originally published in The Punisher vol. 5 # 5, August 2000). Frank Castle’s actions as the Punisher are not only striking fear in the hearts of criminals but also inspiring more than one copycat. In a catholic church, a priest has started murdering men after he hears their confession, in an exclusive neighborhood, a man that names himself Elite has started killing those who might bring down the value of properties in such a rich area; and finally Mr. Payback is killing executives and businessmen that are sacrificing the wellbeing of the people in order to maximize profits.

Ma Gnucci

In “Spit Out of Luck” (The Punisher # 6, September 2000), Ma Gnucci finally discovers where Punisher lives and sends a death squad. Taken by surprise, Frank Castle kills as many of them as he can, but he’s injured in the process. Meanwhile, lieutenant Molly Von Richthofen has joined the task force led by detective Soap, but now that all the Punisher copycats are on every news channel, their work is getting even more complicated. 

Payback

Those who saw the movie “The Punisher” (2004) will remember the rundown building that Frank Castle called home and the sordid neighborhood in which it was located, as well as the unusual and miserable collection of people that were Frank’s neighbors. All of this, of course, was based on Ennis’ miniseries, and when the neighbors help Punisher in the movie, that also comes from the pages of “Bring Out Your Dead” (The Punisher # 7, October 2000).

Elite

Frank Castle is still recovering from his wounds in “Desperate Measures” (The Punisher # 8, November 2000), and he’s also surprised to see how easily his neighbors accepted that he was in fact the Punisher but also how much they’re willing to sacrifice in order to protect him. Meanwhile, Ma Gnucci gets in touch with the Russian, a deadly mercenary who promises to kill Frank Castle. 

Mafia

Ennis’ shocking scripts come to life thanks to the strong, moody and irresistible artwork of Steve Dillon. Of course, Tim Bradstreet’s hyper-realistic style gives us a very human Punisher in every cover, a man always surrounded if not engulfed by shadows, almost as if admitting that he has long lost his battle with his own dark side.

El Punisher de Garth Ennis tiene una cantidad considerable de sangre, vísceras, balas y muertos. Y sin embargo, a pesar de toda esta violencia, el escritor irlandés logra incluir abundantes dosis de humor negro, suficientes para hacer reír a carcajadas al público. February films / películas de febrero

I only saw 2 new movies in February, and then re-watched 2 of my old favorites (expect a similar combination in future months). John Lee Hancock writes and directs The Little Things (2021), a realistic thriller about two police detectives, Denzel Washington and Rami Malek, who are investigating several connected homicides. Soon they find a possible suspect: Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club). Unlike other more conventional productions, this one is all about the details: “it’s the little things that get you caught”. And evidently, this isn’t the typical situation of cops chasing and capturing the bad guy. One of the protagonists is dealing with a terrible trauma from his past, while the other is slowly descending into his inner dark side. However, the relationship they have with the suspect is perhaps the most memorable aspect of this harrowing tale of crime and death. The unexpected ending somehow fits in perfectly with the overall tone of The Little Things.

King Jack (2015), written and directed by Felix Thompson, is a fascinating coming of age story that revolves around Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete), a teenager who spends most of his time jerking off and fantasizing with the most attractive girls, while trying to run away from the school bully. When his cousin, Cory Nichols, unexpectedly shows up and spends a few days with the family, the two boys become good friends; however, at the same time, the violent behavior of the school bully intensifies, as well as the treacherous nature of a certain student that has been demanding (and obtaining) naked pictures from the protagonist. Thompson succeeds in presenting to us the life of a poor kid living in a poor town, but above all, the recklessness of a teenager who wants to act like a grownup when in so many ways he’s still a child. Superb performances, a dramatic and coherent script and beautiful cinematography turn this into an amazing film!

Written and directed by Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko (2001) has amassed cult following and become a contemporary classic. Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) is an awkward teenager who goes to therapy and takes pills, but continues to be marginalized by his fellow classmates. However, when the protagonist starts having unusual visions involving a sinister human-sized rabbit his life changes; he is still ridiculed by his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and he’s still obsessed with the beautiful Jena Malone, but suddenly he has an instinctive urge to explore those visions. The cast includes other amazing actors such as James Duval and Patrick Swayze. When an airplane turbine destroys part of his house in a completely mysterious accident that no one can explain, a series of time paradoxes are set in motion. I had seen Donnie Darko 20 years ago, and now that I re-watched it I enjoyed it even more, and of course it deserves a place in my list of the best 100 films ever. Kelly masterfully combines the conflicts and insecurities of adolescence with the always riveting notion of time travel, while building complex and relatable characters. Something that I found particularly touching this time is the way in which sacrifice and love are intertwined in this temporal odyssey. Dark comedy, romance, science fiction and suspense are smoothly blended in this unforgettable film. 

