Happy new year! In this special post we have December films and the Best of 2013 List. So let’s start with Captain Phillips (2013), directed by Paul Greengrass; the protagonist is a captain (Tom Hanks) in charge of a cargo ship that gets attacked by Somali pirates. Greengrass doesn’t ignore the human misery and extreme poverty of Somalia, and there are some strong images related to it, but ultimately his biggest triumph is turning this captain into a very human (and humane) hero. 

Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012) is a comedy about a divorced couple still acting as if they were married. To be honest, I only saw it because Elijah Wood was in it, but his role as the gay boss isn’t especially memorable. 
  
Written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010) is a fascinating portrait of adolescence and depression. Keir Gilchrist, a high school student, is under surveillance in a psychiatric ward due to his suicidal tendencies. There he meets Zach Galifianakis, a manic-depressive man that teaches him the importance of life, and Emma Roberts, the girl that makes him discover love. There are funny moments, and sad ones too… It’s a very inspiring take on depression and suicide. I recommend it.

Jared Leto is a handsome young man that seduces old and desperate women to steal from them in Lonely Hearts (2006), till one day he meets Salma Hayek, a psychopath and a ruthless killer. As they go on a killing spree around the country, detectives John Travolta and James Gandolfini are hot on their trail. It’s fascinating to observe how Salma Hayek gets more and more vicious, and how her partner starts having second thoughts.

I was a fan of Jesse McCartney in “Summerland” (a TV series), so I was looking forward to see him in Chernobyl Diaries (2012). Jesse McCartney and a group of young people visit an abandoned Russian city that was contaminated by Chernobyl’s nuclear accident. The atmosphere, the ruins and the idea of creatures transformed by radiation create some really scary moments. Plenty of suspense and great horror sequences! 

Another exciting horror movie is The Collection (2012), a “Saw” heir (mortal traps, gore, torture, etc.), it kept me on the edge of my seat. Emma Fitzpatrick, William Peltz and Daniel Sharman act surprisingly good.  

Andrew Gunn’s Clay (2008) is a magnificent film. Harry McEntire is a 14 year old Irish lad dealing with hormonal changes and the discovery of his own sexuality. One day, he meets Ben-Ryan Davies, a very good-looking boy with a magnetic personality. But this kid seems to have a wicked mind, and the desire to hurt and even kill people. What starts as simple psychological horror becomes more and more twisted, as the two teens give birth to a veritable golem made out of clay. Problems begin, however, when the handsome boy kisses the protagonist and they are both immediately accused of being queer. Clay is a truly hidden gem. Totally awesome.

Thure Lindhardt and Zachary Booth are a gay couple in Keep the Lights On (2012). Although at first they have great sex together and a lot of fun, Zachary’s addiction gets out of control. Living with a drug addict is like being trapped in the worst nightmare, and all this pain and intensity is aptly captured by Ira Sachs, the filmmaker.

Lee Galea’s Monster Pies (2013) is one of the best Australian productions I’ve seen in years. Tristan Barr and Lucas Linehan are two high school kids doing an assignment about an impossible love, and as they spend time together, something besides friendship takes place. In no time, the two teens are deeply in love with each other, but they can’t face theirs homophobic parents. Galea is a genuinely talented director, able to convey raw emotion, intensifying the cheer of youth as well as the sadness of loss. The end is heartbreaking. 

Alain Guiraudie’s L’inconnu du lac (2013) defies the limits between eroticism and pornography. Pierre Deladonchamps is a young man that visits a French nudist beach where dozens of gay men have anonymous sexual encounters (just like he does), until he falls in love with a man that murders his homosexual lovers. Homicide and homosexuality, anal penetration, eyaculation and non-simulated sex are part of Guiraudie’s audacious proposal.

Edwin Oyarce’s Otra película de amor (2011), is a captivating tale about two teenagers (Benjamín Prati and Aquiles Poblete) goofing around during their summer vacations; at first they simply waste their time; and what begins as weird and awkward moments soon escalates into groping, masturbation and more. But can that be enough to satisfy two horny teens? This is one of Chile’s most remarkable cinematographic achievements. 

From Denmark comes Anders Helde’s Drengen der ikke kunne svømme (2011), a touching and heartfelt approach to teen sexuality and male bonding. Sebastian Elkrog Sørensen has never met his mother and Jonas Wandschneider helps him look for her. Soon, the two teenagers realize that love between boys can be real.

