My favorite comics of the month were Astro City #48 and American Gods #8. And now, without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations:

AMERICAN GODS: SHADOWS #8

Thor: Godstorm - Kurt Busiek & Steve Rude

For many Thor is only the god of thunder and lightening, but for those who have a special interest in Norse mythology, Thor is also the god of storms, the embodiment of strength and the protector of humankind, a role that was highlighted by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby when they decided to turn the mythical god into one of the most powerful heroes of the Marvel Universe.

In “Godstorm” (originally published in 3 chapters, from November to December 2001, and January 2002), Kurt Busiek wonders what would happen if the storms simply decided to disobey Thor’s divine commands, and what would this entail for Thor over the span of several centuries. “I was looking to do something that would deal with Thor as god, Thor as myth, within the context of Thor as Marvel character [...] I was a nut for Norse mythology long before I was a comics reader, and I wanted to get some of that feel into things”, affirms Busiek.

Steve Rude was chosen as the artist for this project because he was able to channel the artistic sensibility of the 60s, the dynamic strength of Kirby while, at the same time, combining all the elements in Thor’s early narrative into a single, cohesive whole. We have a unique duality in Thor: he is a god and he is a man, he is loyal to Asgard or Midgard depending on the situation. Thor is an independent hero but he’s also a part of a family of gods, there is an unending rivalry with Loki and we also have the romantic aspect from the early 60s run (the relationship between Thor’s alter ego, Dr. Donald Blake and nurse Jane Foster) as envisioned by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. 

In addition to paying homage to the Lee-Kirby era, it is not surprising that this story has a combination of ancient and modern elements. The Avengers show up but there is also a history background, a world of swords and the presence of Vikings, centuries ago. Today or yesterday, it doesn't really matter, what matters the most is that the divine intervention of Thor in the affairs of mortal men usually changes the course of history. 

In this context we can see how much and how often the God of Thunder has to balance his loyalty towards either Asgard or Midgard. Is he a man or a god? Is he more worried about an earthly apocalypse than an Asgardian Ragnarok? What is Thor in the end? I think Kurt Busiek tried to answer this question in Godstorm and that's why the story begins with two children who share an uncanny resemblance with Thor and his brother Loki, they both hear this story about a storm capable of defying his master. 

These two children represent Thor and Loki in their attitudes, in their behaviors and in the way they see the world: one of them seems to be brave, strong and respectful of traditions, while the other one prefers to spend his time playing, talking his way out of his duties and ultimately going against the usual way of life in this Viking village. The difference between the two brothers is evident; perhaps all brothers are different and so they should be in order to define themselves. That is one of the elements that also prevails in Thor’s early comics. Because Thor and Loki are always family. They are brothers and they can be completely different from each other at times, but they also share some common traits: perseverance whether in good or bad, endurance, cunning, intelligence, it doesn't matter if it is to solve problems or to create them. “I am no stranger to family discord”, affirms Thor. Indeed, these two brothers are part of an indelible equation, which can be mirrored in the dynamics of any other (mortal or immortal) family.

Thor's youthful days / los días juveniles de Thor

With care and inspiration, Busiek imbues in “Godstorm” his passion for mythology but also for comics. Throughout the centuries we see how Thor evolves, we see how he becomes Donald Blake and at some point even Eric Masterson. Steve Rude’s art is the perfect complement for Busiek’s script. And I must compliment him especially for his wonderfully painted covers, each one of them beautiful in its own way, the first one is harmonic and peaceful, almost idyllic, while the other two are ambitious and epic in their scope. I certainly recommend this miniseries to all Marvel Comics readers.

Odin, Thor & Loki

En "Godstorm" (originalmente publicado en 3 capítulos, de noviembre a diciembre del 2001 y enero del 2002), Kurt Busiek se pregunta qué pasaría si las tormentas simplemente decidieran desobedecer las órdenes divinas de Thor, y qué implicaría esto para Thor durante el lapso de varios siglos. "Estaba buscando hacer algo que tratara a Thor como dios, a Thor como mito, en el contexto de Thor como personaje de Marvel [...] era un apasionado de la mitología nórdica mucho antes de ser lector de cómics, y quería recuperar ese sentido mítico", afirma Busiek.

