Lo mejor del arte en Lima - 2013

2013 wasn’t precisely a good year for me, sure, during the first months there were many promising things going on and then, like in a drought, it all vanished. 

Luckily, I can gladly say that I had the chance to contribute with my comics and have them published at least on 3 occasions: Sci-Fi/Horror (OGN), Erotica (one-shot), and Ghost Stories. 


I also wish that I had completed Un-American Chronicles, my own comic, before the end of the year, but turns out you will have to wait a couple of months before reading it. I’m very impatient to finally hold it in my hands, it will be the first comic I’ve done that has my name on the cover. Isn’t that just fantastic?


Anyway, I’m sure 2014 will be a much a better year. At least, you’ll get to read my stories in the "You Are Not Alone" trade paperback, in "Cities" and probably in some other title.


As you all know, besides comic books I also talk about art here. Contemporary art.  Peruvian contemporary art. You may not be familiar with the following names but, I promise you, they are really good.

* In MATE we had the works of very famous European artists such as Henry Bourne, Thomas Ruff, Dan Colen, Keith Haring, Sarah Lucas, Douglas Gordon, Steven Shearer, Anselm Reyle, Thomas Houseago, George Condo, Lucy Birkhead, Rachel Feinstein (my favorite) and Waled Beshty, and more.


In my next post you’ll find out which were the finest authors and best comic books of 2013. Yes, it’s the third edition of the famous and prestigious AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards). It usually takes me a long time to complete this list, and this year it has been particularly difficult because there were a lot more comics than last year. 

Once the AAA is done, I can categorically affirm that the year is officially over.

Tomás Prochazka Núñez

El año empezó lleno de ilusiones y buenos augurios, pero luego de una rápida evaluación puedo constatar que mucho de lo que planifiqué simplemente quedó en el aire. No obstante, me enorgullece haber  publicado cómics en tres ocasiones (ya sea como escritor o dibujante) durante el 2013: Sci Fi/Horror (novela gráfica), Erotica (one-shot), y Ghost Stories.

El 2014 empieza más que nada con incertidumbre. Sobre todo luego de decirle adiós al Grupo Editorial COSAS. Trabajar en la revistas COSAS sin duda ha sido una experiencia sumamente enriquecedora; realmente llegué a encariñarme con la gente de la oficina y, de hecho, me alegra mucho seguir encontrándome con ellos en inauguraciones, cocteles y eventos similares. 

No obstante, al margen de aquello que funcionó o dejó de funcionar, este año mi pasión por el arte me llevó a innumerables muestras y creo que es justo, y hasta necesario, establecer en líneas generales un balance de lo mejor del arte en Lima.

En el 2011 vi por primera vez la extraordinaria obra de Hugo Salazar y quedé deslumbrado. En esta ocasión el ICPNA de Miraflores presentó “ExcluidoS al azar”, muestra que confirma el enorme talento de Hugo Salazar, sin lugar a dudas, el mejor artista del 2013.

El premio a la mejor muestra individual va para “Un día en la vida” (Galería Enlace), de Renzo Núñez Melgar Vega, más conocido como REVE. Durante un año visité a REVE en su taller barranquino y documenté fotográficamente su proceso creativo; y luego de tanto tiempo me encantó ver los impresionantes cuadros, ya terminados, en la sala de la galería.

Asistí a muchas colectivas pero la más impresionante fue la 74º exposición anual de la facultad de arte de la PUCP. Debo resaltar los trabajos de Aldo Romero Scattolon, Alejandra Gálvez, Mayra Chipana y Renzo Bazán Marroquín.

El año pasado comenté lo mucho que me había fascinado la obra de Tomás Prochazka Núñez. En ese momento afirmé que el joven artista nos sorprendería gratamente en el futuro, y por suerte, no tuvimos que esperar mucho para que así fuese. En el 2013, Tomás compartió con nosotros sus más originales y alucinantes pinturas en espacios como el Bisetti de Barranco y su propia alma máter, Corriente Alterna. 

Iosu Aramburu plantea una propuesta interesante y profunda en “Todo lo sólido” (Galería 80M2). Es importante reconocer que una obra adquiere mayor validez siempre y cuando se fundamente en una propuesta óptima. Duchamp lo sabía, y cada vez más los artistas de nuestro medio entienden que es necesario acompañar la acción de pintar con la de pensar.