Antonio Cuadri’s Eres mi héroe (2003) is the fruit of an imaginative and sensitive mind. Manuel Lozano is a 13 year old boy trying to defend himself against the school bullies; adjusting to a new town and controlling his sexual urges can be really hard, and when he becomes friends with former bully Félix López finally things start to improve. But then Generalissimo Franco dies, and suddenly Spain is in political turmoil. The protagonist and his friends are in a state of hormonal confusion, just like Spain. Manuel Lozano and Félix López are extraordinary actors. The end is so dramatic that I couldn’t stop crying. A European masterpiece. 

Hugues Burin des Roziers tackles on a controversial topic: sexual promiscuity in adolescents. Blue jeans - Du beurre aux Allemands (1977) is a coming of age tale, centered in a group of French kids that go on a school trip to England. There Gilles Budin meets Michel Gibet, a slightly older boy that makes an impression with his inimitable blue jeans. The two kids spend time together, and the younger boy feels a strange fascination towards his friend; Gilles wears his friend’s blue jeans, but that’s not enough. Soon the intimacy between the two kids raises suspicions amongst the other teens. And when Gilles is mocked for being gay, troubles start.

Robert Glinski’s Swinki (2009) is a cruel chronicle about childhood prostitution in Poland. Filip Garbacz is an underage boy that sells his body to rich German tourists. After being brutally raped and tortured, he gets rid of his pimp. Now, in charge of the underage prostitution underworld, he sends other boys to the hands of the most sadistic clients in Germany.

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2013, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify… sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

¡Feliz año nuevo! En este post especial tenemos los largometrajes de diciembre y la lista de lo mejor del 2013. Así que empecemos con "Captain Phillips" (2013), dirigida por Paul Greengrass; el protagonista es un capitán (Tom Hanks) a cargo de un buque mercante que es atacado por piratas somalíes. Greengrass no ignora la miseria humana y la pobreza extrema de Somalia, y hay imágenes fuertes en relación a ello, pero en última instancia su mayor triunfo es convertir a este capitán en un héroe muy humano (y humanitario). 

"Celeste & Jesse Forever" (2012) es una comedia sobre una pareja divorciada que todavía se comportan como si estuvieran casados. Para ser honesto, solamente la vi por Elijah Wood, pero su rol como el jefe gay no es especialmente memorable. 
  
Escrito y dirigido por Anna Boden y Ryan Fleck, "It’s Kind of a Funny Story" (2010) es un fascinante retrato de la adolescencia y la depresión. Keir Gilchrist, un estudiante de secundaria, está bajo observación en el ala psiquiátrica debido a sus tendencias suicidas. Allí conoce a Zach Galifianakis, un maniacodepresivo que le enseña la importancia de la vida, y Emma Roberts, la chica que lo hace descubrir el amor. Hay momentos divertidos, y también tristes… Es una mirada muy inspiradora sobre la depresión y el suicidio. La recomiendo.

Jared Leto es un atractivo joven que seduce a mujeres viejas y desesperadas para quitarles su dinero en "Lonely Hearts" (2006), hasta que un día conoce a Salma Hayek, una asesina psicópata y despiadada. Mientras matan a diestra y siniestra, los detectives John Travolta y James Gandolfini les siguen la pista. Es fascinante observar cómo Salma Hayek se vuelve más y más brutal, y cómo su compañero empieza a tener dudas.

Era fan de Jesse McCartney en “Summerland” (una serie de televisión), así que estaba ansioso por verlo en "Chernobyl Diaries" (2012). Jesse McCartney y un grupo de jóvenes visitan una ciudad rusa abandonada que fue contaminada por el accidente nuclear de Chernobyl. La atmósfera, las ruinas y la idea de criaturas transformadas por la radiación crean momentos que dan miedo. ¡Hay bastante suspenso y buenas secuencias de terror!

Otra emocionante película de terror es "The Collection" (2012), heredera de “Saw”  (trampas mortales, gore, tortura, etc.), me mantuvo en tensión desde el inicio. Emma Fitzpatrick, William Peltz y Daniel Sharman actúan sorprendentemente bien.

