Eternals: Thanos Rises, Celestia & The Heretic - Kieron Gillen

Eternals very quickly became one of my favorite ongoing titles from Marvel comics in recent years. Lately it has become so difficult to find good monthly titles; in general, they are muddled with hundreds of crossovers, tie-ins to the new massive event. It seems like the art of producing a title that stands on its own has been lost. Fortunately Kieron Gillen was able to accomplish that in the pages of Eternals from the very beginning; that is the reason why I kept on buying the title every month. I reviewed the first 6 issues and then there was a pause, and 3 one-shots came along.

“Thanos Rises” was published in November 2021. Here Kieron Gillen writes about the past of the Eternals, which as we know, encompasses not only centuries and millennia but also hundreds of thousands of years. It’s always interesting to explore all that infinite past and that is precisely what Gillen does in the pages of the first one-shot. We see the origin of one of the most popular villains today and the main antagonist in The Avengers movies, we’re talking of course about Thanos, the Mad Titan. There were two Eternals that crossed the limit and broke the law of the Eternals by committing the ultimate sin: the Eternals cannot reproduce, it has never been allowed; when the Celestials designed the Eternals that was one of the first and major rules and yet we see a couple who defies the natural order and the result is a hideous creature who even as a baby starts causing death around him.

The artist is Dustin Weaver, who’s always been interesting to me. I remember I first became familiar with the works of Weaver thanks to his absolutely magnificent covers for a Shield miniseries that took place in the past and the present; certainly Weaver has been working regularly for Marvel and has produced stellar results, pages that are always a joy to behold and that pack so much energy. So I was just thrilled to see him working for Gillen this time.

Esad Ribić

As for the Esad Ribić’s, cover, we see a magnificent portrait of Thanos walking around the ruins of an unidentified thrown room and surrounded by skulls and skeletons, reinforcing the idea that his very presence is synonym of death; but behind him in the cosmic shadows of the universe we see a presence that is invisible to him but visible to us, the eternals who were his parents. In this story we will see how he learns more about his past and his secret a connection with the Eternals. 

In the second cover we have a magnificent representation of one of the gigantic creatures known as the Celestials in a classic Jack Kirby design. As we know, Jack ‘King’ Kirby was responsible for creating much of the Marvel universe and of course the entire Eternals mythology too. In the third cover by Andrea Sorrentino what we see is basically a reference to the first one shot; it’s yet again a throne room in ruins but in a different setting and everything is in shadows or rather in a very special sunset or dusk. We will soon learn who is to become the new absolute ruler of the Eternals.

“Celestia” was published in December 2021. This is the prologue: “A long time ago, alien space gods came to Earth. They made 100 Eternals. They made 100 Deviants. They left. Everything since has been a complete lie”. In Celestia we see how Ajak is losing her faith in the celestials who created her along with all the other Eternals. This story takes a place over a million years ago and of course one of the interesting concepts that we see here is the a presence of the Avengers of one million years ago, which is a concept explored in the pages of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers a few years ago. 

A million years ago we did have a Sorcerer Supreme which would be the equivalent of Doctor Strange today we had the Phoenix Force, we had a Ghost Rider -riding a mammoth, of course, since there are no motorcycles at the time- we had a black panther of sorts and even a Star Brand which readers of the New Universe would recognize. Gods are also eternal and so there is a moment when they clash against the Eternals and as it happens in most superhero stories there is always a confrontation, a fight, and then a moment of conciliation when they understand that they mostly have the same goals and they share the same ideologies. At the end the leader of the Eternals decides to let the Avengers live and to let humankind prosper. There is this notion that the Eternals don't intervene that much after the homo sapiens become the dominant species in the planet. This one-shot explores a lot of the past in ways that I think no other previous writer had attempted.

Here the artist is Kei Zama. Is the first time that I see the work of this Japanese artist. There is certainly a lot of good moments, a lot of good sequences. The artwork is solid, but certainly Zama can still improve. There's definitely a sign of a good understanding of what it needs to be done in the comic book format to astonish the reader so I'm sure we'll see plenty more captivating things from her in the future.