Poder visitar una retrospectiva de Picasso es, sin duda, un auténtico lujo. “El eterno femenino” presenta 67 obras del inmortal artista español. La muestra abarca diversas décadas de su producción (años 30, 40, 50 y 60) así como diversos estilos e influencias (clasicismo, renacimiento, cubismo, etc.) y variadas técnicas y soportes (litografía, aguada, gouache, etc.). Visité el CCPUCP en un buen momento, y de hecho tuve la sala de exposiciones para mí solo así que pude pasearme con calma y admirar cada una de las obras en exhibición. Realmente ha sido una maravilla, no solamente es la muestra más imprescindible del año sino también una de las más importantes que ha habido en Lima en la última década. “El eterno femenino” permanecerá en nuestro país hasta el 26 de enero. 

“Somos Libres” es un lúcido testimonio de Mario Testino sobre el arte contemporáneo. MATE (Asociación Mario Testino) ha convocado a importantísimos artistas europeos y el resultado es una muestra imperdible que estará abierta al público limeño hasta el 6 de abril del 2014. En esta colectiva participan Henry Bourne, Thomas Ruff, Miguel Andrade Valdez, Dan Colen, Keith Haring, Sarah Lucas, Douglas Gordon, Steven Shearer, Anselm Reyle, Thomas Houseago, George Condo, Lucy Birkhead, Rachel Feinstein (mi favorita) y Waled Beshty, entre otros.

November Comic Books / cómics de noviembre

It’s time to say Merry Christmas. There’s an old saying that goes “the more the merrier”, and that applies perfectly to comics! I read two wonderful Young Avengers issues, and I was nicely surprised by Jason Aaron’s high level of quality (Wolverine & X-Men, Thor God of Thunder and Thanos Rising have been very good). Velvet # 1 was such an extraordinary comic (and it had some of the most beautiful Epting pages I've ever seen). This month we say goodbye to Unwritten, Vertigo's finest ongoing series (there will be one final miniseries next year, though). And I loved Guardians of the Galaxy. Kick-Ass was amazing but if I had to choose my two favorite books of the month they would be Sandman Overture and Alex + Ada (both first issues). And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

Es hora de decir feliz navidad. Y además de buena compañía también he tenido muchos buenos cómics. Leí dos maravillosos números de “Young Avengers” y Jason Aaron me sorprendió favorablemente con un alto nivel de calidad (“Wolverine & X-Men”, “Thor God of Thunder” y “Thanos Rising” han sido muy buenos). Velvet # 1 fue un cómic extraordinario (con las más hermosas páginas de Epting que he visto). Este mes decimos adiós a Unwritten, la mejor serie continua de Vertigo (aunque habrá una miniserie final el próximo año). Y me encantó Guardians of the Galaxy. Kick-Ass fue asombroso pero si tuviera que elegir mis dos títulos favoritos del mes serían “Sandman Overture” y “Alex + Ada” (ambos primeros números). Y ahora sin más preámbulos, aquí van los cómics de noviembre.

Hawkeye vol. 1 - Fraction & Aja

Hawkeye breezes in, nonchalantly, suggesting that there is something else going on in the lives of masked heroes. Or at least it should be. Like fresh air, Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye intends to re-oxygenate the clogged arteries of the House of Ideas. 

Every writer wants to be original, every author wants to do something new with well-established characters. But where is the novelty in a hero that has existed for decades and that is –very likely– older than your parents? “New” isn’t the superheroic antics, that’s for sure, after all, we’ve read thousands of stories about do-gooders kicking the villain’s ass. And that gets old. Way too fast. So how can you recapture the reader’s attention? Fraction has an idea: let’s forget about the Avengers, the larger-than-life threats, the cosmic dangers, and let’s keep our feet in the ground and, above all, let’s have fun. 

Enters… Hawkguy! He isn’t Hawkeye, the world-famous adventurer and founding member of the Avengers. He’s Hawkguy, just a guy, a regular Joe trying to survive in the streets of New York, paying his rent, rescuing pizza-loving dogs, sleeping around –yes, even if that means cheating on his friend-girl– getting a divorce and so on.

Enters… Pizza Dog! The cutest and smartest pet since Krypto, the super canine. When Clint Barton is attacked by Russian mobsters, bro, a dog saves his life. The dog, of course, pays for the effrontery. Clint takes the dog to the nearest veterinarian, and although the initial prognosis is quite negative Clint insists on his demands: the dog must be saved. Oh, and my favorite episode (issue # 11): Pizza Dog versus the Russian mob, bro! I’ve always loved nice doggies, but Pizza Dog sure deserves an award for best fictional pet of the year!