"Clay" (2008), de Andrew Gunn, es un magnífico film. Harry McEntire es un muchacho irlandés de 14 años que está lidiando con los cambios hormonales y el descubrimiento de su propia sexualidad. Un día, conoce a Ben-Ryan Davies, un chico muy apuesto con una  personalidad magnética. Pero este chiquillo parece tener una mente maligna, y el deseo de herir e incluso matar personas. Lo que empieza como simple terror psicológico se vuelve más y más retorcido cuando los dos jovencitos le otorgan vida a un golem hecho de arcilla. Los problemas empiezan, sin embargo, cuando el atractivo chico besa al protagonista y ambos, inmediatamente, son acusados de ser maricones. "Clay" es una verdadera joya oculta. Totalmente asombrosa.

Thure Lindhardt y Zachary Booth son una pareja gay en "Keep the Lights On" (2012). Aunque al principio tienen buen sexo y mucha diversión, la adicción de Zachary se sale de control. Vivir con un drogadicto es como estar atrapado en la peor pesadilla, y todo este dolor e intensidad es aptamente capturado por el cineasta Ira Sachs.

"Monster Pies" (2013) de Lee Galea es una de las mejores producciones australianas que he visto en años. Tristan Barr y Lucas Linehan son dos chiquillos de colegio que tienen una tarea sobre el amor imposible; al pasar tiempo juntos, algo más que amistad aflora entre ellos. Rápidamente los dos adolescentes se enamoran profundamente, pero no pueden enfrentarse a sus homofóbicos padres. Galea es un director genuinamente talentoso, capaz de expresar emociones crudas, intensificar la alegría de la juventud así que como la tristeza de la pérdida. El final me rompió el corazón.

"L’inconnu du lac" (2013) de Alain Guiraudie desafía los límites entro lo erótico y lo pornográfico. Pierre Deladonchamps es un joven que visita una playa nudista francesa en la que docenas de gays tienen encuentros sexuales anónimos (al igual que él), hasta que se enamora de un hombre que asesina a sus amantes homosexuales. El homicidio y la homosexualidad, la penetración anal, la eyaculación y el sexo no simulado son parte de la audaz propuesta de Guiraudie.

"Otra película de amor" (2011), de Edwin Oyarce, es un relato cautivador sobre dos adolescentes (Benjamín Prati y Aquiles Poblete) que hacen tonterías en sus vacaciones de verano; al principio simplemente pierden el tiempo; y lo que comienza como momentos extraños y confusos los lleva a los manoseos, la masturbación y más. Pero ¿puede eso ser suficiente para satisfacer a dos jovencitos cachondos? Este es uno de los mayores logros de la cinematografía chilena. 

Desde Dinamarca llega "Drengen der ikke kunne svømme" (2011), de Anders Helde, un conmovedor y emotivo acercamiento a la sexualidad adolescente y los vínculos masculinos. Sebastian Elkrog Sørensen nunca ha visto a su madre y Jonas Wandschneider lo ayuda a buscarla. Pronto, los dos chiquillos se dan cuenta de que el amor entre muchachos puede ser real.

"Eres mi héroe" (2003), de Antonio Cuadri, es el fruto de una mente sensible e imaginativa. Manuel Lozano es un muchachito de 13 años que intenta defenderse de los abusivos del colegio; ajustarse a una nueva ciudad y controlar sus impulsos sexuales puede ser muy difícil, y cuando se hace amigo del ya no tan abusivo Félix López finalmente las cosas empiezan a mejorar. Pero luego el generalísimo Franco muere, y repentinamente España está en un caos político. El protagonista y sus amigos viven en un estado de confusión hormonal, al igual que España. Manuel Lozano y Félix López son actores extraordinarios. El final es tan dramático que no pude dejar de llorar. Una obra maestra europea.  

Hugues Burin des Roziers aborda un tema controversial: la promiscuidad sexual en adolescentes. "Blue jeans Du beurre aux Allemands" (1977) es un relato sobre el ocaso de la niñez, centrado en un grupo de niños franceses que son llevados por su colegio a Inglaterra. Allí, Gilles Budin conoce a Michel Gibet, un chico ligeramente mayor que causa furor con sus inimitables blue jeans. Los dos chiquillos pasan tiempo juntos, y el menor siente una extraña fascinación por su amigo; Gilles usa los blue jeans de su amigo, pero eso no es suficiente. En poco tiempo la intimidad entre los dos muchachitos levanta sospechas entre los otros jóvenes. Y cuando Gilles es humillado por ser gay, los problemas empiezan.

"Swinki" (2009), de Robert Glinski, es una cruel crónica sobre la prostitución infantil en Polonia. Filip Garbacz es un chaval menor de edad que vende su cuerpo a los turistas alemanes adinerados. Después de ser brutalmente violado y torturado, se deshace de su proxeneta. Ahora, a cargo del bajo mundo de la prostitución de menores, envía a otros chicos a manos de los más sádicos clientes alemanes.