Finally, in May 2022, “The Heretic” was released. Here Gillen writes about the age of the Patriarchs so here we see the main dynasties of the Eternals. First was the Uranus dynasty, the Oceanus dynasty and the Kronos dynasty as we can see according to the genealogy established by Gillen. Uranus is the grandfather of not only Ikaris but also Thanos so here we have the main heroe and the main villain sharing the same ancestry.

This one-shot is a focused mainly on Uranus and his past as one of the Patriarchs and how roughly half a million years ago he tried to exterminate the entire universe, so when he meets Thanos he mocks him for only killing half of the population of the Galaxy: “you killed half the universe, boy, 50%. What a lack of commitment. Do something or don't do it”. Certainly Uranus seems to be even more fearsome than Thanos himself and so here we learn about an ultimate weapon that could very much destroy everything in existence and as a crazy as Thanos can be, even he has doubts. He decides to keep his grandfather in prison much in the same way that he was imprisoned half a million years ago by the Eternals.

The art is by Ryan Bodenheim who has always been a magnificent artist and who has worked for several publishers. I remember the first work I saw and admired and loved was in the pages of Red Wing with writer Jonathan Hickman, and he also worked with Mark Guggenheim in a miniseries that I wish I could review soon. Unfortunately Bodenheim passed away in 2021. So this Eternals one-shot is basically his last work and it's just beautiful; there is a very unique beauty that combines calm and serenity but at the same time it feels very universal. Ryan Bodenheim is able to reminds us of the larger-than-life personalities of these eternal creatures. It’s always interesting to see other artists besides Ribić, sharing with us their unique take on these characters.

Eternals se convirtió rápidamente en uno de mis títulos mensuales favoritos de Marvel en los últimos años. Últimamente se ha vuelto tan difícil encontrar buenos títulos mensuales; en general, están entreverados con cientos de sagas y referencias al nuevo evento masivo. Parece que se ha perdido el arte de producir un título que valga por sí mismo. Afortunadamente, Kieron Gillen pudo lograr eso en las páginas de Eternals desde el principio; esa es la razón por la que seguí comprando el título todos los meses. Reseñé los primeros 6 números y luego hubo una pausa, y aparecieron 3 one-shots.

“Thanos Rises” se publicó en noviembre del 2021. Aquí Kieron Gillen escribe sobre el pasado de los Eternos que, como sabemos, abarca no sólo siglos y milenios sino también cientos de miles de años. Siempre es interesante explorar todo ese pasado infinito y eso es precisamente lo que hace Gillen en las páginas del primer one-shot. Vemos el origen de uno de los villanos más populares de la actualidad y principal antagonista de las películas de Avengers, estamos hablando por supuesto de Thanos, el Titán Loco. Hubo dos Eternos que traspasaron el límite y quebrantaron la ley de los Eternos al cometer el pecado supremo: los Eternos no pueden reproducirse, esto nunca se ha permitido; cuando los Celestiales diseñaron a los Eternos, esa fue una de las primeras y más importantes reglas y, sin embargo, vemos a una pareja que desafía el orden natural y el resultado es una criatura horrible que, incluso como un bebé, comienza a causar la muerte a su alrededor.

El artista es Dustin Weaver, que siempre ha sido interesante para mí. En la segunda portada tenemos una magnífica representación de una de las gigantescas criaturas conocidas como los Celestiales en un diseño clásico de Jack Kirby. Como sabemos, Jack 'King' Kirby fue responsable de crear gran parte del universo Marvel y, por supuesto, también de toda la mitología de los Eternos. En la tercera portada de Andre Sorrentino lo que vemos es básicamente una referencia al primer one-shot; se trata de nuevo de un salón del trono en ruinas pero en un escenario diferente y todo está en sombras o más bien en un atardecer o anochecer muy especial. Pronto sabremos quién se convertirá en el nuevo gobernante absoluto de los Eternos.

