Although I had already read it, I was glad to receive the Martha Washington tpb, a classic Frank Miller / Dave Gibbons story. I’m really enjoying Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Shaolin Cowboy (Geof Darrow is truly amazing). Cinema Purgatorio continues to be a great anthology. And Batman ’66 Meets the Legion of Super-Heroes was very entertaining. There were also some really good first issues in July, such as Astonishing X-Men and especially Generation Gone (my favorite comic of the month). And now, without further ado, here are July comics as per solicitations:

Aunque ya lo había leído, me gustó recibir el tomo de Martha Washington, una historia clásica de Frank Miller / Dave Gibbons. Realmente estoy disfrutando American Gods de Neil Gaiman y Shaolin Cowboy (Geof Darrow es realmente asombroso). Cinema Purgatorio continúa siendo una gran antología. Y Batman ’66 Meets the Legion of Super-Heroes fue muy entretenido. June Comics / cómics de junio

I received some really impressive comics last month, such as Cinema Purgatorio, American Gods, Silver Surfer and Shaolin Cowboy. And I must admit I was surprised by the new comic book titles that came out in June, like Marvel’s Defenders and especially Diablo House (by the extraordinary Spanish artist Santiperez). However, my favorite new series and also the best issue of the month is Sacred Creatures, by Raimondi and Janson; captivating script and amazing art. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations:

Marvel sure had a lot of good first issues in October, such as Jessica Jones, Champions, Infamous Iron Man; and there were also at least a couple of interesting new series coming from Image: Reborn and Moonshine. However, the best comic of the month was Descender # 15, great story plus amazing art. And now, without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations:

April comics / cómics de abril

April sure came with a lot of good surprised. For the first time in my life, I decided to buy a Marvel Omnibus, and I’m glad I did. Marvel Universe by John Byrne is an extraordinary edition that compiles the works of one of my favorite creators; there are over one thousand pages of Byrne art in here and each page is a true delight for me; I’m just thrilled to have this amazing hardcover in my possession. Millar did a satisfactory job with the final issue of Huck and the first issue of Empress. I really enjoyed Silver Surfer and Jupiter’s Circle. Bermejo’s new Suciders series was quite impressive. Providence continues to be one of the best miniseries and this particular issue has some really unforgettable moments. But the best issue of the month was The Fix # 1, I couldn’t stop laughing while reading this transgressive comic… can’t remember the last time I had so much fun with a first issue, which is why I’m giving Nick Spencer due credit for this awesome new series. And now, without further ado, here are April comics as per solicitations:

Hubo muchas buenas sorpresas en abril. Por primera vez en mi vida decidí comprar un Marvel Omnibus y me alegra haberlo hecho. “Marvel Universe by John Byrne” es una extraordinaria edición que recopila la obra de uno de mis creadores favoritos; hay más de mil páginas de arte de Byrne aquí, y cada página es una verdadera delicia; estoy encantado de tener en mis manos este asombroso tomo en tapa dura. Millar hizo un trabajo satisfactorio con el número final de “Huck” y el primer ejemplar de “Empress”. Realmente disfruté con “Silver Surfer” y “Jupiter’s Circle”. La nueva serie de “Suciders” de Bermejo fue bastante impresionante. “Providence” sigue siendo una de las mejores miniseries y en este número en particular hay momentos realmente inolvidables. Pero lo mejor del mes fue “The Fix”, no pude dejar de reír mientras leía este cómic transgresor… no recuerdo la última vez que me divertí tanto con un primer ejemplar, así que le doy a Nick Spencer el crédito que merece por esta estupenda nueva serie. Doctor Strange Vol. 1 - Jason Aaron, Chris Bachalo & Kevin Nowlan

I still remember the first time I read a Doctor Strange comic. It was an old 80s issue, the kind you would often find in the quarter bin. Instead of getting whatever was considered “cool” at the moment I decided to get Doctor Strange; there was something special (should I dare say magical?) about this issue written by Roger Stern and magnificently illustrated by Paul Smith.

I didn’t know anything about the character back then, and even now I can’t consider myself an expert in the Sorcerer Supreme, but that issue turned me into a fan. From then on, I’ve always said that Doctor Strange is one of my favorite Marvel superheroes, just like Arion, Lord of Atlantis, is one of my favorite DC heroes (which should be rather obvious if we take into account this blog’s title). Both heroes share one element in common: magic. 