Mary Harron directs American Psycho (2000), based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel. A groundbreaking film and a true contemporary classic, American Psycho is both a critique and an exploration of the greedy and hedonistic lives of a group of young and successful Wall Street executives. The protagonist is Christian Bale (American Hustle), in one of his most remarkable roles ever: a 27-year old man obsessed with preserving his youth and excellent physical conditions, and a man who must compete with his peers constantly, to the point that no matter what, he is never satisfied or relaxed. As the protagonist says, there is nothing human inside of him, only “greed and disgust”, which we can see in the way he insults and humiliates homeless people, only to kill them after. And when he feels that Jared Leto is becoming more successful than him, he ends up murdering his colleague in a very brutal way. American Psycho is a disturbing film that might cause nightmares not because there are monsters or supernatural creatures in it, but on the contrary, because we get a really close look at people in charge of Wall Street, people constantly surrounded by luxury and whose apathy and loathing of those they consider inferiors is more than evident, the real horror here is not in the fiction aspect but in just how real it all feels. The protagonist, of course, doesn’t stop with just one murder, and the killing spree soon goes out of control. The all-star cast includes Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon (Devil’s Knot) and Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth).

Sólo vi 2 películas nuevas en febrero, y luego volví a ver 2 de mis viejas favoritas (esperen una combinación similar en próximos meses). John Lee Hancock escribe y dirige The Little Things (2021), un thriller realista sobre dos detectives, Denzel Washington y Rami Malek, que están investigando varios homicidios relacionados entre sí. Pronto encuentran un posible sospechoso: Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club). A diferencia de otras producciones más convencionales, esta tiene que ver con los detalles: "son las pequeñas cosas con las que te atrapan". Y evidentemente, esta no es la situación típica de policías persiguiendo y capturando a un mal tipo. Uno de los protagonistas está lidiando con un terrible trauma de su pasado, mientras que el otro desciende lentamente hacia su lado oscuro interno. El protagonista, por supuesto, no se detiene con un sólo asesinato, y la ola de matanzas pronto se sale de control. El reparto estelar incluye a Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon (Devil’s Knot) y Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth).

As the curator of Marvels Snapshots, Kurt Busiek gathered an impressive lineup of talented creators. I was familiar with all of them except the creative team behind “And the Rest Will Follow” (originally published in X-Men: Marvels Snapshots, November 2020), but once again Busiek proves to have a good eye for new talent, as Jay Edidin and Tom Reilly produce an extraordinary tale about the past of Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops.

Alex Ross

As Samantha Riedel explains, Edidin is a “Trans journalist” who is “sparking change in the comics industry”, and so it makes perfect sense for Edidin to focus on the X-Men, a title that has become famous over the decades as a metaphor for racism and homophobia, because in the end, mutants are human beings, discriminated by ‘normal’ people, thus embodying the consequences of prejudice.

As a writer Edidin has the ability of combining different origin stories into one sweeping narrative. Simply reading the first page made me realize I was in front of something rather special. It starts with a description, 4 people are about to take off, they’re flying, and suddenly, something happens, a terrible accident. For every Marvel fan out there, this might bring back to mind the origin of the Fantastic Four; however, this is also what happened to Scott Summers. Mr. and Ms. Summers along with their children Scott and Alex suffer an accident while flying a small airplane. 4 and 4, the equation was always there, in plain view. 

Tom Reilly

It amazes me that no other writer before had connected the dots, and in this story Edidin does it wonderfully. As a lonely orphan, separated from his brother Alex, Scott tries to find something that will help him guide his life, but it isn’t until he sees the public debut of the Fantastic Four when he feels a strong connection with this group of heroes that he has only seen on TV. Inspired by Reed Richards, Scott Summers slowly starts to transform his life. And the first encounter between the smartest man in the world and the lonely teenager is written in such a way that reminds us that, no matter how lost we feel, there is always someone out there that can help us come to terms with who we are. Tom Reilly’s artwork conveys all the necessary emotions, while providing at the same time very down-to-Earth sequences, that will help us ground the story. The colors by Chris O’Halloran are exceptional. And Alex Ross’ striking cover shows us not the frightened teenager but rather the courageous leader of the X-Men, wearing his popular 90s costume.