Enters… Hawkeye (Not the Hawkguy). While Pizza Dog is in rehabilitation, Kate Bishop decides to hang out with the expert archer. Only to prove, over and over again, that she’s better with a bow and an arrow, more resourceful, intelligent… in short, the best ally Clint could ask for. 

Enters… the Russian mobsters, bro. A group of tracksuit-wearing, machinegun-firing, bro-cursing gangsters. And they’re angry because Clint Barton has stopped them from increasing the rent in his building… by buying the whole damn thing. And they are also mad at him because he has stolen money from the Kingpin, the Owl and many of New York’s most corrupted and powerful men. 

Fraction combines a lighthearted approach with a retro sensibility that has caused much furor amongst Marvel fans, just like Mark Waid’s Daredevil. Coincidentally –or not so much– both series are defined by a highly stylized art signature, by the ubiquity of design and the notion that a comic book artist should be well-versed in graphic design endeavors. The result is a visual delight that challenges the rules of a “normal” comic book. Spanish artist David Aja surprises us with his innovative page layouts and his notably uncommon panels. 

A dangerous sexual escapade / una peligrosa escapada sexual

Matt Hollingsworth also provides some of the best coloring I’ve seen in a long time. Playing with a minimalistic approach, a color palette of solid tones and constant chromatic reiterations, he manages to create a very unique feel. Hollingsworth is one of the best colorists of the industry but here he has achieved something truly outstanding.

Hawkguy’s triumph relies on two premises: a retro sensitivity that translates in a very amusing narrative structure and the episodic nature of the title. Unlike the hundreds of regular Marvel comics we see each month, Hawkeye never –not even once– falls in the trap of the six-issue arc. Au contraire, most issues are stand-alone adventures that can be read and enjoyed by themselves. In fact, the largest saga of the first volume is The Tape (illustrated by Javier Pulido), encompassing two issues. Now, I can’t remember the last time I saw somebody doing a two-part story. You don’t get to see much of that nowadays. All writers should forget about the six-issue arc, just like Fraction does here.

The narrative structure, on the other hand, is quite funny. Fraction shuffles pages like a card deck, playing with time and the sequential order of events. But one thing is for sure, at least in half of the 11 issues of the volume, Hawkguy fights against his enemies, mostly the Russians, bro, and gets hit in the head; then he is either left unconscious and / or temporarily kidnapped by the Russians, bro, or someone else, at which point he’s mocked and ridiculed for his clumsiness. Thanks to Fraction’s pervading whimsical tone, these moments get funnier and funnier with each issue, highlighting the fact that Hawkguy is an average man, without superpowers, magic amulets or ultra-advanced technology. Ironically, this superhero without superpowers turned into a super-popular character in 2012, receiving many Eisner nominations. I’ve been waiting over a year to get my hands on the deluxe hardcover edition and I’m thrilled to hold it in my hands now. It sure was worth the wait. I must say thank you to the good friend that sent it to me as a Christmas gift.

Hawkeye, Wolverine & Spider-Man

"Hawkeye" llega con desfachatez, sugiriendo que hay algo más en las vidas de los héroes enmascarados. O debería haberlo. Como una bocanada de aire fresco, "Hawkeye" de Matt Fraction intenta re-oxigenar las arterias tapadas de la Casa de las Ideas. 

Todo escritor quiere ser original, todo autor quiere hacer algo nuevo con personajes bien establecidos. Pero ¿dónde está la novedad en un héroe que ha existido por décadas y que es -muy probablemente- más viejo que tus padres? Lo “nuevo” no está en las payasadas superheroicas, sin duda, después de todo, hemos leído miles de historias sobre bienhechores pateando al villano en el culo. Y esto se hace repetitivo. Y mucho. Así que ¿cómo puedes recapturar la atención del lector? Fraction tiene una idea: olvidémonos de los Vengadores, de las amenazas más grandes que la vida, los peligros cósmicos, y pongamos los pies sobre la tierra y, por encima de todo, divirtámonos. 