However, the Master of the Mystic Arts eventually fell under a spell of bad luck. For some undecipherable reason, the creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko was slowly fading away. Years after the cancellation of his title, Stephen Strange would still appear here and there as a supporting character in the Avengers books and a few other titles… certainly a minor role for one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes. 

So when I heard last year that Marvel would give Doctor Strange another chance I must confess I became rapidly excited. And when I found out that Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo would be the creative team behind this mystical relaunch, I knew it would be a hit. And turns out I was right. “The Way of the Weird” (originally published in Doctor Strange # 1, December 2015) is a wonderful voyage through fantastic realms, supernatural threats and peculiar wizards. The second issue (January 2016) and “Eaters of Magic” (Doctor Strange # 3, February 2016) are very entertaining. Aaron’s whimsical and humorous portray of the Sorcerer Supreme is complemented by a plethora of crazy ideas and bizarre elements, which are splendidly illustrated by Chris Bachalo.

“I walk alone through the nameless reaches of the netherworld. Each day weirder than the last. Each new challenge liable to end with my doom or damnation or final descent into screaming madness”, explains Stephen Strange, but despite all that, he loves his mission: being Earth’s first (and often only) line of defense “against all manner of magical threats”.

However, as we can see in “The Art of Puking Without Puking” (Doctor Strange # 4, March 2016), being the Sorcerer Supreme isn’t easy, and it demands a level of sacrifice not many heroes could withstand. “If a normal punch takes a physical toll on the one who throws it, what do you imagine the price of casting a spell to be?”, asks the Ancient One, mentor of Stephen Strange. For years, readers have ignored what was that price, and now everything is finally being revealed. Personally, I think that it’s an excellent idea to try to understand the logic behind the magic. In the process, Doctor Strange is humanized, and he becomes an even more complex and appealing character than he already was.

Another one of my favorite moments is the complicity between Strange and his faithful manservant Wong; in many ways, they are like Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth, they share an almost symbiotic relationship and one cannot exist without the other, so much that they’ll do anything they can to guarantee their mutual survival. Nevertheless, until now we had never seen the things that Wong had to do in order to bring back Stephen Strange from the brink of death, in so many occasions. The answers are shocking, and everything fits in perfectly. I’d say that “Pound of Flesh” (Doctor Strange # 5, April 2016) proves Aaron’s impressive narrative talent.

I’ve been a fan of Chris Bachalo since I first saw his work on Neil Gaiman’s Death: the High Cost of Living. And after so many years, his style continues to evolve, embracing expressivity and movement above all else. Bachalo is the ideal fit for this collection of demented scenarios, weird extra-dimensional monsters and anomalous events. Although Bachalo is in charge of most of the covers, Kevin Nowlan is responsible for the fantastic covers of issues 4 and 5, his magnificent contribution to the world of Doctor Strange consists in his elegant lines and inspired designs (the cover for issue # 4, in particular, is my favorite). Can’t wait to read the next issues!

Hace un par de décadas no conocía mucho sobre el personaje, e incluso ahora tampoco me considero un experto en el Hechicero Supremo, pero ese cómic me convirtió en un fan. A partir de entonces, siempre he dicho que Doctor Strange es uno de mis superhéroes favoritos de Marvel, al igual que Arion, Señor de la Atlántida, es uno de mis predilectos en DC (algo que debería ser bastante obvio si tenemos en cuenta el título de este blog). Ambos héroes comparten un elemento en común: la magia.

Sin embargo, el maestro de las artes místicas eventualmente cayó bajo un hechizo de mala suerte. Por alguna razón indescifrable, la creación de Stan Lee y Steve Ditko se desvanecía lentamente. Años después de la cancelación de su colección, Stephen Strange todavía aparecía de vez en cuando como personaje secundario en los Vengadores y algún otro título más... ciertamente un papel de poca relevancia para uno de los más poderosos héroes de Marvel.