“Celestia” se publicó en diciembre del 2021. Este es el prólogo: “Hace mucho tiempo, dioses extraterrestres del espacio llegaron a la Tierra. Hicieron 100 Eternos. Hicieron 100 Desviantes. Se fueron. Todo desde entonces ha sido una completa mentira”. En Celestia vemos cómo Ajak está perdiendo la fe en los Celestiales que la crearon junto con todos los demás Eternos. Esta historia ocurre hace más de un millón de años y, por supuesto, uno de los conceptos interesantes que vemos aquí es la presencia de los Avengers de hace un millón de años, que es un concepto explorado en las páginas de los Avengers de Jonathan Hickman hace unos años.

Hace un millón de años teníamos un Hechicero Supremo que sería el equivalente de Doctor Strange hoy, teníamos la Fuerza Fénix, teníamos un Ghost Rider -montando un mamut, por supuesto, ya que no había motocicletas en ese momento- teníamos una especie de Black Panther e incluso un Star Brand que los lectores del Nuevo Universo reconocerían. Aquí la artista es Kei Zama. Es la primera vez que veo el trabajo de esta artista japonesa. Ciertamente hay muchos buenos momentos, muchas buenas secuencias. El dibujo es sólido, pero ciertamente Zama aún puede mejorar. Definitivamente hay una señal de una buena comprensión de lo que se necesita hacer en el formato de cómic para asombrar al lector, así que estoy seguro de que veremos muchas más cosas cautivadoras de ella en el futuro.

Finalmente, en mayo del 2022, salió “The Heretic”. Aquí Gillen escribe sobre la era de los Patriarcas, así que aquí vemos las principales dinastías de los Eternos. Primero fue la dinastía de Urano, la dinastía de Oceanus y la dinastía de Kronos como podemos ver según la genealogía establecida por Gillen. Urano es el abuelo no solo de Ikaris sino también de Thanos, por lo que aquí tenemos al héroe principal y al villano principal que comparten la misma ascendencia.

Decide mantener a su abuelo en prisión de la misma manera que los Eternos lo encarcelaron hace medio millón de años.

Ryan Bodenheim

El arte es de Ryan Bodenheim, que siempre ha sido un artista magnífico y que ha trabajado para varias editoriales. Recuerdo que el primer trabajo suyo que vi, admiré y que me encantó fue en las páginas de Red Wing con el escritor Jonathan Hickman, y él también trabajó con Mark Guggenheim en una miniserie que desearía poder revisar pronto. Green Lantern: Ganthet’s Tale - Larry Niven & John Byrne

Not every day an extremely famous science fiction writer decides to join DC Comics, and yet that is precisely what happened almost 30 years ago. Larry Niven decided to work alongside legendary creator John Byrne. Together they came up with Green Lantern: Ganthet’s Tale, originally published as a one-shot in prestige format in 1992. 

The description of this very special one-shot is as follows: “They are the most powerful beings in the universe yet the Guardians fear that if anyone learns their greatest secret, everything that exists will vanish. To prevent this ultimate tragedy, they seek the help of a gallant Earthman named Hal Jordan - who may not be in time”. Ganthet is the name one of the guardians of the universe who travels to Earth to recruit Hal Jordan. 

The first encounter between the guardian of the universe and Green Lantern is quite memorable and amusing. Ganthet inspects Jordan’s room with a lot of curiosity, but perhaps the funniest moment takes place when the blue-skinned man grabs a Playboy magazine that belongs to the famous superhero. This sort of element is reminiscent of Byrne’s artwork in Uncanny X-Men, when Wolverine looks at Playboy magazines. In this situation, Hal Jordan simply pronounces his solemn oath: “In Brightest Day, in Blackest Night, no evil shall Escape my sight. Let those who worship Evil's might ... beware my power , Green Lantern's light!”.