El tiempo no es sino un delgado velo, sobre él nuestras siluetas se abultan o aligeran. Otro año va y viene en este atormentado blog y ello indudablemente merece que sopesemos apropiadamente nuestras experiencias cinematográficas. Que sea así, por ende, y dejadnos girar el torno y la rueda. Hablad, oh lectores, y escuchad bien, puesto que aún nos resta suficiente ingenio para sorprenderos. Se ha propuesto que debíamos encontrar posiciones para todas las imágenes en movimiento presentadas en el transcurso del 2012, y con mente ágil y conocimientos tanto en materia de directores como de actores, confiamos en que vosotros incluiréis nuestro juicio entre los mejores. Aqueste es nuestro testimonio... suficiente en nuestro pensamiento íntimo que estas apreciaciones, desparramadas al alimón, sean de la más noble disposición.

2013 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

Although I love all artistic expressions, the ninth art always had a preponderant place in my life. I learned to read when I was around 4 thanks to my father’s comic collection; thousands of panels and captions and onomatopoeias have enriched my existence and now, in 2013, I must say –and very proudly– that I've broken a personal record this year. I managed to acquire and read over 645 comics.

Most comics are mildly entertaining and narratively acceptable and that’s it. Fortunately, there are always a few that go beyond the standard, expanding our imagination and igniting our curiosity. My purpose here is to highlight those works that have, indeed, inspired me. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the third annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

We can all remember the most intense moments in our lives. Instants of sheer happiness, excruciating pain, sadness, excitement, anger, etc. But can we make others experience those things that remain in our memories? I think only good writers are capable of doing that. Transmitting emotions so powerful that something inside of us is awakened. There are 3 excellent writers on my 2013 list: Kieron Gillen for his innovative and deeply touching “Young Avengers”, Mark Millar for his rather splendid “Kick-Ass vol. 3” and Matt Fraction for “FF”, “Hawkeye” and especially “Sex Criminals”.

I grew up surrounded by art, and that has helped me distinguish who are truly masters of pencil & inks. Of course, learning to draw –I’m a 100% autodidact– has proven very useful when I have to judge the artistic skills of others. 3 artists have exceled during the past 12 months and I think a reward it’s only fair: Jamie McKelvie for his original and stunningly beautiful “Young Avengers”, John Cassaday for his short but well regarded run on “Uncanny Avengers” and J. H. Williams III for his remarkable “Sandman Overture”.  

The sacred duty of a cover is simple: it has to be aesthetically superior to all other covers. The first thing we look at when holding a comic is the cover, and it has to be catchy, it has to be gorgeous. It isn’t easy to come across great covers on a monthly basis, but some artists have pleasantly surprised me with their output: Esad Ribic for his impressive “Thor God of Thunder” cover art, reminiscent of legendary masters like Frank Frazetta; Alex Ross for his spectacular illustrations for “Masks” and especially “Astro City”; and Martin Morazzo, a very promising newcomer that has delighted me with his “Great Pacific”.

Some fans don’t pay attention to editors, but they work 24/7 to provide us with the best possible comics. In this case the award goes to Brendan Wright (Dark Horse Comics) for putting together the superb deluxe edition of “The Best of Milligan and McCarthy”.  

After reading almost 700 comics it became really difficult to decide which one was the best. So I’ve considered only those published in 2013 (that, for instance, rules out “Judge Dredd Origins”, honestly the most brilliant comic I’ve read this year). So the 2013 Arion’s Achievement Award for Best Single Issue goes to “The Kiss and the Make-Up” from Young Avengers # 9; it was heartbreaking to see Teddy breaking up with Billy, but what I value the most is the way in which Gillen forgets about melodrama and still makes you feel moved by the situation.

It started in January (2013) and it ends in January (2014). Still, without a shadow of a doubt, it’s the best ongoing series of the year. I’m talking about “Young Avengers”, of course! Kieron Gillen’s magnum opus is a poignant and unforgettable tale about youth, identity and relationships; it’s also one of the best superhero titles I’ve read in a long time and it certainly has rejuvenated my faith in the superhero genre. 