Llega… ¡Hawkguy! Él no es Hawkeye, el mundialmente famoso aventurero y miembro fundador de los Vengadores. Él es Hawkguy, un tipo común y corriente que intenta sobrevivir en las calles de New York, pagar el alquiler, rescatar a perros que adoran la pizza, follar -sí, incluso si eso significa engañar a su chica-,  divorciarse, etc.

Hawkguy

Llega… ¡Pizza Dog! La mascota más tierna y pícara desde Krypto, el súper canino. Cuando Clint Barton es atacado por la mafia rusa, mano, un perro salva su vida. Llegan… los mafiosos rusos, mano. Un grupo de gánsteres que usan sudaderas, disparan metralletas y dicen mano. Y están furiosos porque Clint Barton impidió que subieran el alquiler en su edificio... comprándolo todo. Y también están molestos porque él le ha robado dinero a Kingpin, Owl y muchos de los hombres más corruptos y poderosos de New York.

Fraction combina un tono ligero con una sensibilidad retro que ha causado mucho furor entre los fans de Marvel, al igual que el "Daredevil" de Mark Waid. Es una coincidencia –o quizás no– que ambas series se definan por una rúbrica artística altamente estilizada, por la ubicuidad del diseño y por la noción de que un artista del cómic debería estar bien versado en las labores del diseño gráfico. El resultado es una delicia visual que reta las normas de un cómic “normal”. El artista español David Aja nos sorprende con sus innovadoras páginas y sus viñetas notablemente fuera de lo común.

Pizza Dog

Matt Hollingsworth también proporciona el mejor coloreado que he visto en mucho tiempo. Jugando con un enfoque minimalista, una paleta de color de tonos sólidos y constantes reiteraciones cromáticas, se las arregla para crear algo único. Hollingsworth es uno de los mejores coloristas de la industria pero aquí logra algo realmente admirable.

El triunfo de Hawkguy se apoya en dos premisas: una sensibilidad retro que se traduce en una estructura narrativa muy amena y la naturaleza episódica del título. A diferencia del centenar de cómics Marvel que vemos cada mes, Hawkeye nunca –ni siquiera una sola vez– cae en la trampa del arco argumental de 6 números. Al contrario, la mayoría de los números son aventuras auto-conclusivas, que pueden disfrutarse independientemente de las demás. De hecho, la saga más grande del primer volumen es "La cinta" (con ilustraciones de Javier Pulido), que abarca dos números. No puedo recordar la última vez que vi a alguien haciendo una historia en dos partes. Es algo que ya no se ve hoy en día. Todos los escritores deberían olvidarse del arco argumental de 6 números, tal como lo hace Fraction.

La estructura narrativa, por otro lado, es bastante chistosa. Fraction baraja las páginas como si fueran naipes, jugando con el tiempo y el orden secuencial de los eventos. Pero hay una constante, al menos en la mitad de los 11 números del volumen, Hawkguy se pelea contra sus enemigos, sobre todo con la mafia rusa, mano, y es golpeado en la cabeza; luego es dejado inconsciente y/o es secuestrado temporalmente por los rusos, mano, o por alguien más, y entonces es humillado o ridiculizado por su torpeza. Gracias al saturado y caprichoso tono de Fraction, estos momentos son más y más divertidos en cada número, resaltando el hecho de que Hawkguy es un hombre promedio, sin poderes, amuletos mágicos o tecnología ultra-avanzada. Irónicamente, este superhéroe sin superpoderes se convirtió en un personaje súper-popular en el 2012, recibiendo muchas nominaciones al Eisner. He estado esperando más de un año para poner mis manos en la edición de lujo en tapa dura y me entusiasma poder sujetarla en estos momentos. Sin duda la espera valió la pena. Debo darle las gracias al buen amigo que me la envió como regalo de navidad.

JLA Earth 2 - Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely

The good guys always win. Evildoers are doomed to a life of failure. Superman always defeats Lex Luthor, Batman always kicks Joker’s ass. Traditional superhero comics have focused, for decades, on the triumph of the forces of good. Any reader knows this, but this is isn’t a surprise, after all, even when we go to the movies we expect to see the good guys victorious at the end. 

Obstacles can be hard, villains can be dangerous. None of it matters. If you have your heart on the right side, then you shall be blessed with a happy ending. Grant Morrison, like any other reader, knows this. But instead of simply ignoring the conventionalisms of the superhero genre, he tweaks them a little bit. If superheroes are the undisputed champions of our world, what would happen in a mirror dimension, in which everything works backwards?

