Legends of the Dark Knight Annual # 4 - Augustyn, Waid, Staton & Ottolini

 “In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places -some that have existed, and others that can't, couldn’t or shouldn’t exist. The result is stories that make characters who are as familiar as yesterday seem as fresh as tomorrow”. In 1994, as a way of promoting the new label Elseworlds, DC Comics decided to have all annuals as Elseworlds stories, and there is a Superman one that I particularly love, done by John Byrne and which hopefully I'll get to review at some point.

But in the meantime I will review “Citizen Wayne”, which is the annual number 4 of Batman Legends of the Dark Knight. It was written by Brian Augustyn and Mark Waid, who in the early and mid-90s used to work together a lot, in titles such as Flash and Impulse. The penciler of Citizen Wayne is veteran artist Joe Staton, who became famous for his long standing contributions to Green Lantern, he was always a very capable and effective storyteller; however, here his art reaches a whole new level of beauty and it is all thanks to the inks of Italian artist Horacio Ottolini. We can see in every page a unique energy and contrast of shadows, pitching blackness against at seemingly scruffy lines. The Italian inker enhances the pencils, in the hands of a less capable inker, Staton’s faces would have looked rough and perhaps the bodies would have looked stiff; however Ottolini adds a very palpable feeling of not only movement but also grace, and that is present in every single one of the figures that we see on the page, as well as very unique and subtle touches that only an extremely accomplished artist like Ottolini could have pulled off.

Created in 1938 Batman was around almost at the same time that Al Capone and his gangsters were the most notorious figures in the history of 20th century America. Of course there has been a long connection between the mafia and the Dark Knight. We can remember, as readers, that the mafia has been present in such fundamental works like Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli’s Batman Year One but also in The Long Halloween and many other stories well-regarded by fans all over the world. 

Gotham City

In this story, Harvey Dent is actually Batman and Bruce Wayne is a millionaire who owns newspapers and other businesses around Gotham City. Of course, the title Citizen Wayne is a reference to Citizen Kane and that means that we have this idea that wealth is not necessarily conducive to happiness, so it doesn't matter how many millions of dollars Bruce Wayne has, his life is still unhappy, his father is dead but not his mother. This is also an interesting departure from the original mythos. At the end of the story we get to see a very brutal confrontation between a man who was a hero and another man who wants to be one. Harvey Dent’s face has been disfigured by the gangsters he was fighting against, and now his rival will be no other than Bruce Wayne dressed up as a Japanese Samurai. Certainly since this is an Elseworlds adventure, everything is possible and that is why in the end, the victory of either Batman or Bruce Wayne is not guaranteed and in fact, and this is no spoiler, since you get to see what happens with them on the first page of the comic book, both men die.

Gotham City Police Department

The other interesting aspect of the story is that after the death of Dent and Wayne, a man starts to investigate their past. This is how the story unfolds, in a series of flashbacks which include the mother mourning the loss of her only. We also see Alfred Pennyworth, the ever loyal and faithful butler, who very quickly confides in this mysterious man some of the most personal secrets about Bruce’s life. At the end, it is revealed that this man is no other than district attorney Dick Grayson, so it is fair to assume that in this reality Robin eventually will become Batman.

El resultado son historias que hacen que personajes tan familiares como el ayer parezcan tan frescos como el mañana”. Batman

Pero mientras tanto, reseñaré “Ciudadano Wayne”, que es el cuarto anual de Batman Legends of the Dark Knight. Fue escrito por Brian Augustyn y Mark Waid, quienes a principios y mediados de los 90s solían trabajar mucho juntos, en títulos como Flash e Impulse. El dibujante de Ciudadano Wayne es el veterano artista Joe Staton, quien se hizo famoso por sus contribuciones de larga data a Green Lantern; siempre fue un narrador visual muy capaz y eficaz; sin embargo, aquí su arte alcanza un nivel completamente nuevo de belleza y todo es gracias a las tintas del artista italiano Horacio Ottolini. Podemos ver en cada página una energía única y un contraste de sombras que contrasta con la negrura de las líneas aparentemente desaliñadas. El entintador italiano realza los lápices, en manos de un entintador menos capaz, los rostros de Staton se habrían visto ásperos y quizás los cuerpos se habrían visto rígidos; sin embargo Ottolini agrega una sensación muy palpable no sólo de movimiento sino también de gracia, y que está presente en cada una de las figuras que vemos en la página, así como toques muy singulares y sutiles que sólo un artista sumamente consumado como Ottolini podría haber logrado.