There have been many wonderful miniseries (“Witch Doctor Mal Practice”, “Happy”, “Thanos Rising”, “Snapshot”, “The Wake” and “Dexter”) but the prize goes to “Kick-Ass 3”. Once again, I’ve been seduced by the world of Dave Lizewski and its unique combination of humor and wit.

When I started with my nominations for New Series I immediately realized how many amazing first issues I had read. I loved “Sidekick”, “Sex Criminals”, “Alex + Ada”, “FF”, “Jupiter’s Legacy”, “Astro City”, “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Thor God of Thunder”, but this award cannot be shared. So the one and only Best New Series is “Sandman Overture”, an example of imagination, a triumph of dreams.

“The Best of Milligan and McCarthy” deserves as many praises as possible. It certainly is the Best Archival Collection / Reprint I bought this year and also one of the most extraordinary hardcovers I have in my collection. Marvel and DC should learn from Dark Horse Comics how to do a truly deluxe hardcover edition!

Brendan McCarthy

Although for the past 3 years I’ve bought mostly books from Image, Avatar, IDW, Dynamite and other indy publishers, 2013 was the year of the Marvel resurrection. With the finest artistic teams in the industry, Marvel Now was a good relaunch (wisely respecting continuity… unlike DC’s messy proposal). So, against all odds, the best publisher of 2013 is Marvel Comics.

Reading news about the comic book industry has been a part of my daily routine for years. There are many interesting and informative websites out there, but only a few are as useful as ComicBookResources.com CBR has it all: from monthly solicitations, daily reviews and previews to the most entertaining columns.  

In 2013 we say goodbye to several prominent creators: Carmine Infantino and Nick Cardy were classic artists, and for many readers they will always be symbols of the Silver Age of Comics. Scott Clark had been drawing comics for Image and Wildstorm in the 90s. I saw his pages in recent issues of Batman Incorporated and it was clear that he was experimenting with new formats and digital techniques. Didier Comès was a very talented Belgian artist, and his extraordinary work will live on forever. But there is one particular loss that has saddened me deeply: José Ortiz. He was a brilliant artist from Spain who contributed to some of the most memorable titles I’ve read in my life (Cimoc, Zona 84, Creepy, Totem, etc.) and was the artist of some of my favorite comics, particularly Burton & Cyb and Hombre. I grew up reading all of this and I admired Ortiz greatly. He was definitely one of the best European authors and I wish I had talked about his work while he was still alive.

Every month I check and double-check my comics list… I always start with dozens of candidates and then the culling begins. Besides purchasing comics written by authors that I trust completely, I also try new titles that seem promising. But sometimes, in my desire to find novelties, I end up with some stinkers... Brian Wood’s Ultimate Comics X-Men is the worst title of the year; it’s uninteresting, unoriginal and unnecessarily boring. Although it isn’t as bad as The Bounce, one issue was enough to make me feel like I had wasted my time reading something worthless (certainly the worst first issue of the year). The Most Disappointing Project comes, again, from IDW. I’m talking about the disastrous reprints of Judge Dredd Classics; instead of respecting the original material, IDW has released a mutilated edition with omitted pages, effectively ruining one of 2000AD’s greatest stories (judge for yourselves here). A word of advice: try to find Eagle’s American edition from the 80s, and then you’ll be able to see why Judge Dredd is such a fascinating character and why The Apocalypse War is one of the greatest sagas ever. It’s hard to believe IDW messed up so badly.

Aunque adoro todas las manifestaciones artísticas, el noveno arte siempre tuvo un lugar preponderante en mi vida. Aprendí a leer cuando tenía 4 años gracias a la colección de cómics de mi padre; miles de viñetas y diálogos y onomatopeyas han enriquecido mi existencia y ahora, en el 2013, debo decir –y muy orgullosamente– que he podido romper un récord personal este año. Logré adquirir y leer más de 645 cómics.

La mayoría de los cómics son medianamente entretenidos y narrativamente aceptables y eso es todo. Afortunadamente, siempre hay algunos que van más allá del standard, que expanden nuestra imaginación y encienden nuestra curiosidad. Mi propósito aquí es resaltar esas obras que, de hecho, me han inspirado. Así que, sin más preámbulos, los invito a la tercera edición anual de los premios AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

Proyecto más decepcionante - Judge Dredd Classics

Todos podemos recordar los momentos más intensos de nuestras vidas. Instantes de felicidad total, terrible dolor, tristeza, emoción, ira, etc. Pero ¿podemos hacer que otros experimentan aquello que permanece en nuestros recuerdos? Creo que sólo los buenos escritores tienen esa capacidad. Transmitir emociones tan poderosas que algo en nuestro interior es despertado. Hay 3 excelentes escritores en mi lista del 2013: Kieron Gillen por su innovador y profundamente conmovedor “Young Avengers”, Mark Millar por su esplendido “Kick-Ass vol. 3” y Matt Fraction por “FF”, “Hawkeye” y especialmente “Sex Criminals”.