Crime Syndicate of Amerika / Sindicato del Crimen de Amerika

In this second planet Earth, the good guys always lose, evil plans are always successful. The Crime Syndicate of Amerika reigns supreme in a world plagued by corruption, depravation and malevolence. Ultraman (the equivalent of Superman) has defeated Lex Luthor over and over again. But as Earth’s last superhero, Luthor must never surrender; and so he uses his genius and his intellect to subdue the CSA. Luthor’s strategy is brilliant. Using alien technology he travels to our world, a world inhabited by noble men and women, a world protected by the Justice League of America. 

The first time I saw the Crime Syndicate of Amerika was in the pages of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Ultraman (Superman), Owl-Man (Batman), Superwoman (Wonder Woman), Johnny Quick (Flash) and Power Ring (Green Lantern) are powerless before the antimatter wave that is devouring the universe. And although their appearance is brief, there was something very appealing about this group of villains inspired in the world’s greatest heroes. 

Morrison, of course, explores the fascinating dynamics of a world dominated by the CSA. And what’s even more impressive is the way in which the Scottish writer fleshes out the personalities of these 5 despots. Ultraman is the opposite of Superman, he has no respect for privacy and with his superior abilities he spies on every single person in the world. He is the Orwellian Big Brother but exponentially more powerful.

Superwoman’s secret identity in this parallel dimension is Lois Lane. But she isn’t the Lois Lane we know: a honest, hardworking and loyal reporter. She is a liar and a provocateur. In fact she cheats on Ultraman all the time, mostly with Owl-Man, but that barely covers her nymphomaniac urges, and she even participates in a degenerate game of fetishism and voyeurism with a very perverted Jimmy Olsen.

Owl-Man is Bruce Wayne. His greatest enemy is his own father, Thomas Wayne; and his greatest ally is Commissioner Gordon, the most corrupted man in Gotham City. Johnny Quick has super-speed thanks to his addiction to a mysterious substance, a drug that he shoots in his arm with the ferocity of a junkie. Power Ring is also a slave of his ring, so instead of the will power of Green Lantern his main characteristic is his submissiveness.

Lex Luthor

When the JLA visits Earth 2, they think they can help this world. They even beat the CSA. But soon they understand that even without the tyrants, everyone in this world is a potential dictator, murderer or criminal. Nothing they do can ever work there. And what’s worse, during this visit, the CSA manages to break the dimensional barrier and they invade our Earth. 

I was very seduced by the idea of fatality. By the notion that, no matter what Lex Luthor does as a hero, he is doomed to fail. And fail he does. Because not even the JLA can bring peace to a tormented world. But, at the same time, when the CSA attacks our dimension, they are easily defeated by Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. Because that’s the way it always works in the comics: the good guys win; the bad guys never have a chance, no matter how much effort they put into it or how effective their stratagems are. Although, at the end of this original graphic novel we can’t really talk about the JLA’s triumph. Sure, they manage to save their world, but they lose the fight in the parallel dimension. There, the CSA continues to reign supreme. And this encounter between two different realities and two different states of mind has left a profound scar in those who defend justice and those who preserve injustice.

Frank Quitely has some truly extraordinary pages here. I love the design of Lex Luthor’s office, and the decoration of the CSA’s bathroom. The scene between Superwoman and Jimmy Olsen is terrific, you can almost see the guy drooling over her. Morrison and Quitely once again prove why they’re one of the most sought-after creative teams. JLA Earth 2 is one of the most creative and entertaining DC graphic novels of the past decade.

Los buenos siempre ganan. Los malhechores están condenados a una vida de fracasos. Superman siempre derrota a Lex Luthor, Batman siempre le patea el trasero al Joker. Los cómics tradicionales de superhéroes se han enfocado, por décadas, en el triunfo de las fuerzas del bien. Cualquier lector lo sabe, esto no es ninguna sorpresa, después de todo, incluso cuando vamos al cine esperamos que los buenos salgan victoriosos. 

A strange bathroom meeting / una extraña reunión en el baño

Los obstáculos pueden ser difíciles, los villanos pueden ser peligrosos. Nada de esto importa. Si tienes el corazón del lado correcto, entonces serás bendecido con un final feliz. Grant Morrison, como cualquier lector, lo sabe. Pero en vez de simplemente ignorar los convencionalismos del género superheroico, los retuerce un poco. Si los superhéroes son los campeones indisputados de nuestro mundo, ¿qué pasaría en una dimensión paralela, en la que todo funciona al revés?