And that is the beginning of this unusual adventure. As was seen in Crisis on Infinite Earths, Krona’s greatest crime was to go back in time to see the beginning of the creation of the universe; however as we can see in the famous 80's saga there are some elements that don't seem to be as coherent in terms of physical laws of the universe. Niven, as a science fiction, world-renowned author, decides to go back to the myth of creation by offering an alternative solution to the time paradox that was already present in the original crisis. Furthermore Niven expands on at least two different time paradoxes: one involving Krona’s original sin which is to peer through the veil of time and see what is the real origin versus the result of his actions which is the collision between the universe of matter and the universe of antimatter which will lead to the confrontation between the Monitor and the anti-monitor, and the destruction of the multiverse.

John Byrne helps scripting the story created by Niven. Of course Byrne’s artwork is as good as it used to be in the 90s, he is in charge of inking himself, and albeit in some of the pages the result is rather rough instead of the smooth and polished pages that were typical in the 80s, it still works amazingly and fits the story very well; especially since this is not the typical story of superheroes against supervillains but rather a story of disillusion and disenchantment. 

We learn why even be the incredible level of power wielded by the guardians of the universe isn’t enough. In the end the real power is not the strength the Green Lanterns power battery or the duration of the Green Lantern power ring or the defenses of planet Oa, the biggest and most indestructible shield the guardians have is their history, which is a narrative that tells us of their glorious godlike days. However their past is less than glorious and it is in reality so shameful that they decided centuries ago that it must be kept as a secret.

Can this story be viewed as a preamble for Parallax, the story in which Hal Jordan will fight against the guardians of the universe, his own masters? Perhaps it is, because in the end, and I quote, “I've served the Guardians loyally and more or less unquestioningly for many years now. To suddenly discover the very cornerstone of their claim to universal power and dominion is rooted in falsehood”. And thus, the seeds of doubt are implanted in the mind of one of Earth’s greatest superheroes.

No todos los días un escritor de ciencia ficción extremadamente famoso decide unirse a DC Comics y, sin embargo, eso es precisamente lo que sucedió hace casi 30 años. Larry Niven decidió trabajar junto al legendario creador John Byrne. Juntos lanzaron Green Lantern: Ganthet's Tale, publicado originalmente como one-shot en formato prestigio en 1992.

La descripción de este one-shot especial es la siguiente: “Son los seres más poderosos del universo, pero los Guardianes temen que si alguien descubre su mayor secreto, todo lo que existe desaparecerá. Para evitar esta tragedia definitiva, buscan la ayuda de un valiente terrestre llamado Hal Jordan, que quizá no llegue a tiempo”. Ganthet es el nombre de uno de los guardianes del universo que viaja a la Tierra para reclutar a Hal Jordan.

El primer encuentro entre el guardián del universo y Green Lantern es bastante memorable y divertido. Ganthet inspecciona la habitación de Jordan con mucha curiosidad, pero quizás el momento más divertido es cuando el hombre de piel azul agarra una revista Playboy que pertenece al famoso superhéroe. Este tipo de elemento nos recuerda al arte de Byrne en Uncanny X-Men, cuando Wolverine mira las revistas Playboy. En esta situación, Hal Jordan simplemente pronuncia su solemne juramento: “En el día más brillante, en la noche más oscura, ningún mal escapará a mi vista. Que los que adoran el poder del Mal... ¡teman mi poder, la luz de Linterna Verde!”.

Y ese es el comienzo de esta inusual aventura. Como se vio en Crisis en Tierras Infinitas, el mayor crimen de Krona fue retroceder en el tiempo para ver el comienzo de la creación del universo; sin embargo, como podemos ver en la famosa saga de los 80s, hay algunos elementos que no parecen ser tan coherentes en cuanto a las leyes físicas del universo. Niven, como autor de ciencia ficción de renombre mundial, decide volver al mito de la creación ofreciendo una solución alternativa a la paradoja temporal que ya estaba presente en la crisis original. Además, Niven se enfoca en al menos dos paradojas del tiempo diferentes: una que involucra el pecado original de Krona, que es mirar a través del velo del tiempo y ver cuál es el origen real versus el resultado de sus acciones, que es la colisión entre el universo de materia y el universo de antimateria, que conducirá al enfrentamiento entre el Monitor y el Anti-Monitor, y la destrucción del multiverso.