Crecí rodeado de arte, y eso me ha ayudado a distinguir a aquellos que son en verdad maestros del lápiz y la tinta. Desde luego, aprender a dibujar –soy 100% autodidacta– ha sido muy útil a la hora de juzgar las habilidades artísticas de otros. 3 artistas han dado lo mejor de sí en los últimos 12 meses y creo que es justa una recompensa: Jamie McKelvie por su original e impresionantemente hermoso “Young Avengers”, John Cassaday por su breve pero bien recibida etapa en “Uncanny Avengers” y J. H. Williams III por su insuperable “Sandman Overture”.  

El sagrado deber de una portada es simple: debe ser estéticamente superior a todas las otras portadas. Lo primero que vemos al sujetar un cómic es la portada, y debe ser atractiva, debe ser preciosa. No es fácil encontrar grandes portadas mes a mes, pero algunos artistas me han sorprendido favorablemente: Esad Ribic por su impresionante arte en “Thor God of Thunder”, reminiscente de maestros legendarios como Frank Frazetta; Alex Ross por sus espectaculares ilustraciones en “Masks” y  especialmente en “Astro City”; y Martin Morazzo, alguien nuevo y muy prometedor que me ha agradado con su “Great Pacific”.

Algunos no les prestan atención a los editores, pero ellos trabajan las 24 horas del día para darnos los mejores cómics posibles. En este caso el premio va para Brendan Wright (Dark Horse Comics) por editar la soberbia edición de lujo de “The Best of Milligan and McCarthy”.  

Después de leer casi 700 cómics fue realmente difícil decidir cuál era el mejor. Así que solamente he considerado aquellos publicados en el 2013 (de este modo, queda eliminado “Judge Dredd Origins”, honestamente el cómic más brillante que he leído en el año). Así que el Arion’s Achievement Award del 2013 al mejor número único va para “El beso y la reconciliación” en Young Avengers # 9; fue muy triste ver a Teddy rompiendo con Billy, pero lo que más valoro es la forma en la que Gillen se olvida del melodrama y aun así nos hace sentir conmovidos por la situación.

Empezó en enero (2013) y termina en enero (2014). Aun así, sin la menor duda, es la mejor serie mensual del año. ¡Estoy hablando de “Young Avengers”, por supuesto! El magnum opus de Kieron Gillen es un relato imprescindible e inolvidable sobre la juventud, la identidad y las relaciones; también es uno de los mejores títulos de superhéroes que he leído en mucho tiempo y ciertamente ha rejuvenecido mi fe en el género de superhéroes.

Así que la única mejor nueva serie es “Sandman Overture”, un ejemplo de imaginación, un triunfo de los sueños.

“The Best of Milligan and McCarthy” merece todos los elogios posibles. Ciertamente es la mejor obra coleccionada / reimpresión que compré en el año y también uno de los tomos en tapa dura más extraordinarios que tengo en mi colección. ¡Marvel y DC deberían aprender de Dark Horse Comics cómo hacer una verdadera edición de lujo!

Leer noticias sobre la industria del cómic ha sido parte de mi rutina diaria por años. Hay tantas páginas interesantes e informativas, pero sólo unas pocas son tan útiles como ComicBookResources.com CBR lo tiene todo: desde solicitaciones mensuales, reseñas diarias hasta las columnas más entretenidas.  

En el 2013 decimos adiós a varios creadores prominentes: Carmine Infantino y Nick Cardy eran artistas clásicos, y para muchos lectores siempre serán símbolos de la Edad de Plata de los cómics. Scott Clark, por otro lado, era un artista algo más joven que había estado dibujando cómics para Image y Wildstorm en los 90s. Vi sus páginas en números recientes de "Batman Incorporated" y resulta claro que estaba experimentando con nuevos formatos y técnicas digitales. Didier Comès fue un artista belga muy talentoso, y su extraordinaria obra perdurará por siempre. Pero hay una pérdida en particular que me ha entristecido profundamente: José Ortiz. Él fue un brillante artista español que contribuyó a algunos de los más memorables títulos que he leído en mi vida (Cimoc, Zona 84, Creepy, Totem, etc.) y fue el artista de algunos de mis cómics favoritos, particularmente “Burton & Cyb” y “Hombre”. Crecí leyéndolos y admirando a Ortiz al máximo. Él fue definitivamente uno de los mejores autores europeos y desearía haber hablado sobre su obra mientras aún seguía con vida.