En este segundo planeta Tierra, los buenos siempre pierden, los planes malévolos siempre son exitosos. El Sindicato del Crimen de Amerika reina supremo en un mundo plagado por la corrupción, la depravación y la malignidad. Ultraman (el equivalente a Superman) ha vencido a Lex Luthor una y otra vez. Pero al ser el último superhéroe de la Tierra, Luthor jamás debe rendirse; así que usa su genio y su intelecto para someter a la SCA. La estrategia de Luthor es brillante. Usa tecnología alienígena para viajar a nuestro mundo, un mundo habitado por hombres y mujeres nobles, un mundo protegido por la Liga de la Justicia de América. 

La primera vez que vi al Sindicato del Crimen de Amerika fue en las páginas de "Crisis en Tierras Infinitas". Ultraman (Superman), Owl-Man (Batman), Superwoman (Wonder Woman), Johnny Quick (Flash) y Power Ring (Green Lantern) eran impotentes ante la antimateria que devoraba el universo. Y aunque su aparición era breve, había algo muy atrayente en este grupo de villanos inspirados en los más grandes héroes del mundo.

Morrison, por supuesto, explora la fascinante dinámica de un mundo dominado por la SCA. Y lo más impresionante es la forma en la que el escritor escocés perfila las personalidades de estos 5 déspotas. Ultraman es lo opuesto a Superman, no tiene ningún respeto por la privacidad y con sus habilidades superiores espía a todas las personas del mundo. Él es el gran hermano Orwelliano pero exponencialmente más poderoso.

Superwoman & Jimmy Olsen

En esta dimensión paralela, la identidad secreta de Superwoman es Lois Lane. Pero ella no es la Lois Lane que conocemos: una reportera honesta, trabajadora y leal. Ella es una mentirosa y una provocadora. De hecho, le saca la vuelta a Ultraman todo el tiempo, sobre todo con Owl-Man, pero eso apenas cubre sus necesidades ninfomaníacas, e incluso participa en un juego degenerado de fetichismo y voyerismo con un Jimmy Olsen muy pervertido.

Aquaman versus Power Ring

Owl-Man es Bruce Wayne. Su mayor enemigo es su propio padre, Thomas Wayne; y su más grande aliado es el comisionado Gordon, el hombre más corrupto de Gotham City. Johnny Quick tiene súper-velocidad gracias a su adicción a una misteriosa substancia, una droga que se inyecta en el brazo con la ferocidad de un adicto. Power Ring (Anillo de Poder) es también un esclavo de su anillo, así que en vez de tener el poder de voluntad de Green Lantern su principal característica es su sumisión.

Cuando la JLA visita Tierra 2, creen que pueden ayudar a este mundo. Incluso vencen a la SCA. Pero entienden que sin los tiranos, todos en este mundo son dictadores potenciales, asesinos o criminales. Nada de lo que hagan podrá funcionar allí. Y lo peor es que, durante esta visita, la SCA se las arregla para romper la barrera dimensional e invadir nuestra Tierra.

Me sedujo mucho la idea de la fatalidad. La noción de que, sin importar lo que haga Lex Luthor como héroe, está condenado a fracasar. Y fracasa. Porque ni siquiera la JLA puede traer la paz a un mundo atormentado. Pero, al mismo tiempo, cuando la SCA ataca nuestra dimensión, son fácilmente derrotados por Aquaman y Martian Manhunter. Porque así es como el asunto funciona siempre en los cómics: los buenos ganan, los malos nunca tienen ni una oportunidad, sin importar cuánto se esfuercen o qué tan efectivas sean sus estratagemas. Aunque, al final de esta novela gráfica original no podemos hablar realmente de un triunfo de la JLA. Claro que salvan su mundo, pero pierden la pelea en la dimensión paralela. Allí, la SCA continúa al mando. Y este encuentro entre dos realidades diferentes y dos estados mentales deja una profunda cicatriz en aquellos que defienden la justicia y aquellos que preservan la injusticia.

Frank Quitely tiene algunas páginas verdaderamente extraordinarias. Me encanta el diseño de la oficina de Lex Luthor, y la decoración del baño de la SCA. La escena entre Superwoman y Jimmy Olsen es estupenda, casi podemos ver cómo el chico se babea por ella. Morrison y Quitely una vez más demuestran por qué son uno de los equipos creativos más premiados. "JLA Earth 2" es una de las novelas gráficas de DC más creativas y entretenidas de la última década.