Howard Chaykin, veteran writer, penciler and inker, does everything except the coloring (by Jesus Aburtov) in “Dutch Angles” (Spider-Man: Marvels Snapshots, December 2020). Here a small time crook finds it incredibly difficult to commit crimes in New York, especially now that Spider-Man has become the city’s protector. You’ve probably heard that crime doesn’t pay, and it pays even less in a city overflowing with superheroes. I really liked the premise but the final result could’ve been better. In any case, I absolutely love the cover, Alex Ross shares with us an iconic pose of the arachnid hero.

Estaba familiarizado con todos ellos excepto el equipo creativo detrás de "Y el resto seguirá" (publicado originalmente en X-Men: Marvels Snapshots, noviembre del 2020), pero una vez más Busiek demuestra tener buen ojo para los nuevos talentos, y es que Jay Edidin y Tom Reilly producen una historia extraordinaria sobre el pasado de Scott Summers, también conocido como Cyclops.

Como explica Samantha Riedel, Edidin es un(a) "periodista trans" que está "provocando un cambio en la industria del cómic", por lo que tiene mucho sentido que Edidin se centre en los X-Men, un título que se ha hecho famoso a lo largo de las décadas como metáfora del racismo y la homofobia, porque al final, los mutantes son seres humanos, discriminados por la gente 'normal', de esta manera quedan encarnadas las consecuencias del prejuicio.

Como escritor(a), Edidin tiene la capacidad de combinar diferentes historias de origen en una narrativa amplia. La simple lectura de la primera página me hizo dar cuenta de que estaba frente a algo bastante especial. Comienza con una descripción, 4 personas están a punto de despegar, están volando y, de repente, sucede algo, un terrible accidente. Para todos los fanáticos de Marvel, esto podría recordarles el origen de los Cuatro Fantásticos; sin embargo, esto también es lo que le sucedió a Scott Summers. El Sr. y la Sra. Summers junto con sus hijos Scott y Alex sufren un accidente mientras volaban en un pequeño avión. 4 y 4, la ecuación siempre estuvo a la vista de todos.

Me asombra que ningún otro escritor antes haya conectado los puntos, y en esta historia Edidin lo hace maravillosamente. Como un huérfano solitario, separado de su hermano Alex, Scott intenta encontrar algo que lo ayude a guiar su vida, pero no es hasta que ve el debut público de los Cuatro Fantásticos cuando siente una fuerte conexión con este grupo de héroes que sólo ha visto en la tele. Inspirado por Reed Richards, Scott Summers poco a poco comienza a transformar su vida. Y el primer encuentro entre el hombre más inteligente del mundo y el adolescente solitario está escrito de tal manera que nos recuerda que, no importa cuán perdidos nos sintamos, siempre hay alguien que puede ayudarnos a aceptar quiénes somos. El arte de Tom Reilly transmite todas las emociones necesarias y, al mismo tiempo, proporciona secuencias muy realistas que ayudan a darle cimientos a la historia. Los colores de Chris O’Halloran son excepcionales. Y la sorprendente portada de Alex Ross nos muestra no al adolescente asustado, sino al valiente líder de los X-Men, vestido con su popular traje de los 90s.

Howard Chaykin, escritor veterano, dibujante y entintador, hace todo menos el coloreado (a manos de Jesús Aburtov) en “Ángulos ladeados” (Spider-Man: Marvels Snapshots, diciembre del 2020). Aquí, a un delincuente de poca monta le resulta increíblemente difícil cometer delitos en Nueva York, especialmente ahora que Spider-Man se ha convertido en el protector de la ciudad. Probablemente hayáis escuchado que el crimen no paga, pero vaya que paga aun menos en una ciudad repleta de superhéroes. Me gustó mucho la premisa, pero el resultado final podría haber sido mejor. En cualquier caso, me encanta la portada, Alex Ross comparte con nosotros una pose icónica del héroe arácnido.