Steve Rude fue elegido como el artista para este proyecto porque fue capaz de canalizar la sensibilidad artística de los 60s, el dinamismo de Kirby y, al mismo tiempo, combinar todos los elementos de la primera etapa de Thor en un todo único y cohesivo. Tenemos una dualidad única en Thor: él es un dios y es un hombre, es leal a Asgard o Midgard dependiendo de la situación. Thor es un héroe independiente, pero también forma parte de una familia de dioses, existe una rivalidad sin fin con Loki y también tenemos el aspecto romántico de principios de los 60s (la relación entre el alter ego de Thor, el Dr. Donald Blake y la enfermera Jane Foster) tal como fuera narrado por Stan Lee y Jack Kirby.

Además de rendir homenaje a la era Lee-Kirby, no es sorprendente que esta historia tenga una combinación de elementos antiguos y modernos. Los Avengers aparecen pero también hay antecedentes históricos, un mundo de espadas y la presencia de los vikingos, hace siglos. Hoy o ayer, en realidad no importa, lo que cuenta es que la intervención divina de Thor en los asuntos de los mortales generalmente cambia el curso de la historia.

Avengers Assemble!

En este contexto, podemos ver cuánto y con qué frecuencia el Dios del Trueno debe equilibrar su lealtad hacia Asgard o Midgard. ¿Es un hombre o un dios? ¿Está más preocupado por un apocalipsis terrenal que un Ragnarok asgardiano? ¿Qué es Thor al final? Creo que Kurt Busiek intentó responder esta pregunta en Godstorm y es por eso que la historia comienza con dos niños que comparten un extraño parecido con Thor y su hermano Loki, ambos escuchan esta historia sobre una tormenta capaz de desafiar a su amo.

Estos dos niños representan a Thor y Loki en sus actitudes, en sus comportamientos y en su forma de ver el mundo: uno de ellos parece ser valiente, fuerte y respetuoso de las tradiciones, mientras que el otro prefiere pasar su tiempo jugando, escapando de sus obligaciones y, en última instancia, yendo en contra de la forma de vida habitual en esta aldea vikinga. La diferencia entre los dos hermanos es evidente; quizás todos los hermanos son diferentes y deben serlo para definirse a sí mismos. Ese es uno de los elementos que también prevalece en los primeros comics de Thor. Porque Thor y Loki son siempre familiares. Son hermanos y a veces pueden ser completamente diferentes el uno del otro, pero también comparten algunos rasgos comunes: perseverancia, ya sea para el bien o para el mal, resistencia, astucia, inteligencia, no importa si es para resolver problemas o para crearlos. Con cuidado e inspiración, Busiek imbuye en "Godstorm" su pasión por la mitología pero también por los cómics. A lo largo de los siglos, vemos cómo evoluciona Thor, vemos cómo se convierte en Donald Blake y, en algún momento, incluso en Eric Masterson. El arte de Steve Rude es el complemento perfecto para el guión de Busiek. Y debo felicitarlo especialmente por sus portadas maravillosamente pintadas, cada una de ellas hermosa a su manera, la primera es armónica y pacífica, casi idílica, mientras que las otras dos son ambiciosas y épicas en su enfoque. Ciertamente, recomiendo esta miniserie a todos los lectores de Marvel.

October films / películas de octubre

This month I only had time for one independent production, which is not the kind of movie I typically watch: Signature Move (2017), directed by Jennifer Reeder. This is a romantic comedy about 2 lesbians Fawzia Mirza (a Pakistani woman who feels forced to uphold family values and traditions, therefore remaining in the closet) and Sari Sanchez (a Mexican woman who embraces her lesbianism but has bad luck with love). I particularly enjoyed the way Reeder portrayed the particular idiosyncrasies of 2 cultures that are, in many ways, deeply conservative, and the friction this causes when they’re transplanted into to different society (in this case, the US). By the way, the protagonist of Signature Move was actually presenting the movie in the opening night of the Milwaukee LGBT Film Festival.