The Best of Milligan & McCarthy

Half a year ago I was reading Dark Horse’s solicitations and I found “The Best of Milligan & McCarthy”. I had no idea it was a gorgeous, deluxe edition. I just paid attention to the names. I’ve been a big fan of Peter Milligan and Brendan McCarthy for over a decade.

As British authors they both honed their abilities in the pages of 2000AD, Milligan as a writer and McCarthy as an artist. Together, they were an amazing creative team. I admired Milligan’s narrative talent in “Dark Night, Dark City” one of my favorite Batman sagas (3 brilliant issues), I was fascinated by his reinterpretation of Shade, the Changing Man for Vertigo in the 90s and I loved his X-Force and X-Statix for Marvel a few years ago. As for McCarthy, his art on some Judge Dredd stories frightened me when I was around 8 or 9 years old; he was that good. Because, you see, there is always a certain degree of madness in McCarthy’s composition, a certain dementia in his designs, and also so much richness in his colors. 

For years, I saw the works of Milligan with other artists and the art of McCarthy for other writers. And my wish was to see them together. Turns out, I had missed their greatest collaborations. Luckily for me, Dark Horse editors Mike Richardson and Brendan Wright decided it was about time to rescue some of the most wonderful comics ever published and give them the deluxe treatment they so justly deserved. Announced several months in advance, I was impatient to see the book. When I finally received it I felt like a little boy in Christmas getting the present he had been waiting for the entire year. The edition is beautiful, much better than the deluxe editions from other companies. 

I had so much fun reading this that I had the need to share with you, my readers, how awesome it was. By now you’ve probably read my reviews on Paradax, Rogan Gosh, Skin, Mirkin the Mystic and Freakwave. But this volume includes many other extraordinary works such as Electro Hoax, Roaring’s Rantin’s, Summer of Love, The Hollow Circus and Sooner or Later.

Electro Hoax is a black and white horizontal comic strip that reunites some of Milligan’s wildest and craziest concepts. It’s quite old and here we can see McCarthy working specifically for a black and white publication. This is really the only story in traditional black and white, and later on McCarthy would surprise all his readers with his stunning coloring techniques. Most artists are either good at penciling or inking, some are good at both things, but it’s very rare to find artists that excel at penciling, inking and coloring. McCarthy is one of them.

Roaring’s Rantin’s is a hilarious chronicle about two old gay men that live in the post-apocalyptic world of Freakwave. Instead of finding survivors they visit other gay men that are still ‘active’ in their social calendar, and together they have fun in some really bizarre parties that reminds us that this is, indeed, an alternative future. Some lines made me laugh until I started choking: “Stuff ‘n nonsense. I used to twist that silly little arse round me fingers”. And McCarthy’s art is so charming here, intensifying the surrealistic surroundings.

Summer of Love is a bittersweet comic strip published in a newspaper that was declared in bankruptcy so the ending is a bit abrupt. The protagonist is a 17-year-old boy that falls in love with a girl that is obsessed with her modeling career. Together, they explore a coast town that receives neither attention nor tourism; lost in the map, this is a place that nobody gives a damn about. 

The Hollow Circus is a very experimental comic first included in the A1 anthology (Atomeka Press). For some, this may be a very disturbing story about a hunchback with pedophiliac tendencies, but I think this was a conscientious effort on behalf of Milligan and McCarthy to do something disturbing. They both tried something very new, thematically and artistically (here McCarthy’s highly experimental art is similar to Dave McKean’s style).

Sooner or Later, finally, is the only one I was familiar with. I had the chance to read the first chapters a couple of years ago (I found them as backups in Fleetway’s edition of Alan Moore’s Halo Jones). Tony Riot and Brendan McCarthy work together as artists, and the result is spectacular.

McCarthy's experimental art / el arte experimental de McCarthy

Hace medio año estaba leyendo las solicitaciones de Dark Horse y encontré “The Best of Milligan & McCarthy”. No tenía ni idea de que se trataba de una preciosa edición de lujo. Sólo le presté atención a los nombres. He sido un gran fan de Peter Milligan y Brendan McCarthy por más de una década.