Harvey Dent

Batman, creado en 1938, existió casi al mismo tiempo que Al Capone y sus gangsters eran las figuras más infames de la historia de Estados Unidos del siglo XX. Por supuesto, ha habido una larga conexión entre la mafia y el Caballero Oscuro. Como lectores, podemos recordar que la mafia ha estado presente en obras tan fundamentales como Batman Year One de Frank Miller y David Mazzuchelli, pero también en The Long Halloween y en muchas otras historias bien consideradas por los fanáticos de todo el mundo.

En esta historia, Harvey Dent es en realidad Batman y Bruce Wayne es un millonario dueño de periódicos y otros negocios en Gotham City. El otro aspecto interesante de la historia es que después de la muerte de Dent y Wayne, un hombre comienza a investigar su pasado. Así se desarrolla la historia, en una serie de flashbacks que incluyen a la madre de luto tras la trágica pérdida de su vástago. También vemos a Alfred Pennyworth, el mayordomo siempre leal y fiel, que rápidamente le confía a este misterioso hombre algunos de los secretos más personales sobre la vida de Bruce. Al final, se revela que este hombre no es otro que el fiscal de distrito Dick Grayson, por lo que es justo asumir que en esta realidad Robin eventualmente se convertirá en Batman.

Mythos: Fantastic Four - Paul Jenkins & Paolo Rivera

In 2005, the Mythos series begun. The first one was Mythos: X-Men, a retelling of X-Men # 1 including the classic confrontation with Magneto. Writer Paul Jenkins and artist Paolo Rivera would be in charge of the Mythos series, focusing on retelling the origins of Marvel’s most popular heroes. In the process, they’re both delving deep into the fascinating mythology of the Marvel universe and rediscovering what makes these characters so unique.

If Mythos X-Men was about bigotry and discrimination, Mythos Fantastic Four (December 2007) is about family and the realm of the extraordinary. When Stan Lee created the Fantastic Four in 1961, nobody could’ve predicted how successful the title would be or how solid of a cornerstone it would become. Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing were not only Marvel’s premier superhero family but also the basis upon which an entire universe was built on. 

Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm & Ben Grimm

Jenkins combines grand scale cosmic moments with more down to Earth situations, thus in addition to seeing the 4 heroes venturing into space, we also get to see what happens when they return to the US, and how they must deal with a congressional hearing that will determine whether or not they pose a threat for national security. The scrip of this Mythos one-shot is very good, however the real super start here isn’t the writer but rather the artist: Paolo Rivera.

In Mythos X-Men, Rivera chose to portray Marvel’s mutants with a beautiful impressionistic style. Painted art always takes time, for Rivera, an issue of Mythos could take 4 months on average, sometimes 10 months. Which is why there were never more than 2 issues per year from the Mythos series. In Fantastic Four, Rivera pays homage to all his artistic idols: “I started my love for comics with a healthy dose of Jim Lee, Joe Madureira, Adam Hughes, and Alex Ross. I was never tied to a particular style, I just cared about draftsmanship. As I got older, I gravitated more towards Kirby and Toth, but there’s a whole world of artists out there. I look at a lot of painters too, but not as many as I used to, mostly because I don’t paint as much anymore. H.J. Ward is probably my favorite, though”. Indeed, Rivera comes up with dynamic sequences while preserving the unique aesthetic enjoyment of a carefully painted work of art. 