Este mes sólo tuve tiempo para una producción independiente, que no es el tipo de película que suelo ver: Signature Move (2017), dirigida por Jennifer Reeder. Es una comedia romántica sobre 2 lesbianas Fawzia Mirza (una mujer pakistaní que se siente obligada a mantener los valores familiares y la tradición, y que por lo tanto no asume su sexualidad) y Sari Sánchez (una mujer mexicana que acepta su lesbianismo pero que tiene mala suerte en el amor). Disfruté especialmente la forma en que Reeder describe las idiosincrasias particulares de 2 culturas que, en muchos sentidos, son profundamente conservadoras, y la fricción que esto causa cuando son trasplantadas a una sociedad diferente (en este caso, Estados Unidos). Por cierto, la protagonista de Signature Move estuvo presentando la película en la inauguración del Milwaukee LGBT Film Festival.

Planetary # 20 - Warren Ellis & John Cassaday

When Stan Lee created the Marvel Universe, many of his characters were born out of an accident involving cosmic rays, gamma bombs, radioactive spiders, etc. For instance, the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s premiere superhero family, gained superpowers after a space expedition in which they received a full blast of cosmic rays. While Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm y Johnny Storm decided to use their powers and resources to help mankind, in Planetary, the Four use those same abilities to oppress people and control the world. 

Randall Dowling (the equivalent of Mr. Fantastic), Kim Süskind (the equivalent of the Invisible Woman), William Leather (the equivalent of the Human Torch) and Jacob Greene (the equivalent of the Thing) have been Elijah Snow’s main antagonists for years. And they won’t allow that the alien structure from “Mystery in Space” falls in the hands of the Archaeologists of the Impossible. Therefore they send their most powerful member, Jacob Greene, to destroy Snow’s angels and take possession of this extraterrestrial vessel.

In “Rendezvous” (published in Planetary # 20, September 2004), Jacob Greene starts his violent expedition, annihilating all humanoids that get in his way. Although the Archaeologists of the Impossible would like to have more time to see more of the alien ecosystem, they also understand that Greene must be stopped at all costs. Just like he did in the previous issue, John Cassaday unleashes his imagination, turning every page into a fascinating landscape populated by the strangest creatures, such as the anthropoid fireflies that fly around gigantic nests.

Cassaday successfully creates a suspenseful atmosphere, generating more and more intrigue with every page, as the angels hunt down Jacob Greene. We see humanoids running away from the strongest member of the Four, and we only get to see glimpses of his body here and there, a hand, or feet. With his unlimited strength, this stony creature pulverizes the bone and flesh of every living creature around him.  

Snow's Angels / los ángeles de Snow

Nobody has seen Jacob Greene and survived to tell the tale, and yet, there are rumors about him. Unlike the other members of the Four, Greene is a monstrous anomaly. Perhaps that would be a more logical result if a human being is in touch with cosmic radiation. And the idea of mutations that affect and kill people had already been explored by Warren Ellis in “Ruins”, a fascinating dystopian satire in which all of the characters in the Marvel Universe suffer horrible mutations that ultimately lead them to a gruesome death. In “Ruins”, the gamma bomb turns Bruce Banner into a putrefied monster that has nothing to do with the Hulk, the X-Men are disfigured and mutilated creatures, and the Fantastic Four suffer horrible deaths: Johnny Storm burns from the bones outwards, Reed Richards bones protrude and rip apart his skin, and so on. 

Humanoids in danger! / humanoides en peligro

Following the same logic, Jacob Greene is not the charming hero made of orange rocks that we’ve seen in Fantastic Four. He is a terrifying monster with tumors all over his body. In a shocking splash page, Cassaday reveals how the creature looks, in just one image, the artists conveys all the rage and violence of a character that, for all intents and purposes, should resemble one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes. 

Almost a decade after writing “Ruins”, Ellis plays again with the idea of paying the ultimate price for having superpowers. In this case, Jacob Greene is a monster that can barely speak like a human being, but Elijah Snow has given his angels enough information to get rid of him forever.