Ambos autores británicos pulieron sus habilidades en las páginas de "2000AD", Milligan como escritor y McCarthy como artista. Juntos eran un asombroso equipo creativo. Admiré el talento narrativo de Milligan en “Dark Night, Dark City” una de mis sagas favoritas de Batman (3 números brillantes), me fascinó su reinterpretación de "Shade, the Changing Man" para Vertigo en los 90s y me encantó su "X-Force" y "X-Statix" para Marvel pocos años atrás. En cuanto a McCarthy, su arte en algunas historias de Judge Dredd lograba asustarme cuando tenía 8 o 9 años; era así de bueno. Porque, verán, siempre hay un cierto grado de locura en la composición de McCarthy, una cierta demencia en sus diseños, y también tanta riqueza en sus colores. 

Por años, vi las obras de Milligan con otros artistas y el arte de McCarthy para otros escritores. Y mi deseo era verlos juntos. Resulta que me había perdido sus más grandiosas colaboraciones. Afortunadamente, Mike Richardson y Brendan Wright, editores de Dark Horse, decidieron que ya era hora de rescatar algunos de los más maravillosos cómics jamás publicadas y darles el tratamiento de lujo que tan justamente merecían. Anunciado con varios meses de antelación, estaba impaciente por ver el libro. Cuando finalmente lo recibí me sentí como un niño pequeño en navidad recibiendo el regalo que había estado esperando todo el año. La edición es hermosa, mucho mejor que las ediciones de lujo de otras editoriales.

Me divertí tanto leyendo todo esto que sentí la necesidad de compartir con ustedes, mis lectores, lo impresionante que fue. A estas alturas probablemente ya han leído mis reseñas sobre "Paradax", "Rogan Gosh", "Skin", "Mirkin the Mystic" y "Freakwave". Pero este volumen incluye muchos otros trabajos extraordinarios como "Electro Hoax", "Roaring’s Rantin’s", "Summer of Love", "The Hollow Circus" y "Sooner or Later".

"Electro Hoax" es una tira cómica horizontal a blanco y negro que reúne algunos de los más salvajes y alocados conceptos de Milligan. Es bastante vieja y aquí podemos ver a McCarthy trabajando específicamente para una publicación a blanco y negro. Esta es realmente la única historia en blanco y negro tradicional, y después McCarthy sorprendería a todos sus lectores con sus espectaculares técnicas de coloreado. La mayoría de artistas son buenos dibujando a lápiz o entintando, algunos son buenos en ambas cosas, pero es muy raro encontrar artistas que sobresalgan en el dibujo a lápiz, en la tinta y en el coloreado. McCarthy es uno de ellos.

"Roaring’s Rantin’s" es una hilarante crónica sobre dos gays viejos que viven en el mundo post-apocalíptico de "Freakwave". En vez de encontrar sobrevivientes, visitan a otros gays que todavía están ‘activos’ en el calendario social, y juntos se divierten en algunas fiestas realmente bizarras que nos recuerdan que este es, de hecho, un futuro alternativo. Algunas líneas me hicieron reír al máximo: “Sandeces y tonterías. Solía darle la vuelta a ese tonto culito con mis dedos”. Y el arte de McCarthy es tan encantador, intensificando el entorno surrealista.

"Summer of Love" es una agridulce tira cómica publicada en un periódico que se declaró en bancarrota, así que el final es un poco abrupto. El protagonista es un chico de 17 años que se enamora de una chica que está obsesionada con su carrera de modelaje. Juntos, exploran un pueblo costero que no recibe ni atención ni turismo; perdido en el mapa, este es un lugar que no le importa a nadie.

"The Hollow Circus" es un cómic muy experimental incluido en la antología "A1" (Atomeka Press). Para algunos, esta puede ser una perturbadora historia sobre un jorobado con tendencias pedofílicas, pero creo que esto fue un esfuerzo conciente de parte de Milligan y McCarthy por hacer algo perturbador. Ambos probaron algo muy nuevo, temática y artísticamente (aquí el arte sumamente experimental de  McCarthy es similar al estilo de Dave McKean).

Finalmente, "Sooner or Later" fue lo único que me resultó familiar. Había tenido la oportunidad de leer los primeros capítulos hace un par de años (los encontré como historias de respaldo en la edición de Fleetway del "Halo Jones" de Alan Moore). Tony Riot y Brendan McCarthy trabajan juntos como artistas, y el resultado es espectacular.