The Human Torch

When I wrote my review about Mythos: X-Men, my good friend and long-time collaborator César Hernández Meraz affirmed that Rivera’s Fantastic Four was even better. Of course, I made a note to myself to buy that comic and even if it took some time, I finally did it. And César was right! This might very well be the definitive depiction of Johnny Storm, I can’t think of other artists who have done such an amazing work with the Human Torch. The art in Mythos Fantastic Four is beyond amazing. There is an impressive level of detail but also a balanced sense of composition. The scenes in space are breathtakingly beautiful and the sequences that take place in New York feel tremendously real. 

Rivera’s characters are quite expressive, and their body language and actions help us to better understand their personalities. Let’s look at the sulking Thing and the ever-joyful Johnny Storm, who is playing with a glass instead of paying attention to the meeting. Johnny’s carefree attitude is wonderfully conveyed by the artist. One of my favorite panels is the one in which Reed Richards says that he can’t predict the future, and we see as a reflection part of that fantastic future (and dozens of heroes and villains) that is ahead of them. Rivera’s art is so amazing that even people who don’t usually read superhero comics will come to admire his pages!

El escritor Paul Jenkins y el artista Paolo Rivera estarían a cargo de la serie Mythos, centrándose en volver a contar los orígenes de los héroes más populares de Marvel. En el proceso, ambos profundizan en la fascinante mitología del universo Marvel y redescubriendo lo que hace que estos personajes sean tan únicos.

The Thing

Si Mythos X-Men trata sobre el fanatismo y la discriminación, Mythos Fantastic Four (diciembre de 2007) trata sobre la familia y el reino de lo extraordinario. Cuando Stan Lee creó los Cuatro Fantásticos en 1961, nadie podría haber predicho qué tan exitoso sería el título o que sería piedra angular. UU. Y cómo deben lidiar con una audiencia del Congreso que lo hará. determinar si representan o no una amenaza para la seguridad nacional. El guión de este one-shot de Mythos es muy bueno, sin embargo, el verdadero súper comienzo aquí no es el escritor sino el artista: Paolo Rivera.

En Mythos X-Men, Rivera eligió retratar a los mutantes de Marvel con un precioso estilo impresionista. Pintar todo a mano siempre lleva tiempo, para Rivera, un número de Mythos podría tomar 4 meses en promedio, a veces 10 meses. Es por eso que nunca hubo más de 2 números por año de la serie Mythos. Fantastic Four

Cuando escribí mi reseña sobre Mythos: X-Men, mi buen amigo y colaborador César Hernández Meraz afirmó que los Cuatro Fantásticos de Rivera era aún mejor. Por supuesto, tomé nota y decidí comprar este cómic y aunque me tomó un tiempo, finalmente lo hice. ¡Y César tenía razón! Esta podría ser la representación definitiva de Johnny Storm, no puedo pensar en otros artistas que hayan hecho un trabajo tan asombroso con Human Torch. El arte en Mythos Fantastic Four es más que asombroso. Hay un nivel de detalle impresionante pero también un sentido de composición equilibrado. Las escenas en el espacio son increíblemente hermosas y las secuencias que tienen lugar en Nueva York se sienten tremendamente reales.

Los personajes de Rivera son bastante expresivos y su lenguaje corporal y acciones nos ayudan a comprender mejor sus personalidades. Veamos a Thing enfurruñado y al siempre juguetón Johnny Storm, que está jugando con un vaso en lugar de prestar atención a la asamblea. El artista transmite maravillosamente la actitud despreocupada de Johnny. Una de mis viñetas favoritas es aquella en la que Reed Richards dice que no puede predecir el futuro, y vemos un reflejo de una fracción de ese futuro fantástico (con decenas de héroes y villanos) que tienen por delante. ¡El arte de Rivera es tan asombroso que incluso las personas que no suelen leer cómics de superhéroes van a admirar sus páginas!