John Byrne ayuda a escribir el guión de la historia creada por Niven. Por supuesto que el arte de Byrne es tan bueno como solía ser en los 90s, él mismo se encarga de entintar, y aunque en algunas de las páginas el resultado es más bien tosco en lugar de las páginas lisas y pulidas que eran típicas de los 80s, de todos modos funciona y encaja muy bien con la historia; especialmente porque esta no es la típica historia de superhéroes contra supervillanos, sino más bien una historia de desilusión y desencanto.

Descubrimos por qué incluso el increíble nivel de poder ejercido por los guardianes del universo no es suficiente. Al final el poder real no es la fuerza de la batería de energía de los Green Lanterns o la duración del anillo de poder de los Green Lantern o las defensas del planeta Oa, el escudo más grande e indestructible que tienen los guardianes es su historia, que es una narrativa que cuenta sobre sus gloriosos días divinos. Sin embargo, su pasado es menos que glorioso y en realidad es tan vergonzoso que decidieron hace siglos que debía mantenerse en secreto.

¿Se puede ver esta historia como un preámbulo de Parallax, la historia en la que Hal Jordan luchará contra los guardianes del universo, sus propios amos? Conan the Barbarian: Exodus - Esad Ribic

Exactly a year ago, I read the first issue of the new Conan the Barbarian series edited by Marvel. It certainly was a return to greatness, after a not so stellar run in the hands of a different publisher. One of the main reasons I decided to buy all Conan issues was the cover art. Esad Ribić illustrated all 12 Conan covers last year, and each one of them is spectacular.

Ribić is a Croatian artist who started working for Marvel Comics in 2000, exceling as a cover artist in popular titles such as Wolverine, in which he got away with portraying a naked Nightcrawler in the cover of the 6th issue. In any case, “heir to masters like Frank Frazetta and Alex Ross, Ribić combines photorealism with impressionism, and the result is a premium selection of beautiful and unforgettable covers”. And in addition of being one of the best cover artists in the industry, Ribić is also an incredibly talented penciler, inker and colorist. 

Ribić is the reason why I started reading Thor: God of Thunder, and he’s the reason why I picked up the new Conan the Barbarian series, and when I saw he’d be in charge of a very special one-shot, I immediately knew I had to get it. “15 winters in Cimmeria have toughened the young Conan, but his greatest challenge lies ahead. Braving the elements, without food, without shelter, without weapons, Conan must learn to survive even as nature itself conspires to stop him. The snow freezes his bones. The wolves smell his blood. But if he can reach civilization, will his wounds heal…or will his troubles just begin?”. That is the beginning of a story written, penciled, inked and colored by the Croatian artist, and the result is absolutely impressive. 

I had no idea Ribić was such a wonderful writer, and he does what is most difficult for a writer: tell a silent story. Based on my own experience, when it comes to writing comics, there are basically 3 levels of difficulty, in the first level, the easy one, a writer uses everything at his disposal, thought balloons, captions, large exposition dialogues to explain what’s going on, etc. No good writer stays on that first level. In the second level, the intermediate one, a writer focuses on storytelling and replaces captions and thought balloons with panels that will convey that information visually. In the third level, the difficult one, a writer eliminates all text. If one can tell a story without words, then one is truly a master of the comic book medium, and that is precisely what Ribić proves in the pages of Exodus.