Cada mes reviso una y otra vez mi lista de cómics... siempre empiezo con una docena de candidatos y luego la criba comienza. Además de adquirir cómics escritos por autores en los que confío plenamente, también pruebo títulos nuevos que parecen prometedores. Pero a veces, en mi deseo de encontrar novedades, termino con algunos bodrios... Ultimate Comics X-Men de Brian Wood es el peor título del año; predecible e innecesariamente aburrido. Aunque no es tan malo como "The Bounce", un número fue suficiente para hacerme sentir que había perdido el tiempo leyendo algo sin valor (ciertamente el peor primer número del año). El proyecto más decepcionante es, una vez más, de IDW. Estoy hablando de las desastrosas reimpresiones de "Judge Dredd Classics"; en vez de respetar el material original, IDW ha armado una edición mutilada, con páginas omitidas, arruinando una de las más grandes historias de 2000AD (juzguen ustedes mismos aquí). Un consejo: intenten encontrar la edición estadounidense de Eagle de los 80, y entonces serán capaces de ver por qué Judge Dredd es un personaje tan fascinante y por qué "La guerra del apocalipsis" es una de las sagas más grandiosas. Es difícil creer que IDW metiera la pata de tan mala manera. 

Por Odín, he de cruzar multitud de ciudades para hallar esta audiencia. Y el alba se iluminaría prestamente si acaso dejase mi muesca en este diario en línea. Lo mejor del arte en Lima - 2013

2013 wasn’t precisely a good year for me, sure, during the first months there were many promising things going on and then, like in a drought, it all vanished. 

Luckily, I can gladly say that I had the chance to contribute with my comics and have them published at least on 3 occasions: Sci-Fi/Horror (OGN), Erotica (one-shot), and Ghost Stories. 


I also wish that I had completed Un-American Chronicles, my own comic, before the end of the year, but turns out you will have to wait a couple of months before reading it. I’m very impatient to finally hold it in my hands, it will be the first comic I’ve done that has my name on the cover. Isn’t that just fantastic?


Anyway, I’m sure 2014 will be a much a better year. At least, you’ll get to read my stories in the "You Are Not Alone" trade paperback, in "Cities" and probably in some other title.


As you all know, besides comic books I also talk about art here. Contemporary art.  Peruvian contemporary art. You may not be familiar with the following names but, I promise you, they are really good.

In my next post you’ll find out which were the finest authors and best comic books of 2013. Yes, it’s the third edition of the famous and prestigious AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards). It usually takes me a long time to complete this list, and this year it has been particularly difficult because there were a lot more comics than last year. 

Once the AAA is done, I can categorically affirm that the year is officially over.

Tomás Prochazka Núñez

El año empezó lleno de ilusiones y buenos augurios, pero luego de una rápida evaluación puedo constatar que mucho de lo que planifiqué simplemente quedó en el aire. No obstante, me enorgullece haber  publicado cómics en tres ocasiones (ya sea como escritor o dibujante) durante el 2013: Sci Fi/Horror (novela gráfica), Erotica (one-shot), y Ghost Stories.

El 2014 empieza más que nada con incertidumbre. Sobre todo luego de decirle adiós al Grupo Editorial COSAS. Trabajar en la revistas COSAS sin duda ha sido una experiencia sumamente enriquecedora; realmente llegué a encariñarme con la gente de la oficina y, de hecho, me alegra mucho seguir encontrándome con ellos en inauguraciones, cocteles y eventos similares. 

No obstante, al margen de aquello que funcionó o dejó de funcionar, este año mi pasión por el arte me llevó a innumerables muestras y creo que es justo, y hasta necesario, establecer en líneas generales un balance de lo mejor del arte en Lima.

En el 2011 vi por primera vez la extraordinaria obra de Hugo Salazar y quedé deslumbrado. En esta ocasión el ICPNA de Miraflores presentó “ExcluidoS al azar”, muestra que confirma el enorme talento de Hugo Salazar, sin lugar a dudas, el mejor artista del 2013.