Jacob Greene

Nadie ha visto a Jacob Greene y ha sobrevivido para contarlo, y sin embargo, hay rumores sobre él. A diferencia de los otros miembros de los Cuatro, Greene es una anomalía monstruosa. Tal vez ese sería un resultado más lógico si un ser humano está en contacto con la radiación cósmica. In September I had the chance to reconnect with the filmography of François Ozon, one of the most innovative and audacious contemporary French directors. Before producing such masterpieces as Dans la maison, he was already making very interesting short films.

X2000 (1998), for example, shows Ozon’s ability to create an ominous atmosphere. Bruno Slagmulder wakes up after a new year’s a party and wanders around a dilapidated loft, when he finds two teenagers sleeping together (Lionel Le Guevellou and Olivier Le Guevellou) he stares at them silently. Silence and abandonment are the leitmotifs of this strange story. 

In Une robe d'été (1996), Ozon subverts his own cinematographic universe (plagued by sexual ambiguity, explicit homosexuality and subtle violence). Sébastien Charles and Frédéric Mangenot, are two gay teenagers, enjoying the summer, but for some reason Sébastien seems unwilling to have sex with Frédéric. A fortuitous encounter with Lucia Sanchez will prove how sexuality sometimes can be more fluid and complex than one could think of. In this case, a heterosexual contact will increase Sébastien’s capacity for eroticism and exploration, and will reignite his passion towards his boyfriend.

En septiembre tuve la oportunidad de reconectarme con la filmografía de François Ozon, uno de los directores franceses contemporáneos más innovadores y audaces. Antes de producir obras maestras como Dans la maison, ya estaba haciendo cortometrajes muy interesantes.

X2000 (1998), por ejemplo, muestra la capacidad de Ozon para crear una atmósfera ominosa. Bruno Slagmulder se despierta después de una fiesta de año nuevo y deambula por un loft algo dilapidado, hasta encontrar a dos adolescentes que duermen juntos (Lionel Le Guevellou y Olivier Le Guevellou), él los observa fijamente, silenciosamente. El silencio y el abandono son los leitmotifs de esta extraña historia.

En Une robe d'été (1996), Ozon subvierte su propio universo cinematográfico (plagado de ambigüedad sexual, homosexualidad explícita y violencia sutil). Sébastien Charles y Frédéric Mangenot, son dos adolescentes gays, disfrutando del verano, pero por alguna razón Sébastien no parece dispuesto a tener sexo con Frédéric. Un encuentro fortuito con Lucia Sánchez demostrará cómo la sexualidad a veces puede ser más fluida y compleja de lo que se podría pensar. En este caso, un contacto heterosexual aumentará la capacidad de Sébastien para el erotismo y la exploración, y volverá a encender su pasión hacia su novio.

August Comics / Cómics de agosto

In August I received many great comics, such as Sacred Creatures, The Shaolin Cowboy and Astonishing X-Men. I was also very excited to get my hands on The Legion of Super-Heroes Silver Age Omnibus HC, I’m reading only a few pages per week, so it’ll last me for a while. I also enjoyed Marvel's reprints of classic Kirby stories. Busiek’s Astro City was impressive, but if only by a slight margin, I’d say the best comic of the month was Silver Surfer # 13. And now, without further ado, here are August comics as per solicitations:

Fue emocionante sujetar en mis manos el The Legion of Super-Heroes Silver Age Omnibus HC, estoy leyendo sólo algunas páginas por semana, así que me durará bastante. También disfruté las reediciones de Marvel de historias clásicas de Kirby. Astro City de Busiek fue impresionante, pero aunque sea por escaso margen, diría que el mejor cómic del mes fue Silver Surfer # 13. Y ahora, sin mayores preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de agosto:

Mythos X-Men - Paul Jenkins & Paolo Rivera

More than half a century ago, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the world’s most famous mutants: the X-Men. The first issues were the kind of fun, fast-paced adventure most readers would come to expect from this legendary creative team. Stan Lee has explained in a few interviews that the reason why the X-Men were mutants in the first place did not necessarily have a dramatic intent. Tired of coming up with pseudo-scientific explanations (a radioactive spider, a gamma bomb, cosmic rays, secret chemical formulas, etc.), Stan Lee decided that if the X-Men were all mutants, then he wouldn’t have to come up with explanations for their powers, after all, they had been born that way, and each one of them possessed an X-tra ability that turned them into X-Men.