In this “man versus nature” setting, I can only think of masters like the Italians Berardi & Milazzo who were able to tell a moving and shocking story in 20 silent pages. Again, it isn’t an easy task to tell an entire story without a single word being pronounced by your protagonist. But Ribić doesn’t need sentences or dialogues, because one of his images is worth at least a thousand words. From the extraordinary cover in which Conan stabs a wolf with an improvised weapon, to the stunning inner art in which Conan must run from the other wolves in the pack, everything that we need to see to understand what’s going on is there, and the silence creates an even greater dramatic tension than anything else. Ribić also makes us realize how desperate Conan is, and how starvation forces him to the most reckless decisions. The absolute beauty of Ribić’s lines, his harmonic designs and his delicate chromatic balance turn each page into a unique work of art.

Hace exactamente un año, leí el primer número de la nueva serie de Conan the Barbarian editada por Marvel. Ciertamente fue un regreso a la grandeza, después de una etapa no muy estelar que digamos en manos de una editorial diferente. Una de las principales razones por las que decidí comprar todos los números de Conan fue la portada. Esad Ribić ilustró las 12 portadas de Conan el año pasado, y cada una de ellas es espectacular.

Ribić es un artista croata que comenzó a trabajar para Marvel Comics en el 2000, sobresaliendo como portadista en títulos tan populares como Wolverine, en el que se salió con la suya al retratar a un Nightcrawler desnudo en la portada del sexto número. En cualquier caso, “heredero de maestros como Frank Frazetta y Alex Ross, Ribić combina el fotorrealismo con el impresionismo, y el resultado es una excelente selección de portadas hermosas e inolvidables”. Y además de ser uno de los mejores portadistas de la industria, Ribić también es un dibujante, entintador y colorista increíblemente talentoso.

Ribić es la razón por la que comencé a leer Thor: God of Thunder, y él es la razón por la que compré la nueva serie de Conan the Barbarian, y cuando vi que estaría a cargo de un one-shot muy especial, inmediatamente supe que debía conseguirlo. “15 inviernos en Cimmeria han endurecido al joven Conan, pero su mayor desafío está por delante. Desafiando a los elementos, sin comida, sin refugio, sin armas, Conan debe aprender a sobrevivir incluso mientras la naturaleza misma conspira para detenerlo. La nieve congela sus huesos. Los lobos huelen su sangre. Pero si puede alcanzar la civilización, ¿sanarán sus heridas... o comenzarán sus problemas?”. Ese es el comienzo de una historia escrita, dibujada a lápiz, entintada y coloreada por el artista croata, y el resultado es absolutamente impresionante.

No tenía idea de que Ribić era un escritor tan maravilloso, y hace lo más difícil que puede hacer un escritor: contar una historia silenciosa. Según mi propia experiencia, cuando se trata de escribir cómics, existen básicamente 3 niveles de dificultad, en el primer nivel, el fácil, un escritor usa todo lo que tiene a su disposición, globos de pensamiento, cajas de texto, grandes diálogos de exposición para explicar lo que está sucediendo, etc. Ningún buen escritor permanece en ese primer nivel. En el segundo nivel, el intermedio, un escritor se enfoca en la narración de historias y reemplaza las cajas de texto y los globos de pensamiento con viñetas que transmitirán esa información visualmente. En el tercer nivel, el difícil, un escritor elimina todo el texto. Si uno puede contar una historia sin palabras, entonces uno es verdaderamente un maestro del medio del cómic, y eso es precisamente lo que Ribić demuestra en las páginas de Éxodo.

En este entorno de "hombre versus naturaleza", solo puedo pensar en maestros como los italianos Berardi y Milazzo, que podían contar una historia conmovedora e impactante en 20 páginas silenciosas. Nuevamente, no es una tarea fácil contar una historia completa sin que tu protagonista pronuncie una sola palabra. Pero Ribić no necesita oraciones ni diálogos, porque una de sus imágenes vale al menos mil palabras. Desde la extraordinaria portada en la que Conan apuñala a un lobo con un arma improvisada, hasta el impresionante arte interior en el que Conan debe huir de los otros lobos de la manada, todo lo que necesitamos ver para comprender lo que está sucediendo está ahí, y el silencio crea una tensión dramática aún mayor que cualquier otra cosa. Ribić también nos hace darnos cuenta de cuán desesperado está Conan y de cómo el hambre lo obliga a tomar las decisiones más imprudentes. La belleza absoluta de las líneas de Ribić, sus diseños armónicos y su delicado equilibrio cromático convierten cada página en una obra de arte única.