El premio a la mejor muestra individual va para “Un día en la vida” (Galería Enlace), de Renzo Núñez Melgar Vega, más conocido como REVE. Durante un año visité a REVE en su taller barranquino y documenté fotográficamente su proceso creativo; y luego de tanto tiempo me encantó ver los impresionantes cuadros, ya terminados, en la sala de la galería.

Asistí a muchas colectivas pero la más impresionante fue la 74º exposición anual de la facultad de arte de la PUCP. Debo resaltar los trabajos de Aldo Romero Scattolon, Alejandra Gálvez, Mayra Chipana y Renzo Bazán Marroquín.

El año pasado comenté lo mucho que me había fascinado la obra de Tomás Prochazka Núñez. En ese momento afirmé que el joven artista nos sorprendería gratamente en el futuro, y por suerte, no tuvimos que esperar mucho para que así fuese. En el 2013, Tomás compartió con nosotros sus más originales y alucinantes pinturas en espacios como el Bisetti de Barranco y su propia alma máter, Corriente Alterna. 

Iosu Aramburu plantea una propuesta interesante y profunda en “Todo lo sólido” (Galería 80M2). Es importante reconocer que una obra adquiere mayor validez siempre y cuando se fundamente en una propuesta óptima. Duchamp lo sabía, y cada vez más los artistas de nuestro medio entienden que es necesario acompañar la acción de pintar con la de pensar.

Poder visitar una retrospectiva de Picasso es, sin duda, un auténtico lujo. “El eterno femenino” presenta 67 obras del inmortal artista español. La muestra abarca diversas décadas de su producción (años 30, 40, 50 y 60) así como diversos estilos e influencias (clasicismo, renacimiento, cubismo, etc.) y variadas técnicas y soportes (litografía, aguada, gouache, etc.). Visité el CCPUCP en un buen momento, y de hecho tuve la sala de exposiciones para mí solo así que pude pasearme con calma y admirar cada una de las obras en exhibición. Realmente ha sido una maravilla, no solamente es la muestra más imprescindible del año sino también una de las más importantes que ha habido en Lima en la última década. “El eterno femenino” permanecerá en nuestro país hasta el 26 de enero. 

“Somos Libres” es un lúcido testimonio de Mario Testino sobre el arte contemporáneo. MATE (Asociación Mario Testino) ha convocado a importantísimos artistas europeos y el resultado es una muestra imperdible que estará abierta al público limeño hasta el 6 de abril del 2014. En esta colectiva participan Henry Bourne, Thomas Ruff, Miguel Andrade Valdez, Dan Colen, Keith Haring, Sarah Lucas, Douglas Gordon, Steven Shearer, Anselm Reyle, Thomas Houseago, George Condo, Lucy Birkhead, Rachel Feinstein (mi favorita) y Waled Beshty, entre otros.

November Comic Books / cómics de noviembre

It’s time to say Merry Christmas. There’s an old saying that goes “the more the merrier”, and that applies perfectly to comics! I read two wonderful Young Avengers issues, and I was nicely surprised by Jason Aaron’s high level of quality (Wolverine & X-Men, Thor God of Thunder and Thanos Rising have been very good). Velvet # 1 was such an extraordinary comic (and it had some of the most beautiful Epting pages I've ever seen). This month we say goodbye to Unwritten, Vertigo's finest ongoing series (there will be one final miniseries next year, though). And I loved Guardians of the Galaxy. Kick-Ass was amazing but if I had to choose my two favorite books of the month they would be Sandman Overture and Alex + Ada (both first issues). And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

AGE OF ULTRON #2 (OF 10)

Es hora de decir feliz navidad. Y además de buena compañía también he tenido muchos buenos cómics. Leí dos maravillosos números de “Young Avengers” y Jason Aaron me sorprendió favorablemente con un alto nivel de calidad (“Wolverine & X-Men”, “Thor God of Thunder” y “Thanos Rising” han sido muy buenos). Velvet # 1 fue un cómic extraordinario (con las más hermosas páginas de Epting que he visto). Este mes decimos adiós a Unwritten, la mejor serie continua de Vertigo (aunque habrá una miniserie final el próximo año). Y me encantó Guardians of the Galaxy. Kick-Ass fue asombroso pero si tuviera que elegir mis dos títulos favoritos del mes serían “Sandman Overture” y “Alex + Ada” (ambos primeros números). Y ahora sin más preámbulos, aquí van los cómics de noviembre.