I only got a few comics in August but I promise there will be more in September! The Boys Dear Becky and Strange Adventures continue to amaze me! And I love the new hardcover edition with Neil Gaiman stories. I’ve always been a Young Avengers fan, and Zdarsky and Oliveira really hit a home run with Emperor Hulkling, my favorite issue of the month! Turns out last month I ended up focusing on Anton Yelchin, who tragically died at age 27 in 2016. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond (2016), but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The Enterprise is destroyed by a new alien race that has a strong reason to hate the United Federation of Planets. Robert Orci returns as a screenwriter and the result is quite good. Star Trek Beyond has a lot of action and that sense of adventure one would expect from a crew that has boldly gone where no one has gone before. It was also great to see such an amazing group of actors reprising their roles: Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness), Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin (Green Room), as well as having new additions like Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella. If you’re a trekkie, you can’t miss this one. 

Fierce People (2005), directed by Griffin Dunne and based on Dirk Wittenborn’s book, is a very unique and special film that follows the life of Anton Yelchin (Fright Night), a teenager with a passion for anthropology, who is suddenly taken by his mother, Diane Lane (Cinema Verité), a recovering drug addict, to a completely new and alien environment, the estate of Donald Sutherland (Il Casanova), one of the richest men in the US, who lives a carefree life full of indulgence and extravagance. For the protagonist, he has entered into a new world, a new tribe of people, and he does his best to fit in. He meets Chris Evans (Puncture) and they quickly become friends, and he also falls in love with Kristen Stewart (Equals), the heiress that everyone is after. With an all-star cast and a captivating script, Dunne makes us understand what it means to fall into a strange land full of bizarre rituals, but above all, the filmmaker transmits with clarity and emotion the turmoil of adolescence. This coming of age story, of course, isn’t all about happiness, and when the boy is raped in the middle of the night by an anonymous assailant, he must decide whether to remain there and pretend like nothing has happened, or keep fighting and find out who did that terrible thing. 

Like Crazy (2011), by Drake Doremus, is a love story about two college students, Anton Yelchin (House of D) and Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story); he’s American and she’s British. At the beginning everything is love and happiness, but then she overstays here visa, and when tries to re-enter the US she’s immediately deported. What started as a simple love story turns out to be a rather peculiar exploration of the immigration laws of the US. Doremus highlights the pain and the frustration experimented by the young couple, who are now in different continents. At some point the protagonist begins a relationship with Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), and that makes sense, after all, proximity is always the base for most relationships. I think in general there are promising ideas here, but the execution overall is a bit lacking. 

Verdensvevde kropper (2015) is a Norwegian short film written and directed by Truls Krane Meby. A 12-year old boy, Heine Dybvik, is delighted to see that his parents have bought a computer. It’s the early 90s, the Internet is still starting, but there are already porn webpages, which the boy eagerly awaits to see. Staying up late and coming with absurd excuses, the protagonist masturbates constantly while watching porn, but one day he discovers that his father has also been doing the same. It’s only a matter of time before the mom discovers what’s going on, but who will take the blame for that? The filmmaker depicts really well the hypocrisy of the adults as well as the boy’s naiveté.

Resulta que el mes pasado terminé enfocándome en Anton Yelchin, que murió trágicamente a los 27 años en el 2016. No estaba seguro de cuál sería la recepción de Star Trek Beyond (2016) de Justin Lin, pero debo admitir que me sorprendió gratamente. La nave Enterprise es destruida por una nueva raza alienígena que tiene una fuerte razón para odiar a la Federación Unida de Planetas. Robert Orci vuelve como guionista y el resultado es bastante bueno. Star Trek Beyond tiene mucha acción y ese sentido de aventura que uno esperaría de una tripulación que ha ido audazmente a donde nadie más ha ido antes. También fue genial ver a un grupo tan increíble de actores repitiendo sus papeles:  Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness), Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin (Green Room), además de tener nuevas incorporaciones como Idris Elba y Sofia Boutella. Si eres un trekkie, no te la  puedes perder.

En algún momento el protagonista comienza una relación con Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), y eso tiene sentido, después de todo, la proximidad es siempre la base de la mayoría de las relaciones. Creo que, en general, hay ideas prometedoras aquí, pero la ejecución en general es un poco deficiente.

Verdensvevde kropper (2015) es un cortometraje noruego escrito y dirigido por Truls Krane Meby. Un chico de 12 años, Heine Dybvik, está encantado de ver que sus padres han comprado una computadora.