The Road to Civil War - Bendis & Maleev

A decade ago, Marvel Comics released Civil War, a saga that would be tremendously popular and quite polemic too. Brian Michel Bendis and Alex Maleev were the creative team behind The New Avengers Illuminati One-Shot (published in May 2006), which was the official prologue of Civil War. It’s a captivating tale about power intrigues and the friendship or animosity between the world’s mightiest heroes.

The first scene takes place in the past, in a secret meeting held by Iron Man (leader of The Avengers and, one might also argue, representative of the military-industrial complex), Doctor Strange (Sorcerer Supreme and possibly one of Earth’s most powerful heroes), Charles Xavier (founder of The X-Men and representative of the mutants community), Reed Richards (head of the Fantastic Four and representative of the scientific community), Black Bolt (King of the Inhumans and heir of the incommensurable potential of the Celestials), Namor (Prince of Atlantis and Lord of the Seven Seas) and Black Panther (King of Wakanda and proud representative of the world’s most technologically advanced nation).

In their first meeting, the seven heroes discuss what they can do to prevent threats of a global scale and eliminate them before they get out of hand. Each one of them can influence the decisions of many superheroes, and together, they can change the course of the future. However, Black Panther decides he doesn’t want to be a part of the Illuminati, as he believes that keeping secrets from the rest of the heroes is a not a good strategy. 

Through the years, the Illuminati continue to meet, but the inner tensions start to tear them apart. Bendis really excels at communicating the exasperation and anger these heroes feel. They may be powerful and even invincible, but they are still very human. And certainly, the more powerful they are, the easier they’re misled by their hubris. Namor sees that clearly when he accuses Tony Stark and Reed Richards of neglecting their friends, while earning millions of dollars thanks to their patents and inventions. Unlike the mutants, Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic are loved by the public and their success as heroes has been quite profitable for them.

In every meeting, a member of the Illuminati resigns; after heated debates they don’t come to an agreement on how to deal with the problems at hand. Throughout the issue, Bendis presents some really original concepts, like the idea of a superhero delegation as big as the UN (which, in Doctor Strange’s opinion, would only crumble under the weight of its own bureaucracy). Or the fact that the Hulk is directly or indirectly responsible for the death of innocent bystanders (a fact that persuades Iron Man to punish the Hulk by banishing from our solar system).

But the most important moment is revealed in the final pages, when Iron Man talks about the Superhero Registration Act, a law that requires all superheroes to reveal their secret identities and to work for S.H.I.E.L.D., obeying orders and respecting the chain of command, something which of course no superhero has ever done before. It’s in that moment when Doctor Strange expresses his concerns and quits, labeling Stark’s initiative as “disgusting”. In the end, Only Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic remain as allies. The Illuminati may no longer exist, but a civil war, a battle between heroes, is now inevitable. 

Bendis returns for the final chapter of this story: Civil War: The Confession (May 2007), a bittersweet epilogue that reunites Iron Man and his adversary Captain America. This is an introspective and mature story with some very memorable sequences. Iron Man shares his doubts about his leadership qualities, and tries to explain why he made some regrettable decisions. “We had to work within the system. We had to work with the leaders that the people of this country voted to represent them”, explains Tony Stark. And Steve Rogers gives one of his typically assertive answers: “we maintained the principles we swore to defend and protect. You sold your principles”.