Así que cuando el año pasado supe que Marvel le daría otra oportunidad he de confesar que me sentí entusiasmado. Y cuando descubrí que Jason Aaron y Chris Bachalo serían el equipo creativo detrás de este místico relanzamiento, imaginé que sería un éxito. Y resulta que así fue. “El camino de lo extraño” (publicado originalmente en Doctor Strange # 1, diciembre del 2015) es una travesía maravillosa a través de reinos fantásticos, amenazas sobrenaturales y magos peculiares. El segundo número (enero del 2016) y “Devoradores de magia” (Doctor Strange # 3, febrero de 2016) fueron realmente entretenidos. Aaron retrata al hechicero supremo con humor y fina ironía, complementando el argumento con una gran cantidad de ideas locas y elementos raros, todos espléndidamente ilustrados por Chris Bachalo.

Is someone stealing magic? / ¿alguien se está robando la magia?

“Camino solitariamente por los confines del inframundo. Cada día más extraño que el anterior. Cada nuevo reto próximo a terminar con mi condenación o el descenso final hacia la bulliciosa locura”, explica Stephen Strange, pero a pesar de todo eso, le encanta su misión: ser la primera (y a menudo única) línea de defensa de la Tierra “contra todo tipo de amenazas mágicas”.

Sin embargo, como podemos ver en “El arte de vomitar sin vómitos” (Doctor Strange # 4, marzo del 2016), ser el Hechicero Supremo no es fácil, y requiere un tipo de sacrificio que muy pocos héroes podrían soportar. “Si un puñetazo normal tiene una consecuencia física para aquel que suelta el golpe, ¿cuál imaginas que es el precio de soltar un hechizo?”, pregunta el Anciano, mentor de Stephen Strange. Durante años, los lectores han ignorado cuál era ese precio, y ahora por fin será revelado. En mi opinión, esta es una excelente idea que permite entender la lógica detrás de la magia. En el proceso, Doctor Strange es humanizado, y se convierte en un personaje aún más complejo e interesante.

Otro de mis temas favoritos es la complicidad entre Strange y su fiel criado Wong; en muchos aspectos, ellos son como Bruce Wayne y Alfred Pennyworth, comparten una relación casi simbiótica y uno no puede existir sin el otro, a tal punto que harán todo lo posible para garantizar su supervivencia. Sin embargo, hasta ahora nunca habíamos visto las cosas que Wong había tenido que hacer, en tantas ocasiones, para preservar la vida de Stephen Strange. Las respuestas son impactantes, y todo encaja a la perfección. “Libra de carne” (Doctor Strange # 5, abril del 2016) demuestra el impresionante talento narrativo de Aaron.

He sido un fan de Chris Bachalo desde que vi por primera vez su trabajo en “Death: the High Cost of Living” de Neil Gaiman. Y después de tantos años, su estilo sigue evolucionando, asimilando la expresividad y el movimiento por encima de todo. Bachalo es el complemento ideal para esta colección de escenarios demenciales, monstruos extra-dimensionales y eventos anómalos. Aunque Bachalo está a cargo de la mayor parte de las portadas, Kevin Nowlan es responsable de las fantásticas portadas de los números 4 y 5, su magnífica contribución al mundo de Doctor Strange consiste en sus líneas elegantes y diseños inspirados (la portada del número 4, en particular, es mi favorita). ¡Estoy impaciente por leer los próximos ejemplares!

February comics / cómics de febrero

February was such a good month for comics. I’m amazed by the high quality of Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer, which are quickly turning into my most eagerly-awaited monthly series. Millar is still firing on all cylinders with Huck and especially the second volume of Jupiter’s Circle. And Image has a couple of promising new series: Snowfall and Cry Havoc. However, once again my favorite comic of the month, and by quite a large margin, is Alan Moore’s Providence # 7. Can’t wait to start reviewing this series. Febrero fue un gran mes en materia de cómics. Estoy asombrado por la altísima calidad de “Doctor Strange” y “Silver Surfer”, que se están convirtiendo en dos de mis series mensuales predilectas. Millar sigue dando lo mejor de sí con “Huck” y especialmente el segundo volumen de “Jupiter’s Circle”. Image ha lanzado un par de títulos prometedores: “Snowfall” y “Cry Havoc”. Sin embargo, una vez más, mi cómic favorito del mes es, de lejos, Providence # 7 de Alan Moore. Estoy impaciente por reseñar esta serie. Y ahora sin mayores preámbulos aquí están los cómics de febrero.