However, a couple of years later this new Marvel title started to evolve, or rather to mutate in ways that perhaps Lee and Kirby hadn’t envisioned in 1963. If at the beginning being a mutant was a simply a way of explaining why certain individuals had superpowers, by 1965 being a mutant triggered a wide array of dramatic possibilities: intolerance, prejudice, bigotry, and so on. When Lee and Kirby completed the Sentinels saga, they set the foundations of the future tone of the series: instead of inconsequential and swashbuckling adventures, the X-Men would become a complex metaphor for discrimination and oppressed minorities.

In “Mythos: X-Men” (originally published in Mythos # 1, March 2006), British writer Paul Jenkins reinterprets the classic first issue of the X-Men, this time giving special attention to the discrimination between homo sapiens (regular people) and homo superior (mutants). The opening sequence this time revolves around Magneto, who is about to execute “three red-blooded American youths” who have committed a hate crime. They have murdered a 12-year-old mutant. And that is something that the Master of Magnetism cannot forgive. In an intense soliloquy, Magneto explains that hate crimes continue to be prevalent in the US: in the 50s, white supremacists would murder black men, in subsequent decades the victims would be gays. 

One of my favorite moments takes place in the conversation between Professor X and Magneto. They both want to ensure the wellbeing of the mutant population, but they have such different approaches that they have become enemies. The conversation between Charles Xavier and the Master of Magnetism is an accurate portrayal of what makes these characters so essential to the Marvel Universe, and Jenkins excels at pointing out the political and philosophical differences of these two leaders.

“Mythos” was fully painted by Paolo Rivera in a style that effortlessly mixes realism with expressionism. In the panel in which we see the X-Men for the first time we can clearly see that each face has been inspired by a model from real life, and yet the image retains a special quality, a certain creative freedom and magic that turn this into an artistic achievement that is never restricted by strict realism or pure expressionism. Every page illustrated by Rivera is delightful, and one cannot help but to spend more than a few minutes admiring his elegant brush strokes and his vivid and rich color palette.

Sin embargo, un par de años más tarde este nuevo título de Marvel comenzó a evolucionar, o más bien a mutar en maneras que quizás Lee y Kirby no habían imaginado en 1963. Si al principio ser un mutante era simplemente una manera de explicar por qué ciertos individuos tenían superpoderes, para 1965 ser un mutante desencadenó una amplia gama de posibilidades dramáticas: la intolerancia, el prejuicio, el fanatismo, y así sucesivamente. Cuando Lee y Kirby completaron la saga de los Centinelas, sentaron las bases del futuro tono de la serie: en lugar de inconsecuentes y muy animadas aventuras, los X-Men se convertirían en una compleja metáfora de discriminación y minorías oprimidas.

X-Men versus Magneto

Uno de mis momentos favoritos es la conversación entre el Profesor X y Magneto. Ambos quieren asegurar el bienestar de la población mutante, pero tienen enfoques tan diferentes que se han convertido en enemigos. La conversación entre Charles Xavier y el Maestro del Magnetismo es una representación exacta de aquello que hace que estos personajes sean tan esenciales para el Universo Marvel, y Jenkins se luce al señalar las diferencias políticas y filosóficas de estos dos líderes.

"Mythos" fue pintado enteramente por Paolo Rivera en un estilo que mezcla con fluidez el realismo y el expresionismo. En la viñeta que muestra a los X-Men por primera vez, podemos ver claramente que cada rostro ha sido inspirado por un modelo de la vida real, y sin embargo la imagen conserva una cualidad especial, una cierta libertad creativa y mágica que convierten a esta página en un logro artístico que nunca está restringido por el realismo estricto o el expresionismo puro. Cada página ilustrada por Rivera es deliciosa, y uno no puede evitar admirar por varios minutos sus elegantes pinceladas y su vívida y rica paleta de colores.