We should thank the extraordinary Alex Maleev for maintaining the artistic integrity of both the prologue and the epilogue. His unique style and the strength of his lines reinforce the dramatic elements in Bendis’s script. The spectacular coloring is provided by Dave Stewart and José Villarrubia. Maleev also drew the cover of The Confession, and the magnificent cover of the Illuminati is illustrated by the talented Italian artist Gabriele Dell'Otto.

Esta es una historia cautivadora sobre las intrigas de poder y la amistad o la animadversión entre los héroes más poderosos del mundo.

La primera escena ocurre en el pasado, en una reunión secreta dirigida por Iron Man (líder de los Vengadores y, como también podría ser argumentado, representante del complejo militar-industrial), Doctor Strange (Hechicero Supremo y, posiblemente, uno de los héroes más poderosos de la Tierra), Charles Xavier (fundador de los X-Men y representante de la comunidad mutante), Reed Richards (jefe de los Cuatro Fantásticos y representante de la comunidad científica), Black Bolt (Rey de los Inhumanos y heredero del potencial inconmensurable de los Celestiales), Namor (Príncipe de Atlantis y señor de los siete mares) y Black Panther (Rey de Wakanda y orgulloso representante de la nación más tecnológicamente avanzada del mundo).

En su primera reunión, los siete héroes discuten lo que pueden hacer para prevenir amenazas de escala global y eliminarlas antes de que se salgan de control. Cada uno de ellos puede influir en las decisiones de muchos superhéroes, y juntos, pueden cambiar el futuro. Sin embargo, Black Panther decide que no quiere ser parte de los Illuminati, ya que cree que guardar secretos y ocultar la verdad al resto de los héroes no es una buena estrategia.

A través de los años, los Illuminati continúan reuniéndose, pero las tensiones internas empiezan a separarlos. Bendis realmente sobresale al momento de comunicar la exasperación y la rabia que estos héroes sienten. Pueden ser muy poderosos e incluso invencibles, pero siguen siendo sobre todo humanos. Y, desde luego, por más poderosos que sean, son fácilmente engañados por su propia arrogancia. Namor se da cuenta de eso rápidamente, y acusa a Tony Stark y a Reed Richards de descuidar a sus amigos, mientras ganan millones de dólares gracias a sus patentes e inventos. A diferencia de los mutantes, Iron Man y Mr. Fantástico son amados por el público y su éxito como héroes les ha resultado sumamente rentable.

En cada reunión, un miembro de los Illuminati renuncia; después de intensos debates ellos no llegan a un acuerdo sobre cómo hacer frente a los grandes problemas. A lo largo de este cómic, Bendis presenta algunos conceptos muy originales, como la idea de una delegación de superhéroes tan grande como la ONU (que, en opinión de Doctor Strange, solamente se derrumbaría bajo el peso de su propia burocracia). O el hecho de que Hulk es directa o indirectamente responsable de la muerte de personas inocentes (un hecho que persuade a Iron Man a castigar a Hulk, desterrandolo de nuestro sistema solar).

Pero el momento más importante es revelado en las páginas finales, cuando Iron Man habla de la Ley de Registro de superhéroes, una ley que requiere que todos los superhéroes revelen sus identidades secretas y trabajen para  S.H.I.E.L.D., obedeciendo órdenes y respetando la cadena de mando, algo que ningún superhéroe ha hecho antes. Es en ese momento cuando Doctor Strange expresa sus preocupaciones y renuncia, calificando la iniciativa de Stark como algo “repugnante”. Al final, sólo Iron Man y Mr. Fantástico permanecen como aliados. Los Illuminati ya no existen, pero una guerra civil, una batalla entre los héroes, ahora es inevitable.

Bendis regresa para el capítulo final de esta historia: “Civil War: The Confession” (mayo del 2007), un epílogo agridulce que reúne a Iron Man y a su adversario Captain America. Esta es una historia introspectiva y madura con secuencias más que memorables. Iron Man comparte sus dudas acerca de su capacidad de liderazgo, y trata de explicar por qué tomó decisiones tan lamentables. “Teníamos que trabajar dentro del sistema.
